Learn more about Rwanda

Best time to visit rwanda.

Rwanda has a tropical highland climate, with temperatures being pleasantly warm most of the year. March to May is the wet season, so expect frequent rain and thunderstorms during this period, which can make trekking and other outdoor activities uncomfortable at times.

Culture and customs

Rwanda has a rich, vibrant culture based on traditional dance, crafts song and drumming. History and culture is communicated through the generations with songs, poetry and stories providing links to the past. Visitors to Rwanda should catch a cultural performance of dynamic dance and music to appreciate the heritage and identity that is carried by these songs and dances. There are three main ethnic tribes in Rwanda - Hutu, Tutsi and Twa, each having their similarities and differences. The Twa comprise less than 1% of the population, and are hunter-gatherers, having lived in Rwanda for centuries. The Hutu and Tutsi are not divided by ethnicity but by a social caste system, with the Tutsi traditionally living pastoral lives and being members of the ruling class, and the Hutu traditionally being seen as peasant farmers. This is malleable though, as intermarriage between the two is quite common, so children may have a Hutu father and a Tutsi mother. While this has lead to much division and conflict in the past, Rwanda has more recently enjoyed 15 years of relative harmony, with these ethnic groups living and working alongside each other in peace.  Foreigners and travelers will find most Rwandans live simple lives, devoid of modern conveniences and perhaps it is because of this that Rwandans are known for being friendly, genuine and very accommodating to visitors. Homestays in particular provide valuable insights into the culture of Rwanda.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.  Rwandan food typically consists of simple meals made from locally grown produce. Sweet potato, corn, peas, beans and cassava feature heavily, and are usually fried or cooked in a stew. Spices and seasonings aren’t common in Rwandan cooking, so food may be a little bland for some – but just right for others who prefer their food less spicy.

Things to try in Rwanda

1. Fresh fruit

Bananas, avocados, mangoes and papaya are plentiful in Rwanda and are a cheap, fresh snack when bought from markets and street carts.

2. Frites-banane (fried plantains)

Fried Plantains are a delicious snack and found just about everywhere in Rwanda.

Barbecued beef, goat and chicken are available at roadside street stalls in the larger cities.

Beer is popular with the men of Rwanda (women rarely drink). Primus, Mutzig and Amstel are the main beers available in Rwanda, as well as locally brewed banana beer.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with Uganda , Burundi, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda is a densely populated, landlocked nation. Covered in grassland, mountains and rolling hills, most people in Rwanda live in villages surrounded by farmland. Plantations of cash crops like coffee and tea are common, but small subsistence farming is the main source of income for most Rwandans living in rural areas.

The dense jungles and national parks of Rwanda house many species of animal including gorillas, baboons, chimpanzees and prolific birdlife. Unlike many other African bodies of water, freshwater Lake Kivu is free from crocodiles and hippos, so it’s a great spot for swimming, fishing and other recreational activities.

History and government

Early history.

The original inhabitants of Rwanda, the Twa, lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle for centuries before the arrival of the Hutu people. Then the Tutsi brought with them a feudal system of land ownership and society. In 1890 Germany took control of Rwanda, and ruled until 1916 when the Belgians overpowered the German forces during World War I. Under Belgian rule, clashes between the Tutsi and the Hutu were frequent and a precursor to the violence of the 1990s. Independence was granted in 1962, and the Hutu majority came into power. Because of this, Tutsi people were marginalized, with less access to education and employment opportunities. This imbalance created simmering tensions within Rwanda, culminating in armed conflict and displacement of people.

Recent history

In 1994, Rwanda erupted into civil war following the death of the president in a plane crash (the plane was shot by a missile while trying to land in Kigali). Months of bloodshed ensued - it's estimated that close to a million people were killed within a period of 90 days. Millions of Rwandans fled into neighboring Uganda and Tanzania to escape the violence, murder and looting that had taken over their country. Due to the loss of life and infrastructure caused by the genocide of 1994, many Rwandans today live in poverty. Despite this, Rwanda is currently rising out of hard times to move into the future with increased prosperity and improved living conditions. The economy is slowly improving due to a flourishing tourism industry and a new government that has invested in education and infrastructure

Top 10 experiences of Rwanda

1. gorillas in the mist.

Trekking through the steamy jungle is well worth it once you set eyes upon a family of silverback gorillas. Watch them interact and play and marvel at how similar they are to humans. Watching these rare creatures is utterly captivating and engrossing – you won’t want to leave.

2. National treasures

Stop in at the Butare National Museum, considered one of the best museums in East Africa. Featuring tribal art, traditional housing, musical instruments and other artefacts, this museum offers visitors a great grounding in Rwandan history and culture.

3. Moving memorial

Be touched by the spirit of the Rwandan people when visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. This place is dedicated to the people who lost their lives in the genocide of 1994, and provides a peaceful space for survivors to mourn and ultimately heal.

4. Chill out lakeside

Experience the serenity and beauty of Rwanda’s Lake Kivu. Whether you’re enjoying a relaxing walk on the shores or heading out on a boat, Lake Kivu provides a pocket of aquatic splendor in a landlocked country.

5. Monkey magic

Have fun finding chimps, baboons and monkeys in the trees of the Nyungwe National Park. The dense rainforest terrain offers the perfect environment for these amazing creatures to live in.

6. Home sweet home

7. To market

Strolling through the markets of Kigali is a great way to get acquainted with this up-and-coming city. Buy some trinkets or fresh produce, chat with locals and watch market-life in action.

