Sting to Tour North America as a Trio (Not That One)

By Charisma Madarang

Charisma Madarang

Sting announced that he’ll be hitting the road this fall as part of his Sting 3.0 tour with drummer Chris Maas (who previously collaborated with Mumford & Sons and Maggie Rogers) and guitarist Dominic Miller, his longtime collaborator.

While the frontman won’t heading on a reunion tour with his former Police bandmates, Sting 3.0 promises to celebrate “a new dynamic era showcasing selections from his vast catalog through the urgent lens of a tight three-piece combo.”

Members of Sting’s fan club will get first dibs to pre-sale tickets on  sting.com starting Monday, followed by pre-sales for Citi and American Express members throughout the week. General ticket sales will be available Friday at 10 a.m. local time on the website.

Although Police fans may be hoping for another reunion tour, Sting has said that their 2007/08 tour would only happen once. “When the Police reunited, it had been long enough, and it was the right time to do it,” he told Music Week in a 2023 interview. “And I’m taking credit for that because that was my decision. Doing it again would just be gratuitous and that won’t happen. But we did it, and everyone was happy that mum and dad got back together again and had one last fling.”

Sting delivers a rousing show on My Songs tour with fan favorites: 'I am a very lucky man'

sting new tour

VIENNA, Va. – Never mind when Sting talks about tantric sex .

His stamina as a performer and musician should be celebrated mightily.

At the scenic Filene Center at Wolf Trap Sept. 1, Sting played the first of two sold-out shows to kickstart the new North American leg of his My Songs tour , an outing that has circled the globe since 2019 – excepting a 2020 pandemic sidelining – and detoured as a Las Vegas residency.

Without pausing for a breath or break, the 71-year-old craftsman of some of the most sophisticated pop-rock in modern music barreled through an opening quintet of chestnuts that seesawed between Police mainstays (“Message in a Bottle,” “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”) and his storied solo career (“Englishman in New York,” “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You”).

These are not three-minute radio hits. They’re songs packed with challenging lyrics, complicated rhythms and serpentine codas. Intermingled elements of jazz, pop, rock and reggae. Poetic expressions of soul searching, quixotic love and yearning.

And yet, there was Sting, his voice as muscular as his biceps, headset firmly locked to allow him to roam the stage, bass neck titled upward as he leaned into his nimble finger work, rolling through his repertoire with ease.

In a field of graying rock icons, Sting is a platinum-topped torch bearer.

Which hits is Sting playing on his My Songs tour?

With a resume spanning nearly more than 45 years of material, Sting’s musical cup overfloweth with options.

But the point of the tour is to spotlight hits – still an impossible task given his dozen Top 40 smashes as a solo artist and another nine with the Police – while also paying remembrance to a few meaningful album tracks.

The precise musicianship of his excellent band, including longtime musical partner Dominic Miller on guitar, Zach Jones on drums and Kevon Webster on keyboards, provided “Fields of Gold” with a silky warmth (the stage, naturally, bathed in a burnt-orange hue) and pushed the soaring melody of the erudite “All This Time.”

Jam sessions: Steve Miller recalls late '60s San Francisco music having 'a dark side' but 'so much beauty'

Sting teased ace harmonica player Shane Sager that he couldn’t match the proficiency of Stevie Wonder’s original playing on “Brand New Day,” but the twentysomething Sager met the challenge with his soulful squawking throughout the song’s lackadaisical sway.

The well-paced, 19-song set list is bookended with some of Sting’s most recognizable singalongs, including Police favorites “Walking on the Moon” (no one “eeh-yoh-oh”s like Sting) and “So Lonely,” which dovetailed into its spiritual mate, Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry,” a showcase for Sting’s fluid bass work.

One of the most dynamic aspects of Sting’s music is its broad-minded sensibilities. Not many pop-rock stars could fashion a hit out of a pairing with an Algerian singer, as Sting did in 2000 with Cheb Mami. Their worldwide hit, “Desert Rose,” still stimulated with its collection of chanting, atypical cadence and Sting’s suggestively jutting right hip.

