Legendary rock band The Who have announced their first European dates in seven years. The shows will see the band performing with a full orchestra each night. The iconic band’s upcoming European tour will feature the band bringing their orchestral rock show to Berlin, Paris, Florence and Barcelona for the first time.

Pete Townshend , Roger Daltrey and band will be performing music from throughout the band’s nearly 60-year career, including sections devoted to classic albums Tommy and Quadrophenia as well as other beloved Who tracks and songs from their 2019 WHO album, their first studio release in 13 years.

The 2023 European shows follow this year’s highly acclaimed The Who Hits Back! tour of Canada and the US, where the band shared the stage  with some of the finest orchestras in North America.

The 2023 European tour will feature THE WHO’s full live band comprised of guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend , keyboardist Loren Gold , second keyboardist Emily Marshall , bassist Jon Button , drummer Zak Starkey and backing vocals by Billy Nicholls , along with orchestra conductor Keith Levenson , lead violinist Katie Jacoby and lead cellist Audrey Snyder .

Commenting on playing in Europe for the first time in almost a decade, Pete Townshend said, “It is wonderful that we can return to Europe after so long away, to play Berlin, Paris, Florence and Barcelona, four of my favourite cities in the world. We look forward to bringing our grand orchestral show which has received such great reviews so far and play some old-fashioned Who-style rock ’n’ roll songs from our back catalogue as well. We mix it all up in the most amazing evening of music: I have to say that this show is one that I personally enjoy as much as anything I have ever done in the 60 years I’ve been working with Roger. I so look forward to visiting these beautiful cities to see our old fans, and I hope we meet some new ones. We are so lucky to be able to spend an evening with you all.”

The Who wound up their The Who Hits Back! tour of the US in November this year, having wowed audiences in over thirty cities, with media and fans agreeing that the band were as good as, if not better than ever and that the orchestral arrangements, most of which were done by the legendary David Campbell , brought a new depth and excitement to Pete Townshend’s music.

Why ask to the Who to come to UK for a Tour? You should know that The Who is a English band and it will be in UK that their last dates will be take place. Maybe for a Summer festival this year or in 2023 ou 2024. Less probably in Netherlands, Germany or Scandinavia. But I really don’t know actually. If you love the Who you Can Come in Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, or Firenze especially if you live in Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia whatever.

Kommen The Who auch mal, nach Österreich? Vielleicht nach Graz? Würde mich freuen, wenn Pete, Roger und Band mal, in die Steirische Landeshauptstadt kommen könnten! Bis jetzt waren The Who nur in Wien.

Translation: Will The Who ever come to Austria? Maybe to Graz? I would be happy if Pete, Roger and the band could come to the Styrian capital! Until now, The Who have only been in Vienna.

' src=

I guess I missed the North American dates? 🙁 would love to see you guys live, idk if I will ever get the chance… love The Who though!!!

' src=

Nederland kan ook! Amsterdam is een idee! Of België of Oberhausen.

' src=

Gents, In the past, early seventies en late sixties, you toured with a Dutch band, Golden Earring in the USA. Earring stopped in 2021 because of a serious illness (ALS) of George Kooymans. I thought that Pete and Roger might be interested in this information.

Peter Stiekema, Whofan since 1965. Hope to see you in London.

' src=

Still waiting to see you at Manchester Arena, what’s happened since 2021?

All 2021 UK tour dates were cancelled due to the pandemic and tickets refunded.

' src=

Any chance of any extra dates in Europe?

' src=

No Netherland? 🙁

' src=

BERLIN What a wonderful show and beautiful venue. Tears of joy and sadness – probably also a farewell.

The who announces 2023 european tour dates, wembley stadium live album.

The Who announces 2023 European tour dates, Wembley Stadium live album

Band returns to The UK this summer

Legendary rock band The Who has announced a UK tour which will see the band performing with a full orchestra each night with shows from July 6th to 23rd in Hull, Edinburgh, London, Derby, Badminton, Durham, St Helens and Brighton. Joining them will be UB40 featuring Ali Campbell across all regional shows except for The O2 London and Edinburgh Castle dates.

Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and band will be performing music from throughout the band’s nearly 60-year career, including sections devoted to classic albums Tommy and Quadrophenia as well as other beloved Who tracks and songs from their 2019 Who album, their first studio release in 13 years.

The 2023 UK shows include Edinburgh Castle, the band’s first show in the Scottish capital in over 40 years as well as shows in Derby, their first since 1966, The O2 London, Durham and Brighton Cricket grounds. The gigs follow last year’s highly acclaimed The Who Hits Back! Tour of the US, where the band shared the with some of the finest orchestras in America.

The 2023 UK tour will feature The Who’s full live band comprised of guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend, keyboardist Loren Gold, second keyboardist Emily Marshall, bassist Jon Button, drummer Zak Starkey and backing vocals by Billy Nicholls, along with orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, lead violinist Katie Jacoby and lead cellist Audrey Snyder.

The Who wound up their The Who Hits Back! tour of the US in November last year having wowed audiences in over 30 cities, with media and fans agreeing that the band were as good as, if not better than ever and that the orchestral arrangements, most of which were done by the legendary David Campbell, brought a new depth and excitement to Pete Townshend’s music. Our own Matt Bailey attended the stop in Washington, DC .

Performing with The Who and an orchestra had been a long-held ambition for singer Roger Daltrey. “Having not toured the UK for six years, it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me. This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights,” he says.

“Roger initially christened this tour with an orchestra Moving On!” Townshend adds. “I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the UK.”

The Who are calling upon fans to add an optional £1 donation onto their ticket price at point of sale in support of Teenage Cancer Trust. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey are longstanding supporters and Roger has been the driving force behind Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall concerts since they began in 2000.

In July 2019, The Who headlined Wembley Stadium in London for the first time in 40 years. The show was the only UK date on their Moving On! Tour and featured the band accompanied by an over 50-piece orchestra performing classic tracks and more as well tracks from their Who album. The Who With Orchestra Live At Wembley will be released as a limited edition yellow, orange and red 3 LP set, black 3 LP , 2 CD/Blu-ray set which features the audio remixed in Dolby Atmos/5.1 mixes and a single CD edition on March 31st via UMe.

