The 15 Best Texas Hill Country RV Parks

' src=

  • Campgrounds and RV Parks

sunrise over Texas Hill Country

Enchanted Rock State Park is a must-see in Texas Hill Country

15 Top-Rated Texas Hill Country RV Parks

Texas isn’t all flat. These Texas Hill Country RV parks are a great base camp to explore the crossroads where West Texas, South Texas, and Central Texas meet.

Many people view Hill Country as the dividing line between the southwest part of the country and the southeast. Covering 41 counties, Texas Hill Country features rugged terrain consisting of hills made of granite and limestone.

Most of the hills stretch around 500 feet above the valleys and plains. Packsaddle Mountain stretches 800 feet above the Llano River. The country’s second-largest granite dome, Enchanted Rock, is found in Texas Hill Country.

The area offers a wide range of fun activities, including kayaking on the Medina River, exploring caverns, swimming in natural spring waters, visiting the Apple Capital of Texas, and exploring some of the small towns you will find while traveling two-lane roads. You won’t regret spending time in San Marcos, New Braunfels, and Luckenbach (the smallest community in Texas). With over 50 wineries in Hill Country, you’re sure to discover a new favorite wine.

Be sure and visit Colorado Bend State Park and Inks Lake State Park. You will see lots of prickly pear cactus and yucca, as well as Texas Live Oak and Asha Juniper trees. The Guadalupe, Frio, Medina, San Antonio, and Nueces Rivers all start in Hill Country.

With so much to see and experience in Texas Hill Country, plan on spending several days in the area. Choose one of the top-rated campgrounds listed below and relax under the Texas stars while planning the next day’s adventure. Plan your travels with RV LIFE Trip Wizard and the RV LIFE App to find more great destinations and points of interest along the way.

1. Nueces River RV & Cabin Resort, Camp Wood

Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country on the banks of the Nueces River, the Nueces River RV and Cabin Resort features a quarter mile of shoreline. The campground is less than two hours from San Antonio, making it the perfect place to call home while in the area.

The resort features smooth, tree-lined streets perfect for an evening walk or a bike ride. Take a dip in the pool or play outdoor games including cornhole, basketball, and volleyball. There is an onsite driving range as well.

The resort has 29 pull-thru and 14 back-in sites. All sites have a concrete pad and include full hook-ups, a picnic table, fire ring, Wi-Fi, and cable. In addition, there are restrooms, a laundry facility, showers, two dump stations, and trash removal for guests’ convenience. There are 25 tent sites available for those without an RV.

Kids can run off some energy at the lighted playground with a swing set or hop around on the splash pad. Your furry friends aren’t forgotten; there is a dog park where they can play. The camp store has must-have camping supplies including ice.

Crystal-clear Nueces River offers plenty of recreational opportunities. You can kayak or float on an inner tube for about a mile from the Nueces Dam back to camp. There are plenty of swimming holes that offer great cliff jumping. You can also go fishing or simply just relax and enjoy the cool, refreshing water.

2. Texas Hills RV Haven, Tow

This quiet park on the banks of Lake Buchanan is the perfect place to recharge after an amazing day exploring Texas Hill Country.

All of their RV sites have full hook-ups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Traveling with friends without RVs? They can still enjoy the park’s rental cabins and lake house.

Lake Buchanan, one of the largest Highland lakes in Central Texas, boasts more than 120 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 22,000 acres.

Regardless of the season, there are plenty of good fishing opportunities. White and striped bass are plentiful in the spring as they head to the Colorado River. Largemouth bass can be found in the shallows part of the lake each fall. Smallmouth bass, Guadalupe bass, and many types of catfish are abundant as well.

The 14 Best Places To Camp In Texas

Snag a front-row seat to the state's biggest natural attractions.

travel camp tx

Covering 268,597 square miles, Texas is so large and diverse that it encompasses seven natural regions—the Gulf Coast, Pineywoods, Prairies and Lakes, Hill Country , South Texas Plains, Panhandle Plains, and Big Bend Country. Camping is the best way to snag a front-row seat to the state's biggest natural attractions. From the rugged desert terrain of Big Bend to the lush cypress swamps of the Pineywoods of East Texas, each region has unique attractions and ecosystems to explore. From hike-in primitive sites to full RV hookups, there's a campsite for every type of traveler. Want to bring your horse? Many state parks and natural areas even have equestrian sites. Climb the tallest peak in Texas, take a dip in the world's largest spring-fed swimming pool, and stargaze at International Dark Sky Parks. Don't forget to book ahead—campsites go quickly in peak seasons, especially during holidays and school breaks. Here are some of the best Texas camping escapes for your next vacation or weekend getaway.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

The Texas Panhandle is home to the second-largest canyon in the country, Palo Duro Canyon . Explore the rugged landscape on 30 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails. Keep an eye out for hoodoos, large rocks balanced on top of thin rock spires. Don't feel like roughing it? Snag one of the glamping sites complete with air conditioning, microwaves, and covered porches.

Padre Island National Seashore

Joe M. O'Connell/Getty

Wake up on the beach to the sound of waves at Padre Island National Seashore , a narrow barrier island with 66 miles of pristine coastline. (Don’t confuse this natural area with the crowded resort town of South Padre located 100 miles south.) One of the highlights of every visit is driving on the beach —a high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle is needed to reach most destinations. Plan your visit to align with one of the sea turtle hatchling releases that take place between mid-June and August. Camping is first-come, first-serve year-round.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Lance Stevens / 500px / Getty

This prime fall leaf-peeping destination is famous for a stand of orange-hued Uvalde bigtooth maples located along the park's East Trail. While the fall foliage is spectacular , the entire area along the banks of the Sabinal River is scenic year-round with 2,174 acres of grasslands and steep limestone canyons perfect for hiking, fishing, and stargazing. Birders will love a chance to see rare green kingfishers year-round.

