A Tourist’s Guide to Love is a romantic movie that follows a woman named Amanda, who heads to Vietnam where she's on a mission to decide whether her travel agency should purchase a smaller outpost there.

But, while there, she finds herself becoming interested in Sinh (Scott Ly), a tour guide 

The Netflix movie is partly based on screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue’s real-life experiences: She told Tudum : "This idea was based off of the time in my life when, right after college, my safe stable boyfriend unexpectedly broke up with me right as I was about to leave for a five-week trip to Vietnam.

"While I was in Vietnam I realized that that relationship, which was a good one, wasn't actually the best fit for me."

John was Amanda’s boyfriend of five years until he moves to Ohio and the couple break up. He's the third part of this complicated love triangle.

Missi Pyle as Mona

Mona is Amanda’s business partner and longtime friend, so she's a trusted figure when it comes to her professional and love life.

Quinn Trúc Trần as Anh

A new romantic comedy to check out on Netflix is  A Tourist’s Guide to Love . It’s a feel-good film telling the love story between a travel executive and a Vietnamese expat tour guide. If the movie’s plot has piqued your interest, just wait until you find out who’s in the cast!

The story follows Amanda Riley, an American travel executive, who after experiencing an unexpected breakup, decides to accept a work assignment taking her to Vietnam. While in Vietnam, Amanda’s job is to work undercover to learn about the tourist industry in the country. But she was not expecting to fall head over heels for free-spirited tour guide Sinh.

Rachael plays Amanda Riley, a travel executive who works for Tourista World Travel. Amanda thought her boyfriend of five years would be proposing to her only to find out he was breaking up with her “temporarily” and moving to Ohio. Heartbroken by the breakup, Amanda takes on a job assignment in Vietnam to take her mind off it not knowing she would be meeting her soulmate in the form of a tour guide there.

Rachael has been working as an actress since the late ’90s. She’s starred in the movies  The Baby-Sitters Club ,  She’s All That  and  Josie and the Pussycats . You might also recognize her from her roles in the films  Nancy Drew ,  A Midsummer Night’s Dream ,  Love, Guaranteed and  He’s All That .

Scott Ly as Sinh

Scott portrays the role of Sinh, a local tour guide in Vietnam who shows Amanda that adventure is often found off the beaten path. As Sinh shows Amanda around the country, they get to know one another and ultimately fall deeply in love.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love   is Scott’s first major film. He’s previously worked in television on shows such as  Criminal Minds , The Young and the Restless , Animal Kingdom and FBI: Most Wanted . Next, Scott will recur in HBO’s  The Sympathizer .

Missi Pyle as Mona

Missi plays Mona, Amanda’s boss at Tourista World Travel and close friend. Mona is very supportive of Amanda and only wants the best for her. That’s why when Amanda’s boyfriend breaks up with her, Mona suggests that Amanda go to Vietnam for work to take her mind off the breakup.

Missi has been working in the entertainment industry for quite some time. She’s known for her previous roles in the films  Galaxy Quest ,  Big Fish ,  Bringing Down the House , Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ,  Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay , Gone Girl  and  Ma . Besides acting, Missi has also worked as a singer. She and fellow actress Shawnee Smith created a country rock band called “Smith & Pyle.”

Ben Feldman as John

Ben plays John, Amanda’s boyfriend of five years who unexpectedly breaks up with her and moves to Ohio. Based on the trailer, it looks like John pops up in Vietnam hoping to win Amanda back. But who will Amanda ultimately choose: John or Sinh?

Ben is known for his roles in the films  The Perfect Man ,  Friday the 13th ,  Cloverfield  and  As Above ,  So Below . However, he’s best known for his role as Ron LaFlamme in the comedy series  Silicon Valley and his role as Jonah in Superstore .

Quinn Trúc Trần as Anh

Trần plays Anh, Sinh’s younger cousin and tour guide co-host.  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  is Trần’s second film. She previously starred in the Vietnamese rom-com  My Mr. Wife .

