Places to Visit in Srinagar

Things to do in srinagar, srinagar 3 days itinerary.

Srinagar is a haven for tourists with beautiful gardens, historical forts, and culturally significant religious sites. Here is a list of my top picks of the places to visit in Srinagar:

Mughal Gardens

Srinagar is home to four Mughal gardens, which are Shalimar Bagh, Nishat garden, Chashma Shahi, and Pari Mahal. These gardens not only offer a glimpse into India’s rich history and culture but also provide a peaceful and serene environment for you to relax and unwind. Each garden is unique in its own way, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and gardens. We visited all four Mughal Gardens, and a couple of others as well. Let me share the specialties of them all, but before that here are some general information:

Here are some general information about the Mughal gardens in Srinagar that will help you plan your trip:

  • The gardens are open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.
  • Entry fee per adult is Rs. 24 and for children is Rs. 12.
  • The best times to visit the Mughal gardens in Srinagar are in April and in November. We visited in April, and we found the plants and shrubs in full bloom. Another great time to visit is in November, when autumn paints the leaves of the large chinar trees brilliant shades of yellow and orange.
  • You can take photos in Kashmiri attire in all of the Mughal gardens.

Shalimar Garden

Shalimar Garden is one of the most beautiful, and iconic Mughal gardens in Srinagar . The garden is located on the banks of Dal Lake and was built by Emperor Jahangir in 1619 for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. The garden is spread over 31 acres and is divided into three terraces, each with a unique theme and design.

A view of Shalimar Garden, a must visit Mughal garden in Srinagar, Kashmir.

One of the most unique features of Shalimar Garden is its water supply system. The garden is irrigated by a canal that runs through the center of the garden. The water flows through the canal and cascades down into the fountains and pools, creating a soothing and tranquil atmosphere.

While it is the largest and the most famous of Srinagar’s gardens, we felt that it was not the best maintained. We found some parts of it under renovation. When we checked with our driver-cum-guide, he told us that there is always some repair work at Shalimar Garden. Anyhow, since we visited in April, the garden was vibrant with colorful blooms. In spite of it being under renovation, we felt the tall flowering trees added a certain charm to it.

Nishat Garden

Nishat Garden, also known as the “ Garden of Joy ,” is one of the most beautiful Mughal gardens in Srinagar. It is located on the banks of Dal Lake and was built by Asif Khan, the brother-in-law of Emperor Jahangir, in 1633. The garden is spread over 47 acres and is known for its stunning landscapes, beautiful flowerbeds, and serene atmosphere.

We absolutely loved Nishat Garden! We found more flowerbeds in Nishat Garden than in Shalimar Garden. But if we were to compare blooming trees, Shalimar Garden beats it.

A flock of pigeons over Nishat Garden, a place to visit in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Chashma Shahi

Chashma Shahi is a beautiful Mughal Garden located on the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains in Srinagar. It was built in 1632 by Ali Mardan Khan, a Mughal governor of Kashmir during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. The garden is known for its natural spring, which is believed to have medicinal properties and is a major tourist attraction in Srinagar.

Chashma Shahi is one of the smallest Mughal gardens in Srinagar , but it is also one of the most serene and peaceful. The garden is spread over 1.5 acres and is divided into three terraces, each with a unique theme and design.

After we got in, we came to know that the park has a natural hot spring. The water here is thought to have medicinal and healing properties. We saw a lot of people filling water bottles with the spring water. We didn’t have any so we just drank some water directly from the spring. I would recommend you carry a water bottle while visiting Chashma Shahi.

Pari Mahal, which means the “Fairy Palace”, is a beautiful historical monument with gardens around it, in the typical Mugal style.

Here is something interesting I read about Pari Mahal . It was built by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in the 17th century. The primary purpose behind the construction of Pari Mahal was to serve as an observatory and a residence for Dara Shikoh.

Prince Dara Shikoh had a deep interest in astrology, Sufism, and various philosophical pursuits. Pari Mahal was designed to be a place where he could study astronomy and astrology. The location on the Zabarwan Range provided an elevated position with clear views of the sky, facilitating celestial observations.

Pari Mahal, a Mughal garden in Srinagar, Kashmir, is a major tourist attraction.

Pari Mahal is also known for its unique blend of Islamic and Buddhist architecture. The palace has several arched doorways and windows, which are adorned with intricate carvings and designs. Our driver told that there is a local say that Pari Mahal is haunted. While we did not find any ghosts or fairies, the monument did look spooky to us!

