Pro cycling kits 2024: What the WorldTour teams are wearing

A run-down of all the colours among the top-level teams for the upcoming season

With the New Year upon us, we're getting a clear picture of the sea of colour that will make up the pro pelotons in 2024.

Most teams have now unveiled their kits for the upcoming season, with some sticking to their 2023 designs but a fair few mixing things up with new designs.

Ineos Grenadiers ’ new kit , which is very similar to their old kit but made by a new supplier, was leaked online by their own rider , Egan Bernal, although most PR launch campaigns have gone off without a hitch – the most eye-catching being Julian Alaphilippe’s Celine Dion rendition for Soudal Quick-Step ’s get-up.

The Quick-Step kit is even less of a departure than Ineos’, with SD Worx and UAE Team Emirates among the other big teams to keep their tweaks to a minimum. As for the bigger changes, Bahrain Victorious have gone white, Jayco AlUla have had a complete redesign and Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale have ditched the infamous brown shorts.

As for those still to land, we are still waiting on the full reveal for the new dsm-firmenich PostNL number, which looks set to be white, blue and orange.

In this piece, we’ve gathered all the kits across the men’s and women’s WorldTours, all in one place, and we’ll keep it updated whenever a new one drops.

AG Insurance-Soudal

There's no significant change here, although we do apparently have "more playful" lines between the blue and white, and flowers "in motion" on the sleeves and sides.

Alpecin-Deceuninck

No new kit has broken cover so far for the Belgian team of the world champion Mathieu van der Poel .

Arkéa-B&B Hotels

The French team caught the most attention with their new kit thanks to a slightly strange Excalibur launch, complete with Arnaud Démare brandishing a sword. This jersey, which welcomes a new sponsor in B&B Hotels, is similar to 2023 but does contain some striking Excalibur-themed collage panelling.

Astana Qazaqstan

Astana's new kit is an evolution of their Tour de France special edition from 2023. The Pringle patterning is gone, replaced with a more contained section of that so-called "veins of mineral stones" design from last year's Tour.

Bahrain Victorious

Bahrain Victorious have played around with white jerseys at the Tour de France in the past, and they liked it so much they've made it their main kit. The old kit was red, black, and orange, so this presents a fresher, less obviously fossil-fuelled look.

Bora-Hansgrohe

Primož Roglič's new team are back with Sportful after a two-year hiatus and while they're sticking with their deep green base, they've added sections of pale green, which seems to have divided opinion so far.

Canyon-SRAM

The women's team have produced some of the most striking kits in the sport in recent years, and for 2024, they have not strayed from this trend. After using their previous design for two successive seasons, Canyon-SRAM have decided to shake things up ahead of the new campaign, with their new strip unveiled just ahead of the women's Santos Tour Down Under.

Remaining with their tried-and-tested colours of blue, pink and purple - amongst others - Canyon-SRAM's new livery does away with some of the motifs that scattered the old design, and instead focuses on the 'harmonic riffs' of races.

Essentially, geometric patterns now dominate the jersey both front and back, designed to reflect the sounds of the peloton as it races along. We think this will remain one of the most popular kits in the world.

Ceratizit-WNT

The team haven't fully revealed their kit yet, releasing only a shot from the back and a blurred-out front-on shot, but it looks pretty similar to the blue and red design of 2023.

With Decathlon going all-in with the AG2R team, fellow French WorldTour squads are switching away from Van Rysel and forming a new partnership with Mobel Sport, although there's not much at all new about this 2024 design.

Decathlon's in-house brand Van Rysel is now with AG2R as part of the new sponsorship, and while they've retained the diagonal logo-ing, there's a new white and blue colour scheme. However, what caused the most outcry was the death of the brown shorts, long-derided but already strangely missed.

The new dsm-firmenich PostNL jersey has proved one of the most divisive of the new campaign, with the Dutch squad making a total revamp of their look with the addition of PostNL as co-title sponsor.

Gone is the dark blue and black design, and in comes an eye-catching white, blue and orange attire that looks set to make the team stand out from the pack this season. Orange is, of course, the colour of PostNL, whilst the white base is complemented by light blue up top.

The bib shorts will be navy for the team and the old dsm logo is gone from the front of the jersey, to the delight of most. Whether you love it or hate it, you can't deny there is a real sense of fun in this new strip for 2024.

EF Pro Cycling

EF Pro Cycling unveiled their new pink and yellow jersey on 4 January with a host of colourful pictures taken at their recent winter training camp. The get-together was the biggest in the team's history, owing to the addition of EF Education-Cannondale women's team to the EF Education-EasyPost men's side.

The team's new jersey remains primarily pink, but is adorned with bright yellow graphics which are in ode to the team's life on the road, as well as their European base in Girona, Spain.

Fenix-Deceuninck

We're yet to see anything new from the team that's run by the same people as the men's Alpecin-Deceuninck outfit.

There are subtle but striking changes for FDJ-SUEZ's fresh look for 2024. Their jersey remains predominantly blue with red sprawling the left-hand shoulder and the bottom of the jersey fading to the black of the bib shorts.

However, a series of navy diagonals break up the lighter blue that the team is known for, rather than adopting more of a simple fade design that the team used in 2023. This makes for a much more impressive kit, in our opinion. French bank card network Cartes Bancaires will also be pleased, as their sponsorship extends from the jersey's shoulders to also featuring on the front of the top.

Groupama-FDJ

Like the women's FDJ team – although the two are not co-owned – the men's team had one of the most popular kits in 2023, trading white for a dark blue, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see them stick in 2024.

Human Powered Health

Human Powered Health have released a kit for 2024 that they are calling a "new refreshed look", but to our mind, it looks pretty much the same as it did in 2023. Orange forms the base colour of the jersey, with hues of red and purple forming gradient splodges across the design. It leans darker than the 2023 version, but all in all the American squad are sticking to a familiar visual identity.

Ineos Grenadiers

This one was leaked by Egan Bernal on Instagram, which perhaps made it seem a little uninspiring when the announcement did come. There's a change of supplier – GOBIK in for Bioracer – and there's more orange and more fade, but the overall look feels similar to 2023.

Intermarché-Wanty

The Belgian team wore three different jerseys in 2023, with special editions for the Giro and Tour – but they have settled on a brand-new design for 2024. After their main effort for 2023 had the look of a white jersey that had innocuously been damaged by knocked-over paint cans, the team have opted for a far more geometric design for the new campaign.

Well-known social media user and graphic designer Stycle Design has been drafted in by Intermarché-Wanty once again to design the jersey, whilst the team has agreed a new partnership with Belgian company Verge Sport to manufacture the kit.

White, fluorescent yellow and dark blue remain the team's core colours, with the right-hand side of the jersey predominantly yellow and dark blue patches colouring the white left-hand side.

As is the norm with this WorldTeam, multiple sponsors adorn the jersey, and it is Fantini who has been offered a far more prominent role in 2024, taking centre stage on the lower half of the top.

Liv AlUla Jayco

Liv Racing TeqFind and Jayco AlUla have merged over the winter, bringing an end to the former's spell as a WorldTeam, and bolstering the ranks available to Jayco AlUla. As we discussed in our Team Talk analysis , both squads struggled in 2023 and uniting forces should not only improve Jayco AlUla's WorldTeam, but has also allowed GreenEDGE Cycling to launch a new women's development side in the sport's lower tier.

Both women's teams will be named Liv AlULA Jayco and with a new name comes a fresh kit - which is a drastic change from their 2023 effort. Gone is the white and blue design and emboldened remains Liv's trademark purple/aubergine.

The front of the jersey sees the bottom half in an orange shade to depict the sands of the Australian outback, which changes to purple for the Liv logo and fades to white at the very top of the jersey. The sleeves, meanwhile, are a dark navy, as are the sides of the jersey and accompanying bib shorts.

Liv and AlUla take prominence as the main title sponsors, whilst Jayco settles for a smaller slot above the right collarbone. Low-quality graphics had leaked of the jersey in the weeks ahead of its release, but the general consensus amongst the public is that this is a jersey that certainly looks better in person.

The new kit for the men's Jayco AlUla outfit, who are of course a UCI WorldTeam in their own right, was unveiled alongside that of the women's on 1 January. It sees the men wear a kit with the same design as the women's teams, only with the aubergine of Liv Cycling swapped out for the light blue of Jayco - as was seen on the team's 2023 kit.

Jayco AlUla will sport a fresh look for 2024

One other notable difference between the sides is that the men will ride on Giant Bikes, as opposed to the Liv bikes that the women's teams will use. Liv is indeed a conglomerate company of Giant Bikes .

