Transit Art: A Series on Art that Moves Us

“Life Underground” by Tom Otterness located in the New York City 14th street subway station, photo by dancingdentist

We don't know who came up with the idea that installing beautiful, intriguing, and thought-provoking art as part of transit systems would inject some joy into the otherwise perfunctory activities associated with commuting, but their instincts were correct. Whether it be subway cars, the train line, or your local bus station, these modes of travel are no longer just about efficiency or a way to connect from one destination to the next, but many also offer a unique and inviting visual experience.

As part of our series on public art which includes street art , we're excited to explore this unique way in which art is displayed in public spaces, in the form of transit art. Public art projects have become very commonplace across the transportation landscape for many urban cities including New York, Washington DC, and Philadelphia, just to name a few. This includes works of art that you might see at a train station, subway station, metro stop, or perhaps even on the side of a bus.

Transit art comes in all styles, mediums, shapes, and sizes, from grand scale paintings to bronze sculptures. Not only does transit art hold great appeal for the locals, it also enhances the experience of visitors who either seek it out or may happily discover it along the way.

“Last Journey” by UGallery artist Fatemeh Kian

Transit Art: A Brief Overview

Modern mass transportation is recognized as an efficient and environmentally friendly way to move large numbers of people from place to place, and many cities have developed sophisticated systems by which to do so. A strong transportation system is a critical tool for a community’s economic vitality as well as the health and wellbeing of its residents.

It’s difficult to trace the history of the first examples of art in transit, but creative works have been popping up in communities throughout the country for at least the last century or more. Incorporating art as part of public works projects was initially conceived as a logical and practical way to make the infrastructure more appealing. While it wasn’t always the case, artists are now often included as part of planning teams for transit projects, working alongside architects and engineers. The federal government encourages localities to enhance the mass transportation experience through art, and federal grants frequently support art installations as part of overall transportation project budgets.

Transit Art Creates a Sense of Place

Many cities incorporate transit art as a way to identify and highlight those things which are special about their community. The art may reflect cultural elements, significant historic figures and events, and other unique characteristics that instill a sense of community pride. There are myriad ways in which cities accomplish this, including Albuquerque, New Mexico, home of the International Balloon Fiesta, which wraps its city buses with artfully crafted balloon designs. On the other side of the country, one Harlem subway station features mural panels that honor local African American “heroes and heroines” from throughout the community’s history.

Transit Art Provides Opportunities for Local Artists

Many “art in public places” programs that fund public art projects, do so with a strong intention for utilizing and employing the skills of local artists. These partnerships are a win-win for the community, which is improving its aesthetic while simultaneously providing paid opportunities to artists to apply their creative skills.

For example, a native Napa graffiti artist known as ELLE recently returned to her hometown to apply her creative skills as part of a local transit project. Her artwork depicts two women within a background of colorful Mexican textiles as spray-painted on the exterior of a Napa Valley train car. ELLE has gained recent recognition as an esteemed female graffiti artist and was invited by the local Rail Art District to share her talents, with a nod to her Napa/Sonoma roots.

Transit Art Creates Inviting Spaces

This one is a no-brainer. Art enhances our experience of the world. Whether it’s the daily commuter who rides the same subway line five days a week on their way to work or the international tourist who seeks out one-of-a-kind art in out-of-the-ordinary places .

Where to Find It

Art underground: subway stations.

Well over a dozen US cities have subway systems that boast strong ridership numbers. For instance, although the numbers fluctuate, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, on average over one billion people utilize the New York City subway system annually. To make the commute more interesting, subway station art has become a widespread and welcome phenomenon.

Train Stations

Ornately fashioned train stations make us think of the gilded age of train travel when affluent first-class travelers decked out in elegant attire booked luxury train cars to journey across the country. Consistent with this perception, many iconic train stations are known for their spectacular architecture, often complemented by the presence of majestic statues and brilliant natural light streaming through grand hallways.

Though many modern train stations may reflect a different aesthetic, there is still a trend toward the development of interesting architecture and creative spaces, which is one of many reasons train stations are high on our list of places to see great public art.

