1.Grand Palace

Arguably Bangkok’s most impressive attraction, the Grand Palace is a huge complex of Thai temples and historical buildings. Highlights include Wat Phra Kaew, known in English as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the Chakri Maha Prasat Hall.

Entry to the Grand Palace for non-Thais is 500 baht. There are several ways to access the Grand Palace. If you’re staying along the Riverside, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang (N9) pier, then walk through the riverside market to the Grand Palace.

Across the Chao Phraya from the Grand Palace is Wat Arun — the Temple of Dawn. One of Bangkok’s most picturesque and impressive temples, it’s a great temple to visit after you’ve seen Wat Pho. Take the three baht cross-river ferry from Tha Tien (N8) pier, near Wat Pho.

A popular way to see the Grand Palace, Wat Po, and Wat Arun is on the Walking Temple Tour, where your guide will ensure you take the fastest route between the temples and deal with all admission fees and transport.

3.Amulet Market

We just finished a half day tour with BKK to a floating market and market train in Bangkok and had a great time. Air was our guide and gave us some unique experiences that we could not have found on our own. She obviously loves what she does and it translates into an excellent tour. I would recommend this company for any private tour if you want something a little different.

If you're going to Bangkok, if you're trying to figure out your transportation on how to get to sites from your hotel, you're going to have a challenge in the best of times; however, particularly at this time with the unrest continuing and a 60 day state of emergency declared today, as I recall, you really don't have a chance navigating around protests areas in many parts of the city, including the high dollar hotel areas around Ratchprasong, unless you can navigate trains and river transportation like a native. And, that is precisely why you really are strongly advised to hire a private guide--a native!--to help you navigate this amazing city. We debated in December whether we should go to Bangkok in light of the upheaval, but, Air and Michiel, the owners of BKK Tours, hired for us a young Thai man, Michai Bnchai yo, who speaks English as if it were his mother tongue. And, our tour was set for using public transportation so Michai deftly guided us around the trouble spots after picking us up at our hotel in the Ratchprasong area, with his choosing the trains, metro, and river transportation that would avoid the protests. That would not have been possible if we'd been in a tour with a guide and car driver. Since we were traveling paths new to us, the diversions Michai took us on were actually a reward as we saw more things along the routes than we'd have otherwise had the chance. I will add that our hotel was in the Ratchprasong area where there was a major concentration of protestors. We bought a 1/2 day tour and a full day tour, starting at 1PM our first day when we did - Wat Pho (reclining Buddha) - Flower market - Canal tour Our full day tour started at 9:00am and we did: - Chinatown - Lunch - Grand Palace with Wat Phra Kaeo (emerald Buddha). During the full day tour, I had an accident and fell in a boat. In 15 minutes, thanks to Michai, I was delivered by a "tuk-tuk" to the emergency room at a hospital for 10 stitches; and, within an hour, was back out of the hospital and on our way again. Air and Michiel came to the hospital as well to see how I was doing. They are great people. My wife and I have "adopted" Michai (pronounced "meesha").

My husband and I visited Bangkok this past December. Air, our tour guide met us at the cruise ship and we were lucky enough to spend almost 3 days with her. Cities are a combination of the sights and the people you meet. We were blessed to have Air as our guide. Besides the fact that she is totally organized and really knows her subject - she is so genuinely easy to be with. Her English is impeccable - including American slang - Personally, it's all well and good to know your subject- but what is even better is when the tour guide loves her subject as well... the tour becomes really special for the clients. Some must do's ..........Do not miss the floating market and Air's special stop for soup. Do not miss the Railway Market. Do not miss the long boats. Do not miss the Prasart Museum. And thank you-- Air for helping me to purchase a Spirit House. It was hard saying goodbye - it was like spending 3 days with a friend.

We are seniors and had two full days to tour Bangkok. Thankfully we picked a great tour company and Oi was a delightful young lady. She was there in our hotel waiting for us both days. The first day we did the highlights of Bangkok. We used different modes of travel from tuck tuck, taxi, long boat and subway. It was necessary to think fast as the protests had some areas blocked off. At no time did we not feel safe. We are picky eaters but both days Oi took us to restaurants overlooking the water. The food was good and she helped us navigate the Thai menus. My husband doesn't eat vegetables and I can't do spicy or fish. Yes we are an odd lot. The high light was the long boat ride when we stopped at a temple and she gave us 2 bags of buns. This was to feed the cat fish. We could touch them. That day we were dropped off right at our hotel arriving by subway and walking a couple of blocks around the protesters. The next day we went to Anyar Wha by a wonderful van. It was a very posh van and the driver was very good getting us everywhere and picking us up. We enjoyed this more historic tour and again had a wonderful long boat ride. I would not hesitate to book with BKK Tours and MS Oi is a very knowledgeable guide. We were fortunate to have her as our guide. Thank you BKK Tours and Ms Oi for a wonderful if short trip to Bangkok.