8. Beach bliss

The small town of Gisenyi is home to unspoilt beaches where you won't have to fight for a spot to laze on them. Enjoy the isolation and make the most of the space in this pocket of paradise.

9. Small town charm

Known as the gateway town to the gorillas, Ruhengeri offers a change of pace to the crowds of Kigali. Be touched by the warmth and sincerity of the local people while staying in this town of about 80,000 people.

10. Feel the beat

Soak up a bit of nightlife by getting your groove on to African and Western pop music in one of Kigali’s busy nightspots. New Cadillac and Republika Lounge are popular with both locals and expats, so why not see how the city comes to life after dark.

Rwanda’s markets are filled with bright delights, from fresh fruit and vegetables to vibrant fabrics. Souvenir-wise, the best picks are handicrafts and artwork by local artists. Woven baskets, colorful fabric bags, interesting jewelry, wood carvings and terracotta pots all make great mementos of your trip or gifts for friends back home. It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and Events in Rwanda

With the majority of Rwandans being Christian, Christmas is an important time for most. Rwandans typically don’t celebrate Christmas in a commercial way, with most foregoing gift giving and choosing to spend time at church and with family. Church services are usually a formal affair and run for several hours, with locals getting dressed up in their finest attire to attend mass. Time is then spent eating and socializing with family and friends.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Safari Tours

Rwanda is famous for its gorilla trekking opportunities in the Virunga Mountains. This is where Dian Fossey researched and habituated mountain gorillas in the 1960s. Although gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the country has a lot more to offer. In fact, if gorilla trekking is beyond your budget, Rwanda is still worth visiting as an up-and-coming destination offering primate walks, volcano hikes and bird watching in Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe National Park, plus boat trips on Lake Kivu in the Rift Valley and classic safaris in search of the Big Five in low-key Akagera National Park.

8 Questions About Rwanda Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

rwanda travel packages

When is the best time to visit Rwanda?

“Rwanda safari trips are available year-round and the best time depends a bit on your personal interest and tolerance for rainy conditions. Most people come to Rwanda for gorilla trekking, which can be done throughout the year. However, the wet climate in the Virunga Mountains (home of the gorillas) can make trekking a challenge, especially in the peaks of the Wet season (March, April, October and November). The driest months (June to August) are best for gorilla trekking and also recommended for hiking in Nyungwe National Park. Most of the primates in Nyungwe can also be located throughout the year, but chimps are easier to track during the Wet, as they tend to move farther into the forest when food becomes scarce. Having said all that, if you have good weatherproof gear and you don’t mind being caught in the rain on occasion, the Wet season months have their advantages as they tend to be less crowded and lodges often offer lower rates. Gorilla permits are also easier to obtain in the Wet season.”

What are the major attractions in Rwanda?

“Rwanda is a beautiful little country most known for the genocide of 1994. The good news is that the country largely recovered from this terrible event and is now very safe and totally geared for tourism. The Rwandan authorities managed to keep their gorillas safe throughout this turbulent time, and seeing these gentle giants has become one of the top attractions in Africa. So, mountain gorilla trekking is by far the prime attraction in Rwanda and most tourists will visit the country for that reason alone, often adding a few days in Rwanda to a safari in Kenya or Tanzania. However, there is a lot more to see and do in Rwanda than gorilla trekking. Other attractions include golden monkey treks and climbing one of the volcanoes in the Virungas. Nyungwe National Park is worth a visit as well. This beautiful, high-altitude forest is remarkably accessible and home to 13 primate species, including chimpanzees. Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah reserve. It doesn’t quite compare to the likes of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, but this scenic park has a lot to offer in terms of wilderness appeal. Following recent reintroductions, it is also home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo).”

What does Rwanda gorilla trekking cost?

“Tracking mountain gorillas doesn’t come cheaply. In 2017 Rwanda doubled its prices for a gorilla trekking permit, which brings the current price to US$1,500. The justification for this high fee is that there are only 12 habituated groups of gorillas that can be visited by tourists in Volcanoes National Park , and each group can be visited by a maximum of eight tourists per day. So this makes a limit of 96 permits a day. Is it worth it? If you can afford it, it is worth every penny. How can you put a price on such an amazing experience, described by many who’ve done it as a travel highlight of their life?”

What wildlife can I expect to see when on safari in Rwanda?

“A Rwanda safari is quite different from most classic East African safari holidays. Most of the activities here require hiking in rainforests. Aside from gorillas, other primates can be tracked, such as chimpanzees and golden monkeys. Viewing any of these primates is a very rewarding experience but difficult to compare to a safari in the Masai Mara, for example. Longer Rwanda holidays can include a trip to Akagera National Park for a more conventional safari. Akagera suffered hugely from human encroachment and poaching in the past, but this is now mostly under control thanks to the commitment of African Parks. Animals are still quite skittish and you have to work a bit harder for your sightings than in some other iconic savannah parks, but a trip to Akagera shouldn’t be missed.”

How safe is Rwanda for tourists?

“Rwanda is a safe destination. Unfortunately, the country is still stained by the memory of the genocide, which occurred as a result of historical conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi peoples. The genocide took place in 1994 and there have been no incidents since. Today, Rwanda feels like quite a well-run country and the people are very gracious and friendly. Many have returned after years of exile, which gives Rwanda quite a cosmopolitan feel as many of the returnees have studied abroad. As in any country, most crime occurs in cities and urban areas and visitors should take normal safety precautions in these places. You are unlikely to encounter any problems on guided activities if you have booked with a reputable operator.”

How do you choose a reliable tour operator for a Rwanda trip?