Pedernales Falls State Park

jennifer m. ramos/Getty

Located only 30 west of Austin, this riverfront Hill Country haven feels much more remote. The Pedernales River, pronounced "peder-nah-les," winds through 5,212 acres of a former ranch and provides ample opportunities for swimming, paddling and tubing. Explore the ten trails on foot, mountain bike, or horseback . The 5.5-mile Wolf Mountain Loop offers scenic views. Solitude seekers should opt for primitive campsites that require a minimum two-mile hike.

Big Bend National Park

The Lone Star state's oldest national park is an outdoor adventure paradise with over 200 miles of hiking trails and 250 miles of roads (100 paved and 150 unpaved) to explore. The southern border of the park abuts the Rio Grande River for 118 miles offering a plethora of opportunities for rafting, canoeing and kayaking. March is typically wildflower season— bluebonnets , the Texas state flower, carpet the roadsides. Advance planning is a must for campers—the park's four developed campgrounds often sell out from February to April.

Caddo Lake State Park

copyright Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (Earl Nottingham)

Paddle through a spiderweb of bayous, sloughs, and ponds lined with bald cypress trees draped with Spanish moss at this East Texas hideaway. The 26,810-acre lake boasts over 50 miles of paddling trails and is home to over 70 species of fish. (A fishing license isn't required in state parks to fish from shore.) Snag one of their 46 campsites or ten historic cabins. Opt for one of the Mill Pond Camping Area sites, which are closest to the water.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Jeremy Woodhouse/Getty

Hugging the border with New Mexico, Guadalupe Mountains National Park is a true wilderness park and hiker's wonderland. The park is home to eight of the ten highest mountains in Texas and not a single paved road. The trek to top the 8,751-foot Guadalupe Peak, the state's tallest mountain, is the biggest draw.  If you're looking for a place to unplug, there's no better spot than the park's three developed campgrounds—only one (Frijole Horse Corral Campground) has cell reception and none have showers. The nearest shower is in Whites City, New Mexico, 31 miles away.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

provided to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Walk in the steps of dinosaurs at this 1,587-acre park near Fort Worth . Two types of dinosaurs— Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidon proteles—left tracks in the mud along the edge of an ancient ocean. There are five track site areas on the bed of the Paluxy River spread throughout the park and visibility is usually best when water levels are lower in late summer. Stop by the park headquarters to pose for a photo with two fiberglass dinosaurs—a 70-foot-tall apatosaurus and a 45-foot-tall tyrannosaurus rex, former attractions from the 1964-65 New York’s World’s Fair.

Balmorhea State Park

The star attraction of this high desert oasis is the crystal-clear waters of the world's largest spring-fed swimming hole . The 1.3-acre pool is perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming. This isn't just a summer respite—the water temperature ranges from 72 to 76 degrees year-round. To be the first in the water in the mornings, book one of the 33 campsites with water and electric hookups.

Big Bend Ranch State Park

Mark Newman/Getty

The largest state park in Texas encompasses 238 miles of multi-use trails prime for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. After a day of exploring, spend your evenings relaxing and stargazing. (The park is one of four International Dark Sky Parks in the state and the only one with a Class 1 Bortle Scale ranking making it one of the best spots for stargazing.) All campsites are primitive, and most are accessible by car.

Colorado Bend State Park

Olga Melhiser Photography/Getty

Colorado Bend State Park is a rugged, unspoiled wilderness along a six-mile stretch of the Colorado River. It's an adventure lover's dream with a series of spring-fed swimming holes, 35 miles of hiking trails, including the three-mile roundtrip hike to the 70-foot Gorman Falls, and some of the best mountain biking trails in the state. The most famous attraction is a series of 400 caves. Book one of the two guided tours, the easy Discovery Tour or the action-packed Adventure Tour that involves crawling and climbing through caverns. All the campsites, even the 15 drive-up spots, are primitive.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Peter Tsai Photography/Getty

This enormous pink granite dome is an oasis for rock climbers with over 40 climbing routes and a plethora of other activities from hiking to geocaching. Attend one of the regular nighttime Rock Star Parities to stargaze and learn about the night sky. ( The park is an International Dark Sky Park and updates its website every 15 minutes with data from a sky quality meter.) The park draws more than 250,000 visitors a year, making it one of the most visited parks in the state.

Sea Rim State Park

Getty Images/Matthew White

You can spend the night on a floating platform at the state’s only public floating campsite at Sea Rim State Park near Port Arthur in southeast Texas. You’ll need a canoe or kayak to get there; but if you don’t own one, you can rent from a boat vending machine at the launch area. Alternatively, you can camp on the park’s beach side, which offers 15 developed and 75 primitive sites, plus a cabin that holds six people.

Seminole Canyon State Park

Getty Images/Hundley Photography

Book a spot in the small campground at Seminole Canyon State Park , laid out among the prickly pear and scrub. Visitors can access the primitive hunter-gatherer rock shelters within the park via daily ranger-led tours. The faded yellow, red, black, and white pictographs feature animals, human figures, and abstract designs that researchers believe tell the story of the ancient peoples’ cultural belief systems.

Luckenbach was settled in the mid-1800s by German immigrants. The town's population peaked at around 500 in the early 1900s, but by the 1960s it had dwindled to just three residents. It is perhaps best known for its ties to country music. In the 1970s, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson recorded a hit song called "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)," which helped put the town on the map. Today, Luckenbach is a popular destination for live music, with regular performances by local musicians. Read More

The park is centered around Enchanted Rock State Park , a massive dome-shaped pink granite rock formation that rises 425 feet above the surrounding terrain. The rock is estimated to be around 1 billion years old and is believed to have been formed by molten magma that cooled and solidified underground. Rider Information

Rider Level: 3, 4

Terrain: Hilly

The road surface quality in Fredericksburg is predominantly comprised of chip seal surfaces and has numerous cattle guards. The terrain is consistently rolling, with quiet, narrow roads. Many climbs are relatively short and average around 6% so the climbing is accumulated throughout the ride. Texas Ride Camps are best suited for our Type 3 and Type 4 Riders. Type 4+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer. Averages and totals are calculated from our "Avid Ride" options.

