The escape islands of India - Andaman and Nicobar is a peaceful getaway paradise. You could choose to spend as long as 10 days in this tropical beauty or as less as 3 days . Here is a planned itinerary to help you schedule your time in the islands. To learn more about each of the sites and what to do there, read my Andaman & Nicobar Guide . The guide includes in-depth details on each island, best water sport activities, food, transport and other useful tips.

If you have 7 days in hand…

Spend the first 3 days in port blair, day 1 - land in port blair.

🕕 1:00 pm - Check-in to your hotel Andaman has its international airport located in Port Blair. Your check-in would generally be in the afternoon. Have lunch, relax for a while and head right out.

🕕 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Cellular Jail A gruesome colonial prison with 696 isolated cells, designed by the Britishers, to punish Indian Independence activists. Explore the complete jail.

🕕 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm- Cellular Jail Light and sound show narrating and showcasing the trials and tribulations of the inmates.

🕕 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm - Dinner Fortune Resort Restaurant and The New Lighthouse Restaurant are good options.

Day 2 - Port Blair main city

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Corbyn Cove’s Beach Relax, stroll around, take in the breath-taking views in this crescent shaped coconut palm-fringed beach. Enjoy a drink and lunch at one of quaint beachside restaurants - Alto Espirito is a good option.

🕕 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm - Samudrika Marine Museum A museum designed to create awareness about oceanic environment and marine life.

🕕 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm - Chidiya Tapu Beach Offers the best sunset view in Andaman. Has a mini-zoo as well!

🕕 9:30 pm - Dinner If you are in the mood to sing your heart out then Feel Good Restaurant & Karaoke Night would be a good option to try. Don’t keep your expectations too high though!

Day 3 - Juolly and Red Skin Islands (Water sports day baby!)

Today we explore some spectacular islands towards the south of Port Blair. These islands are part of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Reserve and hence the underwater life here is very well conserved and is sure to make your jaw drop.

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Wandoor Beach Starting point of entry to the Juolly and Red Skin Islands.

🕕 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm - Juolly Beach Island First, have some yummy lunch from the shacks. Take a leisure walk to the forests and sunbathe on the sands. Underwater view here is terrific. GO crazy snorkeling, scuba diving all you want!

🕕 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm - Red skin Island Juolly’s twin! Drown in its sheer beauty. Yet another brilliant island with a terrific underwater view. Snorkel, scuba dive - do it all!

Day 4 - Day Trip to Baratang Island

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Baratang Drive from Port Blair to Baratang island. Have lunch.

🕕 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm - Limestone Caves A 20 minute boat ride takes you through the most dense and dreamy mangrove creeks to the naturally formed limestone caves, lined with stalactites and stalagmites that has held the secrets of this great island for years!

🕕 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm - Mud Volcano An eruption effect created when natural gases emitted by decaying organic matter underground pushes mud upwards

🕕 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm - Drive back to Port Blair and enjoy dinner/nightlife at Pink Fly lounge.

If you are not interested to travel to Baratang Island, another good option for a day trip from Port Blair would be North Bay Island . It offers some exclusive water rides like a Coral Safari Semi Submarine Ride and Glass Boats - these would be good water activities for a family where some members are scared to get into water, but still want to enjoy under water life!

Day 5 - Havelock Islands (Elephant Beach, Kalapathar Beach & Nightlife)

🕕 6:00 am - 9:00 am - Check-in to your hotel Take a ferry from Phoenix Bay jetty. There are 3 slots to pick from - 6:00 am, 11:30 am and 2:00 pm. The ride would take about 3 hours. Freshen up, have breakfast and head out!

🕕 10:00 am - 4:30 am - Elephant Beach Excellent for water sports. Try scuba diving, jet ski, banana boat ride and speed boats. Also offers different water sports in the form of sea walking and glass bottom boat ride! Have lunch at Something Different - A Beachside Cafe.

🕕 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm - Kalapathar Beach White sand beach famous for its natural rock formation of varied shape and size - known for its beautiful sunset in all of Havelock.

🕕 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm - Havelock Islands Nightlife Nemo Cafe - The Beach Bar is an excellent place to have some drinks, grab dinner and create a party scene.

Day 6 - Havelock Islands (Radhanagar Beach, Vijayanagar Beach)

Today we spend the day relaxing at different beaches and taking in their beauty - No water sport activities today unless you want to!

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:30 pm - Radhanagar Beach Relax, sun-tan and take long walks. Have lunch at Turtle House.

🕕 3:00 pm - 8:30 pm - Vijayanagar Beach Shallow waters and one can practically walk into the sea. Water is so clear that you can see the surface below. This place offers spectacular photo ops - a boat hooked to a bench, a tire hung to a tree! This beach has some of the best restaurants of Havelock Islands located close by - Fat Martin, Venom Bar are some good options to explore.

Day 7 - Neil Islands

Make sure to book your ferry ticket from Havelock to Neil islands at least 2 days in advance. Private ferry tickets can be booked online (make sure you book these prior to booking your hotel). Govt. ferry tickets are cheaper and have to be booked at least 2 days in advance from the ticket station. Ferry rides are limited and the demand is huge! High chances that you may not find a ticket if you try to book on the same day that you plan to travel.