Lidl only joined as a title sponsor mid-way through the year, so it's no surprise the new kit that was cooked up then will be back for a full season of racing. Whereas they'd previously worn separate kits, the men's and women's teams are now wearing the same.

There's no big change for the Spanish team, who are sticking with a blue jersey with the big M. It does come with a little more excitement, though, with some artistic patterning as it fades towards the shorts.

Movistar's kit for 2024

Roland have parted ways with Israel-Premier Tech for 2024 and with that, the old blue-and-white design is put to rest. Instead, Roland returns to a base colour of ruby red, which the team used in the years before Israel-Premier Tech's involvement. Simple but arguably stylish, the new Roland kit also confirms the involvement of Pinarello as the team's bike manufacturer.

The dominant women's team have stuck with the same colour palette and overall design but this feels slightly brighter and bolder compared to 2023.

Soudal Quick-Step

Revealed to much fanfare, amid strobe lighting and a full-hearted Celine Dion lip-sync from a two-time world champ, the Soudal Quick-Step kit, also designed by Stycle Design, is very much business as usual.

Visma-Lease a Bike

The Dutch team are changing names and sponsors, but not colours, sticking to the yellow and black scheme as they try and establish it as something of a team brand identity. However, it's definitely a brighter shade of yellow than previously, complete with honeycomb patterning that's part of that 'killer bee' branding. It's the same kit for the men's and women's teams.

UAE Team Emirates

The main change here is the removal of black from the jersey, the running joke being Tadej Pogačar wanting to go fully white now he's too old for the white jersey classification at the Tour de France. There's also a new design element with red, green, and black stripes at the base of the jersey.

What's the difference between ProConti and World Tour teams?

Pro Cycling Bets

You may have heard the term "pro-conti" thrown around the punter's peloton with respect to certain teams such as Israel Premier-Tech or Lotto Destiny. The term is used to describe what are now known as Pro teams in the men's division of cycling, the level below the World Tour. Colloquially it's used to describe all teams below the level of World Tour.

How does the breakdown occur? Roughly speaking, there are three levels of teams in decreasing order of importance: World Tour > Pro Teams > Continental Teams.

In the men's division, there are 18 teams that are granted a World Tour "license" by the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale).

The number of Pro Teams and Continental Teams isn't capped, but teams at the corresponding level must meet certain stipulations to maintain their level's license. For example, a Pro Team must have

20 riders, 3 team managers and 5 other staff (paramedical assistants, mechanics, etc.) on a full-time basis

Whereas a Continental team must have

Minimum 10 riders

We're glossing over the details, such as the cost of the license and the ranking of the riders necessary to qualify for the minimum count (you can't have your granddad on your Continental team to fill out the 10th slot...that is unless he's Valverde)

Teams race other teams on their own circuits - similar to how Formula 2 teams race other Formula 2 teams, and Formula 3 teams race other Formula 3 teams. But unlike Formula 1, teams from the circuit below have the ability to be granted wildcards race slots at the circuit level above them (so a Pro team may be granted a slot to race at the Tour de France - which is a World Tour level only race).

World Tour teams have plenty of stipulations that they're required to meet, of which the most arduous is that they must attend all World Tour races. Even if they don't want to. They have to send riders to the race, and must plan their calendars accordingly. Thankfully World Tour teams can have 30 riders, and if they want certain riders fresh for certain key races during the year, they can send their B squad riders to race B if they want their A squad for race A.

How does this all matter for punters? World Tour status is reassessed on a tri-annual (every three years) basis based on the UCI points awarded at races. Certain Pro teams may move up to World Tour and certain World Tour teams may move down to Pro level (similar to the Premier and Championship leagues for football in the UK). This may dictate a teams motivation levels at certain races. A team such as Israel Premier-Tech may be heavily motivated to place at a certain one-day classic to garner the UCI points and re-achieve World Tour status - whereas another World Tour team who's safely cruising along like Jumbo Visma may have sent their C squad because they had to attend the race and don't really have any skin in the game.

While this may not affect the race result all that much, all riders generally want to win, it does affect the ability of those riders to win if they have an A squad behind them compared to a C squad.

First teams announced for 2024 Tour of Britain Women!

The first teams have been announced for the 2024 Tour of Britain which will pass through Wrexham in June.

All six of Britain’s female UCI Continental teams have been announced as the first teams confirmed for the inaugural event.

Taking place from Thursday 6 June to Sunday 9 June, the Tour of Britain Women will feature four challenging and exciting stages, beginning in Welshpool, Wrexham, Wales and culminating in Leigh, Greater Manchester where the winner will be crowned.

Alba Development Road Team; DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK; Doltcini-O’Shea; Hess Cycling Team; Lifeplus-Wahoo and Pro-Noctis – 200° Coffee – Hargreaves Contracting complete the line-up of exciting British UCI Continental Teams set to take on the international stage race this June.

Returning to the Tour of Britain Women will be Lifeplus-Wahoo, Doltcini-O’Shea and DAS-Handsling. All have been competitive in the Women’s Tour, with British rider Alice Barnes finishing sixth for Lifeplus Wahoo, previously known as Drops, in the GC of the 2017 edition.

DAS-Hutchinson-Brother’s Beckie Storrie finished on the podium as the Best British Rider in the 2022 Women’s Tour before progressing to WorldTour Team dsm firmenich PostNL.

Both elite teams in 2023, Alba Road Development Team and Pro-Noctis – 200° Coffee – Hargreaves Contracting stepped up to UCI Continental status for this season.

Hess Cycling Team have switched to a British UCI Continental licence, further increasing the number of talented British Continental teams on the 2024 domestic circuit.

Lifeplus Wahoo have so far been dominating the National Road Series – the premier road racing series in the UK for men and women – with wins at both the CiCLE Classic and the Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix. Alba Development Road Team secured second place finishes at both the CiCLE Classic and the Women’s East Cleveland Classic, with Hess completing the podium with third in East Cleveland.

British Cycling Events Managing Director, Jonathan Day, said: “We are delighted to be able to announce that all six British UCI Continental teams are the first to be confirmed for the 2024 Tour of Britain Women.

“It’s great that the British based UCI Continental teams have got the opportunity to race in such a prestigious event on home soil, given their commitment to the domestic racing season. We’ve seen first-hand how exciting these teams are to watch and know that fans can expect a real spectacle next month.”

All four stage routes for the 2024 Tour of Britain Women have now been announced and can be found on the British Cycling website.

Further team announcements for the 2024 Tour of Britain Women will be announced in due course.

The major event will head to Wrexham on June 7 for the start and end of stage two – with a route that will see competitors take off from the city centre before taking in the stunning sights of Wrexham and neighbouring counties.

The start and finish line will both be located on Chester Street (outside Crown Buildings).

Cyclists are expected to leave at approx. 11:00am via Powell Road roundabout and onto Chester Road
Cyclists are expected to return at approx. 3:15pm via Tuttle Street, Yorke Street and onto Chester Street
The staged area will be on the Library car park
The Tour Village and additional stalls/activities will be on Llwyn Isaf
Crowd barriers will be placed along either side of the road from the Powell Road roundabout down to Tuttle Street.

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration said: “It’s all building up to be a great event in June and the race will give many the opportunity to witness and cheer on the cyclists, be that in the city centre for the start and end stages or as they pass through our communities.

“Please come to show your support and give them a warm Welsh welcome.”

Welcome to the Cyclingnews WorldTour bikes guide for 2024, a complete and comprehensive round-up of the bikes and tech used by the men's UCI WorldTour Teams for the upcoming cycling season. Be sure to check out the Women's WorldTour Bikes too.

The offseason seems to get shorter and shorter each year, we barely seem to have chance to draw breath here at Cyclingnews before the racing gets underway again . If you fancy a recap of 2023's tech happenings before we go again for 2024, head over to our roundup of the most interesting tech stories of the year, but we're already looking ahead, planning for January's early-season kick-off at the Tour Down Under in Australia.

As such, we've been doing our homework on all the team kit changes, sponsors and technical partners for the 2024 season as news and announcements begin to gather pace. We probably won't have the complete picture until early January after all the official team launches, but we've rounded up everything we know - or can deduce with confidence - below.

The sheer speed WorldTour road races are run off at these days is astounding. With racing action opening up from further and further out during races it seems. Advances in training science and power meter technology also mean there is an incredible strength in depth within the men's WorldTour peloton.

Any team or rider not using optimised bikes and equipment is going to be at a disadvantage given the high level and as such more and more teams are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to bikes and kit. Losing a handful of watts due to exposed cabling or slow tyres isn't an option for WorldTour racers, just see Ineos Grenadiers' aero transponder hack for proof.