The Who Hits Back 2023 UK Tour Dates:

July 6 – Hull @ Sewell Group Craven Park July 8 – Edinburgh @ Edinburgh Castle July 9 – Edinburgh @ Edinburgh Castle July 12 – London @ The O2 July 14 – Derby @ The Incora County Ground July 16 – Bristol @ Badminton Estate July 19 – Durham @ Seat Unique Riverside July 21 – St. Helens @ Totally Wicked Stadium July 23 – Brighton @ The 1st Central County Ground

The Who Release First Handful of 2023 Tour Dates

by Tina Benitez-Eves December 9, 2022, 9:45 am

Following up their The Who Hits Back! Tour of Canada and the U.S. in 2022, The Who has added on a small number of dates in Europe in 2023.

Videos by American Songwriter

Marking the first time the band has played in Europe in seven years, the initial three dates include shows in Spain, France, and Germany and kick off in June. Additional shows, including a full series of shows in the UK, will be added at a later date.

Like their most recent North American dates, The Who will be backed by a full orchestra for their European tour, featuring orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, cellist Audrey Snyder, and violinist Katie Jacoby.

Founding members Roger Daltrey, 78, and Pete Townshend, 77, will be backed by their longtime touring band—guitarist Simon Townshend, bassist Jon Button, keyboardists Loren Gold and Emily Marshall, and drummer Zak Starkey along with backing vocals by Billy Nicholls—and perform music from their nearly 60-year career, with sections devoted to the albums  Tommy  and  Quadrophenia .

“It is wonderful that we can return to Europe after so long away, to play Berlin, Paris, and Barcelona, three of my favorite cities in the world,” said Townshend in a statement. “We look forward to bringing our grand orchestral show which has received such great reviews so far and play some old-fashioned Who-style rock and roll songs from our back catalog as well. We mix it all up in the most amazing evening of music.”

Townshend added, “I have to say that this show is one that I personally enjoy as much as anything I have ever done in the 60 years I’ve been working with Roger.”

Earlier in 2022, Townshend joked that Roger Daltrey “wants to sing until he drops,” and that this isn’t a final Who tour. “No. It’s not a farewell tour,” said Townshend . “Apart from anything else, we still have people who have tickets for the UK 2019 tour [ The Who’s 2020 UK tour that was cancelled in 2021]. We’re very, very keen to do that tour and we’ll be doing that in 2023.”

The Who has announced the first three concerts of their 2023 European tour. As it stands now, the band led by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will feature a full orchestra every night, will play Barcelona, Spain on June 14th; Berlin, Germany on June 20th; and Paris, France on June 23rd. More cities will soon be announced.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on December 14th at 11 a.m. CET at Ticketmaster.

Pete Townshend said in the statement announcing the 2023 trek :

It is wonderful that we can return to Europe after so long away. We look forward to bringing our grand orchestral show which has received such great reviews so far and play some old-fashioned Who-style rock ’n’ roll songs from our back catalog as well.

We mix it all up in the most amazing evening of music: I have to say that this show is one that I personally enjoy as much as anything I have ever done in the 60 years I’ve been working with Roger. We are so lucky to be able to spend an evening with you all.

Pete Townshend told us that he relishes the chance to shake the tried and true Who show up these days: ["Y'know, it's 52 orchestral ( laughs ) musicians on the stage with us and Zak Starkey with an electronic drum kit. Y'know, and I'm having to leave my Marshall stacks at home ( laughs ). It isn't exactly Guns N' Roses, y'know what I mean? It's a very, very different experience."] SOUNDCUE (:14 OC: . . . very different experience)

Roger Daltrey told us he's adamant that the current road dates showcase the Who at its most unrelenting:  ["I don't want the Who to compromise the way we play at all . I want the same venom coming out of Pete and me and within the songs that are there that is always there. We just do not have to make the racket on the stage. We can do it in a way now that the PA can make that noise; I mean we actually generate it, but we do not need the volume on the stage, we can move it out to the sides, so the crowd get the full whack of the Who as it is as a six-piece, and then the orchestra added on top just makes it mega, y'know?"] SOUNDCUE (:29 OC: . . . it mega y'know)

The Who will perform acoustically on December 13th at London's St. Luke’s Church in London. All proceeds from the show will benefit Nordoff Robbins and the music therapies it supplies to challenged children.

They also announced the release of a new live album recorded at the famous Wembley Stadium. “The Who with Orchestra Live at Wembley” will be available next March 31.

The Who Rolls Out First 2023 European Dates

The Who Rolls Out First 2023 European Dates

Getty Images

The Who has announced the first three concerts of their 2023 European tour. As it stands now, the band led by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will feature a full orchestra every night, will play Barcelona, Spain on June 14th; Berlin, Germany on June 20th; and Paris, France on June 23rd. More cities will soon be announced.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on December 14th at 11 a.m. CET at Ticketmaster.

Pete Townshend said in the statement announcing the 2023 trek :

It is wonderful that we can return to Europe after so long away. We look forward to bringing our grand orchestral show which has received such great reviews so far and play some old-fashioned Who-style rock ‘n’ roll songs from our back catalog as well.

We mix it all up in the most amazing evening of music: I have to say that this show is one that I personally enjoy as much as anything I have ever done in the 60 years I’ve been working with Roger. We are so lucky to be able to spend an evening with you all.

Pete Townshend told us that he relishes the chance to shake the tried and true Who show up these days: “Y'know, it's 52 orchestral ( laughs ) musicians on the stage with us and Zak Starkey with an electronic drum kit. Y'know, and I'm having to leave my Marshall stacks at home ( laughs ). It isn't exactly Guns N' Roses, y'know what I mean? It's a very, very different experience.”

Roger Daltrey told us he's adamant that the current road dates showcase the Who at its most unrelenting: “I don't want the Who to compromise the way we play at all . I want the same venom coming out of Pete and me and within the songs that are there that is always there. We just do not have to make the racket on the stage. We can do it in a way now that the PA can make that noise; I mean we actually generate it, but we do not need the volume on the stage, we can move it out to the sides, so the crowd get the full whack of the Who as it is as a six-piece, and then the orchestra added on top just makes it mega, y'know?”

