The recorded existence of Tubigon dates back to the early 17th century when settlers were drawn to its abundant natural resources. These early Malays, believed to be descendants of Southeast Asian migrants, established their homes along the riverbanks of Tubigon. The place was initially called "Tubigan" due to its water-filled surroundings, eventually evolving into the name "Tubigon," meaning a place abundant in water.

In 1816, the settlers organized themselves under a headman called "Cato" and began building a community. The town was officially recognized in 1819 and gained independence from Calape, with Teniente Matong as its first Gobernadorcillo or "Capitan." The community's religious needs were attended to by Spanish friars from Calape, who administered baptisms and held Sunday masses.

Over the years, Tubigon continued to develop and expand its boundaries. The authorities established fixed boundaries with neighboring towns, including Inabanga, Calape, Catigbi-an, and Antequera. Despite losing five barrios to the newly created town of Clarin, Tubigon has thrived and transformed into a progressive community.

8. Hinagdanan Cave

The Hinagdanan Cave is a welcome break from the typical beach activities in Panglao Island. The entrance can only be accessed one at a time and leads to a cavern that features a freshwater lagoon and natural rock formations. The term Hinagdanan is a Cebuano word for “laddered” and was named so because of how it was discovered – accidentally, by a farmer who was clearing land, and eventually built a ladder to access the cave. The cave was also used as a hiding spot by locals during the Second World War.

16. Blood Compact Site

Sandugo or blood compact is a Philippine ancient ritual wherein both factions cut their wrist and drink the blood together with wine or other liquids to seal an agreement and to signify their friendship. A shrine was built in honor of the historic blood compact between Rajah Sikatuna of Bohol and Miguel Lopez de Legaspi of Spain that is often considered as the First Treaty of Friendship between different cultures, races, and religions. A monument of five life-sized men performing the ritual, sculpted by Boholano, National Artist Napoleon Abueva, now stands in Brgy. Bool in Tagbilaran City. The Blood Compact Site is easily accessible even by tricycle since it is along the national highway. Aside from taking a trip back in history, you will also enjoy the cool breeze and refreshing view on the site.

While it is still unknown how the famous Chocolate Hills came to be, and how many hills there are, one thing is certain – that the Chocolate Hills is a must-see attraction. They are green during the rainy season but turn brown during the dry season, resembling Hershey’s kisses chocolates, thus the name. They can be visited during both seasons, and they are just as marvelous all throughout the year. An endless view of these hills can best be appreciated at the Chocolate Hills Complex (view deck) in Carmen Town. If you want to visit without the huge crowds, go during sunrise. It takes extra effort, but the magical view of the hills under the golden hour light is worth it.

A trip to Bohol won’t be complete without visiting the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary. Endangered and a protected species, the tarsier is a tiny and odd-looking primate. Seeing one in real life is a special experience because Bohol is one of the few places you can get to see them up close. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella is within a short 20-minute drive from Tagbilaran City. Inside the sanctuary, you will be able to see and take photos of these marvelous creatures in their natural habitat. Just remember no flash photography, please.

The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella is the only site in Bohol run by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation. If you want to help with the conservation of Tarsiers, visit this one and not the conservation area in Bilar named “Tarsier Conservation Area,” where the tarsiers are forcefully placed & constantly disturbed for visitors.

The Loboc River Cruise is a popular activity to do in Bohol. Loboc is located approximately 24 kilometers away from Tagbilaran City. It’s about 40 mins by car, and an hour by public transport.

20. Bilar Man-Made Forest

You wouldn’t believe that this two-kilometer canopy of verdant mahogany trees over the highway between the borders of Bilar and Loboc is actually manmade. The trees look almost uniform and are so close to each other that they make a great place for cooling down and taking breath-taking photos. The manmade forest is quite easy to access too and you can easily include this stopover in your itinerary. If you’re on your way to visit the Chocolate Hills from Loboc, you surely won’t miss it.

21. Baclayon Church

The Church of Immaculada Concepcion, or more popularly known as Baclayon Church, is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and probably the most famous heritage site in Bohol. It was founded in 1596, but was only elevated as a Parish in 1717 and was completed in 1727. Its original façade is made of coral stones that were dragged from the sea and cut into cruciform shapes. In the 19th century, another facade was built together with surrounding stone buildings. An old convent, now converted into a museum, is located next to the church and houses century-old relics.

3.At Tagbilaran Integrated Bus Terminal, you can ride the bus or van to Ubay, Bohol or Anda, Bohol. Tell the driver you are going to Candijay, Bohol. One-way bus fare is roughly ₱80 ($1.58), while the van fare is approximately ₱130 ($2.57) per person.

4.If taking the bus or van to Ubay, tell the driver you will get off at Lungsod Daan Public Market.

5.At Lungsod Daan Public Market, hire a habal-habal (motorcycle) to the major Candijay tourist attractions, such as, Cadapdapan Rice Terraces (Candijay Rice Terraces) and Can-umantad Falls (Candijay Waterfalls). Roundtrip fare is approximately ₱200 ($4), may include waiting time.

6.Visit the Cadapdapan Rice Terraces (Candijay Rice Terraces), this is first tourist attraction that you will see in the village. Get off the habal-habal (motorcycle) to explore the area and take photos.

7. From Cadapdapan Rice Terraces, hop on the habal-habal to Can-umantad Falls (Candijay Waterfalls) parking lot in Candijay Bohol. Transit time is about 20 minutes.  Alternatively, you can take an easy trek for approximately 15 minutes from Cadapdapan Rice Terraces to Can-umantad Waterfalls, or vice versa. There’s about 80 plus steps going down the falls through a private entrance.

If you take a habal-habal to Can-umantad Falls (Candijay Waterfalls) and enter via the public entrance, a young guide will assist you to the waterfall (he/she is wearing an ID). There’s no standard guide fee, but tipping is recommended.  I gave our guide ₱100 ($2), since it was just a short and easy trek. Additional fee applies if you want to visit the Candijay Mangrove Forest.

CEBU TO CANDIJAY BOHOL

There are 2 ferry routes of ferry and fast craft from Cebu City to Bohol.  Fastcat depart from Cebu City  Pier 3 to Tubigon, Bohol.  Travel time is about 1.5 hours.  Meanwhile, Oceanjet and Oceanfast both depart from Cebu City Pier 1 to Tagbilaran Port in Bohol. Travel time is approximately 2 hours.

Tagbilaran to Candijay, Bohol

There are ferries and fastcraft from Cebu City to Tagbilaran Bohol.  Oceanjet, Oceanfast, and Weesam, all depart from Cebu City Pier 1 to Tagbilaran, Bohol. If you are coming from Tagbilaran, Bohol to Candijay, Bohol, here’s the route that you can take. But take note that these Fastcraft are for passengers only, no freight, so, you can’t take your car , motorcycle or any other vehicle with you.

