CRUISING , FLASHPACKING

Cinematic voyages: 20 unforgettable cruise ship movies.

Are you looking for inspiration to plan your first cruise ? Take a cinematic voyage with my pick of movies set on a cruise ship.

Not all of these cruise ship movies are masterpieces (although some are). A few are utter stinkers. However, each of them showcases aspects of life on the high seas.

Although I have indicated the availability of these films on Netflix and Amazon Prime there may be regional variations. Information here relates to the UK market in March 2024.

Classic Movies About Cruise Ships

Let’s start with the best movies about cruise ships, from films from Hollywood’s Golden Age to a science fiction classic.

Now, Voyager (1942)

Now, Voyager is not only one of the best movies set on a cruise ship but it is also one of my favourite films of all time. I blub like a baby each time I watch it.

Cowed by her domineering mother, middle-aged neurotic Boston heiress Charlotte Vale (a stupendous Bette Davis) takes a cruise after a restorative stay in a sanatorium. Whilst on board, she falls in love with the married Jerry (Paul Henreid).

The movie is famous for an iconic scene where Paul Henreid’s character lights two cigarettes and gives one to Bette Davis.

A masterpiece of a movie.

An Affair to Remember (1957)

This melodrama directed by Leo McCarey and starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is considered to be one of the most romantic films of all time.

Playboy Nickie (Grant) and Terry (Kerr) fall in love on a transatlantic cruise to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, they agree to meet in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. But will all go to plan?

An Affair to Remember was introduced to a new generation of cinema-goers when it was featured in the 1993 movie Sleepless in Seattle .

  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 87%

Death on the Nile (1978)

Agatha Christie’s 1937 murder mystery has been adapted for the silver screen three times but the original film version is the best of the bunch (don’t go near Kenneth Branagh’s woeful 2022 remake).

Directed by John Guillermin, Death on the Nile was Peter Ustinov’s first appearance as Hercule Poirot and perhaps his best. Soon after Poirot boards a ship for a luxurious cruise down the Nile, a newlywed heiress is discovered murdered on board. Who is her murderer?

  • Running time: 2 hours 20 minutes

The Fifth Element (1997)

Welcome to a cruise ship of the future.

For my money, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element is up there with the best science fiction movies of all time. Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis giving one of his finest performances) is a 23rd-century cab driver who is unwittingly pulled into a search for a mysterious fifth element that will prevent an apocalyptic event.

Much of the action in the final third of the movie takes place on Fhloston Paradise, a space cruise ship patronised by the rich and powerful. This superliner features twelve swimming pools with two VIP pools, dozens of high-end restaurants and a concert hall.

A glimpse of the future of cruising? Minus the giant fireball of course.

Disaster Movies Set on a Cruise Ship

The poseidon adventure (1972).

The 1970s was the decade for disaster movies featuring all-star ensemble casts and The Poseidon Adventure gets my vote as the best disaster film set on a cruise ship.

This multi-nominated movie – it went on to win two Oscars – centres on the ageing SS Poseidon on her final voyage from New York to Athens. After it is upended by a tsunami on New Year’s Day, it’s a race against time to bring the survivors to safety.

Spoiler alert; not many passengers make it.

  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 81%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 76%

Titanic (1997)

The Oscar-winning, multi-nominated Titanic is one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Directed by James Cameron and starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, this epic movie about one of the most famous cruise ships in history is also one of the most expensive movies ever made.

The sinking of the Titanic is viewed through the lens of a fictional relationship across the social divide between Rose (Winslet), and Jack (DiCaprio).

  • Running time: 3 hours 15 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 87%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 69%

A Night to Remember (1958)

Despite Titanic ’s many gongs, I far prefer this treatment of the sinking of the ill-fated cruise ship.

Filmed in a semi-documentary style, A Night to Remember sticks closely to the facts of the ship’s sinking, unimpeded by fictional sub-plots. This riveting film portrays the events of the fateful night of 15 th April 1912 from the perspective of the luxury liner’s second officer, Charles Lightoller (Kenneth More).

Movies to Make You Laugh

Monkey business (1931).

lobby card of monkey business one of the best cruise ship movies showing 3 of the marx brotheres

Monkey Business was the Marx Brothers’ third feature comedy and takes place on a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic to the USA.

Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo play four stowaways who are forced to work for a pair of feuding gangsters to evade capture by the ship’s crew. After the ship docks, the zany quartet become unlikely heroes when one of the gangsters kidnaps the other’s daughter.

Out to Se a (1997)

Out to Sea is not Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon’s finest cinematic outing by any stretch of the imagination but it is a harmless bit of escapist fun.