The Who will perform acoustically on December 13th at London's St. Luke’s Church in London. All proceeds from the show will benefit Nordoff Robbins and the music therapies it supplies to challenged children.

JUST ANNOUNCED: The Who European tour dates ( subject to change ) :

June 14 – Barcelona, Spain – Palau Sant Jordi June 20 – Berlin, Germany – Waldbuhne June 23 – Paris, France – La Defense Arena

Well, what can you say about a group that are only 50% of the original line up who still manage to rock a joint even after 40 years? They were FANTASTIC! A surprise warm up performance from Noel Gallagher ( incidentally, the only acoustic performance of the night.) doing a couple of High Flying Birds numbers and then teasing the audience with fake intros to Wonderwall and segueing into another track, finishing up with a rousing Don't Look Back In Anger.

Then it was time for the big boys. Pete made a polite mea culpa explaining that there just really wasn't time to get the acoustic show to a level or loud enough to rock this gaff "So I bought this old red thing with me!"

Well, with that he transformed into a teenager and rocked the gaff!

Roger was rejuvenated as well, demolishing tambourines and testing the cable of his microphone to the limit hurling his mike around. His voice still with that brilliant growl pulling the tableau that is Tommy together. Simon, Pete's brother and Zack Starkey played their parts admirably supplying character voices and playing guitar and drums like they had always been band members.

There's only so many tracks on the Tommy album but there was no way that they were going to end the night there and went into what can only be described as a brilliant rendition of all the intros to every CSI detective show climaxing with "We Won't Get Fooled Again".

There is only one person who could finish a gig that good with by introducing the whole band with the phrase "You were all crap!" and that's Pete. Did they fall below his exacting standards? We'll never know, but in my opinion they were brilliant and roll on Saturday for round two! A great gig for an even greater charity - Teenage Cancer Trust and all that they help as Roger finishes every gig BE LUCKY!

What. A. Night. Totally fantastic - actually, words really don't have any meaning - especially when it comes to "Love Reign O'er Me". Roger has said that he's started to sing songs as if it's the last time he will ever sing them, and it shows. John Correy seems to have a similar attitude to playing the keyboard introduction. It was pure magic.

The Who really were wonderful. I really hope I DO see them again - I need another fix - but if it never happens again (gawd forbid) I will forever treasure tonight. Yes, the sound was a bit 'muddy' but that's stadia for you. It was a shame because I didn't catch much of the banter. The guys are obviously enjoying themselves...

They did quite a chunk of "Tommy", including "Christmas" and "The Acid Queen", which was a rare treat.

The energy was definitely up and the crowd, although not completely full, was big.

If you do get the chance, go. Don't let anyone tell you they're "past it". Roger and Pete may be in their 70s, but they rock as hard as guys half that.

Even at about 70 years old, The Who put on a tremendous show. The energy in the place was absolutely electric. From the first Pete Townshend "Windmill" (Which he did over 80 of throughout the show) all the way to the final note from Daltrey (which, for us, was "The Scream" from Won't Get Fooled Again... Which he NAILED!!!) you couldn't have gotten more excitement out of the place. Sure, Daltrey can't hit every note like he used to, but his passion is still as strong as ever and he gives it everything he has, as does Pete.

Overall, it was the best concert I've ever attended, and I've attended quite a few. I've never seen The Who before, but watched concert footage from them in the 70's and this was not a disappointment... in fact, it may have been even better than when they visited Houston in 1975 when I compare it to the footage on YouTube.

I'd highly recommend this concert to anyone who enjoys good Rock & Roll or has even heard of The Who, as you'll be like me and think afterwards, "Wow, I only had to pay that much to see that good of a show?! Totally worth it!"

The Who in San Diego was fantastic as anywhere. I sat in the ninth row and we had waited for this concert eight months from a cancellation. Even the first back u I sat in the ninth row and we had waited for this concert eight months from a cancellation. Even the backup group was great. They played all their classics as usual.only thing I was surprised that they didn't come back and at least play one song at an encore. It might be because Roger is taking extreme caution with this Maurice not doing more than eight. And I don't blame only thing I was surprised that they didn't come back and at least play one song at an encore. It might be because Roger is taking extreme caution with his throat and allergies and not doing more than he has too . And I don't blame her him.Petes son is also playing guitar with them

I've seen The 'OO in 79, 80, 82, 94, 95, 07, 12, 13.

As they plan their 50th anniversary tour for spring of 2015, I recommend anyone who loves classic rock to see them. They still had their original energy of the 70's when I saw them last tour.

Often they will pull out more obscure songs for the hardcore fans but you can expect amazing renditions of family radio hits. As rock royalty goes, they have suitably expanded the musician on stage so they musically success playing a full sounds only doable in the studio 40 plus years back.

Despite Roger and Pete being the only surviving of the four, they find that perfect middle path between now and then.

The Quadrophinea tours of 1994/95 and 2011/12 were by far my favorites.

Had a brilliant time, however, I will say despite the atmosphere, the acoustics (mainly referring to new orchestra which was beautiful) were far too loud and overpowered the amazing vocals of The Who to the point we were lip reading and singing our much beloved songs. This, I presume, will be rectified as was an error and again, still fabulous atmosphere. Also, we were sat far from stage and camera work for projector screens....must do better. Roger was swinging his mic on stage whilst we're watching bottom of drums/member of orchestra reading music notes. All in all, amazing but that's because it was The Who, if they make minor changes in sound levels going forward it will be best ever concert guaranteed!

I almost didn't get into the show. After we went through security and they were ready to scan our tickets, I didn't have mine. I panicked first. I walked out of security where we were in line and there was my ticket on the floor being walked on. This was the most amazing Who concert I've seen. Roger Daltrey hasn't aged one year. His voice is stronger than ever before. I got the chills listening to him. Pete has slowed down but still a great singer and showman. They played so many of their classics. Also they were so personable with the audience. Like any concert this was much to short. The Who lives on and I hope they come back to Minneapolis real soon.

