What is the Perfect Song for a Travel Video?

The perfect song for a travel video is subjective and depends on the specific theme, mood, and destination of your video. However, there are a few factors to consider when selecting the perfect song:

  • Genre and Style: Choose a song that aligns with the genre and style of your travel video. For example, if your video focuses on adventure sports, an energetic and adrenaline-pumping track may be suitable. For a serene nature video, an ambient or instrumental piece could work well.
  • Lyrics and Theme: Pay attention to the lyrics and theme of the song. Look for lyrics that complement or enhance the visuals and story of your travel video. Consider songs with positive and inspiring messages that resonate with the experiences and emotions captured in your footage.

How Do You Find the Perfect Song for Instagram Stories?

Finding the perfect song for your Instagram stories involves a combination of exploration, personal taste, and consideration of the story you want to tell. Here are some tips to help you find the right song:

  • Define the Mood and Theme: Determine the mood and theme of your Instagram story. Do you want it to be upbeat and lively, nostalgic and reflective, or inspirational and motivational? This will guide your search for the perfect song.

  • Use Song Discovery Apps: Apps like Shazam or SoundHound can identify songs playing around you. If you come across a song that resonates with your story while you’re out and about, use these apps to identify and save the song for later use.
  • Follow Influencers and Content Creators: Follow Instagram influencers or content creators who share similar travel experiences and storytelling styles. Pay attention to the songs they use in their stories for inspiration and ideas.
  • Create Your Own Playlist: Curate a personal playlist of songs that evoke the desired emotions and complement your travel stories. This way, you’ll have a go-to collection of tracks that resonate with your content.

Go Viral With These 10 Trending Travel Songs For Instagram Reels in 2024

Whether travelling to an exotic location or taking a road trip, posting your adventures on platforms like Instagram Reels has become an effective means to document and highlight your experiences.

But just posting doesn’t guarantee engagement. One vital element that can boost your travel content is your choice of music. A well-chosen song can define the tone, elicit emotions, and increase the engagement of your videos.

To help you go viral with your travel content, we’ve prepared a list of 10 trending travel songs for Instagram Reels.

travel songs instagram stories

What Exactly Are Travel Reel Songs?

Travel reel songs are trending music used in Instagram Reels to create entertaining and engaging vacation content. Using popular songs that evoke a sense of excitement or wanderlust can help bring your adventure reels to life and make them more appealing to your audience.

However, if you want to get engaging travel songs for Instagram reels, there are three options. They are as follows.

  • Use music that complements the vibe of your brand.
  • Make use of viral music.
  • Make use of background music.

How to find the right music to match the vibe of your brand

Finding the right music to match the vibe of your brand is essential for creating reels that resonate with your followers. The songs you select should fit the overall tone and message you want to convey.

travel songs instagram stories

Furthermore, the following are methods that will help you find music that matches your brand:

  • Define the personality and values of your brand: Is your brand modern and edgy or traditional and classic? Do you want to exude vigour, sophistication, or relaxation? Finding music that matches your brand will be easier once you understand its personality and values.
  • Investigate your target audience: Select music from genres and eras your target audience enjoys. For example, classic rock songs may appeal to Baby Boomers, whereas recent pop hits are more likely to appeal to Millennials and Gen Z.
  • Seek inspiration: Look through music blogs and playlists to find new and emerging artists who fit the vibe of your brand.
  • Test and refine: Once you’ve chosen some potential tracks, run them by your target audience to see how they react.

How to use viral sounds to expand reach and engagement

Using popular sounds and music on Reels is a simple way to boost views and engagement. People enjoy discovering new songs and sounds, so highlighting what is currently popular or trending is an excellent strategy.

travel songs instagram stories

Furthermore, the following are methods for obtaining viral sounds for your Instagram reels:

  • A trending TikTok sound : Reusing popular TikTok sounds on Reels is a simple way to capitalise on their popularity.
  • A new song snippet: When a famous artist releases a new song, posting a short clip on Reels within a day or two of its release allows you to capitalise on the hype.
  • A sound from a recently released film or TV show: Profit from the popularity of movies, TV shows, characters, or quotes.
  • A sound of a viral meme: Meme sounds and catchphrases are notorious for spreading like wildfire across platforms. Including one in your Reel can increase its visibility and shares.
  • To get trending IG songs, follow @creators and @reelstips : On Fridays, they upload a lot of viral Instagram trends.