1.Ride a fast craft/ferry to Tagbilaran, Bohol at Pier 1 in Cebu City. Ferry fare starts at ₱275 ($5) for Economy seats, ₱310 ($6) for Premium seats, and  ₱345 ($7) for Business class. If you book online, there’s a minimal service fee that will be added to the ferry fare. You can check out the Cebu-Bohol ferry schedule and book your seat in advance through the link below.

2. At Tagbilaran Port, hope on a tricycle to take you to Tagbilaran Integrated Bus Terminal.

3. At Tagbilaran Integrated Bus Terminal, catch a bus or van to Ubay, Bohol .  Tell the driver you are getting at Lungsod-Daan Public Market. One way bus fare is around ₱80 ($1.60) per person while van fare is approximately ₱130 ($3) per person.

4. Get off at Lungsod Daan, Public Market .

5. Charter a habal-habal (motorbike) to take you to Candijay tourist spots like Cadapdapan Rice Terraces (Candijay Rice Terraces) and Can-umantad Falls (Candijay Waterfalls) and Canawa Cold Spring. The first tourist attraction that you will see is (Cadapdapan Rice Terraces) Candijay Rice Terraces, next is the Can-umantad Waterfalls, and then Canawa Cold Spring. Additional fee applies if you want to visit the Candijay Mangrove Forest.

TUBIGON TO CANDIJAY BOHOL

  You may think is the better option when coming from Cebu since the travel time to Tubigon, Bohol is only 1.5 hours, but take note you have to change bus twice and since there’s no available information regarding the bus schedule from Tubigon to Carmen and Carmen to Ubay. So, taking the bus from Tubigon may take longer than expected as you have to wait for the next bus to arrive.

What’s good about taking the Fastcat though, is, because it’s a ferry, you can take your private vehicle with you and just pay the necessary freight fees. But if you have no car, motorcycle or vehicle with you, I’d go with the Cebu City to Tagbilaran route to Candijay.

1.From Cebu City Pier 3, take the Fastcat ferry to Tubigon. Travel time is roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Fastcat fare (full fare) from Cebu to Tubigon, Bohol and vice versa is ₱275 ($5.43) for Economy seats, ₱310 ($6) for Premium Economy, and ₱345 ($7) for Business Class. You can check the Fastcat ferry schedule and book a seat through the link below.

• CEBU TO TUBIGON FERRY/FASTCRAFT: BOOK HERE

2. At Tubigon, ride a bus to Carmen, Bohol. Travel time is about 1 hour and 11 minutes.

3. At Carmen, hop on a bus to Ubay and ask the driver to drop you off at the Lungsod-Daan Public Market. Travel time is approximately 1 hour and bus fare is more or less ₱130 ($2.57).

4. At Lungsod-Daan Public Market, hire a habal-habal (motorcycle) to take you to Candijay Waterfalls, Candijay Rice Terraces and Canawa Cold Spring. Fare is roughly ₱200 ($4), may include waiting time. Entrance fee to Cadapdapan Rice Terraces is about ₱20 ($0.39), Candijay Waterfalls has free entrance but you may pay for a guide, and Canawa Cold Spring entrance fee is ₱20 ($0.39).

ANDA TO CANDIJAY, BOHOL

If you’re already in Anda, Bohol, you may also visit Candijay, Bohol, about 44 minutes away. Here’s how:

1 .From Anda, take a multicab to the highway. Fare is about ₱20 ($0.39).

2.Ride a bus to Tagbilaran, Bohol, that will pass by Candijay.

3.Alight at Lungsod Daan Crossing or at Lungsod Public Market.

4.Hire a habal-habal (motorbike) to take you to Candijay Rice Terraces, Candijay Waterfalls, and Canawa Cold Spring.   Additional fee may apply if you want to visit the Candijay Mangrove Forest.  

Argao Cebu to Candijay, Bohol

We took this route since we were coming from South Cebu.  We took a large ferry that can carry vehicles.

1. If you are coming from South Cebu like Oslob, Moalboal, Osmena Peak, etc., you can take a ferry at Argao Port to Tagbilaran, Bohol.   Fare is around ₱200 ($4) for adults, ₱143 ($3)for seniors, and ₱100 ($2)for kids.

2. At Tagbilaran Port, take a tricycle to Tagbilaran Integrated Bus Terminal.

3. At Tagbilaran Integrated Bus Terminal , catch a bus or van to Ubay, Bohol. One way bus fare is around ₱80 ($1.60)per person while van fare is around ₱130 ($2.60).

4. Alight at Lungsod Daan, Public Market.

5. Hire a habal-habal (motorbike) to take you to Candijay tourist spots like Cadapdapan Rice Terraces (Candijay Rice Terraces), Canumantad waterfalls (Candijay Falls), and Canawa Cold Spring .

DUMAGUETE TO CANDIJAY, BOHOL

1. From Dumaguete Port (Negros Oriental) take the fast craft to Tagbilaran Fast craft Terminal in Bohol.  Travel time is around 2 hours.

2. At Tagbilaran Port, hire a tricycle to Tagbilaran Integrated Terminal.

3. At Tagbilaran Integrated Terminal, take a bus or van to Ubay, Bohol. One way bus fare is around ₱80 ($1.60) per person while van fare is around ₱130 ($2.60).

4. Disembark at Lungsod Daan, Public Market.

5. Hire a habal-habal (motorbike) to take you to Candijay tourist spots like Cadapdapan Rice Terraces (Candijay Rice Terraces), Can-umantad waterfalls (Candijay Falls), and Canawa Cold Spring.  

GETTING AROUND CANDIJAY

The best way to get around Candijay is by habal-habal (motorbike).  You can hire a motorcycle to tour Candijay Bohol tourist attractions such as Can-umantad Falls, Cadapdapan Rice Terraces and Cadapdapan Spring for around ₱200 ($4) per person.

WHERE TO STAY IN CANDIJAY, BOHOL

Since Candijay, Bohol is a fairly new tourist destination, there’s only a handful of hotel/accommodation here.  If you want to stay overnight and soak up the atmosphere in Candijay Bohol, you can book a homestay.

  A rising tourist attraction in the province of Bohol are the rice terraces of Candijay.  Once you enter Brgy. Cadapdapan, you will be welcomed by a sea of green rice fields and rice terraces.   There’s no written history as to when the rice terraces here were formed, but locals say that they were built by their ancestors for a long period of time.  The most scenic of the rice terraces in Candijay is the Cadapdapan Rice Terraces owned by Eleuterio’s Can-Umantad Falls and Rice Terraces Resort Inc. This palm-fringed rice terraces is irrigated by Cadapdapan River that flows into the towering Can-umantad Falls.