🕕 10:00 am - 11:00 am - Check-in to your hotel

🕕 11:30 am - 1:30 pm - Laxmanpur Beach No. 1 and 2 Its natural bridge formation called the ‘Howrah Bridge’ is a popular tourist attraction. Enjoy the plethora of water sport options available here. Have lunch at either Ripon Seafood or Dugong Restaurant.

🕕 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm - Sitapur Beach Remote island coast with white sand & clear water, 2 bays, caves, palm trees & fresh coconuts. Quiet and secluded rocky beach - best known for its mesmerizing sunrise and sunset.

🕕 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm - Bharatpur Beach Swim in its water while watching the sun go down.

🕕 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm - Have dinner and head back.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, separating the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, comprise two main island groups; the Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Islands. The islands are located in the Bay of Bengal and are possessed by India. Andaman and Nicobar Islands consist of 572 islands, of which only 38 have permanent populations. In 2004, a tsunami, triggered by an earthquake in the nearby Indian Ocean, severely damaged the islands, drawing global attention. 

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located on the Bay of Bengal’s southeastern edge. The two island groups, Nicobar Island and its northern neighbor, form an arc that stretches towards the south for about 1,000 kilometers between Sumatra (Indonesia) and Myanmar . The arc also forms a boundary between the Andaman Sea on the east and the Bay of Bengal on the west.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are approximately 150 kilometers north of Aceh (Indonesia). The Andaman Sea separates the island group from Myanmar and Thailand. The Andaman Islands are located about 130 kilometers southwest of the Ayeyarwady Region, Myanmar, while the Nicobar Islands are located about 1,300 kilometers southeast of the Indian subcontinent. These two island groups are separated by the Ten Degree Channel. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands form Indian Union Territory.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands region experiences a tropical climate, moderated by the sea breeze. Temperatures on the islands rise from 70 degrees Fahrenheit to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit daily all year round. The region receives plenty of rainfall, averaging 3,000 mm annually. The southwest monsoons, blowing between May and September, and tropical cyclones (October to November) bring plenty of rainfall to the island. Greater Nicobar receives the most rainfall than other places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 

Geography Facts

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprise 572 islands, spanning 8,249 square kilometers. The two island groups are separated by Ten Degree Channel. The channel is about 10 km long from west to east and 150 km wide from north to south. Its minimum depth is 7.3 meters.

The Andaman comprises 325 islands, occupying 6,170 square kilometers. South, Middle, and North Andamans, collectively known as Great Andaman, are the archipelago’s main islands. Other Islands are Little Andaman, Interview, Sentinel, Rutland Island, and The Sisters. On the other hand, Nicobar consists of 247 islands, covering 1,765 square kilometers. Its main islands include Great Nicobar, Car Nicobar, Katchall, Camerota, and Noncowry Islands. Sumatra’s northwestern tip is approximately 150 km southwest of the island of Great Nicobar.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are parts of the island arc. The island arc is part of several submarine mountain ridges, including Patkai Range, Mentawai Ridge, and Rakhine Mountains. The highest point on the union territory is Saddle Peak, with an elevation of 732 meters above sea level. Saddle Peak is located on North Andaman Island. Other major peaks are Thullier (642 meters) and Mount Harriet (365 meters). The Barren Island on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the only active volcanoes in India and South Asia.

Nicobar has a more diverse terrain than Andaman, with some of its islands, like Car Nicobar, having flat surfaces covered by corals. The offshore coral formation makes it difficult for most ships to anchor on the islands. Other islands are hilly and contain numerous streams. Only Great Nicobar has plenty of fresh water in the region. The Andaman Islands has rough terrain, with enclosing hills and valleys. Betapur and Diglipur valleys in the Middle and North Andaman are some of the few valleys on Andaman with flat terrain. 

Brief History

The Andaman Islands were mainly occupied by the Andamanese people, while the Nicobar Islands were home to various ethnic groups, collectively known as Nicobarese people. From 1014 to 1042 CE, Rajendra Chole I of the Chole Empire used the islands as a naval base to launch an attack against the Srivijaya Empire (now Indonesia) and referred to the island as Ma-Nakkavaram,” meaning great naked/open land.

The Danish arrived on the islands in 1755 and made Nicobar a Dutch colony the following year. They first named the island “New Denmark” and later “Fredrick’s Island.” However, they abandoned the islands severally due to a malaria outbreak. Between 1778 and 1784, Austria established a colony on the islands, assuming that the Danish had abandoned them. They renamed the islands “Theresia Islands.” In 1789, the British established a naval base on Chatham Island, the current Port Blair location.

In October 1868, the Danish sold the Nicobar Islands to the British, who set up a penal colony for Indian subcontinent convicts. In 1872, Nicobar and Andaman became a single administrative unit, with a chief commissioner based in Port Blair. The islands were included as part of India in 1950 and declared a union territory in 1956.