How to make Instagram reels with background music

Are you tired of using the same sound as everyone else? Do you want something unique for your brand? Here’s an idea: use background music for reels.

travel songs instagram stories

Here are some ideas to help you go viral:

  • Voiceovers: Your voice is a potent tool, and including a voiceover in your reel can help bring your travel experiences to life. Your voiceover should be exciting and informative while complementing the visuals in your reel.
  • Use soft and mellow instrumentals: Mellow, soft instrumentals are ideal for travel-themed reels. They create a soothing and relaxing environment that transports viewers to your location.
  • Make use of nature sounds: The sound of waves crashing against the shore, birds chirping in the morning, or rain falling on leaves can enhance the immersion of your footage.

Note: Keep your reel short and sweet – aim for 15-30 seconds – and always make sure the music and sounds you use are licensed for commercial use or fall under fair use guidelines.

INSTAGRAM TRAVEL INFLUENCERS BEST SONGS TO LISTEN TO

Confucius said that the beginning of all wisdom is to call things by their proper name. So we’ll start today with a very clear distinction: Travelling is punk rock . Running for President is not .

Traveling is the very best thing you can do for yourself. A literal gift that keeps on giving. It makes the world feel smaller, shows you the interconnectedness of all humanity, and humbles by reminding you of just how small a space you occupy on this planet. It changes every aspect of yourself and how you view that world, even if you don’t realize it.

That whole ‘it’s the journey not the destination’ bit has some truth to it, but a truly kickass destination makes for the best journeys. Here at We Are: The Guard we interviewed some of Instagram’s Travel Influencers who’ve managed to make traveling their life. And they’ve somehow managed to do this without fronting Black Flag or being a world class chef, so good for them.

Let’s see what they have to say about their favorite place to travel and the song that takes them there.

INFLUENCER: VAUGHAN MCSHANE

Favorite travel destination: Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Favorite song fit for the occassion: Bastille - Good Grief (Don Diablo Remix)

Getting to the Komodo Islands in Indonesia is a stellar experience in itself. You’re taking connecting flights between the most beautiful islands on the planet encompassed by turquoise waters (that glitter beside you as your plane finds the landing strip,) before jumping on a speedboat and spending the next couple of hours cruising past hundreds of tiny tropical islands and outcrops while heading towards Rinca and Komodo - the only two islands in the world where the Komodo dragon exists. I spent a good chunk of the time on the speedboat listening to Bastille’s “Good Grief” (Don Diablo Remix) - just thinking of it brings the memories flooding back. Such a sick trip spent with a bunch of epic people.

Favorite travel destination:Presque Île de Crozon

Favorite song fit for the occassion: Julien Doré - Le Lac .

My favorite destination is not a very exotic one but it is a place that is truly wonderful. It is a small beach in France in the Brittany region: the Presque Île de Crozon, there are beautiful wild beaches with very few tourists. For me, this place has remained in my heart.

I think the song that pairs perfectly with this extraordinary place is a song by Julien DorĂ© “Le Lac.“

INFLUENCER: BILLY ROY PEREZ

Favorite travel destination: PhuQuoc Island, Vietnam Favorite song fit for the occasion: Manu Chao - Libertad

My favorite destination is PhuQuoc Island, Vietnam. This island took my breath away. It is wild, green, and an incredibly peaceful place. Love the days where I could rent a motorbike and just explore all corners of the islands. Mingle with local people, indulge in their food, temples, rainforest, waterfalls, paradise beaches, and more. I have been in 16 countries so far, and PhuQuoc Island is the only one I have repeated (already three times). Nothing better than relaxing on the beach with a coconut while enjoying the sunset and listening “Libertad” song by Manu Chao.

INFLUENCER: IVAN VALOR

Favorite travel destination: Bali Favorite song fit for the occasion: Emipre of The Sun - Walking On A Dream

Well, my favorite destination so far has been Bali. When we visited Bali, we were surprised by the different landscapes in such a short distance. If you wanted beach, you had the best beaches around; if you wanted jungle, there was the city of Ubud with an amazing tropical feel. Bali is like paradise, anything you have in your mind that relates to paradise, you will find it in Bali.

