Whitehaven Beach

whiteheaven scenic flight

Whitehaven Beach is one of the most popular day trips from Airlie Beach and for good reason – it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

The sparkling white sand and clear blue waters are an Instagrammer’s dream, and it’s no surprise that this beach is a favourite among travellers.

It was voted best beach in the world several times (including in 2021!).

Whitehaven Beach is located on Whitsunday Island, in the heart of the national park.

The beach is about 2 kilometres long. The sand is 98% quartz which means it’s very white, soft and even shiny!

But the most beautiful part (as well as the most famous) isn’t exactly the beach itself but Hill Inlet. From there, you can see the water spiralling inland creating beautiful swirls with the sand. It’s stunning.

To get to Whitehaven Beach, you’ll need to take a day cruise from Airlie Beach .

These cruises depart in the morning and return in the afternoon, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy this incredible beach.

Ocean Rafting tour Whitehaven

There aren’t any ferries that go to Whitehaven Beach so booking your tour is your only option. Here are the best Airlie Beach day tours to Whitehaven :

  • Thunder Cat day tour. You will be on a catamaran and will get to do the bush walk to Hill Inlet, relax on the beach and stop at Hook Island for some snorkelling. Lunch and morning snacks are included.
  • Ocean Rafting tour . This is another popular tour from Airlie Beach. In terms of itinerary, it’s basically the same as Thunder Cat. The main difference is the type of vessel. Ocean Rafting is a speed boat so it’s up to you to choose whether you prefer a catamaran or a speed boat. They are both amazing tours so you won’t be disappointed either way.
  • Helicopter + Cruise combo . If you’d like to discover Hill Inlet from higher up, you can opt for a combo cruise and helicopter ride . You will be going to the beach by boat, relaxing there for a bit, eating lunch and then discovering Hill Inlet from the helicopter. It’s a more expensive option but definitely worth it too!

If you’re looking for a day filled with relaxation and stunning natural scenery, then Whitehaven Beach is the perfect day trip from Airlie Beach.

Great Barrier Reef

great barrier reef scenic flight

Who says Whitsunday Coast says Great Barrier Reef ! It would be impossible to visit Airlie without taking a day trip to the reef!

This World Heritage Site is located off the coast of Queensland and is made up of over 2,900 reefs and 900 islands. While it stretches all the way up to the top, the part near Airlie Beach is particularly interesting.

It’s home to an abundance of marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkelling and scuba diving.

But the reason why a lot of people choose to visit the Great Barrier Reef in Airlie Beach and not in Cairns for example, is that you can find a true gem here: the heart reef !

The heart reef is a heart-shaped coral barrier and one of the most famous landmarks in Australia!

As you may imagine, the Great Barrier Reef is protected so you will need to book a tour in order to visit. The local operators go to specific places and make sure that everything is done while respecting the environment.

Here are some options for you:

  • Scuba diving day tour from Airlie Beach . This includes a cruise, snorkelling and (as an option) a dive at the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Scenic flight from Airlie Beach . While diving at the reef is an experience of a lifetime, flying over it is also well worth your time. From the sky, you truly realise how big the GBR is and that’s the only way you can really see the heart reef!
  • Helicopter tour . You can also opt for a helicopter flight with a landing on Whitehaven beach after.

While Reefworld is technically a part of the Great Barrier Reef, it was worth mentioning it separately.

The Reefworld is a floating pontoon located in the heart of the reef. It was supported by the Queensland Government’s Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund and it offers a chance to visitors to discover the Great Barrier Reef up close while still being respectful of the ecosystem.

From the pontoon, you can do different things including snorkelling or scuba diving. If you don’t wish to go in the water, you can also get to see what is going on underwater since the pontoon is semi-submersible.

If you walk downstairs, you can see the coral behind the windows. It’s so cool!

It’s a great place to visit for adults but also for kids as they can also swim with Nemo and his friends.

In addition to that, Reefworld has a restaurant, bar and even some rooms! You can also stay overnight if you want to!

If you are interested in booking a day tour to Reefworld, check this one out . It starts in Airlie Beach and includes a cruise as well as the afternoon on the pontoon.