On December 26, 2004, a 10-m high tsunami hit the islands. The tsunami was caused by an undersea megathrust (earthquake), leading to over 2,000 fatalities and rendering 40,000 people homeless. Some of the worst affected islands were Indira Point and Katchal. A significant portion of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was submerged, reducing the union territory’s area from 8,073 square kilometers to 7,950 square kilometers.

Flora And Fauna

Most parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are covered in dense tropical rainforests. The forests comprise floral characteristics of Myanmar, India, and Malaysia. There are over 2,200 plant species on the islands, of which 200 are endemic . Common plants include Andaman redwood (narra), fern, and orchid. Deciduous forest covers part of the Middle Andaman Islands, while North Andaman Islands have plenty of evergreen trees. Grassland is only found on the Nicobar Islands.

The tropical rainforest has a rich diversity of fauna despite being cut off from the mainland. 50 mammals, including endemic species such as Andaman wild boars, live on the islands. There are also 26 rodents and 14 bat species. Mammals include Andaman and Nicobar wild boars, spotted deer, shrew, elephants, and dugongs, which is Andaman State animal. Birds species are approximately 270, of which 14 are endemic.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ economy is based on agriculture and tourism, with agriculture as the main source livelihood source for most households. Approximately 487 square kilometers of land is under agriculture. Paddy is the main crop on the islands, while other crops include pulses and vegetables. Fruits such as orange, mango, and pineapple are widely grown in hilly areas.

The islands have pristine beaches that have become attractive tourist destinations. Water sport activities such as sea-walking and snorkeling are increasingly becoming popular on the islands. Plans to develop some islands into luxury resorts are underway. Some of the islands planned for development under the National Institute for Transforming India (NITI) are Smith, Avis, and Long Islands. According to recent estimates, 430,000 tourists visited the islands in 2016-2017, up from 130,000 a decade ago.

Although Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprise over 500 islands, only 38 are inhabited. The Union Territory has an estimated population of 380,000, of which 53% are males. The Andaman Islands account for about 90% of the total population, while the rest live on the Nicobar Islands. Port Blair is the territory’s largest and capital city, with an estimated population of 141,000.

There are approximately 450 native Andamanese people in the Andamans, while the Nicobarese are the majority in the Nicobar Islands. The indigenous Andamanese include Sentinelese and Jarawa. The majority of the islanders speak Bengali or Hindi, while Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil are also common. Hindi is the territory’s official language. English is also used for official communication. The major religion is Hindu (69.5%), followed by Christianity at 21.7%. 

Administration

Nicobar and Andaman Islands were put into one administrative unit in 1874 by the British. The territory is subdivided into three districts; Nicobar, South Andaman, and North and Middle Andaman. The districts are further subdivided into sub-divisions and townships (taluks). South Andaman has three sub-divisions and four taluks, including Port Blair taluk. The Union Territory is headed by Lieutenant Governor. It is represented in the House of the People (Lok Sabha) by one person from its Lok Sabha constituency.

Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ capital and largest city, serves as the entry point to the Union Territory. It can be accessed from mainland India by either sea or air. Port Blair Airport, also known as Veer Savarkar International Airport, is the primary airport serving the islands. It is situated approximately 2 kilometers south of the capital. A flight takes 2-3 hours from mainland India to the airport. It takes 3-4 days to travel from Port Blair to Visakhapatnam, Chennai, or Kolkata.

A (2024) guide to plan a trip to Andaman (with insider tips)

With its phenomenal beaches, mesmerizing nature trails, stunning sunsets, and elaborate history, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one place that had me bowled over. Located in the Bay of Bengal, some of the beaches in Andamans like the Radhanagar beach, have made it to various lists of the World’s best beaches . In fact, it is currently, one of the Blue Flag beaches in India . I have been quite vocal in recommending an Andaman trip plan for families, honeymoon couples and even solo trips. I am very confident that it will never disappoint but delight all those who head there.

Tucked away from the Indian Mainland, this archipelago of islands is still quite unexplored for a lot of reasons – the distance and the accessibility being two key ones. The place is a bit of a laggard in terms of development as compared to the bigger cities of India. However, personally, I feel that is where the charm of this Union Territory of India lies. This also, means that you need to be extra-prepared if you plan to a trip to Andaman.

Where is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India?

These islands are one of the eight union territories of India and are located in the Bay of Bengal. The group of islands is around 1300 km east of the Indian mainland.

Brief history of Andamans

There is archaeological evidence that these Indian islands have been inhabited for over 2,200 years. In fact, there are studies that trace the original human inhabitation to the current indigenous tribes of Andamans including the Andamanese, Nicobarese, and Shompen . However, there is nothing very significant in terms of historical events known about them.

The strategic location of these islands had made it an important naval point for many Indian rulers like the Chola dynasty . There are mentions of Ma-Nakkavaram or the great naked islands in some of the inscriptions found in Thanjavu r. King Rajendra Chola II in fact, used the islands to launch an attack against the Indonesian Srivijaya empire.

It was finally occupied by the Europeans in 1755 with the Danish East India Company taking it over. The British East India Company later, took over in 1789. They colonized it – first at Chatham Island and later moving it to Port Blair in 1858. This was the place used for the exile of the Indian freedom fighters during the Indian independence movement.