This tour made my trip to Bangkok unforgettable. I was traveling alone and was worried about pretty much everything, but communication was a breeze and Miss Pary was right on time, super sweet and spoke perfect english. I was so lucky to have such an incredible guide through Bangkok. You take different modes of public transportation which was a really cool way to see the city - and you also take a long tail boat through the canals on the full day tour which was incredible. All of the temples are beautiful, and lunch was at a DELICIOUS spot - so far still one of the best meals that I've had in Thailand. I requested to see a monk for a blessing, and Pary went out of the way to take me somewhere where this could happen. I would not hesitate to suggest this tour to anyone - you get a tremendous value, and if you're lucky enough to get Pary, an incredible experience.

How to Find a Good Travel Agent in Bangkok, Thailand

Pacific Horizon Travel – Another good travel agent I’ve used for a domestic trip to Kanchanaburi is Pacific Horizon Travel, but they also handle some international travel. Pacific Horizon Travel has friendly staff that speaks goods English and are good at following through on potential travel plans.

They also organize a lot of day trips and excursions to places like the Grand Palace, the Floating Market and the Crocodile Farm, with prices that are competitive with other Bangkok travel agents.They even have extensive listings of most of the hotels in Bangkok, and you can book these through their website at Pacific Horizon Travel.

Ultima Travel – Ultima Travel is one of the best known travel agents in Bangkok. I have Thai friends who swear by them and do all of their domestic travel arrangements through Ultima Travel.

They usually have cheap prices on package tours to places like Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi and are very quick to respond to an enquiry. You can also book hotels through them in Thailand, if you don’t want the whole package deal.

Azure Travel – Azure Travel in Bangkok is well known for its tours and trips around south east Asia. One Thai friend traveled with them to Angkor Wat in Cambodia and had a fabulous time. She intends to book her next trip through them too. Azure Travel organizes trips to places in Thaland, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos.

They’re very well organized, efficient and more than happy to give you lots of options if you’re not exactly sure of the details of your trip. Their prices are highly competitive too (they’re currently offering a 3 day/2 nights all-inclusive package tour to Angkor Wat in Cambodia for only $261 from Bangkok – an excellent price.

Diethelm Travel – I booked my last plane tickets to Malaysia through Diethelm Travel and was exceptionally impressed. Diethelm Travel in Bangkok has been awarded ‘Best Travel Agent in Thailand’ two years in a row for offering some of the best travel services in Thailand and you can easily see why.

There are many travel agents in Bangkok, Thailand but try to choose one that is licensed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as they are usually more reliable. Many tourists (especially backpackers) use the travel agents in and around Khao San Road, as they’re cheap but, after hearing several horror stories of trips gone array from friends, I would say avoid them and choose a larger and more reliable travel agency.

Bangkok, 02 April, 2021 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is delighted to announce that the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has certified the Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) certification programme to be on par with the WTTC SafeTravels global health and hygiene standardised protocols.

WTTC’s approval of the Amazing Thailand SHA certification in alignment with the WTTC SafeTravels protocols is testament to Thailand’s effective health and hygiene standards that have over the year placed the kingdom among the best in the world for the ongoing COVID-19 recovery effort.

Also, WTTC’s approval means that Thai stakeholders who have been awarded the Amazing Thailand SHA certificate will be endorsed to display both the WTTC SafeTravels and Amazing Thailand SHA logos in their respective places of business.

The Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) project is a result of cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Ministry of Public Health, the Department of Disease Control, the Department of Health and the Department of Health Service Support, as well as government and private sector organizations involved in the tourism industry. Together they aim to make tourism a part of Thailand’s disease prevention measures and ensure that both Thai and foreign tourists have a positive experience, that they are happy and confident in the sanitation and safety standards of Thailand’s tourism products and services.

Various boards, federations, and associations in the tourism industry are in charge of inspecting the checklist and certifying the result of improving a workplace according to the SHA standards. Workplaces are divided into 10 types: 1. restaurants / diners, 2. hotel, accommodation and meeting place, 3. recreational activity and tourist attraction, 4. transportation, 5. travel agency, 6. health and beauty, 7. department store and shopping centers, 8. sports for tourism, 9. theater, entertainment, and activity, 10. souvenir shop and other shops.