We could visit Pari Mahal only because we had an open itinerary and we were not part of any tour package. Most tour packages don’t take you there. But if you asked me, Pari Mahal is worth a visit. It is just 2.5 kilometers from Chashma Shahi and so you can demand your operator to take you anyhow.

Badamwari, also known as the Almond Garden , is a beautiful garden located in the heart of Srinagar. The garden is known for its stunning almond trees, which bloom during the spring season. In my opinion, Badamwari is the most beautiful garden in Srinagar !

Ashley in front of an almond tree in Badam Wari, Srinagar, Kashmir.

The Badamwari was built by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the 17th century and was originally used as a hunting ground for the royal family. The garden is spread over 37 acres of land and has over 2000 almond trees, which bloom in shades of pink and white during the spring season.

We had never heard of Badamwari before visiting Srinagar. When our driver suggested we visit it, we were not very excited as we had seen so many gardens in Srinagar already. But when we got there, we were complete mind-blown.

Ashley’s Tip: Badamwari is open only for a limited time of the year from late March to early May or only when the almond flowers are in bloom. Check the dates before planning your trip here.

Tulip Garden

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, also known as the Tulip Garden , is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in Srinagar. It is located at the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains and is spread over 30 hectares (74 acres) of land. We were absolutely thrilled to find this garden with multi-colored tulip bloom when we visited.

The Tulip Garden was inaugurated in 2007 and is the largest tulip garden in Asia . The garden was built to promote tourism in the region and to showcase the beauty of Kashmiri flowers. Tulip garden is open to the public in April every year, which is the prime blooming season for the tulips.

The garden is divided into several sections, each with a unique color scheme and design. The tulips are planted in different patterns and designs, giving you a mesmerizing sight. The garden has over 1.5 million tulips of different colors, including red, yellow, orange, pink, and white.

Hari Parbat

Hari Parbat is a hill located in the heart of Srinagar. It is an important historical and cultural landmark in the city and is a must-visit place for anyone interested in the history and culture of Kashmir. The hill is home to an ancient temple, a Gurudwara and other structures, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Dal Lake.

A view of Hari Parbat, a major tourist attraction in Srinagar, Kashmir.

The first fortification of Hari Parbat was started by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1590. He built an outer wall for the fort and a grand gate, called Kathi Darwaza. However, he could never complete the construction of a fort on Hari Parbat.

The construction of the Hari Parbat Fort, also known as Durrani Fort , took place in the 18th century under the rule of Atta Mohammad Khan, an Afghan governor. The fort is a testament to the historical military architecture of the time and has played a role in various periods of conflict and political changes in the region.

Apart from the historical and cultural significance of the hill, we also enjoyed the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Dal Lake from atop. We could also spot several walking trails and picnic spots on the hill. Visiting Hari Part involves a lot of walking and climbing stairs. I would suggest comfortable shoes, sunscreen, hats and plenty of water if you are planning to go up the hill.

Hazratbal Shrine

Hazratbal Shrine is one of the most famous religious landmarks in Srinagar. It is a revered shrine for Muslims and is known for its historical and religious significance. We found this beautiful white marble, dome-shaped shrine to bee one of the most serene monuments in Srinagar.

The shrine is home to a relic that is believed to be a hair from the beard of the Prophet Muhammad. The relic is displayed to the public on certain special occasions, and it is said to have miraculous powers. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful architecture, which combines traditional Islamic and Kashmiri styles.

Jamia Masjid

Jamia Masjid is another historic mosque we visited in the heart of Srinagar. The mosque is a stunning example of Islamic architecture and is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. Jamia masjid has a rich history and is an important religious and cultural center for Muslims in the region.

Jamia Masjid, a place to visit in Srinagar, Kashmir.

The mosque was built in 1394 CE by Sultan Sikandar Shah, the ruler of Kashmir at the time. The mosque has a spacious courtyard that can accommodate thousands of worshippers at a time. The architecture of the mosque is a blend of traditional Islamic and Kashmiri styles, with beautiful arches and ornate minarets.

Unlike the dome-structured mosques you will usually find, the architecture of Jamia Masjid is Persian-inspired and shows similarities to Buddhist pagodas. This makes Jamia masjid is a unique architectural marvel.

Apart from that, Jamia masjid is a great place for you to shop for clothes and footwear at cheap prices. The mosque is surrounded by a line of shops that sell clothing, footwear, and trinkets of reasonable quality. We bought Kashmiri embroidered clothing, carpets, and some local spices here at a throw away price. This is were the locals shop, so we were sure of the quality of the goods we bought.