World War II saw a brief change of power when the Japanese took over. Later, the islands were returned to British control in 1945 and finally, transferred to India in 1950. Today, it is one of the eight Union territories of India and also, one of the best-kept secrets for travelers.

Facts about Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

It would not be wrong to say that this Indian archipelago is quite enigmatic. Most travelers to India do not even consider it for a visit and for the ones in India, not much is known. Here are some interesting Andaman and Nicobar Islands information that will help familiarize you with the place. These Andaman facts will also, increase the wanderlust quotient.

• Do you know how many islands are there in Andaman and Nicobar archipelago? Well, there are 571 islands of which only 37 are inhabited by humans. They are broadly classified into North and Middle Andaman islands, South Andaman and Nicobar islands. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by the Ten Degree Channel.
• Andaman and Nicobar islands also, finds a mention in the accounts of Marco Polo. He called the Nicobar as Necuverann while the Tamil rulers called it Nakkavaram .
• The names – Andaman and Nicobar are believed to have originated from the Malay language . Andaman is derived from Handuman – the name for Lord Hanuman while Nicobar is said to have come in from Nakkavaram (the Tamil name).
• One of the oldest and the most isolated tribes in the world – Sentinelese live on the North Sentinel island. They are not fond of humans and tend to shoot down visitors who attempt to land there. It is believed that there are 300 of them and they have lived here for almost 60,000 years. Definitely not one of those places to visit in Andamans 😉
• India’s only active volcano is on Barren Island which is a part of Andamans.
• The old Indian Rupee 20 has a picture of the Andaman Islands on it.
• Nicobar Islands is the nesting ground for the World’s largest turtles – The Leatherback turtles.
• Nicobar Islands also, yields a rare fruit called Pandunus or Nicobar Breadfruit . Not only is the fruit edible but parts of the plant are used for construction, mats and even a bathing brush.
• Have you heard of the Coconut crabs? They are the World’s largest crabs and are found in Andamans. These huge creatures are also called as Robber crabs.
• Last but not the least – the islands are actually closer to the Sumatra Islands in Indonesia (150 km) than the Indian mainland. They are also closer to Myanmar or Burma, just 180 km.

Tips to plan a trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands

What is the best way to reach andaman.

Let’s begin the main section of this Andaman and Nicobar travel guide with the best way to get to this Union territory of India. Port Blair is the headquartre or capital of this archipelago with its own airport and port. Earlier there were two ways to get to Port Blair – by flight or by ship . However, now the Andaman travel by ship has become almost nil and there is no alternative but to take a flight to the Veer Savarkar airport in Port Blair.

There are now direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata to Port Blair. Having said that I must warn you that there are limited flights to Port Blair and the air tickets for the same need to be booked well in advance to beat the last-minute exorbitant rates. Chennai and Kolkata have the maximum flights to Port Blair.

There are not many Andaman and Nicobar flights from Delhi and Mumbai. You might find one weekly direct flight but the rest are all flights with a layover.

To boost Andaman and Nicobar tourism, there are always additional special flights during the peak seasons – October to May . I would recommend keeping a price alert on these flights so that you can grab the best deal on the airfare, especially if there is a sale going on.

What is the best time to visit Andaman Nicobar?

October to February is generally considered the best time to visit Andamans. This is when the weather is cooler and you can enjoy the gentle waves of the beach without any issue. March and April tend to get quite warm but you can still enjoy the islands and its activities without any hitch.

Avoid the Andaman trip after the 2 nd week of May right to mid-September . This is when the monsoons begin on the islands. The islands are prone to heavy rain and thunderstorms. You might even have to watch out for cyclones during this month. A lot of inter-island travel becomes limited owing to the stormy sea.

Andaman travel guidelines and permits

During my earlier Andaman trip in 2018, there were certain permits that were required for Andamans – mainly because it was a Union territory and a tribal area. This was largely for Foreign Nationals who required a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). To boost Andaman and Nicobar island tourism, this restriction has now been lifted and all foreigners (except those from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China) can visit Port Blair as well as the other popular Andaman islands freely.

There are a few offbeat islands like Baratang Island that require you to travel with a convoy as you travel through tribal areas. There are specific timings for these that I have written about in this post .

 A few others like the Jolly Buoy island have permits as only a certain number of boats are allowed to go at a time. These permits need to taken in advance from the Andaman tourism office at Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair.

How to do Island hopping between the best Andaman islands?

With over 500 islands, you can pretty much expect to do a lot of Island hopping. I would categorize this activity into two buckets – the first are the Islands where you stay and the second are islands that you visit as a day trip.

In this section of the Andaman and Nicobar travel guide, I will be sharing tips on how to reach these Andaman tourist places.

Best stay islands to be included in your Andamans trip plan

Port Blair is the headquarters and the main island that you will land in when you visit Andamans. Consider this as your home base. It is from here that you will be visiting all the other islands on this list.