At 60 feet, Can-umantad falls is said to be the tallest waterfall in Bohol province. You can reach Can-umantad Falls via Cadapdapan Rice Terraces by trekking down a 500 step stairs that leads to the towering waterfalls. This route though is not for the faint-hearted, so if you want an easier way to get there, just hire a habal-habal (motorbike) to take you to the public entrance that was recently developed by the Local Government Unit (LGU).  There’s no entrance fee if you pass through this path, you just need to sign in the logbook. But there are local guides that will volunteer to guide you.  There’s no standard guide fee, but tipping is recommended.  Be careful as there are slippery areas, especially during rainy season.  There’s a deeper basin with emerald water just before the main waterfall in Can-umantad where you can swim.  The main catch basin just below Can-umantad Falls is quite shallow, but most tourists prefer to take a dip here.

Derived from the local word “kawa” (cauldron), Canawa Cold Spring is a popular spring in Candijay turned into a swimming pool. It is known for its tempting cobalt water fringed by gigantic trees. The Canawa Cold Spring is so deep, reportedly all attempts to measure its depth have all failed so far.

CANDIJAY MANGROVE FOREST

Entrance Fee: FREE

Not a lot of tourists traveling to Candijay know that there’s a hidden mangrove forest in the village. Since we still have an hour to spare, we decided to pay a visit.  Unfortunately, it was already late, so we couldn’t go on mangrove tour by boat. But there is a floating restaurant at the small wharf here, where you can enjoy delicious grilled seafood and other local dishes.

The Bohol Mahogany Forest is commonly dubbed a man-made forest because of the incredible uniformity in height and spacing of all the Mahogany trees all throughout a two-kilometer stretch of a highway.

It’s like every single Mahogany tree was artificially placed and arranged along the curvature of the road as well! This awe-inspiring attraction is like a scene cut straight from a horror movie and it is truly amazing. Be sure to take photos because I’m sure it’ll be one hell of an Instagram post!

11. Baclayon Church

Of course, it has already been a tradition for many Filipinos to always drop by a church to offer some prayers and respect whenever they visit a new place. And in this case, visiting Baclayon Church or more popularly known as La Purisima Concepcion de la Virgen Maria Parish Church, the oldest Christian settlement in Bohol, would be a perfect choice. This church was built in 1727 where Spanish priests forced more than 200 laborers to finish the construction.

The cute little mammals are actually smaller than an average man’s palm and I’m sure that just watching them will make your hearts melt, especially if you’re an animal lover! Oh, and remember. The sanctuary serves as a safe haven for the Tarsiers, they are highly sensitive to several environmental factors so make sure that you stay disciplined and responsible during your visit. 13. Dimiao Twin Waterfalls

It’s really an incredible fact how Bohol seems to never run out of natural wonders, right? Well, buckle up because here’s another one on the way! The Dimiao Twin Waterfalls or more popularly known as the Pahangog Falls is undoubtedly one of the best waterfalls in Bohol.

The Abatan River stretches 20 km traversing several small villages in Bohol province. The river opens to an estuary, which grows as many as 32 mangrove species of the entire Philippines.

Before the fireflies can glow, they spend three years as larvae in the undergrowth beneath the trees. They then metamorphose as bioluminescent fireflies but could only light for one month of their adult lives.

You can go ahead and tour the mangroves on a kayak, either on a shared tour or private tour. Prepare to see the fireflies, which are bioluminescent phytoplanktons that twinkles in the galaxies beneath and above the mangroves come evening.

It’s a must-visit church due to its gorgeous Neo-Romanesque facade, with a depiction of Old Testament symbols on its side interiors.

It’s one of the best museums in Bohol because of its extensive collection of geological remains, rock formations, burial coffins, and others.

Bohol is one of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines and it’s packed with many gorgeous and interesting places to visit. The island is mostly famous for the Chocolate Hills and the cute-looking tarsiers but it has many more things to offer.

If you’re looking for a vacation spot that has something for everyone, Bohol is definitely worth considering. Here are eight of the best tourist spots in Bohol that you won’t want to miss!

Before we dive all into all the best tourist spots in Bohol, let’s go over some practical information for visiting this beautiful island.

How to get to Bohol

How to get to bohol from manila.

If you want to visit Bohol from Manila your only option is flying. Luckily Bohol has an airport – Panglao International Airport (TAG) – and you can find cheap flights easily.

Cebu Pacific, Air Asia, and Philippine Airlines operate several flights on a daily basis between Manila and Bohol. The flight takes around 1.5 hours and the ticket prices are usually between 1,500-2,500 PHP ($25-45 US).

How to get to Bohol from Cebu

Although you have many options to get from Cebu to Bohol , unfortunately flying directly is not one of them. The easiest option is taking a ferry which is very straightforward and it’s actually much cheaper than flying from Manila.

Bohol has two ferry ports – Tubigon and Tagbilaran – and you need to pay attention to which port your ferry is going to because they are actually pretty far from each other!

Tubigon is located on the northwest part of the island and since it’s quite far from the best tourist spots there is a big chance that it’s not the right ferry port for you.

Tagbilaran, on the other hand, is located on the southwest side of the island and it’s the capital of the island with many hotels, shopping malls, and restaurants.

There are three different companies that operate on the Cebu-Tagbilaran route: OceanJet, SuperCat, and Island Water.

They are all departing from Cebu Pier 1, a tourist class ticket usually costs around 600-700 PHP ($11-12.50 US). There is not much of a difference between the three, just take the one which has the best timing for your needs.

Whenever I’m in Asia I always book my transportation tickets via 12Go Asia . Their website is super easy to use, you just have to type in your origin and your destination and it collects you all the available transportation methods.

How much time do you need to spend on Bohol

As I said before Bohol is the 10th largest island in the Philippines so it has a lot of things to offer. You will need a minimum of 3 days in Bohol to explore the main tourist spots on the island.

If you want to spend more time on the beaches or want to go island hopping to the nearby islands you can easily spend 5-7 days in Bohol.

Best time to visit Bohol

Before visiting the Philippines I made the mistake of checking only a few sites about the weather. All of them said that December is a dry season in the Philippines so that’s why I decided to visit the islands before Christmas. Then I arrived in Bohol and was welcomed with pouring rain. What?!

It turned out that despite December is being considered as a dry season for some parts of the Philippines – it is not true for Bohol. Typically the dry season lasts from March to May on the island but you can still expect a little rain in this period too.

The wet season starts with the northeast monsoon in late May and it lasts up until the beginning of March. In this period you can expect 15 rainy days on average.

The temperature is always hot and humid in Bohol. The humidity is around 80% all year long, while the hottest months are April, May, and June.

Where to stay in Bohol

There is a wide range of accommodations available in Bohol, basically, you can find anything from cheap hostels to luxury resorts. If you are visiting Bohol as a tourist the best places to stay are either in the capital city, Tagbilaran or on Panglao Island.

Panglao Island

If you want to stay close to the best beaches in Bohol then staying on Panglao Island is the best choice for you. This small island is connected to the main island by a bridge and it is very easy to get there.

The best resorts are located in the southern part of the island, near Alona beach and Bolod Beach. Check all the accommodations on Panglao Island here !