Daily Average

51 miles | 82 kilometers

356 miles | 572 kilometers

2,285 feet | 696 meters

16,000 feet | 4,876 meters

On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Non-riders are welcome on a Ride Camp trip if they are staying in the same room with a riding guest. The riding guest will be required to pay the single supplement fee for a private room and a meal package ($200 for 7-day trips which include all breakfasts and four dinners or $100 for 4-day trips which include all breakfasts and two dinners) for the non-rider to dine with the group]. Please contact a trip consultant for details and to book a non-riding companion. Some of these activities have additional costs and can be arranged through the hotel's concierge. Some non-riding options on this trip are:

  • Explore Fredericksburg's Urban Wine Trail
  • Boutique shopping along Historic Main Street
  • Live music and Texas two steppin'
  • Explore local historic monuments and museums
  • Visit the Sauer-Beckman Living History Farm

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Ride Camp is a mix of a guided and self-guided tour, focused on building base miles for your cycling season or for a big event. As a result, these trips concentrate on the physical dimension and not on the sightseeing incorporated into our other vacations. We also assume that guests are more self-sufficient than our “all-inclusive” style trips.
  • Trek Travel Ride Camps are designed for larger groups of up to 30 riders.
  • Finding the best routes in Texas means there may be limited services during rides. There may not be traditional restrooms available on some routes, but there will be plenty of trees.
  • West Texas winds can be either your friend (tailwind), or foe (headwind). Your Trek Travel guide might suggest changes to routes when winds pick up.

Camp Activities and Facilities

Each camp’s various activities and facilities are crucial in creating a well-rounded and engaging experience for your child. Whether your child is interested in water sports, equestrian activities, hiking, or specialized workshops, ensuring that the camp aligns with their interests is essential.

Evaluate the quality of accommodations, dining areas, and recreational spaces to guarantee your child’s comfortable stay. A camp with diverse and well-maintained facilities enhances the overall experience, providing opportunities for both adventure and relaxation.

Read Testimonials and Reviews

To gain valuable insights into the camp experience, take the time to read testimonials and reviews from other parents and campers. Reviews can be found on the camp’s website, social media platforms, or dedicated review sites, offering perspectives on the atmosphere, staff, and overall satisfaction of past participants.

These firsthand accounts provide a glimpse into the day-to-day experiences of campers and their parents. A well-reviewed camp is more likely to deliver on its promises, ensuring a positive experience for your child.

Budget Considerations

Summer camp costs can vary significantly, and it’s crucial to determine your budget before exploring options. Understanding your financial constraints will help you narrow down camps that align with your budgetary considerations. Some camps may offer financial aid, discounts, or installment plans, so inquire about available options to make an informed decision.

While budget considerations are essential, it’s equally important to weigh the overall value the camp provides. A slightly higher investment may be justified if the camp offers your child a more enriching and fulfilling experience. Striking a balance between budget and value will help you make a decision that aligns with your financial goals.

Our favorite kid-friendly Texas state parks are here in no particular order.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

Our 12 Favorite Kid-Friendly Campgrounds in Texas

1. dinosaur valley state park.

If your kids love dinosaurs, Dinosaur Valley State Park is a great place to explore the dinosaur tracks in the Paluxy riverbed, especially while the water is low. Wander around the giant dinosaurs while imagining what it was like when the beasts lived here millions of years ago. Just a short drive from Fort Worth, you can camp, picnic, swim, fish, hike 20 miles of trails, geocache, mountain bike, watch for wildlife, and visit the interpretive center. Forty-four campsites have water, electricity, a picnic table, and a fire ring or grill for your convenience. You can also access walk-in and hike-in campsites or group camps for 20 and 40 people.

2. Lost Maples State Natural Area

Kids will have fun stargazing at a dark sky, rated 3 out of 9 on the Bortle scale in Lost Maples State Natural Area , two hours northwest of San Antonio. You can hike along 10 miles of trails, including a loop leading to the top of a 2,200-foot cliff. Make a reservation for one of 30 campsites offering water and electric hookups, plus a hike to one of the primitive campsites. Fish in the Sabinal River or Can Creek, where you don’t need a fishing license. In the fall, the Lost Bigtooth Maples turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and yellow. The endangered golden-cheeked warbler and the recently delisted black-capped vireo make their home here. Download a birding checklist here .

Copper Breaks State Park

3. Copper Breaks State Park

Lake Copper Breaks has a designated swimming area for kids but there are no lifeguards. Plus, you can fish here at the pier and use the fish cleaning station. Stargaze at this International Dark Sky Park and visit the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd that lives in the park. Kids can hike the Juniper Ridge or Rocky Ledges Loop trails, explore Chris’ Link or MTB Loop on a mountain bike, camp, paddle, canoe, kayak, and pursue the Ranger programs. See spectacular sunrises and sunsets here.

4. Tyler State Park

Tyler State Park’s 64-acre spring-fed lake is an excellent place to swim in the summertime. Camp at water-only sites or full hookups shaded by 100-foot-tall trees. You’ll also find cabins and screened shelters. Explore the Pineywoods on Whispering Pines Nature Trail, mapped out more than 70 years ago by the Civilian Conservation Corps, plus 13 miles of hiking trails. Fish the East Texas lake on three fishing piers for bass, catfish, perch, or crappie. You can rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, stand-up paddleboards, jon boats, or rent regular boats year-round. The park store sells books, toys, gifts, souvenirs, snacks, fishing, and camping supplies. It’s one of my favorite RV campgrounds .

5. Kickapoo Caverns State Park

Kids will love the guided cave tours every Saturday afternoon with reservations required for Kickapoo Cavern and Stuart Bat Cave, west of San Antonio. Watch the Mexican free-tailed bat flight every evening from Stuart Bat Cave from mid-March through October. Enjoy birdwatching, geocaching, hiking, and mountain biking. Nearby, you’ll find restrooms with showers. Keep in mind that there is no trash disposal, so you must remove all your trash.

