Baguio Will Always Be Baguio

There are places that you’ve been to and that place seems like a magnet to your soul that you keep on coming back. I’ve got that place in my heart and that is Baguio City. I always hear the pine trees calling me whenever there is a feeling deviated from my normal state – that takes place most of the time.   One Saturday morning, without thinking of any work on Monday, with nothing more than the clothes I wear, and nothing to capture the moment but only my smart phone, we hopped in a bus at Victory Station in Cubao  and dreamed while my eyes were open looking at the sceneries going up to Baguio. Its going to be a long and butt numbing bus ride but who cares I love long travels. I’ve got nothing but my expectations and hope for a cool and nice weekend in Baguio.  

    When we arrived in Baguio, we took a cab going to Teacher’s Camp – a rather hunted place for the many but a perfect retreat place for dreary being like me. You will sleep in a decades old rooms or dormitories, with lush of pine trees, and sweet hum of the myna in the morning – that’s what will you experience in Teacher’s Camp. It was my first time to stay in Teacher’s Camp and I prefer this place than any overprice old hotels in the noisy Session Road . If you want Baguio stay at Teacher’s Camp.   We took a nap and decided to see the night in Baguio along Harrison Road – you know what I mean.  

Its the Night Market!

  You won’t go to Baguio to shop for hand down clothes from Hong Kong, but why not? This seems to be an attraction in Baguio during the weekends nowadays.    Jackets, Bags, footwear, jeans, shirts, polo, belts —- everything is sold in the night market. I bought two nice sweater out of impulse for Php25.00 each. Anything more than Php30, I will not buy it. For the purposes of being thrifty at that moment. Aside from the clothes and related stuff, stalls of food items are also present. Your tummy can also do shopping of food – aka food trip.    The next day all I wanted was a cup of “taho” strawberry flavor of course.  

  We spend some time in Mines View Park for where you suppose to see the mountain ranges of Benguet if there is no fog covering the vista. We sat for  a while and contemplated the changes in that once pristine park. I remember a picture of mine riding a horse with cow boy hat. That picture was taken in the 90′ when Mines View Park is not yet dominated by a lot of souvenir shops that looks like a flee market, when there were no big dogs that are overly domesticated by man’s unlimited need of money, when Mines View is just like a park, that picture was the faded glory of the Mines View Park.   I bought a piece of buttered corn sprinkled with salt for our long walk to The Mansion . But not reaching the half way to the Mansion we saw a jeep and instinctively we hopped in it.

The Mansion 2009   We walk through Wright Park along with other tourist strolling and some, I presume,  residents of Baguio jogging beside the man-made lagoon. On its sides are manicured plants and flowers that can only be seen in cold places like Baguio. It was refreshing to see a  lot of blooming fresh flowers in the park. It makes me want to be there just to smell the aroma of the flowers, the  leaves and the trees.  

    We took a taxi to the public market in preparation for lunch but it turned out a window shopping for souvenirs and pasalubong back home. Walking in the market where organized stalls owners constantly singing their goods to the tourist strolling. I observed two things in the market, first everything is over price – same goods sold at Teachers Camp are much cheaper; and  initial prices will depend on your face value – they know that you are not from Baguio ergo prices are souring like a bird. I am not into too much haggling, but I guess you can discern the real value of a good.  

  I bought a vest with Igorot design for Php200.00 (original price was Php250.00). The intricate design, was similar to the “bahag” I used for our field demnstration when I was in Grade 2. Back then, I do not like the these kind of clothing. But as I travel in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia, I came to love our identity. Upon digging in our rich heritage and culture, I found out that our diversed culture is beautiful and unique.   

  Proudly wearing my Igorot vest, we walked to Burnham Park just to see the park. We’ve been there a many times in the last few years but we just want a glimpse of it and probably observe the people enjoying the park. After some time of staying there my two companion wanted to go back to Teachers Camp and enjoy the cold weather of Baguio on their bed. Me on the other hand went further to the City Hall. The Baguio City Hall  is another symbol of cultural identity of the city. It is a protected area and was declared a national cultural treasure.    I entered the City Hall and read its financial reports posted in the bulletin. I found out that Baguio City has an Internal Revenue Allotment of a little more than Php100 Million, just enough to feed the family of the civil servants of Baguio City.    I went up furher for my real agenda. I wanted to reach the clock tower and from there take an aerial view of the city or Burnham Park atleast. I reached the bell tower but I cannot open the steel gate… tsk… better luck next time.    After my sojourn in downtown Baguio I went to  Casa Vallejo  to watch an old film based from Nick Joaquin’s 1950’s play entitle  A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino . While waiting for the fillm, I swam in the rare titles of books in Mt. Cloud Bookstore and bought a collection of contemporary short stories.  

  Bored and sleepy I left the small movie house in Casa Vallejo with the movie almost finished. I was walking down on the side of Court of Appeals resthouse when I bumped in my two companion heading towards where I came from.     I told them “lets have a hot chocolate” We took the taxi and headed to Chocolate de Batirol inside Camp John Hay.   

  The next morning I wanted to walked around Teacher’s Camp before going back to Manila. Saying goodbye to the pinestrees, the birds and the air is never sad. The way of saying thank you to nature for making your spontaneous trip a memorable and inspiring one.   

  I was amazed by the houses (rest house) inside Camp John Hay. There is a Pink Mansion in Poblete Drive that I tried to knock to see if I can enter and see its detailed architecture. I wanted to enter the unlocked gate but I pulled back and continued walking towards other houses in that area.  

  Ending my weekend in Baguio lying under the pine trees looking at the sky was magical. Marvelous decade old trees are the treasures of Baguio City. Apart from Sesjsion Road’s restaurants, souvenirs of the public market, strawberries of La Trinidad, overlooking sight in the Mines View Park and the cold weather of the city, Baguio will always be Baguio because of the pine trees all over the city.       

  This is not my last blog post about Baguio because I’ll keep on coming back to the city that I love. If there is a chance to relocate and build my own family in Baguio, I would gladly abide to my fate’s path. Only the Lord knows. For now let me show my love for Baguio because Baguio will always be Baguio.

If it's your first time in the city and are wondering where to go in Baguio, put Burnham Park on your list. Considered the city's "mother of all parks," Burnham Park is one of Baguio's best attractions. It was named after urban planner Daniel Burnham, the American architect who came up with the original design and layout of the park.

They may be humble home-cooked dishes, but you'll be surprised by how packed they are with potent flavors that will make you crave more. Be sure to try their best-sellers; the Pinikpikan, Etag, and Pinuneg. 

Pinikpikan is an Igorot dish. The Igorots are one of the indigenous tribes in the Cordillera region, and they follow a unique ritual in preparing chicken soup. 

The Etag, on the other hand, is sundried or smoked pork. The meat is cured in salt for a week and then either sundried or smoked for several weeks.

Pinuneg is the Ibaloi Tribe's signature sausage. What makes it unique is that, unlike ordinary sausages, it's not made from ground meat. It is pig's blood sauteed in onions and other local spices. Baguio was a former mining town in the early 20th century. To get a glimpse of that past, you have to visit Mines View Park. This park sits on a ridge on the northeast side of Baguio. 

As such, its main attraction is a viewing deck that offers a stunning view of the Cordillera Mountains and Benguet's old copper and gold mines.

Tourists are given a chance to dress in traditional Ifugao garbs like bahag (loincloth), vests, and headdresses, and even hold a shield and spear for picture-taking.

Mines View Park is also a great spot to buy souvenirs. There are several shops here that sell woven items, knitted garments, wooden souvenirs, as well as silverwork.

You will also find rows of succulents, flowers, and bonsai trees you can purchase.

Visiting the strawberry farm in nearby La Trinidad along with other attractions is one of the top experiences you can't miss out on when you're in the Summer Capital.

La Trinidad, the capital of Benguet, is about 30 minutes from the Baguio town proper. This municipality is where you'll find hectares of land dedicated to growing strawberries to supply the rest of the country. It is one of the most popular  Benguet tours .