That’s why I loved thinking of Bali with the song “Walking On A Dream” by Empire of the Sun!

INFLUENCER: CHRISTIAN GERTSEN

Favorite travel destination: Tokyo, Japan Favorite song fit for the occasion: “Lost in Japan” by Shawn Mendes and “Postcard” by Troye Sivan - feat. Gordi

My FAVORITE travel destination so far is: Tokyo, Japan

Last year I visited Tokyo, Japan for the first time and Japan keeps calling me in my mind to be there and explore every inch of its land. Being in Tokyo is almost like walking into the future full of contrast. A melting pot of fashion-forward and savvy Harajuku, an old Edo-era ambient in Kawagoe and Yanaka and the high-tech Akihabara and Odaiba.

My next visit to Japan will be Mount Fuji and other cities and islands.

We’ll be back tomorrow with part two of Instagram’s Travel Influencers and the Best Songs they listen to.

These 45 Instagram Story songs include trending hits and throwbacks.

No. 38 might be my fave.

Of all the Instagram Story stickers available on the app — Links , “Add Yours” prompts , Polls, and more — the one that can keep you tinkering for hours has to be the Music sticker. Not only is it a super personal way to spruce up your Story, but it sets the vibe for your post, too. With thousands of songs to choose from, though, it can be tough figuring out which tunes to use . Luckily, this list of the 45 best songs for Instagram Stories includes trending hits and throwbacks, so you can easily pick the perfect song for just about any occasion. You’re welcome.

Adding a song to your Instagram Story is a great way to give your followers a better understanding of your music taste, and an even better way to put someone on to a song they might have never heard otherwise. At this point, you’re probably super familiar with the Music sticker (it’s been around since June 2018 , after all), but if you haven’t used the feature in a minute, here’s a quick refresher.

To use the sticker, all you have to do is open the Story camera, take or import the content you want to use, then tap the sticker button with the smiley face in the top right corner. Select the Music sticker, type in the name of the song you want to use, and you’re good to go. Instagram only lets you play 15 seconds of a song at a time, but you can select which 15 seconds you want to use by dragging the tool at the bottom of the page. And if you want to make your Story feel like a karaoke party, you can opt to display the lyrics, too.

New Songs For Instagram Stories

These jams from 2022 and 2023 will keep your Story fresh, and they’ve been arranged from most to least recent to keep your Story as up-to-date as you’d like.

It may have been released within the first two weeks of the year, but “ Flowers ” is already *the* breakup anthem of 2023. With a possible reference to Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man ,” Cyrus flips the sad song on its head and reminds herself she can love herself better than her ex.

This song is a whole vibe, and will give your Story a spacey, meditative aesthetic on a chill Sunday morning.

These 45 Instagram Story songs include trending hits and throwbacks.

Everyone has a “It’s me, hi / I’m the problem, it’s me” moment, and this song is perfect for calling yourself out for drinking too much coffee or overwatering your plants on the ‘Gram.

You don’t have to be lonely to use this song on your Story. In fact, the disco-inspired outro is an upbeat tune that’s perfect for dancing it out over IG with your besties.

Whether you’re getting hyped for a concert, or giving your followers a peek into your workout routine, “Pink Venom” is sure to fit the mood.

Is using a song called “Party” in an IG Story about a party a little on the nose? Maybe. Am I going to do it anyway? Absolutely.

This song is the definition of a good time, and sometimes that’s all your IG Story needs.

Sabrina Carpenter really gave us some clutch IG captions with this song, like “You gotta keep up with me / I got some young energy” and “I think I got an ex, but I forgot him / And I can't find my chill, I must've lost it.” But when a grid post is too much of a commitment, using this song in your Story is basically like sending out a bat signal to your crush.

Everyone has a bad habit, but listening to this song on repeat isn’t one of them. It’s the perfect track for showing off your bad habit — or for showing off your top-notch taste in music.