Caprock Canyon State Park Bison

6. Caprock Canyon State Park

Kids enjoy swimming, fishing, and no-wake boating in Lake Theo at Caprock Canyon State Park . Plus, hike the trail to Clarity Tunnel to see a bat flight every evening during the warm months. You’ll see the Texas State Bison Herd in the park, descendants of bison calves saved by Charles Goodnight and his wife, Mary Ann. The park encompasses the Caprock Escarpment, a long narrow rocky formation as high as 1,000 feet. Streams carved the vast canyons as they flowed to the Red, Brazos, and Colorado Rivers. You’ll see wildlife like mule, whitetail deer, coyotes, bobcats, and some pronghorn antelope across the canyonlands.

Reserve Park entry and camping fees online. You’ll find 10 campsites with 50-amp electricity and water, 25 campsites with 30-amp electricity and water, nine sites with water only along Lake Theo, picnic tables, grills, and restrooms nearby. 40 primitive walk-in campsites are 10 to 30 yards from the parking area, and 40 more primitive one-mile hike-in campsites have organic or composting toilets nearby. Please carry out all trash.

7. Texas State Railroad

Stay onsite at a historic railroad , a campground nestled in the Piney Woods near Rusk, where campers have access to depot amenities like a movie theater on train departure days, a gift shop, and lunch. Campsites are available with full hookups, water (may only be available with picnic tables), electricity, grills, fire rings, laundry facilities, and wi-fi hotspots. A campground office provides firewood, ice, and supplies for purchase.

Fish for small or largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, striped bass, or catfish. Ride the 4-hour round trip historic train between Rusk and Palestine on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday through the summer and fall. Ride the polar express from late November through December. Book early, as the holiday experience books up quickly.

kayakers at Caddo Lake State Park

8. Caddo Lake State Park

Paddle among tall bald cypress trees dripping with Spanish moss as you venture mystic Caddo Lake , an East Texas gem named for the Native Americans who lived in the area. Rent one of 10 historic cabins that sleep two to six people, a screened shelter with restrooms nearby, or one of 46 campsites ranging from full hookups to water only. The 26,810-acre Caddo Lake hosts over 70 species of fish. Rent a canoe or bring your kayak or canoe and explore 50 miles of paddling trails. Hike the miles of trails while you avoid the alligators in the park for your safety.

In 1835, imagine riverboats traversing from nearby Jefferson on the Big Cypress Bayou down to New Orleans, LA. After discovering oil below Caddo Lake in the early 1900s, Gulf Refining Corporation dammed the lake to accommodate oil drilling equipment in 1914. On July 4, 1934, Caddo Lake State Park opened.

Enjoy the fishing pier and boat ramp. Kids can earn a Junior Ranger Badge by accessing the activity journal.

Pedernales State Park

9. Pedernales State Park

30 miles west of Austin, at 5,212-acre Pedernales State Park , reserve your day pass for a picnic, an afternoon swim, or a hike. The swimming area is a quarter-mile hike across steep rock stairs with no handrail. Parents should closely supervise small children. Also, be cautious of quick rising water levels when it rains locally.

Make a reservation to spend the night at one of 69 campsites with hookups or primitive two-mile hike-in sites. Kids love to tube along the river in the summertime and watch for wildlife like deer, rabbits, armadillos, opossums, and raccoons at the bird blinds and butterfly garden. The endangered golden-cheeked warblers nest in the park and are protected. You can fish, mountain bike, geocache, or ride your horses in the park.

10. Garner State Park

I remember a song about Garner State Park by B.J. Thomas as a teenager. “Let’s go to Garner State Park; come along to Garner State Park. In the western part of Texas, 90 miles from San Antonio, there’s a place I go each summer when I get the urge to roam…” a song about a boy and girl who meet at Garner State Park and fall in love. The song ends with “I’ll be back again next year.”

Kids have the best fun floating the Frio River on an inner tube along a 2.9-mile river winding through 1,774 acres of hill country terrain. There are paddle boats, 16 miles of hiking trails, miniature golf, bicycles, canoes, and dancing to the jukebox at the park’s concession building.

Camp at New Garner at over 184 sites with full hookups and 75 sites with water. Old Garner has 39 full hookup sites and 49 sites with water only. Seventeen cabins with or without fireplaces offer kitchen and bathroom facilities, where you bring your linens, dishes, and utensils. A group camp that accommodates 40 people is available with five shelters, each with four sets of bunk beds sleeping eight. Kitchen facilities are available, and restrooms and showers are nearby.

11. Inks Lake State Park

Inks Lake provides a myriad of water sports and activities for campers in this area of Central Texas. Inks Lake State Park is only an hour’s drive from Austin and is also known as the gem of Hill Country. Most of the 200 tent and RV sites are very close to the lake for easy access.

Activities are plentiful with hiking, geocaching, and picnicking being the favorites on land.  Campers can swim at Devil’s Waterhole or explore scenic waterfalls upstream from the lake when Valley Spring Creek is running. You can even loan the fishing gear inside the park.

12. Meridian State Park

Limestone bluffs, a clear, no-wake lake, and natural springs are waiting for you at Meridian State Park in the DFW area. Know that there are only 8 sites available for RVs 20′ and up and 6 electric sites for trailers 19′ and under. With such limited sites, make sure you reserve early.

The park offers swimming and birding, but the best thing about MSP is the hiking on the Bosque Hiking Trail where you can see fossils in the limestone.

These state parks bring back great memories of when I was a kid, my kids have great memories also, and now we are bringing my grandkids camping.

RV and Tent Camping Safety Tips

When camping with kids, safety is paramount for a fun and worry-free experience. Teach them basic wilderness safety: stay close, never wander alone, and know the campsite location. Pack essentials like a first aid kit and emergency contacts. Educate them on wildlife safety, such as not approaching unknown animals. Finally, have a plan for emergencies and practice fire safety.

Best Places To Camp In Texas

Texas isn’t short of great camping spots. Whether you’re looking for an idyllic spot to park your RV or a secluded place to pitch your tent, Texas has got you covered with its multitude of national and state parks .