Shankaracharya Temple

Shankaracharya Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located on the top of a hill in Srinagar. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the oldest and most important religious landmarks in the region.

Shankaracharya temple is named after the great philosopher and theologian Shankaracharya , who is believed to have visited the site during the 9th century CE. The temple has a rich history and is known for its stunning architecture and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Shankracharya Temple in Srinagar, is a must visit tourist attraction in Kashmir.

To reach the temple, we had to climb a steep flight of stairs that lead up to the top of the hill. The climb was challenging, but the stunning views and the peaceful surroundings make it all worth it. The temple is located at an altitude of 1100 feet above sea level and offers breathtaking views of Dal Lake and the surrounding mountains.

The architecture of the temple is a blend of traditional Kashmiri and Hindu styles. The temple has a circular base and a tall octagonal structure with a dome-shaped roof. The interior of the temple is decorated with beautiful carvings and intricate artwork, which adds to the charm and beauty of the shrine.

Ashley’s Tip: The road to Shankaracharya Temple is closed after 5:00 pm, so plan your trip accordingly.

Here is my suggestion on what to do in Srinagar:

Shikara Ride on Dal Lake

Shikara ride on Dal Lake is one of the most popular and enjoyable activities for tourists visiting Srinagar. The Dal Lake is a stunningly beautiful lake that is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lush greenery. The Shikara ride offers you a unique opportunity to explore the lake and experience the culture and beauty of Srinagar.

Shikara boats on Dal Lake, a must do activity in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Shikaras are traditional Kashmiri boats that are brightly colored and decorated. The boats are operated by local boatmen who are skilled in navigating the lake and know all the best spots to explore. The Shikara ride is a leisurely and relaxing experience that allows you to take in the breathtaking views of the lake and its surroundings.

A boat with flowers on Dal Lake viewed from Shikara boats on Dal Lake, Srinagar.

During the Shikara ride, your guide will show you the main viewpoints on the way, including the beautiful Char Chinar Island, which is home to four majestic Chinar trees . You can also visit the floating vegetable gardens and observe the local fishermen at work.

The Shikara ride is also a great way to experience the unique culture and traditions of Kashmir. While we were floating away slowly on Dal Lake, hawkers from the floating market approached us with their boats selling us souvenirs, saffron, and Kahwa tea. We didn’t buy anything as we felt it was all too pricy, but we had the best kahwa tea in Srinagar while on the shikara. You can also get your photo taken in the Kashmiri attire while riding on a shikara, but we did it in one of the Mughal gardens, so skipped that as well!

Ashley’s Tip: The Shikara ride is best enjoyed during the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is not too strong, and the weather is cool and pleasant. Be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as the sun can be strong during the day.

Houseboat Stay

A houseboat stay in Srinagar is a unique and unforgettable experience that should not be missed by anyone visiting the city. Houseboats are an iconic feature of Srinagar and offer you a chance to experience the culture and beauty of Srinagar in a unique way.

Houseboats in Srinagar are typically made of cedar wood and are designed with intricate carvings and artwork. The houseboats are anchored along the banks of the Dal Lake and offer you a tranquil and serene environment to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the lake and its surroundings.

Houseboats in Dal Lake

The houseboats in Srinagar are equipped with all the modern amenities to ensure that you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Each houseboat typically has one or more bedrooms, a living room, a dining area, and a fully equipped kitchen.

Ashley’s Tip: The houseboats in Srinagar come at varying levels of standards. You can get deluxe accommodation in a houseboat at around Rs.3000. The luxury houseboats can cost as high as Rs. 10000 per night.

Visit an Apple Orchard

Apple orchards are a must visit attraction in Srinagar. If you are visiting Srinagar in April, you will find the apple trees in full bloom. If you are visiting Srinagar in August -September, you will find apples hanging in bunches from the trees.

While you are in an orchard, you can eat as many apples from the trees as you can for FREE. If you want to buy them, you will get them for a throw away price. Since we visited in April, we could only see the apple flowers and no fruits. It was still a great experience.

Ashley in Apple orchard in Srinagar, a must visit attraction in Kashmir in April and October.

Relish Wazwan

One of the best experiences we had in Srinagar was relishing a platter of wazwan as a family. Wazwan is a traditional Kashmiri feast that is an integral part of the local culture and cuisine. The feast typically consists of a lavish spread of meat-based dishes, served with rice and a variety of side dishes. Wazwan is not just a meal, but a symbol of hospitality and generosity in Kashmiri culture.