Nsưt Lê Thiện as Ba Noi

Lê Thiện plays Ba Noi, Sinh and Anh’s grandmother. She has had roles in Vietnamese movies and shows such as  Goodbye Mother , Until You , The Emperor’s Gift , Blood Moon Party and  Kumanthong .

Rachael Leigh Cook Falls For Vietnam — and a Local — in "A Tourist's Guide to Love" Trailer

One woman's real-life story of fate and exploration is getting the rom-com treatment. "A Tourist's Guide to Love," from writer Eirene Tran Donohue and director Steven K. Tsuchida, will begin streaming on April 21 on Netflix — and POPSUGAR has an exclusive first look at the trailer. Starring Rachael Leigh Cook, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" follows a travel executive on an undercover assignment in Vietnam shortly after an unexpected breakup. While there, the lines between work and pleasure blend as she finds herself falling for her tour guide, played by Scott Ly.

"Whenever I tell people about how I met my husband while traveling in Vietnam, they always say that it sounds like a movie, and so it's pretty surreal to actually turn it into one," writer Donohue tells POPSUGAR. "And while the story has changed a lot from my real life, the emotional truth is the same. That feeling when you meet someone who makes you realize that you can do or be anything. I'm so grateful to have found a partner who inspires and supports me and who, after 22 years together, keeps my life a romantic comedy instead of a drama."

Highlighting the rich culture of Vietnam was important for Donohue, and for the film's star and producer Cook, who fans first fell in love with in 1999's "She's All That." Filming the movie was the first time the actor and producer visited Vietnam, and she praises the country's people as being "so friendly, inclusive, loving, creative, and wholly unique." She tells POPSUGAR, "I feel very lucky to have been embraced by the people in the creative community there while we were making this film."

Fans have been falling back in love with rom-coms over the past few years, and Cook appreciates the unique take on the genre "A Tourist's Guide to Love" presents. She explains, "The aim of this film was not just to tell a love story, but to capture the sheer joy that can come with people from different cultures coming together and connecting over a shared, totally unique, and beautiful experience. This is a movie that is as much about loving life as it is another person."

In addition to being ripped from her own life, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" writer Donohue says she found inspiration in "classic old Hollywood movies." Explains Donohue to POPSUGAR, "I was a big fan of Audrey Hepburn. So 'Roman Holiday' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' were a big influence. Then of course the classic '90s rom coms. 'Pretty Woman,' 'While You Were Sleeping' and 'Sleepless in Seattle.' More recently, I've definitely been inspired by 'Crazy Rich Asians.' For me it's really important to make sure that the romance is central and also that the main character isn't just interested in finding a man, but that they are searching for love. And that the love they find is worthy of them. I want the audience to emotionally connect with the characters and to feel like that big love is real and that it's possible for them too. Everyone deserves a big love."

Get ready to experience the trip of a lifetime with Netflix's new romantic comedy, A Tourist's Guide to Love . When Amanda tries to come to terms with a sudden breakup, her company sends her across the world to Vietnam. What happens next is anyone's guess, though it involves a love triangle , a life-changing adventure, and an even more life-changing decision.

Variety exclusively announced that Rachael Leigh Cook would headline the project as Amanda in 2021. The film is actually based on an idea the actress had, which was brought to life as a screenplay by Eirene Donohue ( A Sugar & Spice Holiday ). In addition to starring in and thinking of the idea for the film, Cook is also a producer.

A Tourist's Guide to Love: The Plot

After being blindsided by a breakup instead of the proposal she was expecting, Amanda heads to Vietnam for her job and tries to find herself while experiencing everything the country has to offer. With Sinh as her guide, it looks like she may find everything she is looking for and even something she isn't as she explores Vietnam. The provided synopsis gives a bit more details on the purpose of her trip.

After an unexpected breakup, a travel executive (Rachael Leigh Cook) accepts an assignment to go undercover and learn about the tourist industry in Vietnam. Along the way she finds adventure and romance with her Vietnamese expat tour guide (Scott Ly) when they decide to reroute the tour bus in order to explore life and love off the beaten path.