Hunting for lonely women with hefty bank balances, Charlie (Matthau) coaxes his widower brother-in-law Herb (Lemmon) into working with him as a dance host on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise. Under the watchful eye of the cruise director (played by Brent Spiner from Star Trek ), Charlie pursues wealthy socialite Liz (Dyan Cannon) and Herb unexpectedly falls for Vivian (Gloria DeHaven).

The Parent Trap (1998)

This romantic comedy directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers stars Lindsay Lohan playing the role of identical twins who discover their relationship when they are sent to the same summer camp. The twins then set to work trying to reunite their parents.

While much of The Parent Trap takes place on land, there are some scenes set aboard Cunard’s now-retired Queen Elizabeth 2 (they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California).

  • Running time : 2 hours 7 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 86%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 70%

Like Father (2018)

In this predictable rom-com, jilted bride Rachel (Kristen Bell) ends up on her honeymoon Caribbean cruise with her estranged father Harry (Kelsey Grammer).

Like Father is set aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas , so lovingly filmed that it feels like an infomercial at times.

  • Running time: 1 hour 43 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 46%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 47%
  • Available for streaming on Netflix

Carry on Cruising (1962)

Carry on films are a guilty pleasure for me. Cinematic masterpieces they are not but they are silly fun from a more innocent time.

Carry on Cruising is very much in this mould.

Sid James plays Wellington Crowther, the captain of SS Happy Wanderer, who is forced to replace five absent crew members at short notice. Not only are these the most incompetent shipmates to set foot on deck, but the passengers are no picnic.

  • Running time: 1 hour 29 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: N/A
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 51%

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Shot in glorious Technicolor and featuring a razor-sharp screenplay, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is one of the best musical comedies set on the seven seas.

Showgirl Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) sets sail for Paris with her friend Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), where she plans to marry her wealthy beau, Gus Esmond Jr. However, her plan is placed in jeopardy by the watchful eye of a private detective hired by Mr Esmund Sr. and by Lorelei’s love of diamonds.

Royal Wedding (1951)

Do you fancy on-board entertainment Hollywood-style?

In the run-up to the wedding between the then Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, an American brother-and-sister song-and-dance team Tom (Fred Astaire) and Ellen Bowen (Jane Powell) set sail for London. Then love intervenes for both siblings.

  • Running time: 1 hour 32 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 92%

Shall We Dance? (1937)

Was there ever a more perfect recipe than Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers performing to the sublime music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin?

Set on a transatlantic sailing from Paris to New York, Shall We Dance? features Astaire as Pete “Petrov” Peters, a Russian ballet dancer, and Rogers as Linda Keene, a musical-comedy star. As a publicity stunt to prolong Linda’s career, her agent leaks to the press that the two performers are married.

Will a fake marriage turn into the real thing?

This exhilarating musical features some of the greatest songs ever composed, including They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off.

  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 84%

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

Starring Doris Day in her film debut and choreographed by Busby Berkeley, Romance on the High Seas is a farce with romantic misunderstandings at its heart. Georgia Garret (Day) is a nightclub singer who is hired to assume the identity of a socialite, Elvira Kent, on a cruise to Rio de Janeiro to allow Kent to remain at home to spy on her suspected unfaithful husband,

Filming locations for Romance on the High Seas included Rio de Janeiro and Cartegena in Colombia.

Dramatic Movies

Ship of fools (1965).

This eclectic group of passengers on a cruise ship bound for pre-war Germany from Mexico represents a microcosm of 1930s society. Picking up eight Oscar nominations and directed by Stanley Kramer, Ship of Fools features a stellar ensemble cast including Vivien Leigh (in her final film role), Lee Marvin and George Segal.

Although the action takes place almost entirely on an ocean liner, the movie was filmed on a soundstage at Paramount Studios.

  • Running time : 2 hours 29 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 64%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 77%

Table for Five (1983)

In this poignant melodrama, divorced father J.P. Tannen (Jon Voight) takes his three children on a Mediterranean cruise in an attempt to reconnect with them. However, he quickly realises that this is not that easy and is faced with an impossible decision when he learns of a tragedy back home.

Partly filmed on MS Vistafjord (built for the now defunct Norwegian American Line ), shooting locations for Table for Five included Rome , Genoa, Haifa in Israel , Athens and Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt.

  • Running time: 2 hours 2 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 67%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 59%
  • Not currently for streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime or to buy on DVD or Blu-Ray

Speed 2 Cruise Control  (1997)

Keanu Reeves was wise to decline the lead role in this lame sequel to Speed . In his place, Jason Patric teamed up with Sandra Bullock as they battled to get all of the passengers on a Caribbean cruise to safety when disaster strikes.

Seabourn Legend was rented for six weeks to film the movies and its multiple filming locations were used including those in the USA, the Caribbean and France.