If you want to take your Baguio experience even further, there is no better way than to try strawberry picking at the La Trinidad Strawberry Farms.

The activity is open from November to May every year. The rates for this activity vary. If you leave the work to the professionals, you can buy freshly picked strawberries near the exits of the farm.

Aside from strawberries, you can also purchase fresh flowers and choose from a wide selection of fresh vegetables. Don't forget to try treats like fresh Strawberry Ice Cream and Strawberry Taho as well.

  6. Appreciate Art at BenCab Museum

Baguio is home to a vibrant art scene; from contemporary Filipino art to the distinctive traditional architecture of the Cordillera Region. 

Whether you're an art aficionado or you're looking to deepen your appreciation for Filipino art, be sure to drop by at BenCab Museum.

BenCab Museum is home to the permanent collection of Philippine National Artist Benedicto Cabrera. It also serves as a venue for art shows and exhibitions. 

The museum has several themed galleries. One of which is a gallery dedicated to original Cordillera art pieces such as sculptures, weapons, and paintings. Immersions in Bencab Museum is one of the best ways to enjoy the province and can also be enjoyed as a rainy season activity in the Philippines .

One of the prominent exhibits is BenCab's bulol collection. Bulol is an Ifugao rice god figurine carved from Narra wood. You won't miss this exhibit, as the display occupies a whole wall in the museum. 

Another fascinating exhibition is the Erotica Gallery, which features several paintings and sculptures that explore sensuality.

There is also the Indigo Gallery, which features the works of several renowned Filipino contemporary artists. 

Of course, the highlight of the museum is the gallery of BenCab himself. The BenCab Gallery houses the National Artist's masterpieces, which mostly feature Sabel, his best-known muse.  

Sabel was a real scavenger woman whom BenCab saw and photographed in 1965. She has since been the subject of several of BenCab's paintings.

Aside from the galleries, BenCab Museum also has a restaurant. Cafe Sabel serves the Cabrera family recipes and uses ingredients that are grown in the museum's garden. 

If you want to explore to learn more about the region's indigenous art forms, go on a Cordillera heritage tour and start with Tam-Awan Village. 

Built by the Chanum Foundation in 1998, Tam-Awan Village is modeled after native Ifugao villages to give people a glimpse of the other parts of the region.

The word Tam-Awan in the local dialect means vantage point. An apt name since the Tam-Awan Village sits on a hillside with a panoramic view of the South China Sea. 

With a stunning vista and lush greenery, you'll surely enjoy exploring the several Cordillera huts scattered around Tam-Awan Village. You can also go on a quick hike to several viewing decks in the village.

If you're not too keen on hiking, check out the art galleries in Tam-Awan Village. The village also holds regular exhibitions and cultural shows from both local and visiting artists.

For a more immersive experience, join Tam-Awan village tours and register for any of their workshops in drawing, oil painting, watercolor, and wood carving.

For those who want to stay for more than a day, the village also has a café where you can taste authentic Cordilleran dishes, as well as huts for lodging.

If you're unsure of what to do in Baguio at night, drop by the Baguio Night Market. Baguio is a famous bargain shopping hotspot. If you want to put your haggling skills to the test, there is no better place than the Baguio Night Market. This bargain-hunting haven is every thrifty fashionista's dream.

From 9 PM to 2 AM, a part of Harrison Road at the northeast of Burnham Park transforms into a flea market. Here you can find everything to complete a casual look without burning a hole through your wallet, thanks to the rows of ukay-ukay stalls. 

Ukay-ukay is the local term for surplus items shipped from other countries and second-hand apparel such as clothes, bags, and footwear that are sold at bargain prices.

Baguio Night Market is overflowing with ukay-ukay. It's the best place to shop for quality second-hand jackets, boots, clothes, and accessories for a fraction of their original price.

And if you're lucky or have great thrift-shopping skills, you can score one-of-a-kind vintage finds or even items that are in mint condition. 

After shopping, grab an ear of sweet corn, noodle soup, or other street food on the northern side of the hill.

Wright Park is one of the many scenic parts of Baguio. It is a quiet promenade with blossoming flowers, a pool lined with pine trees, and a long stairway that leads visitors to a riding circle.

Wright Park is considerably smaller than Burnham Park, but it is also less crowded and more peaceful. It is located in the eastern part of Baguio and fronts the main gate of The Mansion.

Wright Park's long rectangular pond is called the "Pool of Pines," which could not be a more perfect name as the length of the lake is flanked by pine trees on both sides. 

There is also a park circle and pavilion where you can sit, relax, and listen to the swaying pine. Wright Park is an open green space, so feel free to stroll around and admire its natural beauty.

Wright Park is often called Ride Park, an understandable mistake since the park is known for its horseback-riding activity. 

Indeed, Wright Park is the perfect place for people who love horses and want to learn how to ride one. It’s a great addition to the tourist spots often included on a day trip in Baguio . Follow the long stairway at the far end of Wright Park to reach the Riding Circle.

There you'll find several horses you can hire and ride around in the vicinity. If you're traveling with kids, good news! There are friendly ponies that are perfect for children.

Rest assured, every horse has an experienced handler who will guide and watch riders at all times. If it's your first time, the driver will lead the horse and walk alongside you as you ride.

10. Spend Time at The Mansion 

Located on the eastern side of the city, it is right in front of the idyllic Wright Park. This grand palace is easily one of the most photographed landmarks in Baguio. 

Although the main gate is open to the public, visitors are only allowed in The Mansion House Museum, where tourists can check out presidential memorabilia.

Aside from exploring the museum, the only other activity you can do here is picture-taking. So don't be shy about taking tons of photographs!

The Mansion's elegant main building is inspired by the Spanish Colonial Revival design, making it an excellent backdrop for any picture. You can also snap photos in front of the ornate iron gate or by the beautifully manicured lawn.

The Baguio Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful places in Baguio and provides a much-needed tranquil space amid bustling Baguio City. In 2009, the garden was renamed Centennial Park in celebration of Baguio's 100th year as the Summer Capital of the Philippines. 

However, it is more known as the Botanical Garden.

Exploring the garden is a whole adventure on its own, as it has several sections with different attractions. As you enter the park, you will be greeted by a giant sculpture. 

This bronze masterpiece is the work of Ben Hur Villanueva, a renowned Filipino sculptor. The statue represents the of the Cordillerans, Americans, Chinese, and Japanese in building Baguio.

Filled with pine trees, the Botanical Garden has two purposes. It serves as a hideaway in the often crowded city. It also houses nurseries dedicated to propagating flora that will eventually be replanted in the parks and gardens of Baguio. 

With the abundance of trees and different plants, the Baguio Botanical Garden is truly a great place to unwind. You can explore the various sections, sit by the benches, or have a snack under the cottages.

You will find pocket gardens and pavilions dedicated to Baguio's sister cities in countries such as South Korea, Japan, China, Canada, Thailand, and the USA.

These sections are decorated with symbols that represent each city. There are also relics from the Igorot Village, such as giant statues depicting different Cordillera tribes.

Aside from the pasalubong stores around Mines View Park, do not forget to drop by the Good Shepherd Convent, which is just a stone's throw away. 

Their acclaimed peanut brittle, ube, and strawberry jam have become synonymous with Baguio pasalubong. They are also now offering baked goodies like Lengua de Gato and alfajores, homemade ice cream, and strawberry-calamansi juice.

Nuns and volunteers from the international congregation The Religious of the Good Shepherd Sisters run the convent, with profits from Good Shepherd going to charity. 

Students of the Mountain Maid Training Center and Development Inc. create the products as part of the congregation's livelihood program for poor female students from Kalinga and Bontoc.

Be prepared to either line up for at least 30 minutes as you wait to be serviced or get heartbroken when your desired product goes out of stock.

Though, you may enjoy taking photos from the convent's view deck with the Cordillera Mountains as your background.