LUXURY – South Palms Resort Panglao

Just a few steps from Bolod Beach, South Palms Resort Panglao features a spa, a gym, and an outdoor pool. The tropically decorated rooms are air-conditioned and feature a flat-screen TV with cable channels, a personal safe, tea/coffee-making amenities, and a minibar.

MID-RANGE – North Zen Villas

Situated in Panglao, 150 m from Doljo Beach, North Zen Villas features accommodation with a restaurant, free private parking, a garden, and a terrace. The resort provides an outdoor swimming pool and a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi.

BUDGET – Glamping Alona

With pool views, Glamping Alona is set in Panglao and has a restaurant, room service, bar, garden, outdoor pool, and sun terrace. The tented camp features both WiFi and private parking free of charge. We stayed here personally and loved everything about it!

Staying in Tagbilaran is a good choice if you want to explore the best tourist spots in Bohol and you want to minimize traveling time. You won’t find too many luxury or beachfront resorts here but the prices are much lower so if you are traveling on a budget that’s good news for you.

LUXURY – Kasagpan

A cliffside hideaway in Bohol, Kasagpan offers air-conditioned bungalows with pool or sea views. The resort also features 2 outdoor swimming pools, a restaurant, and free WiFi in all public areas.

MID-RANGE – Sweet Home Boutique Hotel

Set in Tagbilaran City, Sweet Home Boutique Hotel provides a terrace. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk, and room service, along with free WiFi throughout the property.

BUDGET – Bohol Ecotel

Situated in Tagbilaran City, within 8.3 km of Hinagdanan Cave and 37 km of Tarsier Conservation Area, Bohol Ecotel features accommodation with a shared lounge and free WiFi throughout the property as well as free private parking for guests who drive.

Best Tourist Spots in Bohol

And now let’s get to the juicy part of my Bohol travel guide and let’s see all the best tourist spots in Bohol! On the below map you can see all the places mentioned in this article with their retrospective number.

The numbers don’t reflect any ranking order, they are just simply there to make it easier for you to find all the best places to visit in Bohol on the map! You can also save this map to your Google Maps app on your phone if you click on the bracket in the upper right corner.

1. Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills is one of the best tourist spots in Bohol and you definitely need to see this amazing landscape with your own eyes!

The hills are located in the middle of the island –  you can rent a motorbike to go there on your own, hire a private driver or join an organized tour.

There are more than 1,200 hills and during the dry season they are all brown – hence the name. However, if you’re visiting in the rainy season the hills and the surrounding area will be lush green.

You can’t climb the hills individually and there is only one viewing platform that is accessible by a long stairway. The entrance fee is 50 PHP ($1 US) per person.

There is not much to do besides admiring the Chocolate Hills from the platform so you will only need 20-30 minutes for visiting.

2. Tarsier Sanctuary

Bohol is really famous for the tarsiers and visiting these wide-eyed monkey-looking creatures are one of the top things to do in Bohol.

You can visit the tarsiers in three different locations on the island. We visited the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella which is officially run by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation.

Tarsiers are officially recognized as endangered species. They are really sensitive emotionally and they can get stressed out easily. If their stress level is too high they often commit suicide by banging their heads against the trees.

That’s why you can only visit for a short period of time and you have to keep your voice to a minimum level to protect the animals. You can take photos of them without the flash but touching them is strictly prohibited.

You have to pay 150 PHP ($2.70 US) per person for the entrance fee. A local guide will lead you through the jungle in a small group and he will help you spot the tarsiers. They are really small, like half the size of your hand so without the guide it would be really hard to see where they are.

The trek in the jungle is really short, we spent only like 15-20 minutes there but we could see at least 4-5 tarsiers.

3. Bilar Man-Made Forest

The Bilar Man-Made Forest is a 2 km long forest located on the border of Bilar and Loboc towns. You will find huge Mahogany trees in this forest creating a natural tunnel above the roads.

Honestly, if I didn’t know about these trees I probably wouldn’t even noticed but actually, they are not naturally grown, they were planted by humans. And this is the only interesting thing about them –  don’t expect more.

There is not much to see or do here but since you will drive through it anyway from the Tarsier Sanctuary on the way to the Chocolate Hills it’s a nice stop for a quick photo.

4. Alona Beach

Alona Beach is one of the best beaches in Bohol. It’s located on the southern side of Panglao Island and there are many resorts, hotels, and restaurants nearby.

It’s a 1.5 km (1 mile) long white sandy beach with two rock walls bordering on both ends. The water is very shallow and crystal clear which makes it perfect for swimming.

There are numerous dive boats around and you can also go island hopping from the beach to the nearby islands.

5. Dimiao Twin Falls (Pahangog Falls)

The twin falls near Dimiao are definitely one of the best tourist spots to visit in Bohol! Although I’m not sure if you can call it a tourist spot because it is not so well-known amongst visitors. But this is just one more reason for you to visit!

On Google Maps, you will find this waterfall as Pahangog Falls. Unfortunately, you can’t visit it by car, you will need a scooter or a motorbike to go there.

Don’t worry if you’re not comfortable driving a motorbike – you can hire a local guide to take you there just like we did. 

Even if you take a motorbike you still need to walk the last 1 km (0.6 miles) on foot. It’s a very steep hike down and it is not completely built yet so be careful! The roads are really slippery, especially after rain.

It’s definitely not an easy hike but it’s completely worth all the struggle! The waterfalls are really beautiful and you can even swim in the water which is very refreshing after the hike. You need to pay 20 PHP ($0.40 US) per person and you will have the waterfalls almost to yourself!

6. Ingkumhan Falls

Ingkumhan Falls is located only 3 km (1.8 miles) away from the Dimiao Twin Falls so you can easily visit both of them during a day trip.

Getting to Ingkumhan Falls is pretty similar to the twin falls as you need to hike down on a super steep road as well. Proper shoes are a real must-have! You also need to pay 20 PHP ($0.40 US) per person to enter the falls.

What makes this waterfall really special is that there is a huge swing and a rope which is super fun! It looks very dangerous at first but there are always a few local guys around who will guide you and teach you how to do it.

Although it looks pretty scary definitely go for it if you can! I almost chickened out but made up my mind in the end and it was super amazing!

7. Rice fields

I didn’t know it before I visited but actually, Bohol is full of beautiful rice fields! It reminded me a lot of Bali and I was really happy to see these lush green fields on this island too.

The most famous ones are the Cadapdapan Rice Terraces but since it’s quite far from the other tourist spots we didn’t go there in the end.

However, if you have the time definitely check it out! And don’t worry if you don’t – you will stumble upon many gorgeous rice fields while traveling around Bohol anyways.

Bohol Travel Guide: Southeastern Sojourn – Alicia, Anda, and Candijay

No doubt, Bohol is one of the most beautiful and popular vacation destinations in the Philippines. In fact, in 2016, tourist arrivals hit 1-million mark, a surge by 39.7% from the previous year. This achievement is something that the island province should definitely be proud of.