This was the fiftieth anniversary tour of The Who. I was lucky enough to have seen them 50 years ago as a wide eyed lad of 10 when they were the opening group for The Hermans Hermits.

I have seen them a good half dozen times since over the years.

Truthfully, one can never tire watching Pete Townsend. He still is amazing!

There were a number of jokes by Townsend about getting old, and while he isn't jumping in the air, he is still doing guitar windmills and playing amazingly.

It is truly special seeing them everytime.

If you are lucky enough to be able to get seats, then I advise you not to miss the opportunity.

Talking bout my generation.

The who rocked Honda Center on May 22. I had seen The Who twice before. Once at the Los Angeles Coliseum over 30 years ago and the recent Quadraphenia Tour in Las Vegas. They had more energy on stage and look like they were having the most fun ever. They played all their great hits spanning the 50 years of rocking the world !!!!! I had the privilege of seeing them three times in my lifetime. I would highly recommend anyone getting a chance to see them one last time to do so . You will not be disappointed. Long Live Rock and Roll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It just does not get any better. The Best. Hope they keep going. We will travel to see these great artists again and again. The best group on the planet as far as I'm concerned. Second to none. After adding Zac and Simon, they have not missed a beat. Saw them in AC with Zac's God-Father in the late 70's. Will continue to support them and Teen Cancer for Life. New Album will be incredible. Will try to see them again on their incredible tour and journey.

Champions League semi-finals: Meet the teams

Club competitions

Why Bayern can win the competition Bayern have had their ups and downs, but title-winning class is permanent; in Thomas Tuchel, they have a coach who boasts the same quality. To an extent, the pressure is off in Europe, with domestic travails dampening expectations. But, in Kane, the six-time European champions have an elite striker, the type of player who could fire them to title number seven.

How Bayern play Tuchel has preached about "fast and fluid" football since arriving at the club last season, and that translates into sharp vertical passes out from the back and some incisive interplay in the final third. Kane has proved the perfect puzzle piece up front, not just because of his goalscoring but also his ability to drop deep and link up the play, allowing Bayern to get the best out of the pace advantage they have against most sides in wide positions.

Coach: Thomas Tuchel Tuchel impressed with Mainz and Dortmund before guiding Paris to a domestic treble and the Champions League final in 2019/20. He took over at Chelsea in January 2021 and led them to Champions League glory in a matter of months, before returning to Germany with Bayern in March 2023 and steering them home in the title race. He will leave the club at the end of the season.

Key player: Harry Kane The England captain and the German giants have proved a match made in heaven. Kane's record-breaking scoring rate has made Bayern's acquisition of the former Tottenham striker look like one of the bargains of the summer. Beyond his insatiable appetite up front, Kane has underlined his ability to link play with an incredible range of passing, while helping to raise the game of every player around him and leading by example in all areas of the pitch.

Did you know? Heading into their last-four first leg with Madrid, Bayern had lost only three of their previous 27 home matches in UEFA competition semi-finals (W16 D8).

Dortmund (GER)

UEFA coefficient ranking : 10 Group F :   W3 D2 L1 F7 A4 (winners) Round of 16 : 3-1agg vs PSV Quarter-finals : 5-4agg vs Atlético de Madrid Semi-finals : vs Paris, 1-0(h) , 07/05(a) Last season : Round of 16 (L1-2agg vs Chelsea) Best European Cup performance : Winners (1996/1997) Top Fantasy Football points scorer : Mats Hummels (75)

UEFA.com Dortmund reporter : Not many expected Dortmund to be the first team to qualify from an extremely tough Group F. Having lost 2-0 at Paris in the first match and drawn another blank at home to Milan (0-0), back-to-back wins without conceding against Newcastle changed their fortunes. Another mature performance at Milan ensured qualification with one game to spare. BVB held their nerve under intense pressure from PSV in the last-16 return to reach the quarter-finals, where they edged a classic against Atlético de Madrid.

Why Dortmund can win the competition When Dortmund get on a roll they take some stopping. BVB stumbled in the first leg in Eindhoven and again in Madrid but, stirred by a boisterous crowd, the Black and Yellows prevailed each time. Home advantage is a major factor. Dortmund have shown this term that they can beat any team, so their journey in this season's competition is far from over.

How Dortmund play Wary of a difficult task ahead, BVB set out with a counterattacking mindset and a back three for the first group match at Paris. They changed their set-up during that match, brought on a natural No9 instead of two counterattacking forwards and their game improved right away. Since then, they have always opted for a system with a back four and three central midfielders, with pacy wingers such as Donyell Malen, Karim Adeyemi and Jadon Sancho playing a decisive role. From that basic formation, Dortmund are capable of progressing the ball or pressing in different ways.

Coach: Edin Terzić Terzić began his coaching career in Dortmund's academy in 2010. He had a spell as interim first-team boss during the 2020/21 campaign, when he lead BVB to victory over Leipzig in the German Cup final before taking them within minutes of dethroning champions Bayern last season.

Key player: Julian Brandt One of the Bundesliga's most consistent and impressive performers for several years, German international Brandt joined Dortmund after five and a half seasons at Leverkusen. Now 27, the creative midfielder has completed four years at BVB, making at least 40 appearances every season and hitting double figures for goals last term. He wasn't fully fit in the last game against PSV but played a decisive role again in the quarter-finals.

Did you know? Dortmund are in the semi-finals for the first time since 2012/13, when Jürgen Klopp's men overcame a team they had met in the group stage (Real Madrid) to reach the final at Wembley.

Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)

UEFA coefficient ranking : 4 Group F : W2 D2 L2 F9 A8 (runners-up) Round of 16 : 4-1agg vs Real Sociedad Quarter-finals : 6-4agg vs Barcelona Semi-finals : vs Dortmund, 0-1(a) , 07/05(h) Last season : Round of 16 (L0-3agg vs Bayern) Best European Cup performance : Runners-up (2019/20) Top Fantasy Football points-scorer : Kylian Mbappé (59)

UEFA.com Paris reporter : Paris are through to the Champions League semi-finals for the third time in five seasons. After a group campaign which included a chastening 4-1 defeat at Newcastle, hopes of a deep run in this year's competition were tempered. Fast forward a few months, though, and following an expertly navigated round of 16 second leg against Real Sociedad and comeback triumph over Barcelona, Parisian optimism is rising. This outfit is tactically astute and growing in stature with each passing game.

