Factory visit by vloggers Matt Fryer and Danny Maude
In late May, our factory was visited by vloggers Matt Fryer and Danny Maude. Matt and Danny are hugely popular on social media and have a combined YouTube subscriber following of 700,000. Both are PGA Professionals and were absolutely fascinated to learn the history of our brands and the craftmanship and processes used to build the only authentic hickory clubs made in the world today. They then took the clubs and balls to Scotscraig Golf Club to test them out on the course.
Factory Visit by Discovery Channel
The Discovery Channel recently visited our St Andrews factory to learn how we are continuing the tradition to handcraft hickory golf clubs. We showed them step-by-step how to handcraft our wooden head 'Stag' hickory putter, and we used our simulation golf centre to compare the driving distance of a 150-year-old Long Nose club to a 100-year-old Brassie club and today's latest Modern Drivers. They were astonished at the results.

Golf Course of the Season
Western gailes - 2023.
One of Scotland's finest and toughest links courses, Western Gailes never fails to deliver. With such majestic neighbours as Royal Troon, Prestwick and Dundonald, not to mention the Ailsa Turnberry Course slightly further down the coast, it would be easy for this scintillating course to be overshadowed, but it's 7,000 yards of undulating fairways are a delight to play and it is no surprise that it regularly featured as a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship when the event has been held in Ayrshire.Expect sand dunes, ferocious winds, thick gorse and narrow fairways with natural bowl-shaped greens where you'll be rewarded for good golf but equally punished for any mistakes you make!!Inside the impressive clubhouse, you will find a warm welcome from members and some fine hospitality, including a complimentary lunch with your green fees. The wood-panelled décor gives a real feel for the history of the club, of which its membership is rightfully proud and there's much evidence of the club's historic events marked on its walls.

The Old Course, St Andrews
The Old Course at St Andrews, the birthplace of golf, boasts a six-century legacy sculpted by nature rather than an architect’s design. Starting and ending in the heart of town, it’s famed for expansive double greens and shared fairways, alongside 112 imposing bunkers. The 17th hole, known as golf’s toughest par 4, requires a tee shot over part of a famous hotel. The Road Hole bunker and road itself await errant shots. A must-visit on every golfer’s list, it’s hosted The Open Championship 30 times, most recently the 150th anniversary in July 2022, when Cameron Smith claimed the title.

Designed by David McLay Kidd and opened to the public in the summer of 2008, the Castle Course is the newest addition to the St Andrews portfolio. Situated on the east side of the town, the course offers spectacular views of the famous old town of St Andrews, St Andrews Bay and over towards Carnoustie. The course takes its name from Kinkell Castle, which, five hundred years ago, stood on a headland two miles southeast of the town centre where the new layout begins. The Castle Course offers golfers an excellent alternative to playing the older, more traditional courses when visiting St Andrews.
Electric Buggies: Medical certificate required and caddy to drive.
Practice Facilities: Driving range, short game area and putting green.
Dress Code: Appropriate golf attire.
Eight miles south of St Andrews lies Kingsbarns, possibly the last true links to be developed in Scotland. In fact, Kingsbarns’ golf origins go back some 200 years when it was home to a nine-hole course and golf club. The new revival is heralded as a truly spectacular and worthy addition to the legendary St Andrews portfolio. Embracing the sea as it does, the layout is superb with each hole offering a great sea view, and seven of them actually playing over or alongside the sea. The course design provides great variety and presents a stiff golfing challenge balanced by generous greens and wide fairways.
Electric Buggies: One available. Medical certificate required.
Dress Code: Smart casual golf wear. No caps in lounge.
Formed in 1786, the Crail Golfing Society is the 7th oldest Golf Club in the world and consists of two courses, the Balcomie and the Craighead. Situated only 11 miles from St Andrews, these true links style courses are extremely popular with both locals and tourists. The Balcomie was laid out by Tom Morris in 1895, but was played on many years before. Set on a magnificent coastline this challenging course is highly regarded for its testing holes, standard of greens and breathtaking scenery; watch out for the fifth, described by Sam Torrance as the hardest par four in Scotland.
Electric Buggies: Four available.
Dress Code: Smart golfing attire. No denims and shorts must be tailored.
Just over 10 miles south of St Andrews lies Elie Golf Course. This is one of Scotland’s most delightful courses, with panoramic views over the Firth of Forth and a finish akin to St Andrews Old Course as the closing two holes take you back into the middle of the town. The course is steeped in history and dates back to 1589, when a royal charter was passed granting the villagers official permission to play over the links. James Braid, 5-times winner of the Open who was born in nearby Earlsferry, described the 13th hole at Elie as ‘the best hole in golf’.