We saw bikes got heavier when teams first switched to disc brakes several years ago. In 2023 however, it felt like several brands got a lot closer to the UCI 6.8kg weight limit again with lightweight, disc-equipped, aero-optimised bikes. If you believe all of the tech info and marketing news, today's race bikes are just as, if not more aero than the hyper aero race bikes of only a handful of years ago, but they are one again right on the nose of the UCI minimum weight limit.

Couple this with aero-optimised everything, waxed drivetrains, 1x chainsets for road stages not to mention some of the most aerodynamic cycling kit on the market and you get incredibly fast average speeds for most races these days.

We expect 2024 to build on these tech trends and expect teams to keep up their unrelenting quest for the best possible blend of weight, aero and speed. 2024 is also an Olympic year and we may well see some extra special kit from various manufacturers.

Of the 18 WorldTour men's teams for 2024, there are two new frame supplier changes with Groupama-FDJ switching from Lapierre after 22 long years to Wilier Triestina , and Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team as it will be known saying goodbye to BMC and switching to Decathlon's own brand Van Rysel .

That latter move sees Decathlon's bikes back in the top flight after a long lay off, and sees BMC outside of the top flight for the first time in a decade (albeit still working with Swiss squad Tudor). The rest of the men's WorldTour bike brands remain the same but there are some equipment changes which are outlined below.

Another development worth mentioning toward the end of this season was the release of the new Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 which some of the top riders in the peloton will be riding on next year, transitioning from the SL7 model. Like last year, there aren't too many big kit changes for next year, although there's still a little time for some changes to come.

Ineos Grenadiers are one team that have switched kit suppliers , moving from BioRacer kit to Spanish brand Gobik in what's been called a long-term partnership. The linked article above also gives some insights into just how big a commitment supplying a whole team with kit is. We also saw Ineos partnering with Castore for off-bike wear last year and believe this remains unchanged.

Astana have also said goodbye to Giordana as they partner with Biemme for the 2024 race season

There is also more change for the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team who retain clothing provider Rosti but will use Van Rysel helmets and sunglasses as part of the team's new equipment deal.

Sportful also re-enters the WorldTour with its old team Bora-Hansgrohe after the German team jumped ship to British brand LeCol ahead of the 2022 season,

A key talking point this year is the apparent absence of Campagnolo from the WorldTour peloton for 2024. We speculated this time last year on whether we would see the brand in the peloton for 2024 and at the moment, their absence looks likely after AG2R switched from BMC to Van Rysel bikes and Campagnolo to Shimano equipment.

"Campagnolo can confirm that its partnership with the AG2R Citröen Team has come to an end, and that it has amicably parted ways with the team." the brand said in a statement to Cyclingnews , confirming news we all knew following the team's Shimano-equipped bike launch last month. "There is currently no announcement to make about Campagnolo's partnerships in professional road racing for the 2024 season."

We can't account for a couple of seasons so aren't 100% sure, but this could be the first time in the brand's history (bar a couple of very early years) where its equipment hasn't been used in the top flight of racing. Even if not, it's still a notable situation to find the brand in.

We also have confirmed that Bora-Hansgrohe will switch from Shimano to SRAM groupsets. We understand Bora used to purchase their own groupsets from Shimano, rather than any direct sponsorship deal, so perhaps SRAM has a better price or has stepped in with a deal to provide equipment.

We also saw UAE Emirates start to use some alternate componentry in 2023 in the form of Carbon-Ti chainrings and disc brake rotors instead of their stock Dura-Ace equipment. The UAE Team Emirates outfit also buys its own groupsets, so has no sponsor obligations to adhere to here, and have seen images of the team running the same components on their new bikes.

The biggest changes for next year are taking place at Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team as they will be known from January.

The team will be aboard a completely new equipment package for 2024, saying goodbye to BMC and Campagnolo Equipment. The riders will use Van Rysel road and time trial bikes, Shimano Dura-Ace equipment and SwissSide wheels. For existing riders on the team that's a lot of changes to get used to before the racing kicks off.

Astana Qazaqstan Team

Despite some speculation, Cyclingnews understands that Astana are staying with Wilier and have seen press shots from a December training camp of the team on Wilier Filante SLR bikes. Team riders will be able to choose from the Zero and Filante SLR models.

After using Corima and HED wheels for the 2023 season, the team announced they would be using Vision wheels for the 2024 season.

Bahrain Victorious

Bikes : Merida Reacto, Merida Scultura, Merida Warp TT
Groupset : Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 Disc
Wheels : Vision
Clothing : Alé
Finishing Kit : FSA, Vision

There's also little change at Bahrain Victorious. The team did start the 2021 campaign in Nalini clothing before they switched to Alé during the summer, but that new partner remains along with the use of Merida Bikes, Shimano groupsets, and Vision/FSA componentry.

The team rolled out a new paint job for the Tour de France which featured a lot more white and paid homage to Bahrain's pearl fishing industry.

Also worth inclusion here despite being not road-specific is Matej Mohoric's World Championship-winning Merida gravel bike from early October as the road star made a very successful transition to the rough stuff.

Bora-Hansgrohe

There is change afoot at Bora Hansgrohe for 2024, firstly in the shape of new star signing Primož Roglič who signed for the team and leaves Jumbo Visma after a long tenure.

The other significant piece of equipment news for the team is the switch from Shimano to SRAM equipment with Roglič himself spotted with a Sram Red AXS-equipped Bora Tarmac SL8 ahead of the new season. The kit itself also features more green this year and some lighter green in particular on the right shoulder.

The team has also changed from Wahoo to Hammerhead Karoo 2 computers for the 2024 season. They have also signed a deal with KOO eyewear which is owned by Kask for 2024. For the moment, the rest of the team's equipment looks to be staying the same.

Cofidis look to be sticking with their current setup which is a largely French affair with Look frames and Corima wheels. We were speculating on the identity of their new Look frames this year. But it became apparent this was the 795 Blade frameset module which took a spectacular win at the Tour in 2023 thanks to Victor Lafay.

EF Education-Easypost

Bikes : Cannondale SuperSix Evo LAB 71, SystemSix, SuperSlice (TT)
Wheels : Vision
Clothing : Rapha
Computers : TBC

For the most part, it appears EF Education-Easypost are sticking with what they have in 2024. Continuing aboard Cannondale bikes, Vision/FSA components, and Prologo saddles. It's a setup that feels very familiar now.

The team did start racing the fourth generation of the SuperSix Evo in March and we expect to see them racing on the top-flight LAB 71 bikes in 2024.

The team's opinion-dividing limited edition team kits have gained the team plenty of exposure throughout previous seasons. We can probably expect to see more of the same on at least one of this year's grand tours.

Groupama-FDJ

Wheels : Shimano C35, C50, C60
Tyres: Continental Grand Prix 5000 TT
Finishing Kit : Lapierre

FDJ said goodbye to Lapierre at the end of this season after 22 long years. It's confirmed they will race on Wilier bikes for 2024 and we have already had a sneak peek of the potential new bike.

So far, aside from the new frame supplier, the team's equipment package looks to be the same as last year with a Dura Ace equipment package and wheels. Though we may know more after the official team launch.

Ineos Grenadiers

Wheels : Shimano (Princeton Carbonworks & Aerocoach will be present as non-sponsored additions)

Bike-wise, not much appears to have altered yet for Ineos Grenadiers. They are still using the same mix of equipment providers and have developed the Pinarello Dogma F frame with Pinarello over many years. They use a mix of Shimano, Princeton Carbonworks, and Aerocoach wheels for road and TT disciplines. The team after a long relationship with Fizik announced a new partnership with Prologo and will use the brand's saddles on and off road in 2024.

Video and images have appeared online of the team at its December training camp the bike's paint schemes look almost identical to last year.

The team also switched clothing suppliers in 2024, waving goodbye to Bio Racer and launching a new 'long term' partnership with Gobik, whose design is a little different with a notable change being the left-right fade and odd-coloured arms on long-sleeve items.

Intermarché - Wanty

Intermarché - Wanty dropped the 'circus' title sponsor for 2024 but stick with all of their current sponsors and equipment. Cube, Shimano and Newmen make up the package for the WorldTour team.

The team changed from Nalini to Verge cycling kit for 2024. The kit features fluorescent yellow in abundance and we're hoping to see both Taco Van der Hoorn and Biniam Girmay return to their former flourishes following their respective battles with concussion.

Alpecin-Deceuninck

Finishing Kit : Canyon / Selle Italia

Alpecin-Deceuninck might have only graduated to the WorldTour in 2023, but the team has had a similar equipment package for a few years now.