Bus Stations and Bus Stops

When you think of places to witness great art, bus stations might not be the first venues that come to mind. However, we’ve learned that numerous bus stops and stations throughout the country feature art installations that range from awe-inspiring to mind-blowing.

Ventura, California for example, has a transfer station at the Pacific Mall that features an art installation that is remarkable in scale and imagination. The 36-foot sculpture is a steel impression of a bus that curves and winds in a vertical trajectory and eventually morphs into the shape of a house. Of the project, artist Dennis Oppenheim described his design to the Los Angeles Times as one which “aggrandizes the simple act of waiting for a bus to nearly the level of hallucination.”

Transit Vehicles

While not as common, some cities have transformed their buses into mobile works of art. This is often in the form of bus wraps, or within and upon the interior walls of a subway train.

We’re particularly loving this bus art in Miami by artist Nathan Delinois, which in addition to its inspired design, was Miami’s way of honoring the Haitian community during Haitian Heritage Month in 2017. With a nod to prominent cultural influences, the bus represents another example of transit art that creates a sense of place and hometown pride.

Whether its subways in Manhattan, buses in Brooklyn, or trains in the city of Dallas, transit art is a fascinating example of art in public places. We look forward to sharing more in future articles about some of the best places to see transit art. In the meantime, you can peruse original art with new works posted weekly on our website.

A Deviated Fixed Route Transit System in Atascosa County

Connecting Communities In partnership with Atascosa County and the cities of Jourdanton, Poteet, and Pleasanton, Alamo Regional Transit started a new transit system in Atascosa County on July 1, 2020. This route has since evolved and changes were made from comments of residents in the communities. Atascosa Cowboy Connect will bring together the three commuities, servicing all residents at the affordable rates and reliable transportation ART is known for. Atascosa Cowboy Connect is a time point transit system that will follow a set route connecting the cities, but can also deviate up to a .5 mile to include those that may not be able to get to the route, for an additional cost. These two loops, each one hour long, will connect residents of Jourdanton and Poteet to Pleasanton from residences to places of employment, County offices, retail centers and much more. Bus Schedule The route from Jourdanton to Pleasanton departs the Jourdanton Housing Authority every hour, going to destinations locally like Jourdanton High School, the County Courthouse, Jourdanton City Hall, and the Methodist South Hospital, continuing to destinations in Pleasanton like Wal-Mart, H-E-B, Pleasanton Housing, and various medical offices along the route. The route from Poteet to Pleasanton departs the Poteet Housing Authority every hour, going to destinations locally like the Lowe's and Poteet Town Hall, continuing to destinations in Pleasanton like the Coastal Bend College, UPS store, H-E-B, Pleasanton Library, River Park, and various other stops along the way. Transfers can be made at H-E-B from one route to another, for the same fee.

Your Guide to Taking the ART Shuttle Bus to Disneyland

by Heather Adams | Jul 21, 2023 | Disney California Adventure Park , Disneyland , Disneyland Parks

travel bus art

Discover the perks of taking the ART shuttle bus to and from Disneyland Resort with all the info you need in one place.

You’ve booked your hotel, you’ve secured your theme park tickets – but how will you get from where you’re staying to Disneyland? If you’re looking for an affordable and convenient way to get to and from the parks or Downtown Disney, the ART shuttle bus is the perfect solution.

With operating hours that suit Disneyland Resort visitors perfectly, reasonable pricing, and routes that’ll take you directly from local hotels to the theme parks, it’s hard to beat the ART shuttle. Below, we’re sharing everything you need to know about taking the ART bus to and from Disneyland during your next visit.

What is the ART Shuttle Bus?

The ART shuttle bus is a shuttle service run by Anaheim Regional Transportation (ART). Its shuttles run throughout the city of Anaheim, but one of the biggest perks of this particular transportation service is its buses stop at local hotels and Disneyland Resort.

