Description.

Looking for a way to make your listings stand out? Zillow Interactive Floor Plans and 3D Home® Tours are a free, easy and effective way to help you boost your listings and win more customers. In fact, listings with a Zillow Interactive Floor Plan or 3D Home Tour got twice as many views and sold, on average, 10% faster than listings without. - Free and easy to use: Unlike some other virtual tour options, the app is free, comes with the option to create a floor plan, easy for anyone to use and a great way to let people tour and experience a home virtually. - Stand out: Listings with an Interactive Floor Plan or 3D Home Tour get specialized placement on Zillow and are supported by dedicated emails to prospective buyers. - Reach more buyers & renters: Your Zillow Interactive Floor Plan or 3D Home Tour is automatically posted to your listing on Zillow, Trulia, and Redfin. You can also share them anywhere, including your website, the MLS and social media. Use your iPhone® camera (iPhone 7 or higher required) or connect a supported 360° camera from Insta360 (X2, X3, and One RS 1-inch 360 edition) or Ricoh Theta (Z1, X, SC2, V) to capture panoramas, then let the app automatically build your interactive floor plan and virtual tour.

Latest Update

Latest update is awful to the point of unusable. Responses to all user inputs on iPad while connected to Theta Z1 take ridiculously long... 15 to 30 seconds. I will not be using the Zillow app until this is resolved but rather upload 3D tours to other platforms. Disappointing!

Developer Response ,

We’d like to hear more about your experience – would you mind sending a few additional details to [email protected]?
Putting together in interactive tour with just an iPhone (or a 360° cam and tripod for even better results) in just about an hour is totally possible. Once I link two rooms why not have the app automatically create an editable link back by default..? I also think that being able to add 3D-labels to objects would be great (although placing them correctly in 3D space might be a challenge). Still not sure how several panos within one room/area are supposed work when it comes to linking..? Also, none of the examples appear to demonstrate the 2D floor plan created with markers, why..? I also don’t understand why adding a pano after the fact destroys all links, seems unnecessary. But all that said, great offering for free!

They aren’t progressing

This app was hard to deal with from the very beginning. It’s almost like they didn’t want to beta test before launching. Now those bugs are out, but here is why my rating is low... 1) I had to buy a used ipad because they don’t support Samsung even though Samsung is the most popular phone brand at 20% of the market and apple only at 14. 2) the user can’t edit paths when the tour is complete. Other apps allow me to edit the paths myself. Since Zillow doesn’t know where some rooms lead, you run into dead ends A LOT. 3) They aren’t improving these things, yet they also don’t allow you to embed 360 tours from other brands so you are stuck using a subpar app. 4) I have been using them since the start and had my “Zillow certification” status for 3 or 4 years. even though I am the same owner of a different company, I am forced to reapply for the cert again AND now instead of just uploading videos, they changed their rules to require 360 uploads. Why require something when people sometimes prefer not to use your app for it? The only reason I use this app is because about half of my agents want these tours on Zillow as well
Hi MedicLamb, thank you for your thoughtful feedback. We appreciate to hear from you. And we have good news, you can edit paths (we call them arrows) - find more information here: https://www.zillow.com/marketing/your-3d-home-dashboard/ . We are sorry you had a subpar experience with your certification - please reach out to [email protected], we will be happy to be of assistance.

The 6 Best 360-Virtual Home Tour Platforms for Real Estate

More than ever, 360 virtual home tours are critical, especially as COVID has hit pause on public open houses. As a real estate agent, in 2020, you have to adopt 360 virtual home tours, along with your professional property photos and videos. These 3D home tours offer prospective home buyers a detailed 360 experience of each room, and allows them to walk from room-to-room, all from the comfort and safety of their own home. By offering these immersive home experiences, it also allows you, as the agent, to save time by only providing in-person home showings to more serious prospective buyers.

These days, there are countless virtual tour software options, but we’re going to focus our list on platforms that meet certain criteria. Each of the options we detail below must be:

  • primarily targeted to real estate
  • relatively easy to use
  • embeddable on any website

This shortlist of requirements filter out a lot of the virtual tour software in the market that has features, complexity, and pricing that are more targeted to architectural, industrial, commercial, and retail applications.