The two islands besides Port Blair that you should consider staying in are Havelock Island (now called Swaraj Dweep ) and Neil Island (presently called Shaheed Dweep). These islands can only be accessed via a ferry from Port Blair. The ferries or liners are run by Government as well as Private operators. Earlier when I had visited, one could not pre-book the government ferries. You would need to go to Phoenix Jetty in Port Blair to stand in the queues before the departure.

However, this has changed in the recent years and you can book these Ferries online through this link . The price for the same is around 600 – 850 per seat for a ticket to Swaraj Dweep from Port Blair. The above website has the fares for all the other destinations. Government ferries are usually used by the locals and have limited tourist seats.

There are three main private operators for inter-island ferries – Makruzz, Nautica and Green Ocean . Of these, Makruzz is the most recommended. I used it to travel to Swaraj Dweep island when I visited Andamans.

Very comfortable seating and easy to book as you can do so online through here . It is advisable to book the seats as soon as it opens as the same gets filled very fast. Typically the booking opens two weeks before your scheduled date of departure. Alternately get your hotel in Havelock or Port Blair to help you with the booking.

There are very limited timings and cruises available to these islands – typically just four a day.

Andaman tour plan for the day trip islands  

There are many islands around Port Blair that you can visit as a day trip. All you have to do is head to Aberdeen jetty to pick an operator and book instantly. Most hotels help you with the booking as well, so that you do not have to waste too much time.

The boat operators typically offer you packages that include two – three islands and you can book at your convenience. There are group boats where you travel with other people as well as private boat hires. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy etc are some places to visit in Andamans as a day trip.

One thing to note is that some islands like Jolly Buoy Island need a special permit . Only a limited number of people can go at a time to these islands. You will need to get this permit in advance from the Tourism Department counters at Aberdeen Jetty.

Where to stay in the Andamans? (Hotels in Andamans)

As mentioned earlier, the three main islands in Andamans that I recommend for a stay are  – Port Blair, Havelock Island and Neil Island.

Port Blair has plenty of options in all possible budgets for you to pick from. Being a small town, you can pick your stay anywhere here and you are likely to find the key attractions close to your hotel. I personally, picked Hotel Western Park at Delanipur Junction and found it quite convenient. Middle Point is another area close to this one that I found interesting – not too crowded but had enough shops and restaurants to keep you comfortable.

Havelock and Neil Island, on the other hand, have limited stay options. Given that, they are naturally more expensive than the hotels in Port Blair. In fact, budget the cost of the stay on these islands into your Andaman trip cost.

I highly recommend booking these hotels in advance. Both – Havelock and Neil are small islands and most of the accommodation is by the beaches. You can stay on any of these beaches as they are all just amazing! On my trip, I stayed on the Vijaynagar beach in Wild Orchid Resort – a cute, small property with lovely wooden cottages and very comfortable beds. A luxury stay here as well as on Neil Island is the Barefoot resort . On Havelock, this island is on the famed Radhanagar beach.

You can book most of these hotels online when you plan your trip to Andamans. One tip that I recommend is that once you have booked your hotel, call them up and reconfirm your booking.

How to go around on the islands in Andaman? (Conveyance and transport)

Port Blair has plenty of options for your internal travel – hiring a 2-wheeler, cabs and auto rickshaws . A lot of travel companies attach themselves to you from the time you arrive. For travel within Port Blair, you can just use auto-rickshaws. You might plan on visiting places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that are a little far off from Port Blair but manageable by road . Chidiya Tapu and Baratang Island are some examples. For these, it is best to hire a cab.

In Havelock Islands, there are no auto rickshaws and cabs on call. You have to rely on your hotel to help you with one. Alternatively, you can do what we did. We took the number of the cabbie who we found at the jetty when we reached Havelock. Whenever we required him, we would just call him. For the rest of the time, we hired a 2 wheeler and rode around ourselves. This really works well if you are attempting to plan a budget trip to Andaman.

Neil Island is even smaller than Havelock Islands and you do not really need a vehicle to move around.

What to eat in Andamans?

You get a good mix of Bengali and South Indian cuisines in Andaman. At Havelock and Port Blair, you have plenty of continental food options too. If you are a foodie, you will absolutely love the choice of shacks and restaurants at Havelock. From Chinese to continental and Indian, they sure know how to reach your heart through your stomach. Two of my favorite places here are Anju-Coco Resto and Something Different .

Neil Island, on the other hand, has a limited choice of restaurants. You might just have to rely on the food provided in the hotel that you have booked.

Mobile connectivity and Wi- Fi – an essential tip in the travel guide to Andaman.

Back in 2018, there was a very limited Wi-Fi or cellular data service. Some places in Andaman like the Baratang Island and Havelock Island were almost no-signal zones. Airtel worked the best there. Even with that, I had to keep roaming around to get that one blip of signals. Booking hotels back then was also, difficult owing to this issue. Of course, the signal free zone had its perks too – like a distraction free holiday.

However, things changed after PM Modi visited Andaman and Nicobar islands. Within months, cables were laid underwater from Chennai and today, you have 4G and in some cases, 5G connectivity on the key Andaman islands . Again, Airtel and BSNL work the best. Jio still has an issue and it is best not to rely on it.

