What Is Bruges Like?

The West Flemish city of Bruges is one of the most popular and romantic city break destinations in Belgium. Millions of visitors have been coming to the historic city centre for years. The moment you step into the city centre, it looks like you are walking into an open-air museum .

The historic heart of Bruges is made up out of a large collection of old streets , atmospheric squares and beautiful European facades that seem to take you back to earlier times. The sound of the horses still walking through the streets reinforces this feeling.

These days, horses are not a necessary means of transport for the Belgians, but are used to show tourists the city on horse-drawn carriages. Bruges has made a wise decision in making the city centre largely car-free. This ensures that pedestrians have ample room, provided that they take into account the aforementioned horse-drawn carriages and also the many cyclists who sometimes make their way through the crowd at relatively high speed. But you’re already used to that as you’re travelling from Amsterdam.

Things To Do In Bruges

Bruges is a charming medieval city in Belgium that is well worth a visit. Here are just a few of the many things to see and do in Bruges:

The Bruge Weavers’ Guild House is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of textile production. The guild operated from this handsome building on Bruges’ main square from the 14th century until the early 20th century. Today, it houses a museum with exhibits on the city’s weaving traditions.

Lace making is another important part of Bruges’ history, and the Lace Centre Brugge is the perfect place to learn more about it. The centre offers demonstrations by professional lace makers, as well as classes for those who want to try their hand at this delicate craft.

Food & Drinks

The Belgians are also known for their delicious mussels and great beers, like Leffe , Palm & La Chouffe. Give it a try when you are in Bruges.

No visit to Bruges would be complete without taking a boat ride along one of its canals. These peaceful waterways offer a unique perspective on the city, and provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Whether you’re interested in history, crafts, or simply enjoying some fresh air, Bruges has something to offer everyone. So do yourself a favour and pay this beautiful city a visit.

We will visit, among others, the Town Hall, the Cathedral of Saint Bavon, the Church of Saint Michael, the Guild House of the masons and the Castle of the Counts of Flanders. We will also stroll along the famous grain and herb canals, both most magical places in the city.

Yes, yes, as you will see we are not exaggerating when we say we will take you to two of the most beutifull cities of the world. Ghent is the city with the highest density of historical buildings in Europe and the medieval center of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So what do you think? The city that gave birth to Carlos V, a true influencer of the era and one of the most powerful people in human history. Ghent oozes history from each of its corners, and to see how castles, cathedrals, towers and canals blend with the current lifestyle is quite a spectacle.

It is unnnecessary to even present the city when it comes to Bruges. Its historic center is considered the best preserved medieval center in the world. More than once we have been asked if its streets and buildings are real, because they seem to be taken from a movie set, but yes, they are as real as life itself. Prepare your camera because you are going to take Instagram worthy photos. We guarantee it!

Belgium Tours from Amsterdam

Bruges. Belgium Tours from Amsterdam

Our Belgium Tours from Amsterdam travel across Flanders: Historically, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg were known as the Low Countries.

Brussels , one of the greatest cities in Europe. T he heart of the historical city is the Grande Place , a magnificent collection of guild houses and the decorative town hall. Brussels has much more to offer than the Manneken Pis and Eurocrats. Antwerp has character. Diamonds, chocolate, and the big cathedral. But Antwerp is also all about fashion, design, music. It is Belgium’s best-kept secret: It’s art and history are very inspiring. Traditional and modern: The impressive MAS Museum and the gothic cathedral. The Grote Markt is beautifully surrounded by the Town Hall and the houses of the Guilds built in the 16th century. Another highlight is the Cathedral of Our Lady. It contains works by the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens. Bruges is the number-one postcard destination. Sometimes, like Amsterdam, called ‘Venice of the North’. The little bridges and the parks make you feel like in medieval times. A little city of canals and bridges and medieval Flemish architecture. The best way to see the city is by foot or from a horse-drawn carriage. Ghent is a small city with 297 bars, 50.000 students, a live music scene with free concerts every day. The Graslei is one of the most scenic places in the old city center. Flanders is the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. Flanders Fields shows also the key sites of World War I including battlefields, bunkers, and the town of Ypres.