Electric Buggies: One available.
Practice Facilities: Driving range and putting green.
Dress Code: No denim. Knee length socks must be worn with shorts. No mobile phones are permitted. Members Lounge - Jacket & tie.
Dumbarnie Links is located 11 miles directly south of St Andrews on the Fife coast with a mile and half sea frontage overlooking the Firth of Forth. This Clive Clark design golf course has a unique topography that climbs from the water’s edge to a high point of 80 feet above sea level. The extensive 345-acre site at Dumbarnie has dual elevations, which are connected by a flowing escarpment and have provided the opportunity to create a number of elevated tees where holes play directly towards panoramic views of the sea.
Electric Buggies
Lundin Links is a very picturesque yet challenging golf course located on the east coast of the Kingdom of Fife, with stunning views out across the Firth of Forth to North Berwick, Gullane, Longniddry and Edinburgh. Originally laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1868, the course was extensively redesigned by James Braid in 1909 and is regularly used as an Open Qualifying Venue when the tournament is held at nearby St Andrews. The fine links fairways, excellent greens, open burns and strategic bunkering make this course well worth a visit.
Practice Facilities: Putting green.
Dress Code: No denims or collarless shirts. No hats or golf shoes in the clubhouse.
Situated on a renowned stretch of links between Monifieth and the world famous Carnoustie, Panmure Golf Club has been used as a venue for qualifying for The Open. The club was founded in 1845, but moved to its current site in 1899; several holes on the course were altered in 1922 on the advice of the legendary James Braid. Ben Hogan practised here for the 1953 Open at Carnoustie, which he won by four shots. The course features his favourite hole, the dogleg 6th, which heralds the toughest stretch around the turn.
Practice Facilities: Practice area and putting green.
Dress Code: No denims or trainers. No golf shoes, caps or hats in clubhouse.
While celebrated as one of the great venues in championship golf, Carnoustie must also be regarded as one of the most demanding. This is a tough golf course that few have tamed and it is often described as Scotland’s ultimate golfing challenge. Carnoustie is truly a great test for the able golfer and it is neither for the novice nor the faint hearted, although everyone who loves and enjoys the game will marvel at its intricacies. It is simply a ‘must’ for the avid player; as Hogan said, ‘No player’s experience can be complete without playing Carnoustie’. Fashioned by Old Tom Morris in 1857, and extended by James Braid in 1926, Carnoustie has played host to several Open Championships.
Electric Buggies: One available. Medical certificate required and caddy must drive.
Practice Facilities: Seven golf simulators for warming up and a putting green.
The New Course, St Andrews
Designed by Old Tom Morris and opened in 1895, this is hardly a ‘new’ course! It is, in fact, a classic links course and a first-class golfing challenge. With the traditional out and backlayout, the New is characterised by well-designed greenside and fairway bunkers, and tough homeward holes. Although overshadowed by its illustrious neighbour, the New Course is a must play for any golfer visiting the town of St Andrews.
Electric Buggies: Medical certificate required or over 65 years of age. Only 2 buggies available.
Practice Facilities: Driving range 1 mile from the 1st tee, putting green.
Originally opened on Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and designed for ladies and children, the Jubilee Course underwent a re-design by Donald Steel in 1988 and is now reputed to be the toughest of the St Andrews championship links. Created on a narrow strip of land between the sea and the New Course, the raised tees provide great views but also expose golfers to prevalent winds, which sweep in from the bay. Any golfer visiting St Andrews should play at least one round of golf on the challenging Jubilee Course.

Best accommodation for golf at St Andrews
Ann Mabry, Managing Director
St Andrews has several amazing accommodations but one of my favorites has to be the Ruscaks St Andrews Hotel which overlooks the infamous Old Course. The 18 at Rusacks is found on the rooftop of the hotel as well as two other restaurants.
You also cannot beat the views or location at the Rufflets Hotel. Everywhere you look is breathtaking and it truly feels like you are in your own little village, including a 5-minute stroll to the coast.
St Andrews Golf Courses
The Old Course
The iconic Old Course at St Andrews is the most famous and alluring for golfers worldwide, hosting 30 Open Championships. Highlights include the road hole, Swilcan Bridge, and the Valley of Sin.
Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895, the ‘New’ Course offers a challenging layout with undulating fairways and narrow tee shots. Despite its name, it complements the Old Course with a more demanding play.