So, you’ve been to Bohol, yes? Perhaps, you have visited the breathtaking Chocolate Hills; went for a fun Loboc River cruise; got acquainted with the cutest primate on earth, Tarsiers; and, had a soothing sun bath in the powdery white sand beaches of Panglao.

Now, you think you’ve experienced all the fun activities Bohol has to offer? Well, think again.😀 The fact is, there’s a whole lot more in Bohol waiting for you to discover.

In this post, I am sharing a travel guide to some places in Bohol that, perhaps, not as popular as the places where the above-mentioned attractions are located, but offer great experiences all the same. I take you to the southeastern part of the island province – Alicia, Anda, and Candijay.

Alicia, Anda, and Candijay

Together with Mabini and Guindulman, the municipalities of Alicia, Anda, and Candijay form part of the Southeastern Bohol. They are bordered to the north by the Municipality of Ubay, the Bohol Channel  (Bohol Sea) in the east and south, the town of Pilar and other municipalities of Central Bohol to the west. Tagbilaran City is a two-hour ride away, west.

Just like other places in Bohol that have been attracting tourists, these municipalities used to be a pretty laid back community. Locals just had their daily routine of farming, fishing, livestock raising. However, today, they have become more and more active in the sector of tourism as their places are receiving more visitors – local and foreign alike (thanks to social media). In fact, as of this writing, the Alicia is set to open another activity that tourists can try – Caving.

Things to do in Alicia

Trekking to the summit of Alicia Panoramic Park (aka Binabaje Hills) provides a bird’s eye view of this part of the province. With its rolling hills covered by a sea of green, you surely find it refreshing.

The municipality of Alicia offers a day tour that allows you to trek to the summit of this park. The entrance fee is 40 pesos; the obligatory tour guide fee is 500 pesos, which is good for 5 people and below.

Where to stay in alicia, bohol.

Alicia is a small town that is yet to rise as a prime destination for tourists. So you cannot expect high end accommodations as of yet. However, you can find a number of decent homestays at reasonable prices (price ranges from 300 to 500 per night).

Note: It is recommended that you contact Miss Godelia Lumogdang, the tourism officer of the Municipality of Alicia, prior to your visit. She will help you not only in ensuring your trek schedule but also in assigning a registered tour guide, as well as a place to stay. (contact #: 09308233330 )

• To save more time and to go all of the attractions without too much hassle, it would be a lot better if you just find a habal-habal driver that is willing to ferry you to all of the destinations (just like me, I only had one habal-habal driver/tourist guide that brought me to all of my destinations, except for the ride from Alicia town proper to the jumping off point of the Alicia Panoramic Park).  Note: If you’d ask for a recommendation for a habal-habal driver, I would recommend Kuya Edwin Balahay at +63912-405-9855 
• Instead of buying a bottled water from time to time, it is a lot better if you just bring a tumbler with you and just do a refill at places where potable water is available. This way, you save some amount and at the same time, you help the environment. (What I did was, I had with me a tumbler that I brought all the way from Davao, my hometown, and I just refilled at drinking fountain, or at a restaurant where was free water from a dispenser or from a water vending machine sold at a much lower price).
• You are a visiting tourist, it is incumbent upon you to respect the people and their culture as well as the environment. Be friendly as much as possible and leave no traces, bring back with you your trash.

Bohol Tour via Tubigon – Itinerary and Highlights

We visited Bohol again! The first time we visited the land of chocolate hills was 2011, then again just last June 2016.

We followed a different Bohol Tour itinerary for our first and second time. I’ll be laying out the highlights of the second tour. Hopefully it can give light in case you are confuse whether to choose Tubigon Port over Tagbilaran Port as your entry point.

The Bohol 2011 vacation saw us travelling via Oceanjet fast craft from Cebu to Tagbilaran, and then tour of Bohol with Carmen town as the furthest tourist spot stop. Our visit to Bohol this 2016 we sailed from Cebu to Tubigon via Lite Ferries, a RORO slow boat, first stop was Sagbayan Peak in the town of you guess it, Sagbayan. 😀

Bohol Tour with pick-up from Tagbilaran Port – the tour fee for this was P2,500 last 2011. We checked with our van driver and he said, it is now P3,000 but you can try to haggle the rate. Some smaller van services outfits grants discounts.

Rates are regulated by the Bohol Tourism office. You can ask your van driver to see the tour and tariff rates, tourism accredited drivers have this laminated tariff cards. Based on the rate card, you’ll know how much the rate for specific tours or van services from one point to another.

Example: Pick-up from Panglao with Dauis mini- tour, the rate is P800 including a visit to Dauis Chart and the well or balon inside the church that was uncovered after the 2013 earthquake with a sidetrip to the Hinagdangan Cave and Bohol Bee Farm.

For our 2016 BOHOL TOUR our group was picked-up from TUBIGON PORT, this was our itinerary:

• FAST CRAFT via TAGBILARAN, slow RORO BOAT via TUBIGON

Sail with Lite Ferries Shipping Line from Cebu to Tubigon. Ticket rate is P110 per passenger. Sailing time is about 2 and a half hours. Earliest morning trip is at 7 AM. Cebu Pier 1 terminal fee is P25/pax.

2. BOHOL TOUR STARTS!!!

Our group was picked up by the van service in Tubigon Port (we made prior arrangement a few days before through my aunt).

*There is a McDonald few meters from the port in case you took the 7 AM Lite Ferries boat and is hungry for breakfast.

First stop is Sagbayan Peak, entrance fee is P50/pax. Don’t miss trying their bibingka! Photoshoot opportunities: the complex is big with sections on tarsiers (we saw 2 tarsiers!) , butterfly, statues of animals, superheroes, and fairytale characters, viewpoint for the chocolate hills, and a restaurant.

Now, your van driver may say that the chocolate hills that you can see from Sagbayan Peak are the same chocolate hills one can see in Carmen town, and in his eagerness to help you save a bit of your tour budget, might suggest you skip Carmen town hills viewing. Chocolate Hills in Carmen entrance fee is P50/pax.

This I recommend: GO STILL TO CARMEN. The visible chocolate hills in Sagbayan Peak are far inferior to what you’ll see when you get to the main Carmen viewpoint. If you are a first timer in BOHOL, the iconic Chocolate Hills view are in Carmen, not in Sagbayan Peak. See the difference in the pics below:

**If I am to redo our tour this 2016, I would choose the Tagbilaran route even though fast craft tickets are more expensive than Lite ferries tickets. From Cebu you can take any of the fastcrafts: Supercat , OceanJet , Weesam Starcraft to enter Bohol via Tagbilaran.

Van tour rental if pick-up via Tagbilaran is P2,500 (included all tourist sites except Sagbayan Peak). Van rental if pick-up is via Tubigon is P4,500 (all tourist sites included). **You can negotiate the rates with the driver. Clue: NEGOTIATE! 😉

3. TOURIST SITE STOPS

These are the usual tourist sites in Bohol. These sites are included in the itinerary followed by tour operators and van drivers.

Sagbayan Peak (if you arrived via Tubigon only.)