If you join us on one of our Belgium Tours from Amsterdam, Holland Private Tours can pick you up at Amsterdam Airport, or your hotel.

Important to know is that the drive to Bruges is 2,5 to 3 hours. But absolutely worthwhile! With our Mini Bus 8 seater. Perfect for small-sized groups.

Hi, I'm Gerrit

I enjoy sharing useful tips about the beauty of this county.

Do You wonder how to get from Amsterdam to Bruges?

Then this article is written for you. In this article, I go over how to get from Amsterdam to Bruges .

I am a Dutch tour guide, but I also have a crush on Bruges (even though it’s in Belgium and not the Netherlands, it’s right next door). It’s easy to travel from Amsterdam to Belgium .

You have different options on how to get to Bruges from Amsterdam : you can go by train, bus, car, and yes, also by tour bus.

Bruges (Brugge in Dutch) is a gorgeous old medieval city, and I have visited it many times before.

It’s not good for me with all the delicious chocolate , freshly warm baked waffles, and the alluring outside terraces for a drink and a snack. Maybe that’s why I love it so much.

Even with all the tourists there, you can’t help but fall in love with Bruges once you’ve been.

It’s the number one requested destination by customers to include in their itinerary. I have been asked this question so often I thought, why not write an article about it?

You’re reading it now 🙂

I understand why Amsterdam and Bruges are cities with the fairy tale magic feel about them.

TIP: Consider that the shortest travel time to Bruges still takes 3 hours each way. So, you’ll travel 6-8 hours of your day.

If that sounds like too much, consider Delft as a Bruges alternative .

Curious? Check out my post on Delft: Delfts Magic: 10 Must-Do Things To Do In Delft ✨

It is a beautiful tiny city near The Hague and Rotterdam that is just as lovable and only one hour from Amsterdam.

Do you still want to go to Bruges? I don’t blame you. If you’re in a hurry, here is a quick rundown of your travel options to Bruges :

  • By Train : The quickest option. Travel time: 3 hours from Amsterdam to Bruges.
  • By Coach : This takes 4 1/2 hours but is significantly cheaper.
  • By Car : A car takes slightly longer than the train 3 1/2 hours on average.
  • By Tour Bus : Surprisingly enough a tour can be smart for a day trip.

You can book any of the transportation options from above right here:

  • I recommend this is the bus tour – it’s professional and goes frequently.
  • Book your international ticket for the train from Amsterdam to Bruges here.
  • Check timetables and prices for coach (bus) to Bruges here.
  • I recommend Rental Cars and Discover Cars for Rental Cars to Bruges.

Or stick around, and we go over each option individually.

In the article you learn all about how to get from Amsterdam to Bruges the beautiful medieval city in Belgium.

Table of Contents

Understanding your options.

You have four different options when it comes to how to get from Amsterdam to Bruges: by train, bus, (rental) car, or take a Bruges Tour from Amsterdam.

If you don’t like to travel on your own, I recommend traveling to Bruges on a tour . The tour I recommend leaves early and returns late. Leaving you enough time to discover Bruges in a meaningful way.

But if you don’t mind traveling by yourself one of the most convenient ways to travel is by train .

The Amsterdam to Bruges train journey takes under 3 hours, and you’ll need to transfer trains one or two times.

Prices range from €30 to €100 one-way, depending on when you book your tickets to Bruges and the class of travel. 2nd class has the cheapest prices, but will also be busier and have smaller seats.

Traveling by coach is a good alternative if costs are a factor. From Amsterdam, Sloterdijk train station, direct buses leave multiple times daily and take 4 1/2 hours to Bruges. Bus ticket prices from Amsterdam to Bruges are usually half compared to train prices.

Renting a car allows you to move at your own pace and make stops as you wish. If you’re going to sites in the surrounding areas of the countryside, a rental car can be a smart decision.

Traveling From Amsterdam To Bruges By Train

Thalys at Amsterdam. You can take it to Antwerp or Brussels and transfer there to Bruges.

You can take either the Eurostar high-speed train or the IC Brussels to Belgium (Amsterdam to Brussels), both of which travel on high-speed lines. Travel time is about the same.