Jubilee Course
Opened in 1897 for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the Jubilee Course is the most challenging at St Andrews. Its coastal holes and prevailing winds offer stunning views and a rigorous golfing test.
Castle Course
The Castle Course, opened in 2008, offers stunning cliffside views south of St Andrews. Its elevated position provides a unique contrast to the traditional links courses, creating a memorable golfing experience.
Eden Course
Designed by Harry Colt, the Eden Course opened in 1914. Known for its natural boundaries and severe bunkering, it offers a forgiving and enjoyable experience for mid to high handicappers.
Strathtyrum Course
Opened in 1993, the Strathtyrum Course is perfect for new players and high handicappers, yet still challenging for all. Its shorter length makes it an excellent introductory round in St Andrews.
Balgove Course
A 9-hole, par 30 course ideal for beginners, families, and sharpening short game skills. With no bunkers and minimal water hazards, it offers a fun and accessible round.
“I could take out of my life everything except my experiences at St Andrews and I would still have a rich, full life.” Bobby Jones
Iconic golf courses near St Andrews
With an 18 month waiting list for reserved tee times at the Old Course, those looking to book a St Andrews golf vacation may want to consider playing on some of Scotland’s other iconic courses, when visiting the famous town.
Due to the Old Course being built on common land with public access, anyone has the opportunity to take a walk on the famous greens without a tee time. Why not play other great courses on Scotland’s east coast, and still enjoy the atmosphere and history of the Old Course?
Kingsbarns Links
Highly regarded in the Scottish golfing community, Kingsbarns Golf Links offers uninterrupted views of the rugged coastline from almost all points of the course. Although it is a newer course, what it lacks in history it makes up for in great playing conditions and an impeccable layout. It is rated among the top 50 golf courses in the world and has excellent facilities.
Carnoustie is another of Scotland’s golf courses that ranks among the world top 100. A huge coastal links course, it is considered the most difficult course in the United Kingdom and among the most formidable in the world. Hazards include over 100 bunkers, rough, ditches, and out-of-bounds areas, on top of exposing wind from the North Sea that make it one of the most demanding and exciting courses to play. Carnoustie is the perfect place for those looking to test their game with a real challenge.
Dumbarnie Links
This 350 acre links course lies within the huge Balcarres estate and features a series of holes running along the coast, making for unique and dramatic views as you play. Dumbarnie boasts a modern design by Clive Clark who incorporated a variety of elevated tee positions into the course. Although occasionally overlooked, this course is consistently favored by those who visit.
Premier Golf can create your dream St Andrews golf package. With an office located in the town, we have a local team on hand to facilitate your trip. Their local knowledge and good relationships on the ground ensure your trip meets all of your requirements.
St Andrews golf packages are highly sought after, pre-booked tee times at the Old Course sold out through 2023. However there are a range of ways to get a tee time , or simply visit the hallowed ground as part of your trip.
What Makes St Andrews Special?
St Andrews is the birthplace of golf and home to the oldest golf course in the world, which itself boasts the sport’s most iconic landmark, the Swilken Bridge. Having already hosted the Open Championship a grand total of 29 times, and with the iconic 150th edition of the event won by Cameron Smith having taken place there in 2022, the club continues to make golfing history.
Although steeped in history, the course is not only favored for its historic significance, but it is also celebrated for its beautiful views and exhilarating playing conditions. There are a variety of acclaimed courses at St Andrews, with each one of them having its own personality and unique elements.
St Andrews Reviews
Amazing time.
The 3 golf courses we played were a real highlight – we liked the experience of the different kinds of courses and must say, that Kingsbarns was amazing! What an experience!
My husband and son played Carnoustie on Sunday as well and liked it a lot – they had a day of sunshine out there.
Incredible trip
Just a quick note on how much we enjoyed our trip. The hotels, golf, restaurants and transportation were all terrific (especially getting on the Old Course!!!). Also, who ever had the connection upstairs on the weather…a big thank you!
Loved every minute
Thank you for my “BUCKET LIST” trip to Scotland.
The Premier Golf staff exceeded my expectations in every way possible. The courses were impeccable. The accommodations were first class
Every moment of the trip we felt catered too and treated most kindly. It was 72 and sunny when we tee’ed off on the
“Old Course” *Goo sebumps*
My most sincere thanks for the trip of a lifetime!