“Most specialist Africa tour operators will be able to add a Rwanda gorilla trekking package to any African safari. If you’re considering a holiday in Rwanda, as opposed to an add-on to a trip to another country, you should carefully choose your operator to ensure you end up in the right hands. Checking the operators and Rwanda gorilla trekking tours offered on SafariBookings.com is a good start. Always read the customer reviews (but never base an opinion on a handful of reviews only) and consider using a local operator. This means all your money will go into the Rwandan economy and you’ll be doing your bit to support local communities. The downside is that small operators don’t always have the backup and resources to deal with a situation if things go wrong, such as a vehicle breakdown. International operators, on the other hand, can include your flights in a Rwandan safari package.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“Rwanda has come a long way since its early days of safari tourism a few decades ago. There are now top-notch accommodation options in all the main tourist destinations. Where once there were only a handful of local guesthouses available, there are now tourist-class hotels in or around Volcanoes, Nyungwe and Akagera National Parks. In recent years, several small, exclusive safari lodges (so popular in more mainstream safari countries) have opened as well. This should help put Rwanda on the map for the repeat African visitor who loves the classic safari holiday.”

What can I expect from a safari in Rwanda?

“Although Akagera National Park is developing as a great savannah safari destination, Rwanda safaris are not on the same level as classic safaris offered in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana. So, the word ‘safari’ might be slightly misleading. Most people come to Rwanda for the activities offered in the rainforest environment: gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, volcano hikes and bird watching. Seeing mountain gorillas is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and most people walk away in awe of these magnificent gentle giants living their life in this stunning rainforest setting. Spending an hour with them is an absolute privilege. Because of this, and since gorilla trekking has been publicized more in recent years, it has become a bucket-list activity for many general tourists. The other activities will mostly appeal to the more active traveler. Rwanda has high rainfall throughout the year, so you’ll be walking a lot on slippery forest paths and you might well get wet on a few occasions. The daily limit on the gorilla permits means tourist numbers tend to be low wherever you go, and you’ll enjoy a feeling of exclusivity and discovery. The Rwandan people are extremely proud of their country and very welcoming to visitors.”

Rwanda Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Mountainous and land-locked, little Rwanda – about the size of the state of Maryland – is becoming a big draw for safari-goers in central Africa. Its national parks harbor endangered mountain gorillas as well as chimpanzees and other primates who live among the rainforests. Guided safaris are essential when tracking these magnificent and elusive creatures.

Rwanda first burst into world news in 1994, when some 800,000 of its citizens died in a three-month mass genocidal slaughter ignited by long-simmering ethnic hostilities between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes.

It was further inflamed by the Hutu government, which urged Hutus to kill all Tutsis – even their friends and neighbors. After the Tutsis fought back and a coalition government was negotiated, the tiny country has since been at peace, and is now emerging as a prime safari destination – most notably for tracking rare and elusive mountain gorillas found in its Volcanoes National Park.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

As one of the most popular tour options in Rwanda , gorilla trekking is a thrilling, challenging, and rewarding  way to explore the  Rwandan rainforests and observe their gentle giant residents up close .

Guided tours of these gorilla habitats are required, as there are important permits that must be attained beforehand as well as strict regulations that are followed.

There are only a small number of viewing permits available daily, the price of which varies by tour. This is a result of the critically endangered status of mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, who are under the vigilant care of park rangers.

While travelers may feel a bit hesitant to come up-close and personal with the gorillas and their families, they are habituated and therefore used to human interactions. Even still, viewing them from a comfortable distance is usually the best course of action, although guides will make allowances as they see fit.

Given the arduous hiking through bamboo forests that are required to reach the gorillas’ habitats, it is recommended that travelers wear pants, long-sleeved shirts, and hiking boots. Cameras will be useful for photographing the gorilla families or taking portrait photos. Since the national parks that protect these gorillas are highly regulated, visitors are constantly monitored by rangers to ensure both their safety and that of the animals.

While travelers may wish to spend days amongst the primate families, guided tours are limited to one hour in groups of 10 or less. Therefore, in order to ensure that you are able to partake in this unforgettable experience, book a guided tour of Rwanda’s rainforests in advance.

Wildlife in Rwanda

From plains to rainforests, and rivers in between, Rwanda is gifted with not only several hundred endangered species of birds, but also populations of critically endangered mammals and reptiles. The country’s elevation of 3,000 kilometers above sea level provides unique habitats for a variety of animals, some of which are only found in a handful of places outside of Rwanda’s national parks.

Travelers to Rwanda’s Akagera National Park are able to view lion prides, zebras, giraffes, and elephants. Hippopotamuses and crocodiles make their homes in the Kagera River and other ones that run through Rwanda while rhinoceroses and antelopes roam the surrounding plains.

Guided safari tours, which include gorilla trekking opportunities are widely available in Rwanda. June - September is considered to be the best time to undertake one of these tours, as it is when the country is experiencing its long dry season. For those interested in botanical life, Rwanda also boasts various species of grassland savannah flowers and trees.

While the country’s rainforested national parks host the majority of its wildlife and plants, even they are becoming threatened as Rwanda’s population continues to swell. Conservation efforts are underway to maintain the space needed for Rwanda’s wildlife, but it is still crucial to respect all guidelines on tours, especially those given by park rangers.

Disturbances or destruction of wildlife habitats is taken very seriously by Rwandans, a fact that is important for travelers to remember as they explore its vast biodiversity.

Birding Tours in Rwanda

While many travelers to Rwanda look forward to gorilla trekking, birding tours in Rwanda are not to be overlooked. As Rwanda has over 600 species of birds, some of which are critically endangered, it is no surprise that guided tours of Akagera and Nyungwe national parks will emphasize the importance of looking up while on the trails.