Why Paris can win the competition It would be reductive to pin all hopes of a Paris win on Mbappé, but the side from the French capital possess arguably the best player in the world right now. Since arriving at the helm last summer, Luis Enrique has injected energy and youthful exuberance into the side. In Warren Zaïre-Emery, they boast one of the brightest midfield talents in the game, and collectively they're growing in maturity.

How Paris play   Luis Enrique has implemented a system predicated on tactical flexibility. Nominally a 4-3-3, their approach soon moulds into a 3-4-3 when in possession. Lucas Hernández's positional nous on the left of their back four allows Achraf Hakimi the freedom to operate as an auxiliary midfielder. Another common switch involves Vitinha, who often occupies the berth on the left of the midfield three, moving wide to allow danger man Mbappé to roam into the central spaces.

Coach: Luis Enrique The former Barcelona and Real Madrid player won nine trophies during a hugely successful three-year spell in charge of the Blaugrana, including two La Liga crowns and the 2014/15 Champions League. He led Spain to the UEFA EURO 2020 semi-finals and the 2021 Nations League final before succeeding Christophe Galtier at Paris last July.

Key player: Kylian Mbappé Mbappé burst onto the European stage with Monaco in 2016/17 and has never looked back. A FIFA World Cup winner with France in 2018, he became the youngest player to reach 30 Champions League goals in 2021/22 at the age of 22 years and 352 days, taking the record from then team-mate Lionel Messi.

UEFA.com Real Madrid reporter : Madrid remain fun to watch, and report on. But the nerve-shredding and sensory overload moments which were unheralded themes of their otherwise perfect group qualification became more notable in the round of 16 and quarter-finals. How much Madrid owed to their goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin for the elimination of Leipzig was increased hugely against City. The Ukrainian was stellar in most of both knockouts, especially his 24-karat display throughout the penalty shoot-out win in Manchester.

Why Madrid can win the competition Because they're Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti's side live and breathe the stress, the pride, the ambition, the Houdini acts and the majesty any club needs in order to win this trophy. Surely few share the same all-consuming desire to win this trophy. And if there are some candidates across Europe in better form right now, don't discard the big guns in this squad – Vinícius Júnior, Bellingham, Toni Kroos (plus perhaps the returning Thibaut Courtois and Éder Militão, according to the Italian coach) – hitting their stride at just the right time.

How Real Madrid play Vivaciously. And, latterly, pugnaciously. If you had to state Los Blancos' current predominant formation, it would be 4-4-2. Ancelotti has a treasury of midfield talent and, until injuries intervened, he wanted to field as much of it as feasible. But rather than viewing four in midfield as a defensive measure (Madrid had largely used 4-3-3 since Ancelotti returned), the key is that Bellingham, alternating between the left side without the ball and the tip of the midfield diamond when Madrid are in possession, can attack the box and score. They are arguably the best counter/transition team in Europe.

Coach: Carlo Ancelotti The man who led Madrid to La Décima in 2014 came back for a second spell in charge in summer 2021 and rewrote the history books by becoming the first coach to win the European Cup/Champions League four times. He also guided Madrid to the Liga title in 2021/22, making him the first coach to win championships in Italy, England, France, Germany and Spain.

Key player: Jude Bellingham The England international's move to Madrid was one of the most eye-catching of the summer, and after inheriting Zinédine Zidane's iconic No5 shirt, big things were expected of one of European football's most talented midfielders at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Even while, by his own admission, coping with difficult shoulder and ankle problems, the young Englishman has continued to astonish with his goals, assists, will to win and thunderous love-affair with the Madrid supporters.

Did you know? Madrid are competing in a record 33rd European Cup/Champions League semi-final. This is their 17th semi-final in the Champions League era, which is also a record.

Trail running shoes are the most popular footwear on-trail these days, which may lead you to think traditional hiking boots are on the way out. Our big test this year suggests something different: Most of the 41 models we tested proved emphatically that proper hiking boots and shoes make backpacking easier and more comfortable, protect our feet and ankles, and stick to roots, rocks, and dirt.

But the push to go fast does permeate the entire market these days, which is great. It means lighter weights, a nimbler feel, and smoother striding, no matter the style of boot. The very best hiking shoes and boots for men—the ones that made this list—will help you walk with less effort, leaving you more energy to go further and faster while savoring the journey along the way.

Saucony Ultra Ridge GTX

Editors’ Choice

Saucony ultra ridge gtx.

$190 at Amazon $190 at Running Warehouse

Weight: 12.6 oz (men’s) / 11 oz (women’s) Sizes: 7-15 (men’s) / 5-12 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Lightweight ⊕ Springy trail runner fit and feel ⊗ Lacks backpacking support

Trail runner-based boots tend to skew in one direction or the other—either they’re too light to support heavy loads, but feel great at speed, or they’re too overbuilt to move fast. One of the lightest high-top boots we’ve ever tried, the Ultra Ridge GTX might just be the first fusion to hit the bullseye. “It’s as comfortable as the most comfortable running shoe, but with the ankle support of a light boot,” gushed tester Patrick Lowkes after a 17-mile hike and run through New York’s Tongue Mountain Range. A Pebax-based foam insert in the midsole—the same kind used in bouncy, marathon-racing super shoes—is remarkably comfortable and lively-feeling underfoot.

It never felt squishy or unstable thanks to a firmer EVA frame below and around the insert and a lightly padded high-top that provides lateral support. It excels over a variety of surfaces: an unobtrusive rock plate prevents bruising while a grippy, durable, chevron-studded outsole digs into mucky and slippery surfaces. Testing them through a soggy New England summer, Lowkes says the Gore-Tex liner didn’t overheat in humid, 75-degree weather, deflected all-day rain, and emerged from a four-inch-deep mud puddle unsodden.