Formally known as the Our Lady of Atonement Cathedral, the Baguio Cathedral stands atop Mount Mary Hill, or what the Ibalois call "Kampo." 

The church is known for its Neo-Gothic style, as evidenced by its twin spires and its rose-colored exterior with stained-glass windows.

During World War II, it served as an evacuation center. Baguio Cathedral is also the largest Catholic church in the city. As it is built on top of a hill, it gives visitors an awe-inspiring bird' s-eye view of Session Road and the whole of Baguio. 

The Baguio Cathedral can be reached by climbing a 104-step staircase.

If you want to cut some time and effort, the road up the hill is accessible to cars. You can also climb the escalators of Porta Vaga Shopping Mall on Session Road and exit at the top floor, as it'll lead onto the church's parking grounds.

Bell Church was founded in 1960 by Ng Pee, a Chinese immigrant from the Canton Region. 

This Chinese temple is primarily influenced by Taoist architecture, but it also features a fusion of Buddhist symbols and follows ancient Chinese methods of construction.

Upon arriving at Bell Church, an ornate arch with dragon highlights and Chinese inscriptions will greet you. In front of the temple, you will find two octagonal lotus ponds that resemble a Bagua.

In Chinese culture, it represents the concept of rebirth and immortality. As you explore the church grounds, prepared to be entranced by the soaring pagodas, dragons, and lion statues, of course, the bells that decorate Bell Church.

Bell Church's pagodas feature images of saints and the Buddha. Past the opposing dragon figures, you will find a charming koi pond where you can make a wish.

You can go to the central patio of Bell Church to witness a panoramic view of the surrounding hills. 

Baguio is a melting pot of diverse Cordilleran culture. The Baguio Museum stands as a reminder of that and the city's storied past and rich cultural and historical heritage. 

The museum was built to resemble a traditional Ifugao home. It has wood and stone, and it features a pyramid roof that has two towering concrete poles at the stair entrance.

Baguio is part of Benguet Province and the greater Cordillera Region. The main floor of the building is dedicated to the craftsmanship of the provinces of the Cordillera region: Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Apayao, and Abra. 

You will find various tribal artifacts, native jewelry, apparel, fabrics, and musical instruments encased by protective glass panels.

If you're curious about what the lives of the indigenous Cordilleran tribes look like, the miniature dioramas in the museum will give you a picture.

Aside from the exhibits, the museum has educational clippings and photographs where you can learn more about the history of Baguio and the different tribes in Cordillera.

Baguio Museum also houses models of the different huts used by tribes in ancient times. Even more fascinating is the museum's collection of burial jars and carved wooden coffins, one of which contains a real mummified body!

As you can tell by now, Baguio is full of surprises. And as if the one discussed above is not enough, this perpetually cold city has one more natural attraction that will take you by surprise.   

16 kilometers northwest of Baguio lies the hot springs of Tuba, Benguet. Known as the Asin Hot Springs, these thermal and therapeutic springs are the perfect spot for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Because of its considerable distance from the city center, Asin Hot Springs is one of the most underrated destinations in the province of Benguet. 

Although the pools are tiled, the waters that fill them are natural and come straight from the mountains. The springs are even said to have healing properties.

For instance, the hotness of the water is known to soothe muscle pains, while the sulfuric water stimulates blood circulation and moisturizes the skin. Take a dip and feel your stress wash away.

Aside from the soothing thermal water, Asin Hot Spring offers visitors scenic mountain views and lush vegetation. There are also different facilities, such as pools for adults and children-friendly ones.

To complete your Baguio city culture and countryside tour, stop by the Easter Weaving Room. Established in 1909, Easter Weaving Room is as old as Baguio itself. 

It is also one of the few places in Baguio where you can witness authentic traditional weaving techniques practiced by the natives of the Cordillera Region. 

Easter Weaving Room has a work area where you can watch weavers do their magic on the looms with multi-colored threads. 

You also get to witness the intricacy of making the exquisite Montanosa cloth, which is a colorful hand-woven cloth unique to the Cordillera Region.

Aside from watching weavers work, you can also go around and check out the Easter Weaving Room's displays. 

You can also purchase those items, as well as baskets and wood carvings.

Compared to other woven products sold around Baguio, the quality of the items made in the Easter Weaving room is superior and, most of the time, even cheaper.

18. Stop by the Ifugao Woodcarver's Village

Another great spot to buy souvenirs in Baguio is the Ifugao Woodcarver's Village. 

Stretching for 3 kilometers long along Asin Road, the Woodcarver's Village is the largest concentration of veteran and budding local woodcarvers in Baguio. 

Here traditional crafts and skills of weaving and woodcarving that span back decades are practiced and passed on to the next generations. Ifugao woodcarvers are recognized as the best among Cordillera tribes in this art form.

The village is famous for its excellent quality wood carvings. From small critical chains to towering statues of Igorot tribesmen, you will be stunned by the variety of handmade crafts in the Ifugao Woodcarvers Village.

Woodcarver's village showcases the indigenous aesthetics of the region, its natural environment, and the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillerans through wood carving.

Subjects of the carved items are mostly associated with the Cordillera, the indigenous people, and animals. They are also commonly religious icons, household items, furniture, signs, and key chains.

The shanty-covered hills of La Trinidad used to be an eyesore in otherwise scenic countryside. 

Inspired by the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and the Gamcheon Cultural Village of South Korea, the local government sought to transform the bleak hillside communities of La Trinidad.

Today, the houses of Stonehill, Botiw-tiw, and Sadjap (StoBoSa) have become an expansive life-sized art piece collectively called the StoBoSa Hillside Homes Artwork. 

Also known as the Colors of StoBoSa, it comprises around 200 houses over an area of 18,000 square meters. If the sheer expanse of it is not enough to wow you, the vibrant hues of this massive art piece will.

Baguio City: Basic Information and Brief History

Baguio is a highly urbanized city located in the province of Benguet. It is also known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines due to its chilly year-round environment. The city sits 4810 feet (1466 meters) above sea level, and its location is conducive to cultivating different root crops and vegetables.

Baguio City is also abundant in history. During the American Colonial Period in the 1900s, the US Military used Baguio as a hill station. Daniel Burnham, an urban designer, plans the whole city’s distinct layout. Unfortunately, during World War II, the Japanese attacked Camp John Hay, turning the city into ruins.

Currently, Baguio City is one of the most famous tourist spots in the country. But, who could imagine this mountainous city has a lot of historical moments that shaped the Philippines today?

Baguio Travel Requirements 2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected tourism not just in the Philippines but also around the world. Tourism is one of the economic sources of Baguio City, dramatically influencing people’s livelihood. As the city tries its best to recover from the pandemic, the local government decided to lift some of its travel restrictions to accommodate more tourists around the world.

Before visiting Baguio City, you need to have the following:

• QR-Code Traveler’s Pass (QTP)
• Vaccine Card/Certificate

To generate a QTP needed for your travel, please follow these steps:

• Create a  Baguio Visita Account  at  http://visita.baguio.gov.ph/
• Click ‘Schedule a Visit.’
• Create and schedule your travel by filling out the fields of information given (travel details, accommodation, travel agent details, place of origin, transportation details, and vaccination category), then click the “PROCEED” button.

As per Baguio’s tourism office, registration through the Visita Website is still mandatory for non-residents and non-employees of Baguio City. Additionally, group registration is also available on the Visita Website. You can do that by doing the following:

• Inside your Visita Account, go to My Travels.
• Click the ‘Add a Companion’ button and type the details needed.

Baguio Itinerary 1 Day: Exploring East Side Only

This itinerary is suitable for a one-day tour. It is designed for travelers who plan to visit Baguio City as a side trip (for example, coming from Sagada ). It explores the city’s east side with a mix of chill and adventurous notes. The day will start at the stunning view of the Amburayan Valley in Mines View Park and ends in a relaxed way at Starbucks Camp John Hay.