Likewise, the pair of pre-encore tracks from the Police’s final album, the landmark “Synchronicity” from 1983, reminded of that band’s inimitable magic.

“King of Pain,” its lyrics stacked with elegantly bleak imagery, its bridge both puzzling and profound, proved emotionally searing (Sting’s son, Joe Sumner, who opened the show, returned to trade verses with his dad).

And of course, the song most associated with Sting and the Police , “Every Breath You Take,” elicited the expected roar from the crowd as they sang along to this speedier live version over Sting’s haunting bass line.

While the radio favorites are certainly worth commemorating, the chosen album tracks and smaller hits that Sting has curated for the show also warrant attention. Background singer Melissa Musique slayed during a joyful spotlight moment on “Heavy Cloud No Rain,” while fellow backup vocalist Gene Noble infused “Shape of My Heart,” its chiffon melody as gorgeous as ever, with meaningful soul.

Early in the show when he finally paused, Sting graciously offered, “I am a very lucky man to be standing here right now.”

Indeed, he is. But his fans share in that good fortune.

How long will Sting be on tour in North America?

Given the length of the My Songs outing, it’s no surprise Sting and his band present a taut, 100-minute production.

They’ll continue to unfurl this sleek outing through Oct. 15 – including Sting’s One Fine Day festival in Philadelphia Sept. 9 that will reunite him with unlikely musical buddy, Shaggy – before returning overseas.

Sting and Shaggy concert was such a memorable night at The Roundhouse! They played for two hours!! I got the set list in the end and from what they planned, they have changed the last song, which should be Fragile, for Next to You. I sense it was a wise decision as people was more likely to dance than to watch.

I had some good laughs with Shaggy moves and improv, and with Sting playing the part of a prisoner in one particular song.

Other musicians were at their peak, even the guitar player who substituted Dominic, now recovering from surgery.

They distilled a lot of hits, including Love is the 7th Wave, which is so Shaggy in a way.

I am still feeling the positive vibes.

Sting is still incredible in concert! Sting is so freaking talented and I could watch and listen to him all day long! I thought it was funny he was wearing his own Merch. But I wish there was a shirt for the show like the lanyard picture instead. I wasn’t sure about the Shaggy pairing at first but it turned out to be a hit. Shaggy has the most contagious energy and that boy can cardio! The back up singers were surprisingly some of the best talent I have ever seen...they could’ve been headliners too. Every moment was enjoyed and the venue was amazing. KC you didn’t disappoint

Absolutely fantastic! While the Myth is kind of "meh" in terms of operation, it is still a great concert venue (although the stage could use a 1'+ raise) seeing legendary performers in a small venue is worth the price of admission every time! This is how concerts are meant to be and enjoyed. Loved everything about it! Opening the entire show with a Sting solo and closing the same way - CHILLS! Amazing! Please, offer more legends in small venues - we need that!

Sting will perform a five-date run in Japan with stops in Tokyo, Nagoya, Hiroshima before making his way to Malaysia. It is currently not known if additional Asia tour dates will be announced.

Sting sold his entire songwriting catalogue to Universal Music Publishing Group in a deal earlier this year in February, which include the rights to all Sting’s solo songs and the songs he wrote for The Police. The deal was rumoured to be worth over $250million, with Sting himself explaining, “It is absolutely essential to me that my career’s body of work have a home where it is valued and respected – not only to connect with longtime fans in new ways but also to introduce my songs to new audiences, musicians and generations.”

Sting, who is due to return to the studio this year, also shared his regret over his 2007 reunion with Police bandmates Andy Summers and Stuart Copeland, which resulted in a world tour.

Recommended

“At the time I labelled the tour an exercise in nostalgia. That was simply how I felt and is still how I feel today,” he explained. “I think it’s OK to be honest about your feelings and that was the way it went for me.

“That’s not a slight on the people I was with or the way things panned out, it’s just how I saw it by the end, and let’s be honest, that’s not how I wanted to remember it.”

STING ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘THE BRIDGE’ - DUE NOVEMBER 19...