  • Running time: 2 hours 5 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 4%

And the Award for the Worst Cruise Movie Ever Made Goes to …

Jack and jill (2011).

If you thought that Speed 2 Cruise Control  was bad, this is the cinematic turkey to beat all cinematic turkeys.

Improbably, Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill who join their family on a cruise vacation. Jack and Jill is so unfunny and its plot so preposterous, that I don’t have the will to say any more about it.

This became the first film to sweep the board of the Razzies, winning in each category including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, and Worst Screenplay. The cruise ship scenes were filmed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas .

  • Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 3%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 36%

And that’s a wrap.

Whether you are looking for inspiration to plan a cruise or simply looking for recommendations for a sofa and popcorn night at home, I hope that this cruise ship movies list hits the spot.

Watch, dream and book that cruise.

Table of Contents

BEST Cruise ship movies list

Like father (2018).

What Cruise Ship is Like Father set on: Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas

Like Father is one of the newest additions to the cruise ship movie genre. Starring two of Wandermust Family favourite actors in Kristin Bell and Kelsey Grammar. This movie is set almost entirely on the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas.

This cruise ship movie actually starts out on land where Kristen Bell is left at the alter who then proceeds to head out on her honeymoon cruise with her estranged father – played by the great Kelsey Grammar of Frasier fame.

Of all the movies filmed on cruise ships I think this one is my favourite as the ship really shines in this movie.

  • Jack and Jill

Jack And Jill - cruise ship movies list

Cruise Ship in Jack and Jill Movie: The Jack and Jill cruise ship is the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas!

I actually watched Jack and Jill on a cruise ship going round the Caribbean and I think watching it on a ship actually improved the experience

This Adam Sandler film where Adam Sandler plays both the lead roles of Jack and Jill, virtually estranged twins that go on a cruise together has been universally panned. And for its efforts won a record total of 10 Razzie Awards. For those that don’t know the Razzies are basically the polar opposite of the Oscars. They are handed out on the afternoon of Oscars night as a reward (if you can call it that) for the worst films of the year.

Despite all of these accolades (?) it is still a fun film to watch especially for fans of cruise ships who don’t take things too seriously.

Alvin and the chipmunks – Chipwrecked – one of the best kids movies set on cruise ships

Alvin and the chipmunks - one of the best kids movies set on cruise ships

Cruise Ship in Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked Movie is set on: Carnival Dream

This is one of the more family friendly cruise ship movies. Alvin and chipmunks sequel called Chipwrecked is the second sequel to the 2007 Chipmunks movie.

Whereas the first is set on land this film is set on the Carnival Dream cruise ship. In the movie the Chipmunks and Chipettes are heading to some music awards via cruise ship. As always with the chipmunk films they don’t listen to Dave and stay in the cabin and escape round the ship to cause mayhem which leads them to being shipwreck or as the film would tell you chipwrecked on an island awaiting rescue.

Parent trap

movies about cruise ships - the parent trap

This film from 1998 is actually a remake of the Hayley Mills classic from the 60s. When parents Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson split up they each decide to take one twin to raise each – what a great idea.

Years later siblings reconnect at summer camp and switch places until the parents are reunited onboard a cruise ship.

The ship isn’t specified however we know it was a Cunard ship that the finale was shot on.

Hotel Transylvania 3

My daughter is a huge fan of the Hotel Transylvania franchise which stars Adam Sandler, Andy Sandberg and Selena Gomez about vampires who run a hotel for monsters.

The third instalment in the franchise sees them joined by Kathryn Hahn, of  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty  and WandaVision   fame as the captain of a cruise ship for Monsters.

The ship sets sail to some great mythical locations such as the Lost Island of Atlantis and is a lot of fun for the whole family.

An affair to remember 1957

An Affair to Remember - one of the best cruise ship films/ romance cruise ship movies

This has to be one of the best romantic cruise ship films around dating from the romantic cruising age!

Although this film is more commonly associated with New York and the Empire State building as that is where the meeting at the end of the movie takes place, many people forget that the lovers meteor a cruise ship crossing to New York.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1953

This is another one of the classic films that features on this list. Gentleman prefers blondes stars the fabulous Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell as they cross the ocean on a luxury liner.

Monroe’s characters is newly engaged and is secretly being investigated by her soon to be father in law who suspects her of marrying for money.

There is a reason this film always features on the top 100 films of all time and as far as I am aware is the only film that makes it into these lists that features a cruise ship.

Royal Wedding 1951

A Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic set on board a ship. Expect big musical numbers, great dancing and fabulous costumes.

Shall We Dance? (1937)

The second film set on a cruise ship starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire that makes it into our list.

