Want to explore Lake Geneva by boat?

On a sunny day, there’s no better way to tour Switzerland than by water. Gaze at the country from its largest lake and learn something new about its shores, choosing a historic paddle boat, passenger ferry or cocktail-sipping sunset cruise.

Discover the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos

The Conne family have been producing wine for centuries in the heart of the UNESCO heritage region of Lavaux. Be hypnotised by rows of terraced vineyards then retire to the stone cellar to taste the vintages they have produced.

The alps are home to an endlessly romantic trail that can be taken on horse carriage ride. Rug up in blankets for this fairytale experience through alpine forests, arriving at a destination of snow capped mountains and an impressive glacier. The kind of views imagined when dreaming up a Switzerland trip.

Ride up to Stans by Switzerland's oldest mountain railway

Start in Lucerne and travel along tracks from the 1890s, watching villages and views pass by in the window. With wildflower meadows in the summer and snow dusted trees in winter, you will unwind as you wind around the mountains for 30 minutes before reaching the top.

Travel to the heart of Switzerland, Interlaken

The unassuming town of Interlaken is the perfect base to connect with the soul of Switzerland. Explore over 700 hikes which roam into the mountains from your doorstep, with charming isolated villages found sitting between them.

Our top 5 things to do in Switzerland

We'll take you through the pristine natural beauty of this country, with a trip that's filled with moments of awe. Lakes, grapevines and alpine forests prove it's not just the hills that are alive in Switzerland.

Swiss National Museum

There is a reason this is Switzerland's most frequently visited museum of cultural history. Inside, you will immerse in the past and present through some 840,000 objects. From bronze Age bowls to silver knight’s armour, nowhere else will deliver such a rich and comprehensive insight into the Swiss.

Lake Geneva

Charlie Chaplin museum

The property where Charlie Chaplin spent his last years provides an intimate glimpse into the iconic entertainer's life and work. Be moved by a walk through the vast estate, where you will marvel at his original bowler hat and boots, hear tales from friends and touch painstakingly replicated movie sets.

Zentrum Paul Klee

The namesake of this museum is one of the 20th century's most important artists. Step into the space to quietly take in his artworks, you might find yourself lost in the famous cubism inspired 'Insula dulcamara' or colourful jigsaw that the German-Swiss genius was most famous for.

Best museums in Switzerland

There's more to this landlocked country than army knives and chocolate. With Trafalgar, you will gain a deeper understanding of Switzerland through these must-visit museums.

Once a farmers’ breakfast, Rösti is now a plate popular amongst the Swiss. One bite into this crisp baked potato and you will be hooked. Luckily, the country's many regions boast their own versions, offering an excuse to sample many during your tour of Switzerland.

There is more to this classic fare than dipping bread into a pot of melted cheese. It’s a sacred pastime. To the Swiss, fresh bread and bubbling creamy Gruyere is incomplete without one vital ingredient: good company. Indulge in authentic fondue in Switzerland in the company of new friends.

Swiss chocolate

Chocolate aficionados will find no shortage of pleasure in the smooth chocolate of Switzerland. The birthplace of Lindt, Toblerone, Mövenpick and more, a banquet of cocoa will be enjoyed here in the name of culture.

Best food in Switzerland

Baked potato, melted cheese and genuine chocolate. The culinary delights of Switzerland were designed with only the pleasure of taste in mind, and it's an indulgence Trafalgar is only too happy to share with you.

What to pack for Switzerland

People packing for a tour

Even in summer, layers are vital in Switzerland. Temperatures differ throughout through the country and can get particularly crisp in the higher mountains.

A good quality camera

In a place known for pinch me moments, it would be remiss to forget something more than just a smartphone to capture them all.

Swiss Francs

Switzerland may be at the core of Europe, but this country abandoned the Euro many years ago. Though you can still use them in some larger establishments, but it's better to arm yourself with plenty of Francs so you're never caught short.

A phrasebook

A phrasebook with the national languages of German, French and Italian is essential on a tour of Switzerland. If you really can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.