The meat used in Wazwan is typically lamb, which is slow cooked over a wood fire until it is tender and succulent. The meat is then served with a variety of gravies and sauces, each with its unique flavor and aroma.

The main course of Wazwan typically includes dishes such as Rogan Josh, Gushtaba, Rista, and Tabak Maaz. Rogan Josh is a spicy lamb dish that is cooked in a tomato-based gravy. Gushtaba is a meatball dish that is made with ground lamb and is cooked in rich yogurt-based gravy. Rista is a lamb meatball dish that is served in fiery red chili gravy. Tabak Maaz is a dish made with fried lamb ribs that are cooked with a variety of spices.

Wazwan is not just a meal but a social event that brings people together. The feast is traditionally served on large copper plates called trami. Make sure you eat with your hands as is the tradition in Kashmiri cuisine. Check out the Best Restaurants in Srinagar to try authentic wazwan in Srinagar.

Ashley’s Tip: Wazwan comes in a very large plate. To give you an idea, a half plate/trami is more than enough for four people . Keep this in mind when you try this so that you don’t waste your money or the food. We were four adults and one toddler and a half Wazwan fed us all.

Sip a Cup of Kahwa Tea

If you are visiting Srinagar, you have to have Kahwa chai!

Kahwa tea is a traditional Kashmiri tea, a special blend of green tea leaves, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and other spices, along with almonds, walnuts, and saffron.

It is typically prepared in a special copper kettle called a “samovar.” The tea is brewed slowly over a low flame, allowing the flavors and aroma of the spices to infuse into the water and served hot.

Kahwa tea is a must-try, famous herbal tea in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Kahwa tea is not only delicious but also has several health benefits. The green tea leaves are rich in antioxidants, which help to boost the immune system and protect the body against disease. The saffron and other spices in the tea have anti-inflammatory properties and are believed to aid digestion and improve overall health.

Shopping in Srinagar

Shopping in Srinagar is an exquisite experience that you must have on your trip to Kashmir. But before I get into the details, let me share a challenge we faced that you must be wary of. Whether you hire a taxi on your own or you are there on a packaged tour, you will be taken to the shopping emporium from where your taxi driver gets his commission. So, unless you are traveling on your own, you cannot go explore the shops you like.

A rack of Kashmiri carpets in a shop in Srinagar, Kashmir.

If you want to buy authentic pashmina shawls, silk, or premium quality carpets, go to emporiums with long legacy. But if you are not particular about buying premium stuff, here’s what you can do to get good quality stuff at reasonable prices. We are budget shoppers. Here is how we navigated the whole situation and got out Kashmiri stuff at reasonable prices.

  • Go shopping at the places your driver takes you to (as you really don’t have a choice sometimes) and bargain really hard.
  • Don’t buy stuff from the first shop your driver takes you too. That will be the expensive kind. After spending some time in the shop come out looking disappointed and complain to your driver that it was pricy.
  • Your driver will now take you to a cheaper place.
  • If you want to get quality stuff at a more cheaper rate, shop at the stores surrounding Jamia masjid. Your driver will not take you to any particular shop or shopping street that you ask them to as they may not get commission from there, however, they will take you to Jamia masjid anyway. This is where the locals shop, so you can be sure of the quality too.

Paper mache handicrafts is one of the things to buy in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Nishat Garden: If you are running out of time and weighing in leaving out one of the Mughal Gardens, then I would suggest Nishat Gardens.

Plan Your Trip to Srinagar in Kashmir with this Travel Guide

Land of Lakes and Gardens

srinagar me tourist places

Ng Hock How/Getty Images

Srinagar, in the Kashmir Valley in far northern India, is one of the top 10 hill station in India. A place of splendid natural beauty, it's often referred to as the "Land of Lakes and Gardens" or the "Switzerland of India". The gardens have a distinctly Mughal influence, as many of them were cultivated by Mughal emperors. Although civil unrest is an ongoing concern in the area due to conflict with nearby Pakistan, calm has been restored and visitors are returning to the area. (Read more about how safe is Kashmir now for tourists? ). Nevertheless, be prepared to see army personnel and police everywhere. Find out important information and travel tips in this Srinagar travel guide.

Getting There

Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam airport was completed in 2009 and is owned by the Indian Air Force. It can be reached most easily by flight from Delhi . There are also flights from Jammu, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Lucknow.

The Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation operates an inexpensive bus service from the airport to the Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. Otherwise, expect to pay about 1,000 rupees for a prepaid taxi (2018 prices). App-based taxi services such as Uber and Ola don't operate in Kashmir.