There are no direct services from Amsterdam to Bruges and back. Your trip always requires a minimum of one transfer.

You  travel either via Antwerp or Brussels, depending on your departure time. Sometimes, you also need to transfer at Ghent.

When you book your ticket, it will tell you the total  travel time  and how often – and where – to transfer.

If you’d like to travel with the high-speed Thalys train , then look out for these connections. But Thalys train tickets are usually a bit higher priced than Intercity Brussels, which runs on the high-speed track but look like a regular train.

The first train departs from Amsterdam, leaves at 7:11 a.m., and gets you to Bruges at 10 a.m. Trains also stop at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam. The last Bruges to Amsterdam train back is at 7:58 p.m. and arrives at Amsterdam Central Station at 10:44 p.m.

PS: The information above was correct on the last update date at the top of this article, but timetables can change, so check the official railways website. Just enter your travel dates, and you will see actual departure and arrival times and current pricing.

As you can see, the travel time from Amsterdam to Bruges takes about 3 hours.

That leaves you with 9 hours of free time in Bruges. You can also take a train one hour later or return an hour earlier and still have plenty of time.

There are many options to take. However, you may want to stick to the times above to maximise your time in Bruges.

All trains leave from the  Amsterdam Central Station. The Bruges train station is just outside of the city center. It makes for a pleasant 15-minute walk, mainly through the old town. Or you can take a taxi to the central square or a local bus.

I prefer the walk, but there are good alternatives if that is not an option for you.

The Lowest Priced Debit Card For Travelers

One of my travel hacks  is the WISE borderless debit card. This is  the most international debit card in the world . Spend abroad with the real exchange rate. I use this card myself for all my overseas trips and saves a lot of money!

Wise Debit Card

Traveling by train allows you to enjoy a comfortable ride while looking out the window and watching the Dutch and Belgian countryside pass you.

What I always appreciate about this mode of transport is that I do not have to pay attention to traffic . I can just read. And walk around to stretch my legs.

Plus, enjoy amenities like onboard free WiFi, making your journey more enjoyable.

I always travel 1st class on this journey. It’s relatively quieter, and the seats are wider and a little more comfortable. It’s worth the premium (about 50%) for me.

Tickets start as low as €30 one-way in 2nd class, and the lowest fare is €50 in 1st class. But those are usually only available months in advance.

These early bird fares go quickly. Prices can go up to triple that amount the closer to the departure date you book on popular services.

Intercity direct trains at Rotterdam Central station.

My advice: book your tickets in advance, as much as possible for the best prices and special deals available.

Bookings come with seat reservations for the first part of your journey between The Netherlands and Belgium if you travel on Thalys. For the domestic leg in Belgium, or if you travel on IC Brussels, there are no seat reservations.

You can buy tickets online from Amsterdam to Bruges here from NS International, the official website of the Dutch Railways.

An Amsterdam to Bruges day trip by train is possible and relatively easy.

Amsterdam to Bruges Bus

There are several direct long-distance buses from Amsterdam to Bruges . These are all operated by Flixbus.

The bus leaves from Amsterdam Sloterdijk railway station. So you do need to go there first. The bus trip takes 4 1/2 hours with two stops, in Rotterdam and Antwerp—however, there is no need to transfer.

If you take the first bus at 5:45 a.m., you get to Bruges just after 10 a.m. That is early! So, you still have your day.

If you prefer to go later, the bus is only viable for multi-day trips to Bruges .

Traveling by coach compared to train does save you money. Ticket prices are usually half. You can buy a ticket for the bus from Amsterdam to Bruges here (and look at the journey planner).

Amsterdam to Bruges by Car

It’s easy to travel from Amsterdam to Bruges by car . You have two options, first, you travel south (A2 > A27) to Antwerp.

From there, you can take the North Ring Road . Passing a tunnel that charges a toll. Or you can drive via Ghent.

The 2nd route is a bit longer, but I prefer this route (over Ghent).

The first route – crossing the toll tunnel in Antwerp – is a bit faster but an uncomfortable road at the end. It’s not all motorway .