When choosing the right 360 virtual tour platform for you, you’ll want to keep in mind some common features these platforms might have:

  • This lets you create clickable spots in the room to show more information or move to different parts of the room
  • This lets you either create or upload floorplans so the viewer can navigate to different rooms in the property
  • Some of the more advanced options create a “dollhouse” 3D rendering of your property based on the 360 scans of the rooms
  • This lets you customize the virtual tour with your custom logo and brand
  • This lets you have music accompany your virtual tour
  • This lets the viewer “play” through a walk-through of the property
  • This lets the viewer navigate to various rooms by clicking on the room thumbnails
  • Some platforms require you to put the tour together using the app and camera while you’re capturing the images. Other platforms let you create a virtual tour by uploading existing panoramic images you’ve already taken using any 360 camera outputting standard panoramic file formats.

Without further ado, here are the 6 top 360-virtual home tour platforms for real estate, and an embedded sample virtual home tour from each platform.

Method 1: Google Tour Creator

Method 2: zillow 3d home tours.

Technology is one of the most integral parts of nearly every type of business. For real estate agents, this is no different. Adapting and staying up-to-date with the newest technology trends is one of the most important things a real estate agent can do to remain competitive and set themselves apart. Real estate agents must adopt the newest trend to emerge , 360° virtual real estate tours.

What Is a 360 Virtual Real Estate Tour?

A virtual 360° real estate tour or a VR (virtual reality) tour is a simulation of existing real estate using a sequence of videos or still 360° photos. A virtual tour may also include additional multimedia elements such as audio, text, or graphic overlays.

In this post, we will take a look at creating 360 degree video for real estate listings.

What You'll Need to Get Started

Google & zillow account.

You will need a Google account with access to Google Tour Creator and a Zillow account to register for Zillow 3d Homes .

360° Camera for SmartPhone (Optional)

Follow these 6 steps to make your first 360° virtual real estate tour with Google Tour Creator.

Step 1: Take Your 360° Photos

Follow the directions on your smartphone camera attachment or take a panoramic photo with your iPhone or Android. You should end up with photos that look similar to the following:

360° Photo of Kitchen

You may also want to take standard photos of fixtures, lighting, or any other elements in the home or property that you want to show buyers and sellers. This will come in handy later when you want to add to or improve your VR tour.

Finally, organize your photos in an easy-to-locate folder on your desktop or laptop.

Step 2: Open Up Tour Creator and Create a New Tour

Login to your Google Account and open up Google VR Tour Creator and click on 'Get Started'. Next, click on "New Tour".

Once you have created your tour, you will be asked to name your tour and add a cover photo and a description. Name your tour with the address or property name that you will be showing, but don't be overly descriptive. The cover photo should be well-lit, inviting, and look professional. Remember, every photo going into your tour should be a representation of you and your business.

Create a Tour in Google VR

Step 3: Create Your First VR Scene

Once you have created your first tour and provided a name, description, and cover photo, you will be prompted to add your first scene. Next, click 'Upload' and locate the folder where you saved your 360° photos. Drag and drop the photo you would like to use for your first scene.

Create Your First VR Scene

Once you have uploaded your image, you will have the ability to rotate it or position it how you would like. Click 'Add Scene' below your image and proceed.

Step 4: Edit Your Scene

Once you have finished creating your first scene, you will be able to edit and provide additional information about your 360° VR photo. Listed below are the items you will be able to modify.

  • Title : E.g. Kitchen, Living Room, etc.
  • Location : Address of the property)
  • Description : A full description of the photo
  • Starting View : Where in the image do you want your scene to start
  • Credits : Provide attribution if someone else took the photo.

Edit Your VR Scene

Step 5: Add Audio, Narration, and Points of Interest (Optional)

After creating your scenes, you can go back through and spice up your VR tour. In each scene, you have the option to add additional ambient audio, narration, and points of interest.

Narration is an excellent way to add a personal touch to your VR tour and can help provide essential information to your real estate clients. On your iPhone, open up your Voice Memos app or on Android download the Smart Recorder app. For each scene, create a short, but descriptive narration of what your viewers are looking at. Once you are finished, save your MP3 file, click the narration icon at the bottom of your scene, and upload your file.