Whether or not you are a birding expert, the brilliant colors and unique calls will highlight the majesty of the land that these animals have made their homes in. It is imperative that travelers follow the observation rules set by the parks and their tour guides in order to maximize the potential of seeing birds.

Note that guided tour groups are usually small, as this minimizes the possibility of birds being scared away. This means that booking a guided tour in advance is necessary, as it ensures a spot in the limited groups.

In the same way, travelers will be asked to remain on the designated paths with their groups in order to protect the habitat they are viewing, as any disturbances of it will be felt by the animals that live within in.

That being said, when flushing birds in order to view them, it should not be done frequently or without the help of tour guides. Touching birds or their eggs are expressly prohibited, but taking pictures to convey their natural beauty to others is highly recommended.

Top National Parks in Rwanda

Although Rwanda is not an especially large country, it does have its fair share of national parks that have gained world recognition for their conservation efforts. Volcanoes National Park is home to five of the eight volcanoes that Rwanda hosts, making it a prime location for the mountain gorilla families that are protected within its borders.

Travelers can also enjoy exploring Musanze Caves at the feet of these colossal volcanoes after they finish a gorilla trekking tour or before they start. Hiking trails lead travelers to flooded craters, which make for stunning lake-side photos.

At Nyungwe Forest National Park , mountain gorillas are nowhere to be found but various species of monkeys, birds, and chimpanzees instead  make their homes among the rainforests. As one of the largest protected swathes of untouched rainforest in Rwanda, visitors are relegated to specific hiking paths.

However, this does not dampen the fun and adventure that comes with visiting Nyungwe Forest National Park, as the Igishigishigi Trail is the highest one in East Africa. Located in the canopy level of the rainforest, the suspension bridge leads to the highest mountain in the national park, making it a very handy way to examine and transverse the surrounding biodiversity.

Akagera National Park consists of not only swamps and savannahs, but also forests, making it habitable for creatures of all sizes. While hippopotamuses and crocodiles swim in the rivers, are bird species fly above lion prides and giraffe and elephant herds.

Travelers can participate in safari or river excursions through guided tours that extend into all aspects of the park, including its renowned accommodation options. When visiting Rwanda, the hardest decision you may have will be deciding which national park to visit first.

Rwandan cultural activities

As a country that has seen many political and social changes, Rwanda is unique for its maintenance of old traditions amidst the rise of new ones. Beyond the gorilla trekking tours in the mountains are visits to collections of art, traditions, as well as genocide memorial sites.

For those in Kigali, a guided tour of the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a way to engage with the past tragedies of Rwanda. Visitors to this site, along with Nyamata Church, are able to pay respects to the victims as well as understand the history behind the genocide that devastated the world.

In the same city, travelers can view contemporary African art at Inema Arts Centre. While there are also workshops for resident artists in the building, travelers can view the many different art installations on the property. Exhibits alter with the artist, but the museum maintains a high variety of mediums and international sponsorships.

In the same way, the Niyo Cultural Centre works to showcase the art of primarily Rwandan artists. Guided tours of the museum, as well as the educational dance and drumming classes, may be arranged in advance.

Further from the capital is the King’s Palace in Nyanza. Guided tours of this site will not only reveal the meaning behind the artwork that depicts European and Rwandan interactions over the years, but also the many ancient traditions that are still continued today. These include singing to the ornately decorated and well-cared for Inyambo cattle that live behind the domed complex.

Rwandan Cuisine

For Rwandans, it is common to have a light, simpler breakfast, followed by a similarly light lunch. Dinners are the heaviest meals and are the ones most likely to have meat if they do at all.

A refusal to partake in a meal that is offered to you in considered to be a serious insult, which is a cultural value that travelers should consider as they explore Rwanda. A staple of Rwandan cuisine is vegetables , with minimal emphasis on animal products. This means that most meals are made with local ingredients, especially ones that can be grown year-round such as potatoes.

Plantains , as well as cassava leaves or tubers, are traditionally found in at least one if not two meals a day. Between meals, Rwandans will often snack on tropical fruits which are abundant in the country. What meat is consumed is oftentimes fish , especially along the lakes or rivers where tilapia is popular.

Beef and chicken are also widely available, although they are less likely to be consumed than fish. Travelers will oftentimes see meat-skewers, locally known as brochettes at street vendors or offered at restaurants.

Marinated in various spices and sauces, goat meat or beef skewered and cooked over a charcoal grill, providing a tasty meal option no matter the time of day.

The Capital: Kigali

Travelers to Kigali , the national capital, will be happy to find themselves amidst clean streets and well-repaired roads. This is because, even as coffee shops and other modern conveniences continue to spring up throughout the country, Rwandans still practice “Umuganda” Day.

With roots in traditional small agricultural communities, Umuganda Day compels Rwandans across the country to close shops and clean, fix, or act to benefit their neighborhood. Therefore, while Kigali is one of the busiest cities in Rwanda, it also serves as a model for how small community efforts can have large-scale, positive impacts.

In the same way, Kigali hosts the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is both a museum and mass burial site for nearly 250,000 victims. The memorial’s museum details not just the events leading up to the genocide, but also what occurred during it, with emphasis on prevention of similar atrocities in the future.

The Niyo Art Gallery and the Inema Arts Center are also located in the capital city. While the Niyo Art Gallery focuses on artists and dancers from Rwanda, the Inema Arts Center showcases a much more expansive, contemporary African art collection. At the Kimironko Market, travelers can not only find fresh fruits and vegetables, but also authentic handicrafts. This makes it an ideal location for souvenir-searches, new additions to wardrobes, or even a traditional Rwandan meal.