Not much appears to be changing for 2024, with the team retaining all of their sponsors. But we can probably expect a new custom-painted Canyon Aeroad for reigning World Road Race Champion Mathieu van der Poel as well as a host of rainbow kit.

Team Visma | Lease a bike

We don't know if there are any official changes for the all-conquering soon-to-be renamed Team Visma | Lease A Bike squad for 2024. The upcoming team launch may tell us more.

The team did have a lot of new equipment to get used to last season after switching from Shimano to SRAM, to Wahoo Speedplay pedals, and Nimbl shoes. Elsewhere they use Cervelo bikes and Reserve wheels in a range of depths.

The team is widely regarded as the tip of the pyramid now when it comes to marginal gains and optimisation, notably experimenting with 1x drivetrains in road races the 2023 season. We wouldn't be surprised to see a few more tweaks here and there as Jonas Vingegaard aims for a third straight Tour de France.

Arkéa B&B Hotels

Bikes : Bianchi Oltre RC, Specialissima, Aquila (TT)
Groupset : Shimano Dura-Ace Di2
Tyres: Vittoria Metron - 45 and 60

After rolling out a new Bianchi equipment package for 2023, Arkea looks to be sticking to the same frames from Bianchi for 2024.

There is some change in the form of a different team name with the team changing to Arkéa - B&B Hotels. We also expect them to have the use of the new Bianchi Specialissima lightweight bike, which we first saw at the Vuelta, and have seen the team training on already this December.

They will use Shimano Dura-Ace groupsets and wheels which the Arkea riders will be familiar with, and notably switch from Shimano to Vision wheels for road races as well as from Continental to Vittoria tyres

Movistar Team

Bikes : Canyon Aeroad CFR, Ultimate CFR, Speedmax CFR (TT)
Groupset : SRAM Red eTap AXS
Wheels : Zipp
Clothing : Gobik / BORN
Finishing Kit : Canyon

Most things look to be staying the same at Movistar for 2024 ahead of the officical team launch and the team has had a similar package for a few years now. This means continued use of Canyon's bikes, SRAM's wireless Red eTap AXS groupsets and Zipp wheels, with saddles courtesy of Fizik and computers supplied by Garmin.

Time has come on board as a pedal sponsor for 2024. Time pedal systems are some of the lightest around. Sram own Time so the partnership makes sense. The team have also announced a new partnership for three years with Spanish brand BORN to cover all the team's leisurewear requirements off the bike.

Soudal-QuickStep

At the time of writing, everything looks to be staying the same for Soudal-QuickStep Their Specialized / Shimano package has proven successful over many seasons and seems to be a tried and tested combination.

The team will all race on Tarmac SL8 bikes next year and we have spotted a few riders on new 2024 colour scheme bikes online in the last few days.

Specialized provides more than just frames to the team, with riders using its shoes, helmets, tyres and in some cases cockpits as well. Top secret Specialized 'Project Black' prototype equipment is also out in the wild, but Specialized remains tight-lipped on all fronts.

The team has also extended its partnership with Danish company CeramicSpeed through to the end of 2024. The brand supplies the team with bottom brackets as well as bearings kits etc.

Team Jayco-AlUla

Bikes : Propel Advanced SL, TCR Advanced SL, Trinity (TT)

Saddles : Cadex
Finishing Kit : Giant

After last year's name change, the Jayco AlUla team's equipment package remains largely the same for the moment. Team colours have changed slightly with some red coming in on the lower half of the split colour way team jerseys. Giant remains the bike sponsor and provides its own Cadex wheels, Dash computers (albeit these are simply Giant-branded Stages Dash computers ) and Cadex finishing kit.

Interestingly the Propel and TCR still use an integrated seat mast which isn't something we see on many high-end road bikes anymore. IF the product cycle is anything to go by, we're expecting a new TCR in 2024, so we'll keep our eyes peeled to see if this remains.

Team DSM - Firmenich PostNL

Clothing : Nalini

Almost everything looks set to remain the same at Team DSM for 2024 ahead of their official team launch.

We do know the team will continue to ride Scott bikes until 2025. For this year at least, and likely beyond, that will also be complete with Shimano groupsets and wheels, especially as Team DSM is one of the few teams actually sponsored by Shimano, unlike others who are forced to buy it (or have it supplied by their bike sponsor).

Elsewhere, data will be handled by Wahoo as it has been since 2021. The team's clothing system is interesting, with the kit custom manufactured by Nalini, but in collaboration with DSM with the integration of the material Dyneema.

Lidl - Trek

Like last year, nothing much has changed at Lidl-Trek for 2024 thus far. The team created waves in the summer after changing names to Lidl - Trek just before the Tour de France.

Mads Pederson's custom-painted Trek Madone almost broke the internet in July too.

We know nothing that suggests the team won't continue on Trek's range of road bikes, SRAM groupsets, Bontrager components, Wahoo computers and clothing from Santini.

UAE Team Emirates

Tadej Pogacar's Colnago V4Rs stands in an underground car park

After a period of change where the team changed a lot of componentry and moved away from Campagnolo to Shimano they seem to have found an equipment setup they are happy to keep.

It looks like Pogacar and co will continue on Colnago V4Rs framesets, Dura-Ace groupsets and Enve wheels, complete with Continental tyres. Notably, the team have used Carbon Ti carbon chainrings and disc rotors and look to be doing the same next year from online training pictures.

British UCI Continental teams confirmed for 2024 Tour of Britain Women

British Cycling today announced that all six British UCI Continental teams have been confirmed for the inaugural Tour of Britain Women, set to take place from Thursday, 6th June to Sunday, 9th June. The tour will begin in Welshpool, Wales and conclude in Leigh, Greater Manchester.

The line-up of British UCI Continental teams includes Alba Development Road Team, DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK, Doltcini-O’Shea, Hess Cycling Team, Lifeplus-Wahoo, and Pro-Noctis – 200° Coffee – Hargreaves Contracting. Jonathan Day, Managing Director of British Cycling Events, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to be able to announce that all six British UCI Continental teams are the first to be confirmed for the 2024 Tour of Britain Women. It’s great that the British-based UCI Continental teams have got the opportunity to race in such a prestigious event on home soil.”

Lifeplus-Wahoo, Doltcini-O’Shea, and DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK are returning to the Tour of Britain Women, with a history of strong performances. Alice Barnes (now Alice Wood), a British rider for Lifeplus Wahoo, finished sixth in the General Classification of the 2017 Women’s Tour. Beckie Storrie from DAS-Hutchinson-Brother secured a podium finish as the Best British Rider in the 2022 Women’s Tour before moving to WorldTour Team DSM Firmenich PostNL.

Both Alba Road Development Team and Pro-Noctis – 200° Coffee – Hargreaves Contracting have transitioned to UCI Continental status this season, further enriching the competitive field. Hess Cycling Team, now holding a British UCI Continental licence, will also join the ranks of talented teams in the 2024 domestic circuit.

Lifeplus Wahoo has shown dominance in the National Road Series, winning both the CiCLE Classic and the Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix. Alba Development Road Team achieved second-place finishes at both the CiCLE Classic and the Women’s East Cleveland Classic, with Hess securing third in East Cleveland.

The 2024 Tour of Britain Women will feature four stages:

Stage 1 (Thursday 6 June 2024) : Welshpool to Llandudno
Stage 2 (Friday 7 June 2024) : Wrexham
Stage 3 (Saturday 8 June 2024) : Warrington
Stage 4 (Sunday 9 June 2024) : Greater Manchester: National Cycling Centre to Leigh

The routes for all four stages have been released now, and further team announcements will be made in due course. Jonathan Day expressed his confidence in the excitement these teams will bring, adding, “We’ve seen first-hand how exciting these teams are to watch and know that fans can expect a real spectacle next month.”

All six of britain’s female uci continental teams have today been announced as the first teams confirmed for the inaugural tour of britain women..

Taking place from Thursday 6th June to Sunday 9th June, the Tour of Britain Women will feature four challenging and exciting stages, beginning in Welshpool, Wales and culminating in Leigh, Greater Manchester where the winner will be crowned.

Alba Development Road Team; DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK; Doltcini-O'Shea; Hess Cycling Team; Lifeplus-Wahoo and Pro-Noctis - 200° Coffee - Hargreaves Contracting complete the line-up of exciting British UCI Continental Teams set to take on the international stage race this June.

Returning to the Tour of Britain Women will be Lifeplus-Wahoo, Doltcini-O'Shea and DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK. All have been competitive in the Women’s Tour, with British rider Alice Barnes finishing sixth for Lifeplus Wahoo, previously known as Drops, in the GC of the 2017 edition.