Points of Interest

If you would like to highlight any fixtures, lighting, or additional elements in your scene, you may want to have a few 'points of interest'. To add a point of interest, first start by clicking 'Add Point of Interest' at the bottom of your scenes' information panel. You will have the ability to add narration or an image. Once you have added your point of interest, adjust where you would like to place it in the scene inside the preview area. This will allow your viewers to click on the point of interest as they progress through and learn more about that element in virtual reality.

Step 6: Save and Publish Your Tour

Once you have finished creating your scene, click 'Publish' at the top. You will be asked whether you want to make your scene private or public. After publishing your scene, click on the 'copy link' icon. You will now be able to share this link on Facebook , Twitter , or Google Expeditions . You can also paste this link in an email and share it directly with your clients!

Save and Publish Your Tour

Final Home Tour Using Google Tour Creator

How To Tour a House Today: Tips To Make the Most of Virtual or In-Person Showings

Touring a house is like going on a first date: It’s your chance to get a sense of whether this home is the one. Can you envision baking cookies in that kitchen, or cracking a beer on that back deck?

But in this day and age, with so many houses to see and so little time before they get snapped up, the prospect of finding this dream home in the real estate haystack can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Add in the coronavirus pandemic, and the idea of checking out houses all around town might feel unsafe, too.

But here’s the good news: The rules on how to tour a house have changed in ways that can save time, lower your exposure to COVID-19, and curb your workload and stress levels, too. Here’s what you need to know to ace your house-hunting game for the modern day.

How to schedule a home tour

Most home buyers start their house hunt online—that’s a given. But once you spot a home you love, what’s next?

In the olden days of real estate, a home tour would kick off with several rounds of phone/email tag. You’d call your real estate agent, who would then contact the home’s listing agent, and once they’d talked you’d get looped in to when you can finally see the house. Talk about complicated! And that’s for just one house; most home buyers are juggling multiple home tours.

But today, the process is much simpler. For one, many real estate listings have a button you can click on to learn more about a property, sans the annoying phone games. On some listings, you can schedule a tour simply by clicking on your preferred day and time to visit. (See the Schedule a Tour  option on the right side of the sample listing below.)

In short, the process of scheduling a tour can now happen in a few seconds, no harder than ordering lunch on Seamless. After you submit your information, you’ll be assigned a local real estate agent, who will reach out to you directly to confirm your tour time and format. (More on your options there next.)

(Realtor.com)

Should I schedule a virtual tour or visit in person?

It wasn’t long ago when the only way to tour a house would be to visit in person. But today, you also have the option to take a virtual tour. You just schedule a tour as you usually would, but request a virtual home showing where a real estate agent shows you around the house via a live video stream on Google Hangouts, FaceTime, Zoom, or other app.

So should you opt for a virtual tour, or go for the real thing? According to many real estate experts, a virtual tour is the faster, easier, and safest place to start. While buying a home “sight unseen” as they say is a risky move few are willing to take (although it is done now more than ever), virtual tours are still a great way to whittle down your options and spend less time running around town.

“Virtual tours can act as a clearinghouse for buyers to narrow down their search,” says Jack Smith , a real estate agent with Shorewest Realtors in Milwaukee. From there, if you like what you see, you can proceed to an in-person tour to get a closer look.

What to look for on a home tour

Whether you’re conducting a virtual or in-person tour, it’s important to get to know every nook and cranny of the property. Breezing from room to room is not enough—particularly if you’re doing a remote tour where small details might be out of view.

As such, you’ll want to check out some less obvious features to make sure the house is in good shape. Here are some areas to home in on that many buyers might miss:

  • The HVAC and hot water systems:  The age and quality of these big-ticket systems can make or break your budget, so while they’re not quite as fun as that gigantic kitchen island or the bonus room above the garage, they should be top priorities during your tour, even if you plan to hire an experienced home inspector.
  • The exterior:  Don’t limit your tour to the house itself. Be sure to check out the garage, front and back yards, and any structures on the property such as swimming pools or gardening sheds.
  • The neighborhood at large: You’re not just buying a home, but the neighborhood. Try to see the homes surrounding the one for sale to get a sense of what your life there would be like. Tons of traffic whizzing by might be a deterrent if you have kids or a dog; nearby restaurants and bars might be nice but will add to ambient noise. To get to know this area better, check out local neighborhood apps like Nextdoor.com.