If you travel over Ghent, it’s a motorway all the way . I like that better.

Renting a car in The Netherlands is straightforward. But I do have some tips.

First, I would not recommend renting from a location in Amsterdam City Center. I would travel to the airport instead by train and pick up my car there.

Traffic in Amsterdam is chaotic and slow . You don’t want to be involved in an accident within the first minutes of your rental or stuck on a small one-way street behind a garbage truck.

You can access the motorway from the airport immediately , making the journey much less stressful.

Once in Bruges, you can park at large parking lots on the outskirts of town. From there, you can usually walk or take a shuttle. The parking fee of a few euros includes bus transportation to and from the old town.

Parking is signposted when exiting the motorway.

You can also park in parking garages in the old town at higher prices, but prices are still more reasonable compared to Amsterdam.

Still, I would opt for the parking lots. Driving in an old town is a hassle, and getting into a traffic jam is easy.

Find the lowest price for Car rental in the Netherlands

For the best car rental rates , I suggest checking both Rental Cars and Discover Cars. I often go with Rental Cars, but it’s worth comparing both.

Taking a Guided Tour Bus to Bruges

Gorgeous view in Bruges, Belgium.

I am usually not the biggest fan of guided bus tours . I find them always a little stereotyping. But at the same time, I do see their value.

You get where you need to go without worrying about anything yourself.

Your transportation is taken care of, and a live tour guide can tell your stories and anecdotes.

Recently, I have been on this Zaanse Schans windmill tour myself, and although it was very touristy, it was also a lot of fun.

This is the tour company I recommend for Amsterdam to Bruges tours . They run tours almost daily.

This Amsterdam to Bruges bus tour includes a one-hour guided city walk, and on top of that, you have 4 to 5 hours of free time.

Enough to take a boat ride, buy chocolates, and take in the beauty of this city.

Another smaller company also runs day tours from Amsterdam to Bruges by coach . They’re more affordable, but they don’t run as often.

Find A Place To Stay In Bruges

Find accommodation in Bruges for the lowest prices on your favorite platform. What's great about this map is that it shows both Hotels , as VRBO rentals (AirBNB but then cheaper).

Update your (intended) travel dates for accurate prices . TIP: Zoom out on the map (-) in the bottom right corner. This will show more options and availability.

I love the things I learn by reading your blog! Thank you! This sounds like such a lovely place.

I’m so happy to hear that, that is why I create the site in the first place. If you get to Bruges I hope you’ll have a magical time there!

This sounds so great – especially the boat tour!

Bruges is magical, Sue. When you go on the boat tour, I hope you will enjoy it tremendously.

We are planning a trip to Amsterdam (and a few other european cities) later this year and hadn’t considered going to Bruges! But having read your article (I have been stalking your site over the last few days!) I am quite interested in taking a detour into Belgium, It looked beautiful so I did a bit of a google and it looks so quaint! Thank you for introducing me to new ideas.. I can still learn even at my age 😉

🤣 one of the best things learning new things. Bruges is so cute, and not that far from the Netherlands. But it is 4 hours each way on average so my tip would also be don’t plan to do too much or it will be overwhelming and not as enjoyable. If you have enough space in your calendar absolutely go, it’s beautiful. But if you have to squeeze it in, then go for a city closer to Amsterdam with similar levels of cuteness like Amersfoort (30 min), Delft (60 min), or Deventer (75 min). I love you’re finding this website helpful, that’s why I create it.

Netherlands

The Netherlands (or Holland) may be a small country, but it`s filled with world-famous icons. This country is famous for its bulb fields, windmills, cheese markets, wooden shoes, canals of Amsterdam, masterpieces of Old Masters, Delft Blue earthenware, innovative water management, and millions of bicycles. As you explore the Netherlands you`ll find photogenic spots at every nook and cranny, a hipster coffee scene, an up and coming food scene, and loads of wonderful museums. While its most well-known city is Amsterdam, there are plenty of other beautiful cities that you will want to explore as well.