You can never go wrong with a Drake song, and this uptempo dance tune is no exception. Plus, you get the bonus of having a solid Drake quotable in this song with the lyric, “I know my funeral gon’ be lit / ‘Cause of how I treated people.” Sheesh.

These are the 45 best Instagram Story songs, and they include trending hits and throwbacks.

As the lead single to Queen Bey’s seventh studio album, Renaissance , “ BREAK MY SOUL ” has all the makings of the song of the summer: a dance beat, a catchy hook, and BeyoncĂ©, obviously. But you don’t have to save this song exclusively for your summer Stories, because the fun, energetic house track is sure to get your Story viewers on their feet at any time of year.

There’s nothing wrong with being a little conceited – or gassing yourself up on your IG Story.

No offense, but “Get in line, pass the wine, b*tch / We’re going straight to hell” is the best line of 2022. Add a little country twang to your Story with this banger about LGBTQ+ acceptance.

Speaking of viral TikTok hits, “Where You Are” has a short and sweet chorus that fits perfectly within Instagram Story’s 15-second limits for songs, and fits the vibe of almost any post.

Teenage angst is real , and sometimes you just need to let it all out with a song like “American Teenager” that knows what you’re going through.

The best songs for Instagram Story include trending hits and throwbacks.

With the feel-good chorus “Turn up the music, turn down the lights / I gotta feeling I’m gon’ be alright,” and the memorable “In a minute / Imma need a / Sentimental / Man or woman / To pump me up” line in the second verse, this song has something for everyone – just like all of Lizzo’s songs.

Got any travel plans coming up? If so, don’t forget to post a pretty pic of the clouds as you’re soaring 30,000 feet above ground and use “First Class” to give it that extra pop of luxury — even if you’re flying economy.

If you saw the “As It Was” trend going around on TikTok when Harry dropped this track in April 2022 , then you know the chorus (“You know it’s not the same / As it was”) makes this the perfect song to accompany your baby pics.

Between the groovy “Genius Of Love” sample, the homage to Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy,” and Latto’s feisty lyrics, this song was made to match your bad b*tch energy.

The best songs for Instagram Story include trending hits and throwbacks.

With biting lyrics like, “You say I'm turning evil / I'll say I'm finally pure / Shine bright in my reflection/ Think I lost myself before,” and “Held me back, tied me up inside a cage / Had to change my life 'cause I knew you'd stay the same,” this song is the ultimate IDGAF breakup anthem. And it sends a message, too.

Everyone knows that food eats first, but you don’t need to show off your meal to use this Rosalía banger in your IG Story, because the reggaeton beat is sure to pair well with any of your going out pics.

Admit it: you’ve posted your fair share of thirst traps to Stories in your day. “Jealousy” is basically the best song to use in a thirsty Story, because the lively dancehall beat will definitely catch the attention of that certain someone, and the lyrics act as a tongue and cheek way to poke fun at the subtleness of your post.

This viral TikTok track is an earworm for a reason – the catchy intro (“La da, la da da, la la la / La da, la da di da da, la la la la la”) and the sweet and breezy lyrics make give you that summer feeling all year long. A late 2021 release counts when it’s a song as catchy as this one.

OK, this song technically came out at the end of 2021, but the album that it’s featured on came out in 2022, so it counts. Plus, no song matches a good mood better than “Silk Chiffon.” With warm lyrics like “Like, life's so fun, life's so fun / Got my mini skirt and my rollerblades on,” this song feels like a big hug from an old friend, and is guaranteed to make all your Story viewers feel good.

This ‘80s-inspired synth-pop tune from The Weeknd works with so many different kinds of Story posts: throwback pics, GRWMs, party videos, you name it. Another 2021 single on a 2022 album, so it stays!

“Kiss Me More” is a certified banger, and no matter who you’re posting a pic of – your SO, your cat, your dog, or yourself – the song is sure to get the attention of your followers.

Justin Bieber’s song “Peaches” is the anthem of the summer with some feel-good lyrics that you’ll want to sing along to. TBH, they don’t completely make sense (getting your peaches out in Georgia doesn't seem to have a lot to do with taking your significant other up north to Canada), but adding the song to your Story will definitely get you into the patio season mood.