What role does a real estate agent play in a home tour?

A real estate agent can serve as an excellent sounding board when touring a house. Plus, if you’re conducting a virtual tour, your agent may be able to visit the property on your behalf and answer any lingering questions you have, says Tony Mariotti , a real estate agent with RubyHome in Los Angeles.

“Buyers have asked us to check the number of electrical outlets and data ports in a room they intend to use as an office,” Mariotti says. “We’ve also measured and ‘reality checked’ rooms that looked big in listing photos due to wide-angle lenses.”

What to ask when touring houses

During a home tour, you’ll want to delve deeper by asking your real estate agent questions about the house. Here are some topics to hit.

  • How old is the home? How old are the various systems and structural elements, like the roof and the water heater?
  • Has any renovation work been done? If so, were the proper permits pulled and can I see them? Was the work performed by a licensed contractor, electrician, plumber, etc.?
  • Are there any previous insurance claims that could affect insurability? Are there any special insurance policies required for the home?
  • What were the average costs of utilities (water, electric, gas, sewer, and trash) over the past 12 months?
  • What is the home’s listing history, including any price reductions or contracts that fell through? Why did the seller drop the price? Why did the home fall out of contract?
  • Are there homeowners association fees? If so, what do they cover? How are the fees billed?

How home buyers can make the most out of touring homes

When touring bunches of homes, it can be hard to remember which house had that spa bathroom or sunroom you adored. To keep one home tour from blurring with the next, keep a notebook where you can make notes and reminders to help keep all the homes straight. Give each house a name if that helps you, and be sure to highlight any important concerns that jumped out during the tour.

And lest you get swept up swooning over home features that won’t really matter that much in the long run (e.g., that outdoor hot tub is nice but not all that necessary), it may help to write down a list of your top house-hunting priorities.

“Buyers should have a list of their ‘must haves,’ their ‘like to haves,’ and things they are willing to compromise on in a property,” says Cara Ameer , a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in California and Florida.

Similar to dating, you should probably just accept that you can’t have it all, and that some flexibility will be needed if you want your house hunt to end anytime soon.

Best virtual tours that you can take without leaving home

Need to get out of the house and go on vacation, but finances, health, or other circumstances have you staying at home? Virtual tours are the next best thing. They allow you to travel to exotic locations, including space, without ever leaving home. Here are some of the best ways to take a staycation getaway using virtual tours.

Best virtual tour app for Android

Best virtual tour app for iphone, best virtual tours online, best virtual space tours, best virtual tours of us national parks, best way to take a random tour, best global virtual tour, best zoo virtual tours, best aquarium virtual tours, best fine art virtual tours, best history museum virtual tours, best virtual nature walks.

The Seven Wonders app allows you to travel to the seven wonders of the world from your phone. The app supports the use of Google Cardboard but you don’t have to use it. You can just hold your phone up to your face — as you move the phone, you’ll see a 360-degree view of whatever location you’re visiting.

With the Sites in VR app, you can take tours around the world using a virtual reality headset or just your phone or iPad. You can choose from cities or countries to visit, or you can go inside famous landmarks, like the pyramids. There are even space panoramas for a little out-of-this-world entertainment.

AirPano is a free site that allows you to wander beautiful locations all over the world. The best features of these virtual tours are choosing to take a helicopter view over the landscape or a walking trail through the area. The site also has articles about the location you are visiting and allows visitors to leave comments. If you really like a tour, you can choose to buy it as a download.

Sometimes you just want to leave this planet behind. That’s where virtual space tours come in handy. The Exoplanet Travel Bureau , powered by NASA, is here for you. You can choose an exoplanet and travel around its alien surface. Of course, the planets are artist renderings, since we haven’t actually traveled there yet, but they’re fascinating just the same. NASA at Home has many more space-themed virtual and augmented reality tours, too.

The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks is a Google project that lets you explore five different U.S. parks, including Florida’s Dry Tortugas, Hawaiian volcanoes, the Kenai Fjords in Alaska, New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns, and Utah’s Bryce Canyon. Each tour starts with a little history lesson about the area, and then you can dive into the 360-degree landscape. There are also audio tour guides that help you along your journey, explaining what you’re looking at and a little of its history.