DAS-Hutchinson-Brother's Beckie Storrie finished on the podium as the Best British Rider in the 2022 Women’s Tour before progressing to WorldTour Team dsm firmenich PostNL.

Both elite teams in 2023, Alba Road Development Team and Pro-Noctis - 200° Coffee - Hargreaves Contracting stepped up to UCI Continental status for this season. Hess Cycling Team have switched to a British UCI Continental licence, further increasing the number of talented British Continental teams on the 2024 domestic circuit.

Eight days after he roasted on the hot seat for much of the day only for the maglia rosa to steal the spotlight at the last minute, Filippo Ganna was able to exact some revenge and get his time trial stage victory at the 2024 Giro d’Italia.

With just 150 meters of elevation gain, the stage certainly played into the hands of Ganna, the time trial specialist from INEOS. It was tailor made for a big performance. It was on the final climb of the Stage 7 time trial where Ganna lost crucial seconds to Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and finished second on the stage. There would be no stage victory stealing from Pog this time.

Ganna, in the Italian champion’s jersey, put down a time of 35:02 to set a strong early standard. Of course, with Pogačar, there are no guarantees. The race leader put down a solid performance—29 seconds off Ganna and enough for second on the stage, furthering his lead in the general classification.

Pogačar entered the stage with a 2:40 over second position Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe) and 2:56 over third position Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers). After the Stage 14 TT, Pogačar extended his lead to 3:41 over Thomas, who slipped into second place in the GC with a strong ride, and 3:56 over Martinez.

Julian Alaphilippe Takes Stunning Victory in Signature Style

May 16, 2024— Stage 12 turned out to be a lightning-fast stage over a hilly course with 2,200 meters of elevation, leading to some animated racing from the breakaway, chase groups, and even the peloton, where GC riders sat hoping for the race to calm down. But for 193 km, it never really did.

The victory was taken with aggression and style by two-time World Champion Julian Alaphillippe (Soudal-Quickstep). Alaphilippe was part of a huge breakaway battle that started in the Marche region, and at an average of 47 kilometers per hour, it turned out to be one of the top ten fastest stages in Giro history. Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers) finished in second, and Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was third after the chase-group sprint in Fano.

This is the Soudal-Quickstep rider’s first win since last year’s Critérium du Dauphiné and his first at a Grand Tour since 2021. The win also completes his Grand Tour stage-win set and adds to his six Tour de France stage victories and one La Vuelta a España win.

Alaphilippe launched the first of many attacks about 138 km from the finish before meeting his breakaway companion Mirco Maestri (Polti-Kometa). Their effort would hold off the chasers until Alaphilippe attacked the last ascent 11.5 km from the finish.

“I didn’t plan it. I was expecting a big group to be in the breakaway. First, I have to thank my teammates who perfectly controlled the first 60 km. I was focused on being on the front,” said the Frenchman in the post-race interview.

Alaphilippe believed he could win the stage, but made sure to continue working and hold off the chasers. “Until the last kilometer, I had to keep pushing full gas because I hear Narvaez was close behind me,” he said. “It was my dream to win a stage of the Giro.”

While Maestri would have certainly liked to finish behind a champ like Alaphilippe, the chase caught up to him on the last climb, and he went on to finish in 9th place. “He also deserved to win today. He was amazing. We collaborated super well,” said Alaphilippe.

This is how the stage went down. At 140 km to go, Alaphilippe, along with Andrea Piccolo, sparked a decisive move on an uncategorized climb, prompting a group of former stage winners to join in the action. As the breakaway materialized, Alaphilippe initiated another acceleration, reducing the group’s size to just him and Maestri, leaving the peloton behind.

Although the breakaway initially held a substantial advantage, cooperation within the group was scarce, allowing the chasing peloton to gain ground. As the race approached the final climb, Alaphilippe made his move, leaving Maestri behind in pursuit of the stage win.

Jan Hirt (Soudal-QuickStep), who sits in 11th place in the GC, tried to get in the early break, but team Bahrain Victorious, who has rider Antonio Tiberi sitting in 5th in the GC, made sure Hirt wouldn’t get very far.

While Alaphilippe dominated the finale, Narváez showcased his strength by securing second place. Behind them, the GC contenders remained cautious; race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) stayed safe in the peloton alongside Dani Martínez (Bora-hansgrohe), and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). Bora-hansgrohe did attempt to position Martínez for a potential attack, but it never materialized. With the flat stages ahead and a crucial time trial looming, the focus has shifted to preserving energy and maintaining position in the overall standings.

Stage 11: Foiano di Val Fortore to Francavilla al Mare, 207 km

Jonathan Milan Beats Tim Merlier and Kaden Groves in Messy Sprint Finish

May 15, 2024—After a bit of whistle-wetting with Stage 10’s summit finish, the sprinters again took the spotlight for Wednesday’s Stage 11.

The 207-kilometer stage that started in Foiano di Valfortore kicked off with a few bumps in the road before the parcours sloped gently downward toward the sea, with the day’s final hundred kilometers offering more or less a flat run into Francavilla al Mare.

A small breakaway built a two-minute-and-forty-second lead heading into the day’s only classified climb, the category three Pietracatella, which pitched up at the stage’s fortieth kilometer. But they were slowly reeled in along the flat Adriatic coastline and fully caught one-hundred-and-thirty kilometers late, with just over thirty-five kilometers to go.

Despite a fruitless late attack from EF Education-EasyPost’s Andrea Piccolo, the peloton stayed together at a blistering pace of well over sixty kilometers per hour (occasionally over seventy).

With 4 kilometers to go to the finish, the course bent a hard ninety degrees, a brief wrench thrown into an otherwise straightforward day. And other than a bit of slowing, the peloton came through the turn unscathed.

Movistar’s Fernando Gaviria launched first with just a few hundred meters to go, but by the time the final meters ticked down, the race came down to Soudal Quick-Step’s Tim Merlier and current and reigning maglia ciclamino Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek. It marks Milan’s second win in this year’s Giro.

“Our team put me in a really good position,” Merlier said immediately following the stage.“Perfect job from the guys. It’s just a shame that I couldn’t win for them.”

One developing non-racing story to keep an eye on is just how many riders have abandoned due to an illness that is spreading through the peloton. Twenty-one riders have thus far dropped out of the Giro d’Italia, several due to crash-related injuries. However, an inordinate amount of riders have packed it in, citing fevers and viral symptoms.

Just one day after winning Stage 9, Visma-Lease a Bike’s Olav Kooij abandoned with illness during Monday’s rest day. The following day, his team leader, Cian Uijtdebroeks, suffered the same fate. Visma’s main leadout man, Christophe Laporte, crashed out on Stage 4, leaving last year’s world beaters with just four riders left and two weeks still to race.

Stage 10: Pompei to Cusano Mutri, 142 km

Stage 9: avezzano to naples, 214 km, stage 8: spoleto to prati de tivo, 152 km, stage 7: foligno - perugia (individual time trial), 40.6 km, stage 6: torre del lago puccini - rapolano terme, 180 km, stage 5: genova - lucca, 178 km, stage 4: acqui terme - andora, 190 km, stage 3: novara - fossano, 166 km, stage 2: san francesco al campo - santuario di oropa, 161 km, stage 1: venaria reale - torino, 140 km, paret-peintre claims his first professional win.

Fresh off a rest day, it was all out from the flag drop on today’s stage. With 142 km to cover, it was a relatively short stage. Riders had a long warmup before the climbing started. This stage featured a summit finish on a new climb, the Category 1 Bocca della Selva, with a deceiving 4.6-percent average gradient. Jan Tratnik (Visma-Lease a Bike) led for more than 25 km, but it was Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) who finally caught him and took his first professional win.

Despite pleasant temperatures, riders had to contend with wet roads and rain. Staying upright required all the bike handling skills and smart choices on turns and descents. Riders also had to maneuver around a dog on the course—likely a stray.

The first sprint came at 52 km in Arpaia. Alessandro De Marchi (Jayco-AlUla) took first, Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) took second, and Kaden Groves (Alpecin Deceuninck) crossed the line in third.

At 73 km, the lead group and the chase group were still fairly chaotic. Alessandro De Marchi and Simon Clarke remained the lead duo, followed by many attacks. Eventually, we saw a breakaway group of 27 riders.

The 6.1 km category 2 climb at Camposauro saw Simon Geschke (Cofidis) take first, Filippo Fiorelli (VF Group–Bardiani–CSF–Faizanè) second, and Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ) third.