TAT awards SHA certificates, assigns a serial number to successful entrepreneurs, and records it in the database of the list of entrepreneurs who have received the SHA certificate. The TAT can also revoke the SHA certificate if entrepreneurs fail to comply with SHA standards.

SHA provides sanitation and safety standards for tourists. During the re-opening period of establishments or services, tourists and service recipients are asked to provide any suggestions (Post Audit) via the online system provided by TAT, which will be used for further improvement. Establishments will be randomly inspected by the committee.

Pleasant. Don’t expect any sailing, it’s motorboat catered for tourists who want to relax, suntan and read a book and eat lots of good food. The wind wasn’t always there to be true but even when it was we had a scheduled tour so not many tourists were up for it so captain has to follow itinerary. It’s a bit sad as the boat crew are all very seasoned sailors who just make a nice little cruise for the middle aged. It’s 2 and 1/2 days not 4 as advertised. Main company is Intrepid and they have so many safety rules, makes you feel like a child in a holiday camp. I had a good time but definitely I’d like to try a proper sailing boat next time.

With great sadness I have to write this review in order to protect other naive and tolerant tourists. The organization and handling of the tour was disturbing, abusive and inappropriate. We have just completed 3 indochina tours with 3 different operators. Interpid failed in every category and ruined our holiday. Everything from safety, transportation, meals, hotels, guides and content was a failure. Greed and luck of common sense prevailed. Safety: disregard for our health and wellbeing: obscure public transportation in covid, bird flue times using buses without Hepa filters, dirty and stinking of old urine. Senior citizens forced to drag laguage via high sidewalks, pt holes,busy streets in the middle of the night and spending almost 3 days traveling on buses!! Nothing to see along highways. Your office misleading and lying about the length of travels. Your (5hrs) is in fact (8hrs, 20 min without any obstacles on the road) Booking bus for ungodly hours and making us sit and wait for the room after very long ,tiring trip on dirty, stinking bus and denying us breakfast, not making arrangements to get us breakfast boxes! Guide lying to operator about us having breakfast!. Arjan did not make any arrangements. Nobody new anything when group showed up. We were told that she was just following Interpid arrangements. How horryfing that you would allow yourself to treat us with such disrespectful abusive way. Hotels: cheap, usually china town, dirty and uncomfortable beds, and pillows. Bayview hotel rooms were horrific with 10 cm of dirt around walls, smelling of vomit and old stinge. The only decent hotel was in Singapore. Meals: virtually nonexistent. The horrible meal Interpid bought at filthy food market in Kuala Lumpur was shameful! Cost you may be 20 dol for 12 people?? Majority was afraid to eat and went hungry, others had gastrointestinal problems after eating in this dirty place. You saved money at the expense of our health! Your guides can not speak proper english to provide information. It was useless to have them, we learned nothing from them so we did not know what we were looking at.You failed to provide this basic tour service as well. Arjan was extremely poor guide. Not helpful, not informed, disorganized. Very stressed.Several times provided us with false information causing stress and discomfort. Not aware what we are to expect at next destinations?! Means you not doing your job that I contracted you to do! As a group we were insulted by your arrogance to think that you will use our hands to clean filthy village in Thailand. Its not about green movement and cleaning beach. Thats not a problem. This village is littered with years of garbage. Thats their way of living, they can sit and drink coffee by piles of garbage, it does not bother them but you think that I paid so much money to go and clean for them? In the high heat and humidity 80 plus seniors cleaning fishing village?? only infantile adult could come up with such insult. You ruined our day and caused great physical and emotional discomfort. We paid for all attractions, and meals out of pocket, all you did was a guide sending text with 10 things to see in a current place. I could do without this text. We got more info from the internet on our own. Bad hotels, no meals, primitive transport, horrible guides: what did We pay you for? You ruined our experience, you insulted us and you endangered our health and wellbeing. The group discussed these issues at the end of tour and we all share these concerns. I know couple of my friends have already written to you but you have dishonorably disregarded the problems. We, my husband and I, demand refund of at least 50% of 7190.00 paid as you failed to provide even basic services. I booked the 15 day Thailand group tour and had one of the best experiences of my life! I specifically chose this tour as it covered a lot of the key places including Chiang Mai and Pai in the North which actually turned out to be my two favourite places! I decided to book with Feel Free after having a half hour call with one of the founders Adam where all my questions about the tour was answered thoroughly and honestly! I personally don’t drink and go out but this tour is great if you do like to drink and party or don’t! I loved that everything was optional and no one was pressured to do anything they didn’t want to do! I’d join most of the group dinners and on the couple nights there were nights out I did my own thing! The tour is jam packed with lots of different activities day to day, can be a lot but definitely worth it! The itinerary is so carefully thought out and I experienced a number of activities I never thought I’d try! My group leader Jamie was also great! She was very attentive to everyone and their needs and how they were feeling. I really appreciated the little things like her being on call if I had any questions when I was out doing my own thing, waking up pretty early to make sure I got picked up to be taken to the extra Muay Thai class I decided to go to, carrying my suitcase at times when she didn’t need to, taking pictures and videos whilst we were enjoying the moment etc. I also liked the balance of having free time to do our own thing, especially when it can be overwhelming at times for some people to constantly be around a group of people. I also met some incredibly amazing and inspiring people on this tour who I’m so grateful to have met! Everyone was super lovely, sweet and caring and will never forget the amazing experiences and memories I made with everyone! The group was mixed with both introverted and extroverted people but everyone got on so well and made a conscious effort to get to know everyone! Overall one of the best experiences ever, thank you Feel Free for the best 15 days of my life!