Walking shoes

If your trip is likely to see you traversing the dynamic landscapes of Switzerland, a pair of sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots should be on the packing list.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Best time to visit switzerland.

May, June, September and October are wonderful months for seeing Switzerland, as the weather is typically mild, the mountain passes are still open and the country is less crowded than in the peak holiday months of July and August.

It tends to rain more in the months of March, April, October and November, and with snowfall usually present from December, this is the perfect time for skiers and snowboarders.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Switzerland shares borders with   Austria , Lichtenstein,   Italy ,   France , and   Germany .

A highly mountainous country, Switzerland's best-known ranges are the Alps in the south, with the mighty Matterhorn and iconic Eiger being the most well-known peaks.

Home to an abundance of rolling hills, lakes, glaciers, rivers, meadows and fields, Switzerland's landscapes are incredibly picturesque, particularly in spring and summer when the wildflowers are in bloom.

Top 5 culinary classics of Switzerland

While not enjoying the same worldwide popularity that it did in the 1960s and 70s, this Swiss classic is still alive and well in Switzerland. Although not to everyone's taste, travellers should experience sitting around a communal pot of rich, melted cheese at least once.

Who knew that a plate of grated, fried potato could taste so good? Considered to be Switzerland's national dish, Rosti was once relegated to the breakfast plate but is now served as an accompaniment to dinners too.

3. Bircher Muesli

This Swiss-German classic has taken off worldwide as a breakfast food, although it was originally created for hospital patients by a Swiss physician. Commonly eaten in the evening in southern Switzerland, it's a nutritious mix of oats, fruits and seeds.

This brioche-like, plaited bread is a traditional Sunday morning treat in Switzerland. Dating back to the 15th century, this delicious bread can be found in bakeries all over Switzerland, especially on Sundays.

Making hundreds of varieties of cheese, Switzerland is one of the best places in the world to indulge in a dose of calcium. Whether it's a chunk of hard Gruyere, a slice of Emmental or a bit of fruity Appenzeller, Switzerland has enough cheese shops to satisfy everyone.

The most scenic road trip

Wine Tourism

Hikes: hiking & trekking, autumn: holidays and excursions, matterhorn (4,478 a.s.l.) - symbol for switzerland.

The Matterhorn and Switzerland are inseparably linked to each other. The pyramid shaped colossus of a mountain, which is very difficult to climb, is said to be the most-photographed mountain in the world. The Klein-Matterhorn ("Little Matterhorn"), which can be reached via a funicular, lies adjacent to the Matterhorn.

The Rhine Falls

To stand high above Europe's largest waterfall, feeling the roar and vibration of the water over one's entire body - this can be experienced at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. By ship one can reach castles, the Rhine Falls Basin and even the mighty rock in the midst of the waterfall.

On the Top of Europe: A visit to the Jungfraujoch puts a jewel in the crown of any visit to Switzerland.

Château de Chillon

Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. For nearly four centuries Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy.

Creux du Van

"Creux du Van", a natural rock arena of immense proportions, is located at the border of the cantons of Neuenburg and Vaud. Impressive 160 meter high vertical rock faces surround a four kilometer long and over one kilometer wide valley basin.

Aletsch - the Largest Alpine Glacier

Incredibly immense, incredibly beautiful: the Large Aletsch Glacier is the Alps' mightiest ice flow. And the most popular, for it is easily accessible and is ideally situated for extensive hikes, winter sports and special nature excursions.

Swiss Museum of Transportation

Switzerland’s most visited museum showcases the past, present and future of mobility with interactive and varied exhibits. In addition to the museum, unique attractions found nowhere else in Switzerland, such as the film theatre, planetarium, Swiss Chocolate Adventure and Media World, are just waiting to be discovered.

Ruinaulta - Switzerland's Grand Canyon

The Ruinaulta owes its existence to the Flimser landslide 10,000 years ago, when 10,000 million cubic meters of rock thundered into the valley. The canyon-like ravine in the Vorderrhein Valley can be reached on foot, across the water, by train or by bike.