You’ll find stunning landscapes all over the state where you can rest for the night and wake up to glowing rivers, deserts mountains, and magical seashores. There are ancient caverns to explore, mountains to hike, spring-fed spools to bathe in, and some awesome rivers to raft and fish in.

In this article, we take a look at the best places to camp in Texas from the banks of the Rio Grande River in Big Bend National Park to the shores of Padre Island, so you pick the best camping spot in Texas for you.

During peak times, such as school holidays, it’s best to reserve your campsite in advance, which can do by following this link .

Texas Camping

Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park is often referred to as a hiker’s paradise and it’s easy to see why. The park is located in the southwest of the US, not far from the border with Mexico , and it stretches across more than 800,000 acres of land. There are hundreds of spectacular desert and mountain paths for you to choose from, and walking along the banks of the Rio Grande with towering mountains in the background is something you’re unlikely to forget (alternatively, you can choose to hike in the mountains and gaze down at the river lying thousands of feet below).

It’s also a hotspot for wildlife, so nature lovers are in for a real treat – keep your eyes open for many reptiles, birds, mammals, and fish you might come across on your wanders.

Setting up camp in the Big Bend National Park is a great way to make a base from which to explore its many treasures. The park service runs three front-country campsites within the park itself, which have access to drinking water and toilets. You can take your pick from the Chisos Basin Campground , located at the foot of a mountain basin, the Rio Grande Village Campground , with tranquil river vibes, or the Cottonwood Campground , situated in a cool shaded patch of woodland. If you’re on four wheels, then you’ll be please to know that there’s also a camping area specifically for RVs (with full hook-ups) operated by Forever Resorts.

If getting off the beaten track is more your style, and you’re willing to give up the luxury of campsite facilities, then backcountry camping might be more up your street. While is it permitted in the park, and there are some awesome designated spots, make sure you pick up a permit first.

Reservations are an absolute must (do NOT expect to rock up last minute and blag yourself a spot) and things get particularly busy during the months of November-April, so you’ll need to book months in advance. The campsites are currently limiting group sizes to 8 people due to COVID-19 but check the website for the latest details.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Situated in Central Texas is one of the state’s most striking geographical features, Enchanted Rock. The ‘rock’ is technically more of a mountain, and its pink granite structure reaches a peak at 1,825 ft, offering spectacular hill country views. There are plenty of trails to keep hiker’s entertained, and rock climbers can even get the chance to get up close and personal with this mystical rock – just make sure you sign a waiver and stick to the rules of the area (see here for a map of climbing spots and details of the rules and regulations).

If you really want to unwind and get in touch with nature while you’re there, there are even stargazing trips you can organize with park rangers.

There are plenty of camping options surrounding the base of the pink mountain. There are 35 campsites with access to water that will cost you around 18 bucks a night (check out this page to see where exactly the sites are located). Plus, there are various ‘primitive’ campsites located right in the thick of the countryside for $14/night, but make sure you’re able to walk the 1-3 miles over tricky terrain to reach them!

There’s also a separate campsite for larger groups (up to 50 people) that costs $100/night (no water is provided and it’s a 0.75-mile walk from the parking area). And remember, you’ll also have to pay a park fee of $8 each day of your trip.

Texas Camping

Padre Island National Seashore

It’s easy to home in on mountain and desert landscapes when you think about camping trips in Texas, but let’s not forget the incredible shoreline it has to offer too. The Padre Island National Seashore is located on North Padre Island, which is proudly the largest undeveloped barrier island on the entire planet.

The park is just a stone’s throw away from the Texan coastline and the park encompasses more than 130,000 acres of protected primitive landscapes, featuring sand dunes, tidal flats, and prairies. These environments are crucial for various marine ecosystems and, if you’re there at the right time of year (mid-June to August), you might be lucky enough to witness Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchlings making their first teenie steps towards the shore.

What’s more, the Laguna Madre is one of the saltiest (hypersaline) lagoons on earth, and there are tonnes of water-based activities you can take part in to experience it to the full, including fishing, kayaking, and windsurfing (it’s world-famous for its windsurfing spots!).

Hands-down the best way to fully appreciated this magical place is to stick around for a few days and take your time enjoying the wildlife and trying out various activities. There are campsites open all year round, and they operate on a strictly first-come first-serve basis – which is great for any last-minute holiday goers.

Take your pick from the developed Malaquite Campground, which has toilet and shower facilities, or the Bird Island Basin Campground, which has only chemical toilets. Alternatively, for a more rustic experience, you pitch up in one of the totally primitive camping spots right on the beach (but you’ll still need to pick up a free permit as you pass the kiosk into the park). There aren’t any RV hook-ups within the park, although there is an RV dump station and a place for campers to top up their water supplies.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Canyons are an iconic feature of America’s landscape, and Texas is home to the second-largest canyon in the country, the Palo Duro Canyon – often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Texas. The canyon really is a marvel of nature, and it stretches for just under 200 km and is a whopping 32 km wide at places.

The Palo Duro Canyon State Park itself is located less than half an hour’s drive from Amarillo, and it costs just $8 to enter. Once inside, there are heaps of ways to explore the canyon – take your pick from a hike, mountain bike tour, horse ride, or a super scenic car trip. The dramatic rock towers, clearly visible layers, and distinct mesa make the canyon impressive to behold, so it’s not surprising that this is one of the most-visited parks in the US.

It’s also a very camping-friendly park, and you can take your pick from various campsites that are hooked up to water and electricity supplies ($26/night), some slightly cheaper ones that only provide water ($16/night), and primitive campsites with zero supplies ($12/night)… but make sure you’re up for the half a mile hike to get there from the car park.

Oh, and there are even horse sites ($12/night) with full water access in case you’re visiting with a four-legged friend. Although most of the campsites can be booked online , the primitive campsite uses a first-come-first-serve basis, so we recommend giving them a quick call in advance to see how busy they are.