Baguio Itinerary 2 Days 1 Night: Exploring Part of Baguio + La Trinidad and Tuba in Benguet

The 2 Days 1 Night Baguio Itinerary explores the tourist spots outside Baguio City with a combination of the previous example. The first day will start at the luscious  Strawberry Farm of La Trinidad in Benguet and follow a southward fashion. The second day will be similar to the Day Tour Itinerary Sample.

Baguio Itinerary 3 Days and 2 Nights: Exploring Baguio and Certain Parts of Benguet

This Itinerary explores the popular tourist spots and never-seen places in Baguio. The first day of this Baguio Itinerary will explore the outskirts of the city, specifically the elusive Café in the Sky. The rest of the days will combine the two previous itineraries.

As of September 7, 2023, Cafe in the Sky is closed to the public. We suggest being flexible in your itinerary and visiting other city breakfast cafes.

When is the best month to visit baguio city.

It is best to visit Baguio during December, January, and February. These periods are also the most congested since travelers all over the country want to experience a pleasant cool climate. Furthermore, Baguio City celebrates the Panagbenga Flower Festival annually in February .

Visiting Baguio City during March, April, and May is also good, but it will be slightly warmer than the previous months. Avoid visiting Baguio City from September to November due to heavy rains, and some major highways are impassable because of the increased risk of landslides.

Any additional travel tips in Baguio City?

• One important keyword:  Follow . Follow your itinerary, the city’s safety standards, and the travel and tour agency.
• Bring your jackets . The night is colder than you think, and wearing a jacket is an added layer of protection against the city’s cold climate.
• Always keep yourself hydrated . Baguio City is a high-altitude city, and you might experience altitude sickness if you explore the place on foot. Always bring a water bottle with you to avoid getting altitude sickness.
• Always bring a small bag . In traveling, you might bring a big 30L to 40L backpack full of clothes and things you need for the following days of your trip. Of course, you will not be getting your heavy bags with you during the tour. Keep your main bag in your hotel room or accommodation. Bringing a small bag helps explore the city without the excess weight.
• Reservations are king . It’s better to reserve things in advance before any trip or activity. Many travelers visit the city daily, and full accommodation is a common problem. Always book your accommodation in advance, it’s better this way than letting yourselves stay in the street braving the cold night.
• Have an open mind and be responsible . We are all visitors to this place; be sensitive and respect their culture, values, and norms. Avoid throwing trash and be responsible.

The last time we visited Cafe in the Sky was in 2017. We arrived at 5 AM and the cafe was already opened. I don’t know if it’s still the same today since that area is closed to the public. Only residents of Baguio City are allowed to enter the area.

Hi Carlo, Yes! The traffic is even worse during the holiday season. Most tourists keep their vehicles in their accommodation and ride a cab instead. Pero, it depends on the tourist attraction na pupuntahan ninyo. If you are planning to visit the most crowded places like (Wright Park, Mines View, Botanical Garden, and Session Road), I advise na mag-taxi na lang kayo. For places like BenCab and Strawberry Farm, you can bring your vehicle since medyo malayo na mga ito and baka mapa-mahal pa kayo if mag taxi kayo. Enjoy your upcoming vacation in Baguio!

Hi Key, I asked the staff from local Baguio Tourism Office and said that QTP is still required when visiting Baguio City. However, based on the experience of my fellow blogger on his recent trip, they are not implementing the QTP strictly anymore. To be safe, just apply for a QTP in case they look for it.

Baguio has always been one of the top destinations in the Philippines. Because of its chilly temperature, pine-dominated landscapes, and overall romantic atmosphere, this mountain city has attracted tourists especially in summer and the holidays like Christmas and New Year.

Although a highly urbanized city, Baguio retains its rustic charm in spots. From natural sites to modern ones, Baguio has something for each type of traveler and each age group. Moreover, the food culture and shopping districts have become attractions themselves.

Mirador Hill and Eco Park

JAPAN IN BAGUIO! Easily a highlight of our most recent trip, the Mirador Heritage and Eco-Spirituality Park is a rising tourist destination, boasting a combination of local and Japan-inspired attractions.

This 5-hectare property is scribbled with hiking trails leading to different sites including the Rock Gardens, the Pandemic Healing Memorial, the La Storta Garden, Ifugao Houses, and the Circular Seismic Chamber (closed when we visited). But perhaps the most popular is the iconic Mirador Peace Memorial, a red-painted torii gate atop the hill, overlooking the city and the surrounding hills. It is a favorite photo spot for many visitors.

Another crowd-drawer is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, perhaps named after the bamboo forest of Kyoto’s temple district. While the bamboo trunks are not as big or tall as those in the Japan site, it still makes for a refreshing resting and photo spot.

Aside from the park, Mirador Hill also harbors the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, Kapilya ni Hesus at Maria, Café Iñigo, and the Mirador Jesuit Villa Retreat House.

Igorot Stone Kingdom

Launched to the public in the second half of 2021, the Igorot Stone Kingdom is Baguio’s newest attraction. So new that construction of some parts were still ongoing when we visited. The park showcases both modern and traditional Igorot culture as well as the values of the Cordillera Region.

The whole area covers about 6,000 square meters and is dominated by two massive structures facing each other — a modern-day castle and an old-school stone wall. Made of hollow blocks and cement, the modern-day castle is etched with walkways, punctuated by statues, photo spots and viewing decks. It also crowned by a food court, serving mostly Pinoy snacks.

The stone wall, on the other hand, resembles the rice terraces that feature the rock-laying skills of the Igorot people. As you climb, you get to see the Fertility Stone Tower, the Temple of Kabunyan, Bangan’s Dome, the Tower of Gatan, the Face in the Rock, and many more.

Other attractions are the Igorot Gold Mine, the Wishing Well, and the Igorot Golden Bridge. Soon, the park will also have life-size statues of prominent Igorots.

Tam-awan Village

Just a stone’s throw from Igorot Stone Kingdom lies Tam-Awan Village , nicknamed Garden in the Sky . It was commissioned by the Chanum Foundation in 1998 in order to create a model village showcasing reconstructed traditional Cordillera houses and make them accessible to more people.

The village highlights the indigenous craftsmanship and aesthetics of the region and its local artists. From three huts transported from Ifugao, the village now has nine traditional houses — seven Ifugao huts and two Kalinga houses. These structures were reconstructed using mostly the original materials.

Diplomat Hotel

Officially named the Dominican Hill Retreat House but popularly referred to as the Diplomat Hotel , the 17-hectare property is sprawled atop the Dominican Hill. It was originally built as a retreat house for the Dominican priests and nuns in the first half of the 20th century until World War II, when the Japanese took over and turned it into a military garrison and war prison.

After restorations and remodeling, the Diplomat Hotel was launched and operated between the 1970s and the 1980s. Given its history, especially the atrocities of WWII, it gained notoriety for paranormal activities, consistently putting it on the list of most haunted places in the Philippines.

Today, the whole hill area is declared a heritage and historical site by the local government of Baguio and was named Dominican Heritage Hill and Nature Park. The property is undergoing rehabilitation and development for tourism and is open to photoshoots, filmmaking, wedding receptions, and other events and functions.

Bencab Museum, Tuba

Just a short drive from Baguio is the BenCab Museum in the town of Tuba. The private museum is founded and managed by the artist himself, Benedicto Reyes Cabrera (BenCab), a Philippine National Artist for Visual Arts.

The museum was launched to the public in February 2009 and showcases BenCab’s own masterpieces along with other works by other distinguished artists and emerging contemporary artists. Aside from promoting the arts, it also aims to highlight environmental conservation and cultural preservation of the Cordilleras heritage. The museum has a café, an organic farm, and a mini forest.

CAMP JOHN HAY Tourist Spots

Yellow trail.

The Yellow Trail , also called Forest Bathing Trail , meanders about 1.5 kilometers across the pine-covered Camp John Hay.