Expert tips

Discover the most beautiful hikes now. Switzerland is all about active recovery in pristine nature.

Swiss mountain railways take visitors to magnificent views as well as delightful and relaxing stays.

Spring in the city

Goodbye to the long winter months – it’s time to welcome the spring. Now it’s time to recharge your batteries, catch the sun’s rays and enjoy the fresh air. Switzerland’s cities are also in full bloom, showcasing spring’s awakening.

City oases in bloom

It is not just nature that awakens in spring – Switzerland’s towns and cities also wake from their winter slumber. Parks and gardens transform the urban centres, invigorating them with life. Roses, tulips and daffodils make this time of year particularly stunning.

Wellness with a clear conscience

Sustainable wellness: As the days start getting shorter, the weather outside gets colder and snow starts to fall, many people are drawn to soothing wellness facilities. However, there is no denying that whirlpool baths, saunas and relaxation in quiet surroundings involve the consumption of a great deal of thermal energy. By taking many steps, both large and small, these Swiss flagship spas show just how important and effective commitment to green principles is for our environment.

Panorama trains delight with large windows, mountain and lake views and other scenic attractions.

The itirenary is very good, it covers most of Geneva. The tour guide, Vitali is exceptional, he’s knowledgeable He goes to extra miles to make us stress free, comfortable & safe. He finds ways to open restaurant for us when its supposedly close (after 2pm),make table available when there was none. On our last day, he took us to this amazing & spectacular place for lunch. Last but not the least, I left my wallet/phone in one of the places we went to and he never hesitate to drive back 30 min. away and even knocking on doors(for it was past closing time. His dedication & love for his job is very commendable. Kudos to you Vitali. We appreciate all you did for us making our trip worthwhile & memorable. Thank you, Bella & Dong

Following are the things that should be included in your future offerings. - Tours should include some thrilling activities such as speed boat riding, 3D/VR experience, skydiving or other similar activities as an add-on options wherever available in the countries included in the package. This is because mere sightseeing and visit of cultural, religious and traditional places will add little to fun and thrill. - Hotels is the stay should be advised to ensure provision of basis necessities such as sleepers for washrooms, tooth paste. Hotels should also provide at least one or two Halal dishes to the people from Muslim countries.

Swiss Fairytale Tour

Swiss Fairytale

This tour was truly amazing. Me and my partner from Australia chose this tour which are a swiss based tour company. Vitalii was our guide for 8 days and his service was truly outstanding. He covered every single detail for us, was so knowledgeable about all of Switzerland and was such a fabulous host for the country. He always went the extra mile for us and it really made a difference. If you are wanting to see Switzerland highlights this tour is for you. There is no way we would of covered or been to all the places we got to see without this tour. It truly is an incredible country! We loved the smaller towns also and all the optional activities. I think it's also very cost effective way to see such a beautiful country. Highly recommended this tour company, you will be well looked after.

When travelling in Switzerland, you will need Swiss Francs (CHF). It is possible to purchase items in Euros whilst in Switzerland (selected establishments) however it should be noted that the change will be given back in CHF.

Passengers should exchange any spending money for their holiday before they actually travel. Whilst on tour it is very inconvenient and not all places you will visit will have ATM machines or accept credit/debit cards.

We also advise our passengers to keep some change in coins on them whilst on tour as using toilets in many parts of Europe is not free. USD, GBP or travellers’ cheques are not widely accepted at locations in this tour.

Breakfast will be provided at the hotels. The breakfast is usually in a separate dining area of the hotel and is usually a continental breakfast, which will consist of tea, coffee, bread, cereals, fruit and yoghurt.

Passengers can choose from different diets, including vegetarian, Jain or non-vegetarian (Halal will not always be available) meals. Passengers should advise the tour representative of their preferred diet on day one. The meals are pre-set buffet, and a choice of menu is not available. Meals will be provided with Tap Water only.

