Purulia Tour Guide- Detailed Itinerary

Purulia Tour Guide

Purulia is one of the most visited places in West Bengal and this Purulia detailed tour guide will provide you with all the details you need to travel to Purulia. Purulia is also known as "Lal Matir Desh" which means land of red soil in Bengali. Purulia greets travelers with lush green meadows & forests, hills, lakes, and its natural beauty along with rich history. Not known to many Purulia has played an important role to carve the history of Bengal. Purulia is also rich in tribal culture and will keep you mesmerized with its rustic beauty.

When to Visit Purulia?

We traveled to Purulia after staying at home for more than 10 months in the month of December. Winters are the best time to visit Purulia. The tourist season starts in November and ends in March/April for Purulia.

The best time to visit Purulia is from early March when the Palash flowers blooms and Purulia transforms into a different beauty. Purulia is filled with Palash trees and when they bloom the entire land looks reddish in color due to the color of the flower. The trees look as if on fire with their red-colored flowers in full bloom.

How to reach Purulia?

What is the history of purulia.

There is hardly any written history of Purulia however one can find the mention of crushing the Varendra rebellion by Pala King Rampala in the poem Ramacharitram written by court poet Sandhyakar Nandi.

It is also believed that a major trade route passed through Purulia in the 10h -12th Century. One can find the influence of Jainism in Purulia. There was a huge settlement of Jains during this time Purulia and one can find Jain temples in Purulia. which were built in Oriya Deul Style Architecture. The temples were built of stone and bricks.

One of the important areas in the Purulia district is Garpanchkot. The name is derived from two words Gar ( Fort) & Panchkot ( Panchkot Raj). So basically the combination of two words became Garpanchkot which is the fort of the Panchkot kings. We have heard of the river Damodar, which gets its name from king Damodar Sekhar. He established Panchkot Raj during 90 AD along with the help of Sardards of Jhalda. He kept on expanding his kingdom. The name Panchkot comes from the 5 clans of the areas.

How many days are required to Travel to Purulia?

4 Days 3 Nights are enough to cover all major places of the Purulia district. However, if you have a lesser number of days you can choose and pick the places which you want to visit in Purulia.

Purulia Tour Guide - Detailed Itinerary of Purulia

Purulia has two major circuits for traveling. Circuits are basically routes which one can follow to travel. If you ask any tour agent regarding travel to Purulia they will talk about these circuits.

However, during my travel, I didn't follow any of these circuits and made my own route keeping in mind two important things :

a. Important places that depict the true history and natural beauty of Purulia

b. Places which can be covered in 1 day without getting too tiring and which can be covered in 5-6 hours

I created two routes which I followed for two days to cover Purulia and the majority of its tourist and not so touristy places.

Weathered With Time, But Purulia's Heritage Remains Timeless

A semi-submerged temple at Telkupi

I land in Purulia on a cold winter morning. I am visiting the district as part of a project funded by the West Bengal Wikimedians user group, which is affiliated with the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation, to document its heritage spots.

Purulia district, then known as Manbhum, was transferred to the Chhota Nagpur division of Bihar after the state's creation in 1912. In 1956, it became a part of West Bengal and was renamed Purulia. Though there is barely any written evidence of its ancient history, the most prominent record is that of King Rudra of the Shikhara dynasty who helped the Pala King Ramapala (11th-12th century) of Bengal to crush the Varendra rebellion. Ramapala's court poet, Sandhyakar Nandi, mentioned Rudra Shikhara in his epic poem Ramacharitam .

Brahmanical Temples With Jain Influence

Many scholars believe that a trade route passed through Purulia. The district's temples and deities are mainly Brahmanical, but have Jain influences at several places like Telkupi, Pakbirra, Deulghata, Budhpur and Suissa.

The brick temple of Para

Laden with my photography equipment, I set off to nearby Raghunathpur on the first day. It proves to be a fruitful excursion, with the deul temples of Banda and Para stealing the show. Their architecture has a clear Odisha influence. Para has three temples, the oldest being a stone structure that is 40-foot-high. Its walls are decorated with a variety of sculptures depicting social life and floral designs that have eroded over time. People from the Jain community are believed to have constructed the temple. Adjacent to it lies a 45-foot-tall brick temple, with exquisite designs on its walls. The third temple is much smaller and positioned between local houses.