Hype up your bestie and your day one with this 2021 hit from Saweetie and Doja Cat. The lyrics are definitely NSFW, but they’re perfect when you need a twerk-worthy pump-up anthem to dance to.

From rainy days spent in bed to highlighting your strength through a difficult time, the“I’d rather be dry but at least I’m alive” chorus from this unstoppable duo can be used in so many ways.

Hanging out with your besties? Dua Lipa’s undeniably catchy “Levitating” will add some major GNO energy to your Story. Even if you can’t be out dancing until dawn, the chorus — “I got you, moonlight, you're my starlight/I need you all night, come on, dance with me/I'm levitating” — is definitely a vibe.

If you and your crew need a motivational pick-me-up, Megan Thee Stallion’s 2020 anthem “Savage” has got you covered. The intro, where Megan raps, “I'm that b*tch, been that b*tch, still that b*tch, will forever be that b*tch,” will remind yourself (and your followers) that you’re not going to let anyone or anything bring you down. Plus, the song is just catchy.

This song is for all the hustlers out there. The intro, “Workin' on the weekend like usual/Way off in the deep end like usual” is perfect when you want to add a work hard, play hard vibe to your Instagram Story.

The 45 best Instagram Story songs include trending hits and throwbacks.

No matter how many times you listen to this song, it never seems to get old. Even if they’ve heard it a million times, your followers will still be psyched to see this song on your Story.

Ever since the former Fifth Harmony star said “Imma break you off, let me be your motivation” in 2019, workout playlist have never been the same – and neither have post-gym selfies. But I’m not mad about it, because a little “Motivation” goes a long way.

Eilish was only 17 years old when this hit was released in 2019, which is probably why "bad guy” never gets old with its edgy lyrics and catchy beat.

Grande might have found her own happily ever after , but there’s no denying her track "thank u, next" is a solid breakup bop. Regardless if you just experienced tremendous heartbreak or if you're celebrating being single, it's a powerful song that'll get all your friends chiming in.

This track sounds exactly how a tropical vacation feels, and whether you’re unwinding by the pool with a coconut drink in the Caribbean or enjoying a staycation locally, “I Like It” is sure to make a great addition to all your impressive vacay pics.

With lyrics like “It’s like I’m powerful with a little bit of tender / An emotional sexual bender / Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better / There’s nothing better,” this song is the perfect ode to your SO.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find most of Rihanna’s discography in the Music sticker catalog, but one classic that is available is “Wild Thoughts” by DJ Khaled. Whether you’re on a tropical beach vacation, or having a night out with your besties, this song is sure to heat up your Story.

"Good As Hell" by Lizzo

Lizzo's "Good As Hell" lyrics never fail to boost my confidence. There's no denying that singing it will always make you — and your pals — feel like a damn kween.

It's hard to believe that BeyoncĂ© "Formation" came out all the way back in 2016. However, the lyrics “Okay, okay, ladies, now let's get in formation, I slay / Okay ladies, now let's get in formation, I slay” never fail to make you feel like a total boss singing along and dancing like a member of the Beyhive.

Nicki Minaj. BeyoncĂ©. Need I say more?! But seriously, there’s no better way to commemorate a night out with your besties than by using the catchy “I’m feelin’ myself, I’m feelin’ myself, I’m feelin’ my” chorus of this empowering anthem in your IG Story.

The 45 best Instagram Story songs include trending hits and throwbacks.

Keep the party going all night, or relive the best moments the next day, with “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus as the soundtrack to your late-night antics.

You can’t post pics from the party without using the greatest party song of all time. I’m sorry, but those are the rules. Plus, it’s impossible not to be nostalgic for the days when you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the words “I don’t care / I love it” on the radio. So before you hit Post on that throwback pic, don’t forget to include this song to give it the full effect.

When you and your besties are on your worst behavior, “Bad Girls” is the way to go. I mean, c’mon, it’s a classic for a reason.

Exactly ten years later, Farhan Akhtar's sister Zoya comes out with an extension of the road trip  vibe movie, only this time on a much larger scale. 4. Tanha Dil (Shaan)

5. Suhana Safar Aur Ye (Madhumati)

There is a reason why 'old is gold', it's because of classics like this song. From the 1958 movie Madhumati, picturized on Dilip Kumar and Vyjantimala, the tune is so melodious you can't help but hum along with it - A must add on your list of road trip songs.