Sometimes you don’t know where you want to go, and that’s OK. The Random Street View generator (powered by Google Maps ) is the answer. It will take you on a virtual stroll down a random street somewhere in the world. Be careful, though. Exploring random locations is a bit addicting. One minute you may be virtually walking down a highway in Michigan, and then with a click, you could be in an alleyway in Romania. The best part is that you get to see places that other virtual tour sites and apps don’t offer.

With Google Earth , you can go anywhere on our planet, from your hometown to the other side of the earth. You can use the website to take your journey, or use the app together with VR equipment to enhance your experience. Other than the awesome street views and ability to travel just about anywhere, you can also enhance Google Earth with your own videos and photos of places you have been in person.

If you’re an animal lover, there are many great virtual zoo exhibits that you can visit from your home. The San Diego Live Cams , for example, let you watch live footage of a wide range of animals, from baboons to penguins. Some other great animal cams can be found at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute , The Houston Zoo , and EarthCam .

There are plenty of ways to visit our fishy friends, too. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, The Georgia Aquarium, and The National Aquarium all have fantastic live webcams that allow you to watch sharks, jellyfish, stingrays, and much more.

When it comes to fine art, it’s hard to do better than a virtual tour of the Louvre . The website has a variety of tours you can take throughout the gallery, including The Galerie d’Apollon, Louvre’s Petite Galerie, and the east side of the Sully wing. When you’re finished at the Louvre, check out the virtual tours of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in South Korea , the Musée d’Orsay in Paris , and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil .

There are also virtual tours that can take you back in time, sort of. You can see amazing exhibits of curiosities from the past, like dinosaurs, Egyptian relics, Stone Age tools, and more at The Natural History Museum in London ,  The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History , and The British Museum .

Longing for a walk in the woods or a tour through habitats that rarely see a human? No problem. There are plenty of virtual tours to satisfy you. Conservation International, for example, has a 360-degree tour through the Amazon that is narrated by an indigenous guide. Other virtual hikes you might enjoy include a trip through the redwoods at Muir Woods National Park , a stroll through the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, and a tour of New Zealand’s Great Walks .

As rival Apple is rumored to be eyeing an entrance into the metaverse, Microsoft, an early proponent of mixed and augmented reality applications, is criticized for its blurry vision behind the company's own HoloLens strategy. While HoloLens notched big early wins, including scoring a U.S. Department of Defense contract, subsequent delays, project cancellations, and high-profile executive departures may have resulted in the death of the HoloLens 3. Still, despite a scathing profile by Business Insider, it appears that Microsoft remains, at least publicly, committed to its HoloLens endeavors for now. The company has gone on record to refute the publication's reporting that HoloLens 3 has been killed.

There are a number of factors that may be causing Microsoft to pivot from its early bet on HoloLens, but the Microsoft profile cited internal divisions and the lack of a unified strategy among the top reasons for concern. As a result of the chaos, it appears that the largest collateral damage to Microsoft's infighting is the cancellation of its next-generation HoloLens 3 hardware.

Actronika, a startup company known for its HD haptics technology has a futuristic new product. Expected to be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2022 is Skinetic, a haptic vest that should make virtual reality experiences feel a lot more realistic.

Skinetic works much as you'd expect. The wearable vest makes VR feel more immersive by bringing life-like sensations and touch-like experiences to areas of the body like the chest when paired with a compatible headset. As reported by Business Wire, the technology "works with 20 patented vibrotactile voice-coil motors, capable of generating a wide range of vibrations that cover 100% of human vibrotactile perception."

It seems that virtual reality may be about to become even more real than ever before -- all thanks to a new VR headset. Pimax, a company that manufactures VR equipment, announced the upcoming release of a new 12K QLED VR headset that will feature technologies such as eye tracking, full-body tracking, and refresh rates of up to 200Hz. The headset, dubbed Pimax Reality 12K QLED, is part of the company's venture into the metaverse and a step toward bringing true realism to using VR.