In fact, ART shuttle buses travel to most of the locations you might visit while you’re at Disneyland. The buses travel from hotels across the 1,100-acre Anaheim Resort District, meaning you can easily get transportation from pretty much any hotel near Disneyland Resort. Buses even stop at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The ART shuttle is super convenient, thanks to the locations it visits and its service hours. Shuttles typically start running one hour before Disneyland’s theme parks open and continue until 30 minutes after the theme parks close (that’s usually midnight or later). And they run seven days a week!

How to Ride the ART Shuttle Bus

Ready to take one of ART’s shuttles to the theme parks? Before you head to your closest shuttle stop, you’ll want to download the official ART app.

The ART app – which is called A-Way WeGo – makes it easy to not only navigate throughout Anaheim using ART, but it’s also a breeze to purchase shuttle passes, board your bus for different routes, and figure out where shuttle stops are located. It’s essential if you’re planning to ride on ART (and it also works for FRAN, a complimentary on-demand mini shuttle service for downtown Anaheim).

With A-Way WeGo downloaded on your device, you’ll:

  • Buy ART shuttle bus passes
  • Be able to scan your pass to board the bus
  • Check bus routes, route maps, and arrival times

It’s pretty easy to figure out where each ART shuttle bus is headed, whether you’re traveling to Disneyland Resort or to your hotel. Each ART bus displays the name of the hotel line – so you’ll know exactly where a given bus is headed before you climb aboard. Just look at the front windshield to see where you’re about to travel to.

Additionally, when you’re on board an ART bus, you don’t have to signal for your designed stops. All ART shuttles automatically stop at each of the designated stops on the route. When you reach your destination, you’ll be able to hop off once the bus rolls to the stop you’re looking for.

ART Drop Off and Pick Up Locations at Disneyland Resort

Once you’ve picked up an ART shuttle bus at your Anaheim hotel, you’ll travel to the Disneyland Main Transportation Center. This area sits right off Harbor Boulevard, and it’s in the same area where Guests can take shuttles to and from the Toy Story Parking Lot.

Once you’re dropped off at the Disneyland Main Transportation Center, you’ll be able to walk right up to security so you can enter the Resort at the Esplanade, right between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.

Ready to head back to your hotel? You’ll walk back to the Disneyland Main Transportation Center. In order to find the right route – and right bus – for your desired destination or hotel, you will need to know your bus route’s number . That number will tell you where to line up, and which bus stop is the correct one to wait at.

To find your bus route’s number, open the ART website or A-Way WeGo app on your phone and take a look at the routes. Each route is colored and numbered so you can find your hotel. Still unsure if you’re climbing onto the right bus? You can always ask the bus driver!

Buying an ART Shuttle Pass

It’s easy to pay for your ART bus rides in advance, as you can easily purchase prepaid ART passes in the A-Way WeGo app using a credit card. You can buy your passes in advance of your visit, or on the day you’re planning to ride.

ART offers the following options and prices:

  • One-way fares at $4 per adult
  • 1-day passes at $6 per adult
  • 3-day passes at $16 per adult
  • 5-day passes at $25 per adult

Once you’ve paid for your ART shuttle pass, you’ll be able to take advantage of the hop-on, hop-off service as needed. When you scan your pass to climb aboard one of ART’s shuttles, your pass will automatically be activated, and the “countdown” to expiration begins.

Just remember that multi-day passes are valid for consecutive days. If you purchase a 3-day pass, for example, it’ll expire on the fourth day after activation.

Frequently Asked Questions About the ART Shuttle Bus

How much does the art shuttle bus cost.

One-way fares start at $4 for adults and $1.50 for children. However, you may be able to save more money by purchasing a multi-day pass, especially if you plan to travel on an ART bus multiple times per day between your hotel and Disneyland Resort.

What Time Does the ART Start Running to Disneyland?

The ART shuttle buses start running one hour before Disneyland and California Adventure open for the day. That’s typically around 7:00 AM.

How Often Does the ART Shuttle Run?

ART sticks to a 20 minute schedule frequency, which means buses should arrive at their stops every 20 minutes. During peak times, additional buses are added to the schedule, which may shorten your wait a bit.