Paying for various activities in Andamans

There are plenty of ATMs available in Port Blair and Havelock . Neil Island too, has one or two of them. However, it is best to carry some cash from the start as during my visit, I found a lot of ATMs out of cash in Havelock.

With good mobile connectivity, these days UPI apps like Google Pay and PayTM also, work well. You can use these payment modes during your trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Best Places to Visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Now this can be a long long list but here are the ones that I highly recommend that you should include in your Andaman tour plan. I have also, written separate and detailed posts on a few of these Andaman tourist attractions, the links of which are included in the respective sections.

As I mentioned earlier, Port Blair going to be your base in Andaman and Nicobar island. Here are some of the key places that you must visit when in the city.

• The Cellular Jail in Port Blair  – for its melancholic history and really unusual architecture. The stories within the walls can really chill you but also, interest and excite you. I also, recommend going in for their light and sound show. You can check this place out in detail through this post .
• Corbyn’s Cove – a beach on the capital island where you can indulge in water sports – including parasailing and jet-skiing. However, I recommend this only if you are not heading to Havelock Island
• Samundrika Museum – I am yet to write about this one but it is a small stop that helps you discover the cultural and biodiversity of these islands. It is managed by the Navy.
• Anthropology Museum – Andamans is native to a lot of tribals and discovering their lifestyle is quite enlightening. No pictures were allowed here and hence, describing it all might be difficult. With mock tribal huts, exhibits of their food vessels, their tools and clothes and explanations of their festivities, I found time short for this museum

Chidiya Tapu

This is a day trip from Port Blair. At a distance of 30 km. Chidiya Tapu is the place to experience the best sunsets in Andaman. For bird watchers, the island is a paradise with tons of migratory and native birds . The native birds include rare species of woodpeckers, Andaman green pigeons and woodswallows. There are tons of hiking trails and picnic spots  – in short, a perfect day trip with nature.

Ross Island or Subhash Chandra Bose Island

Ross Island is an island that leaves you wanting for more. With its overgrown root structures, old dilapidated buildings, green pastures and herds of friendly deer, you will find that time is not enough.  The island was initially used by the British as a residential base, which they later shifted to Port Blair. It is one of those Andaman islands that has to be done as a day trip from Port Blair . Check out how I became Lara Croft here .

North Bay island

The North Bay island is one of those Andaman tourist places that comes in combination with a visit to Ross Island. You can get to this island via the Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair. The place is famous for water sports and you can even do scuba diving here.

Chatham Mills

Another one of those day trips from Port Blair where you can visit an ancient mill with history that leads back to World War II and the British.. This is where the first settlement of the British started with Archibald Blair. The Chatham Saw Mills is the oldest and possibly, the largest saw mill in Asia.

Note however, you can only visit it between 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM on all days except for Mondays and Thursdays.

Jolly Buoy Island

Remember – this is one island that has limited number of permits for boats. You can visit it from Wandoor Beach after you have got a permit from the tourism office. Personally, I feel it is one of the best Andaman islands with its unspoiled nature, crystal-clear water and colorful reefs.

Baratang Island

Baratang Island is one of those places that requires you to enjoy its unusual journey. I absolutely adored it – for its limestone caves, the mangrove forests and the whole experience of going in a convoy to reach the islands. You can also visit the bubbling mud volcano on this island. It is another day trip that needs to taken from Port Blair. It can be booked online through this link .

Ross and Smith Islands in North Andamans

The approach to this group of two islands was a little difficult in the past. However, now a new bridge and road is being built. The waters around these two islands are perfect for snorkeling – in fact a delight with the lovely coral world. What makes this visit unique is that if you reach here during low tides, you can actually cross over from one island to the other by wading in water.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

You cannot plan a trip to Andaman without including Havelock Island . The place was my little heaven with its crystal blue water and unspoiled beaches. If there is a place that I want to retire to right now, Havelock it will be. This is where you need to spend at least 2 – 3 nights.

Not only is it perfect for families but it is one of those recommended places to visit in Andaman for a honeymoon. It is home to one of India’s Blue Flag beaches – Radhanagar Beach . This island is the best place to do scuba diving in Andamans. In fact, you can even do a PADI course during your three-day stay in Havelock island. Read more about this gorgeous island in this post.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

You cannot plan a honeymoon trip to Andaman without including Neil Island. It is another piece of Paradise where you can stay and engage in some water sports. The secluded air and the divine landscape of blue waters with artistic rocks adds that aura of serenity to the whole Andaman trip.

Water sports in Andamans

Andamans offers you plenty of options for water sports. It is best known for scuba diving – which I highly recommend that you include in your Andaman trip plan. You can even enjoy a half-submarine ride or do a sea walk . They have even got the self-ride seakart activity that I have so far experienced only in Mauritius (and I loved it!)

Snorkeling, jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing are available in plenty. Remember to engage with certified PADI instructors for Scuba Diving . The best options are available at Havelock. There are plenty of dive schools here, one almost every 100 m. On my last visit, the shore dives started at INR 2500 and the boat dives started at INR 3500.