During today's Pimax Frontier event, the company's representatives talked at length about the goals behind the product -- naturalness, self-awareness, and freedom. Pimax wants to bring these qualities into virtual reality and the metaverse, allowing people from all over the world to interact and explore virtual worlds together. While VR technology already allows for some of that to happen, Pimax wants to take it to the next level with its new invention -- the Reality 12K QLED VR headset.

And it doesn’t get any easier after Week 1.

Only the top 50 after the FedEx St. Jude will advance to the BMW Championship at Castle Pines outside Denver (and qualify for next year's Signature Events), followed by the top 30 to the TOUR Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. There, at the home of Bobby Jones, someone will raise the FedExCup trophy.

Herewith, a quick primer on the players who reached the start of the PGA TOUR's three-week postseason.

Cricket: BCCI announces revised schedule for Indian men’s team 2024-25 home season

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, on Tuesday, announced an updated schedule for the Indian men’s cricket team’s home season.

The first T20I between India and Bangladesh, initially set to be held in Dharamsala on 6 October 2024, will now take place in Gwalior owing to upgrades and renovation work being carried out by the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in the dressing rooms.

The match in Gwalior marks the first-ever international fixture at the city’s new stadium – Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium – and the first since the historic India-South Africa ODI in 2010, where Sachin Tendulkar became the first male cricketer to score a double century in ODIs.

The Board further announced a swap in the venues of the first and second T20Is against England. Chennai, originally scheduled to host the first T20I will now host the second while Kolkata will host the opening T20I instead of the second, as announced earlier.

The dates for the first T20I and the second T20I remain the same. The venue change was necessitated following a request from Kolkata Police to the Cricket Association of Bengal regarding their prior Republic Day commitments and obligations.

India launches app to lower deaths caused by wild elephants

In this photo taken on July 17, 2019, a herd of wild elephants cross the National Highway-37 in the Kaziranga National Park in the India's northeast state of Assam.

The state of Assam, in northeastern India , has launched a mobile app that warns people of incoming herds of wild elephants in an effort to reduce violent encounters between humans and the land giants.

Clashes between humans and elephants are not uncommon in India, and have continued to rise in recent years. Elephants are turning more aggressive as their habitats and natural corridors get downsized to make way for urban development.

Developed by Aaranyak, an Assam-based conservation society, the app, named HaatiApp, tracks the movements of wild elephant herds and warns users if they get close to a collision.

Human-elephant conflicts in the state caused  more than 200 elephant deaths  and 400 human deaths from 2017 to 2022, the organization reported.

“Fueled by a combination of a population boom and poverty, man has expanded his frontiers, while animals have found their jungles shrinking.”

The app also lets residents report elephant sightings, injuries and deaths, as well as crop and property damages, and includes a form that victims can use to seek compensation from government entities in Aaranyak.

As the human population increases the natural habitat of the elephants get destroyed and they are forced to move in farming areas where causing damage to crops.

“The application will act as an early warning system about presence of wild elephants in the proximity of human settlements so as to help villagers avoid negative interface with wild elephants,” Aaranyak said in a  Facebook post  following the app’s launch this month.

Along with the launch of the app, Aaranyak also released a handbook with information on using solar-powered fences to keep elephants away from humans and property.

Assam is also known for its vast agriculture and numerous wildlife sanctuaries, where animals close to extinction such as the Asian elephant and Indian one-horned rhinoceros seek refuge.

The state has the second-largest elephant population — 5,700 — in India, after the southwestern state of Karnataka, home to more than 6,000 of them.

Boeing's new CEO is already showing that improving quality control is his top priority

  • Kelly Ortberg visited two key production facilities in his first few days in charge.
  • It signals his intent to revamp the planemaker's production quality and rebuild trust.
  • Ortberg also plans to be based near Seattle, Boeing's historic base and its manufacturing hub.

Insider Today

Boeing's new CEO is endeavoring to turn the company around, beginning by building a closer relationship with factory workers.

Kelly Ortberg took over the role on August 8 and spent his first day at the firm's 737 Max factory in Renton, Washington.

His first week also involved a trip to Wichita, Kansas, where he visited Spirit AeroSystems — the supplier Boeing last month agreed to repurchase for $4.7 billion.

