Are the travel plazas open Christmas Day?

I checked the Indiana Toll Road website ( https://www.indianatollroad.org/travel-information/#travelstops ) to find an answer to your question but was unsuccessful.

Any rest areas with a small fenced in area for dogs?

I love the website. So easy to know when the next rest area is located. You don’t really need a map if you just look at the mile markers.

Thanks for the comment. I’m not sure how many website visitors are aware of or understand the mile marker system. There is an article I posted on the site explaining the system but it is rarely seen or read. It would seem many just simply want their phone to tell them where the next rest area is.

At least 11 dead as deadly tornadoes devastate Texas town, blast Oklahoma camp ground

A t least 11 people, including two young kids, are dead after a powerful tornado barreled through rural Texas Saturday night and caused a crowded gas station where people were taking shelter to collapse — leaving an additional 80 people injured as officials warn the death toll is likely “going to go up.”

The tornado in Valley View — about 60 miles north of Dallas — was just one of several devastating twisters reported across the Lone Star State, Oklahoma and Arkansas. 

At least two people were also killed outside Tulsa, Oklahoma, and two others were killed in Boone County, Arkansas — bringing the death toll overnight to at least 11.

Cooke County Sheriff Ray Sappington confirmed seven people were killed in the severe overnight storm that struck a trailer park and the AP Travel Center, which includes as Shell gas station and restaurants south of town — injuring between 60 and 80 people taking shelter inside.

At least two children, a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old were among the dead, Sappington said Sunday morning, according to Fox 4 News. 

Dozens of panicked drivers had pulled into the gas station to get off the road during the dangerous weather, only to be caught directly in the path of the tornado.

Numerous people had to be rescued after being trapped inside, but everyone survived.

“I can also tell you that number is going to go up,” Sappington  told WFAA  of the death toll. “I don’t want to speculate and give you a number.”

Search-and-rescue efforts remain underway at the gas station and in a nearby neighborhood.

“It took some time to get back in there because of all the damage with the power lines, and trees were down. It was kind of a monumental task just to get back to where they were,” Sappington added.

The mobile home park was especially devastated by the twister.

“This took a major hit. There is not much left of it,” he said. 

Elsewhere, in Pryor, Oklahoma, outside Tulsa, least two people were killed and five others were injured,  News on 6 reported .

In Claremore, about 17 miles away, a tornado devetated the town and wrecked a KOA campground, though only minor injuries were reported there, according to the station.

In Texas, Sappington urged locals to stay away from the storm damage, noting numerous reports of downed power lines and gas leaks that could cause serious injury if encountered.

Still, the sheriff was confident in their ability to come back from the serious deadly storm.

“We’ll rebuild,” he said. “It’s Texas. We can rebuild property, and as horrible as this looks, in two or three months, it won’t look like this [then]. It’ll be better. But the loss of life is just tragic. It’s always tragic. That’s what hurts the most.”

Two children were also reported missing in Cooke County following the storm, Sappington said.

Forecasters had issued tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of both states Saturday, as heat records were broken over the long holiday weekend.

As the storm moved through the region it overturned motorhomes brought down powerlines and trees and made some roads completely inaccessible.

On Saturday night the National Weather Service’s office in Norman, Oklahoma, warned areas north of Oklahoma City to “take cover now!” In a follow-up post at 10:05 p.m., the agency noted the storms had left the area and were headed across north Texas.

By 10:24 p.m. the weather service office in Fort Worth began to warn of the storm moving through the region, issuing a severe thunderstorm warning with possible “golf-ball-sized hail.”

The Norman office had compared conditions Saturday to “ a gasoline-soaked brush pile” and forecasters warned storms would likely come with large hail, dangerous winds and tornadoes.

The storm system was expected to move east as Memorial Day weekend continues, bringing rain that could delay the Indianapolis 500 auto race Sunday and more severe storms in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky.

The risk of severe weather is expected to move into North Carolina and Virginia on Monday, forecasters said.

Presented by the Michigan City Zoological Society, this event includes an evening of brews, wine and hard ciders as well as full access to all exhibits within the zoo. This event is sold out.

The festival seeks to celebrate the art of brewing with a lineup of more than 50 renowned breweries pouring more than 150 brews. All net proceeds from the Grayslake Craft Beer Festival will be dedicated to providing college scholarships for area students.

Solstice Hop and Vine Fest: 6-9 p.m. June 15 at Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg. $50-$60. 847-985-2115; schaumburgparkfoundation.org/event/solstice-hop-vine-fest .

A fundraiser for the Schaumburg Park Foundation, the event has an ′80s theme and will include live music from the ′80s party-cover band The Breakfast Club, plus an ′80s costume contest. Your ticket includes food along with unlimited beer, wine, cider and seltzer samples. There will also be a silent auction, raffles and live music from local favorites The Crawpuppies.

Downtown Wheaton Craft Crawl: 2-5 p.m. June 29 in downtown Wheaton. $35. 630-682-0633; downtownwheaton.com/events .