Lunches are usually vegetarian only and are provided outdoors at a service station/rest area where limited, or no seating is available. Lunch is served in a picnic style buffet arrangement. Dinners are usually provided within the hotel or restaurant in a separate dining facility. You should always consult your tour representative if you are not sure of what ingredients a dish contains.

Not all hotels in this tour will have air-conditioning so you should carry a small portable fan with you especially during the summer months.

Please also note that not all hotels provide a kettle so if hot water is required for warming milk etc. in the hotel then it is advisable to carry a bottle warmer/kettle as well as a thermos flask. Passengers may also want to carry a small travel iron and hairdryer etc., as many hotel rooms may not have these facilities.

Some hotels in Europe, especially Switzerland will provide two single beds put together as a Double occupancy room, as this sort of configuration allows the hotel to use a room for multi-use, we do contract with such hotels, and you should be prepared for such eventualities.

If you use services such as the phone or mini-bar or pay TV whilst in your room, you will have to pay the hotel directly when you check out; these services are not included in your tour cost. The maximum occupancy per room on this tour is 3 person(s).

Other Advisories

High altitude.

You should only make trips to high altitudes if you feel healthy. The following recommendations apply:

Advanced age is no barrier to high altitude. For blood pressure patients who are well controlled with medication, the altitude is not a concern. Asthmatics can travel to high altitudes without any problems. High-altitude air is less polluted with particles that can cause an asthma attack. Epileptics who are well controlled with medication should be able to negotiate the altitude.

Pregnant women: There may be a certain risk for pregnancy even without pre-existing diseases over 2500-3000 metres. Caution is therefore advised if in doubt, please consult your doctor in advance.

Infants: Short-term stays at the mountain tops are unproblematic. Infants and young children are often unable to equalise pressure during descent and are therefore increasingly at risk of ear irritation. Regular swallowing (drinking, sucking on a bottle) during the descent can prevent the occurrence of irritation.

Because children can chill faster than adults, always pay attention to sufficient protection from the cold at high altitude. Sunglasses and a good sunscreen are necessary on the glaciers!

High altitude visits not recommended for:

Lung and heart patients who are already short of breath while at rest or when climbing stairs are advised not to stay at high altitude. Patients with angina pectoris or severely impaired performance with heart enlargement and heart failure should not visit high altitude. Coronary artery disease (angina pectoris) and heart enlargement with medical therapy should not visit high altitude. Patients with a pronounced risk profile for cardiovascular disease (smoker + high blood pressure + diabetes + high blood fats + overweight + occasional chest pain) should consult the doctor before visiting high altitude.

Do not stay at high altitude after having striated muscles or a stroke.

Pick up and Drop off points

Passengers should arrive at their pick-up point no later than 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Your pick-up point, address and time will be stated on your invoice.

PICK UP POINT WILL BE ZURICH AIRPORT

DROP OFF POINT WILL BE GENEVA AIRPORT

Schengen Visa Details

Visas & Passports

A passport valid for three months beyond the length of stay and issued within the past 10 years is required by all nationals. Except EU nationals holding a passport or national ID card which is valid for the duration of stay.

If you hold an Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladesh Passport, you will need to obtain Schengen Visa prior to travelling. Many nationalities do not require Schengen visas, such as British, EU and American nationals. Should you need further clarification, please contact us.

Weather in much of Western Europe tends to be the same as England and is very unpredictable. Regardless of the time of the year, it is advisable to carry an umbrella.

Temperatures vary from place to place, and it is a good idea to check online for average temperatures for the destination(s) being visited depending on the time of the year.

On a multi-destination tour, it is likely passengers will travel through various weather fronts; whilst in Switzerland, during excursions to mountain tops passengers may experience temperatures between 0 °c and 2 °c whilst at the same time experience temperatures of over 30 °c whilst they are in France.

Passengers can be well prepared by ensuring they are carrying appropriate clothing, footwear and accessories. Passengers should also be aware that during the winter months most of the sightseeing will be in the dark as, in Europe, the day becomes dark very early during winter. Passengers should consult with Star Tours at the time of booking if they are unsure.

