In 1912, The Victoria Theater opened as an alternative to the more expensive fare playing in Chicago’s notorious downtown venues. An article in the Chicago Tribune – one of many rave reviews – predicted the theatre would become one of Chicago’s most popular priced houses. Initially built to host vaudeville and touring stage shows, The Vic – as it’s now known – would prove to be one of the more adaptable and resilient such buildings in town, all the while remaining a stable anchor in the ever-changing landscape of the Lakeview neighborhood.

  • Noel S 8 contributions 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely Amazing! My husband and I enjoyed the tour immensely. Our tour guide, Nick, was the best! He was informative but also let us enjoy parts of the tour on our own. We could tell his mission was to make the tour the very best for everyone! The only negative as that there were no usb ports to recharge our phones after taking so many videos and pictures. Other than that, it was a perfect day! Visiting the United Nations in Vienna

The impressive modern setting of the Vienna International Centre (VIC) has been home to numerous international organizations since 23 August 1979. On daily guided tours , visitors can learn about the work of the United Nations and experience the Vienna International Centre's striking architecture and vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere of the VIC.

By signing up for a tour, you'll have the chance to count the flags of the more than 190 Member States on the Memorial Plaza, see a variety of temporary exhibitions on the work of the United Nations and perhaps even see one of the impressive conference rooms.

After the tour, you can find further information on UN activities and acquire a variety of United Nations souvenirs in the Visitors' Centre at Gate 1.

Come and visit us - the United Nations is easy to reach from the centre of Vienna.

Please remember to bring a valid identification document with your photograph on it.

How to reach us:

Take the underground line U1 to the “Kaisermühlen/Vienna International Centre” stop and then follow the signs to Gate 1 of the VIC, which is the main entrance. Please note that, due to construction work on the U1 line, trains travelling in the direction of Leopoldau will not stop at Kaisermühlen/VIC from 25 April–7 August 2022.  As an alternative, passengers can travel one stop further – to the “Alte Donau” stop – and then take the train back one stop to Kaisermühlen/VIC.

The VIC is also easy to reach by car via the A22 motorway or from the city centre via the Reichsbrücke. Buses may park in the side street off Wagramer Strasse. The VIC is accessible to people with disabilities.

The Silo Art Trail is Australia’s largest outdoor gallery, linking the Wimmera Mallee’s treasured small towns across 700km through the region.

Providing an insight into the true spirit of the Wimmera Mallee, the trail recognises and celebrates the region’s people through a series of large-scale murals painted onto grain silos, many of which date back to the 1930s. The trail has seen internationally renowned artists from Australia and across the world visit the region, meet the locals and transform each grain silo into an epic work of art, each one telling a unique story about the host location.

The Silo Art Trail was conceived after the development of the first silo artwork in Brim. What started as a small community project by the Brim Active Community Group, GrainCorp, Juddy Roller and artist, Guido van Helten, resulted in widespread international media attention and an influx of visitors to the region. From here, the original Silo Art Trail was born and continues to evolve.

The Silo Art Trail was created as a partnership between Yarriambiack Shire Council , international street art agency Juddy Roller , Victorian Government, Australian Government and GrainCorp , who donated the silos as canvases for the artists’ work.

The Tour is Vice’s entry-level 3-piece ball. I don’t know why it has the name “tour” when it doesn’t come with a urethane cover. That said, if it performs well, it could be one of the best values in golf.

We’ve tested and reviewed a lot of golf balls over the years, some of them are a lot better than others. I’ve noticed that a lot of golfers are using the wrong ball, ones that will make the game harder. So, is the Tour one you should add to your bag?

Our Testing Process : We test products for several weeks or months before writing our reviews so we can help you find the right product.  Learn more here .

Out Of Bounds Golf Verdict

If you’re looking for a ball that flies long and straight off the tee, the Tour is a ball worth trying. It’s the longest model in the Vice lineup, and when paired with the price tag it comes with, is a solid ball for a wide range of golfers.

Vice Tour Product Details

vic tour

When a ball has “tour” in the name you’d expect it to offer premium performance, something similar to the Pro V1. Since this ball came with a surlyn cover , I didn’t really understand where the name came from.

If you’re not familiar, tour-level balls come with a urethane cover . It’s generally softer and produces more spin around the green. For more info, you can read our guide on the different types of ball covers .

Anyway, the Tour has a 3 layer design and comes with a compression rating somewhere around 80. It’s designed for all swing speeds (ideally 90-110 MPH) and is supposed to be long and straight off the tee.

If the Tour can deliver what it promises, for a great price, it’ll be tough to beat. You can reduce the price to $21 per dozen when you buy 5+ boxes.

You can see how the Tour compares to the other Vice balls HERE .

vic tour

Since this ball has a surlyn cover and a medium compression rating, it has a pretty firm feel to it . If you’ve ever hit the Taylormade Distance+ or Titleist Velocity, I’d say it’s somewhat similar.

It took me a little bit of time to get used to the firmness, especially on the greens. I felt like it produced a “click” feeling at impact. It almost felt like I was going to blast the ball past the hole, but I was more used to it after a round or two.

Off the tee, the ball exploded off the club . If you’re used to a low compression ball or something like a Pro V1, it might take a little bit to get used to the feel. Compared to other Vice balls, the Tour feels as firm as the Pro Plus and Pro Zero .

You can see the difference between soft and firm golf balls HERE .

The Quality

vic tour

Vice started making balls in 2016, I believe. When they first came out the big issue was the quality of the covers . People would start to notice scratches and cuts after only a few holes.

I actually did notice this myself with the first few balls I tested. What I’ve seen over the past couple of years though is that they’ve been improving the quality.