The walking path links Le Monet and Tree Top Adventure — the two jumping-off points. From the Tree Top Adventure, the trail goes further to Scout Hill, the final stop.

If you want to challenge yourself, take the uphill route that starts at Le Monet Hotel and ends at Scout Hill. If you just want to enjoy nature the easy way, take the reverse downhill route — starting at Scout Hill and ending at Le Monet Hotel.

The team took the easier path and thoroughly enjoyed basking in nature.

Tree Top Adventure

Are you an adrenaline junkie? Then Tree Top Adventure inside Camp John Hay is your playground! This adventure park offers thrilling activities that will make your heart race.

The most popular attractions are the Superman Ride (zipline), Canopy Ride, and Tree Drop (harnessed free fall). If you have companions that are not really into extreme activities, they can still use the consumable entrance fee of P100 for trekking or ride the cable cars/seats to a viewpoint. Each ride/attraction will incur additional payment, but the 100-peso entrance fee will be deducted since it’s consumable.

Also located within the perimeter of Camp John Hay and not far from Tree Top Adventure is the Bell House , named after General J Franklin Bell.

This former official holiday residence of the Commanding General of the Philippines has been converted into a museum. The well-preserved building reflects the American colonial architectural style. It features an amphitheater that also functions as a garden.

Cemetery of Negativism

Located on a hill’s slope between Bell House and Camp John Hay Picnic Area, the Cemetery of Negativism (also called the Lost Cemetery) was commissioned in the early 1980s by the base’s commanding general John Hightower.

But this cemetery is not the usual site for burying human bodies but rather a symbolic place for burying negativities. The tombstones were inscribed with witty and punny “eulogies” which may sometimes require a dash of sarcasm to understand.

One tombstone reads “Itz Not Possible”, conceived November 11, 1905 but “still not born”. Another one has “Know Dam Way” engraved on it, then below it, “Conceived New Years Eve 1910. Didn’t work out.”

Picnic at Camp John Hay

The cool temperature of Baguio makes outdoor activities like having a picnic with your friends or family attractive to visitors. Bring your own food and ready the things you will need for a fun bonding with your loved ones while admiring the natural scenery.

You can spread out a mat on a chosen spot or find a picnic table. Camp John Hay has a picnic spot dotted with picnic tables for rent. The rate is P200 for the first three hours and P300 if you go beyond that.

You can also do it at Burnham Park. Wherever you choose to do it, please don’t forget to clean up your mess after.

LA TRINIDAD Tourist Spots

La trinidad strawberry farm.

Situated about 30 minutes north of Baguio is the most popular Strawberry Farm in the area. It’s often associated with Baguio City but is actually part of La Trinidad .

Buying strawberries here will cost you P250-P300 per kilo. If you want to experience picking your own strawberries, which is the main draw of this place, you have to pay an additional P200. The strawberry-picking season is from November to May .

The farm also has a pasalubong center, composed of several souvenir stores. Don’t forget to try strawberry taho and strawberry ice cream ! Aside from strawberry products, the farm also offers fresh produce and plants.

The La Trinidad Strawberry Farm is managed and owned by Benguet State University.

Colors of StoBoSa, La Trinidad

The Colors of StoBoSa is another popular tourist attraction in La Trinidad. Officially named StoBoSa Hillside Homes Artwork , it was the brainchild of the DOT-CAR in collaboration with the Tam-Awan Village group which came up with several design proposals and over 500 residents/volunteers.

The vast mural encompasses the hillside houses of three sitios in Barangay Balili namely Stonehill, Botiwtiw, and Sadjap, hence the term “StoBoSa”. The Colors of StoBoSa was launched to the public in 2016.

Bell Church, La Trinidad

Also located in Barangay Balili near StoBoSa and the border of Baguio and La Trinidad, the Bell Church is a temple founded by Chinese immigrants from Canton (Guangzhou) in 1960.

The serene atmosphere and the view while strolling around the courtyard attract a lot of tourists to the temple, making it a major tourist destination. It also features a small lily pond.

The concept of night markets in the Philippines might not be as grand, but it is slowly weaving itself through the fabric of market consciousness.

Baguio is developing a strong night market culture, drawing tourists to the area along Harrison Road in the Central Business District. This is perfect for those who want to score bargain items or fill their tummies without digging deeper into their pockets.

Whether going here to shop or to eat, always keep an eye on your belongings.

Burnham Park

Located at the heart of Baguio, Burnham Park is the most famous attraction in the city. It is dominated by Burnham Lake (or Lagoon) and dotted with other interesting spots like the Rose Garden , a recreational park with a skating rink, the Orchidarium, the Children’s Park, and the Melvin Jones Grandstand.

The park is bustling with lots of fun activities such as renting paddle boats (swan boats), biking, and go-karting. If you get hungry while enjoying the activities around the park or if you just want to go food tripping in the area, food stalls and street food vendors abound so you and your tummy are pretty much covered.

Baguio Museum

Just a short walk from Burnham Park stands the Baguio Museum . It is not hard to find as it’s surrounded by prominent landmarks like the University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, Baguio City National High School, and SM Baguio.

The museum’s collections tell the history of the city and showcase the culture of the Cordillera region. The four floors host all the collections classified into categories — Baguio Gallery, Cordillera Gallery, and the Alternative Gallery.

The building also has a training floor and a multi-purpose hall. The museum started rehabilitation and renovation in 2017 and is targeted to finish in 2020.

Baguio Cathedral

Baguio Cathedral , officially named Our Lady of the Atonement Cathedral , is a hilltop cathedral overlooking Session Road and the busy downtown streets. It was launched in 1936 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

It follows a neo-Romanesque architectural style that features twin belfries/spires, a rose window (facade), and stained glass windows. It is one of the prominent landmarks in Baguio and is located beside Saint Louis University.

To access it from Session Road, visitors have to climb several steps, leading to the courtyard and the cathedral. Alternatively, you can go to Porta Vaga Shopping Mall and use the escalator leading to the cathedral’s courtyard.

Ukay-Ukay Stores

Baguio won’t be Baguio without “SM” — Segunda Mano stores. These second-hand stores, locally called wagwagan but popularly called by tourists ukay-ukay , littered the busy streets and corners of downtown Baguio. Tourists will find themselves easily getting lost in the mountains of options for pre-loved items. The pieces vary — clothing, bags, shoes, belts, scarves, and others.

Honestly, the wide range of choices can get really overwhelming. But if you have the patience and the stamina (haha), you might dig up some vintage and rare items. The popular ukay-ukay areas are Skyworld (Session Road), Hilltop (at the back of Baguio City Market), and Bayanihan (near Burnham Park). You’ll also find some, well, good finds, at the night market!

Session Road Nightlife

One of the city’s major arteries, Session Road is the most famous street in Baguio. It is abuzz with locals and tourists going about their business during the day, but it becomes livelier at night as bars and hangout places pulsate with good music and great conversations.

If you want to have dinner first before losing yourself in music and booze with friends and maybe new acquaintances, Session Road hosts numerous international restaurants and fast-food restaurants.

But if you want to try the local offerings, it is also home to several homegrown restaurants including Sizzling Plate, Ocha Asian Restaurant, Vizco’s Restaurant, Volante, Oh My Gulay, and Drop Out, among others.

Baguio Public Market

For pasalubong, make your way to the Baguio Public Market, which houses countless stalls selling products that are synonymous with the region — fresh strawberries and Sagada oranges, strawberry and ube jams, peanut brittle, fresh vegetables, and souvenirs!

And of course, grab a walis tambo!

There’s something about Baguio’s walis tambo that makes it consistently land in the top items of pasalubong from the city. For some reason, my mom and aunts never fail to buy one when we’re in Baguio or request it from loved ones visiting Baguio. I asked my mom about it and she casually told me that the walis tambo from Baguio is sturdier and thicker.

LEONARD WOOD & MINES VIEW Tourist Spots

In this section are attractions situated northwest of the city center, usually reached by taking the Leonard Wood Road.