And there’s year-round utility, too. Outside’s senior running editor, Jonathan Beverly, found there was enough ankle height to keep snow and slush from spilling over the top. Backpackers who kept their weight under 30 pounds loved the Ultra Ridge GTX, but the soft upper cuff doesn’t offer enough support for heavier loads. For trail runners headed into crap weather, the boot-averse, and anyone else who ranks weight and spring above all else, the Ultra Ridge GTX is the most comfortable and speedy hiker we’ve tried.

Lowa Trek Evo GTX Mid

Best for Backpacking

Lowa trek evo gtx mid ($340).

$340 at Lowa Weight: 1.4 lbs (men’s) / 1 lb (women’s) Sizes: 7.5-14 (men’s) / 5-10.5 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Excellent grip ⊕ Supportive ⊗ Expensive

Lowa calls the Trek Evo a fastpacking boot, but our testers swear its sweet spot is backpacking. It’s certainly energetic enough for moving quickly down the trail: For a six-inch-tall hiker, it’s relatively lightweight, thanks to an all-synthetic upper with just a thin TPU film for toe and heel protection. (Despite the lightweight construction, however, our sample still looks new after nearly 100-miles of testing.) Cutouts in the tongue and heel enhance the forward flex.

Even more impressive? As testers added pounds to their pack, the boots never wavered. The TPU midsole wrapped around the sides of the foot and worked with stiffer synthetic panels on the upper to cradle and support the ankle, while three open eyelets allowed micro adjustments. And the Vibram Rock Trac outsole provided reliable grip on a variety of surfaces, including rock edging and smearing. Climbing Vancouver Island’s Victoria Peak with a 30-pound pack, the boots provided a stable platform for mountain guide Bill Phipps. “They made me feel more confident, especially carrying a heavy load,” he says.

Meindl Eurolight Hunter Uninsulated

Best for Carrying Heavy Loads

Meindl eurolight hunter uninsulated.

$295 at Meindl

Weight: 1.5 lbs (unisex) Sizes: 7-14 in D width, 8-14 in EE

Pros and Cons ⊕ Weatherproof ⊕ Off-trail performance ⊗ Tall and heavy

As the name suggests, Meindl designed these 9-inch-tall boots for hunting— which means they’re stellar for heavy loads and bushwacking. After plodding along logging roads, rolling down trails, and scrambling up steep hillsides, our testers say the Eurolight Hunters stand out in how nimble they feel for such a burly boot. The waxed, full-grain Nubuck leather upper with eight lace eyelets reaches well above the ankle, and a polyurethane midsole creates a stable base to carry more than 50 pounds.

Despite all that stability, the Eurolight Hunter isn’t particularly stiff—cutouts in the leather along the tongue and in the achilles area and gusseting allow for more flex and fluid movement. They required only a couple of day hikes to break in and were easy to pull on and take off, says JF Marleau, a sea kayak guide who tested them in the B.C. Coast Range while hiking and hunting. Bashing around off trail, the outsole’s deep round lugs and sharp edges provided excellent grip and stability in a variety of on- and off-trail surfaces.

Even more impressive was the Gore-Tex waterproof-breathable liner. While the all-leather upper got sweaty in temperatures above 65 degrees or when going hard, this boot was impermeable. “It was raining, and I had to cross many creeks,” says Marleau. “At the end of the day, my feet were dry and happy.”

Zamberlan Salathe Trek GTX

Best for Scrambling

Zamberlan salathe trek gtx.

$330 at REI

Weight: 1.1 lbs (unisex) Sizes: 7.5-13 (unisex)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Grippy ⊕ Waterproof ⊕ Durable ⊗ Expensive

Zamberlan’s Salathe Trek GTX is the new, mid-cut big brother of the popular Salathe approach shoe. The brand kept the foot-conforming suede upper (backed by a Gore-Tex liner), the to-the-toe lacing for a snug fit, a chunky Vibram outsole with smearing and edging sections, and a 360-degree rubber rand to protect against scree and rock gashes.

To handle pack weight and the uncertainties of route-finding, Zamberlan raised the ankle to six inches high with just a bit of foam for support. The extra height and waterproof membrane were appreciated in soggy conditions: The hydrophobic suede deflected melting snow while the Gore-Tex liner stood up to an all-day soaker. The liner also upped breathability, which was above average for an all-leather boot. (Testers noticed some clamminess above 65 degrees.)

To maintain walking flexibility, Zamberlan added a cutout at the ankle crease, which allows for natural motion in combination with a springy, lightweight, dual-density EVA midsole. “They felt light on my feet and springy on the ground,” says tester Jakob Schiller, who wore them scrambling in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. There’s enough boot here for gear-intensive trips and backpacking, unless you load up with more than 35 pounds on the back, when an ankle roll starts to feel inevitable.

Otherwise, Schiller says, what stands out is the quality: thick suede leather, durable rubber rands, high stitch counts, and a resoleable design: “They’re built to last.”

Salewa Puez Knit PTX

Best Mountain-to-City Hiking Shoe

Salewa puez knit ptx.

$240 at Salewa

Weight: 1 lb (men’s) / 13 oz (women’s) Sizes: 7-14 (men’s) / 6-11 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Out-of-box comfort ⊕ Versatility ⊗ Not stable enough for backpacking

The Puez Knit PTX Low is the rare hiker that can pull double-duty on a variety of trails and blend in seamlessly around town. For folks who care more about utility than looks, the upper is a knitted nylon and ripstop polyester that stretches to create a conforming fit. A waterproof-breathable membrane and full wrap rubber rand add water and scuff protection. A dual-density EVA midsole (partially made with hemp) adds stiffness and cushioning.

Wearing them right out of the box, tester John Waters climbed a steep, muddy trail, crossed hard-packed summer snow, and scrambled up rock slabs to snag a Vancouver Island peak without even the suggestion of a blister or hot spot. The outsole has big, chunky lugs covering most of the shoe, with a smearing area at the toe. It’s a versatile combo that shed mud and stuck to slick rocks. “They have amazing grip and awesome stability for a shoe,” Waters says, although their low cut and softness meant they were not up to overnight loads.