Carmen Chocolate Hills Viewpoint (best way to see the famous hills!)

Manmade Forest (temperature becomes cooler!)

Habitat Bohol EcoPark (ice cream!!! And butterfly education for P30/pax entrance / tour fee. :))

Bamboo Hanging Bridge (Tenten and Serena had a moment here).

Rio Verde Tarsier Place (we skipped this since we saw tarsiers in Sagbayan Peak).

Luboc River (we skipped the Luboc River Cruise with lunch but we spent time on the Luboc bridge for photo-ops.)

Blood Compact Site (quick photo-op)

Baclayon Church (still undergoing rehabilitation)

Dauis Church (see the “miraculous well” inside the church itself)

Bohol Bee Farm in Panglao (ice cream!!! Load up on pasalubong too!)

Lastly, Panglao resort drop-off

4. PASALUBONG SHOPPING

If you arrived by way of Tubigon, request your driver to stop by the town of Albuquerque to buy kalamay of Bohol. This town makes the tastiest Bohol calamay as well as its cheapest there. Otherwise, buy your pasalubong calamay and peanut kisses just before you enter the Tagbilaran Port complex. You can still buy calamay and other Bohol pasalubong goodies inside the port but it’s more expensive there compared to the pasalubong stalls outside the port.

5. GOING HOME – ANOTHER VAN RENTAL

Van pick-up service from Panglao to Tagbilaran Port is another fee.

Are there public transpo? Yes, there are buses, but they are very rare . If you are alone, you can take a habal-habal, or chance upon a van driver who just drop-off guests in Panglao then rent him to take you to Tagbilaran port for a cheaper rate. This was what we did last 2011, we paid only P500, instead of P800 usual van hire rate for Panglao – Tagbilaran drop-off.

*The P800 rate comes with a Panglao and Dauis tour (Bee Farm, Dauis Church, Hinagdangan Cave if you didn’t have time for these sites on your Bohol Day Tour). The main Bee Farm is located in Panglao Island, scenic place and good food!

6. BOHOL TOUR RECOMMENDED DRIVER

I can recommend our van driver JUVAN, his cellphone number is 0912 4068224 . Nope, I don’t have any commission or freebies whatsoever. 🙂 But if you get his services, please tell him you read about it on Penfires, a blog by someone who was his guest along with her family who stayed in a resthouse in Brgy Libaong. Then ask for discount! *wink haha

I didn’t know him prior to the Bohol tour but he’s great. He was very accommodating when we made a special request to drop by the Island CityMall to pick-up some groceries, and we ended-up about 2 hours in the mall, the usual 5PMish end-of-tour was extended at no additional charge. Also, I left my hygiene pack in his van, he made sure I got it before leaving Bohol, intact. Inihabol pa sa port . 🙂

He can also help you arrange a boat for Island Hopping if you want to go dolphin watching or visiting nearby islands to Panglao.

**I can’t recommend a particular hotel for this vacation since we stayed at a relatives’ rest house in Panglao Island. But if you need to find a hotel in Bohol, check out these discounted offers from Agoda: Low price to medium price hotels and resorts or this one Bohol Recommended Hotels .

On the return trip, we’ve chosen to sail with STARCRAFT, 1 pm departure schedule. Fastcraft fare was P440, Tagbilaran terminal fee is P20/pax. Sailing time 2 hours and will dock in Cebu Pier 3.

Hope this helps you a bit if you are debating whether to get to Bohol from Cebu via Tubigon or via Tagbilaran.

thank you for sharing your experience 😉 my partner and I will be going to bohol next month and we’ll be staying at panglao island just for an overnight.. we dont have much time so we’re planning to have a coutryside daytour first before going to panglao island to save time and energy.. do you think it’s much better if we take the cebu-tubigon route? is it nearer to carmen? i was thinking if we will have the tagbilaran route, it will be a waste of time travelling back and forth going to carmen chocolate hills.. im really confused right now.. lol

Hi Jean, I strongly suggest that you take the Tagbilaran route. 🙂 We’ve done it that way the first time we visited Bohol for an overnight stay. Also, it can save you more time if you will skip the Dauis Church and Hinagdanan Cave (both in Panglao Island) in your tour.

Recently tried the via Tubigon port, so far the boat was fast, took only about an hour and 15 mins…. we were there last June 2017….

Too bad you were not able to explore Tubigon, there is a island hopping service that we tried which brought us to several islands. The boat was beautiful too. Much better than me experience in Panglao. You should try it on your next visit to bohol.

How to Get to Bohol

From manila to tagbilaran.

You can reach Bohol via plane, ferry, or bus. Out of all the options, taking the plane would be the fastest due to its 1-hour travel time. There are frequent flights from Manila to Bohol,   check for the cheapest fares here .

From Cebu City to Tagbilaran

Cebu is very near Bohol Island so a OceanJet Ferry is a good option to take. Traveling by sea will be cheaper than flying, and it’ll only take about 2 hours. This is a  popular route  among locals and tourists alike,  reserve your tickets beforehand here .

From Oslob to Panglao

No need to go back to Cebu City to catch a ferry to Bohol! Just ride   Apekop Travel’s modern boat from Oslob to Panglao . This route will save you more time and effort!  Click here to book your ride .

From Siquijor to Tagbilaran

From one paradise to another, this ferry route is a godsend to island hoppers.  Larena, Siquijor has ferries going to Tagbilaran, Bohol .  Tickets are also available for online booking .

Bohol Tourist Spots

Chocolate hills complex, carmen.

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 11:30 PM Entrance Fee: 50 PHP

How to Get There: From Tagbilaran’s Island City Mall, take a bus to Carmen. Once there, hire a motorcycle to take you to the complex.

Although swarming with people, you should not skip Bohol’s famed Chocolate Hills. To get to the viewing deck, you’ll have to climb a flight of stairs. Not a bad trade for a panoramic view of the hills! To see the Chocolate Hills in its brown color, visit during the dry months of November to May.

The easiest way to tick places off your Bohol bucket list is to join a tour. Aside from the Chocolate Hills, other Bohol tourist spots included are Baclayon Church, Bilar Man-made Forest, and Loboc River.  Book a Bohol Countryside Tour here.

Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, Corella

Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM Entrance Fee: 60 PHP

How to Get There: From Tagbilaran’s Dao Jeepney Terminal, take a Sikatuna jeep that stops by Corella. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Tarsier Sanctuary.

Loboc and Corella are the two places where you can visit the endangered tarsiers in Bohol. But which is better? Most tours will include the former because of its proximity to the Chocolate Hills. However, the conditions are less than ideal for the tarsiers. Responsible travelers prefer the one in Corella because it provides a more natural environment. The Corella Tarsier Sanctuary is also a foundation that has research and conservation efforts supported by the government so you know they’re legit!

Alona Beach, Panglao

Opening Hours: Always open Entrance Fee: None

How to Get There: From Tagbilaran Airport, there are taxis, vans, and tricycles that can take you to Panglao Island.