This tour was a great way to get some of the highlights of Thailand! The tour guides in Bangkok and Chiang Mai were excellent. We were disappointed that one of the excursions on the original itinerary was not on the final one, nor was it replaced with another, but we did manage to fill up all of the days with activities. We did the 23 day Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand tour. Here are our thoughts and some hopefully helpful information for those considering this trip in the future. We loved Vietnam. Our guide Duc was excellent and the pace was varied with some long days interspersed with shorter days. In this leg, we got to spend time in the cities and villages exploring and did a multitude of different activities. Very good mix of things. Loved Ha Long Bay. Cambodia was fine. It was only 5 days and our guide was ok. Some neat adventures like the bamboo train and bat cave, plus Angkor Wat as the highlight. Thailand was terrible. We spent 4 days out of 6 on the bus for over 6 hours each day just visiting temples. Too many temples and too long on the bus. We would arrive at hotels after 7 pm, told to find dinner but have your bags out by 630 am the next morning. No time to explore the towns or enjoy the hotel amenities. The itinerary was a joke for these times talking about enjoying time at the pool or local markets when we arrived so late. Little to no culture in the Thailand tour. We felt cheated on learning about Thailand, and it was exhausting. We would recommend travel talk do up some FAQs for travellers speaking about visas, (some wasted money on a Cambodian e visa and photo, neither of which was needed) currencies, water consumption, luggage limits well before the trip (were told limits 3 days before when we had already left home). Tell people inclusion fees must be paid in cash so people can plan for this. No credit card option is available. So be prepared to visit the atm regularly. The overall itinerary needs to be updated as prices are not current and some places have been closed since Covid and substitutions were made. Some optional activities were not available. Our actual tour ended 2 days before it should have with the Thailand guide leaving us Friday afternoon and we were on own own the rest of that day, Saturday and Sunday morning. Look for hotels closer to things to do in the cities. Some were more than 30 minutes away from anything and nothing around for restaurants. Overall, we could recommend Vietnam and perhaps Cambodia, but not Thailand.

Should have been called a “Temple Tour” as we visited more temples than anything else. Mostly the hotels were good with the exception of The Wink hotel, which was changed pretty much last minute from the Paragon Saigon Hotel, which was 3 star at best. It was a shame that we didn’t get to spend more time in these hotels - boarding the bus at 7 a.m and reaching the next hotel at 6:45 p.m, still needing to get dinner just for a repeat experience the next day was really not enjoyable. Moreover, during these 12 hour tours, our stops were for temples and one unspectacular lake; very disappointing. The speed boat ride to Cambodia was also disappointing, we were jammed in tight and seating was so low we couldn’t see anything. Then on arrival at Cambodia, we were faced with a very steep ramp to pull our luggage up and NO ONE to help- no porters for us but other tours also disembarking there had porters???