Ticketholders get 10 4-oz. samples of craft brews, a souvenir tasting glass and a map of tasting locations and what they’re serving. The Wheaton Dad Band will provide the music.

Brew at the (Randall Oaks) Zoo: 5:30-8 p.m. July 6 at the Randall Oaks Zoo, 1180 N. Randall Road, West Dundee. $15-$40. 847-551-4312; dtpd.org/brew-at-the-zoo .

All proceeds go towards the care and habitats of the zoo’s animals. At this fundraiser, ticket holders will enjoy live music, lawn games, food for purchase and the zoo’s animals at night.

Naperville Ale Fest: 2-6 p.m. July 13 at the Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville. $60-$70. napervillealefest.com .

This long-running fest will feature more than 100 craft beers to sample as well as nosh from area food trucks, lawn games and live music. Tickets get you 18 3-ounce samples.

Look for the Christmas in July tent with craft Christmas ale, Cider Alley with hard ciders and the Milkshake IPA tent that features beers that taste like milkshakes.

Emmett’s BrewFest and Adult Big Wheel Race: 9:30 a.m.-11 p.m. July 20 at Emmett’s Brewing Company, 128 W. Main St., West Dundee. $40-$50. 847-428-4500; eventbrite.com ; search for Emmett’s BrewFest & Adult Big Wheel Race.

The inaugural BrewFest will feature seven craft breweries, food, live music and a car show. The jewel in the event is the Adult Big Wheel Race at 3 p.m.

One of the longest-running beer festivals in the Chicago area returns for year 17 with beers, ciders and seltzers from more than 60 breweries. Food from area restaurants will be available for purchase.

The Oak Park Micro Brew Review is also the largest zero-waste craft beer fest in the Midwest.

Valparaiso Brewski Fest: 4:30-10:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at Central Park Plaza, 68 Lafayette St., Valparaiso, Indiana. $10-$25. Brewskifest.org .

The fourth annual festival celebrates the beers of yore and yesteryear with a retro theme. Dress like your dad — think old beer shirts and hats. Admission gets you four beers, access to food trucks and live music from The Crawpuppies and Dead to Rights.

Memorial Day travel busiest in decades; what you need to know to tackle Chicago traffic

Memorial Day travel will be the busiest in two decades, and Chicagoans must plan for traffic delays on expressways and crowds at O'Hare International Airport. 

Triple A forecasts 43.8 million people nationwide will travel for the holiday, including 38.4 million by auto and 3.5 million by air. The rest will travel by bus, train, or even a cruise. In Illinois, about 2 million will travel, slightly higher than last year. That's not far off the record high of 2.2 million set in 2005. 

Experts say it will be the biggest Memorial Day holiday crunch in two decades as people have fully embraced post-COVID-19 travel.

Worst times to travel on Memorial Day

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, said drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers returning home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips peak.

For example, a trip from Chicago to Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon would take nearly 2.5 hours, an increase of 27% from regular travel times, according to INRIX.

Chicago travelers can also expect congested expressways heading to popular destinations in southwest Michigan.  

Historically, travel times on the Kennedy Expressway spike, as it is a main route to O'Hare Airport. This year, the express lanes from Ohio Street to the Edens are closed for construction, adding to the traffic congestion.

Worst spots for traffic

CBS 2 traffic reporter Kris Habermehl said the worst "pinch points" will be anywhere along long-term projects.

In addition to the Kennedy, that would include the Tri-State Tollway work zone between O'Hare and Ogden, I-80 from New Lenox to Minooka, I-80/94 from Hammond to Gary and the Indiana Toll Road, which all have lane reductions, lane shifts and reduced work zone speed limits.

"With the overall increase in traffic volume, narrowing down specific times to avoid has been getting harder," Habermehl said. "Typically, the Memorial Day getaway starts on Thursday afternoon, with the first rise in volume. Midday Friday begins the second peak, with a homebound bump late Monday."

I-65 will be very heavy, too, as race fans head to the Indianapolis 500, which is on Sunday. 

Will airports be crowded? 

This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005 when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post-9/11. 

Chicago will be no exception. According to the travel site Hopper, Chicago O'Hare has booked 801,000 departing seats over the weekend, with the busiest times between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.   

What is the average gas price?

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Illinois is $3.93, up a penny from last year.

In the Chicago metro area, it's much higher—$4.16—but that's four cents cheaper than last year. That means a one-tank trip  would save a driver about 60 cents for a 15-gallon tank.

Lake Shore Drive roadwork

The Chicago Department of Transportation is patching South DuSable Lake Shore Drive segments between Roosevelt Road and 31st Street in both northbound and southbound directions.  

Currently, southbound lane closures will be in effect. Two lanes will be closed from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. daily; three lanes will be closed during daytime working hours between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

In Grant Park, the Suenos Festival runs Saturday and Sunday  from noon to 10 p.m. and features more than 20 Reggaeton and Latin artists. 

Now in its third year, the fest borders Lake Shore Drive, Roosevelt Road, and Columbus Drive, with the main entrances near Buckingham Fountain.