Private Charter Day Trip

Chartering a boat in the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are one of the best places in the world when it comes to sailing since you can hire a boat without a license.

This is called bareboating. Basically, you can hire a boat without the crew and therefore you will be the skipper.

Obviously, you will be given an induction before you start so you know how things work but after that, you’ll be as free a bird!

If you are looking for a day out on the water, then booking a private charter will be an excellent thing to do. You can opt for the bareboating option but if you don’t feel confident enough, you can also ask to have a crew onboard.

This is a great way to spend the day with friends or family and enjoy everything the Whitsundays have to offer.

You will be able to visit some of the most beautiful locations in the area and, more importantly, at your own pace.

It’s the perfect opportunity to make your own itinerary, visit some hidden gems and stay away from the crowds.

Chartering a boat in the Whitsundays is also not always as expensive as it seems. For a family for example, it often works out the same (if not cheaper) as booking a tour.

This is a great place to visit if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet.

There are some walking opportunities and of course, beautiful beaches.

Horseshoe Bay in Bowen

Bowen is a small town located about an hour away from Airlie Beach.

It’s a popular stop on a road trip from Cairns to Brisbane but Bowen is also worth the trip for a day from Airlie.

The main reason to visit is to see the Big Mango! This is one of the most famous man-made landmarks in Australia and if seeing all the Australian big things is on your list, then visiting Bowen is a must-do!

Bowen is also home to fantastic beaches such as Horseshoe Bay, Murray’s Bay or Queen’s Beach.

Walking around town is also very pleasant since there is a lot of street art and you will find great fish and chips shops.

Lamberts Beach in Mackay Queensland

Mackay is located about 2 hours away from Airlie Beach by car.

This place is a great spot for day trips if you want to explore a city in Queensland that is not Brisbane or Cairns.

In Mackay, you can find the Botanic Gardens which have a rainforest and a mangrove walk.

You can also opt for a walk along the Riverside Bluewater trail.

If you want to go swimming, head to the Bluewater lagoon. It’s free and open all year round.

Finally, make sure to explore some of the beautiful beaches in the area such as Eimeo Beach, Harbour Beach, Town beach or Lamberts Beach.

If you want to discover the islands around (they are much less touristy than the Whitsundays which is very pleasant), you can book the Wildcat tour.

It will take you to Keswick Island, Brampton Island, Cockermouth Island, Scawfell Island or St Bee’s Island as well as the Great Barrier Reef.

Now that you know everything about the best day trips from Airlie Beach, it’s time to go and explore!

Whether you want to go swimming, snorkelling or diving, or if you want to explore the rainforest or go on a road trip, there is something for everyone!

Gloucester Island

If you want to discover a bit of a hidden gem while taking a day trip from Airlie Beach, Gloucester Island is perfect for you!

It’s located between Airlie Beach and Bowen. It’s the third largest island in the Whitsundays but yet, is not as popular with tourists.

This doesn’t mean there is nothing to do. In fact, it’s the perfect destination for people looking for secluded beaches and crystal-clear water. It will give you the opportunity to enjoy the Whitsundays while staying away from the crowds.

To get there, you will need to drive to Dingo Beach (40 minutes from Airlie Beach) and you can take a boat from there to the island. Both private and commercial options are available.

Once you’re there, make sure to check out Bona Bay and East Side Bay if you are feeling more adventurous.

It’s also a great place for fishing.

Dryander National Park

If you are looking for a unique Airlie Beach day trip, the Dryander National Park will be ideal.

This is one of the most secluded national parks in Australia, especially since you can’t access it by road, but only with a boat.

While this is not the easiest place to get to, don’t forget that you can do bareboating in the Whitsundays and therefore if you are up for hiring a boat and explore the area, this is a hidden gem you don’t want to miss out on.

It is located seven nautical miles from Airlie Beach. Make sure you are packing everything you will need during the day.

It’s a beautiful place to discover an unspoilt coastline. There are remains of volcanic activity which makes the place even more unique.