Death on the Nile – one of the best detective movies with cruise ships

Death on the Nile - one of the best detective movies with cruise ships

I am a huge Agatha Christie fan and my absolute favorite film based on her books is Death on the Nile.

It has a book that has warranted many adaptions including the recent 2020 version with Gal Godot and Kenneth Branagh. Personally I prefer the older versions but any of the films will delight any murder mystery fan.

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

This was Doris Day’s first ever movie and is set on a cruise that is headed to Rio.

Speed 2 cruise control – one of the best movies about cruise ships

romance cruise ship movies

When I was growing up Speed was one of my favorite films. Starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves this film set on a bus  quickly became a modern classic.

The sequel, Speed 2 Cruise Control did not receive such rave reviews but it still a fun watch. Sandra Bullock returned for this sequel set on a cruise ship but Keanu did not.

I would say that this film is not one to be watched if you are taking your first cruise and are a bit anxious but will be a lot of fun for seasoned cruises. In my opinion this is one of the best action packed movies that take place on a cruise ship.

Assault on a Queen

Assault on a Queen is a heist film set on a cruise ship starring the great Frank Sinatra. The film was made in the 60s so is one of the older films on the list but it is still well worth a watch.

The Poseidon Adventure 2006

This 2006 remake is another that isn’t for those that are anxious about cruising but is a great action packed film. A New Years Eve Party goes awry when a rogue wave hits a cruise ship on a transatlantic crossing.

Everyone knows what happened to this famous ocean liner but may not be the best film to watch if you are a new or anxious cruiser.

Table for Five

This 1983 comedy starring Jon Voight is another cruise film about an estranged father. This time Voight is estranged from three children and takes them on a cruise around the Med in an effort to reconnect.

Out To Sea 1997

This Walter Mathieu and Jack Lemmon vehicle sees the two posing as dance instructors on a cruise ship.

The film was filmed on an actual Holland America sailing, on a ship that was then called the Westerdam (another ship holds this name currently).

Carry on Cruising

I must admit to not being a fan of the Carry on films despite being British and brought up on these films. I personally find the humour very outdated. However if you like the Carry On series you will love Carry on cruising which has all the classic hallmarks of a carry on movie with the added bonus of being set onboard a cruise ship.

This 2002 Cuba Gooding Junior film was a critical and commercial flop and winner of several Razzies. Cuba Gooding Junior accidentally ends up on a gay cruise.

Unless you are desperate for a cruise ship movie I would personally give this one a pass.

Monkey Business (1931)

An early Marx brother film where stowaways have to avoid staff and being caught on a transatlantic voyage.

TV Shows Set on Cruise Ships

I know this isn’t a film but Frasier is one of my all time favorite sitcoms and one of my favorite episodes is The Voyage of the Damned episode taps into many peoples worst fears about what a cruise is like. It is hilarious and is a much watch for cruise fans.

7 Great Movies that Take Place on a Cruise

Picture of Sarah Bretz, Contributor

  • July 27, 2016

Most of us can probably say we love to watch a good movie now and then – especially ones that are centered on travel and adventure!  But did you know there are lots of films out there that are set fully or partially on our favorite method of transportation – cruise ships?  We’ve rounded up seven movies about cruising to watch…and this list is not extensive, so see what other ones you can find too!

1. Romance on the High Seas

This 1948 romance/comedy finds Doris Day’s character Georgia on a cruise instead of her friend Elvira – who backed out of her anniversary trip because she suspected her husband was cheating.  Little does Elvira know, her husband thinks she actually is on the cruise…and has hired a detective to spy on her.

DVD can be bought on Amazon by clicking here.

2. Jack and Jill

Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill in this hilarious 2011 comedy (yes he plays both!) aboard  Allure of the Seas.   Jill comes to visit for the holiday’s, and together with their family they head out on a cruise vacation.  They get off on the wrong foot, and hilarity ensues.  Although this is considered one of the worst movies ever made, it still showcases a lot of  Allure ‘s awesome features – so you decide whether you want to sit through it.

Can be rented on Amazon Instant Video.

3. Out to Sea

Retired friends Charlie (Walter Matthau) and Herb (Jack Lemmon) pose as dance instructors on this much loved 1997 film.  Charlie convinces his recently widowed brother-in-law to come on the cruise, not telling him that he’ll need to dance.  Ship scenes were filmed aboard Holland America’s original  Westerdam  (now  Thomson Dream ).

4. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

This 2011 movie is the third installment in the live-action chipmunks series, and this time the chipmunks, chipettes, and Dave go on a cruise aboard  Carnival Dream  for a musical awards show.  As usual, havoc erupts, and they find themselves on a deserted island.  This is a perfect movie for families to watch to get excited for an upcoming cruise.