Eventually, Simon Clarke was dropped by the breakaway and caught by the peloton. With 28 km to go, Tratnik took a solo lead. Tratnik took the bonus sprint points at Cusano Mutri with 20 km to go. He remained out front into the final climb of the stage.

The Bocca della Selva climb started with just under 18 km to go. Riders climbed 976 meters (3,202 feet) with a maximum gradient of 10 percent. A plateau broke up the climb a little over halfway through.

With less than 3 km to go, Tratnik was finally caught by Paret-Peintre, followed by Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL).

Following in his brother (and teammate) Aurélien’s footsteps, and just ahead of his idol, Bardet, Paret-Peintre took his first professional win. Previously, his best Giro stage result was 31st place. This was the 15th win for Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale. It’s like they gained superpowers by abandoning the brown bibs.

In his post-race interview, Paret-Peintre said that he decided to go for it in the final kilometers because it was the toughest section, and he felt like he had it in his legs. “I can’t describe what I feel now. It’s just amazing,” said Paret-Peintre. “I was there to go for a good result and why not win? Now, I have a Giro stage win for my first pro win. It’s amazing.

“I saw that the last 4 km was the hardest, so I said, ‘ok, if I want to attack, it’s in the last 4km, so I was waiting waiting waiting for all the last climb, then when I see the last 3 km, I attacked.”

Tratnik took third at the summit, after a strong and successful ride. There were lots of changes in the top ten, with a huge scramble for seconds with the chase group. But no change in the pink jersey going into Stage 11. Is it possible that Tadej Pogačar is finally riding a bit conservatively?

Olav Kooij Takes First-Ever Grand Tour Stage Win

The longest stage so far is arguably one of the easier stages despite covering 214 km. Compared to the gravel stage, a short, hard time trial, and the brutal summit finish in yesterday’s stage, Avezzano to Naples may have a lot of distance, but it was relatively flat and fast. While a valiant effort from Polti Kometa’s Andrea Pietrobon and Mirco Maestri kept the two riders away for most of the race, Julian Alaphilippe and Jhonathan Narváez both made impressive attacks in the final kilometers. But it came down to a sprint finish that was played perfectly by Visma-Lease a Bike’s Olav Kooij.

The long, flat start meant plenty of attacks from early on, with Soudal-QuickStep, EF Pro Cycling and Bahrain Victorious as some of the early teams to head to the front. But the first early attack that stuck came from Polti Kometa’s Andrea Pietrobon and Mirco Maestri—they grew a gap of over two minutes, but the peloton behind seemed unbothered. As always, kudos to the Giro Twitter feed for gems like this:

The two led for much of the race, maintaining a nearly two-minute gap at 65 km to go—a no man’s land with the intact peloton behind and charging hard. The Alpecin-Deceuninck team led the peloton behind Pietrobon and Maestri as the two teammates continued to sweep up sprint points.

A crash at 57 km to go saw three Ineos Grenadiers, including Geraint Thomas—currently third in the general classification—go down. But with his teammates, Thomas was unconcerned and was back on and riding back to the peloton quickly.

Meanwhile, the peloton began to pull the Polti Kometa riders back, dropping the gap to 1:20 with 53 km to go. UAE Team Emirates and EF Education-EasyPost took control of the front of the peloton as the three Ineos Grenadiers, including Thomas, made their way back into it.

At 27 km to go, Julian Alaphillipe launched an attack with the two leaders just 10 seconds ahead. He swiftly chased them down with teammate Nicola Conci as they closed on the top of the punchy climb. Alaphilippe raced past the Polti Kometa riders, continuing his attack up the road. Kevin Vermaerke (dsm-firmenich PostNL) and Lewis Askey (Groupma FDJ) were able to launch themselves from the peloton and attach themselves to the now-six-man strong lead group.

Behind them, attacks came fast and furious from the peloton as the clock ticked down on Stage 9, and riders tried to bridge up to the lead group. Arkea-B&B Hotels’ Ewen Costiou made his way across the now-lowered gap, and the peloton struggled to get organized to chase with Lidl-Trek on the front.

Costiou and Alaphillipe attacked, spearing themselves from the lead group, opening a 15-second gap to the five riders behind them. The peloton continued to reel in the leaders, tightening the gap between them and the now-chase group to only four to 10 seconds.

While Costiou and Alaphillipe made a valiant effort, on the final climb with 10 km to go, Costiou couldn't hold the pace, and Alaphillipe was forced to continue his attack solo, reestablishing a 10-second lead on the peloton as he raced out of the saddle and towards the finish.

But he couldn't quite make it. He was absorbed by the peloton at just over 7 kilometers to go, as Ineos Grenadiers’ Jhonatan Narváez made an attack, opening a five-second gap as the peloton splintered on the climb.

Stage 1 winner Narváez hit the final descent at 3 km to go, enjoying the use of the entire road on the downhill. He held an 8-second gap as the peloton started to organize for the final sprint.

With 1400 meters to go, Narváez had a 12-second gap as the small peloton, including Pogačar, tried to prepare for the sprint. But Narváez was unable to hold on to his gap as the teams massed behind him, swallowing him up with under a hundred meters to go.

Visma-Lease a Bike’s Olav Kooij ultimately took the sprint win ahead of Lidl-Trek's Jonathan Milan and Juan Sebastián Molano (UAE Team Emirates), who was led out by race leader Pogačar. (“If I can help… it’s better for me to be in front and help my friend,” he said in the post-race interview, adding, “I’m really looking forward to the rest day tomorrow.”)

Pogačar Sprints to Victory and Maintains Overall Lead

We know he can win races with dramatic breakaways, but it turns out Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) also can perfectly play out a sprint. In today’s race, he just narrowly outsprinted Daniel Martínez (Bora-hansgrohe) and Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) for the win at the top of the steep final ascent to the finish.

In case you were wondering, Pogačar has continued to opt for the full pink kit after the sartorial debacle earlier this week .

Today marked the first major mountain stage of the Giro, with some of the classic climbs we love to see. Right from the start, it was clear that riders were going to be attempting breakaways before, during, and after every climb. Mountain stages at the Giro are often where we see unlikely stage winners thanks to a breakaway that comes as a surprise and actually sticks.

By 20 km into the race, a large group had formed at the front, but only 20 seconds separated them from the full might of the peloton. The group ebbed and flowed, and was cut down to 14 riders by just under 100 km to go. Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Romain Bardet (dsm–firmenich PostNL) and Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers) were a few of the riders making moves in the lead group, and their lead stretched to over 2 minutes ahead of the peloton at 61 km to go.

But when a team like UAE Team Emirates is chasing the breakaway to preserve Pogačar’s overall lead, does it stand much of a chance?

“We thought the breakaway had a good chance, to be honest,” said Thomas in a post-race interview . “Obviously, UAE set a good tempo on the climb, and I guess because it was still quite close, I don’t know if they decided to go for the stage in the beginning, but they certainly decided to go for it in the end.”

As the group hit 15 km to go, heading towards the final climb into Prati di Tivo, the gap had dropped to just over 30 seconds. While several riders made valiant efforts to hold off the peloton, Pogačar sped into the finish with a group of seven riders and ultimately took the sprint.

However, the GC remained relatively unchanged, since seven of the top finishers on the stage were in the top eight in the GC, which is now led by Pogačar by 2:40 over Martinez and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers).

“I wasn’t expecting this today,” Pogačar said in the post-race press conference, making him pretty much the only person in the world who wasn’t expecting it.

Pogačar Strengthens Grip on Pink Jersey

165 riders rolled down the little pink ramp this morning, each one minute apart, for the first time trial of this year’s Giro.

Vicious crosswinds pushed riders across the road at points, their giant disc wheels acting as windsails, slowing down even some of the most skilled time triallists around.

And there is arguably no rider more skilled on a TT bike than INEOS Grenadiers’ Filippo Ganna, one of the world’s fastest men in the race against the clock.

“Top Ganna” is what the commentators called him, saying that everyone else looked like a passenger plane next to the fighter jet that is Ganna.

However, the 40.6-kilometer stage included a mighty pitch in the final stretch, gaining over two hundred meters over the last four kilometers, whose multi-digit grades benefitted some of the punchier riders in the bunch. After all, today’s time trail ran from Foligno to Perugia, across the undulating hills of Umbria.

By the time Geraint Thomas—who started the day in second place in the GC standings—rolled down the ramp, his INEOS Grenadiers teammates held all three positions on the podium (Ganna, Thymen Arensmen, Magnus Sheffield). By the time he crossed the line, those results held.

But there was only one rider left in the starting tent behind Thomas: current pink jersey, race favorite, and generational talent across a variety of disciplines, Tadej Pogačar.