One of the most remarkable natural landmarks is Mount Dryander which stands at 790 m above sea level.

There are also a lot of fishing opportunities in the area.

Whitsundays Day Tour – The Best Whitsunday Islands Tours From Airlie Beach

Posted on Last updated: December 9, 2020

Found in the very heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Eastern Australia, lies a group of 74 tropical paradisal isles that make up the Whitsundays Islands.

The islands boast sweeping expanses of lush rainforests, glistening beaches, and jewel-coloured waters sheltering the colourful, life-filled reefs.

The Whitsundays are a ‘must-see’ on everyone’s Australia bucket list . The Whitsundays Islands is where the delights of the Great Barrier Reef and multifarious lifestyles, from resorts and hotels, all meet.

When I first saw photos of the Whitsundays I knew I had to add them to my ultimate travel bucket list . Most travellers choose to visit the Whitsundays on a day trip from mainland Australia.

If you’re among them, you’ve come to the right place!

In this guide I’ve outlined everything you need to know about doing a day tour to the Whitsundays, including departure points, prices, what to expect, and even alternative tours.

So what are you waiting for? The crystal clear waters of the Whitsundays are waiting, let’s dive in!

About the Whitsundays

Whitsundays forms part of the Cumberland Group of islands – the largest offshore chain of islands along the Australian coastline in the Coral Sea.

The majority of these isles are uninhabited (only eight are inhabited) and form part of the national parks . Several of the islands offer resort accommodation.

Airlie Beach is the main town on the mainland that is used as an entry point to the islands. Other big cities closeby include Cairns, 630km north, and Townsville, around 900km north of Brisbane.

The region provides a warm subtropical climate, with average temperatures around 27.4°C.

It has a well-defined dry season during winter (June – August), with average temperatures reaching 24°C, making it the perfect beachside holiday destination year-round.

The Whitsundays Islands are home to the world-renowned Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach ( rated the second-best beach in the world ). The perfect place to relax on the pristine beaches or stroll through the lush rainforests.

How to get to the Whitsundays from Airlie Beach

The Whitsundays Islands aren’t connected to the mainland. So unless you fly to Hamilton Island, you’ll need to take a ferry regardless of which mode of transportation you take along the mainland.

The easiest way to get to the Whitsunday Islands is by plane . The largest inhabited island, Hamilton Island, is serviced by its own airport, The Great Barrier Reef Airport.

It has direct flights from Melbourne, Cairns , Sydney and Brisbane. Another airport servicing the Whitsundays is Whitsunday Coast Airport, at Proserpine, 20km from Airlie Beach.

There are also two other light plane airports, Whitsunday Airport at the Shute harbour just 5km from Airlie Beach and an airport on Lindeman Island.

Lindeman Island has domestic and international connections via Sydney , Cairns, and Brisbane airports.

The majority of ferries travel between Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, though some also run from Shute Harbour, 10km east. The crossing takes around an hour.

Keep in mind, these are passenger-only ferries, so if you are driving by car , you’ll need to leave it at the ‘long-stay’ parking lot. However, many travellers choose to stay in Airlie Beach and take a Whitsundays day trip.

Most people drive to Airlie Beach as part of a longer Australia East Coast road trip . Whether you go from Cairns to Brisbane or viceversa, you’re guaranteed an epic Aussie road trip !

With an organised tour

If you prefer to have everything organised, you can also visit the Whitsunday Islands with an organised tour.

These usually set off from Airlie Beach, take you to explore the islands and then return either the same day or the following day, depending on what tour you choose.

These are great if you’re travelling on a tight schedule, or don’t want to have to organise an overnight stay at the resorts of Hamilton Island.

Our experience doing an Airlie Beach Tours to Whitsundays

We only did a day trip to the Whitsundays since we had a tight itinerary, and didn’t have time to spend longer at the islands.

If you’re up for an adventure, embark on a thrilling Whitsundays ocean rafting tour from Airlie Beach.

The duration of the tour is around 6.5 hours to a full day. You have two options to choose from with this trip – the North or the South Whitehaven option.