September 01, 2021.

FIRST SINGLE “IF IT’S LOVE” AVAILABLE NOW Photo Credit: Eric Ryan Anderson

The Bridge showcases Sting’s prolific and diverse songwriting prowess, with this new set of songs representing styles and genres explored throughout his unrivalled career. The lead track “If It’s Love” premiered today on BBC Radio 2 and is available now on all digital platforms. The upbeat, breezy and infectious pop tune exhibits his undeniable gift for melody. In his signature voice, and taking a different approach to a straight-forward love song, Sting likens contemplating his romantic feelings to calling the doctor about his symptoms.

"I’m certainly not the first songwriter to equate falling in or out of love with an incurable sickness, nor will I be the last,” says Sting. “’If It’s Love’ is my addition to that canon where the tropes of metaphorical symptoms, diagnosis, and downright incapacity are all familiar enough to make each of us smile ruefully."

The Bridge was written in a year of global pandemic and finds Sting ruminating on personal loss, separation, disruption, lockdown, and extraordinary social and political turmoil.

Exploring a multitude of concepts and themes, a “bridge” represents the enduring and ever-evolving link between ideas, cultures, continents, and even the banks of a river. It’s also a route into the past, and so it was that Sting found himself considering the music and the places that have formed his own foundations, and that indeed are embedded in his very DNA.

He explains, “These songs are between one place and another, between one state of mind and another, between life and death, between relationships. Between pandemics, and between eras – politically, socially and psychologically, all of us are stuck in the middle of something. We need a bridge.”

Representing various stages and styles from throughout his career and drawing inspiration from genres including rock n’ roll, jazz, classical music and folk, the eclectic album features Sting’s quintessential sound on pop-rock tracks such as the album’s opening rock salvo “Rushing Water” and new indie-pop sounding “If It’s Love,” to the smoldering electronic ballad “Loving You” and the romantic “For Her Love” which evokes Sting’s trademark “Fields of Gold” period. “The Book of Numbers,” “Harmony Road” and “The Bells of St. Thomas” showcase Sting’s collaboration with his long-time guitarist/“right and left-hand,” Dominic Miller.

Written and recorded over the last year in lockdown, a coterie of trusted musicians beamed into Sting’s studio remotely including Dominic Miller (guitar), Josh Freese (drums), Branford Marsalis (saxophone), Manu Katché (drums), Martin Kierszenbaum (keyboards), Fred Renaudin (synthesizer) and backing vocalists Melissa Musique, Gene Noble, Jo Lawry and Laila Biali, The Bridge’s influences are vast; from grappling with the murky origins of the folk ballads in Cecil Sharp’s ‘Collection of English Folk Songs’, to J. Robert Oppenheimer, from the Roman history of Northumbria to Saint Thomas.   All songs on The Bridge are produced by Sting and Martin Kierszenbaum, except “Loving You” produced by Sting, Maya Jane Coles and Martin Kierszenbaum. The album was mixed by Robert Orton, engineered by Donal Hodgson and Tony Lake, and mastered by Gene Grimaldi at Oasis Mastering.

The Bridge will be released in multiple formats, including standard and deluxe CD and vinyl, Japanese Exclusive standard and deluxe albums, all digital streaming and download platforms, as well as a music cassette. The deluxe CD and vinyl will include bonus tracks “Waters of Tyne,” “Captain Bateman’s Basement,” and “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay.” Both Japanese exclusives will be on SHM-CD including the additional bonus track “I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City,” while the deluxe version will also include a DVD with an interview and track by track discussion with Sting, as well as music videos for “If It’s Love” and “Rushing Water.”

Later this month, Sting will return to the live arena with a performance in Sicily on September 27  followed by concerts at the historic Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens on September 30 and October 1. Soon after, he will launch My Songs: The Las Vegas Residency beginning October 29 at the The Colosseum at Caesars Palace featuring a compendium of his most beloved songs with dynamic, visual references to some of his most iconic videos and inspirations.

Sting is managed by the Cherrytree Music Company.