Texas Camping

Colorado Bend State Park

The Colorado Bend State Park is a luscious state park situated in the Hill Country region of Texas. The Colorado Bend river offers ample fishing and paddling opportunities (it’s awesome for bass fishing and you don’t even need a license, winning), and if you feel like relaxing while you’re out in the wilderness, then why not take a dip in the Spicewood Springs and really rejuvenate yourself as you soak up the surrounding scenery.

Plus, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, then we definitely recommend booking on to one of the guided wild cave tours – experiencing the case in their natural state while you scramble around illuminated your way with nothing but a head torch is something you’re unlikely to forget. The river, caves, springs… and even sinkholes, can all be explored on foot too, and there are loads of awesome hiking routes in the area – the Gorman Falls Trail is one of the most popular, so we definitely recommend checking it out if you have time.

In terms of camping,  be warned that the park takes a no-frills approach to its campsites. While this means that there are no RV hook-ups to be found anywhere, there’s something nice about going back to basics when you’re in the wilderness. There are primitive sites you can drive to  ($15/night), walk to (you’ll have to carry your luggage roughly 50 yards; $13/night), or hike to (you’ll have to carry your gear for around a mile; $10/night – the latter two of which have no water or toilets). For larger groups, there are group camping sites available with water and composting toilets available.

Address: 2236 Park Hill Drive, Bend, Texas

Caddo Lake State Park

Right on the cusp of the Texas-Louisiana border (on the Texas side) you’ll find Caddo Lake State Park , an enchanting area of outstanding natural beauty thanks to its piny trees flanking its glassy bodies of water. The park is located to the west of Lake Caddo, which is one of just a few natural lakes in Texas.

Such a cool lake has long attracted anglers from near and far, and there are over 70 different kinds of fish for you to have a go at, including catfish, crappie, bass, and pickerel (and again, no license is needed, yay). Canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities, and there are well-mapped-out paddle routes that you can explore – just make sure that you’ve brushed up on your alligator safety tips first (and only swim in the designated areas)!

In terms of camping , there’s quite a mix for you to choose from – the 46 campsites include ones with full hook-ups (8 sites; $20/night), tent sites with electricity (18 sites; $15/night), tent sites with water (28 sites; $10/night) – all have restrooms nearby and all have a few camping sites that are wheelchair-friendly too. Plus, if you fancy upgrading, there are screened shelters ($25/night) with picnic tables and electricity inside and even rustic cabins ($115/night) to rent.

Address: 245 Park Rd 2, Karnack, Texas

Texas Camping

Inks Lake State Park

And finally, last, but by no means least, on our list of the best camping spots in Texas is the Inks Lake State Park , located roughly 50 miles from Austin. The lake is great for year-round water fun, and it draws hundreds of anglers a year hoping to try their luck at catfish, sunfish, and bass (and… there’s no need for a license).

As well as the usual swimmers and paddlers, you’ll also find scuba divers checking out what lies below. It’s a great lake for waterskiing too, but don’t worry – there are large no-wake zones too to keep things calm. Plus, there are tonnes of trails that’ll lead you around the rocky outcrops in the surrounding areas, offering glimpses of the calm waters down below.

It’s home to tones of campsites (almost 200 to be precise), some with hook-ups, some with electricity, some with water, and some primitive, and prices range from $11 to $23/night.

Address: 3630 Park Road 4 W, Burnet, Texas

So, there you have it, the top places to camp in Texas. As we’ve seen, there really is a range of landscapes to choose from – sandy shorelines, majestic lakes, luscious forests, and even pink mountains… Texas really does have it all!

Keep in mind I came during winter, AKA without the intention to swim and before the zip line opened for business. I booked a dog-friendly cabin for my partner's birthday. We had an overall great time, but for a glamping situation, there are both pros and cons. Pros: - family friendly! This place is big, didn't see any threats like bears, and had wholesome weekend activities for the kids that adults could enjoy too. I would be more than happy to bring little family members to experience the camp. - our bluebonnet cabin was very clean and seemed to be well designed. Good number of outlets, expandable tables, full kitchen, outlets near every bed, smart tvs, etc. - generally a beautiful area and able to drive and park easily - the cliff carver was better than I expected. Beautiful sights, amazing at the sunset, and could really pick up speed! Lasts about 8-12 minutes depending on the speed you choose. For a tandem experience, it's about $35 well spent. However, I wish they were more careful about checking seatbelts and speaking out any warnings/concerns for kids and liability purposes. - all the staff were nice and polite! Haven't met anyone rude the entire time I was there. - every extra little thing like the activities/parks/etc were surprisingly fun..... even as an adult. Cons: - a lot of activities are an extra cost on top of an already pricy booking. Paying another fee for a particular unit is also annoying. - the cabins are so far that they're almost forcing you to pay for a golf cart. The carts are cute but at least make a sidewalk to and from the main area for the safety of children, pets, pedestrians, wheelchair users, etc. We chose to walk but with the amount of cars and the only way back is by road, there must be a sidewalk. - the after hours system should be changed. I'm glad they have a way for you to access your keys, but there is no protection. You just grab your keys and packet from a box in the front that anyone can grab. Why not have a code to access a box that changes everyday in an email sent out? Or just any other way to be safer about that. I could honestly come after hours, grab someone's keys, and cause a scene if I was actually that bold. - it's odd that we have to leash our dogs at all times but a staff dog is unleashed and immediately comes up to other people's dogs. Liability about an animal attack would be unfair if santa's dog is unleashed. Santa was such a wholesome addition to the holidays, though, so I didn't say much then, but for everyone's safety, I hope the rules apply to all pets. The zip line wasn't open but it looked impressive! Although I think the place could refine a lot of safety issues, I would come back with the family again with close supervision.

Sabrina, Thank you for taking the time to leave a detailed review! To specifically address some of the issues you've mentioned — Specific campsites or cabins may be requested, but are not guaranteed. The site locking fee offers you the opportunity to guarantee your favorite campsite or cabin, which removes the chosen site from being automatically optimized. If you opt out of the locking fee, you are guaranteed your selected site or cabin type, but NOT the specific unit number. We have spoken with the staff member about having their dog on a leash. Thank you for bringing this to our attention! Our after-hours system has worked well for the past couple years, but we appreciate your feedback. We’ll take a look at the process and see what we can do. Again, thank you for sharing! Your feedback will help us make improvements to better serve our guests. We hope you’re willing to give us another chance in the future.