Baguio Botanical Garden

One of the many green spaces in the city, the Baguio Botanical Garden (renamed Centennial Park) is located between Wright Park and Teacher’s Camp, along Leonard Wood Road.

This is another popular attraction in the city where visitors can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the verdant surroundings. The extensive garden park is just a short drive from Baguio’s Central Business District. It has many walking paths where you can see many photo-worthy spots. It also harbors the Baguio Arts Guild and the Igorot Village.

Wright Park

Another vast greenery is the Wright Park , named after the former Governor-General Luke Edward Wright.

This is a favorite leisure spot for both locals and tourists. It’s a lush park that offers walking and jogging trails, biking paths, and rest spots. It features a long pond or pool that almost covers the whole stretch of concrete path linking the Wright Park Kiosk and The Mansion facade. It also has a pine tree-covered forest hill adjacent to the horse stable.

If you want to go horseback riding in Baguio, Wright Park provides quite a number of horses to choose from, plus it’s not too far from the city center.

The Mansion

Wright Park’s long concrete path with a pool leads to the gate of the Mansion House , popularly referred to as The Mansion. It was commissioned in 1908 to serve as the official residence of the US Governor-General in the Philippines. It underwent reconstruction in 1947 after sustaining huge damage during the Second World War.

Presently, it functions as the official summer palace of the President of the Philippines. It is also the site for other important state functions and international gatherings.

Address: The Mansion, Baguio-Bua-Itogon Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 24/7 (Mansion Gate). Most of the time, the Mansion is closed to the public, so visitors can only get a glimpse of the actual mansion from the entrance gate.

Mines View Park

Usually crowded with hordes of tourists, Mines View Park is definitely one of the most popular tourist spots. My local friends say that this is more like a tourist trap, but we’re tourists so go check it out still and see why it’s popular in the first place.

It features an observation deck that presents a panoramic view of the former gold and copper mines of Itogon town below and the mountains beyond. This is also one of the best spots for sunrise watching.

If you want to avoid the crowd, go there early in the morning. The place is peppered with numerous shops, stalls, and peddlers selling souvenir items, clothes, trinkets, food, and even plants! The entrance to the park is located along Gibraltar Road.

Plant sellers also abound in the area. Baguio’s chilly atmosphere makes it favorable for growing plants — flowering, herbs, and ornamental. The wide range of choices will make veteran and newbie plantitos and plantitas go gaga over these bloom and foliage babies.

Good Shepherd Products

Not far from Mines View Park is a place where you can get the famous ube jam . It’s a quintessential pasalubong stop in Baguio where tourists willingly wait in line for the signature ube jam and other favorite products.

What makes buying from Good Shepherd special and fulfilling is its advocacy. Good Shepherd has built a good reputation for producing quality products for a cause. So where does your money go? Check the packaging (usually printed on the lid): “You help send us to college each time you buy our products”. The proceeds will be used to help send the Cordillera youth to college.

Other products are strawberry jam (seasonal), blueberry jam (seasonal), peanut cluster, cashew brittle, lengua , snowballs, angel cookies, choco flakes, alfajor cookies, banana chips, sampaloc candy, and more. There’s a strict ordering system — write down your orders first, queue, and hand over your order and payment to the attendant.

Also, don’t forget to try some of their Take Out Products which are basically snack/merienda items. Note that the lines can get too long during the peak season and there is an order limit per person. When they products are sold out, they close the site (like during our last visit).

CULINARY ATTRACTIONS

Baguio takes pride in its robust local culinary scene. Making the most of the abundance of ingredients, the locals came up with lots of innovative ways to create dishes and food products that embody the Cordillera region and neighboring Ilocos region, whose influence also seeps into the city.

Many of these dishes are available at various restaurants and eateries around Baguio. Some of the most well-known are pinikpikan (chicken soup), pinuneg (blood sausage) and kinuday (smoked meat), as well as dinakdakan (boiled, sliced and grilled pig’s head parts) and bagnet (deep-fried pork).

But if you want to sample a lot of delicacies at once, head over to The Farmer’s Daughter Restaurant , situated just next to Tam-awan Village. They serve mostly Cordilleran and Ilocano fare, prepared traditionally.

If you prefer a more modern twist, Cafe by the Ruins is an established name in the city’s food scene.

Local restaurants also add their Baguio twist to other Pinoy favorites. Mines View Park Hotel’s ZENZ Bar and Restaurant serves strawberry sinigang and strawberry adobo.

You can also go food tripping at the night market, Burnham Park, Ili-Likha, Good Shepherds, and Session Road, just to name a few.

Oh My Gulay Artist Cafe

You might be thinking, Oh My Gulay is a local restaurant. Why does it have its own entry? Well, if you’ve been to this art cafe, you know it deserves its own spot!

Nestled on the top floor of an old building along Session Road, I was not expecting anything for that day’s lunch stop. And to be honest, I was not too excited at first because I’m not really into vegetables. But when I took the last flight of stairs, boy was I blown away by the quirky interiors and decorations! It was like being transported into a secret, mystical world. And the indoor garden setting has its own small pond, too!

The restaurant has two-level dining areas. The upper level has two separate sections connected by a short wooden hanging bridge. The lower-level dining area has indoor seatings as well as veranda seatings with a view of the city. A collaboration of Oh My Gulay and Vocas, the place also features exhibit areas for local artists. As the name of the restaurant suggests, it serves affordable vegetarian and vegan meals.

Ili-Likha Artist’s Wateringhole

Lying along Assumption Road is the very peculiar Ili-Likha Artist’s Wateringhole , also known as Ili-Likha Artist Village . It was built by artist and filmmaker Eric de Guia (Kidlat Tahimik), who transformed a vacant lot into this whimsical treehouse-themed food park in 2014.

The place highlights the importance of preserving nature and culture through arts and food. It is an evolving work of art with several interesting corners and iconic features like the mosaic-covered staircase.

The homegrown restaurants serve healthy, preservative-free, and organic food. Some of the restaurants are Balbacua, Leandro’s Bistro, Yomichee, Ibana, Little Milkyway Vegan Café, Oh My Gulay, Café Cueva, Kape Kullaaw, Waynu, Scout Burrows, and Natengan Ed Ili.

It also houses arts and crafts shops and hosts different events and workshops. The whole place is photo-worthy and visitors will enjoy the relaxing and creative atmosphere.

Baguio Craft Brewery and Craft 1945

Enough about food! How about some drinks? And by drinks, we mean beer!

If you are the type who likes hunting for local craft beers or you just want to have a chill dinner-and-beer type of night in Baguio, there are good watering holes in the city where you can quench your thirst for beer.

Baguio Craft Brewery is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. It offers a wide selection of craft beers, including its signature craft beers named after Ifugao’s mythic characters.

Craft 1945 , partly managed by Baguio Craft Brewery, is a Spanish-themed restaurant serving premium craft beers, tapas and other Spanish dishes.

Benguet Coffee

Coffee is everywhere in Baguio, and it’s not hard to score Benguet coffee when in town. The city’s high altitude and cooler temperature make it one of the best places in the Philippines to grow coffee.

You can actually buy some at the public market or at cafés like Kape Umali , which is also the biggest coffee supplier in the province and other parts of northern Luzon. The café serves traditional brews as well as specialty brews like liquor coffee and gourmet coffee. Enjoy the music and appreciate artworks at the cafe’s gallery too! The three branches are located in Shangri-la Village, Mine’s View, and Baguio Market.

Ube and Strawberry Taho

Don’t you dare get out of Baguio without trying strawberry taho . They are everywhere, especially in the vicinity of popular tourist spots including Burnham Park, Session Road, and Mines View Park to name a few.

Taho is a distinct Filipino snack made of silken soybean curd (tofu), brown sugar syrup, and tapioca (sago pearls). It’s traditionally served or peddled in the morning but nowadays, it can be consumed any time of the day, depending on availability.