If you're traveling on a budget and are feeling adventurous, you may try taking an Indian Railways train to Jammu (these trains start from Delhi or pass through Delhi from other cities in India), and then go by shared jeep/taxi to Srinagar (traveling time around eight hours). Buses also run but they are much slower, taking around 11-12 hours for the journey.

A rail project is currently underway to link the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, but it's well behind schedule and isn't expected to be completed until after 2020. Tunnels are also being built to cut the travel time from Jammu to Srinagar by around five hours.

Visas and Security

Foreigners (including OCI cardholders) are required to register upon arriving and departing from the airport. It's a straightforward process that requires the completion of one form and only takes about five minutes. Do note that US government employees and government contractors who have security clearance are not permitted to visit Srinagar, as Kashmir is off-limits. Traveling to Kashmir could result in loss of security clearance.

The kind of experience you want to have in Srinagar will determine the best time of year to visit. It gets very cold and snows from December to February, and it's possible to go snow skiing in surrounding areas. If you want to enjoy the lakes and gardens, visiting between April to October is recommended. April to June is the high season. The monsoon usually arrives by mid July. September to October is also a good time to visit, and is not so busy. Foliage turns lovely deep, warm colors in late October, as the weather becomes colder. Temperatures get quite hot during the day in summer, but are chilly at night. Make sure you bring a jacket!

What to See and Do

Check out these top Srinagar attractions and places to visit. Srinagar is most well known for its houseboats, a legacy of the British that has rapidly multiplied. Don't miss staying on one!

Tips for Staying on a Houseboat

Avoid booking houseboats from tour operators in Delhi. There are plenty of scams and you never know what kind of boat you'll end up with! Reputable houseboats can be booked at Srinagar airport, and many have websites as well. Have a read of these tips for choosing the best Srinagar houseboat to find out what you should consider.

Where Else to Stay

The main commercial and tourist district, where most of the accommodations are situated, is Lal Chowk in the heart of Srinagar. It's located within close walking distance of local markets and the Jhelum River. Walking time to Dal Lake from Lal Chowk is about 30 minutes.

If you prefer to stay closer to Dal Lake, you'll find plenty of budget hotels to choose from along Boulevard Road, which runs along beside the lake. Hotel JH Bazaz and Blooming Dale Hotel Cottages offer good value for money in the Dal Gate area next to Dal Lake. Swiss Hotel Kashmir , located just off the Boulevard, is a popular budget choice -- and here's a pleasant surprise, foreigners pay reduced rates (usually, foreigners are charged more in India)! Hotel Dar-Es-Salam is a popular boutique hotel that overlooks the lake

Otherwise, if money is no object, the best luxury hotels are the Lalit Grand Palace and the Vivanta Dal View .

Hospitality Home is the most popular homestay in Srinagar and it's also inexpensive.

The annual Tulip Festival takes place during the first couple of weeks of April. It's the highlight of the year in Srinagar. In addition to being able to see millions of blooming tulips in the biggest tulip garden in Asia, cultural events are held.

Indian tourists often prefer to conduct their trip on an auspicious note, with a visit to Vaishno Devi shrine. It's best reached by helicopter from Katra, about an hour and a half from Jammu. Otherwise, these  popular tourist places in Kashmir can be visited on day trips (or longer side trips) from Srinagar.

Travel Tips

If you have a cell phone with a prepaid connection, your SIM card will not work as roaming has been blocked in Kashmir due to security reasons (postpaid connections are fine). Your hotel or houseboat may provide you with a local SIM card to use.

Note that being a predominantly Muslim area, alcohol isn't served in restaurants and most businesses shut for prayer at lunchtime on Friday in Srinagar. Bars can be found in select upmarket hotels though.

If you're flying out of Srinagar airport, do get there with plenty of time to spare (at least three hours before departure), as there are lengthy and multiple security checks. There aren't any restrictions on cabin luggage when flying into the airport. However, when departing, airlines often won't allow cabin luggage except for laptops, cameras and ladies handbags.

If you go to Gulmarg, you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle by booking gondola tickets online or in advance at the Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. You'll face huge lines at the gondola otherwise. In addition, avoid visiting Pahalgam during July as it will be extremely busy with pilgrims going on the Amarnath Yatra .

Do be aware that you should dress conservatively to respect the local Muslim culture.