Going back to his stunning time trial on the penultimate stage of the 2020 Tour de France, where he snatched the yellow jersey from Primož Roglič, Pogačar has displayed that he, too, is one of the world’s great time triallists.

And today, that skill on a TT bike threw a wrench directly into the works of INEOS’s 1-2-3 day, as Pogačar made up over a minute on the stage’s final six kilometers. Pogačar finished seventeen seconds ahead of Ganna, giving the UAE Team Emirates superstar the stage win.

A bunch of INEOS riders who couldn’t quite nip Pogačar. Seems to be one of the themes emerging from this year’s Giro.

Pogačar’s ride put nearly two additional minutes into his nearest rivals in the GC standings, increasing his overall lead from 46 seconds to 2:36.

Meanwhile, BORA-hansgrohe’s Dani Martinez, who entered the day in third place overall, bested Geraint Thomas by thirteen seconds on the stage, putting him ten seconds ahead of Thomas in the GC standings.

“There was a lot of preparations for this, a lot of ups and downs,” Pogačar said. “I’m super happy that today I felt good. I paced myself until the climb and then the climb, full gas.”

Geraint Thomas, meanwhile, wore a subtle look of disappointment after the race.

“I tried to ride within myself, and when it was time to go, I just lacked it a little bit. It is what it is. It’s just one of those days.”

Thomas ended his post-race interview abruptly when the interview reminded him that his teammates did an excellent job on the day, without actually asking a question

“Thanks,” he said sternly, taking a sip of his drink.

Underdog Victory: Pelayo Sánchez Triumphs in Giro’s Gravel Stage

May 9, 2024—Looking at the profile of Stage 6, you might think that the day would have been relatively mellow. One-hundred-eighty kilometers, minimal elevation, a pair of category-four climbs. However, thanks to a trio of gravel sectors—the strade bianche of Tuscany—today’s stage was anything but.

What many thought might be a launching pad for Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who won March’s Strade Bianche with a stunning eighty-kilometer solo break, ended up seeing a series of breakaways, none of which stuck.

Until one did. And, for the second day in a row, the break stayed away.

The trio of Movistar’s Pelayo Sánchez , Soudal Quick-Step’s Julian Alaphilippe, and Jayco AlUla’s Luke Plapp had a lead that stretched out to as much as two and a half minutes as the race entered its third and final gravel sector. But INEOS Grenadiers set a blistering pace behind, quickly whittling the three-man breakaway’s lead to less than thirty seconds with just a few kilometers to go.

But the gap stayed at around twenty seconds as the Plapp, Alaphilippe, and Sánchez passed under the 1 km to go banner. Alaphilippe launched early, and Sanchez responded. Though Plapp was hanging on their wheels, it was clear that this was a two-man race to the finish.

In his post-race interview, Sánchez was asked if he knew what he had just accomplished. “No,” Sánchez replied. “This is amazing. I don’t have words. Crazy, crazy day for me. I thought today that I could be in the breakaway, but I could never imagine winning here.”

Sánchez also admitted that, even though he spent the last several dozen kilometers working with Plapp and Alaphilippe, he tried several times to put time into his mates in the breakaway. “I tried to drop [Plapp and Alaphilippe], but it was impossible for me,” he said. “So, I tried at the end with the sprint. Luckily, I was the fastest.”

Plapp, who spent much of the day in the virtual pink jersey, said after the race, “That was an insane day. The race was out of control, the whole race. It was ridiculous for the first eighty kilometers.”

“The three of us worked reasonably well to the finish,” Plapp added. “We played games a bit. I was half-eyes looking for time and half-eyes looking for the stage, so I ended up riding a bit harder.”

Asked if he was thinking about the pink jersey during his breakaway, Plapp said, “No, no, no. I know (UAE Team Emirates) were never going to let it go. You could see from the gaps they were keeping, they weren’t willing to let the jersey go.”

A Win for the Breakaway as the Peloton Couldn’t Get It Together

May 8, 2024—Another flat-ish day, another sprint finish. That was supposed to be the script for Wednesday’s fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia. But if there’s a theme emerging from the early stages of this year’s Giro, it’s to expect the unexpected.

Because in a move that seems ever more rare, the day’s breakaway stuck, the charging group of sprinters behind unable to catch up.

At the end of the 178-kilometer stage, Benjamin Thomas captured Cofidis’s first win this season. Behind him were EF Education-EasyPost’s Michael Valgren, Andrea Pietrobon of Polti Kometa, and Groupama-FDJ’s Enzo Paleni. The group spent about half of the day with a lead of around one minute over the peloton.

Eight seconds behind Paleni, Lidl-Trek’s Jonathan Milan—the current maglia ciclamino— led the rest of the peloton across the line.

With 5 kilometers to the finish, the four-man breakaway had a solid forty-second lead, and it seemed as though the peloton couldn’t organize themselves enough to reel them back in. Ineos Grenadiers had the most notable attack, but pulled off after the 3-kilometer mark, ostensibly working to protect their lead man Geraint Thomas’s time.

From there, nothing much materialized, and the breakaway was allowed to duke it out themselves for the win.

“I said maybe today’s my day,” said the French Thomas, who captured both his first WorldTour and Grand Tour victories with the win. “Everything is perfect today. I knew the final because I trained there sometimes. I knew the Montemagno in the final, and it helped me, knowing the cobbles and the corners. It's a nice thing to win in Italy. It means a lot to me.”

Thomas, who is a seasoned track racer, likened the four-man break to a “long, long team pursuit.”

Valgren added that the topography of the parcours aided the breakaway’s chances.

“It was actually only with three or four ks to go (that we thought we could win) because you always think the peloton will take 10-seconds-per-kilometer more or less,” Valgren said after the race. “We kept working well together and there was in our favor kind of downhill. Chapeau to the other guys for working well together. We didn't start to play the games, so it was nice.”

The one thing that was expected was that nothing much changed in the GC battle. UAE Team Emirates’ Tadej Pogačar remains forty-six seconds clear of Geraint Thomas and forty-seven seconds ahead of BORA-hansgrohe’s lead man, Dani Martinez.

Jonathan Milan Wins Sprint Finish

Stage Winner: Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) Race Leader: Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

May 7, 2024—For the second straight day, the Giro d’Italia ended with a flat sprint that was almost nabbed with a daring and unexpected last-minute attack.

The 190-kilometer route from Acqui Terme to Andora started with a gradual ride into the day’s only categorized climb, the category 3 Colle del Melogno, where the KOM points were taken by Intermarché-Wanty’s Lilian Calmejane. After that, it was an almost wholly downsloping back half of the stage, ending with a straight, flat shot into the seaside town of Andora.

If the peloton felt a bit jumpy heading into Andora, it no doubt had to do with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Geraint Thomas’s (INEOS Grenadiers) almost successful late break in yesterday’s sprint stage.

And then, just like yesterday, a solo attack was launched with plenty of racing left. Today, it was Ineos-Grenadiers’ Filippo Ganna, one of the fastest solo bike racers that’s ever lived, who attacked at the foot of the day’s final pitch, the Capo Mele, with 4 km to go. However, the long-distance attack was once again in vain, as he was caught and swallowed up with just a few hundred meters to go.

Moments later, another Italian, Lidl-Trek’s Jonathan Milan, launched a furious and commanding 300-meter sprint that would net him his second Giro stage win, exactly one year to the day from his first.

Meanwhile, Dani Martínez, who entered the day in third place in the GC standings, suffered a late-stage mechanical. Lucky for the BORA-hansgrohe racer, it was within the final 3 kilometers, meaning he was awarded the same time as the bunch ahead and lost no extra time to Pogačar and Thomas.

In sad news, Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) slid out on a slick descent with about 62 kilometers left, crashing out of the race with an injury. It was a brutal reminder of the Eritrean’s luck, who, moments after becoming the first Black African rider to win a Grand Tour stage in 2022’s Giro, suffered a freak injury when the cork from his celebratory champagne bottle shot him in the eye, causing him to abandon the race with a hemorrhage in his eye.

“We saw Ganna going full gas in the last climb, and we just had to catch him,” said Milan of his Italian track teammate. “Today, the guys did such an amazing job. This experience was special because my parents were here today. I’m really happy about it,” Milan, who won last year’s maglia ciclamino, added.

After the race, second-place finisher Kaden Groves said the day’s blisteringly high speeds made the stage “quite scary at times.” And when asked about how his Alpecin-Deceuninck team was shaping up over the Giro’s first week, Groves said, “We’re getting there.”

May 6, 2024 – The sprinters had their first chance to shine, as the race’s third stage from Novara to Fassano featured just 750 meters of elevation over 166 kilometers.