Despite being sent to learn about the tourist industry, with the help of Sinh, Amanda seems to discover something new about herself and figure out what, and who she wants. Based on the trailer, the film appears to have a pretty standard rom-com setup, with her ex-boyfriend even flying to Vietnam after her. Of course, this creates a love triangle between the guy she thought would marry and the one showing her around Vietnam.

It looks like audiences will get to see a variety of places around Vietnam, from the cities to farms out in the country. The trailer also features scenes of a dragon dance, which could hint at the time of year the film takes place and a lantern activity on a river or lake. The dragon dance is part of several different festivals, but as confirmed in Tudum , Amanda is traveling in Vietnam during Tết or the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. This will add to the cultural experience she, and the audience, have during the film.

Rachael Leigh Cook is Amanda Riley, the woman who doesn't get put on hold. The actress is known for her work in She's All That , the TNT miniseries Into the West , and Hallmark films like Autumn in the Vineyard and Frozen in Love . Scott Ly is Sinh, the tour guide and love interest. Despite the trailer using the language "introducing," the actor has appeared in episodes of Bones , Animal Kingdom , and FBI: Most Wanted . Ben Feldman is John, the ex-boyfriend. Audiences may recognize him from the shows Drop Dead Dive and Superstore or the films As Above So Below and Cloverfield .

Everything Else We Know

True to the nature of Amanda's trip, production did take place throughout Vietnam in 2022. Director Steven K. Tsuchida described the experience of being one of the first American films to ever film entirely on location in Vietnam to Tudum.

"To be able to film in so many locations in Vietnam was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The excitement of [Ho Chi Minh City] was captivating, while the traditions of Hanoi were enriching. The diversity and culture of Da Nang, Hội An and My Son [sanctuary] was breathtaking. And living and filming in Hà Giang was spiritually moving."

The portrayal of the country, particularly because most American films featuring the area are about the Vietnam War , was essential to writer Eirene Donohue. When speaking with Tudum, the writer described what it meant to her to write a film taking place in Vietnam.

"There are almost no American movies set in Vietnam that aren't about the trauma of war. It was really important to me to tell a story about life now. One that was full of joy and love and celebration. I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told."

Moreover, the film is personal to the writer. She experienced a similar breakup just before going to Vietnam for five weeks. While there, she met her life partner at the very end of her trip.

"On my last week in Vietnam, I met a Canadian backpacker who was very much a free spirit and very adventurous... He was supposed to be my holiday fling, [but] we have been together ever since — 22 years."

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is as harmless as its blandly forgettable title would suggest. It’s not quite a Movie to Fold Laundry To, because the scenery is quite lovely, so you’ll actually want to pay attention. But it is a pleasant escape if you’re seeking lazy Saturday afternoon viewing.

Rachael Leigh Cook brings her perky rom-com presence to this made-for-Netflix movie, which checks all the boxes you’d expect from such a slick and glossy example of the genre. Slapstick comedy, fish-out-of-water gags, wacky supporting characters, copious shopping montages, a love triangle, a secret to be revealed and a last-minute dash to say “I love you”—they’re all there, but this time they’re set against the backdrop of present-day Vietnam, which gives “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” an unusual feeling of novelty.

Director Steven K. Tsuchida , a TV veteran, was also behind 2021’s “ Resort to Love ,” another Netflix romantic comedy set in a picturesque vacation destination. This is pure formula, but the leads have such a sweet chemistry with each other, and the locations are so enticing, that you may as well just surrender.

Cook stars as Amanda Riley, an uptight, Los Angeles-based travel agent living a safe and predictable existence with her boring accountant boyfriend, John ( Ben Feldman ). Amanda’s boss (and apparently only friend), Mona ( Missi Pyle ), insists John is going to propose to her. Instead, he tells her he’s taking a job in Ohio and putting their relationship on hold. (Julia Shiplett makes the most of a brief supporting role as Amanda’s unimpressed manicurist.)