Alona Beach is undoubtedly Panglao Island’s most popular spot despite mixed reviews online. Some would advise you to skip it because it’s too touristy. But hey, no harm in visiting a free public beach right? The beachfront is lined with restaurants, massage areas, and dive shops. Don’t miss the sunset view of the sky painted with colorful hues. Even at night, Alona Beach is alive with music, drinks, and dancing!

Balicasag Island

How to Get There: From Panglao, arrange for a boat from the beach or your hotel to Balicasag Island.

Before reaching Balicasag Island, you can opt to go dolphin watching. You have a better chance of spotting these aquatic mammals during the early morning. At Balicasag Island you’ll have even more opportunities to observe sea life. Head to the opposite side of the beach (where there are no boats docked) to snorkel with fish, corals, reefs, and turtles. Watch your step because corals are shallow on this part of the beach.

With your rented boat, you might as well visit the neighboring Virgin Island and its sandbar! You can also book a boat tour with Klook which includes all of these destinations and activities.   Check it out here.

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces, Candijay

Entrance Fee: 50 PHP Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

How to get there: From Tagbilaran’s Dao Terminal, take a van or a bus bound for Ubay. Get off at Lungsod-Daan’s public market. Hire a motorcycle to Cadapdapan and other neighboring areas if you like.   Or you can join a tour that will take you around Candijay, Anda Beach, and the nearby waterfalls.

Not many know about the existence of Bohol’s rice terraces. Contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few scattered all over the island. The Cadapdapan Rice Terraces is a good choice because it’s near the Can-Umantad Falls and the Canawa Cold Spring if you fancy a visit.

A quick 15-minute trek is involved but it’s easy enough to be accomplished by kids and senior citizens alike. The Cadapdapan Rice Terraces is not as crowded as the other tourist spots in Bohol. If you’re lucky, you might get this view all to yourself!

Before we jump into all the best tourist spots in Bohol, let’s go over some practical information for visiting this beautiful island.

How to get to Bohol

How to get to Bohol from Manila by Air

It’s about 400 miles (644 kilometers) from Manila to Bohol. They are separated by a series of islands, straits, and patches of sea.

But, getting between the two cities is pretty quick if you fly to the Bohol-Panglao Airport (TAG).

Philippines AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, Cebgo all have nonstop flights that take about 1.5 hours and range from $40-$80 USD.

How to get to Bohol from Manila by Ferry

You can catch a ferry from Manila’s North Harbor to Cebu and another from Cebu to Tubigon, a seaport in Bohol. This takes about four hours.

How to get to Bohol from Cebu City

The easiest option to get from Cebu to Bohol is taking a ferry (and cheaper than flying from Manila).

The fast Cebu to Bohol ferry travel time is about 1.5-2 hours depending on where you are traveling in Bohol. It is comfortable and the best option, especially for tourists.

Bohol has three ferry ports; Ubay, Tubigon and Tagbilaran. Tagbilaran is located on the southwest side of the island and it’s the capital of the island with many hotels, shopping malls, and restaurants.

The best ferry company options for the fast option are SuperCat and OceanJet.

They depart from Cebu Pier 1, a tourist class ticket costs around 600-700 PHP (12-14 USD).

How Much Time Do You Need on Bohol

Bohol is the 10th largest island in the Philippines and it has a lot of things to to do. I was in Bohol for two days and was able to see most of the best tourist spots, but I didn’t have enough time to visit the beautiful beaches or snokel. I suggest at least 3 days in Bohol and if you want to do a bit of island hopping you’ll want even more time.

And now let’s get to the fun stuff! This Bohol travel guide shares the best tourist spots in Bohol, foods you should try, hotel options and more!

Let’s explore the best things to do in Bohol:

1. Visit the Chocolate Hills

The world-famous Chocolate Hills are located in the middle of the island, near the town of Carmen. There are about 1,200 or so symmetrical hills that turn cocoa-brown in the dry season. During the rainy season, the hills are bright green.

They are the Philippines’ 3rd most important National Geological Monument and have been called the Eight Wonder of the World.

The Chocolate Hills are the most popular tourist spot in Bohol and worth a visit.

There are 214 steps to get to the observation deck. This attraction is really more of a lookout. In fact, you can’t climb the hills. So, this is really about taking a few photos and admiring the unusual Chocolate Hills formations.

The entrance fee is 50 PHP (1 USD) per person.

2. Tarsier Conservation Area

Bohol is very famous for the Tarsier Conservation Area. The wide-eyed Philippine Tarsier is the world’s second-smallest primate — about the size of an adult palm and one of the top things to do in Bohol.

Tarsiers are officially recognized as endangered species. Tarsier are shy and nervous animals. Camera flashes, noise, being touched, and being kept in an enclosure can stress them out. Sadly, the stress leads to the tarsier hitting its head against trees, thus killing it because of its thin skull.

So, while they are fun to see in person and in the wild, it’s very important to stay quiet and not use flash photography.

You can take photos without the flash but touching them is strictly prohibited.

The entrance fee is 60 PHP (1.2 USD). A local guide will lead you through the jungle in a small group and he will help you spot the tarsiers. They are really small, like half the size of your hand so without the guide it would be really hard to see where they are.

3. Loboc River Jungle Cruise

The Loboc River Jungle Cruise includes a buffet lunch or dinner, music performed by a live guitarist, and performances from dancers. It’s a fun way to see some beautiful river views and experience some traditional Filippino entertainment.

Towards the end of the river cruise, your boat will stop at a location with of Filipina women and children dressed in traditional clothing who sing, play instruments and dance for the group.

There is even a small waterfall at the end of the cruise.

4. Visit The Beaches in Bohol

Alona Beach is the most famous beach in Bohol and located on Panglao Island. It has beautiful white sand and the water is clear turquoise. It’s a great swim beach.

Aside from the breathtaking views, there are lots of fun water activities that you can do in Alona Beach including snorkeling or diving.

Additional beautiful beaches in Bohol worth a visit are Doljo Beach, Momo Beach and Bolod Beach on Pangloa Island as well as Balicasag Beach on Balicasag Island.

5. Visit a Waterfall

Bohol has many beautiful waterfalls including The Secret Waterfall, Dimiao Twin Falls (Pahangog Falls) and Ingkumhan Falls.

Secret Falls involves a trek into the jungle to the waterfall and swimming hole. This is not on any tours that I know of and is more a local favorite. The falls are about 40′ feet and the water clear and warm. There are a few places where you can jump off and into the pool of water as well as some smooth rocks to slide down.

The twin falls near Dimiao also known as Pahangog Falls are another local favorite, but do take a bit of effort to access.

Once you arrive, there is about a 1/2 mile walk to the falls. The fee to enter the waterfall area is 20 PHP (0.4 USD) per person.

Ingkumhan Falls is a another favorite hidden gem on the island. Unlike the Twin Falls, the road to get there is not so challenging and the water is warm and beautiful.