However, it wasn’t without a bit of drama, as the race’s biggest GC favorites launched a thrilling attack over the last four kilometers, throwing a wrench into what was expected to be a straightforward day. After an early move from EF-Education EasyPost’s Mikkel Honore, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) followed, forming a small, three-man breakaway that, for a moment, looked as though it might stay away from the group.

Honoré was swallowed up by the group with about 1 kilometer to go, and given the day’s high pace and series of breakaways, there was some thought that Pogačar and Thomas’s attack might just stick. However, the two GC men were caught with about 400 meters to go, setting up the bunch sprint everyone expected the day to end with.

Soudal Quick-Step’s Tim Merlier nipped a group at the line that included Lidl-Trek’s Jonathan Milan and Intermarche Wanty’s Biniam Girmay, who rounded out the day’s podium, along with Arkea’s Jenthe Biermans and dsm-Firmeninch PostNL’s Tobias Lund Andersen.

After a masterful recovery from a late crash to win Sunday’s second stage, Pogačar started the day in the maglia rosa , forty-five seconds clear of Dani Martínez of BORA-hansgrohe and Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers. By the time stage 3 was over, those standings remained exactly the same.

“It wasn’t the plan,” Thomas said of the two-man attack over the closing kilometers. “We just wanted to stay out of trouble.”

He added that, over the final few hundred meters, it took everything he had to keep contact with Pogačar. “I was just trying to hold his wheel,” Thomas said, admitting that the attack was never part of the day’s plan.

“It was the hardest victory so far,” stage winner Merlier said of the unexpected chase he and his group of sprinters found themselves in as Thomas and Pogačar rode away. Merlier said he hesitated, causing him to miss out on his leadout man, and eventually forcing him to attack directly into the wind without any support.

Tadej Pogačar Wins Stage 2 and Takes the Maglia Rosa

May 5, 2024 - Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates wins Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia 2024 and takes the Maglia Rosa. Twenty-seven seconds behind, Dani Martínez (Bora-hansgrohe) takes second, and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) is third.

It was a masterful performance by UAE Team Emirates once Pogačar made it back to the front of the peloton after a small crash due to a front flat tire. The Slovenian leads Thomas and Martinez by 45" in the General Classification.

In the post-race interview, Pogačar was asked if he panicked after crashing in the lead-up to the last climb. “Not really. I was quite calm. I hit a hole in the city and had a super fast flat tire. There was a bit of confusion. I wanted to stop before the corner, but the DS said, ‘No, no, after the corner.’ I was feeling good. The team was super good today. And then we set the pace that we like and it was perfect,” said the race leader.

“I didn’t know the climb well. Everybody was maybe doing this climb for the first time, and it was hard to guess where to do the [hard] pacing, but I think we did a really good job today. And it was super good the last pull of Rafał Majka in the hard part so that I could attack,” Pogačar added.

“I just wanted a stage win today and some gap. Test the legs a little bit. And the [goal] was to take the pink jersey. Now I can relax a little bit in the next few days with the team and we stay safe in the sprints.”

Geraint Thomas of INEOS Grenadiers found himself meeting his limit in today’s stage. “It was so hard to follow, but I knew if I tried to keep going I would completely blow up. I felt bad for sitting on Ben [O’Connor], but I was on the limit for a while there,” said Thomas in the post-race interview.

Regarding Pogačar’s crash, Thomas said, “Honestly, I didn’t know until I was on the climb, and someone said Tadej was back. The plan was to go to the front, not to attack, but to stay safe on the front.”

Narváez Upstages Pogačar to Secure Stage 1 Victory and Maglia Rosa

May 4, 2024 - The opening stage of the Giro d’Italia produced plenty of fireworks and a surprise winner on the line. Team UAE Emirates set it up perfectly for Tadej Pogačar on the opening stage. After some long-lasting breakaways were caught, Pogačar broke free in the last four kilometers with Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers) and Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe). The Slovenian just couldn’t gap those two rivals, and it set it up for a sprint finish. In a bit of a surprise, it was Narváez, the 27-year-old Ecuadorian national champion, outsprinting Schachmann (second on the stage) and Pogačar (third). Narváez earns the first Maglia Rosa of the 2024 Tour of Italy.

Though he didn’t win the stage, Pogačar will head into Stage 2 with an advantage over many of his top GC rivals. Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) was 10 seconds behind Pogačar on the stage and, after factoring in time bonuses, 14 seconds behind Pogačar in the GC standings.

“It was a great feeling. We knew it was going to be a stage for me, and I worked a lot on it,” Narváez said in the post-race interview. “Following the best guy in the world on the climb was really hard, so it’s a special victory today. It’s still hurting me now. It was really hard—really, really hard. But in the end, I made it.”

“I think [Pogačar] went too long in the sprint, 200 meters after a really hard stage, and I did a short sprint, and in the end, I took the victory. For me, it’s amazing. There aren’t many opportunities in a Grand Tour to get the maglia rosa on the first day because you have a bunch sprint, a TT, or a different stage. Today was a good opportunity. I worked really, really hard for it,” added Narváez.

Men’s and women’s professional road cycling: 48 teams have submitted required documents for registration in 2022

Women’s first division road teams and men’s first and second division road teams wishing to be registered for the 2022 season must submit their registration file to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The UCI then assesses, with external financial auditor PwC, whether the teams are in compliance with the UCI Regulations.

The UCI is today publishing the list of teams that have submitted the essential documents with a view to their registration for 2022.

There are 43 candidate teams for registration: 9 women’s teams and 18 men’s teams wishing respectively to renew their UCI Women’s WorldTeam and UCI WorldTeam status, and 16 men’s teams applying for registration as a UCI ProTeam in 2022.

Moreover, in compliance with article 2.13.032 of the UCI Regulations, 5 women’s teams have applied for a UCI Women’s WorldTeam licence and for registration as a UCI Women’s WorldTeam. This would bring the number of UCI Women’s WorldTeams to 14 for the 2022 season.

Decisions on the allocation or renewal of UCI WorldTour and UCI Women’s WorldTour licences are the exclusive responsibility of the Licence Commission (art. 2.13.031, 2.15.201). Finally, the UCI would like to specify that teams that do not appear on this list still have the possibility to finalise their applications before the end of the registration procedure, which will be determined by the completion of the Licence Commission hearings, anticipated for December.

All six British Continental teams to take part in Tour of Britain Women

T here will be more British teams than ever at next month's Tour of Britain Women , with all six of the country's Continental squads set to take part.

Alba Development Road Team, DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK, Doltcini-O’Shea, Hess Cycling Team, Lifeplus-Wahoo and Pro-Noctis - 200° Coffee - Hargreaves Contracting have all been invited to start the four-day WorldTour event, the organiser announced on Friday.

The race, born out of the Women's Tour and now organised by British Cycling , will begin in Welshpool on 6 June.

"It's exciting for everybody," Alba team manager Bob Lyons told Cycling Weekly . "I think if you went back a few years and said, 'In two or three years' time, the Women's Tour of Britain will have six British-based teams.' I don't think anybody would have believed that.

"It's a big opportunity to ride. I'd say the biggest thing is the experience that comes for the riders. It gives them an opportunity to take that step further, in what will be a much stronger field, to see where they sit."

The rest of the participating teams are yet to be revealed, with an announcement expected next week; however, as a WorldTour event, all of the top-tier teams will have received an invite.

For Alba and Pro-Noctis, the race will be their first ever at WorldTour level. Rick Lister, Pro-Noctis team manager, said he received the invite to race the Tour of Britain around six weeks ago, in a personal email from British Cycling's CEO, Jon Dutton.

"We want to do well for the sponsors," said Lister. "I don't think we'll be challenging to win it, but it'd be nice to get some riders on the TV. We'll do our best to try and show our face there and help promote the team."

This year, the number of British women's teams registered at UCI Continental level doubled , increasing from three to six. Speaking to Cycling Weekly ahead of the season, Lyons and other team managers said it was a sign that the women's racing scene is getting stronger in the UK.

The latest Tour of Britain teams announcement, Lyons said, "just emphasises again the great place women's cycling is in".

"You just have to look back at the women's National Series this season so far," the Alba boss added. "It's been fantastic racing. Very high quality, very fast, very hard, and a step up. Lincoln GP at the weekend was the fastest women's Lincoln GP ever by a mile."

The four-stage Tour of Britain Women begins in Welshpool on 6 June and finishes in Leigh on 9 June. There were doubts as to whether the race would go ahead this year, following the liquidation of its former organiser, SweetSpot, but it has since been guaranteed by British Cycling.
