"We had a great time! My family and I enjoyed the great live music while we cruised down the bay and watched a beautiful sunset. Even though we live local we all felt like we were on vacation. Highly recommend - We are already looking forward to the next time! A+++"

"My family and I did the Steel Drum and Rum tour with Classic Boat Rides. It was the perfect Saturday activity with even more perfect weather. The crew was incredibly friendly and accommodating. I would recommend packing a cruise picnic lunch to personalize the experience."

"10 of us went on the Thursday night cruise as we wanted adults only and liked the live music. We had a blast and would highly recommend the cruise- drinks were reasonable, sights were gorgeous, and we had a blast being on the water together. We made friends on the boat too! Fantastic night!"

"Went on the three hour Sunday afternoon cruise up the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers. First time sailing with CBR – definitely won’t be the last. Captain Dan and his crew were great! Boat was very comfortable and the views were spectacular. Can’t wait to try their sunset cruise."

"Great boat ride. Highly recommend for anyone that loves boats and music. The crew are all wonderful. You get so much for the price, which is very reasonable. I do this every summer and they have so many cruise options. I can't wait to try another cruise. The steel band cruise looks great too!"

What to Do and See While Boating on Sandy Hook Bay and the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers in New Jersey: Your Guide

sandy hook boat tours

Through our Highlands Boating Club & Rentals location, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming hundreds of boating visitors to the beautiful Sandy Hook Bay area on our luxury boat rentals and top-notch Boating Club fleet boats. Our Boat Rental guests and Boating Club members, as well as other boating visitors, often look to us for suggestions on what to do during their visit, and we’re thrilled to help our guests plan their perfect day at the Jersey Shore!

Whether you’re looking for what to do with your family at the Jersey Shore, or planning a get together with friends, the Jersey Shore offers so much to do and see! Here are just a few of our suggestions on where to go and what to do during your boating experience with Bridge Marina in Highlands, whether you’re boating on Sandy Hook Bay, the Navesink River or the Shrewsbury River!

Looking to enjoy dock and dine?

Highlands offers a host of waterfront dining options. For local seafood and American fare, try the iconic Bahr’s Landing in Highlands for its indoor and outdoor waterfront seating and “famous” lobster options. Proving Ground Restaurant is another Highlands’ favorite, offering “casual chic” fare and beautiful views of Sandy Hook. Both options are minutes away from Bridge Marina, making either of them an ideal choice for a waterfront dining experience.

The Seafarer Bar with Local Smoke BBQ, located at Baker’s Marina on the Bay (where our Highlands Boat Club & Rentals is located), features live music on most weekends and casual fare in a fun atmosphere; our guests often enjoy winding down here after their day on the water.

When choosing a waterfront restaurant, please be mindful of the condition of any docks you approach, and use fenders, lines, and bumpers correctly. Make sure you are comfortable with docking the boat on your own. Finally, please note that reservations may be required at waterfront establishments; we suggest calling ahead, especially on weekends.

In the mood for a swim?

Our Highlands Boat Rental guests and Boat Club members alike enjoy the beauty of Veteran’s Cove on the Navesink River for swimming or simply anchoring and hanging out for the day. If you choose to spend your time here, please anchor safely, away from other boaters. Please note that “tying up” with other boats/boaters is strictly prohibited.

Cruising/Sight Seeing

A cruise up the Navesink River is perfect no matter what time of year; our Highlands boat rental and boating club members enjoy the beauty of this particular area! As you make your way up the Navesink River, boaters can admire the beauty of Hartshorne Woods. These forested hills were once fortified with a military coastal defense system. Now the park is known for its challenging hiking trials and beautiful vistas.

Also, check out the unique small summer bungalow colony of Barley Point in Rumson. Politicians and celebrities, including Governor Phil Murphy and Jon Bon Jovi, have made their homes on the Navesink; you can check out the abundance of sprawling estates from the water on the way to Red Bank. And don’t forget to bring your binoculars to see nesting Osprey and other interesting wildlife!

Other things to do in Highlands at the Jersey Shore

Highlands is a very walkable and bike friendly town, and our boating guests often enjoy spending time exploring the area before or after their boat trip with us!

The Henry Hudson trail, which begins in Highlands near Popamora Beach, is a scenic trail to explore by foot or bike, with gorgeous views of Sandy Hook Bay, as well as the NYC skyline. Bike or hike the trail to Atlantic Highlands, a quaint town with a small shopping district, dotted with Victorian homes that have been preserved and restored, adding to the charm of small-town living.

Sandy Hook National Recreation Area is a destination in and of itself, with miles of walking and biking trails to explore, as well as the historic Fort Hancock district, towering lighthouse and expansive beaches. And speaking of lighthouses, don’t miss the Twin Lights Historic site in Highlands, which offers a museum, exhibits and tours, and is highlighted as one of the best small museums in New Jersey. Please note that admission fees apply to both of these national and state park destinations, and reservations may be required.