What to Expect From Accommodations in Rwanda

Although Rwanda is still in the process of expanding its tourism industry, travel accommodations are still plentiful. The Radisson Blu and Marriott hotel chains have locations in Kigali and are very popular with travelers for their international fame. However, travelers may opt to stay in the Kigali Serena Hotel or Heaven Boutique Hotel as well, both of which are locally owned and geared towards improving Rwanda’s reputation in tourism.

All hotels in Rwanda are equipped with the conveniences usually found in other hotels, including pools, gyms, and air-conditioning. Rooms tend to be smaller, which is important for travelers to consider when making accommodation plans with their guided tour groups. When engaged in gorilla trekking or birding tours, travelers in Rwanda can expect to stay in lodges or hostels near the sites they are exploring.

While this may not sound appealing to some travelers, Rwanda has worked hard to provide travelers with the same luxury accommodations and modern conveniences that they find in cities. Therefore, many of the hotels and lodges found in national parks have not just spas and delicious food options, but also stunning views and close proximity to Rwanda’s famous biodiversity.

TV and internet are found in all luxury hotels and lodges, which is useful for travelers who wish to plan their next guided tour through Rwanda’s urban and natural landscapes.

Rwanda FAQ's

Rwanda is referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills”, a landlocked country filled with breathtaking scenery, nestled south of the Equator in east-central Africa. Kigali is the capital city located in the heart of the country on the Ruganwa River, ranked the safest capital city in Africa. The country and its citizens have made impressive, miraculous strides over the last quarter of a century, as the country marked its 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Rwanda is a fascinating country to visit, it was ranked as one of the safest countries in the world in 2017, and it is also the cleanest country in Africa. Many know the country that was featured in the film Gorillas in the Mist with Dian Fossey and her work with the Gorillas. The country is filled with wonderful people, impressive art, delicious fish, a lovely lake, and so much more. There are three national parks to explore and a large wildlife population, as well as burgeoning tea and coffee industries.

Ideally positioned in the center of Rwanda, Kigali, extends across several hills and valleys, with good road links to the rest of the country. The verdant capital city is pleasantly low-key yet dynamic and progressive, with just over one million inhabitants. Kigali is the perfect starting point for an unforgettable gorilla trek - one of Africa`s most fascinating wilderness experiences.

The best time to visit Rwanda is during the drier period from June through September, and from December to early February. This is a time when you have a greater chance of spotting the country’s undoubted highlight; the mighty mountain gorilla families. The rainy season's March to May and a shorter rain season in November is a perfect time to head south and visit Nyungwe National Park to track chimpanzees. The country favors travel all year round with fairly temperate weather around 63 F to 81 F, due to its position just south of the Equator. Kigali enjoys an average temperature of around 70 F.

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel, and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

Getting around Rwanda can be done via taxi buses that are abundant all over the country. They offer a cheap way to get from city to city, easily recognizable the buses are white and are sometimes marked with funny names or sportswear logos. Taxis can be expensive and harder to find, an average taxi ride within the capital city of Kigali costs about 2,500-5,000 RWF. Moto Taxis or Motorbike trips are available and can be a fast and cheap way to get around within the cities. A trip within Kigali costs around 300-1,000 RWF. Public buses allow visitors to venture out of town, they are safe, cheap, and reliable. The major bus station is located in Kigali, named Nyabugogo, bus trips cost between 2,000-4,000 RWF. The roads in Rwanda are well maintained and the main roads are generally in good condition, however much slower than European or American roads. Rental cars are available at the Gregoire Kayibanda International Airport as well as other locations in major cities such as Kigali. Renting a car is useful when exploring the gorilla parks and other attractions like the Volcanoes National Park. The general cost of a rental car is around US$50 per day.

The official currency of Rwanda is the Rwandan franc (Rfr), US Dollars are widely accepted, be sure to exchange your dollars for the Rwandan franc upon arrival. There are exchange desks found in the airport and at banks. ATMs can be found in Kigali and nearly all major cities. Credit and debit cards are becoming more widely accepted, Visa is the more widely accepted form of payment, as well as Mastercard. Tipping is at your discretion and greatly appreciated, cash is usually preferred, tip drivers around US$10 a day, and trekking porters US$2.

The official language spoken in Rwanda is native Kinyarwanda, however, English and French are widely spoken. Many people speak English, especially in the service industry at hotels and restaurants. Most of the inhabitants have a good comprehension of the English language. We recommend you get a good English-Rwandan guidebook and learn common phrases such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you, and numbers 1-10. Travel Tip: Malaria is prevalent throughout the country and taking prophylactics is recommended. Be specific when speaking to your doctor and tell them you are traveling to Rwanda since chloroquine is not effective in this region. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is an entry requirement.

Why you must vacation in rwanda..

Besides gorilla trekking , the rise of Rwanda as a top tourist spot in East Africa is well-deserved and should be considered for your next vacation. The country's dedication to conservation and sustainable tourism has transformed it into a top destination for both wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. With its captivating landscapes, diverse ecosystem, and distinctive cultural heritage , Rwanda is an excellent choice for those seeking an authentic African wildlife safari encounter.

A key factor that distinguishes Rwanda as a top safari destination is its remarkable achievements in safeguarding gorillas. The Volcanoes National Park is a haven for the endangered mountain gorillas, offering visitors a rare chance to go on gorilla trekking expeditions . This extraordinary opportunity lets you observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, witnessing their intricate social dynamics. The encounter with a mountain gorilla is an unforgettable memory.