5. Assault on a Queen

As you’ve probably guessed from the title, this 1966 film takes place on a Cunard ship –  Queen Mary  to be exact.  In it, Frank Sinatra (Mark) is a diver hired to search for sunken treasure.  He finds a U-boat, and their plan turns into a scheme to use the submarine to rob  Queen Mary.

6. Speed 2: Cruise Control

After saving a bus full of people in the first  Speed  movie, Annie (Sandra Bullock) is looking forward to a relaxing cruise with her boyfriend in this 1997 movie.  Their vacation becomes dangerous, though, when an explosion disables the ship’s communication and they realize someone else is controlling the vessel.  The film takes place aboard the luxury  Seabourn Legend  (now  Star Legend ).

7. The Parent Trap

While much of this 1998 movie takes place on land, there are some scenes set on a cruise ship, and I couldn’t help but include it.  Lindsay Lohan plays twins (yes, another twins movie where one person plays both!) that are working hard to reunite their parents, who haven’t seen each other in years.  While the ship scenes are set aboard  Queen Elizabeth 2,  they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California.

Carlos and Alexa PenaVega Talk About Their New Film, “Love at Sea”

The hallmark channel movie was filmed aboard harmony of the seas—and the couple received a special surprise on set.

romance cruise ship movies

Couple (and real-life Royal Caribbean enthusiasts ), Carlos and Alexa PenaVega star in The Hallmark Channel’s Love at Sea , premiering Saturday, August 11 at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 CT. Shot on board Harmony of the Seas , the movie takes viewers on a romantic adventure as the characters sail through the Caribbean, from The Bahamas to St. Kitts.

Alexa plays Olivia Grayham, an event planner who left her family’s hotel business to set out on her own career path. Tasked with organizing a large-scale event on board one of the world’s largest cruise ships, Olivia has accounted for every possible snafu—or so she thinks. When she discovers she’ll be working with unconventional Cruise Director Tony Rieves (played by Carlos), Olivia has to adjust to more than a few unexpected developments along the way. We won’t divulge any more details, but will say there are plenty of twists and turns, and a cameo by a pretty adorable baby.

Can’t catch the movie on Saturday, August 11? The Hallmark Channel will air it throughout August as part of its “Summer Nights” programming. Check out the additional dates here .

While on set, the PenaVegas and their 17-month-old son, Ocean, got a pretty major surprise : They were asked to be the cruise industry’s first-ever Godfamily for our newest (and the industry’s largest) ship, Symphony of the Seas ! The selection of a new ship’s guiding spirit, customarily a godmother, is rooted in a longstanding maritime tradition. It felt only right to ask the PenaVegas, seeing as the couple has celebrated some truly unforgettable life moments aboard our ships. They got engaged on Oasis of the Seas and spent their babymoon aboard Allure of the Seas .

We chatted with Carlos and Alexa about their time on board. Read on for what it was like to film on a ship, the activities they couldn’t get enough of on their downtime, and the splashy proposal they’ll never forget.

How does filming on board a cruise ship like Harmony of the Seas compare to other set locations you’ve worked on? Anything you particularly liked about filming at sea?

It was truly a work-cation. A little bit of filming and an amazingship to run around on during our downtime. Can we make all our movies aboard Royal Caribbean ships?

This will be your second Hallmark movie, but you’ve sailed with Royal Caribbean many more times than that! What keeps you coming back?

Cruising with Royal Caribbean is the best and ultimate family vacation . There are so many things to do on the ship! Between the food , entertainment , pool and kids’ areas , it’s an endless amount of fun in the middle of the ocean. And we really need to give credit to the staff: They make every vacation so special. The service on board is just incredible.

Carlos plays a new Cruise Director with his own unique way of doing things, and Alexa plays a highly organized event planner. How far is this from the truth?

Alexa: Ha! Carlos is a lot like his character. Me, not so much. Carlos is very organized but also such an adventurer, which I think is very true to his character, Tony. But my character, Olivia, needs to loosen up a bit. Although, I could really use her organization skills.

Who’s more organized at home?

Alexa: Carlos!

You were asked to be the Godfamily of  Symphony of the Seas  when you were filming on board Harmony of the Seas . What was the experience like?

Surreal! We didn’t even know it was a possibility. I mean, sure, we fantasized about it (like we said, we are obsessed with cruising), but there had never been a Godfamily before – so it was like a dream. When we both came down the Ultimate Abyss to confetti and a celebration, we thought we had won a prize for being the 50,000th guests to slide down or something. Wrong! You could see it on our faces. We were so confused. But once we figured it out, we were floored. It was such a special moment that we get to share forever. We are the Godfamily of the biggest ship in the world ! It doesn’t get cooler than that.