Excellent time
Wow, what a great trip. It’s taken a few days for me to finally settle down and I have to say the trip to Scotland was fantastic. I am assuming you must have sent a memo to the weather gods because the weather turned out to be great. The hotels were excellent, especially in St . Andrews. Heidi’s recommendation of 18 Rusacks was absolutely on point!
The most amazing part was how Euan kept us on point. I swear he must have a twin brother because he was present at every single outing even when our groups were split. What a great person.
Kingsbarns!
Also, the golf were all magnificent. Kingsbarns is my second favorite golf course I have played to The Augusta National. The craziest thing is that the Kittocks resort course turned out to be the most difficult. Breathtaking views of the North Sea on the courses we played. One word comes to mind ” WOW”. I look forward to going back to Scotland in the next few years and I will only use Premier Golf.

Golfer around the world like to play The Old Course at St Andrews which has been the game’s spiritual home for over 300 years..
Legend has it that the game of golf has been played out on the links since the beginning of the 12th Century, when shepherds clipped small stones into rabbit burrows with crude and very basic clubs.
The game of golf was made illegal in 1457 by King James II for the simple reason that it was distracting men from their main discipline which in those days was archery practice.
In 1552, the town’s right to play golf on the links was officially established.
Two hundred years later the Society of St Andrews Golfers decided to have 18 holes instead of 22, creating the current worldwide format.
Since then The Royal and Ancient G.C. has been involved in developing the game and St Andrews became known as the ‘Home of Golf’.

The home of golf.
The St Andrews Old Course ( GOLF Magazine’s #3 ranked course in the world ) is the oldest golf course in the world. Golf can be traced there as early as the 15th century, which has established St Andrews as the “Home of Golf”. In 1457, James II of Scotland banned golf because of its growing popularity and time taken away from archery practice. Then in 1502, King James IV lifted the ban on golf and historians suspect he played golf there in 1504.
The St. Andrews Influence on Modern Golf
Early on the course was comprised of 12 holes, and a round consisted of 22. The holes were played twice in both direction while players skipped two holes. Then in 1764 the course was r educed to 18 holes. In 1832 the greens were enlarged and it created an economical way of maintaining and playing 18 separate holes and fairways.

St Andrews, Scotland
The home of golf.
The quaint town of St Andrews is located on the east coast of Fife in Scotland, 10 miles southeast of Dundee and 30 miles northeast of Edinburgh. Named after Saint Andrew the Apostle, the town has been home to an important church since the 8th century and is also site of the University of St Andrews, the third-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the oldest in Scotland.
Of course, St Andrews is known globally as the ‘home of golf.’ The Royal & Ancient Golf Club, founded in 1754, exercises legislative authority over the game, crafting and administering the rules in every country but the United States and Mexico. The Old Course has been the most frequent host of The Open – sometimes referred to as The British Open or The Open Championship – with great champions Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros hoisting the Claret Jug there.
Besides the other terrific golf courses that populate the area, St Andrews is also known for its pleasant, sandy beaches. Read Less

Letter from Europe
For one day a year, the clubhouse of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club opens to the public. Here's what we saw
David Cannon
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — It is, no question, one of the most recognizable edifices in any sport. And surely the most recognizable building in all of golf. Since 1854, the clubhouse of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club has sat directly behind the first tee on the Old Course at St. Andrews, the most famous 18 holes in any land. Not a bad spot really.
Hang on though. Only the outside of this esteemed establishment is really familiar to the vast majority. For most of us, what lies inside remains something of a mystery. Routinely, only the 2,500 or so worldwide R&A members and their guests are permitted entry through the side door on the right as you look at the building from the course. That fact is true 364 days of any non-leap year. On one day, however, November 30 or St. Andrews Day, the clubhouse is open to members of the public interested enough to take a tour of the premises.
I am, so I did. In the company of clubhouse manager Graham Clark, I spent a fascinating half hour looking around the various rooms on the ground floor. Only the ground floor. What lies above and below is still reserved for members, no matter what the calendar says.
Standing in the foyer in front of the porter’s desk, my eyes were immediately drawn to the silverware cabinet a few feet away. In it, alongside the likes of the Amateur Championship trophy and the Ladies Amateur Championship trophy sits the original claret jug. Last presented to the winner of the Open Championship in 1927—a young lad by the name of Bobby Jones—this priceless artifact never leaves the clubhouse.
Indeed, according to Clark, Jones himself must take some credit for that fact. It seems that the thought of something happening to the jug as it sailed back and forth across the Atlantic was just too stressful for the man who would go on to win the Grand Slam in 1930. By that time, a replica trophy was given to the “champion golfer of the year.”