Stunned, Amanda agrees to Mona’s suggestion that she travel to Vietnam undercover to scope out a local tour company with the possibility of her firm buying it. This is also her chance to eat-pray-love her way out of heartache. Plus, she’ll be there for the annual Tet celebration, which just happens to be all about renewal. Would any of this actually happen in real life? No. Would a spoiled hotel heiress actually hit her head on a tree at a ski resort, suffer amnesia and fall for the hunky, widowed dad who owns a charming bed and breakfast? Probably not. We don’t watch these kinds of movies for realism.

And so Type-A Amanda becomes part of a tour group led by the handsome and soulful Sinh ( Scott Ly ) and his effervescent cousin, Anh (Quinn Truc Tran). Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue tries somewhat to flesh out the motley assemblage of fellow travelers, but she saddles them with awkward small talk, and no one is terribly interesting. The inordinately prepared Amanda insists on adhering to the itinerary because she wants to get the most out of her covert mission, but the easygoing Sinh takes a more spontaneous approach which—spoiler!—Amanda eventually learns to enjoy. Sinh also happens to have just the right profound thing to say for every occasion, which speaks to the flux in which Amanda finds herself. (Example: “A tourist wants to escape life. A traveler wants to experience it.”) Again, these are familiar types, but Cook’s likability softens her character’s pushy, impatient traits, and the charismatic Ly’s understated delivery makes Sinh’s platitudes less cheesy than they might sound.

Working with cinematographer Jon Keng and featuring plenty of shimmering aerial shots, Tsuchida makes every stop along the way seem vibrant and appealing, from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the beaches of Da Nang to the verdant hills of Sinh’s home village. “Doing nothing feels very weird,” Amanda admits while lounging under an umbrella by the sea, and truer words were never spoken.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is essentially a travelogue with a plot, but you might actually find yourself caring about whether these two attractive-but-extremely-different people end up falling for each other in the end.

'A Tourists Guide to Love' starring Rachel Leigh Cook is coming to Netflix in April 2023.

Previously seen on He’s All That , Rachel Leigh Cook returns to Netflix to star in a brand new romantic comedy, A Tourist’s Guide to Love . Coming to Netflix in April 2023, we’re keeping track of everything you need to know about A Tourist’s Guide to Love , including the plot, cast, and Netflix release date.

The idea for the movie comes from Cook herself, which will be the second Netflix Original that she has produced following Love Guaranteed (added to Netflix on September 3rd, 2020).

The script for A Tourist’s Guide to Love will be written by screenwriter Eirene Donohue, whose credits include Girls’ Night Out, A Sugar & Spice Holiday, A Christmas Spark, and Christmas Cheer .

Cook will produce in addition to starring. Jim Head of Head First Productions will also produce, with Joel S. Rice and Lydia Storie of Muse Entertainment executive producing.

Directing the movie is Steven Tsuchida . The director has worked on a number of Netflix projects in the past including directing episodes of Cobra Kai and The Healing Powers of Dude . On the movie front, he directed last year’s Resort to Love which dropped in July 2021.

What’s the production status of A Tourist’s Guide to Love ?

As of November 2021, Netflix’s A Tourist’s Guide to Love is planned to enter production in March 2022 according to issue 1271 of Production Weekly . Filming was reportedly set to take place in South East Asia, particularly Vietnam.

In March, Netflix confirmed the movie would be filmed in April 2022 with it being the first major production headed to Vietnam since the global pandemic.

According to updated production listings, the movie wrapped up filming on June 16th, 2022.

Netflix's 'A Tourist's Guide to Love' Review: A classic rom-com that pulls at the heartstrings

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Romance genre is a popular category for all cinephiles out there who consistently want streaming services to churns out good rom-coms. While creating good rom-coms isn't rocket science, a good love story goes a long way. Earlier today, Netflix added another title to their list of corny rom-coms with 'A Tourist's Guide to Love'.

The plot of the story is set in Vietnam. There is a joy to finding love when you're out in the world trying to find yourself. There is a joy in someone noticing us for our internal progress and loving us despite of it all. The plot of 'A Tourist’s Guide to Love' comes close to this. It is washed up, but also balances the level of cringe with good acting. The cast includes Scott Ly as Sinh, Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda and Missi Pyle as Mona, Amanda's boss at Tourista World Travel and close friend.