Beyond the bustling markets and famous landmarks, lies a realm of serenity and mystery, where time seems to stand still. These hidden places in Srinagar offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history, natural wonders, and cultural heritage. From secluded gardens blooming with vibrant flowers to tranquil lakes shrouded in mist, each corner holds a secret waiting to be discovered by the intrepid traveler. Embark on a journey of enchantment as we unveil the lesser-known gems that make Srinagar a true haven for those seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures.

How To Get To Srinagar

Srinagar boats

There are two ways to get to Srinagar from Delhi via road. Those are Delhi-Manali-Leh and Delhi-Jammu-Srinagar. The first passage is open only 3-4 months in the year, while the second is open throughout the year. You can also take a train from Delhi to Jammu and then from Jammu to Srinagar but the most hassle-free option is to just get a flight from Delhi to Srinagar.

Just note that if you’re traveling by road, make sure the passage you’re taking is open. Once, I took a trip to Kashmir in May even the people at the bus station in Delhi didn’t have that information. We decided to take the advice of an old man from Manali that we met at the bus station who claimed that the passage was but when we reached Manali, we found out that the passage was closed due to the unexpected snow. So, being left without other options, we bought another ticket from Manali to Jammu and traveled for 14 hours starting from Delhi to Manali and 16 hours from Manali to Jammu.

Where To Stay In Srinagar?

Dal Lake Travel to Srinagar

I’ve stayed in different kinds of accommodation from luxurious hotels to cheap boathouses. The first time I visited, I stayed in the cheapest boathouses we could find. We only paid 200 INR per night ($3.5 USD). It wasn’t the best accommodation, but it had everything we need. We were making instant jokes about how we might wake up in the water because the floor was screeching every time you’d set a foot on it. Luckily, that didn’t happen. But whatever you choose, you can use our Booking affiliate link and get up to 15% off on all properties in Srinagar.

Best Tours To Take In Srinagar

Tours are a great way to explore the city and support local tourism companies who despite the natural beauties of the region have been struggling because the region doesn’t get a lot of visitors because of the political turmoil between India and Pakistan . I’ve taken many tours in Srinagar and here are some of my favorite choices.

If you’re looking for a tour that covers most of Srinagar’s highlights, the Srinagar Splendors tours is a great choice but if you’re looking to explore the city for the whole day, this tour shows you not only the highlights of Srinagar and the beauty of its lakes but also the finest dining options in town.

Alternatively, this tour is a great choice for people who want to get an in-depth tour of Srinagar’s old town.

If you’re looking for some nice day trip ideas from Srinagar, I warmly recommend this Gulmarg excursion – it’s one of the most beautiful places in the region and the tour also gives you a taste of traditional Kashmiri food.

Sonamarg is another great day trip ideas and the guides on this tour were just amazing.

Last but not least, if you’re looking for some longer tours that take care of your accommodation, food, transportation, and activities (so you don’t have to plan a thing), I recommend this private 6-day tour of Kashmir and this 15-day Sringar-Leh tour .

What’s Life Like In Srinagar?

dal lake

The tale of Kashmir always begins with a cold breeze that smacks you in the face as soon as you reach Srinagar. After that, this breeze becomes your faithful companion throughout your trip. Srinagar, the home of the Dal lake is an amazing city that looks like a winter version of Venice and as such has a lot of fascinating tourism sights. At this lake, you will find one of the biggest floating markets in India where you can buy literally everything, including hash and weed, if you’re into this stuff.

However, one can’t help but notice the deep trails that the political situation left on the people of Kashmir . The roads are awful, electricity and water breakdowns are common, the Internet is almost not existent, and home-made jugaads are omnipresent. Being in such a difficult situation, the Indian Government is afraid to invest in the region, because of the fear of separation. On the other hand, people don’t trust the Government and don’t feel like they are part of India , and their animosity towards the Government grows. That’s what I call the vicious circle of Kashmir…

These are the top 10 destinations for Labor Day travel

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: August 19, 2024 / 3:56 PM EDT / CBS News

A popular U.S. destination for Labor Day travel is becoming even more desirable as an end-of-summer season vacation spot.

Seattle is the nation's top Labor Day weekend destination, according to AAA booking data, which found that the city jumped 30% in popularity this year for domestic travelers after also topping the list in 2023.

Overall domestic travel is up by 9%, according to AAA booking data, while the cost of taking trips within the U.S. is down 2%.

Americans traveling by car can expect to see savings on gas costs. The typical cost for gasoline now stands at about $3.50 a gallon, compared to the national average of $3.81 over Labor Day weekend a year ago. Overall demand for gas is down, driven in part by the pandemic enabling remote work, which has changed driving habits.