Wheelchairs

We will accept lightweight manual wheelchairs for travel, subject to them being capable of being stowed in the luggage hold of the coach.  It is also essential that a family member is also on tour to push their wheelchair. Star Tour’s will also request hotels for suitably equipped rooms; however, this is only on a request basis and cannot be guaranteed. It should be noted Mt Titlis & Eiffel Tower is not fully accessible for a wheelchair user. Brussels, Luzern and Lion Monument will have cobbled streets, which may not be suitable for wheelchairs.

Switzerland

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Switzerland set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of Switzerland in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel provider for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to get treatment there.

Read TravelHealthPro’s general COVID-19 advice for travellers .

Travel to Switzerland

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for people entering Switzerland.

More information is available from the Federal Office of Public Health or by calling the Coronavirus Infoline on +41 58 463 00 00 (7am to 5pm GMT). Assistance is available in English.

Public spaces

Cantons (administrative area) may impose further restrictions. Check cantonal websites for more details.

Passport validity requirements

If you’re planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements .

Your passport must be:

  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Contact the Embassy of Switzerland in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

Check with your transport provider or travel company that your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

Passport stamping

Check your passport is stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through Switzerland as a visitor. Border guards will use passport stamps to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area. If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit.

You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Schengen area and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport. Examples of acceptable evidence include boarding passes and tickets.

You can find more information on travel documents on the cantons website website. If you live in Switzerland, read our Living in Switzerland guide for passport stamping information.

Visa requirements

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

UK nationals do not need a visa to enter Switzerland. At passport control, UK nationals should use the ‘ALL PASSPORTS’ lane, whatever their residence status.

If you’re travelling to Switzerland and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Swiss government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you may need with the Swiss Embassy website .

If you are travelling to work in Switzerland , read the guidance on visas and permits.

If you stay in Switzerland with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Additional documents required by tourists

At Switzerland’s border control, you may need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if visiting your own property (for example, a second home)
  • show proof of insurance for your trip – check FCDO’s travel insurance guidance
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay – around 100 Swiss francs a day

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that you can take into and out of Switzerland. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. There is information about Swiss customs regulations on the cantons website .

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Switzerland guide .

Can hometown holidays alleviate childhood trauma? My return to Cornwall proves they can

I am sitting cross-legged in front of the TV in my creased school uniform in our home in St.Austell, Cornwall. I know something ominous is happening as I watch the morning news and a multitude of tanks are racing across the Kuwaiti desert. My cereal is getting soggy and I can hear my mother’s shrill tones in her panicked calls to relatives. This is always how I remember 1991. My father was working in Kuwait and would shortly become one of Saddam Hussein’s 'guestages' at a petrochemical facility in Basra.

There is of course a great deal more to this story, suffice it to say my father was eventually safely returned to us, but was understandably changed after his ordeal. My childhood was badly tarnished due to the fallout that followed and when I received a place at university, I didn’t glance behind me as I departed Cornwall in relief.

A Cornish Childhood

I was always considered fortunate by my city-dwelling friends to have spent my younger years embraced by the beautiful coastline and yes, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. However, it's taken valuable time to truly feel comfortable visiting, especially as my mother also suddenly passed away a decade ago from an illness. My only reason for returning 'home' was now no longer there.

More Travel Inspiration...

I took my family on a train tour around switzerland and it pushed us out of our comfort zone, 9 holiday destinations you won't believe are in the uk – inspiration for your staycation, 7 sustainable summer staycations to book for an eco-friendly break.

Now that I have a family of my own, however, I want to ensure that they can enjoy one of the most beautiful parts of the world without the shadow of tragic family events looming over them. I decided to tentatively book a week with my family in Cornwall, packed with activities I missed out on as a child. I hoped seeing their enjoyment would help rekindle a connection with a place that bad memories had unfortunately tarnished.