The deul of Banda is perhaps one of the most attractive historical structures of Purulia. It has a single cell and a pillared stone mandapa in the front. The temple, which is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is 72 feet tall and has beautiful decoration on all four walls.

The temple at Cheliama

The villages Cheliama and Achkoda showcase aatchala -style temples with terracotta work on the walls. The temple at Cheliama contains terracotta panels that depict scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata . Many of the original panels have eroded and been distastefully replaced with modern terracotta ones by local authorities. The local historian Subash Ray shows me some medieval Jain and Hindu statues made of stone near the local Mahamaya temple.

Banda Deul is probably the most preserved stone temple of the district

Thankfully, there has been no restoration work attempted on the temple at Achkoda, which seems to be at least five centuries old. Its panels are smaller in size and some of them depict tribal life.

At Chara, there once stood seven deul temples but today only one remains, and, at Shankara and Haraktore, many age-old idols are stored inside modern temples. They have mostly weathered with time, though the idols at Haraktore are in better shape.

It is assumed that Telkupi was the erstwhile kingdom of Tailakampa. It once boasted the largest number of temples in Purulia, and the finest. However, the decision to build a dam across the Damodar near Panchet in 1957 proved catastrophic.

Temples Under Water

The river started to engulf the temples, and at present only two remain -- that too under water. No dedicated boat service is available, and travellers can only visit the sites if a local fisherman agrees to ferry them.

Then there is the Bir Stambha or Hero Stone, located outside one of the temples. It serves as a memorial commemorating the death of a hero in battle. Another gem is the presence of many shivalingams at Haraktore. These may actually be banalingams (naturally created shivalingams ).

The next day, I start with Deulghata near Ajodhya hills. There were once four massive deul temples here, of which only two stand today. Several stone idols have been found at Deulghata, which are now stored in a nearby temple. The place is desolate and deep in the forest, but comes alive during Dol Jatra and Tusu festivals. Surprisingly, neither the state archaeology department nor the ASI have undertaken the restoration of these structures.

The masks of Purulia are created by artisans from the small village of Chorida

The masks of Purulia are famous all over the country, and even the world. They, obviously, make great souvenirs. They are created by artisans from the small village of Chorida. I meet several of them and listen to them speak about their art in great detail. The Rasmancha, which is a historical structure at Begunkodor, is painted in a shocking blue and located inside a busy bazaar. It is a stark contrast to Deulghata, and the scenic drive from Chorida makes the visit all the more memorable.

It starts to rain heavily on the way to Suissa. I miss a few turns and decide to first visit Deuli, which is the farthest site. It has three very basic temples, one of which is in ruins, and, just as I am about to leave for Suissa, a local boy asks me whether I have paid a visit to the deity.

I am puzzled by his query as the two small temples seem to have no cells and the third is in ruins. To my surprise, he asks me to follow him and climbs over the ruins. I oblige and find a chamber inside the temple, accessed through a very small entrance from the upper portion. In a very Indiana Jones manner, I climb into the inner sanctum to find a massive Jain Tirthankar idol. Locals worship this idol as Lord Shiva.

Deity At Deuli Steals The Show

At the next stop, Harup, I only find a Shasan Devi idol under a tree. Shasan Devis are considered attending deities of Jain Tirthankars. And at Suissa, finally, I find a huge collection of black stone idols of various Tirthankars inside a modern temple. I realise if I had visited Suissa first, it would have worked better, since it is the deity at Deuli that truly steals the show.

My third day starts with a visit to Mahadev Berra (locally known as Anai Jambad), home to five beautiful Jain Tirthankar statues, worshipped inside a well-maintained Jain temple. Usually the religion doesn't allow non-followers to photograph the interiors, but I am lucky. The worshippers insist that I take photographs and record the rituals.