Your son Ocean makes his movie debut in Love at Sea . How was his first time on set?      We were so proud of him! We never thought we would become “those” parents who obsess over everything their kid does, but we are. We are so in love with that little boy. We can’t wait for everyone to see his debut.

Did you manage to fit in any favorite onboard activities while filming?

Yes! We both love the FlowRider . It’s a little tough at first, but once you get the hang of it you can’t stop. And of course, the soft serve by the pool is a must. One of our favorite restaurants is Wonderland . The food is phenomenal and the experience of eating there is so special. It’s unlike any restaurant we’ve ever been to.

Thank you, Carlos and Alexa! Don’t forget to watch the movie this weekend. And if you’re ready to book your own Caribbean adventure, head here to find your perfect cruise.

Top 10 Boat Movies: Best Sailing Films to Watch

Gearing up for your summer holiday? Or maybe you're looking for inspiration for your next sailing trip? Get in the mood with one of our favorite sailing flicks—from adventure to comedy to romance, these boat movies will have you hankering for a few weeks at sea.

Here are our top ten picks for movies about sailing:

1. 180° South (2010)

2. wind (1992), 3. captain ron (1992), 4. morning light (2008), 5. the dove (1974), 6. moby dick (1956), 7. wild caribbean (2007), 8. maidentrip (2013), 9. the new swiss family robinson (1998), 10. the love boat (1977-1987).

Have adventure on the mind? Kick off a movie marathon with this documentary on the epic 1968 journey of Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins.

Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and his best friend Tompkins took off on a whirlwind sailing journey to, yes, Patagonia in 1968. Along the way, they do some serious surfing but also discover the beauty of experiencing pure, raw nature. In this documentary, one of Chouinard's fans, Jeff Johnson, retraces the duo's steps to discover the thrill of sailing in nature for himself.

For those looking for some sporty action, the 1992 flick is one of the most exciting of yacht movies.

After losing the America's Cup (i.e., the biggest sailing race in the world), Matthew Modine makes it his ambition to win back the coveted title. Also following Modine's romance with Kate Bass, an aeronautical engineering graduate student, this boat movie is equal parts sporty and romantic—a one-two punch for a good movie night.

Watch the trailer!

1992 was the year of the movies about boating!

Also this year, Kurt Russell and Martin Short starred in Captain Ron , a comedy adventure about a man from Chicago who inherits an old yacht. The flick follows Short’s character, Martin Harvey, as he takes his wife and children to the Caribbean for a sailing adventure—which quickly turns into more than Harvey bargained for with Captain Ron (Russell) at the helm.

Can’t get enough racing action? Neither can we.

For a different twist on a movie about ships, try Morning Light . This documentary follows fifteen young sailors as they embark on six months of intensive training. Their goal? Race a high-performance 52-foot sloop in the Transpacific Yacht Race. From Hawaii to the high seas to the daring competition against the world's top professionals, this is one of the boat movies you don't want to miss.

When it comes to movies about boating, real life is truly often more exciting than fiction.

This 1974 film recounts the true story of 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham who embarks on a solo trip around the world in The Dove , his 23-foot sloop. Along the way, he meets a young woman who is on her own journey around the globe. With a dramatic biography that needs no embellishment, this film follows the adventures of Graham in life and love as he sails around the world from adolescence to adulthood.

You can't talk about boat movies without mentioning perhaps the most classic of them all: Moby Dick .

In this legendary tale, the eminent Gregory Peck stars as Captain Ahab, an old fishing captain obsessed with hunting down and killing the white whale who robbed him of his leg years ago. If you want to take a break from the comedies and romantic yacht movies, Moby Dick is one of the renowned classics that will surely make you feel the thrill of the sea.

Daydreaming about a holiday to the Caribbean?

Us, too. That's why we have yachts available for charter across the islands—from Antigua to St. Lucia to Martinique. Before setting sail, get a taste of the Wild Caribbean with this four-part documentary series on the Caribbean islands and sea. Talk about some major travel inspiration!

Check it out!

For those who can't get enough of sailing documentaries, this is one of the movies about sailing you must add to your list.

Maidentrip follows Laura Dekker as she sets out to become the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone—at the age of 14. The documentary takes us back before the start of her two-year voyage, from her early childhood sailing in New Zealand to life preparing for her epic feat.

If you're planning a sailing holiday for the family, there's no better way to get the kids excited for the upcoming travel than with this boat movie.

This cult classic follows Angelino Jack Robinson as he sails with his family from Hong Kong to Sydnery. From pirates to hidden treasure and more, this is one of the best sailing movies for families. While a private yacht charter won't get you tangled up with wild pirate chases and searches for buried treasure, this family film will certainly bring out the adventurer in you before your own sailing trip.