Familiar workings of a standard vacation rom-com

As the film starts and we get to know each character and what they bring to the plot, we understand that Amanda works for a high-end agency called Tourista World Travel. And for some reason, she is a "by the book" kind of person, who likes schedules and hates derailed plans. One day, her boss Mona gives her a hint that her boyfriend John (Ben Feldman) will propose to her. So, to be ready and have the perfect engagement moment with perfect manicured hands, she goes to a manicurist and like every typical rom-com movie, she starts to tell her manicurist about her boyfriend and their relationship.

However, upon visiting John, Amanda realizes that John was actually moving away and wasn't asking her hand in marraige but a nod to take a break from the relationship. Heartbroken, Amanda decides to go on an adventure to another country to rejuvenate and refresh her mind. To also bring business to her company, she goes undercover as a regular tourist.

Amanda plans to go to Vietnam and immediately connects with a goofy but sensitive tour guide, Scott Ly's Sinh who is the exact diversion she is looking for. But, the tour guide isn't just a tour guide, but a curious person who tries to understand Amanda and brings her to meet him halfway to understand life, while showing her the beauty of Vietnam. 

A classic rom-com trope

There are slow motion shots of Scott Ly's Sinh emerging from water, and bike riders are seen everywhere as the production had to make the audience believe that the cast was in actual Vietnam. The whole story seems like a washed up version of every romantic film in the book. The plot of the movie begins with a clear direction but eventually gets lost in the shuffle of Amanda's many endeavors: falling in love, securing a client for her tour company, and reminiscing about her grandmother, all at once.

Romantic movies are all about the emotions they evoke, rather than the intricacies of their plots. While 'A Tourist’s Guide to Love' successfully manages to create those giddy, lovey-dovey feelings, it may not be enough to satisfy the more critical cinephiles who are looking for something more substantial in terms of story.

Actor: Born Kim Yoon-ji in Seoul, South Korea, Jung So-min found international fame as Oh Ha-ni in Playful Kiss , an adaptation of the famous manga series "Itazura Na Kiss". The actress has been at the forefront of several K-drama classics, including Because This Is My First Life , The Smile Has Left Your Eyes , and most recently, the fantasy K-drama Alchemy of Souls . Love Next Door is her next project after the movie Love Reset , which she starred in alongside Kang Ha-neul.

Character: Bae Seok-ryu is Love Next Door 's female lead and a childhood friend of Choi Seung-hyo. Throughout her life, Seok-ryu has always succeeded both academically and professionally . She is very energetic and passionate about the things she does. However, her abrupt return to her hometown after quitting her job is unexpected.

Born april 1, 1988.

Actor: Born in Seoul, South Korea, Jung Hae-in first gained notoriety in While You Were Sleeping as the police officer, Han Woo-tak. Since then, K-dramas such as Something in the Rain and movies like Tune in For Love showed how effortlessly Jung Hae-in can portray detailed roles. He has most recently explored darker characters in the action-packed K-drama D.P. and Disney+'s first original K-drama, Snowdrop . Love Next Door is Jung Hae-in’s first rom-com in a leading role .

Character: Choi Seung-hyo leads Love Next Door alongside Bae Seok-ryu. Throughout their shared childhoods, the duo shared many embarrassing moments they would rather forget. As an adult, he works as an architect and begins to gain attention as an up-and-coming figure in the field. However, Seung-hyo's reunion with Seok-ryu sets things awry in his personal life .

Kim Ji-eun as Jung Mo-eum

Actor: Kim Ji-eun was born in Incheon, South Korea and first gained recognition after starring as NIS agent Yoo Je-yi in the espionage thriller, The Veil . Kim Ji-eun has had prominent roles in TV shows One Dollar Lawyer and Again My Life . Love Next Door is Kim Ji-eun's second K-drama of 2024 , as she starred as the female lead of the body-swap rom-com, Branding in Seongsu , at the start of the year.