Trip Summary

tours from amsterdam to bruges and ghent

Easygoing, liberal Amsterdam is "different." Its citizens, bubbling along happily in their multiracial melting pot, are not so easily poured into the restrictive molds of trade and industry. More important, you can enjoy Amsterdam, its culture, history, and beauty, without stretching the limits of your credit cards. Few skyscrapers mar the clarity of the sky and the populace mostly walks or bikes from place to place. The historic center recalls Amsterdam's Golden Age as the command post of a vast trading network and colonial empire, when wealthy merchants constructed gabled residences along neatly laid-out canals. Visit Dam Square, Anne Frank House, Bloemenmarkt, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Canal Belt, Jordaan, Red Light District and so much more!

Antwerp is a small metropolis, but it's definitely a vast treasure trove of adventures, cultures, and experiences! Over the years up to today, people have called it a lot of things: the city of diamonds, the city of fashion, the city on the Scheldt, the city of Rubens, and the port city, and it is definitely all of these things, as well as being a city full of charm, culture and sophistication. If you enjoy engaging museums and galleries, excellent gastronomy, hunting down street art and sculptures, alongside sipping some of Belgium's finest beers in trendy bars and old-school cafes, then this is the city for you. Visit the Grand Place (Grote Markt), Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp Zoo, Chocolate Nation, Museum aan de Stroom (MAS), Rubens' House (Rubenshuis), Red Star Line Museum, and so much more!

The magnificent old city of Ghent was one of the biggest cities in Western Europe at the end of the Middle Ages, renowned for its textile industry. Today it is the third biggest city of Belgium and one of the most beautiful ones. Much of the city's medieval architecture remains intact and is remarkably well preserved. Interesting highlights are the Saint Bavo Cathedral with the Ghent Altarpiece, the belfry, the Gravensteen castle, and the splendid architecture along the old Graslei harbor. The city of Ghent also houses three beguinages, recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, and numerous churches, among which the Saint-Jacobs church and the Saint-Nicolas Church are the most beautiful examples. Visit the Cathedral of St. Bavo, Gravensteen Castle, The Belfry, Graslei, Korenmarkt, Saint Michael's Church and Sint-Michielsbrug, Korenlei Canal, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Ghent, Old Market Area, Vismarkt and Kraanlei, Ruins of Sint-Baafsabdij, and so much more!

With the city center closed off to cars, all the architectural and artistic treasures, folklore, chocolate shops, lace boutiques, and ambient restaurants the unforgettable city of Bruges can be easily explored on foot, by boat ride along quiet canals, or by horse-drawn carriage among cobblestone streets. Take your time and fully enjoy what this city has to offer, there is so much to experience in this city that has also made the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Visit the Bruges' Markt (main square), Belfry, Basilica of the Holy Blood, Stadhuis (Town Hall), Liberty of Bruges, Groeninge Museum, Church of Our Lady, Memling Museum, Sint Jansspitaal, Beguinage, Dijver Mansions, Minewater Lake, De Hale Maan Brewery, and so much more!

Brussels is sumptuous, historic and luxuriously cozy. What makes Brussels special? For visitors, it's full of delights - Grand Place, mussels with chips, pralines, under crowded museums, intimate hotels, Art Nouveau, Horta, Tintin and unbelievable beers. Modern edifices are only a few steps from the cobbled streets, splendid cafés, and graceful Art Nouveau architecture that speak to the city's eventful past. The city's spirit survives in traditional cafes, bars, bistros, and restaurants. Whether elegantly Art Nouveau or eccentrically festooned with posters, curios, and knickknacks, such centuries-old establishments provide a warm, convivial ambience that is peculiarly Belgian. Enjoy the Grand-Place, Cantillon Brewery, Mini-Europe, Belgian Comic Strip Center, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Saint-Michel Cathedral and so much more!

Prepare for a once-in-a-life-time experience in two of the most cosy and warm cities of Europe . Imagine yourself travelling through Belgium, one of the mandatory visits in the UE, and missing Bruges and Ghent. Be ready, since we are going to make you an offer you can not miss. Come along and discover it!

Lugares destacados

Bruges and Ghent are two of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Both are located in Belgium, so in a single day you can visit them completely and in a simple way. We assure you that this is one of the most impressive excursions you can imagine.