All these activities can be arranged by your hotels or you can even do it yourself by reaching an island and engaging an operator who has a shop on it. The rates for the same are pretty standard and are displayed at the entrance of a shop. Please ensure you listen to all the instructions carefully and keep safe while engaging in these water sports.

Here is a list of essentials that you will need for your Andaman and Nicobar trip –

• A medicine kit with essential medicines
• A wide-brim hat
• Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
• Binoculars, especially if you are keen bird watcher

What kind of Andaman Travel Package is available for planning a trip? And should you go for one?

There are two types of travel packages for Andamans available – standard and custom. The standard packages like this one include hotels and transport including the ferries between the islands. However, they do not have day-to-day activities as a part of their deal. These can be booked online. They may not have air travel included.

The customized Andaman travel packages are designed to suit your taste. There are several tour companies like Mini India that help you with this. They can even organize the activities and help you with the permits on Andaman islands. You can even ask them to book your air tickets.

Tour packages definitely help you cut down time on booking hotels and transport in Andaman. Is it safe to travel to andamans.

Andamans is a very safe place to travel – for solo travelers, families as well as couples. The islands have a low crime rate as there is literally no place for anyone to hide. The islands are small and movement between them is restricted and well-tracked.

Are there any direct Mumbai to Andaman and Nicobar Islands flights?

At the moment, there is no direct flight from Mumbai to Port Blair. One has to take a flight with a layover from Mumbai. There may be special flights announced during the peak season.

How many days are enough for Andaman?

I would recommend at least 5 nights and 6 days of Andaman trip plan to enjoy the key islands.

Can I plan an Andaman trip on my own?

Yes, it is possible as well as quite easy to plan an Andaman trip on your own. Andamans and the North East of India are some of the places that still retain their pristine charm owing to lesser tourist footfalls. But it indeed is a Catch-22 situation, and soon we could see hordes of tourists overrunning these places. I didn’t know exactly were Andaman and Nicobar islands were until know. Of course I didn’t know as well they are Indian islands, from the map it could seem they belong to Malaysia or Myanmar. Andamans is a great place for vacation. The beaches reminds one about the beaches of Western Thailand. We didn’t go for for a scuba dive in Andamans.

Your post made me nostalgic about my visit to Andaman and Nicobar few years ago. I only liked Havelock Island and did my first scuba diving and snorkeling there. Though I didn’t like Neil Island. It was a total disaster. In Port Blair, I only liked Cellular Jail and its evening light show.

Your scuba diving pics made me nostalgic about my trip to Andaman islands when my father was the Secretary Tourism in the islands. I did water sports, drove water scooter, snorkeling and scuba diving. While diving, i touched the base of the shallow part of the ocean (around 6 meter) and was so proud of myself! Neil Island , also known as ‘Shaheed Dweep’ , is a cute little island village worth exploring among the popular islands to visit in Andaman and Nicobar. Neil Island offers lovely sandy beaches offering breathtaking sunset views and is perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving in more secluded spots with vibrant coral reefs. It is a quiet, quaint island with few commercial establishments, making Neil Island the perfect spot for a relaxing vacation. Neil Island is less crowded than Havelock Island and is all about peaceful beaches, perfect for strolls and maybe encountering a friendly crab or two along the way!

4. Ross Island

Ross Island , also known as ‘Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island ’, is one of the best islands to visit in Andaman and Nicobar that offers a blend of history and natural beauty. Once the capital of the Andaman Islands during British times and widely known as ‘ Paris of the East ‘, it’s just a short 15-minute boat ride from Port Blair. Explore the historic colonial ruins, and stroll on the white sandy beaches. Additionally, the island is home to various wildlife. Forget distant zoo sightings, here, you might end up in a game of tag with the local deers as they roam freely, adding a dash of unexpected fun to your island adventure.

5. North Bay Island

North Bay , located in the South Andaman Islands is renowned as one of the famous islands to visit in Andaman and Nicobar for water sports and offers a range of exciting water activities. 6.  Long Island

Long Island is one of the cleanest islands to visit in Andaman and Nicobar and is your go-to for peaceful beaches, minus the crowds. Swim in clear waters and explore Lalaji Bay Beach, a must-visit beach destination on Long Island known for its pristine beaches. With its narrow roads, this small island village feels like stepping back in time to Havelock Island 30-40 years ago walking through lush forests As the name suggests, there are some long treks that are best to do early in the morning, and unlike New York’s Long Island, here you won’t dodge traffic, just some tropical wildlife.

Long Island can be reached by ferry from Port Blair and Havelock Island.

7. Little Andaman

Little Andaman , also called as ‘Hutbay’, your pocket-sized paradise in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, offers a relaxed escape from the tourist crowds. Picture yourself on this remote island with uncrowded sandy beaches like Butler Bay Beach, taking leisurely swims, and easily exploring tropical rain forests. It’s like finding a quiet spot at a party, just you and the ocean, no loud music or crowds! Among the Splendid islands to visit in Andaman and Nicobar, Jolly Buoy Island is covered with 70% tropical forests and stands out as the place where you can experience zero pollution and smell nature’s actual fragrances, thanks to the No-plastic zone . Part of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park , Jolly Buoy Island operates for six months of the year, after which it closes for six months and Red Skin Island opens during that period.