Character: Jung Mo-eum is a childhood friend of Seok-ryu and Seung-hyo, having grown up alongside them in the neighborhood of Hyeryeong. As such, Mo-eum knows all the secrets they would rather keep in the past . She currently works as a paramedic and has a quirky, down-to-earth personality that makes her perfect for her job.

Yun Ji-on as Kang Dan-ho

Born may 19, 1990.

• Active since: 2016

Actor: Yun Ji-on was born in Incheon, South Korea, and had supporting roles in several movies and TV shows. Some of the most notable include drama producer Lee Hyo-bong in Be Melodramatic , and moody assistant manager Lim Ryung-gu in Tomorrow . Most recently, Yun Ji-on starred as the second male lead in 2024's Serendipity's Embrace .

Character: Unlike the other three leading characters, Kang Dan-ho is new to the neighborhood and moves next door to Jung Mo-eum. He is a social affairs journalist with a warm heart who becomes friends with the childhood trio. Though he can be blunt and sometimes frustrating, Dan-ho is endearing and has good intentions.

Jung Hae-in's next K-drama will see him deviate from melodramas and thrillers and instead return to the genre that gave him his breakout role.

Park Ji-young as Na Mi-sook: Since her debut in 2000, Park Ji-young has appeared in notable shows such as Little Women and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo . She plays Seok-ryu's mother, who acts tough but cares deeply for her children.

Jo Han-chul as Bae Geun-sik: Before the series, Jo Han-chul appeared in projects such as Vincenzo , and My Name is Loh Kiwan . He portrays Seok-ryu's father in Love Next Door .

Jang Young-nam as Seo Hye-sook: Jang Young-nam is one of the original members of Saturday Night Live Korea and has seen great critical success on-screen. She plays Seung-ho's mother.

Lee Seung-joon as Choi Kyung-jong: Lee Seung-joon is active on both stage and screen and has appeared in some of the best K-dramas of all time ; Descendants of the Sun and Mr. Sunshine . Lee joins the cast as Choi Seung-ho's doting father.

Jeon Seok-ho as Yoon Myung-woo: Yoon Myeong-woo is one of Love Next Door 's comic relief characters and the head of Seung-hyo's architecture firm. Jeon's previous K-dramas include Strong Woman Do Bong-soon and The Good Wife.

Sim So-young as Lee Na-yoon: Lee Na-yoon adds another layer to Love Next Door as she has a crush on Seung-hyo. Sim So-young has recently made cameos in Unicorn and Work Now, Play Later .

Lee Seung-hyub as Bae Dong-jin: After his appearance in the 2024 smash-hit Lovely Runner , N.Flying's Lee Seung-hyub takes on the role of Seok-ryu's reckless younger brother in Love Next Door .

Kim Keum-soon as Do Jae-sook: In 2024, Kim Keum-soon has previously appeared in The Atypical Family as con artist Baek Il-hong. She portrays Jung Mo-eum's mother in Love Next Door .

Han Ye-ju as Bang In-sook: Bang In-sook is a lively addition to Love Next Door as a character who has a lot of internal rage. This is Han Ye-ju's first supporting role since When the Camellia Blooms .

Yu Ji-wang as Go Seul-gi: Yu Ji-wang plays Go Seul-gi in Love Next Door , a gym owner and bodybuilder who teaches Dong-jin about life and exercise. Yu Ji-wang has previously made cameo appearances in Bloodhounds and The Uncanny Counter .

As the android David ( Michael Fassbender ) once said in Prometheus , "big things have small beginnings." Martin Scorsese would most definitely qualify as a "big thing," being one of the defining filmmakers of the 20th century, whose hold on cinema culture is still felt to this day. For a noted cinema encyclopedia like him, his small beginning was watching television in 1947, when he saw a film called The Thief of Bagdad . It was a fantastical film that not only captivated little Marty, it helped ingrain in him his life-long fascination with director Michael Powell , who would become a deeply influential person in his career. Looking back as an adult, Scorsese would attribute Powell's specific direction in The Thief of Bagdad as a watershed moment in making him fall in love with films , and the film stands as a seminal example of sheer storytelling craft.