One of the best songs to bounce to, this number so aptly reverberates with the ethos of our generation, that it is impossible to not be in love with. All the more so when we have our travelling boots on! It is surely one of the best Hindi travel songs from the bygone era.

15. Kabira (Ye Jawani Hai Deewani)

Lived Here for a While

Good Looks Lived Here for a While

By Stephen M. Deusner

Keeled Scales

June 12, 2024

It’s rough out there for lots of indie rock bands, but Austin’s Good Looks have really been through the shit. The day after they released their 2022 debut, Bummer Year , guitarist Jake Ames was nearly killed in a hit-and-run. The band put off touring while he slowly recovered, and when they did finally hit the road, their van caught fire and they lost everything: gear, instruments, laptops, merch, personal effects, everything . A less committed group might have taken either of these tragedies as a sign from the universe, but to their credit Good Looks are a foolhardy lot. While they don’t address those trials on their follow-up, Lived Here for a While , they play like their lives depend on it.

Lived Here for a While views the world from a blazing tour van. These songs aren’t just about what they see out on the road, but what they leave behind. Lovers grow distant, friends fade away, cities expand beyond recognition. “This used to be a Black neighborhood,” frontman Tyler Jordan exclaims on “White Out”, and few songwriters could make gentrification sound so deftly (or wittily: “Look out! They’re jogging! and they’re bringing their dogs with ’em!”). Whenever they tour, they never return to exactly where they left, which churns up a sense of unease in these songs: The tempos are just a little too fast; the guitars bypass jangle and head straight for the jitters.

Too often, indie self-awareness can come across as self-regarding and off-putting, like a novel about how hard it is to be a novelist. How many listeners can relate to tales of long hauls and empty venues? To their credit, Good Looks never whine about their fortunes, nor do they sound like they’re playing exclusively to other touring indie rock bands. Jordan makes it all relatable, as though touring were no different than any other low-paying gig in late-capitalist America. And he knows that lovers and spouses typically take the brunt of any artist’s frustrations. On “Self-destructor,” it’s disappointing to hear him criticize a woman for not feeling music as deeply as he does, but songs like “If It’s Gone” and especially “Desert” are distinguished by their generosity toward their subjects. Jordan apologizes rather than throws blame, and hopes it’ll make him a better man. As he sings on “Vaughn,” “Not every single lover has gotta be a sad song.”

Jordan was singing about these subjects on Bummer Year , but these new songs are more acute in their angst, more vivid in their arrangements, more volatile in their performances. As resourceful a songwriter as Jordan may be—with a casual lyricism that can turn a plainspoken phrase into a lighter-raising chorus—Good Looks were never merely his backing band. Racing through “Self-destructor” and churning up drama in “Why Don’t You Believe Me?,” they take the curves a little too fast, but the rhythm section’s taut krautrock beats keep all tires on the pavement. And Ames always has a punchy riff on hard, or a trenchant guitar tone, or a blast of feedback to bolster Jordan’s vocals or wryly undercut him. Self-referential yet also self-critical, they play every song like it’s an argument for why they’re playing that song.

There’s a sharp desperation to Good Looks’ headlong heartland rock, as though they might be trying to outrun something. “I keep driving around, to try to make some strangers love me,” Jordan sings on “Can You See Me Tonight?,” and the line perfectly sums up the Sisyphean life of a touring band. Then he adds the kicker: “By the end of tonight, I’ll sing myself hoarse and I’ll still feel empty.” Without romanticizing their lives, they do manage to find something meaningful in that pursuit, even if it’s just another song to stave off the darkness.

Going to Europe This Summer? So Are All the Swifties

By Stephanie McNeal

swifties

A version of this article originally appeared in Glamour .

Chelsea Nicholson had daydreamed about going to France, but before this week she had never left the US. When she describes how her bucket-list trip—a multiday jaunt through Paris with stops in Lyon, Giverny, Versaille, and Normandy—came to fruition, it feels appropriate for her to do so using Taylor Swift lyrics.