One last thing, which will no doubt appeal to fans of quirk: the famous spelling mistake on the trophy used today—“Holylake” instead of “Hoylake” as the 1947 venue—is not one repeated from the original jug. Rightly and properly, on there, “Hoylake” is present and correct.
RELATED: Why aren't there more golf courses like the Old Course at St. Andrews?
Next stop, only a few yards to the left, is the Trophy Room, or the South Room (no one will ever accuse the R&A of being overly imaginative in their naming of rooms within the clubhouse). In there sit the various medals and cups played for by the members at the Spring and Autumn Meetings. Most famous among an eclectic mix that includes a Kangaroo Paw (which doubles as a cigar lighter) and a Canadian Silver Beaver, are the club captain’s balls. All the way back to 1754, every captain has hit a ceremonial drive off the first tee, had the ball returned by a local caddie, then had said ball enshrined in a silver casing. They’re not all silver though; captains of royal birth have golden balls.
Next stop was the Big Room, in which we found the largest single-piece carpet in Scotland. Hand-made by the now defunct Antrim Carpets in Ireland, it weighs just under half a ton. Originally home to the member’s lockers, this is the most visible room in the clubhouse—the large bay windows look out over the first and 18th fairways—and still plays host to a few sets of clubs. But only a select few—traditionally the longest-standing members—have that privilege.
Still, it is the various paintings to which the eyes are drawn. Queen Elizabeth is up there. As is her uncle, the Duke of Windsor. So is Sir Michael Bonallack, five-time Amateur champion and a past captain and secretary of the club (he and Lizzy Windsor have the honor of being the only two living people on the walls).
Zach Johnson showed off the claret jug in the "Big Room" inside the Royal & Ancient clubhouse when he won the Open in 2015.
David Cannon/R&A
Former Open champion Willie Park of Musselburgh is there too, but is making a guest appearance, replacing Freddie Tait, who is out on loan. Perhaps the most memorable image, however, is the portrayal of the first driving-in ceremony. Financed by every member in the frame (of which there are many), the trick, according to Clark, is to count how many dogs are in the picture (six, apparently).
MORE: The pandemic caused the R&A to do this for only the second time since 1754
“You can tell all the pictures that show a time before 1899,” says Clark. “No balcony on the front of the clubhouse.”
The Big Room is also home to what amounts to the club’s vetting service. Once a prospective member is accepted by the Club Committee, his or her name goes in “the book” and members are invited to support his application. Each prospective member will need somewhere between 30 to 40 members to support him if his application is to be accepted. It is, however, possible to be “black balled.” Members are free to write letters contesting the eligibility of any candidate. If two or three members object, the candidate will need 40 to 50 supporters to get in. If more than three members object, it is unlikely that candidate will be considered.
Interestingly, the clubhouse has no bar. Members wishing a drink can get the attention of a waiter or waitress or ring one of the many bells situated in the Big Room and elsewhere. And the food? The club has a deserved reputation for the high quality of its lunches (served upstairs in the dining room). Local fish and chips are always popular, as is the surely unique house specialty of mince and poached egg—a curious mix, even in the land that gave the world the haggis.
Equipment connoisseurs are not neglected on this tour. In the corridor that leads to the library, a wall cabinet contains clubs and balls that represent a graphic history of development in both. There are some classic clubs: the “water niblick,” another with adjustable lofts, and a “roller putter,” to name but three.
MORE: See where the Old Course at St. Andrews ranks on our latest World 100 Greatest list
In the library, which, disappointingly, it is far from extensive, hangs a map of the Old Course. That is not always the case. As the club owns more pictures than it has space for, the staff routinely make changes.
Next door, we found ourselves in the snooker room, a full-size table dominating the proceedings. It sees regular use, according to Clark, in what used to be the committee room. In fact, there used to be two tables, one for members, the other for staff who, until the 1950s, lived in the clubhouse. The female staff even had their own staircase to their quarters in what became a two-story structure in 1882.
Today then, as it has always done, the clubhouse continues to evolve. For example, should plans for new locker rooms go ahead, they will be located under the small car park that sits alongside this fascinating building. All in all, a must-visit for golf geeks everywhere.

Golf's most iconic building: our trip inside the royal & ancient clubhouse at st. andrews, share this article.
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – I still can’t decide what was the coolest piece of memorabilia on display at the R&A Clubhouse.