Fewer Americans are planning to travel internationally over Labor Day weekend this year compared to 2023, according to AAA data. While the cost of domestic trips are down slightly, the cost of international travel has jumped 11%, according to AAA.

As far as international destinations, countries in Europe are the most popular vacation spots for American travelers. Eight of the top ten international destinations booked through AAA are European cities.

What is the best time to travel on Labor Day?

Airports and roads will start to get busy beginning on Thursday, Aug. 29, ahead of the Labor Day weekend. Roads are expected to be most congested in the afternoon and early evening on Thursday and Friday, according to Inrix, which provides transportation insights and data.

If you're traveling on Thursday or Friday, aim to hit the road in the morning to avoid traffic jams, experts say. If you aren't taking off until Saturday, it's best to wait until the afternoon to depart.

"Drivers should expect the most severe traffic jams before the holiday weekend as commuters mix with travelers," Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at Inrix, said in a statement. "Monitoring traffic apps, local news stations, and 511 traveler information services may help drivers navigate around congestion and reduce driver frustration this Labor Day."

Traffic is expected to be heaviest in the afternoon on Sunday and on Labor Day, Monday, September 2.

7 Last-Minute Escapes for Labor Day Weekend

If you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places in North America that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

A cityscape of buildings and narrow streets that leads to a tall tower on a hill. Behind it is a large bay with small islands and boats.

By Shannon Sims

It might sound like an impossible request: a last-minute Labor Day getaway with gorgeous weather and minimal crowds that you can squeeze into a long weekend. There are good reasons many destinations across North America won’t fit the bill. Wildfires are burning in some parts of the West, tropical disturbances are brewing in the Caribbean, the East Coast’s coastal retreats are packed, and much of the South is sweaty and oh so steamy. But if you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

Here are seven inspirations in North America for a Labor Day getaway.

North Carolina

Hike to magical waterfalls

Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Asheville, N.C., and covering 500,000-plus acres, Pisgah National Forest is a magical place to be immersed in nature. American goldfinches and Carolina chickadees sing high above waterfalls framed by lush green trees, and babbling streams pour down moss-covered rocks hiding salamanders, newts and crayfish.

During the summer, these wooded areas are chock-full of children at summer camp, and the trails are often busy with hikers. But by Labor Day, most of the kids have returned home, while the weather is often perfect, with average temperatures in the seventies. You have your pick of activities — bird-watching, fly fishing, waterfall dousing and hiking.

Easy trails can be found at the North Carolina Arboretum , but for a shaded, moderate hike to a waterfall in which you can douse, check out Catawba Falls Trail . For another moderate hike (but no swimming), there is Linville Gorge and Falls , nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. Advanced hikers can summit the 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell , the highest peak in the Eastern United States, in Mount Mitchell State Park, which is surrounded by Pisgah Forest.

Later, make your way back to Asheville , where a robust restaurant and brewery scene offers a perfect setting for sharing stories of your day. Local favorites include Cúrate for upscale tapas, Chai Pani for Indian food and Wicked Weed Brewing for hoppy deliciousness.

See San Francisco’s best-loved sights

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” may be a clichéd phrase, but anyone who has visited this California city during the summer most likely experienced fog, dank air and brisk wind. But September and October are San Francisco’s warmest and brightest months of the year.

A long weekend is just enough for first timers to sample the city’s best-known attractions. Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge . Board a cable car as it clangs up and down the city’s hills. Explore Alcatraz Island on a three-hour tour (book ahead). Take in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, which may be less chaotic with many children back in school. Watch a home game of the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park , right on the bay. Or check out the Presidio Tunnel Tops , a newly developed stretch of national park land featuring stunning panoramic views.

The city is a particularly special destination for those interested in L.G.B.T.Q. history. The GLBT Historical Society Museum , nicknamed the Queer Smithsonian, is a good place to start, as is a stroll through the Castro neighborhood or a stop at the Castro’s first gay bar, opened in 1963 as the Missouri Mule (now called Beaux).

Swim, fish, boat, then sip, at the Finger Lakes

One of the largest Finger Lakes in upstate New York, Keuka Lake stretches about 20 miles and draws visitors with clear-water swimming, paddling, kayaking and fishing. Labor Day marks the end of its high summer season.

Visitors can use picnic tables, playgrounds and swimming areas off sandy beaches at Keuka Lake State Park near Branchport or Red Jacket Park in the village of Penn Yan, on the lake’s northern end.

On its southern shores, the charming village of Hammondsport has cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which are clustered around the Pulteney Square Historic District .