“What if I told you none of it was accidental, and that Lyon chose me?” she tells me over email.

Nicholson, who lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin , has already seen the Eras Tour (in Chicago last June), but as a lifelong Swiftie (she even has a lyric tattooed on her biceps) she was dying to see it again, describing the show as a “life-changing” experience that’s carried her through the last several months.

“When the second leg of her tour was announced, I knew I needed to get that feeling back, so I signed up for all three US locations, as well as Paris and Lyon,” she says. “At the time, signing up for the France shows was more for fun than anything, just to see if I would actually get picked.” After enduring the grueling Ticketmaster debacle that faced fans seeking tickets for the US legs, Nicholson thought her chances were small. But to her surprise, she was able to get tickets for the show in Lyon, a city in France’s Rhîne region—smaller than Paris—known as the country’s gastronomic capital. It was the sign she needed to finally take the plunge and book what she calls her Wildest Dreams vacation to celebrate her 40th birthday.

Fine people of Europe —gird your loins and get your “Blank Space” ready. After spending most of 2023 galloping through the US, the American Swifties are now conquering Europe. Like an invading army landing on the continent’s shores, the fandom is rolling from town to town in country after country in a blaze of glitter, friendship bracelets, and red lipstick. Their goal? Following Swift around the globe and catching the Eras Tour, which boasts a newly updated Tortured Poets Department –infused set list for the international Taylor’s Version.

Like Nicholson, some Swifties heading abroad have never left the US before. Some aimed for a certain country to visit when plotting their Eras-cation, and other picked their destination based on whatever show they got tickets for. Parents are bringing their kids on lavish Swiftie-centered European extravaganzas; daughters are bringing their mothers on a bonding trip of a lifetime. One Vanity Fair staffer even tells me she incorporated the show into her honeymoon in Scotland . A Glamour contributor saw the show for the second time in Paris.

The reasons why Swifties are choosing to see the show abroad vary. Many swear that even with the round-trip flights to Europe and the hotel accommodations, attending Eras across the pond is cheaper than securing one of the highly coveted US tour tickets, so it made economic sense. And for those who lost the Hunger Games –esque Ticketmaster lottery to see Swift stateside, the renewed chance was too good to pass up.

Taylor Swift performing onstage during night four of The Eras Tour at La Defense on May 12, 2024 in Paris, France.

“I lived vicariously watching friends attend [Eras] and quite literally cried because I thought I was not going to be able to see her live,” Sanna Root, a 50-year-old Swiftie from Florida , tells me. “When tickets were on sale for the new dates in the US, I tried again to get a code and was waitlisted. I did the same for Europe and we were able to get tickets to the concert in Lyon.”

For Root, it felt like kismet.

“Visiting France was one of the destinations my family wanted to visit, so I used Taylor’s concert as an additional excuse to plan our summer vacation,” she says. “I figured, what better? A European vacation with a purpose.” She took her 21- and 18-year-old stepdaughters, or as she refers to them, bonus daughters, with her to the show, and the trio is then heading to to Paris and Burgundy .

Others have already seen the show and want to go back for more. Kristin Luna, a 41-year-old Swiftie from Nashville , has seen the concert twice, but when she realized the Lyon date aligned with her already planned vacation to see the Roland-Garros (the French Open) tennis tournament in France with her mother, she jumped on it.

“In the end, within 20 minutes of the sale starting, I had two floor tickets with VIP access that cost us much less than a single resale ticket for nosebleeds would have in the US,” she says, noting that this concert will be even more special with her mom as her date.

“My 74-year-old mom not only introduced me to Taylor 17 years ago but also sparked my love for travel as a child ,” she says. “I would love to take one of my five nieces. They’re all incredibly jealous of our trip. But my mom has always done so much for me and given me the world that it’s fitting I get to take her on this experience.”

And just as in America, local business owners and travel companies are taking notice of all the friendship-bracelet-clad masses on their shores—and seeing dollar signs . After Swift single-handedly helped raise the economic profile of cities she stopped at in the US, generating an estimated $10 billion of revenue , everyone wants in on the gold rush. Especially because, let’s face it, some of the first-time travelers from the US may need a little help.