A four-armed idol similar to Kali at Kroshjuri

I reach Kroshjuri, a 55-km drive from Mahadev Berra. It is a state protected site, with some decorated door frames inside the temples, and motifs unlike any other in West Bengal. A four-armed idol similar to Kali, a ten-armed goddess and an idol seated on a lotus are all sights to behold. Though locals consider them Hindu idols, in all probability and as believed by many scholars, they are Jain deities. There is also a huge shivalingam inside one of the temple sanctums dating to the eighth or ninth century.

After a hurried lunch, I reach Budhpur. The premises of its temple complex are closed and I have to climb a nine-foot-tall wall to enter the compound. The shivalingam -style stone object that is worshipped as a deity inside the temple does not actually resemble one. I assume it is a part of a temple pillar. There are several stone idols scattered inside the complex, including two stone Ganesh idols, a Makara idol, and many hero stones. I even find a few shivalingams .

Tirthankara Statue. inside the main Deul of Deuli

Until recently, Pakbirra, which was my next stop, was an open-air museum with huge stone Jain deities placed around three deul temples. They appear unique compared to the other temples of Purulia. There is also an approximately eight-foot-tall Jain Tirthankar idol standing in the open. The colossal figure has a lotus on its pedestal. At present, all the artefacts are kept in a small museum. Among them, the deities depict almost all Jain Tirthankar forms.

I take a tea break after visiting Pakbirra. Officially, the tour is over and I have just enough time to reach the bus stand and catch my night ride home.

As I approach my destination, I realise there are plenty of undiscovered heritage sites I am yet to visit in the district. Well, there is always a next time.

People who live cities, prefer to visit this place flavoring its diversity.

Spending a couple of days at Purulia is a praiseworthy decision. Here are some attractions adds another value.

Offbeat travel is famous because of its culture as well. Jhumur is one of the traditional Purulia dance that depicts the histry and culture of Purulia.

Though originally jhumur is an Assamese dance, still it is famous in Purulia as well.

The Kurmi, Kumhaar, Rajwar, Ghatal, Hari, Muchi, and Dom artisan communities, Santhal, Munda, Oraon, Kharia, and Birhor tribal communities, are known for their love of jhumur music and dance.

Because it uses an ancient language, Jhumur is renowned for its lyrical and literary significance.

Throughout the year, various Jhumur songs are performed.

For instance, the songs Chaitali and Bhadauria are performed during the springtime month of Chaitra and Bhadra, respectively. Even now, many people enjoy the music of Jhumur.

If you love traditional dance, you will enjoy the ‘pata nach’.

A well-liked Purulia dancing style is pata naach.

It is customary to perform this dance with Bhaduria Jhumur songs in the month of Bhadra (the end of the monsoon).

The root of the term pata is pankti, which means line. A line of dancers does this dance.

The women of the village dance as their arms are linked. The males play dhamsa, madal, flute, etc., to accompany them.

Chhau Dance

The traditional folk dance “Chau” is the center of Purulia’s culture. It depicts the beauty of Purulia.

Every year many tourist wants to explore Purulia mainly for getting real flavor of Chhau dance.

Chhau dance is my personal favorite.

The uncommon masked dancers of chhau, symbolizing the local culture, are well-liked by the Santhals, Kumars, Mahatos, Kalindis, and Sahish groups.

This dance has become well-known worldwide because of the employment of stunning masks, a distinctive movement style, makeup, and vibrant costumes.

Due to the physical power and agility required for dance, many people view this discipline as a martial art.

The Chau dance is an essential component of Purulia’s ceremonies and celebrations. In the past, productions have mainly been based on mythological tales from the Ramayana, the Puranas, etc.

Still, today’s shows use contemporary issues like the Santhal revolt, the Kargil war, etc., as themes.

Garpanchkot

tourism of purulia

Garpanchkot is in the northeastern portion of the Purulia District, near the border with the districts of Burdwan and Jharkhand, at the foot of Panchakot (Panchet Hill).

A hilltop provides stunning, all-encompassing views of the Panchet dam’s control structure, the Damodar River, and the reservoir.

A visual pleasure is viewing the birds at Panchet Dam.

How to Get There: Visitors arriving by train should disembark at the Barakar or Asansol stations, where they may hire a trekker for the hour-long journey to Garpanchkot.