Rwanda's dedication to conservation goes beyond gorilla preservation. Sheltering the renowned Big Five, Akagera National Park in the east provides captivating wildlife safari experiences . The park allows for exhilarating game drives to spot lions , elephants, buffalos, leopards, and rhinos. Its scenic setting, adorned with lakes, savannahs, and wetlands, enhances the allure of your safari journey.

Yet, Rwanda's appeal extends beyond its wildlife safaris. In the far southwest lies Nyungwe Forest National Park , a sanctuary for primates and birds. This lush rainforest shelters various primate species, including chimpanzees and colobus monkeys. Bird enthusiasts can revel in the park's diverse avian population, encompassing over 300 species. Exploring Nyungwe Forest National Park immerses you in a mystical world where nature's marvels unfold before your eyes.

Beyond the well-known safari destinations, Rwanda boasts hidden treasures waiting to be explored. The remote and breathtaking Gishwati-Mukura National Park unveils the country's reforestation endeavors and provides a habitat for rare species such as chimpanzees and golden monkeys. The serene and less-frequented Lake Kivu offers a tranquil getaway with its unspoiled beaches and opportunities for water-centric activities.

Imagine being surrounded by nature's raw power and beauty, with a 400-pound silverback gorilla and his family nearby. A safari adventure in Rwanda is more than just a trip; it's a transformative experience that will ignite a passion for the untamed beauty of our world.

Best time to visit Rwanda for safari

The best time to visit Rwanda for a vacation safari depends on the specific experiences you are seeking. Rwanda has a temperate climate throughout the year , with two distinct rainy seasons from February to May and September to December. The dry seasons, from June to August and December to January , is the best time to visit Rwanda for safari.

Best time for gorilla treks

If your main goal is gorilla trekking, the dry season (Jun to Aug and Dec to Jan) is the best time to see gorillas in Rwanda. The trails are less muddy, making navigating through the dense forests easier. The dry season also offers clearer views of the surrounding landscapes, allowing for better photography opportunities. However, it's important to note that gorilla trekking permits are in high demand during the peak tourist seasons in Rwanda, so booking well in advance is highly recommended.

Best time for wildlife spotting

For game drives and wildlife spotting in Akagera National Park, the dry seasons also offer the best chances of seeing a variety of animals in Rwanda. During these periods, the animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. The lush greenery of the wet seasons can make it more challenging to spot wildlife; even better, Rwanda's landscapes are gorgeous during this time.

Best time for birdwatching

Birdwatching enthusiasts will find Nyungwe Forest National Park most rewarding during the rainy seasons, as the forest comes alive with the sounds and colors of numerous bird species. The wet seasons , from March to May and October to November , offer a unique opportunity to witness the park's vibrant birdlife in full swing. The lush landscapes burst with renewed life, attracting an array of migratory birds and offering a unique opportunity to witness diverse species in their full splendor.

Best time for festivals

Kwita Izina , the gorilla naming ceremony , occurs annually in September . It is a highly anticipated event where newly born gorillas in Volcanoes National Park are given names as part of Rwanda's conservation efforts and the successful conservation of mountain gorillas. Umuganura , the Harvest Festival , takes place on the first Friday in August . Rwandans come together to give thanks for the bountiful harvest and celebrate their cultural heritage through dance, music, and storytelling.

Best Weather for a Rwanda Safari

January - february, march - may.

March marks the beginning of the rainy season in Rwanda. It a perfect time to watch the countryside morph into emerald shades and great great landscape photos. It is also a perfect bird-watching season; many colorful winged creatures fly through the countryside.

April is the wettest month in Rwanda, parks are quieter, and roads to the gorillas can be impassable. On the other hand, it's low season, perfect for for taking advanced of the discounted hotel and lodge rates.

May ends the first rainy season of the year with lesser downpours and incredible greenery in the countryside.

June - August

June marks the begining of the peak season because of its favourable dry weather, extending into August. It's the best time to visit Rwanda on vacation, and it attracts a high number of travelers to see gorillas in Rwanda. Gorilla trekking permits and lodges are in high demand during this time; book well in advance to avoid tiring logistics.

July is also excellent for gorilla trekking expeditions in the Virungas and wildlife game drives in Akagera. Its asier to spot lions and leopards during this time.

August is fantastic for game-viewing safaris in Akagera and chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest.

September - December

September usually marks the end of the dry season and the beginning of the last rainy season of the year. However, your visit to Rwanda may experience heavy downpours depending on when the rains arrive. September is not ideal for gorilla trekking in Rwanda. However, first-time visitors who brave the downpours will undoubtedly save on travel costs. Also, September is when the Kwita Izina, the gorilla naming festival happens, attracting thousands of travelers.

October is not a busy month for a safari in Rwanda. Holiday costs are reasonable, and it is a good time of year for specials on accommodation. Akagera National Park is still accessible at this time, but the rainfall can be a little unpredictable.

The heavy rains continue into November , turning Rwanda's rugged countryside into a vibrant green perfect for photography. The November rains hold back many travelers, so the low season extends into December.

December ends the wet season with relatively short rains paving the way for the peak season in January. It is a good time for bird-watching, with a wide variety of migratory birds making their way into the Albertine region.