In this fantasy adventure, a young thief joins forces with a deposed king to reclaim his throne and rescue a princess from an evil sorcerer. Along the way, they encounter magical creatures, flying carpets, and enchanted objects, all while battling the sorcerer’s dark powers.

What Is Michael Powell's 'The Thief of Bagdad' About?

The Thief of Bagdad is essentially a version of the Arabian Nights tale of Aladdin long before Disney made some major changes with their iconic version starring Robin Williams . Ahmad ( John Justin ) is a blind beggar on the streets of Basra, who gets money by performing tricks and asking people for spare change. When he is taken in by some kind women, he regales them with his tale of how he was once the revered King of Bagdad. But when his secretly evil second-in-command, Jaffar (Conrad Veidt), tricks him into being arrested and thrown in prison, Ahmad teams up with a cunning thief named Abu (Sabu) in prison, and they break out to get Ahmad's throne back and overthrow Jaffar . Along the way, Ahmad will fall for the beautiful Princess ( June Duprez ) of Bagdad, who Jaffar is scheming after for his own lust. Ahmad's and Abu's combined efforts to save the Princess and stop Jaffar serve as an excuse for a series of setpieces that are frankly awe-inspiring in their ingenuity from a special effects perspective. The film around the setpieces is still very well-acted and well-paced for what it's trying to do, but it really soars when it fully dives into an eye-popping spectacle that had to have been mind-blowing for a 1940 audience .

The Special Effects of 'The Thief of Bagdad' Are Staggering

A majority of those popped eyes came courtesy of an innovation that The Thief of Bagdad can claim to be responsible for: blue-screen technology . As reported by the Huffington Post , "by using three separate strips of film (one each for red, green, and blue), [special effects artist Larry Butler] could arrange the original negative and newly printed positive strips so that the blue negative and green positive strips would create a solid matte. This would be composited with new footage shot against a blue screen." Once that was done, images could be (mostly) seamlessly put on top of each other in a way that would allow figures to do things impossible to capture in real life .

Many of the film's biggest "wow" moments come from this process, though sometimes it can be hard to look past the thick blue lines around the characters and how faded they look compared to the background footage. That said, there's no shortage of inspired ideas brought to thrilling life, ranging from a flying horse, a flying carpet, tiny dancers frolicking in a music box, and a mountain-sized Djinni ( Rex Ingram ) who proves vital to Ahmad's and Abu's quest. Coming just a year after The Wizard of Oz , a similarly fantastical production that didn't use any compositing at all, it's a huge leap forward in filmmaking technology that makes The Thief of Bagdad feel much more bombastic in its grandeur, and contributes towards the film's goal of being a pulse-pounding extravaganza.

This Unique Fantasy Movie Flips the Time Travel Genre on Its Head

Vincent Ward's underrated feature gives us a new way to time travel.

The grandeur would have been blown too far out of proportion were it not for the film's mixing of more in-camera practical effects . The cityscapes of Bagdad and Basra are filmed from a forced perspective against matte painted skies that make them feel vast, especially when we're treated to shots of huge crowds roving throughout the streets. Abu's encounters with the Djinni are enhanced by huge models of the Djinni's foot almost crushing him and a giant ear and shoulder for Abu to stand on when they go flying in the air. Abu gets to have a big fight with a huge spider that's clearly a life-size model , while he's also clambering up real-looking spiderwebs, and that makes Abu's struggle all the more rewarding. Even the practical effects that are very noticeable now, like the strings holding up the flying carpet and the bald cap that Ingram wears for the role, add to the make-believe charm and utter sincerity of the production. That sincerity is carried over to the cast, with Justin and Sabu sharing a buoyant energy between the two of them that verges on bromance , while Veidt and Ingram steal the show with their ultra-pyrotechnical displays of wanton villainy and uproarious elation, respectively. That combination of male camaraderie, intensely plausible action scenes, and aspirational storytelling all connected with Scorsese, and you can see those traits in the films he's made throughout his career. Listening to Martin Scorsese's commentary on the Criterion Collection DVD edition of The Thief of Bagdad is an insightful window into how much of an imprint seeing the film as a child left on him as an adult artist. While acknowledging the contribution of four other directors in service of the film's architect, super producer Alexander Korda , Scorsese's thoughts routinely go back to the work of Michael Powell, the legendary director behind films like A Matter of Life and Death and The Red Shoes . Scorsese theorizes that the primary reason he loves the film so much is the way Powell's direction fixates on the story's elements of vision and blindness, its child-like and irony-free sensibilities, and its mixing of studio-based craft with Powell's documentary-influenced movement inside the frame.