The medieval world and all its jewels will be displayed before you. In this way, you will discover why they are a World Heritage Site and also why they are two of the greatest prides of Belgians. You are ready? Come with us!

We hope you had a good rest, because your trip is about to start . We’ll meet you in Brussels downton at 8:30 am, so be sure to be there punctual! From here on your adventure begins and you’ll travel directly to Bruges . You will be aching to get there, cause believe us when we say that this city is unique .

The city will receive you with his first attraction, the Lake of Love , and just to clarify: The name’s not casual. This place is a little heaven on earth designed to captivate the hearts of those who contemplate it. Make sure you have your camera ready! From there, you’ll get to the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde, one of the most iconic places is Bruges and one of the pieces that conforms to the World Heritage that this city is taking care of.

You’ll also get to take a walk on the Walpein’s square while you admire the church of Our Lady of Bruges , where the sculpture of the Madonna and a Child created by Michelangelo. An opportunity you can't miss to see one of the best sculptures of Miguel Angel .

The Gruuthuse Museum is also one of the stop s we’ll make on our road to the center of the city. This amazing place keeps some of the hidden artwork gems of the city , so make sure you visit it before you leave Bruges -if your heart can survive leaving the Venice in the North-.

Before arrival at the Rosary Quay, one of the hotspots for taking a picture or a selfie -we know y’all will take A LOT of selfies there -, you’ll get to cross the Saint Boniface bridge, another place known for its unrivalled beauty and the gorgeous views of the canals .

At this point we’ve arrived at the main protagonist of Bruges: The Historic Center. Declared Humanity’s Heritage in the year 2000 and full of mindblowing facades , this part of the city is its biggest charm. On Burg's Square, the beating heart of the city, you’ll be able to enjoy the true essence of Bruges and also learn a piece of its history.

In there, you have to absolutely make sure to place your eyes on the Basilica of the Holy Blood. This outstanding edification is one of the most eye-catching things to see in Bruges, so you must totally not miss it. Built in the 12th century, it was destroyed and later reconstructed in the 16th century in a Gothic Style. Even though, in the 19th century, it suffered another reform that transformed the place in the current Basilica .

For last -but not least-,  we’ll see La Grote Markt, the main square of Bruges . There, you will see the famous Belfry of Bruges, an imponent medieval bell tower of 83 meters of height known for its carillon bells, which announce a big variety of events in the city. This city will blow your mind!

Leaving our hearts at Bruges, it's time to lose our minds at Gante . Heading towards one of the best preserved mediaeval cities of the old continent, we’re going to get amused by one of the best historical centers of europe . This city was the second most populated in Europe during the 16th century, and this is the reason why it is so well preserved.

During our trip on Gante, our guide will show us the historic centre of the city, where we’ll meet the Town Hall, whose facade will shock you all (in a good way).  From there you’ll see the three main towers in Gante. One is in the Saint Bavo's Cathedral , the first one you’ll see. This 89 meters tall building, is where the Diocese of Gante is located, and receives the name of Saint Bave of Ghent. Also, inside, is the well-known ‘ Adoration of the Mystic Lamb ’ , a polyptych altarpiece considered a masterpiece and one of the world treasures .

Nearby is the second tower, the Belfry of Ghent , a 91 meters tall building placed right in the heart of the city. On top of it (if you have a keen eye) you’ll see the symbol of the city , an imponent Drake.

Finally we’ll reach the third tower , St. Nicholas Church, one of the oldest and most relevant places of the city. Near the bustling Korenmarkt (Wheat Market), the church quickly became popular between the different trading guilds of the market, and in response the church builded chapels for some of them. His tower, the third, completes the sky view of the city, and its also a mandatory place to visit at Gante .

But this is not the end of it, you’ll also get to see the Gravensteen (literally translated as "The Castle of the Counts") and the canals of the town. You’ll also visit the Meat Market and the Fish Market , both amazing places to see as a way of ending a perfect visit to Gante.

This city will blow your mind for sure with its unique beauty and its amazing constructions before you go back to Brussels, so be ready to never want to go home!