Essential Rwanda Travel Information

The Kigali International Airport (KGL) serves as the primary international gateway to Rwanda, providing well-connected flights to various destinations. The country boasts a well-maintained road network, making it easy to navigate and explore different regions. Depending on your nationality, visa requirements vary, but many visitors can obtain an e-visa in advance. It is advisable to have travel insurance and check vaccination requirements before arriving. Rwanda has a reliable electricity supply, primarily using Type C and J plug sockets, so it's recommended to bring appropriate adapters. Taking necessary precautions, such as drinking bottled water and practicing good hygiene, will help ensure a healthy trip. Below, you can find more essential travel information for Rwanda.

Foreign tourists require visas to visit Rwanda. You can get a 30-day entry visa from the Irembo Immigration Website for USD 50. Check with your embassy or consulate for the latest regulations at least a month before your flight. Your passport must be valid for six months from the intended travel date and contain at least one blank page.

Health & Vaccines

Visitors to Rwanda are no longer required to take a Covid-19 test before boarding a flight. However, a yellow fever vaccination is mandatory, and Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are recommended. Malaria is a risk, so consult your doctor on antimalarial pill options. At the very least, sleep under a mosquito net at night and wear insect repellent during the day. Opt for bottled water instead of tap water to avoid Typhoid.

Food & Dining

Rwanda has a burgeoning culinary scene, with local and international restaurants well-represented nationwide. In addition to international offerings, try some of Rwanda’s traditional dishes; brochettes (grilled meat or fish on a stick), Akabenz (roasted and marinated pork), and Misuzu (fried sweet plantains) are delicious and available throughout the country. Tipping is unnecessary, mainly during your Rwanda vacation safari. However, if the service is exemplary, feel free to leave a few small notes.

The official currency is the Rwandan franc (Rwf) . Although larger hotels and tour operators may accept U.S. dollars and credit cards, expect to pay in francs at local shops and restaurants. You can withdraw the local currency at ATMs in large cities or exchange your U.S. dollars at the airport and regional banks, as will newer notes; US$ 50 and US$100 bills will fetch better exchange rates. Bills printed before 2005 may not be accepted.

Accommodation

The quality of travel accommodation in Rwanda has improved in leaps and bounds over the past several years. Expect good food ; excellent, personalized service ; and a few unique touches—like a hot water bottle under your sheets—from Rwanda’s best safari lodges . Bring travel necessities, such as toothbrushes and shampoo, but don’t be surprised if those items are already in your bathroom. Most accommodations will give you a room with mosquito bed nets. However, you may not require a net in properties at high altitudes.

Network & Wi-Fi

You can use complimentary Wi-Fi in Rwanda at most restaurants, cafés, and hotels. 4G LTE wireless broadband is in major cities and towns. Outside of Kigali, however, Wi-Fi connection is much more unreliable. If you need consistent Internet or phone access, hotspot your roaming network, or bring an unrestricted cell phone and get a SIM card on arrival. MTN and Tigo are considered the most consistent network providers.

Getting Around

Rwanda has a well-developed road network connecting major towns. The best way to get around is by car. Smaller roads may not be surfaced and could be affected by weather. Hire a local tour operator to arrange a car with a driver or rent a four-by-four car from an agency in the city if you prefer to drive yourself. Taxis and shared minibusses are available in larger towns, but Rwanda has no rail service.

Plastic Ban

When you travel to Rwanda, it's important to note that the law has banned plastic bags since 2008. Hence, any plastic bags in your luggage will be taken away at the airport or other entry points. During your Rwanda trip, you'll notice that locals prioritize protecting the environment and maintaining clean public places.

Rwanda tour reviews

Our Rwanda tour was an absolute dream come true. From the breathtaking landscapes to the warm and welcoming locals, every moment felt like an adventure. The highlight was the gorilla trekking experience – truly once-in-a-lifetime.

I had an amazing time exploring Rwanda. The tour was well-organized, and the accommodations were comfortable. The interactions with local communities left a lasting impact. My only suggestion would be to include more diverse dining options.

Rwanda exceeded all expectations. The tour guides were passionate and made sure every moment was special. The landscapes were stunning, and encountering gorillas in the wild was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm already planning my return!

The Rwanda tour provided a fantastic mix of wildlife encounters and cultural immersion. The guides were friendly and informative. The only downside was a minor delay in transportation, but it didn't significantly impact the overall experience.

I'm so glad I chose this tour in Rwanda. The itinerary was well-balanced, and the group size was perfect. Meeting the local communities and learning about their traditions was eye-opening. The guides' commitment to conservation was truly commendable.

Just like every other travel destination, planning is a very crucial stage of your expedition. The better yo plan, the more swift your vacation will be. Rwanda is an all year round tour and travel destination but visiting during certain months is recommended. Also, you have to know some vital information, rules and regulations, how to stay safe and how best you can enjoy your travel holiday.

Why travel to Rwanda?

The best reason to visit Rwanda should be mountain gorilla trekking . The country is famously known for gorillas and of course having the best conservation efforts regarding gorilla tourism in the world. If your primary reason for visiting is seeing the Big five game animals, Akagera National Park should be your preferred destination.

Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest is an experience like no other. The magical canopy walk experience should be a spice to your adventure. Lake Kivu has some of the finest beaches of Rwanda right at its shores. It is not only a perfect spot to relax and engage in multiple water sports but also the best destination for Rwanda honeymoons. For mountaineers, Rwanda has five of the 8 Virunga Volcanoes to challenge your physical fitness. The highest of all and hardest to climb is Mount Karisimbi.

Much as there isn’t so many reasons to visit Rwanda, you can definitely make the most of the few activities that are available.

When to go on a Rwanda travel holiday

It is best to visit during the dry months of the year. These include December to February and June to September. You can still visit outside these months only that rain fall can easily ruin your adventure if unlucky.

Is Rwanda safe?