Since strawberries are plenty in Baguio, the locals made their own version by replacing brown sugar syrup with strawberry syrup. And boy did they own it!

If you feel like you’ve had enough of strawberries, ube taho is also available.

Strawberry Ice Cream

Still on the topic of putting a twist on regular snacks, the locals are really making the most of their strawberries by coming up with their own strawberry-flavored ice cream. Fine, strawberry ice cream is not new to the market BUT the ones in Baguio taste different. And we mean in a good way.

For us, the best that we’ve tried are those sold at La Trinidad Strawberry Farm. But if you are pressed for time, you can easily find it in downtown Baguio.

Is Baguio Worth Visiting? 5 Reasons to Visit Baguio (the Philippines)

What’s the first image that comes to your mind when I mention the Philippines?

If you love to travel like me, I’m sure you think of paradise beaches, islands, and busy cities.. perhaps also lakes or lagoons that Palawan is famous for.

But did you think of mountains? I think not. In that case, let me introduce the city that’s often called the summer capital of the Philippines – Baguio.

Look for Baguio tour packages or opt for a DIY trip, whatever you decide one thing is for sure – you will have a very good time in this hilly travel destination in the Philippines.

What is Baguio all about & Where is it?

Baguio is 4,810 feet (1,470 meters) above sea level and it has mountains. This lovely city is situated on the Cordillera mountain range on the island of Luzon. It is a part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network  for crafts and folk art.

Baguio is also called “the City of Pines” and it is in Luzon tropical pine forests ecoregion. So, expect to see a very different landscape here than what you expect from the Philippines. (For beaches, check out my post about Palawan and Panglao island .)

Baguio is inside the Province of Benguet. This province produces a lot of vegetables and which is why it is often called the Salad Bowl of the Philippines.

So the question remains, is Baguio worth visiting? Let me share a few reasons why you should consider traveling to the summer capital of the Philippines.

Cordillera Mountains

The biggest reason to visit Baguio is to see the beauty of the Cordillera Range, which is the highest mountain range in the Philippines. The city is built on hilly terrain, so the result is pretty!

Baguio City is highly urbanized but serves as a good base for exploring the nearby mountain areas of Benguet. Because of that, the temperature here is low and gives a much-needed respite in the summer months. 

One of the notable places in Baguio for enjoying the view of the mountains is  Mines View Park . This park is located a little outside Baguio city but the view is worth every bit of effort. Another place to see a good view is the top deck of  SM Mall .

Hike to Mount Pulag in Benguet

Mount Pulag is famous for its otherworldly scenery, especially the “sea of clouds”. Astrophotographers also love coming here because of the exceptionally clear view of the Milky Way Galaxy.

To reach Mount Pulag, drive to  Babalak Ranger station  to start hiking. The drive from Baguio to Baba Lak Range station is around 2-3 hours.

The hiking trails are managed by the Mount Pulag National Park and there are campsites too. Wear enough warm clothes because it does get chilly here.

Strawberry Picking in La Trinidad

One of the most interesting things that you can do in Baguio is go to a strawberry farm and pick your strawberries. The best strawberry picking season is March to April, but it is always a good idea to check in advance.

To visit the strawberry farms, you need to drive to La Trinidad, which is 20 minute drive away from Baguio. Family travelers note this point because children love things like these!

Baguio Flower Festival – Panagbenga

A big reason for visiting Baguio is to experience Panagbenga, the Baguio Flower Festival which occurs in February. The festival lasts for over a month, so are you thinking of Valentine’s Day?

Expect to see flower exhibits, parades, floral floats, kite flying, street dance – and just a lot of blooms around you. This is something that you can experience with your family, your partner, or also a group of friends.

Burnham Park Lake

Burnham Lake may not be the prettiest one in the Philippines, like the ones in  Palawan  but you can enjoy the by getting on a boat. The park was located by the American architect Daniel Burnham, who was also the city planner for Baguio.

Burnham Lake was once called the City Pond and it is a man-made lake. You can rent a boat from here very easy to spend a few leisurely hours boating.

Baguio is Famous for Handicrafts

The most famous handicrafts of Baguio are woodcarving, silver craft, weaving, and tattooing. Walk around in Baguio’s city market where you will get everything and get an opportunity to interact with the locals.

Relaxed Vibe

Maybe it is the mountains, flowers, the spas, or the fresh produce, but Baguio is known for its relaxed vibe. You will notice how the mood is different than many other touristy places all over the Philippines.

Baguio City Tourist Spots: A Showcase Of The City’s Art

When I was in Baguio Museum, I read an article written by some writer whose name I could not recall, describing Baguio as a “Melting Pot”. Based on Wikipedia’s definition, a  melting pot  is a metaphor for a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous, the different elements “melting together” into a harmonious whole with a common culture. To me that absolutely made sense. That’s exactly what Baguio is. The assimilation of various people with different cultures all drawn together in harmonious coalescence.  Baguio City is the kind of place which I easily fell in love with. Primarily, what separates it from other cities in the Philippines is its cool weather and its pine-scented air. Aside from that, there are a whole lot of other reasons why the city is so endearing. Themed Parks are everywhere. The people are so warm. The culture is artful and lovely. It’s like an entirely different world. It’s beautiful and it’s something I couldn’t get enough with. So when in the City Of Pines, don’t miss seeing these Baguio Tourist Spots.

1.   Burnham Park

Burnham Park is located within the heart of the city. It’s probably the city’s prime tourists spot. Here we enjoyed rowing our boat in Burnham lake, played chess with the locals, interacted with the people enjoying their early morning exercises, went biking and had our first taste of strawberry taho.

 2. Orchidarium

If what you seek are different kinds of plants from the flowery ones the likes of chrysanthemums, daisies, lilies and roses to herbs like thyme, rosemary, parsley and cilantro to the green leafy decorative ones like peperomia, coleus, and miura sold in a very affordable prices, then this is the perfect place for you.

3. Baguio Cathedral

Built in the 1920, this great piece of architecture with its pink exterior, stained glass and massive twin spires was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary hence the name Our Lady Of Atonement Cathedral. Located adjacent to Session Road, this is one of Baguio’s major tourist spots.

4. Mines View Park

Nowadays, Mines View Park is a place more famous for memorabilia and souvenir shops rather than where it was name after. This place gives a perfect view of the old gold and copper mines of the Ibaloi tribe.

 5. Wright Park

Here found the much photographed Pool Of Pines, a rectangular pool of water surrounded by flowers and pine trees but it’s more famous to locals and tourists alike as the place where you can ride horses with over a hundred of them to choose from. You can also have a photo taken unlimited wearing native costumes for the price of 20 pesos per person.

6. The Mansion

Located across the Wright Park, the Mansion is the official summer residence of the President of the Philippines. It’s pretty small as compared to the Malacanang Palace, but it doesn’t seem any less elegant with its white edifice fronted by a beautiful gate which would definitely grab your attention.

7. Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden is one of Baguio’s scenic parks which features a wide array of plants but what we love more about it is here, we got the chance to interact with friendly natives who were also ready to playfully pose for the camera.

 8. Teacher’s Camp

Declared in April 2008 as a National Heritage Site, Teachers Camp has been home during summer to teachers from all parts of the country  for recreational and educational purposes. Within the camp are classrooms, dormitories dining and conference halls. It also has an athletic ovals which locals can use for a minimal cost.

9. Camp John Hay

Camp John Hay is what made Baguio the “Little America”. During most of the 20th century, it was used as the recreational facility for the U.S. Armed Forces. Although many parts of the camp has been changed when it was converted into a privately owned resort, it is still famous to tourists for the history the Americans left within it. Among these are the  Bell House & Bell Amphitheater  which are the works of art of the late Governor-General James Franklin Bell. The  Secret Garden  which was JF Bell’s personal space is now famous as the place perfect for wedding proposals. Here also found the well visited  Butterfly Sanctuary  which houses over 50 different species of butterflies. If what you look for is extreme adventure, you might wanna opt for the extreme paintball center and the treetop adventure.