Fishing is a big draw, with brown trout, yellow perch and more inhabiting the lake’s deep waters. You can buy your own fishing equipment at Jake’s Boat Livery , or get the professionals to do it by chartering a fishing expedition through Summit to Stream Adventures .

Don’t forget the wine: 20 vineyards are scattered around the lakeshore, with six part of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail . You can visit most wineries on your own or with a tour.

Keuka Lake is a one- to two-hour drive from airports in Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse or Buffalo. The lake is about a five-hour drive from New York City.

Soak your stress away in alpine splendor

During Labor Day weekend, the I-70 corridor that connects Denver to the ski towns to the west, like Winter Park, Keystone and Breckenridge, can be bumper to bumper, especially getting back on Monday.

But nestled in the San Juan Mountains, about an hour’s drive from Telluride, is Ouray, an often overlooked gem for outdoor fun. Sure, there’s great hiking and canyoning, but there aren’t many towns where you can stroll down Main Street and stop into a boutique for shopping, a cafe for coffee and a hot springs for soaking. Ouray Hot Springs Pool is sulfur-free — in other words, no rotten-egg stink — and offers not just one pool but many: The family-friendly pools feature water slides, a volleyball net and a rolling log, while the adults-only soaking section is kept between 102 and 106 degrees.

Montrose Regional Airport , about an hour’s drive from Ouray, has direct flights to Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver.

Sample delicious urban delights

You won’t scratch the surface of what Mexico City offers in a long weekend, so consider tossing away those checklists and instead soak up the atmosphere in one or two neighborhoods.

Start by signing up for the city’s bike share app, Ecobici , for an easy way to get around town. The Roma neighborhood, a favorite among travelers, has shaded, walkable streets; inviting plazas; and some of the city’s best restaurants. For a neighborhood with a tad fewer tourists, try La Condesa , a short bike ride from Roma and between the two lovely green spaces called Bosque de Chapultepec and Parque México . Shopaholics should visit Polanco , where the commercial thoroughfare Presidente Masaryk Avenue offers luxury stores.

Whichever neighborhood you pick to explore, you’ll be delighted by the quality and flavors of food offered at the city’s restaurants, food carts and 11,000-plus taco shops. Even if a corner spot looks shabby, it might be producing food that could rank among the best bites you’ve ever had. Look no further than Taquería El Califa de León, an unassuming taco stand that won a Michelin star this year , as an example of the culinary magic that lies around any given corner.

Nova Scotia

Time-travel in a 1700s fishing village

About 62 miles southwest of downtown Halifax along Nova Scotia’s South Shore, breezy Lunenburg is a fishing village with charm — and fresh seafood — to spare.

Old Town Lunenburg is considered by UNESCO as the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Its colorful homes face tall ships moored in the harbor, transporting visitors back to the 1700s. Stroll around the area on your own, popping into local shops and restaurants, or sign up for a walking tour .

At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic , part of the Nova Scotia Museum , you can experience what life was like in a fishing village throughout the centuries, from early Mi’kmaq communities to the arrival of Black Loyalists in 1783 to today. The museum is housed in an old fish processing plant, and the Old Fish Factory Restaurant now serves Nova Scotia lobster rolls on a wharf-side patio.

Fresh lobster is available year-round in Nova Scotia, so check out some stops on the Nova Scotia Lobster Trail . But don’t forget much of the Atlantic’s bounty: mussels, scallops, halibut, Arctic char, cod — even a seaweed called dulse — can be found on local menus.

Roam and ride in the sand dunes

The Great Lakes were made for summer, but the challenge is finding a spot that isn’t too crowded. Silver Lake Sand Dunes is a destination even many Michiganders don’t know about.

Located an hour-and-a-half drive from Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, the dunes comprise 2,000 acres and are part of Silver Lake State Park. Even though they are situated in the heart of the United States, the dunes will make you feel as if you’re roaming the sands of Arabia.

Activities at the park include swimming, canoeing and horseback riding along the beach, or hiking through the surrounding evergreen forests.

But a classic way to explore the dunes is through Mac Wood’s Dune Rides , a local company that for nearly a century has been taking visitors in open-top trucks for thrilling and informative rides through the sand.

While in the area, be sure to visit the Little Sable Point Lighthouse , an 1874 tower that was made more accessible to the public in 2010. Climb the tower and take in the lake, forests and dunes below.

An earlier version of this story included a photo caption that misstated the location of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. It is in Centro district, not Polanco. It also misstated the location of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The dunes are on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, not western.