Don't miss this opportunity to discover two of the most impressive and gorgeous cities of Europe, and get your tickets now for an unforgettable experience with our tour. Take your chance!

  • teresa Travelled as a group 13 · May · 2022 13 · May · 2022 It was too fast pace. It would be better to have the whole time with the guide & take it easy. Versus being in a hurry to do everything in one hour. The fact the bus tour was mostly in Spanish & didn’t translate the recommendations in English that were given to the Spanish speakers. It seems the bus driver is also irritable or in a hurry from what the tour guide said — bus driver never said anything tho. 13 · May · 2022 Day Trip to Bruges and Ghent

We also talk about its famous Beginning and its fascinating stories. Also, if you like beer, it is a paradise for lovers of hops and barley. We will see the second tallest brick tower in the world, the first work of Michelangelo and the love side, which was the first pier of the medieval city. Chocolate is also relevant in our tour. We will visit a local chocolate shop that produces its products in an artisanal way. You will also have free time to visit the city and taste its gastronomy. Read more

Our Guide was Marc and he was excellent. We set off on time and had a photo stop at the Atomium before going to Antwerp then Ghent. The walking tours by Marc were really interesting and just the right pace. Free time in both places was the right amount of time. Coach arrived back about 18.45. • Tanq76 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disorganized/Driver needs to treat tourist fairly I’d like to start my review with the positive side. English speaking tour guide: Bruno was amazing! Helpful & polite. Spanish speaking tour guide: Awful!!! Disorganize… Bus driver: Paolo, the culprit of our bad day… “Buendia” simply means “Good day”!!! I wish it started our day that way. We got to the central station 15 mins before the tour starts, checked in with our tour guide (Bruno). We waited ‘til we were told to go the bus assigned to us. We found out, there’s a Spanish speaking group in the same bus. All is good upon knowing that. Bruno pointed us to where the bus is parked so we went ahead (5 of us) walked with the group. We understand it’s first come first serve when it comes to seat choices( it’s not our first rodeo joining a tour group) . As we get closer to the bus, we formed a line, my friend asked is this the bus to to Dinant & going to Luxemburg? The driver (Paolo) said; STOP 🛑. I was behind her, the driver also said to me.. WAIT…Spanish speaking group were coming with LUCIA(the tour guide) I kid you not, the driver/Poolo.. directed the Spanish speaking group to go ahead get in the bus… Seriously! We didn’t get a memo that there’s such a thing… Spanish speaking group first. As far as we know, we paid the same… arrived ahead on time, waited in line to get in the bus… and to just HEAR from the driver to STOP 🛑 and WAIT? Is this how Buendia tours operates? We’ve travelled all over the world book with several/variety of tours.. this is the first time we were awfully treated. That LUCIA, should have directed her group… girl, seats are first come first serve bases. Lucia & Paolo, we’re awful. Our point is, would you have treated us differently if we look Caucasian? It’s unfortunate because we understand Spanish too… and you treated us that way. We we’re Asian American, we follow rules. We were 8 minutes late leaving from Dinant because the other group wasn’t on time… there you go Lucia. I will NEVER recommend BUENDIA tours… It’s really a disappointing start of the day for us… but considering how far we traveled to get to the Netherlands… 🇳🇱 we had to shake off this unfair treatment we got. How to Travel from Amsterdam to Ghent by Train, Bus, and Car

tours from amsterdam to bruges and ghent

Tu xa Ha Noi / Getty Images

Ghent may not get the international recognition of more popular cities like Brussels or Bruges, but this town of a quarter-million people is an under-the-radar alternative in Belgium, known for its quaint charm, historical architecture, and delicious beers. It's also a university town, and the student population keeps Ghent lively late into the night. It's only a little over 200 miles from Amsterdam, so it's easy to reach from the Dutch capital by train, bus, and car.

The train is usually the first choice of travel for most travelers, but in this case, the bus is direct, cheaper, and sometimes faster. Most travelers consider the train to be more comfortable, and it's still a perfectly viable option, especially if you want to explore Antwerp where you have to connect trains. If you want the freedom to explore the surrounding area, you can also rent a car and get to Ghent in around three hours.