We stayed at camp fimfo in a willow cabin for a wedding onsite. To summarize.... Why is a tiny house $350/night with very few amenities? We've stayed at other resorts like margaritaville where for this price point you get WAY more amenities. I'm still not really sure why it's so expensive. They have the Guadalupe River on site- okay neat. They have a pool/splash pad- but the swim up bar is only open certain hours and you have to bring your own towels from your room/they don't provide them in the pool area (but we were advised you can buy towels at their general store...) The alpine carver isn't even included with the pricey stay. And even if it was it's only open Saturday/Sunday. It rained the free day we had and we really didn't have anything to do here. The house was so small we had to turn the couch at night for the pullout bed so that we could even squeeze/walk around it. We had friends staying in a treehouse- it doesn't even have a bathroom connected to it/they had to walk to their assigned bathroom. No coffee was provided for the "kitchenette". Navigating this place was a challenge- it's a labyrinth. Only reason I didn't give one star is because the property is well maintained/clean and the staff was friendly during interactions. But I would much rather go to garner or Guadalupe state park and use the cabins there for a fraction of the price and support local parks.

Photo of Jeff A.

So I heard about the cliff carver and decided to go check it out. It was a cool attraction and the kids had a blast, but.... I was very disappointed that I made a reservation for 2 pm 2 days in advance, arrived 30 minutes early, and STILL had to wait in line with everyone else... for almost an hour after my reservation time! There were people with later reservations than me were AHEAD of me in line.... Why am I making a reservation and still waiting in line?? This process needs to change. It just doesn't make sense. Either do away with the reservations or start honoring them...

We came to Camp Fimfo to ride their new mountain coaster, Cliff Carver. This mountain coaster, which is currently the only mountain coaster in Texas, takes you through the Texas Hill Country, delivering scenery and thrills along the way. First, you go up the first lift hill, and then you start zooming down some beautiful hills before going into a downward loop. Then, when you think the ride is over, you go through a second lift hill, and once again, go downhill, this time while navigating a series of twists and turns. Then, you go for a third lift hill, and then go into a drop that combines the twists and turns off the second drop with the downward loop of the first drop. Did I mention you do this while hugging the hills of the Texas Hill Country? In short, Camp Fimfo's Cliff Carver delivers an excellent mix of scenery and thrills. In addition to this, Camp Fimfo offers a modest-sized water park complete with water slides, a river to sit and float in, ziplines, and many other activities. They also have cabins here. We cannot comment on those as we did not stay here, although we would definitely consider staying here if we come to the area again.

Extreme camping experience.my cabin was disgusting! Roaches everywhere!! The room was infested. Crawling from the wall. Even inside of the fridge . It was a nightmare. Plus they never mentioned before booking that everything was closed. Seriously, I felt robbed.

travel camp tx

Liz, we sincerely apologize for your cabin experience! Can you please let us know what cabin you were in and/or what name your reservation was under so we can immediately address the situation? Please reply with this information or email [email protected] at your earliest convenience. As for operating hours, during the fall we have limited weekday operations. Aside from the pool, most of our water amenities are only open on the weekends until the end of October. Our hours are listed online and in the Guest Dashboard. We are sorry for the confusion! Update: As soon as you reported the issue to our park team at checkout, we discounted your rate for the experience you had during your stay. We thank you for being so appreciate of the refund and for your understanding. We addressed the issue immediately! Thank you again. We hope you are willing to give us another chance in the future.

Photo of Leah M.

Fimfo's concept while good was poorly executed. Our family stay over a Holiday weekend was challenging as the pools were overly crowded and deck area was littered with trash and leftover food, restrooms around pool area ran out of toilet paper early and by mid day were totally unusable, general store was not stocked to an appropriate level, and restaurant was very very poorly managed and unsanitary. Two rules that we noticed were completely disregarded were...1) website states no private golf carts...we saw a number of private carts. 2) website states no outside food/drink in the pool area....everyone had coolers filled with food/drink. On a positive side, the cabins were clean, cool, and very comfortable. Play areas (outside of pool) were clean and enjoyable. We did not participate in any of the organized activities but there was plenty listed in the daily activity menu. Alpine coaster was a lot of fun. And lastly, security was ample, friendly, and accommodating. We had planned another trip to Fimfo for later in the summer but canceled those reservations.

Jul 10, 2023

Leah, thank you for your feedback. We're thrilled you enjoyed your cabin and our attractions and amenities. For safety and liability reasons, guests are not permitted to bring any personal motorized vehicles into the campground. Personal golf carts are only allowed if needed for ADA purposes, in which case the proper tags are required. As for outside food/drink — food, drinks, and coolers are allowed in the waterpark. Glass, bottles or containers, and alcohol are not permitted and coolers are checked upon entrance to the pool area. Food is not allowed in any pools or spas. We've shared your feedback with the appropriate staff members. We hope you're willing to give us another chance in the future!

Your Ultimate Guide To State Parks In Texas

E ver wondered how many state parks in Texas you’d have to visit to experience them all? The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department currently operates 89 state parks, natural areas, and historic sites across the Lone Star State. In 2023, the state’s park system celebrated its 100th anniversary and won the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

While it certainly would take some time to visit every one of them, we can’t imagine a better way to see its many natural wonders and settings that are as dramatically beautiful as they are diverse. To help get you started, we have put together a collection of the best state parks in Texas – at least in terms of popularity and the recognition they have as favorites among hikers, campers, RVers, and hidden-gem hunters.