How Late Does the ART Shuttle Bus Run?

The ART shuttle buses will continue running until 30 minutes after the theme parks close – so you can typically ride until midnight or later, depending on park operating hours during your visit.

Can You Bring Strollers on the ART Bus?

Yes, you can bring strollers on ART shuttles. You can also ride with wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Try these alternative routes if you want to avoid traffic to the Jersey Shore

Fourth of July seems like a great time to visit the Jersey Shore − except for the traffic!

The Garden State Parkway is the obvious thought for the trip from North Jersey to the Shore, but with it comes heavy traffic. Traffic may be even worse thanks to an issue with the pavement in Toms River.

With beaches along the Jersey Shore expected to draw large crowds, travelers can turn to a variety of transportation methods to ensure a smooth journey.

NJ Transit to Jersey Shore

NJ Transit trains provide direct routes to popular shore destinations such as Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Point Pleasant Beach. The North Jersey Coast Line train can take you to Jersey Shore from New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station, Secaucus and Rahway Station. The trains offer a reliable and stress-free way to avoid the inevitable congestion on major roadways.

Check online for NJ Transit's schedule from your origin station to your desired Shore spot.

Bus routes to Jersey Shore

Buses are another viable option. NJ Transit offer routes to various shore towns, making it easier for residents to leave their cars at home and enjoy a hassle-free trip.

Check online for the bus schedule. The bus can be tricky, though. A bus route from Ridgewood to Wildwood, for example, takes over six hours and costs $60 one way, per NJ Transit's site.

Rideshare or carpool

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are seeing an uptick in bookings for beach destinations. Additionally, carpooling with friends or family is becoming a popular choice, allowing travelers to share the drive and reduce parking challenges at the shore.

Of course, you'll still have to go through highway traffic this way.

Rental Cars or Zipcar

For those seeking flexibility, renting a car or using a car-sharing service like Zipcar offers a convenient solution. This option provides the freedom to set one's own schedule and explore less crowded beach spots.

Best time to leave for the Jersey Shore

Travel experts advise departing early and planning ahead to avoid peak travel times and ensure a more enjoyable holiday experience.

Leave by 11 a.m. Wednesday if you're going for the long holiday weekend or after 7 p.m. Avoid 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday as your return time.

As the Fourth of July holiday promises sun, sand, and celebrations, residents can embrace these alternative routes to make the most of their beach trips while minimizing the stress of travel.

Oneida County Sheriff's Office issued 852 citations for passing stopped school buses

With the recent completion of the 2023-2024 school year, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office has issued a total of 852 citations for passing stopped school buses thanks to the Verra Mobility’s CrossingGuard school bus stop-arm enforcement program, officials said in a statement.

This program provides state-of-the-art stop-arm safety technology to capture stop-arm events effectively.

When the stop arm is deployed, the camera automatically detects vehicles that pass the stopped bus within the enforcement zone.

When an event occurs, the cameras record video of the vehicle and capture event images, including the vehicle, its license plate, and the extended stop-arm.

The violation video and license plate images are then reviewed by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office for approval prior to a citation being issued.

Citations issued

The school districts that are partnering with the Sheriff’s Office and the number of violations within those districts include:

  • Holland Patent — 54 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus
  • New Hartford — 178 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus
  • New York Mills — 97 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus
  • Rome City — 77 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus
  • Sauquoit Valley — 34 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus
  • Waterville — 33 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus
  • Westmoreland — 97 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus
  • Whitesboro — 282 citations issued for passing a stopped school bus

“The number of school buses being passed in Oneida County is concerning as it puts the safety of the children at risk,” the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The Sheriff’s Office urges motorists to pay close attention when approaching school buses — “Stop on Red, Kids Ahead.”

Up to 32,000 students in Oneida County can be transported to and from school in county school buses daily.

As part of the county’s partnership with Verra Mobility, 191 school buses in the eight participating districts are equipped with school bus stop-arm safety cameras. The sheriff’s office is currently working with Verra Mobility to get the remaining school districts in the county online with cameras on their buses.