How to Get from Amsterdam to Ghent

Even though the two cities are relatively close, there are no direct trains connecting Amsterdam and Ghent, so you'll need to make a transfer in Antwerp. Tickets can be bought directly from Belgium's national rail service , and you can choose between a faster option or a cheaper option. You'll also see trains with more than one stop, but avoid those unless you want to visit the intermediate cities.

When entering the station names on the reservation page, you want to use "Amsterdam Central" and "Gent-Sint-Pieters."

  • Faster Option : The faster option starts with a high-speed Thalys train to Antwerp where you'll change to the slower IC train onto Ghent. The total time on the train is about two hours and 10 minutes, plus whatever time you need to transfer. The high-speed Thalys train gets more expensive as your travel date gets closer, and tickets start around $40 when booked well in advance. However, last-minute reservations can be significantly more expensive.
  • Cheaper Option : You can skip the high-speed train altogether and just take the standard IC train for both legs of the journey. You'll still need to switch trains in Antwerp, and the total journey takes about an hour longer. Prices for this route start at about $34, but you can often find tickets for that price even when buying them on the same day as travel.

The bus is not only the most affordable way to travel from Amsterdam to Ghent, but it can be the fastest as well. The popular European coach company FlixBus operates several daily buses between these two cities for as little as $13, even when purchased for the same day (as long as you're flexible with your departure time). The total trip takes around three hours, so a little longer than the faster train option but less time than the cheaper option. However, it costs about a third of the price, even when buying train tickets at their best value. Plus, the bus is direct, so you can sleep or settle in without worrying about any annoying transfers.

The one downside of the bus, however, is that the Amsterdam stop isn't as conveniently located as the Amsterdam Central train station. In Amsterdam, buses depart in front of the Sloterdijk train station to the north of the main center. Thankfully, Amsterdam isn't a particularly expansive city and is equipped with great public transit, so getting to the bus is still relatively simple. In Ghent, buses arrive near the city's other train station, Gent-Dampoort, which is actually closer to the city center than the bigger Gent-Sint-Pieters, just 15 minutes on foot.

If you've rented a car, driving gives you the freedom to explore not only Amsterdam and Ghent, but also the many cities that are along the route or nearby, such as Rotterdam, The Hague, or Utrecht in the Netherlands and then Antwerp, Bruges, and Brussels in Belgium. The drive takes roughly three hours, although it can take more or less time depending on traffic, especially during weekday rush hour around major cities like Amsterdam and Antwerp.

Depending on which route you take, it's possible to complete the cross-border trip without paying any tolls, and you can plan your drive using ViaMichelin to avoid any surprise toll roads. If you aren't returning to Amsterdam at the end of your trip, don't forget that rental companies often charge hefty fees for picking up a vehicle in one country and leaving it in another.

Even though you are technically crossing an international line, both the Netherlands and Belgium are part of the Schengen Zone , which allows for borderless travel between countries. So when you cross from one country to the other, you don't have to worry about long lines, passport control, or border checks. The only indication you'll see that you've changed countries is a blue sign saying, " België ."

What to See in Ghent

During medieval times, Ghent was the second-largest city in Europe north of the Alps, second only to Paris. Many parts of its historic town center remain from those early days, such as the Gravensteen Castle, Saint Bavo Cathedral, and the Ghent Belfry —the tallest bell tower in Belgium. The city center is a car-free area, so it's easy for pedestrians to walk around and enjoy the scenery and architecture without worrying about oncoming traffic. The Graslei is one of the nicest places in the city for a stroll, a quay along the Leie River with a panoramic backdrop of gorgeously preserved medieval homes. If you're one of the two million people visiting in July, you're likely in town to enjoy Gentse Feesten , or the Ghent Festival, one of the largest cultural and music festivals in all of Europe.

Ghent is around 200 miles from Amsterdam.

You'll pass by Rotterdam, The Hague, or Utrecht in the Netherlands as well as Antwerp, Bruges, and Brussels in Belgium on the road from Amsterdam to Ghent.

If you take the high-speed train for part of the trip it will take two hours and 10 minutes to get to Ghent.