Was it the original oil paintings hanging on the walls? The prized silver Claret Jug that will be awarded to the Champion Golfer of the Year? Or the original Alister MacKenzie sketch of The Old Course surveyed and depicted in 1924? All spectacular and part of the rich history of the game, but then you see the original Challenge Belt that was awarded to the winner of the Open Championship from 1860-1870 until Young Tom Morris won the belt outright by winning the event three times in succession — that’s next level.
Welcome to The Royal & Ancient Clubhouse, situated behind the first tee of the famed Old Course, and an iconic building whose exterior is known instantly to golfers around the world. Arnold Palmer once described it as “being admitted to the Hall of the Gods,” and thanks to Golfweek rater and club member Derek Dobbs, I received a grand tour of the facility, which was originally built in 1854 in the Georgian style of the day.
Dobbs joined the private club, with approximately 2,500 members worldwide, in 1989, or as he put it, “long enough ago to know my way around.” He usually comes over and plays once a year. (He’s also a member at Royal Dornoch #Jealous.)
The entrance to the R&A Clubhouse at St. Andrews. (Photo by Adam Schupak)
Jacket and tie are required for entrance and sadly no photos or video are allowed. In the main lobby is a cabinet that houses many of the most prized trophies in golf – from the Amateur and Ladies Amateur Trophy to the Claret Jug itself. There are two versions – the one awarded custody for a year to the Champion Golfer of the Year and the one I studied intently, which never leaves the grounds and was last given to Bobby Jones when he won in 1927, and didn’t want to risk taking it home to America.
On to the Trophy Room, where my eyes were drawn to the silver balls and led to Derek sharing the back story of an infamous club tradition. Every year since 1754, the new captain hits the ceremonial drive from the first tee and the local caddie who retrieves it is awarded a prize. A silver casing of the ball is then attached to the cluster hanging from a silver putter like grapes on a vine. (Captains of royal birth — there have been four — have gold balls.) Later that evening, at a dinner, new members are required to touch this ornament to their lips and kiss the captains’ balls.
The Big Room, the main social room on the ground floor, presents floor-to-ceiling bay windows and a stunning view of the first tee. We sat and watched Trey Mullinax and others tee off and had a drink. The room is adorned with paintings of Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Michael Bonallack, the five-time British Amateur champion, and Old Tom Morris. To have a locker in this room, you must have been a member for 50 years.
R&A members watch Tiger Woods before he tees off on the first hole from the R&A Clubhouse during the second round of the 150th Open Championship golf tournament at St. Andrews Old Course. Mandatory Credit: Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports
Interestingly, members do not otherwise have their own lockers; rather, they find an empty one and pay a pound for its use. They’ve thought of most everything including a room for drying clothes in the locker facilities.
On November 30 or St. Andrews Day, the clubhouse is open to the public to take a tour of the ground floor, and I would encourage anyone to do so. But you’ll need a member to accompany you upstairs.
The walls heading up the staircase show off an impressive art collection that is rotated regularly. There were original oil paintings of The Great Triumvirate — Harry Vardon, John Henry Taylor and James Braid, the three leading British golfers of the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries — of Francis Ouimet, the American who won the 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club and was R&A Captain in 1951, and a painting of the 2003 annual meeting when Prince Andrew was named Captain. Past Open champion Peter Thomson and course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. were easy to pick out in the painting. Staff members were setting up for lunch as I admired the birds-eye-view of the first tee.
Spectators watch Tiger Woods (not pictured) on the 18th hole from the balcony of the Secretary’s Office at the R&A Clubhouse during the second round of the 150th Open Championship golf tournament at St. Andrews Old Course. Photo by Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports
The clubhouse is a museum piece housing museum pieces from the great game. With chamber upon chamber of ancient hickory putters, mashie-niblicks, brassies and cleeks, you wonder why there is a need for the British Golf Museum across the street. Here are housed so many priceless antiquities such as Old Tom Morris’s baffy spoon and Allan Robertson’s rut iron, circa 1850. These clubs were crafted by true craftsmen but are so primitive that they look better suited for gardening. There’s a wall of unusual clubs as well, including a rake niblick, and the evolution of the golf ball from feather ball (1840), gutty ball (1890) and even a leather ball (1943) in the Billiards Room.
The list of honorary members, which already included the likes of former Open champions Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino and Tony Jacklin, grew by three this week with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Paul Lawrie. As I made my way downstairs again, I spied a small wooden box with a slot cut out of the top. Tucked away on a table, it read, “Letter of support for candidates.”
Excuse me while I stuff it full.