Scorsese admires Powell's sense of visual playfulness in the compositions as well. He makes note of how Powell's previous experience making documentary films in Burma influenced his comfort in depicting the cultural locations, and he emphasizes how Powell's editing captures the emotion of the scene in a way that Scorsese claims has influenced how he edits all of his films. After another season of love and heartbreak, the season six cast of "Love Island USA" will come together to hash out lingering drama for the reunion episode.

"Love Island USA," which is a spin-off of a reality show of the same name from the U.K. , brings singles together in a Fijian villa for a chance at finding their next partners. Contestants, dubbed "islanders," couple up, get dumped and face various challenges over the course of six weeks. During the finale, the public chooses a winning couple to win $100,000.

This show's USA version debuted in 2019 on CBS. After its first three seasons, the show moved to Peacock (NBCUniversal is the parent company of Peacock and NBC News.)

Many fans online have already speculated that the reunion will be full of drama. Videos of the islanders addressing their relationships and experiences with bullying circulated on social media after the taping of the reunion last week.

Here's what to know about the reunion.

How can I watch the reunion?

The "Love Island USA" reunion, which was taped in New York City last week, will be available to stream on Monday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Peacock.

For those who need a refresher or want to join in the conversation, all episodes of "Love Island USA" season six are available to stream on Peacock.

Who will be in attendance?

Winners Serena Page and Kordell Beckham will be at the reunion, alongside other fan-favorite couples and contestants.

The "Love Island USA" X account shared some of the other islanders who attended the reunion taping last week.

Runners-up couples Leah Kateb and Miguel Harichi; JaNa Craig and Kenny Rodriguez; and Nicole Jacky and Kendall Washington are expected to appear.

Fans online have speculated that there will be a dramatic confrontation between couple Kaylor Martin and Aaron Evans, who reportedly broke up after the conclusion of the show, according to People.

Other big characters expected to be at the reunion include: Olivia Walker, Rob Rausch, Andrea Carmona and Daniela Ortiz Rivera.

"Vanderpump Rules" star Ariana Madix will return as a host for the reunion.

What has the fan response been to this season?

This season has been regarded by fans as one of the best seasons to date. The show became the No. 1 reality series in the U.S. across streaming, according to a press release from NBCUniversal in July.

Peacock reported that streaming reach for season 6 is double that of previous seasons.

But the show's popularity has also led to increased levels of scrutiny on the contestants.

Daniela Ortiz Rivera, who was in a controversial love triangle this season, posted a video on TikTok and Instagram raising awareness to bullying and suicide prevention after seeing the response to the show.

"All the hate that people are getting breaks my heart so much because at the end of the day, these people are not characters, they're real people with real feelings," she said in her video.

Ahead of the reunion, a statement shared on the "Love Island USA" X and Instagram accounts encouraged fans to "end the season with the same love and respect we started with!"

"the reunion is full of drama, but remember — these are real people, so let's keep it kind and positive," the statement read.

Rumors about what happened at the reunion claimed that Kateb had a major “blow up” during filming, but the former Islander denied such claims .

“No ‘blow up’ happened at the reunion,” Kateb replied on TikTok. “Yall make any n everything up.”

She continued, “I’m exhausted mentally physically and spiritually from this entire experience. I’m tired. I told them I am DONE after reunion.”

In another reply, Kateb added, “That’s all they were getting from me. Respectfully. Everything else I just can’t and they don’t even deserve me. Period moving on.”

The next installment in Ryan Murphy's true crime anthology series follows the Menendez brothers.

Per the official Netflix logline, "While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed – and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole – that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.