For around town, one tester found that the PTX Low’s were the perfect traveling shoe, cushioning miles of pavement wandering. Their earth-tone hues and multi-textured fabric helped them blend into the background for wearing into restaurants and shops post-adventure.

Oboz Katabatic Wind Low

Best for Speed Hiking

Oboz katabatic wind low.

$185 at REI $185 at Amazon

Weight: 12.3 oz (men’s) / 10 oz (women’s) Sizes: 8-14 (men’s) / 6-11 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Cushy ride ⊕ Good value ⊗ No weather protection ⊗ Built for light-loads

As comfortable as a pair of runners, the Katabatic Wind Lows are made for going fast. Oboz borrowed tech from running shoes, including a forked carbon-fiber plate, nitrogen-infused foam (which is springier and more cushioned than typical EVA foam), and a rockered outsole. “So cushioned I never got sore feet and found myself wearing them all the time,” says Alabama-based tester Seth Kromis. On heel strike, the combo seemed to absorb energy, roll to the toe, and accelerate the foot into the next stride, says Kromis.

The mesh upper—highly breathable but not weatherproof at all—has TPU inserts along the forefoot for durability and in the heel for a touch of rigidity. “It’s the perfect balance of support and bounce that made me feel like breaking into a run,” says Bozeman-based Allison Bodznick, who used the shoes as trail runners and city walkers. The chevron-shaped tread pattern, enhanced by the proprietary sticky rubber compound, provided solid traction on a variety of surfaces. “I could feel the treads sticking to the ground like frog feet,” says Bodznick. These shoes are built for speed and will last a lot longer than trail runners, but watch that pack weight: even on a day hike, the Katabatic Wind Lows started to feel unsupportive when loads exceeded 20 pounds.

Asolo Falcon Evo Jacquard GV

Best for Weekend Backpacking

Asolo falcon evo jacquard gv.

$240 at REI $240 at Asolo

Weight: 1.1 lbs (men’s and women’s) Sizes: 7.5-13 (men’s) / 6-10.5 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Lightweight ⊕ Waterproof ⊗ Poor grip in gravel

Don’t let the mid-height of these boots fool you—the Falcon Evo Jacquard GV’s are speed demons. For one, they’re lightweight, weighing eight ounces less than similarly-constructed hikers, thanks to a feathery woven polyester blend rather than suede or leather, and a coating of polyurethane along the base of the upper in lieu of a rubber rand. Webbing daisy chain eyelets and just a thin bit of foam cushioning around the heel and tongue cut even more weight.

The exception to the gram-counting? The midsole: A dual-density EVA that provides solid cushioning and stability. “They’re extremely comfortable,” says Lindsay Elms, who tested the boots over 30 miles of running, hiking, and mountain climbing around his home on Vancouver Island. “The boot responded well to quick changes in rough terrain and was malleable without being too soft.” There’s just enough structure for light backpacking and off-trail day hikes carrying up to 30 pounds.

Elms found the Vibram Megagrip outsole worked well in mud, dirt, and rock, but was less predictable in loose gravel and sand. The Gore-Tex liner, which rises nearly to the top of the boot, keeps feet dry when low cut shoes would be underwater. Durability is solid, but we don’t expect the lightweight material mix will hold up over the long term compared to the other mids in test—an acceptable tradeoff for such a lightweight boot.

Scarpa Moraine Low WP

Beefiest Low-Top

Scarpa moraine low wp.

$169 at Scarpa

Weight: 1.4 lbs (men’s) / 1.1 lbs (women’s) Sizes: 7-13 (men’s) / 6-10 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Stability ⊕ Built-in RECCO locator ⊗ Heavy

Opting for an airy low-top doesn’t necessarily mean less stability and protection than a tall boot. The Moraine Mid WP is prime example: In addition to dual-density EVA cushioning, Scarpa added a nylon medial shank and a stiff TPU counter to the shoe, which wraps high around the heel. The Moraines don’t have the bouncy feel of a speedier hiker—they feel quite stiff, in fact—but compensate by smoothing out uneven ground and providing a surprising amount of ankle support for a low-cut hiker.

“They have boot-sized stability without the clunk,” says category manager Ryan Stuart. “After hard hikes, the added protection left my legs feeling fresher.” He found the Moraines were most at home on day trips, but he didn’t wish for taller boots (the Moraine comes in a mid height as well) while hauling a 25 pound load into Cream Lake on Vancouver Island or route-finding in Coast Range scree. And on a rainy fall hike, the oiled nubuck leather and recycled mesh upper, backed by a waterproof-breathable membrane, kept his feet dry. After more than 50-miles of use, the Moraine Low WP’s showed no signs of wear.

How to Choose the Right Hiking Boots

The most important consideration for hiking boots is fit. They should feel snug (but not tight) everywhere except around the toes, where you want a little extra room to accommodate foot swelling and to keep piggies from hitting the end of the shoe on downhills. All footwear brands come with their own idiosyncrasies—finding the exact right fit will take trial-and-error. So it’s best to try boots on before purchasing. Ideally, go to a brick-and-mortar retailer later in the day when your feet have swelled a little. Bring your favorite socks and a footbed if you prefer an after-market one. Once you’ve found a pair that seems to fit, resist the urge to hit the trail right away. Instead, wear them around the house for a few hours. This will give you an early sense of any issues while retaining the option of returning them.

Hiking Style

Before you start trying pairs on, think about the type of hiking you’ll be doing. For light and fast hiking, a lower cut and softer, more flexible midsole is preferable. For heavy pack loads or mountainous terrain, an above-the-ankle boot and stiffer midsole may work better. These burlier boots often have shanks and heel counters, which add even more rigidity and support. Many boots and trail runners also come with a rock plate for protection from bruising on sharp trail protrusions.

Environment

Finally, focus on trail conditions and environment. For rainy or wet trails, a waterproof membrane will keep your feet dry. For a dedicated summer hiker or for hot and dry conditions, a mesh boot will breathe considerably better and dry out quickly. Turn the boot over and look at the outsole pattern. Most lug patterns offer versatile grip, but in general, wet trails benefit from a deeper and wider lug pattern, which digs into and sheds mud better. A sharp inside edge and lug-less smearing zone around the toe help with scrambling on rock and slabs.