Gateway National Recreation Area - Sandy Hook Canoe Cruise

Gateway National Recreation Area

Gateway National Recreation Area's Sandy Hook is a barrier beach at the northern end of the New Jersey Shore. Its location at the entrance to New York Harbor assured Sandy Hook's importance for coastal and harbor defense. For more than 200 years most of the peninsula has been a federal reserve. The military presence both shaped Sandy Hook's history and assured its preservation as open space. During the summer, visitors enjoy swimming and strolling along the Sandy Hook beaches. Throughout the year there are opportunities for birding, fishing, hiking, camping or discovering the park's natural resources and historic sites, including America's oldest lighthouse and historic coastal batteries. During the Sandy Hook Canoe Cruise, experienced park rangers will outfit visitors for an early morning canoe tour on the bay. Along the route to Skeleton Hill Island, paddlers will experience breathtaking views of Sandy Hook mainland and Sandy Hook Bay. Visitors will likely observe shore birds, fish, and possibly Diamondback terrapins while paddling. Once the group reaches Skeleton Hill Island, visitors will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the area. Atlantic Highlands, Sandy Hook, Raritan Bay Party Boat Fishing

Fishing from Atlantic Highlands and the Sandy Hook Area offers us the best of both worlds, The Ocean and the Bay!

sandy hook boat tours

Season starts in April fishing for Striped Bass.

Stripers are one of the most exciting fish out there. The average size is 24 to 48 inches or 5 to 40 pounds! Along with being the best looking fish and a good fighter, they also taste great.

We fish till Mid June then switch to Fluke fishing for the Summer months.

Fluke (or Summer Flounder) are bottom dwellers. We fish several areas for Fluke, depending on the time of season. The Bay, Ocean, Channels, nothing is out of our reach. The average size Fluke for our area run 14 to 30 inches,1 to 10 pounds. However, several fish each season are caught  between 10 and 14 pounds! Fluke are a challenge to catch, that’s what keeps customers coming back.

We finish up the season with our Fall Striper run. Normally from the last week in October through Christmas (weather permitting). Jigging or Bait Fishing between the channels, in the bay or down the beach, this is probably the most exciting time of year. Fish are migrating for the winter and are normally very hungry.............If you haven’t fished with us before, give us a try, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you! Capt. Ron Santee

The Lower New York Harbor, and Ambrose Channel to Sandy Hook and Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey Tour

August 6, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.

The Lower New York Harbor, and Ambrose Channel to Sandy Hook and Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey Tour Sunday, August 6th • 11am-2pm

FERRY DIRECTIONS: DO NOT GO TO THE NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM. The “Fast Ferry” pier is located on the water, by the 1 Bay Street general area which includes the St. George Ferry Terminal and the Empire Outlets. The “Fast Ferry” pier does not have its own address. Google Maps will take you to the general area to find parking either at the Empire Outlets or St. George Ferry Terminal. Please refer to our walking map to find the pier: https://lighthousemuseum.org/boat-tours/ The pier is located at the end of Wall Street behind the Ferry Hawks Stadium. You cannot park at the “Fast Ferry” pier, but you can drop people off at the end of Wall Street. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY TO PLAN FOR PARKING AND WALKING TO FAST FERRY. Call the National Lighthouse Museum prior to Boat Tour to ask for further explanation if need be.

Popularly regarded as NLM’s “Signature Tour” this exciting boat tour, familiarizes passengers with key lighthouses that facilitate safe passage from the Atlantic Ocean into Lower New York Harbor.

We explore a total of nine lighthouses: Battery Weed Light located atop Fort Wadsworth, the Coney Island Lighthouse, West Bank and Romer Shoals Lighthouses, the Sandy Hook Light, The Twin Lighthouses of Navesink at Atlantic Highlands, the Staten Island Rear Range at Richmond Hill, the New Dorp Light, and the Elm Tree Beacon at Miller Field, also located in New Dorp.

After sailing past historic Forts Wadsworth and Hamilton at the Narrows, we head under the Verrazano Bridge passing the former Quarantine stations of Hoffman and Swineburn Islands. Enroute to the Sandy Hook Light, situated near the tip of an eight mile spit at Fort Hancock, a coastal defense base that once guarded the approach of NY Harbor, we learn about the role that this proud and historic beacon has played on behalf of NYC’s maritime trade and its commerce over the centuries.

Cruising on the Ambrose Channel, Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsberry River we journey along the Atlantic Highlands past the towns of Keyport and Leonardo, home to Naval Weapons Station Earle and the world’s longest pier as well as Mount Mitchill, the highest point on the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Yucatan in Mexico. The Atlantic Highlands is home to one of the most spectaular lighthouses in America: the Navesink Twin Light Station, the very first structure in America witnessed by immigrants following an Atlantic crossing.

Upon our return along the Ambrose Channel into Lower New York Bay, we head near to the Coney Island Lighthouse at Norton’s Point in Seagate, Coney Island, where famed Keeper Frank Schubert, NYC’s last Light Keeper, resided for 40 years. We are also treated to a memorable image: the bright and powerful lens emanating from Staten Island’s Rear Range Light, located atop Richmond Hill.

*Combo Ticket Available: $75 for adults/$50 for children. Includes Boat Tour, National Lighthouse Museum admission and SI Ferry Hawks 4:00 pm Baseball Game.