One of my early childhood memories was wandering down to the beautiful Charlestown Harbour with my family. Simple pursuits were common like glancing at the clipper ships moored in the tiny dock, throwing rocks into the sea as the tide meandered in and watching my father run to purchase fine-smelling smoked haddocks from the local smokehouse.

Its picturesque charms have also long been a draw for the  film industry , providing a stunning setting for countless movies and the period drama Poldark . It is a very different place now with a plethora of boutique art shops and I was pleasantly taken aback at the multitude of dining options. The smokery has long since shut, but it still evokes those memories for me and when I discovered you could now rent the place, it would have been remiss of me not to book it.

Situated in a prime location in the centre of Charlestown, The Old Smokehouse is a literal stone’s throw from any of the new artisan artists' shops and the multitude of restaurants that have now sprung up. Upon arrival, the very welcoming owner Brian and his wife left us a little gift of tea, coffee and Cornish treats which was very well received and the kids were overjoyed to see an ice cream shack literally five steps from the garden. Be warned, the ice cream is ludicrously delicious. The house is a very charming Iight and airy two-bedroom affair with an open plan lounge within which French doors lead out the small but well-maintained garden outside.

Sadly, the weather stopped us from being able to benefit from its charms most days, but when the rain finally abated we enjoyed the space immensely. Sipping a cool drink and watching the throngs of walkers going about their day was a pleasant pursuit as was hearing and seeing the sea from the garden, adding to the tranquillity.

Overall, The Smokehouse managed to impart a real home away from home feeling and I felt completely relaxed seeing the children running around the garden. It also reminded me of some of the more pleasant moments from my childhood and quelled any of my lurking anxiety.

The Eden Project

Storms and rain showers are another unavoidable aspect of Cornish life, so when the weather unsurprisingly scuppered our outdoor plans we decided to venture to The Eden Project . As the rain lashed sideways at us, it appeared that the rest of Cornwall also had the same idea as a multitude of cars filed neatly into the car parks. Completed in 2001, a few years after I had left the county, it’s an incredible structure to marvel at breathing life into what once was a disused claypit.

The biomes themselves nestle into the landscape like a set of behemoth eggs and as you enter them, the jackets you were wearing are instantly discarded as you acclimatise to the rainforest temperatures inside. Fauna and flowers adorn every inch of the inside and as you traverse to the top, a waterfall cascades down adding to the humidity. A recent addition is to experience the thrill of being at the top of a rainforest canopy. After a small queue, you traverse steel stairs to a platform suspended some hundred feet above the ground. It's not one for the faint of heart but makes you appreciate the true scale and height of the rainforests.

7 facts about The Eden Project you might not know

  • The location was first used in the 1981 BBC series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as the surface of an alien planet.
  • James Bond came knocking in 2002 to use the location for the film Die Another Day.
  • It is home to the world's largest indoor rainforest.
  • The Eden Project hosts England's longest and fastest zipwire where you can reach speeds of up to 60mph!
  • Abseilers are used to scale and clean the special plastic which makes the biome structures.
  • At least 230 miles of scaffolding was utilised in constructing the biomes gaining the Eden Project an entry in the Guinness Book of Records!
  • Bear Grylls officially opened the Rainforest Lookout viewing platform. He did this by jumping off it and then abseiling down it in 2010.

Cooling Off

The Mediterranean biome adjacent to the rainforest is a cooler affair, and also home to a restaurant offering pizzas and paella and educational shows for children. Watching thrill seekers experience England’s fastest zip wire above our heads made me want to participate in some of the adrenaline-fuelled activities on offer. Sadly, the weather yet again had other plans for any outdoor pursuits which had to be put on hold again.

St. Moritz Hotel and the North Coast

When people normally think of Cornwall, there is the temptation in the mind to conjure up the bars and clubs of Newquay and the accompanying famous surf scene. The beaches of the North are synonymous with this, but in recent years a new breed of hotels has also begun to appear offering a more premium experience than staying in a holiday campsite.