You can use a car to travel the distance by following National Highway 2. Turn left and take the route heading to Raghunathpur after passing Asansol.

The destination is a few kilometers away by way of the village path after getting to the Satbari stop.

Joychandi Pahar

Joychandi Pahar (Hill) is a popular destination for avid rock climbers, yet mostly undiscovered.

The hill bears Chandi Ma’s name (Goddess Chandi). On this hill’s summit is a modest shrine in her honor.

There are several tiny lakes nearby and an abandoned tower that thieves reportedly used in the past.

It might take a lot of work to ascend the 400 stairs to the summit.

The area has no water sources because it is so dry and desolate. Please bring a lot of water with you because the area is still quite hot and is far from the nearest village.

From Purulia to Raghunathpur, one must take a bus to get to this location.

There aren’t many places to stay, but the roadside eateries offer quick meals.

You can take tuk-tuks to the beginning of the trek.

You won’t find any public transportation here, so please arrange a time with the driver to be picked up.

One of the most well-liked travel spots in Purulia is Cheliama. It is well recognized for having a rich history and being an archaeologist and historian’s dream.

Around the town, there are still traces of 17th-century culture.

The sculptures and figures in the temples around the town serve as excellent representations of the ages’ architecture, artistic style, and cultural heritage.

In addition to this, the famed Radha-Govinda Temple in Cheliama draws a large number of visitors.

Due to its extensive history, Cheliama, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Purulia, is a historian and an archaeologist’s dream come true.

The 17th century’s modern civilization is still evident in the village.

The village’s status as a significant landmark in the past is attested to by the terracotta figurines and unique carvings surrounding the temples.

In addition, the famous Radha-Govinda Temple in Cheliama, which draws many visitors, serves as a focal point for the Bengali culture still present in modern times.

A well-liked tourist site, Para is also a community that is credited with bringing Islam to the east. You may find two pre-Muslim deuls in the area, one in harmony with the temple in Deulghat and the other from a later time.

They both stand out as excellent representations of the art and architecture of their respective eras.

One is reminded of the ancient ages by the inheritance structures.

The town of Para is a beautiful tourist destination and serves as a reminder of the arrival of Muslims in the east.

Two pre-Muslim deuls may be found in the area, one in harmony with the temple in Deulghat and the other from a later time.

Both are superb examples of the impressive architecture and great tastes used in bygone eras.

These artifacts are still beautiful despite being over a century old.

Since that time, this location has been known as Sita-Kunda.

On a Baisakhi full moon day, tribal people from nearby villages gather here to participate in the game of animal hunting.

They pursue tiny creatures like rabbits and jungle hens.

The state’s most western district has a tropical area of West Bengal called Purulia.

Purulia is spread across an area larger than 6,259 square kilometers; the region includes the localities of Bankura, Paschim Medinipur, Bardhaman, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ranchi, West Singhbhum, and East Singhbhum.

When visiting during the winter, visitors should pack enough warm clothing because the temperature lowers to 3 degrees Celsius in the evening and hovers about 5 to 6 degrees after dusk.

It is a deep dam. Visitors who are unable to swim should stay away.

If you go on a whole moon night, it is an enjoyable experience you will never forget.

It’s delightful to trek through the bush to a nearby tribal community or goes to a hilltop because of the lush vegetation there.

Duarsini is a little tribal community located in the Purulia district, around 13 kilometers from Burdwan.

The Dalma Hills’ scenic backdrop, complete with undulating hills and verdant vegetation, gives this community its allure.

Since the Dalma Forest is home to various animals, including bears, wolves, boars, and several known and unidentified bird species, nature lovers will particularly like this location.

Elephants occasionally emerge from the jungle and enter Duarsini.

Spending some peaceful time on the banks of the Satgurang River, which runs past Duarsini, is a lovely way to unwind and relax.

It is the ideal vacation if you’re sick of all the touristic and congested areas.

The air will reverberate with the rhythmic beats of modals (drums) at night.

One may find numerous tribal communities belonging to the Santhals, Shabaradh, Kheriya, and Munda tribes nearby.

