University of Miami

The University’s Coral Gables campus is located on a 239-acre tract in Coral Gables, Florida and is one of South Florida’s prime destinations for a rich variety of arts and culture offerings.

While on campus, interns have the pleasure of strolling our   walkable campus , which was designed to emulate a botanical garden. With no city streets or busy roadways cutting through our campus, the University of Miami offers a safe pedestrian experience. With the longest walk lasting no longer than 15 minutes, interns can explore all that campus has to offer.

To complement the balmy weather and beautiful Florida sunshine on your walk, the campus enjoys a number of important vegetated areas including   Lake Osceola , the   John C. Gifford Arboretum , the   Ibis Natural Trail,   and numerous  Palmetums . These features only add to the walkability of our campus.

Interns also have the opportunity to visit the award-winning   Lowe Art Museum  or even grab a workout at the   Patti & Allan Herbert Wellness Center .

Located in Coral Gables, a beautifully lush city in sunny South Florida, the University of Miami is just seven miles from downtown Miami and offers interns the ability to explore the many culturally diverse neighborhoods of the region.

Take a Virtual Campus Tour

Located in the Miami-Dade metropolitan area, the University of Miami offers interns seemingly limitless possibilities to travel to and from the campus as well as around town after their conference schedule is over.

Local Airports

A drive to campus from   Miami International Airport (MIA)   – which serves all major airlines – takes just 20 minutes by car. The   Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL)   is no more than 45 minutes away, and   Palm Beach International Airport (PBI)   is just a 90-minute drive by car.

Public Transportation

If traveling by car is not an option, Miami-Dade’s public transportation system connects the University to both MIA, FLL and PBI airports. A quick ride on the   Miami-Dade MetroRail   system provides a direct route from MIA to a station located at the University of Miami’s campus. Additionally, riders can connect to the city’s   TriRail   system to travel via rail from campus to FLL and PBI. The MetroRail and   Metrobus   services also provide local routes throughout Miami-Dade County, including many stops near the University campus.

Campus Parking

Interns are provided with a complimentary campus parking pass for one vehicle during their stay in our Summer Intern Housing Program.

Coral Gables

Integral to the city’s founding, the University of Miami is located in   Coral Gables   – known as “The City Beautiful” by its residents – in sunny South Florida. One of the first planned cities in the region, Coral Gables offers interns a variety of cultural, historical and entertaining activities.

From the centrally located   Miracle Mile   shopping district and many other upscale dining and shopping centers to the historic   Biltmore Hotel   or   Venetian Pool , Coral Gables alone provides enough activities for conference guests both young and old to have a well-rounded conference experience.

Cultural Neighborhoods

Coconut Grove   is a short 15-minute drive from campus but feels as though you’ve transported to a tiny city reminiscent of Key West. With block after block of local eateries and artisan shops in addition to the   Vizcaya Museum and Gardens   or   Barnacle Historical State Park , Coconut Grove provides visitors with activities both day and night.

Moving slightly further away from campus but no more than a quick drive by car or public transit, lies many cultural neighborhoods that makeup the diverse city of Miami.   Little Havana’s “Calle Ocho”   hosts many street festivals and other cultural events – including frequent games of dominoes. Little Havana is also home to   Marlins Park   for when the local Miami Marlins are in town.

Interns also have the option of traveling north from campus and visiting Miami’s city-center – known as   Downtown Miami   – to visit   Bayside , a waterfront shopping and dining venue where visitors can also book a dinner cruise in   Biscayne Bay . The   Perez Art Museum Miami   and the   Frost Science Museum   are centrally located in Downtown Miami and offer visitors a way to beat the heat while discovering many exciting topics of art, history, culture and science.

Brickell , located just 20 minutes north of campus, comes alive at night with a variety of restaurants and other nightlife venues.

Who could come to Miami and not want to get a taste of South Beach? With its historic art deco architecture and infamous restaurants and hotels, “SoBe” is a must-see locale for any visitors.

But for those looking for a quieter day at the beach, a quick drive to   Key Biscayne   offers conference guests the ability to unwind after a busy conference agenda. There, visitors can spend a day at the Miami Seaquarium or rent a bike and explore   Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park .

A 90-minute drive to the   Florida Keys   is also the perfect getaway after any meeting or conference is over. There, visitors can snorkel in the clear waters, take a kayak or paddle board through the mangroves or dine at one of the many waterside restaurants.