  • Number of products: 41
  • Number of miles hiked: Pushing 700
  • Number of peaks climbed: 23

Mostly we just let our testers do what they do best: walk. We called in 41 different hiking boots and shoes and handed them out to 17 testers with instructions to put on some serious miles. They took short hikes and 30-mile backpacking trips, on-trail and off. They scrambled up peaks and down canyons, logging more than 700 miles in total. As they trekked along, we asked them to consider everything from fit to grip, cushioning to stability. Because pack weight can influence all these variables, we had them hike with both light loads and heavy packs. And to understand how boots and shoes performed in different weather conditions and environments, we spread testers and samples across the continent, from coastal British Columbia to New England’s windy summits.

Meet Our Lead Testers

Ryan Stuart has been lacing up for more than 30 years. Growing up in Alberta, Canada, he started hiking as a teenager on the world class trails of Banff National Park, before moving on to the coastal hikes and lonely mountain trails of Vancouver Island, where he now lives. His hiking resume spans the world, from Australia to Ireland, northern Canada to the U.S. southwest.

Lindsay Elms was running ultra races and knocking off Fastest Known Times long before they were trendy. Originally from New Zealand, he’s lived on Vancouver Island for more than 30 years. He reckons he logged more than 50 hours of trail time testing hiking boots this year.

Podcaster and photographer Adam Sauerwein (@mradamx) lives out of his van, which makes it easy for him to do a lot of hiking. Like a lot. The host of The Pursuit podcast, he estimates he trekked more than 250 miles in two months of testing, mostly in upstate New York, but also in Pennsylvania and Arizona.

Youssouf Mondoha Assoumani, chair of the African Union permanent representatives' committee, speaking in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday.

African and Caribbean nations agree move to seek reparations for slavery

African Union and Caricom members establish global reparations fund and call for formal apologies from European nations

A global movement to seek reparations for slavery has been forged during a summit in Ghana this week, with the African Union partnering with Caribbean countries to form a “united front” to persuade European nations to pay for “historical mass crimes”.

The partnership between the 55-member African Union and the Caribbean Community (Caricom) of 20 countries will aim to intensify pressure on former slave-owning nations to engage with the reparations movement.

Delegates also announced the establishment of a global fund based in Africa aiming to accelerate the campaign.

A draft proclamation circulated at the end of the four-day conference did not specify what form the reparations should take but announced that the African Union would explore “litigation options” and work with the United Nations to assess “whether acts of enslavement against Africans constituted serious violations of human rights at the time they were committed”. A finalised version of the document, the Accra proclamation, is expected to be released this weekend.

Opening the conference, Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, said: “The entire period of slavery meant that our progress, economically, culturally, and psychologically, was stifled. There are legions of stories of families who were torn apart … You cannot quantify the effects of such tragedies, but they need to be recognised.”

The “entire continent of Africa deserves a formal apology from the European nations involved in the slave trade”, he said, adding: “No amount of money can restore the damage caused by the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences. But surely, this is a matter that the world must confront and can no longer ignore.”

African Union delegates travelled to Barbados in July to begin discussions on how to work jointly with Caribbean nations.

Carla Barnett, Caricom’s secretary general, told the conference: “We are at an important inflection point in the global movement for reparatory justice.” She said it was critical to “speak with one voice to advance the call for reparations”.

The British Foreign Office said an official attended the conference “as part of standard diplomatic engagement”, but the UK government remains resistant to the concept of reparations.

Asked earlier this year by the Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy whether he would offer a “full and meaningful apology for our country’s role in slavery and colonialism” and commit to reparatory justice, the UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak, replied “no”, adding that while it was important to have an inclusive and tolerant society, “trying to unpick our history is not the right way forward and is not something we will focus our energies on”.

His approach is shared by the new foreign secretary, David Cameron, who travelled to Jamaica when he was prime minister in 2015 and acknowledged that slavery was “abhorrent in all its forms” but said he hoped “we can move on from this painful legacy”.

Advances have been made elsewhere. The German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, recently expressed “shame” for the colonial atrocities his country inflicted on Tanzania and in 2021 Germany officially acknowledged committing genocide during its occupation of Namibia and announced financial aid worth more than £940m. Last year the Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, offered a formal apology on behalf of the Dutch state for the Netherlands’ historical role in the slave trade, which he recognised as a crime against humanity.

On a trip to Nairobi last month, King Charles acknowledged the “abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence committed against Kenyans” during their independence struggle. However, he stopped short of making a formal apology .

Delegates said they felt buoyed by evidence of growing willingness to accept the need to pay reparations – citing Glasgow University’s promise to pay £20m to atone for its historical links to the transatlantic slave trade, the Church of England’s pledge of £100m to “address past wrongs” after its investment portfolio was found to have historic links to the transportation of enslaved people, and also the new Heirs of Slavery movement, formed by descendants of some of Britain’s wealthiest enslavers, which supports the call for reparatory justice.

Ribeiro-Addy, who attended the Ghana conference and who chairs an all-party parliamentary group on reparations, said it was significant to witness the African Union joining forces with Caricom. “It’s a huge step forward. They’ve sent a very clear message that this is something that can’t be ignored any more,” she said.

David Comissiong, Barbados’s ambassador to Caricom and deputy chair of the country’s national taskforce on reparations, said: “I think everybody felt they were experiencing something very historic; people feel encouraged by the amount of work that has been done to create a global reparations movement.”

Delegates visited Elmina Castle on Friday, a major European slave-trading post in Ghana where enslaved people were held before boarding ships to the Caribbean, Brazil and North America. At least 12 million Africans were forcefully taken by European nations between the 16th and the 19th century and enslaved on plantations.

Caricom’s 10-point plan for reparatory justice asks for a full formal apology, debt cancellation, and for former colonial powers to invest in countries’ health and education systems. The recent Brattle report commissioned by the University of the West Indies estimated the UK owed £18.8tn in compensation to Caribbean islands for hundreds of years of exploitation.

The Who Rolls Out First 2023 European Dates

the who tour europe 2023