In 2019, the New York Legislature passed legislation to permit schools to equip their buses with camera technology to catch drivers who illegally drive by school buses when they stop to pick up or drop off students.

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, under the law, the fine for passing a school bus ranges from $250 for a first violation, to a maximum of $1,000 for three violations in three years. Additionally, if a vehicle owner is convicted of three violations in three years, their driver’s license can be revoked for a minimum of six months.

Everything to know about the 2024 Saturday in the Park

S IOUX CITY, Iowa ( KCAU ) — The annual Saturday in the Park festival is days away, which means you’ve probably figured out which stage will have the artist you’re most excited to see. But have you thought about parking, food, and souvenirs? Don’t worry; KCAU 9 has you covered. Here’s everything you need to know for the 2024 SITP.

Parking

Every year, cars line the streets of the neighborhood surrounding Grandview Park and many find themselves walking several blocks to reach their destination. To help mitigate the need for parking space and ensure everyone can enjoy the celebrations, Sioux City Transit is providing a bus service dedicated to Saturday in the Park from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Pick up and drop off will be located in front of the Tyson Events Center main entrance on Gordon Drive and the south entrance of Grandview Park on 24th Street.

Bus Fares:

  • Adult – $1.80 one-way trip or $3.60 round trip
  • Student – $1.55 one-way trip or $3.10 round trip.
  • Senior Citizen & Disabled – $0.90 one-way trip or $1.80 round trip.
  • Children Under Five – Free with an adult
  • Day Pass Adult – $5.00
  • Day Pass Senior Citizen – $2.00
  • Day Pass Disability – $2.00
  • Day Pass Student – $4.00

While drivers will accept cash, it’s recommended that eventgoers purchase a return ride token in advance since drivers will be unable to make change. Fare tokens will be sold throughout the day at the Tyson Events Center stop.

Patrons are encouraged to park at the Tyson Events Center/Long Lines Family Recreation Center or the River’s Landing Parking Ramp and ride the special event bus due to the limited parking around Grandview and the likelihood of traffic congestion and roadblocks.

Navigation

Looking for a restroom, beer tickets, or first aid? Check out the map below to find anything you’re looking for with ease.

Permitted Items

While you’re packing up and getting ready to head out to the festival, keep in mind that only clear bags will be allowed in the park. Coolers, food, and beverages will also not be allowed, however, there will be numerous vendors for you to choose from throughout the area. Patrons are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle and can find water bottle refilling stations throughout the park.

Other permitted items include a blanket, lawn chairs, and an umbrella, but umbrellas should not prevent others around you from seeing the stage.

Items that are not permitted include guns, weapons, and fireworks. While they might love some of the performers, pets should be left at home. Additionally, distribution, solicitation, and advertisements in the form of flyers, business cards, etc., will not be allowed.

Now that you’re all packed and ready to go, let’s see what else SITP has to offer.

Kid’s Zone

At Saturday in the Park, there’s something to enjoy for all ages. Parents can rest easy knowing that their kids will be entertained for hours on end at the Kid’s Zone, sponsored by KCAU 9.

The Kid’s Zone will be available from 12 to 7 p.m. and feature inflatables, Pony rides, balloon sculptures, a Rabbitary, face painting, and a petting zoo. Parents can purchase an all-day wristband for the inflatables for $20. Don’t forget to bring socks, as the inflatables can get hot.

Music

Saturday in the Park wouldn’t be possible without the many artists that bring in music lovers from across the tri-state area. Here’s the performance schedule for each stage:

Starting Monday, Metro is changing its shuttle bus service for riders affected by the shutdown of four Red Line stations in Montgomery County, Maryland, aiming to improve travel times and decrease bus congestion.

The “Limited 2” shuttle, which stops at Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Fort Totten stations, will be replaced by two new, “more-efficient express shuttle loops,” Metro said in a news release .

The goal of the express loops is to help riders get to their destinations more quickly.