10. Panagbenga Park

Panagbenga Park is a small park situated along two intersecting roads one of which is the Loakan Rd. This is just another typical park in Baguio City with potted plants, mini butterfly sanctuary and a bird cage which houses rare bird species but what I loved about it is here sold at Saleng Garden, a mini bar within the park is the delicious refillable cup of coffee and lemon grass tea which is only for 30 pesos.

11. Baguio Museum

Here displayed are artifacts and works of art of the native tribes of the Cordillera region namely the Ifugaos, Igorots, Ibalois, Kankanaeys and many others. They convey the early lifestyles of each tribe before the American colonization. It also depicts a brief history of the city displaying photos of its political leaders and replicas of Baguio during its early years up to the most recent in 2009.

12. PMA (Philippine Military Academy)

Located within Fort Del Pilar, PMA serves as the training ground for future officers of the AFP.

13. Tam-awan Village

Tam-awan Village was built to restore the Ifugao and Kalinga villages in Baguio City to give those people who haven’t been to the Cordilleras the experience of living immersed through the cultures of these natives. It has become an artists village as it is host to several art exhibits for artists from all over the city and beyond. It has an art gallery which houses paintings and other art pieces.

14. Chinese Bell Church

Bell church is a beautiful place of worship. The structures of the buildings are of classic Chinese architecture. There is an intricately landscaped garden going up the hill. If you want solitude and a place where there are less crowd of people around,  then you would love to pay the Bell Church a visit.

15. Lourdes Grotto

Constructed in commemoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this shrine is another place of meditation located in the western part of Baguio. The main altar is located at the top of the hill which can be accessed by climbing a stair consisting of 252 steps. Here you can offer flowers, light candles and lift your prayers asking for the Virgin Mother’s intercession.

16. Dominican Hill

After paying Lourdes Grotto a visit, this is another place you would wanna set your eyes on. Found in Dominican Hill are the  Diplomat Hotel Ruins  which is an old abandoned building used to be a first class hotel in the city and the  World’s Largest 10 Commandments  plus a panoramic view of the entire Baguio City.

17. Kennon Road

This is the shortest route to Baguio City for travelers coming from Manila. Although, it has made headlines due to many vehicular accidents, it still is a favorite route going to the city as it offers breathtaking views along the way. Also along Kennon Rd., is the famous tourist attraction, the 43-feet high limestone sculpted  Lion’s Head.  The viewing deck at the upper end of Kennon Rd is the one famous to tourists for its spectacular view of the entire stretch of the highway and the surrounding mountains covered in greens.

18. Strawberry Farm

Located in La Trinidad, a nearby town in the outskirts of Baguio City are the vast strawberry farms. Here you can choose the type of strawberries you want from small to big ones or from half ripened to the fully ripened ones as you are picking them yourselves. Be careful though not to be too excited to pick every strawberry you see as the cost is triple times higher than the price of strawberries sold in the market, but getting to pick your own strawberries which you can bring home to families and friends with a touch of love is priceless.

19. BenCab Museum

BenCab Museum houses one of the massive collections of art pieces like paintings and sculptures of BenCab himself and other noteworthy artists. It also has a cafe that serves delicious pastries and coffee and a garden with a pond of koi.

20. Northern Blossoms

Although not really located within the City of Pines, Northern Blossoms still makes a perfect side trip whenever you will drive up north. This beautiful Flower Farm in Atok boasts of sprawling hills filled with flowers of various colors, sizes and species.

Baguio City continues to attract tourists from all over the Philippines and even abroad. Well, they have a pretty good reason to be. We were there, for the first time, last January 20, 2014 when the temperature dropped a record-breaking 5.1 degrees. Normally with that kind of temperature, I would see myself rolled into a ball covered in thick sheets. Instead, I was out witnessing people of the city go by their normal routines. The nightlife also in the city is very colorful and lively which would invite you not to go on sleeping until the break of dawn. A night market fills the entire stretch of Harrison Blvd every night where fine pieces of pre-loved clothes, shoes, bags and accessories are sold at affordable prices. Nowadays, I make it a point to visit once or twice a year just to see how much the city has changed and to try whatever new I can find.

Now that school is back in session (for some, at least), we are hoping to see more wiggle room when it comes to vacation destinations. One of the most popular has go to be Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines, and an all-time favorite place to go to for the cool breeze and scenery. Whether you want to admit it or not, no matter how many times you’ve been to Baguio, the place never ceases to amaze you and make you feel like you don’t want to go back home to Manila. While changes and development taking place (read: SM Baguio and Camp John Hay Ayala Tech Hub) are happening at lightning speed, there are still enough reasons why people still keep going back to Baguio. We’ve listed some of them for you:

1. The people are courteous and naturally nice.

There’s just something about the people who live in Baguio. They’re naturally kind, warm and accommodating. The cab drivers are pleasant and won’t deny you a ride no matter what the traffic situation is or where you’re headed within the city. The ambiance is generally friendly and cheerful wherever you go in Baguio.

2.  The scenery is just plain pretty all year round.

Baguio is blessed to have some of the most amazing and breathtaking spots that can be found in the country. Add to that the abundance of flowers that make the City of Pines colorful and lovely wherever you go. Baguio boasts flowers blooming throughout the year because of its great weather. Take the opportunity to literally stop and smell the flowers because you won’t get to do that the moment you return to Manila. If you want to see lush greenery and abundant flowers in full bloom, try visiting during the months of January-February. Wherever it is you go in Baguio, you know it’s a photo op waiting to happen.

3. The old blends with the new.

No matter the vast amount of development currently happening to Baguio, there still remains that quaint vibe it exudes from way back, especially when you see the places or tourist spots you grew up visiting. Some of these local spots are Cafe by the Ruins, Casa Vallejo, Hillstation, and Cam John Hay. There is comfort in knowing that despite the rapid infrastructure development in the city, there are still enough places in Baguio you can check out for a visit and find them just the way they were when last you were here while you enjoy a hot cup of choco. Now, that’s what we call a #PerfectVacay.

4. It’s the perfect place for those who just want to relax.

For families and friends who would rather spend several days relaxing in cool weather instead of lounging by the beach, Baguio is always the first choice of destination. There’s still so much to do in the city even if you’ve been around it several times already. You might even find yourself wanting to stay an extra day simply because you want to do more things.

5. It’s a great place to grab some grub.

If you haven’t been to Baguio for a long time and find yourself visiting again this summer, you know that you can still count on your favorite dishes from Cafe by the Ruins or the steaming cup of hot choco from Choco-late de Batirol or the chunky ube that PNKY Home Bed and Breakfast serves that seems to get better with time. Your cravings will surely be satisfied because you know that the food is still the way you like it.

Whether you’re going to Baguio City for a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of Manila or just want to take a retreat, don’t forget to enjoy the experience and cherish the time well spent with family and friends!

The cool weather, pine-scented atmosphere, awe-inspiring scenery, and tranquil ambiance are few of the reasons why it is a perfect getaway to escape the summer heat, a haven to embark a soul-searching journey, a breakout to mend a broken heart, and a venue to feel invigorated and relax.

With various food kiosk around the park, all you need to do is roll out your mat and enjoy bonding with your friends or family. Found in the premises of the park are the Rose Garden and Orchidarium where you can discover various plants, trees, and flowers. 2. Baguio City Public Market

Baguio City Public Market has a great assortment of pasalubongs and souvenirs. There are fresh food products like fruits, vegetables, and Benguet coffee beans, processed goods like Baguio’s sausages, strawberry jam, lengua de gato and sundot kulangot, native handicrafts like baskets, bags, and brooms and clothes perfect for cold weather.

3. Souvenirs at Mines View Park

After your visit at the Mines View Park observatory deck, bring with you some souvenirs from the local. They sold beautifully handcrafted local products like wood carvings, basket, and fan. There are also plants and flowers sold in the area.