We opted for the Airlie Beach day trip to the North Whitehaven side and visited two different snorkelling stops. First on Hook Island and then to Whitehaven Beach.

It’s the perfect option for anyone looking to do a lot of snorkelling. It’s an amazing tour, but you won’t be spending much time on the actual islands with this choice.

We enjoyed lunch at the north end of Whitehaven beach, and then took a guided walk through the National Park and the Hill Inlet lookout point.

There you’ll see breathtaking views of blue and white strips, where the turquoise waters, reefs and sands meet. This was a really phenomenal day trip, and I wish we had stayed longer and explored a bit more of the islands.

The second option is the South Whitehaven tour and is ideal if you’re looking to do more relaxing on the beach.

You’ll explore one snorkel destination at Border or Dumbell Islands, and visit both the northern and southern ends of the pristine Whitehaven Beach.

You’ll get to relax on the world-renowned white silica sands or frolic in the waters for around 2-hours. Doing a day trip on a speed boat is ideal since the travel time is usually reduced.

Big sailing boats or catamarans are comfier to cruise on, but will take much longer to reach the islands. We also had a bit of an adventurous captain who did some speed tricks out at sea, which were pretty exhilarating!

The islands were so stunning that I wish we had been able to spend longer there. However as far as day trips go, the one we did was pretty awesome.

What to Bring on Your Whitsundays Island Day Tour

Although we all know how to pack for exciting tours, here are some of the general trip essentials and must-haves for a Whitsundays day tour.

Sunscreen – is your absolute trusty steed if you’re travelling in Australia. You’ll want to get a lotion that will protect you from the sun and to also be reef friendly.

Sun hat – it’s always good to have a sun hat when spending a day at the beach. The Australian sun can be really harsh, so having some shade to protect your face is essential.

Flip flops – you’ll want a pair of light shoes/flops to easily pack into your bag for exploring the shores.

Light waterproof jacket – is an essential item I like to take along with me, wherever I go. Although Whitsundays provides a subtropical climate, you may find it getting chilly if it rains or in the late afternoons. Taking a light waterproof jacket doesn’t need much space, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Reusable water bottle – not only provides you with water, but you also help conserve the environment when on tours. Most tour operators provide water and snacks, but it is always great to keep your own reusable water bottle at hand.

Fast-drying towel – is perfect for all purposes – camping, travel, beach, backpacking, swimming. It’s lightweight, absorbent and dries quickly. It’s certainly a popular travel accessory and one of my ‘must-have’ items.

Is doing a Whitsunday day Tour worth it?

To put it shortly, absolutely! With a subtropical climate and stunning tropical islands, you’ll certainly want to take a visit and see the paradise for yourself.

And if you take a ferry, it’s a short 1h 5m to get there, which is not bad at all.

You can explore these idyllic islands by snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing and swimming from the many beaches or the tour boat.

The day tour we took in Whitsundays is ideal if you want to do more snorkelling. It’s a lovely day trip, but you’ll spend a lot of time at sea and not actually on the islands.

More Whitsundays Tours Options

The Whitsundays day tour is a spectacular excursion, but for the next time, I will certainly opt for the overnight option to explore the surrounding areas more.

If you have more time, I’d suggest doing an overnight tour around the Whitsunday Islands. You’ll get the most out of your trip sailing, snorkelling, hiking and kayaking in these magical gem clear waters.

Not only that, but you’ll also get to embark on an eco-friendly exploration of hidden bays hugging around the reefs.

You’ll also get to visit the famous Whitehaven Beach, the Hill Inlet, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and other Whitsundays Islands.

Chilling at the beach

Another excellent option is the 2-day combo tour to the outer Great Barrier Reef and some of the best locations in the Whitsundays.

Your first day is a 10-hour trip to explore the outer Great Barrier Reef on a cruise and pontoon, passing by Whitsunday islands. There you’re able to snorkel and enjoy a buffet lunch in paradise.

On your second day, you’ll embark on a 10-hour Catamaran Sailing tour to Whitehaven, the Hill Inlet and enjoy snorkelling in the crystal clear waters.