Except for three cottages managed by the West Bengal Forest Department, this location lacks both power and lodging options. The dwellings have a rustic, tribal appearance.

Saheb Bandh

A 50-acre lake in Purulia called Saheb Bandh was built in the middle of the 19th century.

According to legend, prisoners excavated this spring of water during the British Raj at Colonel Tikley’s request.

Five years passed between the commencement of this procedure in 1843 and its conclusion.

These days, Saheb Bandh is regarded as a haven for migrating birds.

Birds go here throughout the migration season from Siberia, Balochistan, and various European locations.

Therefore, Saheb Bandh is a well-liked getaway for local birdwatchers.

Saheb Bandh, a 50-acre lake, is one of Purulia’s most mysterious sites.

In terms of the location’s history, it is thought to have been constructed in the middle of the 19th century.

Prisoners allegedly dug this water source at Colonel Tikley’s request.

In the year 1843, they began the procedure.

The construction of the water feature took five years.

Saheb Bandh, a stunning and captivating place, is a stopover point for migrating birds.

Surulia, a destination for eco-tourists and a favorite picnic spot for travelers, was created by the forest department.

The Eco Park, situated on the bank of the river Kangsabati and only 6 km from the main town, is very popular with tourists.

Inside, there is a deer park and a tourism cottage.

Witness Purulia Beauties in Different Way

Purulia is not a traditional tourist spot, rather it is one of the best offbeat tourist destinations in India. The magical beauty of Purulia is well known.

This location is ideal for tourists because of the verdant scenery and thick forests surrounded by imposing hills.

The earth’s atmosphere and seductive mountains enhance this mysterious land’s calm beauty. For city dwellers, it is a visual pleasure.

The surrounding nature is lavishly ornamented with red and green hues (red soil in Purulia). Here, the mountains are rough.

Plan your Ajodhya Hill tour around the area’s hills, abundant vegetation, and historical buildings and temples near the forest’s edge or along the mountain’s ridge.

Due to their lengthy history, numerous archaeological digs have been conducted here.

When Palash and Krishna Chura are in full bloom in the springtime, the area is enveloped in a rich shade of vermillion crimson.

With the spring, the Chota Nagpur plateau is completely covered in red, giving the impression that a wildfire is raging.

The addition of new blooms transforms the appearance of the natural world.

Nature and humans have a complex history of interaction.

Every Indian mythology has always portrayed nature as its center.

We are aware of the ancestors’ methods in their prayers to call upon the gods of nature.

Agni, the Fire God, is thought to have been a Palash blossom when he was born on earth.

Here, the monsoon arrives alone and announces itself by soaking the rural streets with sparkling raindrops.

This season’s vibe is so distinctive that it captivates travelers with its alluring attractiveness. Its beauty has the power to enchant poets.

The nature that has just received its first rain adds pure beauty to this location.

This area is well-known for its tribal inhabitants, mythological past, and old-world aroma.

Take no concern if you are unsure about seeing Purulia’s attractions.

The Chota Nagpur plateau includes West Bengal’s most western district.

This area exudes an addictive vibe.

Numerous folktales and mythological fables have been created to represent the history of this enchanting realm.

The native inhabitants of this area are the sons of the soil, and the soil itself bleeds red, has been traveled over by countless people, and bears silent witness to their presence.

My Final Thought

When you are looking for Purulia visiting places, this article may help you a lot. Purulia means nature covers itself in a brilliant hue of vermilion when this flower blooms.

Eminent writers and poets have written poetry about the mystic splendor of this land after being fascinated by its intoxicating beauty.

Follow us for additional details if you’re interested in seeing Purulia’s exotic beauty and exploring this mysterious place.

 পুরুলিয়াতে কি কি দেখার আছে?

The district of Purulia is filled with temples, dams, towering hills and other alluring and scenic tourist spots. Apart from enjoying the mesmerizing views and breathtaking beauty of this place, tourists can also indulge in different fun activities including boating, rock climbing, and others . The places to visit in Purulia make it a perfect getaway destination to get a break from the monotony of life and spend a few days in magical surroundings. The fresh air and natural beauty is sure to relieve you from stress.