Rwanda is a very safe place for tourists and expatriates. These two category of persons get to even enjoy certain benefits that even citizens do not. Tourists are hardly stopped along the way by traffic officers. The president highly respects tourists in all aspects.

Thanks for following on another busy day in Westminster.

We'll be back tomorrow, but until then, here's what you missed:

Join us from 6am for all the latest political news.

If you missed today's episode of Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips - don't fret!

You can watch the show in full - including interviews with Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron and Labour's Jonathan Ashworth - in the clip below...

In January 2023, Rishi Sunak made five promises.

Since then, he and his ministers have rarely missed an opportunity to list them. In case you haven't heard, he promised to:

• Halve inflation • Grow the economy • Reduce debt • Cut NHS waiting lists and times • Stop the boats

See below how he is doing on these goals:

An Israeli arms embargo is "not a wise path" and the UK and America are "in a totally different situation", the foreign secretary has said.

Lord Cameron told the Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips Show that it would be "extremely dangerous" for Israel to attempt a major offensive in Rafah.

But asked if the UK would follow in the US's footsteps and halt the supply of weapons to Israel if launches an attack on the southernmost city of Gaza - a crucial route for aid - he said the UK and American "are in a totally different situation".

"The United States is a massive bulk state supplier of weapons to Israel, including, you know, 1,000lb pound bombs and all the rest of it," he said.

"The UK provides less than 1% of Israel's weapons and is not a state supplier. We have a licensing system and those licences can be closed if it's judged there's a serious risk of a serious international human rights violation."

You can read more from Sky News below:

A total of 120 people crossed the Channel on three small boats yesterday, on what was the hottest day of the year so far.

This is a significant drop on 221 on Friday and 211 on Thursday.

Arrivals typically soar with the warmer weather, which is set to end at 1pm today when thunderstorms will sweep in across parts of Wales and western and central England.

The Met Office has warned: "Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

"Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life."

More than 9,000 people have arrived in the UK on small boats this year.

Following the defection of the Dover and Deal MP Natalie Elphicke to Labour, Beth, Ruth and Jess discuss the surprise move and whether it could have been handled differently by Sir Keir Starmer.

They also talk about Beth's interview with the former immigration minister Robert Jenrick and his warnings about Reform UK.

Plus, how significant was the defeat of former Conservative mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street? Beth and Jess were both there to tell the story.

And they answer a question on Labour and the Muslim vote, and what the party can do to restore confidence and trust.

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.

With the local elections complete, Labour is still sitting comfortably ahead, with the Tories trailing behind.

See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker  here .

Former chancellor and education secretary Nadhim Zahawi said he did not regret accusing journalists of smearing him when reports first emerged of HMRC's investigation into his tax affairs.

Asked by the BBC whether he regretted the comments, Mr Zahawi said: "No, because the smears were so wide - things like the National Crime Agency, which I've never ever had any dealings with or any investigations from."

The outgoing MP for Stratford-on-Avon said it was a "really tough choice" to stand down from parliament at the next election.

Mr Zahawi added: "The heart said keep going and the head said it's time to let a younger, more energetic person fight a pretty vital election for my party.

"It's a wonderful seat - best seat in parliament - and I think it's deserving of a young, energetic Conservative - the list will be as long as my arm."

By Darren McCaffrey, political correspondent

"If you don't stand for anything, then you fall for stuff like this."

That was Lord Cameron taking the opportunity on Sky News this morning to attack what he branded was Labour's "opportunism" over right-wing Dover MP Natalie Elphicke's defection this week.

Her defection has now become a real headache not for the Tories but for the Labour leadership and specifically the judgement of Sir Keir Starmer.

New allegations have emerged on Sunday, from the former justice secretary Robert Buckland, that Natalie Elphicke tried to influence a court case involving her ex-husband and predecessor in Dover, Charlie Elphicke.

Ms Elphicke has branded this as all nonsense and we have now ended up in a situation without a lack of substantial evidence of he said, she said.

And while Labour has a point in asking why Mr Buckland didn't raise this earlier, the bigger question remains: did the Labour leadership make the right call in allowing Ms Elphicke to defect?

While this specific allegation is new, Ms Elphicke was previously temporarily suspended from the Commons and told to apologise after using official Commons stationery to write to senior judges in pre-sentencing.

She was also forced to apologise for comments she made supporting her ex-husband in relation to some of the victims.

And all this aside, Ms Elphicke has spent years attacking Labour and Labour policies from the right - it is therefore not a surprise that many MPs are not best pleased.

Far from it, those on the left of Labour are increasingly vocal about their disdain for her and her inclusion in the parliamentary party.

Many point out that the Labour's broad church doesn't at the moment include Diane Abbott.

Criticism like this might only grow louder.

And so it all becomes very difficult for the Labour leader. Ultimately it was his call. Maybe it seemed too good a political win to ignore past concerns about Ms Elphicke.

But did Sir Keir properly weigh up the possible reaction inside his party, the damage it might do to the party's reputation and more importantly the questions he would raise about his judgement?

The UK economy is no longer in recession, according to official figures.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by a better-than-expected 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

Economists had predicted the figure would be 0.4%.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it showed the economy had "turned a corner".

He told Sky News's Ed Conway: "I am pleased that while there's more work to do, today's figures show that the economy now has real momentum, and I'm confident that with time, people will start to feel the benefits of that.

"We've had multiple months now where wages are rising, energy bills have fallen, mortgage rates are down and taxes are being cut... I'm pleased with the progress that we're making."

Mr Sunak added: "I am confident the economy is getting healthier every week."