These moves signal Ortberg's intent to revamp Boeing's production processes and quality control, which have marred the planemaker's reputation in recent years.

His predecessor, Dave Calhoun, was the second consecutive Boeing CEO due to a 737 Max crisis.

Last month, Boeing agreed to plead guilty to a charge of fraud conspiracy that was brought in relation to the 737 Max crashes in which 346 people died in 2018 and 2019.

The 737 Max, Boeing's flagship narrowbody jet, was grounded for 20 months — the longest grounding in history for a US airliner. Then-CEO Dennis Muilenburg was fired in 2019.

Calhoun also had to contend with Max issues when a door plug came off an Alaska Airlines 737 Max in January. In its preliminary report, the National Transportation Safety Board said the plane — delivered just 66 days earlier — left Boeing's factory missing key bolts designed to secure the door plug.

By appointing Ortberg, an aviation veteran with an engineering background, Boeing signaled that it would prioritize safety over profit. Calhoun, by contrast, had a background in finance.

After announcing his resignation in March, Calhoun said Boeing needed to "slow down" as it had a "bad habit" of being too focused on the speed of production.

Related stories

Ortberg plans to be based in Seattle , where Boeing was founded in 1916 and where it had its headquarters for over 80 years.

The planemaker moved its corporate headquarters to Chicago in 2001, and then to Virginia in 2022. That distance between Boeing's leadership and its factories has been criticized as the firm faced quality-control problems like in January's blowout.

In February, a Federal Aviation Administration investigation found "a disconnect between Boeing's senior management and other members of the organization on safety culture."

Later that month, The Seattle Times reported that Boeing's board shut down a shareholder's bid to move its headquarters back to Seattle .

"Because what we do is complex, I firmly believe that we need to get closer to the production lines and development programs across the company," Ortberg told employees last Thursday.

"Soon I'll be visiting many of our sites and I look forward to meeting with teammates around the world," he added.

There is still a way to go for Boeing to regain the trust of customers and officials. But with less than a week in charge, Ortberg has already started directing the planemaker down a new path.

Taylor Swift terrorist threat suspect confessed he intended to kill fans: Officials

Portrait of Brendan Morrow

A suspect accused of plotting a terrorist attack at Taylor Swift's concerts in Vienna intended to kill "as many people as possible" outside the stadium, according to officials.

The 19-year-old Austrian, who police arrested on Wednesday in connection with the foiled plot targeting a Swift show at Ernst Happel Stadium, had planned an attack on fans involving "bladed weapons as well as the construction of a bomb," according to a press release provided by the Vienna Federal Ministry of the Interior on Thursday.

During a search of the suspect's home, officials found "chemical substances, liquids, explosive and technical devices that could be used to manufacture explosives," said Franz Ruf, director general for public security. Bomb-making instructions and machetes were also found.

"He wanted to carry out an attack in the area outside the stadium, killing as many people as possible using the knives or even using the explosive devices he had made," according to national intelligence head Omar Haijawi-Pirchner.

Suspect in alleged Taylor Swift concert plot swore allegiance to ISIS, officials say

The suspect, who had recently quit his job and said he had "big plans," swore allegiance to ISIS and fully confessed to the charges against him, officials said.

Police also arrested a 17-year-old who was employed by a facility management company that would have been on duty during Swift's concert, officials said. A 15-year-old was detained and questioned by police, as well. Officials are not searching for any more suspects.

Taylor Swift's London shows not affected by Vienna cancellations, British police say

"There is currently no information that other concerts are subject to an explicit threat," Haijawi-Pirchner said.

British police said they did not believe the planned attack in Vienna would affect Swift's upcoming London shows .

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Swift for comment. The singer has not yet spoken publicly about the situation.

Taylor Swift terror plot linked to ISIS: Are they still a threat?

Swift canceled three of her Eras Tour shows in Vienna on Wednesday after news of the planned terrorist attack was revealed. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said Thursday the situation "was serious and remains serious" but that a "tragedy was averted."

Taylor Swift Vienna concert tickets to be automatically refunded

"We have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone's safety," Barracuda Music, the promoter for the Austrian shows, said. "All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days."

Ruf previously said that investigations identified "preparatory actions" and uncovered that the 19-year-old suspect "had a particular focus on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna."