In addition to the shuttle bus service changes, Metro said that it’s amending its estimated travel times for the following shuttle buses.

The local shuttle, which stops at each station between Glenmont and Fort Totten, will run every 8-12 minutes, and the estimated travel time is 65 minutes.

The limited shuttle, which stops at Glenmont, Wheaton and Fort Totten stations, will run every 8-12 minutes and the estimated travel time is 45 minutes.

The Forest Glen Express shuttle, which stops at Forest Glen and Fort Totten stations, will run every 8-12 minutes and the estimated travel time is 50 minutes.

The Silver Spring Express shuttle, which stops at Silver Spring and Fort Totten stations, will run every 8-12 minutes and the estimated travel time is 40 minutes.

The express shuttle, which runs between Silver Spring and Metro Center, will run every 8-12 minutes and the estimated travel time is 45 minutes.

The Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring stations will remain closed through Aug. 31 for construction of the Maryland Purple Line project, during which a new mezzanine will be built to connect the coming light rail line to Metro at the Silver Spring station.

Stolen 16th-century painting, found at a bus stop, sells for record $22M

“The Rest on the Flight into Egypt,” by the Venetian artist Titian, was stolen from its owner’s home in 1995 and recovered seven years later by an art detective.

travel bus art

An early Titian masterpiece — once looted by Napolean’s troops and a part of royal collections for centuries — caused a stir when it was stolen from the home of a British marquess in 1995. Seven years later, it was found inside an unassuming white and blue plastic bag at a bus stop in southwest London by an art detective, and returned.

This week, the oil painting “The Rest on the Flight into Egypt” sold for more than $22 million at Christie’s. It was a record for the Renaissance artist, whom museums describe as the greatest painter of 16th-century Venice. Ahead of the sale in April , the auction house billed it as “the most important work by Titian to come to the auction market in more than a generation.”

“This result is a tribute to the impeccable provenance and quiet beauty of this sublime early masterpiece by Titian, which is one of the most poetic products of the artist’s youth,” Orlando Rock, chairman of Christie’s U.K., said in a statement .

The small, 18 1/4-by-24 3/4-inch canvas is believed to have been painted around 1510 , the auction house said.

It is inspired by a biblical event, when Joseph took Mary and a young Jesus to Egypt after a dream warned him that King Herod was seeking to kill his son, Christie’s said. The painting depicts Mary cradling Jesus as Joseph looks on in a rural setting.

The colors are luminous and rich, dominated by primary hues such as Mary’s deep red robe and ultramarine-blue cloak.

Titian is known for his use of the “colorito” technique, where color is employed dominantly for sensual expressive purposes and as an element of the composition. He gained international fame for his religious paintings, incisive portraits and poetic renditions of mythological subjects, the Metropolitan Museum of Art says.

Titian was born Tiziano Vecellio in a small town in the Dolomite mountains, according to London’s The National Gallery and is said to have arrived in Venice at the age of 10. He found early success with his work on the facade of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi on the Venetian Grand Canal, the museum says, adding that Titian went on to become the principal painter at the court of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He died of the plague in 1576.

“The Rest on the Flight into Egypt” has also captured attention for its provenance, not just its record price.

While it is not known who commissioned the painting, it is first documented as part of a Venetian spice merchant’s collection in the early decades of the 17th century, according to Christie’s .

In the following centuries, the auction house says, the painting passed through multiple hands, including an English duke and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, and was looted from Vienna by Napoleon’s troops but returned to the city after his fall. Ultimately, it was acquired by John Alexander Thynne, the 4th Marquess of Bath in 1878.

However, the painting’s dramatic story continued to unravel. In 1995, it was stolen from Thynne’s home in Wiltshire, southwest England, and recovered miraculously in 2002 following the announcement of a $127,000 reward, Christie’s said in April ahead of the auction. Charles Hill, a leading art detective, found it inside a bag without its frame at a London bus-stop, it added.

“This picture has captured the imaginations of audiences for more than half a millennia and will no doubt continue to do so,” Rock from the auction house said in a statement after the sale.