In one of El Rincon Asturiano’s four small dining rooms there’s a chair with the words “Pedro Almodovar” scribbled on the back, next to one that says “Lorca.” But you don’t have to be a famous Spaniard to eat here. You just have to love traditional Spanish tapas like gambas al ajillo, chorizo a la sidra, or huevos estrellados. There's nothing new or flashy about this Little Havana spot. It's probably where your friend’s Ciudadrealeño dad hangs out to drink Albariño and split a big bowl of almejas con jamon with his friends. He’s most likely been coming here since it opened in 1995 and hopes to one day have a chair with his name on it.

Shiels: For a traveler, 'home' is hotels, shuttle busses and airplanes

Delta Captain Mark Eppler with grateful passenger Michael Patrick Shiels on a flight to Miami.

My cross-country flight from Miami was comfortable but not memorable, which is the best you can hope for in air travel. Disembarking was remarkable, though, because two Delta representatives wearing neckties came aboard to announce our pilot had won a “Chairman’s Club Award” from the airline. This gave the passengers an opportunity to congratulate captain Mark Eppler as they passed the very tall, humble fellow standing at the cockpit door as they exited the aircraft. I was pleased to tip my cap to the captain.

“We do not get much chance to speak with the pilots, but I want you to know how much I appreciate your capability and courage,” I told Eppler. “I never take for granted the ability to be flown anywhere I want, any time, safely. It is a modern miracle. And you sound so calm and matter of fact when you make your in-flight announcements!”

Eppler’s smile was gracious.

“That is due to 35 years of flying Delta jets and five years in the military before that,” Eppler said with a shrug. He admitted that in most industries customers are more likely to complain than to compliment. “But I try to verbalize and show appreciation to people in restaurants or hotels or shops anywhere I travel. And to our passengers.”

Eppler’s co-pilot, standing next to him, was listening closely. He had two years under his belt flying with Delta.

“It is like you are learning alongside ‘Captain Sullenberger,’” I suggested.

New dogs can learn old tricks, as I experienced on a Delta flight a week later when the liftoff for our one-hour, early Saturday morning flight to Las Vegas was delayed five hours. The younger captain, once everyone was seated, came out of the cockpit to take the microphone, and explain the maintenance situation.

“I’d like to tell you once we land, we are rewarding your patience by sending you to a complimentary gourmet lunch at Bouchon, but we did give you a $12 airport food credit, which, by the way, is two-dollars more than Delta provides us,” the captain claimed. “I also figure the least we can do is open the bar with complimentary drinks during the flight.”

I encountered other tourism industry professionals who, like Eppler, were intent on spreading joy earlier that day at the Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon Hotel, which is better described as a plane-side, waterfront resort.

“I’m still throwing some sunshine your way,” said front desk clerk Trassa, flicking her hand as if she were shooting sparkles. Trassa’s nickname is, therefore, “Sunshine,” and despite the fact she was finishing her overnight shift in the pre-dawn hours, she was ebullient when she stated, “I am just so happy working here.”

I am always happy to overnight at the Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon which, for me, has crossed over from being a hotel to becoming a “home-tell.” While the idea of an airport hotel might sound like a transitory proposition, the Hilton Blue Lagoon has become a base camp for my adventures - whether they be in South America or South Beach. The Hilton provokes a Pavlovian response before the excitement of even seeing soccer star Lionel Messi play an Inter Miami game nearby or a dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab.

“Welcome back, amigo,” said Josue, the friendly Cuban fellow who drives one of the Hilton’s two, constantly looping, complimentary airport shuttles. Josue also assured me he would save a seat on the shuttle leaving at the proper time in case I happened to linger at the Hilton’s lagoon-front pool and tiki bar a little longer.

He tolerated my attempts to speak Spanish, and told me, in English, of his former life in Cuba as he drove me to the airport for my flight to Havana…and back when I returned. The Hilton’s General Manager, Jean Armas, welcomed me back from Cuba and to the hotel. He’d arranged for a plate of traditional empanadas and some locally-brewed “Havana Lager” to be waiting in my 14 th -story room, with a view of the airport, downtown Miami, and the Blue Lagoon pool deck, to make me feel “at home.”

For a traveler, “home” is hotels, shuttle busses and airplanes.