9. Ross and Smith Island

Ross and Smith Islands , also known as the Twin Islands located in north Andaman Island, with pristine beaches and clear waters ideal for relaxing, swimming, snorkelling, and beach picnics. What makes them special is the thin 50-meter natural sand bar appearing during low tide, bridging the two islands for a one-of-a-kind adventure. You can reach these beautiful islands from Diglipur Island. Remember to head back before high tide, unless you’re up for an unexpected solo swimming competition in the Andaman Islands.

10. Interview Island

Interview Island in the Andaman Islands is a nature lover’s paradise, offering an unforgettable jungle trek through lush greenery and calm breezes. Uninhabited Islands to visit in Andaman and Nicobar

1. parrot island.

Parrot Island , is one of the bird watcher’s islands in Andaman Nicobar. To visit, you can take a government ferry or charter a private live-aboard boat from Diglipur Island. But remember, Norcondam Island’s policy is clear- admire from afar, stepping foot on this Andaman Islands treasure is strictly prohibited!

The kayaking experience was super fun and knowledgeable. Mr.Ali was very friendly and ensured we had a clam and a relaxing paddling experience and enriched us with facts about mangrove trees, it’s ecosystem and Abadman islands and clicked some cool pics 🙂

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.

The Indigenous tribes of Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Origins and Arrival:

• The Andaman Islands are home to four 'Negrito' tribes – the Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa and Sentinelese. The Nicobar Islands are home to two 'Mongoloid' tribes – the Shompen and Nicobarese.
• The 'Negrito' tribes are believed to have arrived in the islands from Africa up to 60,000 years ago. All are nomadic hunter-gatherers, hunting wild pig and monitor lizard, and catching fish with bows and arrows. They also collect honey, roots and berries from the forest.
• The 'Mongoloid' tribes probably came to the islands from the Malay-Burma coast several thousand years ago.

The Negrito Tribes of Andaman

Great Andamanese

• They are one of the five PVTGs (Primitive Tribal Groups) that live in the Andaman archipelago.
• They are based on Strait Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands .
• They speak Jeru among themselves.
• On 14th May 1859 great andamanese  fought  “ The Battle of Aberdeen” with britishers .
• The Andaman Government setup a statue for these Brave Soldiers in the Sea Shore of Marina Park as a memorial as it brings the spark of first freedom movement in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 
• They have long lived on Little Andaman Island , the most southerly island in the Andaman archipelago.
• They now live in a reserve in Dugong Creek that is a fraction of the size of their original territory.
• The Onge call themselves En-iregale , which means ‘perfect person.’
• The Onge are PVTGs (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups) .
• They have traditionally been hunter-gatherers and fishers , while also practicing cultivation.
• They practice a form of animism, with ancestor worship being significant.
• They traditionally make decisions through group consensus.
• The Jarawas are inhabiting presently the Western coast of Middle Andaman and South Andaman Islands.
• Jarawas continue to be hunting and gathering nomadic tribe .
• They hunt wild pigs, monitor lizard with bows and arrows . Tips of the arrow is made of Iron.
• Unlike Onges and Andamanese, Jarawas do not use dogs for hunting.
• Molluscus constitute major part of their Pisces food.
• Jarawas collect fruits and roots including honey from the forest.
• They build temporary huts in their camps .
• Approximately 400 members of the nomadic Jarawa tribe live in groups of 40-50 people in chaddhas – as they call their homes.

Sentinelese

• The Sentinelese tribe inhabits the small North Sentinel Island . They also are hostile like Jarawas to outsiders.
• Sentinelese are the hunting, fishing and gathering tribe.
• Sentinelese have dug – out Canoe which is used to move in the shallow coastal waters .
• They do not have the oars and therefore Canoes are propelled with long poles .
• Sentinelese, both men and women do not wear cloths.
• The estimated population is 100 to 150.

The Mongoloid Tribals Andaman:

• The Shompen are one of the most isolated tribes on Earth. They live on Great Nicobar Island in India, and most of them are uncontacted, refusing all interactions with outsiders.
• Though according to the Census (2011), the estimated population of Shompen is 229.
• They are one of the least studied Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in India.
• The Shompen are nomadic hunter-gatherers.
• Their staple food is the pandanus fruit, which they call larop.
• A Shompen family is controlled by the eldest male member, who controls all activities of the women and kids.
• Monogamy is the general rule, although polygamy is allowed too.
• Numbering around 300 people, they are now at risk of being totally wiped out by a “ mega-development” plan to transform their small island home into the “Hong Kong of India.”
• The Nicobarese are not one particular tribe, but a blanket term referring to the dominant tribes residing on the Nicobar Islands.
• Nicobarese are Mongoloid and are large in population when compared to others.
• They have a matriarchal chief and most of them practise Christianity , while others practise animism and other traditional religions of the
• The live mainly in joint families and the joint family is known as Tuhet. Among Nicobarese individual ownership doesn’t exist Tuhet owns the land, coconut and pigs .
• They mainly depend on agriculture for their food and even use fruits and nuts as a form of currency .