My husband and I booked our honeymoon in Thailand with Zicasso's travel agency. We worked with our travel agent to plan it and the itinerary was incredible! I barely had to do anything. He booked all of our activities, hotels, and transfers. Transportation: We went to four locations (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and Krabi) and each time we traveled internally, a guide would drop us off and pick us up. Truly door-to-door service! We also had a private guide and driver for each of our planned activities. Our domestic travel was so incredibly easy and we were super lucky to have all of them be on time and seamless! Our tour operator monitored all the flights and before our honeymoon, made sure to update a couple whose times had changed to ensure we got to our destinations with enough time. Activities: We wanted our honeymoon to be equal parts adventure and relaxation. We spent the first half of our trip in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We toured temples, did a street food tour, took a day trip to a floating market, spent a day learning to cook with a local family, spent a day with rescue elephants, and visited a gorgeous national park, to name a few things. All were private tours with private guides! A shout-out to our amazing guides in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We then spent intentionally unstructured time at the beaches of Koh Samui and Krabi (I’d recommend Krabi over Koh Samui (I was the one who added Koh Samui to the itinerary, but should have listened to our travel agent!). Krabi was so perfect for a honeymoon. Accommodations: All were five stars and beautiful! We had cute honeymoon welcome gifts everywhere we went. In summary, it was so worth working with our travel team to plan a stress-free honeymoon. We had an incredible time and couldn’t have loved it more!

Although frequent travelers, this was our first trip to Asia. We greatly wanted to visit Thailand, but were uncertain how to proceed in planning our trip. He put together an initial travel itinerary, which we subsequently modified in follow-up conversations. Our agent was great to work with and we felt very involved in the process of setting up our trip. We have now returned from the trip and it was wonderful, or as my wife keeps telling people, magical. The attention to detail was impressive. The accommodations were first-rate. Travel occurred as planned, with air and land travel within Thailand going without a hitch. My wife has food allergies and was very concerned about how she would manage in Thailand. We had a very interesting 18-day trip to Laos and Vietnam in February. We worked closely with our Zicasso tour operator to plan a customized trip that included a number of stops and different experiences. We started in Laos, with the monasteries, waterfall/hiking, cooking classes in Luang Prabang, and outdoor activities in beautiful Vang Vieng (hiking, caving, and kayaking). We spent the next 13 days in Vietnam – chaotic Hanoi; beautiful Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, with the fantastic limestone karsts; historic Hue, the Imperial City; picturesque Hoi An, with the serene and spectacular resort; ending up in Saigon for a day. We had three knowledgeable guides with different personalities and backgrounds – Laos, northern Vietnam, and central Vietnam. We had interesting and detailed discussions which enhanced our understanding of the history of the region, as well as the US impact on Laos and Vietnam. Although we liked our guides, we realized they were independent contractors and did not really have any input in our day-to-day itinerary (which did have changes from the original). Although most of the changes were fine, we would have liked better communication – letting us know about the changes and options. As a result, we spent more time managing each day's itinerary with our guides to ensure we liked the next day's itinerary. In summary, we truly liked and enjoyed our well-planned trip.

9 things you should know before visiting Bangkok

I moved to Bangkok in 1999, a time when most visitors to Thailand reluctantly did a night in this megacity before beelining to an island or the north. Synonymous with traffic jams, pollution and urban sprawl, the Thai capital was largely seen as an unwanted but obligatory stopover.

Decades later, things have changed and Bangkok is now the destination of choice for many visitors – with good reason. Easier to get around and cleaner than ever, with a vibrant eating and drinking scene that caters to just about every budget and an enviable spread of intriguing sights and fantastic-value shopping, the city has more to offer than ever before.

Yet like any big city, Bangkok has its quirks and surprises. Here's what you need to know before you go.

Bangkok is easier to get around than ever

Bangkok used to be synonymous with traffic jams and air pollution. The jams still happen, but the good news is that the city’s public transportation system has grown immensely. The various above and underground rail networks currently unite 10 different lines – with more in the works – and 192 stations, including trains linking both of Bangkok’s international airports and the city center.

On top of this, taxis remain ubiquitous and cheap – though subject to the issues that make the city’s traffic so infamous – while quirky public transportation systems such as the city’s river and canal taxis provide a slow but steady (and scenic) way to get around.

Crime happens but it's rare

Thailand has a low crime rate and is generally considered a safe country. Bangkok suffers from the same type of violent crimes as any big city, but anecdotally, is considered a safe place. Apart from occasional bag snatching and theft, the most dangerous thing in the city is its traffic (Thailand’s roads are some of the deadliest of any country). Solo women travelers and locals I’ve spoken to also report feeling safe in the city.

A particular Bangkok annoyance is scams directed at tourists. These typically involve taxi drivers who refuse to use their meters, or tuk-tuk drivers and/or well-dressed, English-speaking men who appear out of nowhere offering free tours that inevitably lead to dodgy gem shops or tailors. The good news is that most of these situations are easy to spot and relatively low-pressure; if something seems off, simply walk away.