Having driven past it when visiting my mother (the stunning Daymer Bay was one of her favourite walks) I decided that I had to experience the St Moritz Hotel . Our mother’s ashes were let go around Daymer Bay so it would be a bittersweet return. I was hoping the hotel, coupled with the coastline, would have a calming effect and change my negative feelings about the area.

Almost art-deco in appearance, the hotel offers self-catering suites and also hotel rooms plus a spa and swimming pool complex. Sadly, the indoor pool was being refurbished during our visit to the tune of a two-million-pound makeover. A complimentary taxi took you to neighbouring The Point to utilise their facilities, however. The option was there to use the 'cooler' outdoor pool too for the brave. We opted to stay in one of the newly refurbished apartments which delivered an Ibizan beach house vibe. Spacious, well appointed and with excellent kitchen facilities it ticked the premium box, although a slight gripe was noticeable mildew on the bottom of our curtains.

We ate at the Shorecrest Restaurant for both lunch and dinner and it was a highlight of our stay. Head Chef Vicki Aire is doing amazing things here and has even elevated a simple Caesar Salad to transcendent levels. A new chef de cuisine is supposedly starting soon – Jake Grove, previously at Nathan Outlaw. There is certainly investment in the kitchen and it shows. The staff throughout the whole hotel were on the top of their game with special mention to the waiting staff who were very attentive but unimposing during all of our meals.

We also managed to experience a day when the clouds parted, so we could meander down the clifftop path attached to the hotel to walk from Daymer Bay to Polzeath. It’s a stunning walk where frothy white waves cascade across the coastline, beating the craggy rocks with relentless strikes. Having felt more relaxed after our stay at St Moritz, the memories of walking here with my mother seemed a less melancholic and more celebratory experience this time around.

Padstow and the Camel Trail

Taking advantage of the newly appearing sunshine, we decided to drive a few minutes down the road to Wadebridge to cycle the camel trail to Padstow. There are a few options for cycle hire, but Camel Trail Cycle Hire represents the best value for money and service in my opinion. It’s also very close to the start of the camel trail section which takes you to Padstow.

The whole cycle trail is 18 miles long, but as we had young children we decided we would cycle to Padstow and back which would be ten miles in total. You cycle next to the estuary for the majority of the ride, which takes you along bridges and stunning vistas to the famous town of Padstow. One word of advice is to start early as you will have a multitude of company whatever the weather.

Stopping in Padstow, you can’t help but be barraged with the influence of famous restaurateur Rick Stein who started his eponymous seafood restaurant here. That notwithstanding, simple things such as grabbing a pasty and crabbing are still common pursuits of those who visit. My trips here with family were a regular occurrence before the working harbour became second fiddle to the shops and restaurants.

The town has embraced its new moniker with enthusiasm but some shops can feel overpriced and overtly marketed as tourist traps. It’s a Cornish dichotomy that plays out daily, trying to appeal to the millions of visitors who frequent the county but also attempting to keep a sense of tradition and identity alive.

A time for reflection

Back in Charlestown, I had time to reflect on the trip and these new experiences in a place I always associated with negative feelings. I watched my children playing happily on the pebble beach adjacent to the harbour. Seeing them dance in and out of the sea, their trousers rolled up at their knees, reminded me of my own experiences as a child; blissfully unaware and equally uncaring for the future. I realised that my negative views from my experiences had completely clouded my ability to live in the moment, let go and just enjoy the present when in Cornwall.

DISCOVER:  How I finally found my sense of adventure after 45, says Louise Minchin

The whole trip had imparted a sense of catharsis through a purgation of the tough emotions I’d been carrying around. I’d successfully managed to treat coming back as a holiday by simply being a tourist. Cornwall will always have an association with trying family times, but like the county itself, I’ve also evolved. I now feel fortunate that Cornwall is somewhere I can once again call home.

For bed and breakfast for two adults in a ground floor suite at  St. Moritz Hotel, the cost is £2225 for 7 nights. With two children additional it is £2785.

The Old Smokehouse can be booked via Cornwall Hideaways . Prices range depending on the date that you book but our seven-day break cost £1093.