Nautical movies not enough for you? If you're looking for a great binge watching session to satisfy your craving for sailing, try The Love Boat .

This classic TV show follows the comedies, romances, and adventures of the passengers and crew of the cruise ship, Pacific Princess. Starring Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Lauren Tewes, and Gavin MacLeod, this retro sitcom was based off of Jeraldine Saunder's novel, which was inspired by her years working as a cruise ship hostess.

Have these boat movies left you with a serious craving for the sea?

If you want to live your life like you're the hero in your own movie, charter a yacht this year . Our yacht charter experts can make your favorite movie a real-life memory.

The 5 best cruise lines for romance

Gene Sloan

One might argue that just about any ocean cruise could qualify as a romantic getaway .

No matter where an ocean ship takes you, it will get you out onto the open water, where the panoramas are sweeping, the waves are mesmerizing and the sunsets are sublime. What could be more romantic than that?

But there are some lines that specialize in the sort of cruises that take things to a higher level. You'll cruise on ships that exude romance, with incredible amenities (think: pampering spas with couples treatments and special balcony dinners for two) or their very design (for romance, we're particularly fond of the sailing ships that several small lines operate).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

These also are lines that will take you to the ultimate romantic hideaways, such as the warm and breezy volcanic islands and atolls of the South Pacific .

In general, if you're looking for the ultimate in romance at sea, we recommend the cruising world's smaller, more intimate vessels, where you'll usually find a more personal experience than what you'll get on a big ship. Smaller vessels also cater more to couples and draw fewer families with children. If you're out for a relaxing romantic getaway, the last thing you want is a bunch of marauding tweens taking over the pool deck and hogging the hot tubs.

For romance, we also recommend sticking to vessels that offer cabins with private balconies (the bigger the better, in case you want to arrange a romantic private outdoor dinner for two) and spacious, luxurious bathrooms.

Ready to start dreaming about a future romantic cruise? Here are five lines to know.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

romance cruise ship movies

This little one-ship line punches way above its weight when it comes to offering romance at sea. For starters, it operates all its sailings in the South Pacific , which is an iconic destination for romantic getaways.

Its single vessel, the 332-passenger Paul Gauguin, is all about pampering. Upscale and intimate, the ship offers spacious cabins (a large portion of which have balconies), an expansive spa, three restaurants that cater to couples with lots of tables for two, and the superior service that comes from a high ratio of crew to passengers.

A huge portion of Paul Gauguin Cruises ' customer base are couples, often on honeymoons or celebrating anniversaries.

Based in Tahiti, Paul Gauguin's single ship offers a mix of itineraries in the region, including a classic seven-night voyage that takes in such iconic South Pacific islands as Huahine, Bora Bora and Moorea .

The details: Seven-night Tahiti and the Society Islands sailings with stops at Huahine, Bora Bora, Moorea and Taha'a start at $3,970 per person, based on double occupancy, including flights between Los Angeles and Tahiti. For more information, call 800-848-6172 or visit pgcruises.com .

Star Clippers

Is there anything more romantic than slicing through the sea under the power of the wind alone? That's the big allure of a voyage on the three vessels this small line operates — Royal Clipper, Star Clipper and Star Flyer.

All three of the ships are majestic sailing vessels of a size you probably didn't know still existed. The crown jewel of the fleet is the 227-passenger Royal Clipper, one of the largest sailing ships built over the past century. Boasting five masts and 42 sails, it's a true clipper ship styled like those that famously sped across the world's oceans in the 1800s. But don't worry: It's nowhere near as rustic as, say, The Black Pearl from "The Pirates of the Caribbean."

Built just 20 years ago, it offers an interior that's as modern as its exterior is old-fashioned, with such creature comforts as cabins with marble-clad bathrooms, a spa and three deck-top pools.

Star Clippers is best known for its trips in the Caribbean, where it offers the romance of sailing between many of the region's less-visited islands.

The details: Seven-night Caribbean sailings out of Antigua, Barbados and St. Martin start at $2,110 per person, based on double occupancy. For more information, call 800-442-0551 or visit starclippers.com .

Princess Cruises

There's a reason they call this the Love Boat line. Long known for its connection to the famed 1980s television show about romance at sea (which was filmed on a Princess Cruises ship), the Los Angeles-based big-ship operator has made catering to couples celebrating weddings, vow renewals and anniversaries one of its specialties.

The line markets heavily to people marking such milestones with special packages and programs. It's also a huge player in the market for destination weddings at sea, with a division that will help you arrange a ceremony on board or at an exotic location on land during a port call.

Among little touches, Princess will help you set up a Celebration Registry where friends and family can honor your milestone with contributions to the cost of cruise activities and other items of interest.