Ingkumhan Falls is in a jungle, just a short ride inland from Bohol’s South Coast.

The falls are famous because you can swing yourself over the water on a huge rope and jump in. There are two men who work at the falls and help everyone who wants to try.

Getting to Ingkumhan Falls is pretty similar to the twin falls as you need to hike down on a super steep road as well.

The fee to enter the waterfall area is 20 PHP (0.4 USD) per person.

The most common way of exploring Bohol’s waterfalls and other tourist spots is to rent a scooter. This way you can cruise around freely and plan out your day at your own pace. Another option is to hire a local guide. I love this option because you have the chance to chat with a local and learn about more fun ‘hidden spots’ to explore.

6. Habitat Butterflies Conservation Center

The Habitat Butterflies Conservation Center is located in Bilar. If you like butterflies and other insects, it’s a fun, but quick stop to or from the Chocolate Hills.

A guide will walk you through the area and will point out butterflies, spiders, centipedes, caterpillars, birds, and flowers and fauna indigenous to the island.

The walk is short but if you like photography you can easily spend 20-30 minutes there.

This is one of the best Bohol tourist spots for nature lovers and is a must-see when visiting Bohol. It also includes a pretty awesome photo experience!

The entrance fee is 60 PHP (1.2 USD)

Snake Exhibit

This Conservation Center is split in two sections; the butterflies and snakes. Their most famous snake are the pythons. While they are huge, they seem to be pretty tame and they invite anyone who would like to take a photo in with the python. As you can see, I was trying to keep my eye on the snake!

This has been said to the biggest python in captivity, When I visited I was told it was 23 feet (7 meters) and 660 lbs (300 kg).

This was really fun and scary! Don’t worry, the pythons are tamed so they’ll just lie there while you take a picture.

7. Check Out Tropical Plants

I came across this Torch Ginger (Etlingera elatior) during a hike. This large plant has beautiful colorful blooms. It’s a tropic perennial that can grow 20 feet tall. 

Other beautiful botanical and tropical plants that are found in the Philippines are Ylang-ylang tree, vivid blue double-blossom Clitoria ternatea, Stargazer Lilly, Oleander and so many more!

Keep an eye out for gorgeous tropical plants at luxury hotels, on hikes, and in gardens.

8. Baclayon Church

Baclayon Church, also known as “The Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary Parish Church”, is the oldest Christian settlement in Bohol.

The Ave Maria Alter in the Baclayon Church is quite ornate and has a place for six statues. Baclayon was founded by the Jesuit priest Juan de Torres and Gabriel Sánchez in 1596.

This Roman Catholic Church has been officially declared a ‘National Cultural Treasure’ and is a National Historic Landmark.

It is one of the Philippines’ oldest Catholic churches.

9. Blood Compact Monument

It will only take a few minutes to stop and learn the story of this bronze structure. Set with the sea as the backdrop, the Blood Compact Monument features 5 soldiers gathered around a table making a toast.

In 1565, with a few drops of blood, a pact was made between Spanish General Miguez Lopez de Legazpi and the Native Filipino people who vowed to work together.

The gesture also signifies peace and friendship between the Spanish foreigners and the natives of Bohol.

There’s a short ut more thorough historical explanation near the monument to give you more information.

10. Eat Filippino Foods

One of my favorite reasons to travel is food! Filipino cuisine is a mix of different cultures; mostly Spanish, Chinese and American foods. It is considered by many as the original fusion cuisine.

In general, Filipino food is not spicy. But to me, it was very fresh and flavorful.

The national dish of the Philippines is adobo. Its name comes from the Spanish word “adobar,” meaning “marinade”.

Adobo is a meat, seafood, or vegetable marinated in vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves, and black peppercorns,

Humba is a braised pork dish that is similar to adobo. The difference is that humba is sweeter because fermented black beans are added to the sauce.

Fish soup called Tinola, was one of my favorite foods from the entire trip.

Best Time to Visit Bohol

The wet season starts late May and it lasts until the beginning of March, with June to November being the rainiest months . During these months you can expect 15 rainy days per month on average.

In Bohol, the dry season typically is between March and May, but you can still expect a little rain in this period too.

The temperature is always hot and humid in Bohol. The humidity is around 80% all year long, while the hottest months are April, May, and June.

Late December and Holy Week are peak seasons for locals so I’d say the best time to go would be from January to around Mid-March.

Bohol Hotels and Resorts 

There is a wide range of accommodation available in Bohol, from cheap hostels to luxury resorts. If you are visiting Bohol as a tourist the best places to stay are either in the capital city, Tagbilaran, or on Panglao Island.

Panglao Island is perfect if you want to stay close to the best beaches in Bohol. This small island is connected to the main island by a bridge and it is very easy to get there.

The best resorts are located in the southern part of the island, near the white sands of Alona beach and Bolod Beach.

Things to do & places to go in Ubay – Bohol

The town of Ubay in Bohol is known as one of the most progressive towns in the province and is known as an agricultural town. In fact, it is dubbed the Dairy Capital of Bohol .

Their farms and rolling terrain though, give a lot of opportunity for exploration!

Here are some of the places and things you can do in the town of Ubay:

1. relax at cambugsay healing hills.

One of the most scenic places in Ubay which (as its name implies) could heal your heartaches away.

Beside the dam is a venue for events and catering services managed by the community.

2. Take part in a Forestation Project

Together with the surrounding community, the place is on a mission to turn these barren hills into forests. This action will encourage biodiversity and will benefit the environment as well as the locals greatly.

3. Interact with farm animals at Ubay Stock Farm

This farm is said to be the oldest and largest government livestock facility in the country with an area of 3,600 hectares. Their farm animals range from cows, carabao, horses, chickens, turkeys, ducks, goats, and others.

Aside from seeing farm animals on this farm, you can also try horseback riding. The town has lots of horses and horsemen and seeing young kids riding horses is a norm!

4. Chill & drink buko at the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA)

The town is home to the PCA of Central Visayas. The place doesn’t just serve as an educational place for coconuts but also is a scenic place for picnics!

5. Eat ice cream from the Philippine Carabao Center

The reason why the town is the Dairy Capital of Bohol is because of its Carabao Centre which produces dairy products like ice cream, chocobao, pastries, and even soaps and other products. And their ice cream is a must-try!

6. Swim beside Floating Cottages

Another place that I like is Sinandigan Beach. They have floating cottages that you can stand by while you are swimming.

7. Have a sip of Bugnay Wine

The town has a vibrant market and sells a lot of crops and products at a reasonable cost. One thing you should try is Wild Bugnay Wine. This is a red wine made from the local version of blueberries.

How to go to UBAY from Tagbilaran

Going to Ubay is easy. If on a commute, there are hourly Buses and Vans at Tagbilaran Dao Bus Terminal. Going there will take around 3 hours with 150-200 pesos fare. A popular way to go around the town is via motorela a bigger version of a tricycle, and habal-habal (motorcycles).