“A lot of the Americans who are coming could not point out Lyon on a map,” Caroline Conner Fazeli, an expat from California who now lives in the French city, tells me. “They’ve never heard of it. They don’t know anything about it. They’re coming here because it’s where they were able to get tickets. And I want them to at least experience a little bit of it because it’s such a wonderful place and it’s so off the radar.”

Fazeli, who has lived abroad for more than a decade, has her own business hosting wine tours in Lyon, as well as running an Instagram account dedicated to wine and travel. When she realized Swift was coming to her corner of France, she sensed it would be big.

“It’s just an unmissable opportunity,” she says. “I was thinking, What am I going to do? It would just be so stupid if I didn’t do anything, when I have this huge opportunity to really raise up the numbers of my business.”

Fazeli ended up throwing two pre-parties featuring a drag brunch and transportation to the shows on June 2 and 3, the dates Swift played in Lyon.

“I'm definitely going to sell out 200 spots per brunch,” Fazeli tells me. “And we’re working with Lyon’s best drag queens, which is pretty cool.”

She also threw a garden blowout at a French chateau on June 4, just for fun.

“I was like, Why don’t we throw a castle party for the Swifties? Because Swifties are crazy and they want to do all this fun stuff,” she says.

It’s not just local businesses—travel companies as big as Marriott are jumping aboard the Swiftie-cation train. A spokesperson for Marriott Bonvoy tells me the hotel chain is going all in on Eras, for which it is a touring sponsor in select cities. The brand is not only offering packages members can purchase via points to see Swift but also offering various sweepstakes, like their newly launched Mobile Check In sweepstakes , for fans to enter to win the chance to see Swift both stateside and abroad in places like Stockholm , Madrid , and Vancouver .

“My dad was on the Marriott Bonvoy Moments website every Wednesday trying to get one of the Moments packages in any city,” Alex O’Conner, tells me. “He finally got one in Stockholm and gave it to me in a gift bag on my birthday."

And Contiki, a company that plans group trips for young adult travelers, launched a whole Taylor-themed tour to coincide with Eras Tour’s European dates. They can’t get you tickets, one of the company’s “Swiftie tour managers,” Ruby Stevens, tells me, but are providing everything else you could possibly need.

“One thing we tried to do is leverage the destination she talks about in her songs,” she says. “So for instance, in London , the trip managers will be able to share destinations that she mentions in the song, what to go see, Camden Market, all of that stuff.”

Fazeli also established herself as a sort of tour guide for Americans before the concert in Lyon, starting a Facebook group for the concert that ballooned to more than 17,000 members. In it she shared tips like how to get to the show, where to stay, and advice such as “A little ‘bonjour’ goes a long way.” She’s also been coaxing Swifties to drop some of their Yankee tendencies. Like, guys, you really don’t need a car .

“People are like, ‘Oh, how do we drive in Lyon?’” she says. “I’m like, ‘Ugh. Chill, breathe, eat, and enjoy your time here.’”

As is common in Swift-themed online spaces, the group soon morphed from logistics and questions to the collective sharing of emotions and excitement about the experience. Fanatics are nearly universally emotionally invested in both Swift and her music, and for many, the chance to embark on such a big excursion is extra special because it’s tied to her.

Some have planned their trips to honor loved ones. One member of Fazeli’s group, Rosell Novelliere, traveled with her brother Alex, himself a mega-Swiftie, to the June 2 concert as a tribute to their mother, who died last year. They brought along Rosell’s husband and two young children, as well as some family friends, to the show.

Rosell tells me that none of the family members were able to purchase tickets in the US, so her brother went on the hunt to get a ticket for an international show.

“My mom, her nurse, my brother, and I all laughed at the lengths he was going to,” she says.

After their mother passed away last summer, it all came together. Rosell was able to snag tickets on what would have been their mom’s 63rd birthday.

“This trip is a way to honor our mother and to say goodbye to her,” the siblings tell me. “We know that it will be a very emotional trip, but we are hoping to make a memorable one that will bring some healing.”

Nicholson put it simply when asked what the trip meant to her. “ Le monde entier. ‘The whole world.’ Seriously, pinch me because I must be dreaming,” she says.