Princess was, notably, the first cruise line to host weddings on ships, offering ceremonies officiated by the ships' captains hosted in onboard chapels.

The details: Seven-night Caribbean cruises start at $439 per person, based on double occupancy. For more information, call 800-774-6237 or visit princess.com . (The line also has a dedicated Celebrations support team for those celebrating milestones on ships that is reachable at 855-500-7960.)

SeaDream Yacht Club

If sleeping under the stars while sailing in the middle of the ocean piques your interest, you'll want to take a look at this small, two-ship line, which is known for wonderfully intimate, upscale voyages in the Caribbean and Europe.

Among SeaDream's more romantic offerings are the Balinese daybeds located in private nooks atop its yacht-like vessels that offer the chance to spend a night under the stars.

Once you sign up for one of the overnights, the crew will spring into action, setting up the daybeds, which are designed for two, with sheets, pillows and blankets. Then they'll disappear to leave you alone with just the stars and the waves as your backdrop.

The two SeaDream vessels — SeaDream 1 and SeaDream 2 — are among the smallest cruise vessels at sea, with just 56 cabins apiece. They hold up to 112 passengers.

The details: Seven-night Caribbean sailings out of such islands as Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Martin start at $3,199 per person, based on double occupancy. For more information, call 800-707-4911 or visit seadream.com .

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises is another line that offers the romance of cruising on a sailing ship. Like Paul Gauguin Cruises, it's known for romantic getaways in the South Pacific.

A specialist in small-ship cruises, Windstar has six vessels in all, three of which are sailing vessels. Of those, one — the 148-passenger Wind Spirit — is based in the South Pacific year-round, offering a mix of seven- to 18-night sailings out of Tahiti.

Offering an experience distinctly different from the one available on the Paul Gauguin, Wind Spirit harnesses the warm South Pacific trade winds to glide short distances between such iconic French Polynesian islands as Moorea and Bora Bora. But like Paul Gauguin, it's a magnet for honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries and other milestones.

For travelers seeking a romantic getaway, there are few sailings more appealing.

Windstar in recent months has deployed a second vessel, the motor yacht Star Breeze, to French Polynesia on a seasonal basis. It will operate in the region through March 2022.

The details: Seven-night French Polynesia sailings on Wind Spirit start at $2,399 per person, based on double occupancy. For more information, call 800-258-7245 or visit windstarcruises.com .

Best Cruise Ship Movie Theatres

romance cruise ship movies

Movie theatres on cruise ships are getting bigger, better, and more “decked out.”  If you want to watch a movie in style while cruising on the high seas, here’s a list of the best cruise ship movie theatres.

Disney Cruise Line – Buena Vista Theatre Unsurprisingly, Disney Cruise Line has one of the best cruise ship move theatres. The Buena Vista Theatre is available on all four of its ships, Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , Disney Wonder , and Disney Magic .  The theatre channels the golden age of film with its Art Deco stylings and was the first to have 3D movies onboard its ships.  You can get refreshments from the concession stand before your movie. Check out Disney

Cunard Line – Royal Court Theatre & Illuminations Cunard Line offers two different awesome movie theatres onboard several of its ships.  Cunard’s Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth cruise ships have the Royal Court Theatre, where you can reserve a private box complete with service including desserts and champagne.

Meanwhile, Queen Mary 2 is home to a planetarium that doubled as a 3D movie theatre, called Illuminations.

Carnival Cruises – IMAX Theatre Carnival Cruises Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon cruise ships have the first IMAX movie theatres at sea.  You can experience movies on the ship’s massive IMAX screen and immerse yourself in some of the best movies at sea, complete with refreshments available at the concession stand – because we all love snacks and candy while watching a movie.

Princess Cruises – Movies Under the Stars Princess Cruises has a unique movie theatre onboard its ships with its Movies Under the Stars program.  At night, the poolside deck turns into a magical amphitheater with comfortable seating and blankets, while a movie plays on the huge outdoor screen.  You can also watch various sporting events such as the Superbowl and basketball finals, as well as video game tournaments for kids.

Royal Caribbean – Outdoor Movie Night Royal Caribbean also offers an outdoor movie night on the big screen under the stars.  The outdoor movie night on Royal Caribbean’s ships is a great family-friendly movie event.

Viking Orion – Explorers’ Dome If you are interested in space and the night sky, this unique movie theatre/planetarium on Viking Cruise’s Viking Orion is perfect for you.  The planetarium is the highest-definition 7K planetarium in the world, according to Viking Cruises . In addition to awesome views of the night sky, the planetarium doubles as a 3D movie theatre showing two 3D films, “Journey to Space” and “Under the Arctic Sky,” as well as other enrichment programs and films.