It’s also worth noting that Bangkok’s police don’t have a great reputation. Steer clear of them unless you really need help.

Street food isn’t the only good food

Western chefs and food media have been raving about Bangkok’s street food for more than a decade. And it’s a fun, often delicious way to eat. But if you relegated yourself to street food alone, you’d miss the entire scope of Bangkok’s cuisine.

Supplement those streetside noodles with meals at the charming, decades-old restaurants in the old town – these are the places that get the most praise in the Thai-language media. In Bangkok’s newer districts, such as along Thanon Sukhumvit, consider a Japanese meal – the city is home to one of the largest populations of Japanese people outside of Japan.

If your budget allows, consider a splurge restaurant. While the rest of the world was obsessing over its street food, Bangkok's dining scene went in the opposite direction and today is home to several modern, cutting-edge upscale restaurants.

Sometimes it's too hot to handle

Bangkok is one of the hottest capital cities in the world, with an average mean temperature of 29°C (84°F). This heat is compounded by intense humidity and the urban environment, which reflects and retains heat, meaning the city often feels much, much ( much ) hotter. April is Bangkok's hottest month, with an average daily max temperature of 35°C (96 ° F) and during the “winter” in December and January, temperatures rarely dip below 20°C (68°F).

All of this means you shouldn't try to cover too much ground on foot – an already difficult task given the city’s lack of pedestrian infrastructure. If you do walk, learn the technique of regularly ducking into air-conditioned malls, hotel lobbies and 7-Elevens to cool off.

Likewise, pack light clothing, but remember – Thais are conservative when it concerns showing skin in public and Bangkok is not the beach.

Bangkok is a queer-friendly city

LGBTIQ+ people are made to feel welcome in Bangkok, which is generally considered Asia’s most queer-friendly city. The epicenter of the gay scene is Thanon Silom, especially in and around Soi 4, which is ostensibly Asia’s biggest queer nightlife area.

Thankfully, it looks like this queer-friendly vibe will extend to legislation. In 2023, the Thai parliament passed draft bills on same-sex marriage, which are expected to become laws, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to allow same-sex marriage.

Keep in mind that public displays of affection between people of any gender are frowned upon in Thailand.

There are better budget options than Khao San Road

If you want to be based in the world’s most famous backpacker strip – and all that that entails – book a bed or room on Thanon Khao San, generally known as Khao San Road. It’s lively and fun, and provides easy access to the city’s old town.

But having moved slightly upscale in recent decades, Khao San Road no longer represents the best value area to stay in Bangkok. And with loud bars and a boozy vibe, it’s definitely not the most peaceful place to stay.

If you want to have access to the backpacker amenities but don’t want the noise and hassle, consider staying in the streets nearby, such as Thanon Rambutri or Thanon Phra Athit.

Monsoon season brings sudden surprises

During the annual monsoon, from approximately May to October, Bangkok’s streets occasionally turn into rivers. During this time of year, don’t be surprised if you have to camp out on an elevated street corner or in a 7-Eleven until the waters recede.

Malls are part of city life

While shopping malls are a dying breed in much of the west, they’re thriving in Bangkok. The city is home to some of the most over-the-top shopping centers in the world, which in contemporary Bangkok, have a dual function as (conveniently air-conditioned) social centers. Thais gather at the city’s more than 500 shopping centers to chat, eat, take selfies and occasionally make purchases, and so should you.

Bangkok essentially shuts down during the Thai New Year

Every year around April, Bangkok grinds to a halt during Thai New Year, known as Songkran or the water festival. The tradition has its origins in the cleansing role of water, but these days it essentially means that Bangkok becomes ground zero to a multi-day, raucous water battle.

Whether you're into it or not, you’ll be splashed with water and/or smeared with baby powder. Don’t even attempt stepping outside your door with your Sunday best on and don’t expect your favorite restaurant, or that museum or monument to be open (shopping centers, inevitably, will be operating). Weed isn’t exactly legal in Bangkok

In June 2022, marijuana and hemp were removed from the Category 5 narcotics list in Thailand. However, there are still many restrictions and smoking marijuana in public is not legal and is not recommended.

Yes, there's a sex industry, but it's easy to avoid

“One Night in Bangkok” is indeed a reality. But if you steer clear of the main red-light zones at night – namely Thanon Patpong, Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy – it's likely you won’t even witness this side of the city.