  • Most Popular State Parks In Texas

If you can imagine a type of terrain or environment, you’ll find it in at least one Texas state park. There are beaches, piney woods, rolling hills, vast lakes, towering dunes, arid deserts, subtropical zones, and even mountains. Short of snow skiing, you’ll find just about every type of seasonal activity in Texas, too. There are best spots for all times of the year, from the most refreshing places to cool off in the summer to the best Texas state parks in the fall leaf peeping. It’s no wonder many of the best state parks are popular for entirely different reasons. For the sake of this roundup, we went with reported visitor totals for most of this list starting with the top four.

Best State Parks In Texas To Camp

Best state parks in texas to rv, best state parks in texas for hiking, little-known state parks in texas, 1. ray roberts lake state park.

  • Location: Pilot Point, TX
  • Wow Factor: Sunset views, especially high above the water at the Lone Star Lodge
  • Need To Know: This park has nine units across three counties, each with varying amenities and features, including a couple of marinas, a lodge, boat ramps, and more.

More than 870,000 people annually visit this expansive park just an hour's drive north of Dallas-Fort Worth. Boating, fishing, and swimming in the waters of the 29,000-acre lake tops the list of things to do in Ray Roberts Lake State Park . The Sanger Unit of the park has the full-service Lake Ray Roberts Marina, while a smaller one, Lone Star Lodge & Marina, is across the lake in the Jordan Unit. The park has several campgrounds, including eight equestrian campsites in the Isle du Bois Unit. In the fall, you can hike, bike, or ride horses on the 20-mile Greenbelt Corridor.

2. Garner State Park

  • Location: Concan, TX
  • Wow Factor: Huge Jukebox Dances at the concession stand every night of the summer starting Memorial Day weekend
  • Need To Know: Be mindful of the park's feral hogs that will sneak into your coolers and other food storage if left unattended.

In the summer, this park is famous for its nightly Jukebox Dances, when parking lots often reach capacity. Of course, there are many other things to do in Garner State Park , starting with paddling or floating the 2.9 miles of the beautiful Frio River that runs through the park. You can rent tubes and kayaks there. On land, this Texas Hill Country destination has over 16 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging. Trail features include overlooks of hills and the Frio Canyon, a rock fence, huge live oak, and the 30-foot-deep Crystal Cave. The park has several campsites, screened shelters, and 17 cabins for overnight stays.

3. Cedar Hill State Park

  • Location: Cedar Hill, TX
  • Wow Factor: Seeing what farm life was like in the 1800s touring historic and reconstructed buildings on what was the Penn Farm, settled in 1854
  • Need To Know: Cedar Hill was named a Texas Bird City in 2023, and you can expect to see any of the documented 200 species of birds at this state park.

People in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are within easy proximity to this park 18 miles southwest of Dallas, making it a popular getaway from the bustle of urban life. While the gravel beach of the 7,500-acre Joe Pool Lake is a popular spot in the summer, the many things to do in Cedar Hill State Park year-round make it one of the best state parks in Texas in winter, too. You can tour the historic Penn Farm, hike or ride miles of excellent mountain biking trails, and fish for bass, crappie, and catfish. The park has 350 campsites across its campgrounds, with 150 of them having full hookups.

4. Palo Duro Canyon State Park

  • Location: Canyon, TX
  • Wow Factor: The second-largest canyon in the US
  • Need To Know: While the park offers several cabin and campsite options, you can also book luxury canyon floor glamping sites separately through Palo Duro Glamping.

Things to do in Palo Duro Canyon State Park – besides taking in the glorious views, of course – include hiking, biking, and horseback riding on the park's 30-plus miles of trails. An all-terrain wheelchair is available to reserve. Tuesday through Sunday in the summer, you can see the TEXAS Outdoor Musical at the Pioneer Pavilion. The park has 97 campsites with electricity, including three certified ADA-accessible sites. There are an additional 19 tent-only campsites with water; 10 equestrian sites; four primitive, hike-in sites; and two group-camp areas. There may be no better way to connect with the land of this beautiful state than by staying in the heart of nature’s sights and sounds. Some of the best camping in Texas can be found within the state parks. We’ve rounded up several places that offer sites that appeal to lovers of land and water and range from rugged to remarkably educational.

7. Dinosaur Valley State Park

  • Need To Know: Sometimes you can't see the dinosaur tracks, depending on weather conditions and trail closures. Be sure to check ahead of time.

This park is located about 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth and, as you may have guessed by its name, a dinosaur discovery experience is its claim to fame – dinosaur tracks, that is. Set up camp and head straight to the Paluxy River to see the fossilized footprints in the riverbed where dinos once roamed. There are 44 campsites with electricity (no trailers over 35 feet), eight walk-in primitive campsites, and seven hike-in primitive sites. The hike-in sites require you to wade the river, so be sure to check typical water levels in advance before landing on that plan. The park also has two group camps that accommodate 20 or 40 people when reserved ahead of time. Besides scoping out the dino tracks, other things to do in Dinosaur Valley State Park include hiking and mountain biking, geocaching, swimming, paddling, fishing, and horseback riding.

The star of the trail system is the one-mile Whispering Pines Nature Trail with remnants of a wading pool and a small waterfall, all of which the Civilian Conservation Corps built over 70 years ago. If you want to set up camp and stay a while at this Northeast Texas gem, the park has 57 campsites with full hookups and 42 with water, 12 of which also have electricity. This park in the West Texas town of El Paso is named for the natural basins formed in rocks there, or huecos – pronounced "whey coes," as instructed by the parks service. The tanks in the name is because the basins collect rainwater, which drew people to this arid Chihuahuan Desert site for many thousands of years. Hiking the rocks to see the petroglyphs and pictographs left by some of these early explorers is one of the most popular things to do in Hueco Tanks State Park . The park also offers excellent opportunities for rock climbing, and several guide services offer climbing packages. Campers can choose among 50 campsites, some with electricity and all with water.

At this park, you'll see flashy, bold colors of green jays, great kiskadees, and Altimira orioles, as well as thousands of migrating hawks during spring and fall migrations. The park has seven miles of trails for hiking, and biking is allowed on all but the 1.8-mile, wheelchair-accessible, 1.8-mile Rio Grande Trail.