After taking 10 shots off the tee, 10 shots with the wedge, and finishing my round, the ball only had a couple of minor marks . Definitely not as durable as Titleist, but it’s much better than before.

I wanted to really check the durability of the ball, so I hit a pretty aggressive wedge shot that actually hit the cart path as well. The picture above shows what the ball looked like. None of the other balls looked like that though.

The Short Game

vic tour

Since this ball is called the Tour, you’d expect it to have tour-level spin around the greens. This is the main difference between a budget ball and a premium one.

To figure out how the ball performs, we’ll take 10 shots with my sand wedge and see how much the ball rolled out or rolled back. A negative number means it landed and rolled back. A positive number means it landed and rolled away. Here are the results:

On average, the Tour ball landed on the green and rolled out 4.7 yards . Compared to other balls, I’d say it’s somewhere middle of the pack. Decent enough for average players but probably not enough for advanced golfers.

Compared to the other Vice balls, it was near the Pro Zero, in my experience. Better than the Drive (review HERE ), but not as good as the Pro (review HERE ) and Pro Soft (review HERE ).

The Long Game

vic tour

The final area we’ll look at is how it performed off the tee. The type of ball I’m after is one that flies long and straight. I don’t really care much about workability, and I think most golfers would feel the same way.

We’ll do a similar test, taking 10 shots off the tee and recording the distances. I also noted whether or not the ball landed in the fairway. Here are the results:

On average, the Tour went 260 yards and hit 60% of the fairways . That’s exactly what I was looking for. Compared to the other Vice balls, this one was the longest and straightest.

I don’t think it’s the longest ball I’ve hit, but the performance off the tee is similar to other distance balls. Most distance balls have 2 layers, so since the Tour has an extra, the short-game spin is a bit better.

You can see how far the average golfer hits their clubs HERE .

The Bottom Line

vic tour

Even though this ball has a few downsides, I do think it’s a solid golf ball and I would feel comfortable recommending it . They’re long off the tee, hit a lot of fairways, and are priced extremely well (especially if bought in bulk).

I think the main focus of mid to high handicappers should be hitting more fairways. Too many people are using premium balls that have high spin rates. Chances are, it’s actually hurting your performance off the tee.

Spice Girls Have a Full Reunion at Victoria Beckham's 50th Birthday Party

Stop right now and check out a long-awaited reunion of all five spice girls at victoria beckham's 50th birthday bash, as seen in videos shared by her husband david beckham..

The Spice Girls knew what we want, what we really, really want. And they delivered.

A reunion of all five members of the '90s pop group took place April 20, marking the first time in more than a decade that the singers were seen on camera together in more than a decade. Mel B , 48,  Geri Halliwell Horner , 51,  Emma Bunton , 48, and Mel C , 50, attended Victoria Beckham 's 50th birthday party at a club in London and recreated an iconic moment in their band's history—and Posh Spice's husband was there to provide the receipts.

In a video  recorded and shared by  David Beckham , the Spice Girls are seen singing along and performing the dance choreography to their hit 1997 song "Stop."

"Best night ever!" Victoria captioned the video . "Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much! #SpiceUpYourLife."

David, who could not look more excited about the performance, wrote alongside his own Instagram  post , "I mean come on x @victoriabeckham @melaniecmusic @officialmelb @emmaleebunton @gerihalliwellhorner."

Mel B shared Victoria's post on her Instagram Stories, writing, "About last night #tourdatescommingsoon."

Scary Spice had hinted that a Spice Girls reunion was in the works back in January.

The   America's Got Talent: Fantasy League judge continued, "It's amazing that we've managed to kind of still stay friends, it's been 30 years," adding, "As a group you're just welded together for life because you've been through such a crazy experience."

After the Spice Girls split in 2000, all five members reunited formally to tour together in late 2007 and early 2008. In 2012, they performed at the Olympics closing ceremony in London.

The Spice Girls singers also toured as a quartet — without Victoria —in 2019 and have also had many informal mini-reunions over the years. In 2022, Victoria, Mel C and Emma attended Geri's 50th birthday party, where they danced, sang along and recreated their dance choreography to the band's 1996 hit "Say You'll Be There." At the time, David also shared video of the reunion, writing, "@officialmelb you were missed."

Look back at the Spice Girls over the years...

The Spice Girls became a global success upon the release of "Wannabe" in 1996. Considered the best-selling female group of all time, the British songstresses have sold over 85 million records worldwide.

The girl group rocked the stage at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City with a performance of "Say You'll Be There." They took home Best Dance Video for "Wannabe" that year.

Ginger Spice's Union Jack mini-dress became synonymous with the Spice Girls after their performance at the 1997 Brit Awards. Initial controversy aside, the iconic ensemble sold for more than $58,000 at a a charity auction.

Spice World

Released in December 1997,  Spice World: The Movie became an instant blockbuster hit. Two decades later, it remains a cult phenomenon and recently even returned to theaters in the U.K. to celebrate the milestone anniversary!

The Spice Girls made a comeback in 2007 with a global tour that sold out in a whopping 38 seconds. That same year, the ladies hit the stage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Hollywood.

After four years apart, the girl group reunited once again to celebrate the premiere of  Viva Forever! , a musical inspired by their time in the spotlight.

At the closing ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics, the fivesome performed a medley of greatest hits like "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life."

In 2016,  Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell  and  Emma Bunton  announced a spinoff trio called GEM. A single titled "Song for Her" leaked online, but the project was evidently put on hold around the time Halliwell announced her pregnancy with baby No. 2.

Cue the pandemonium! All five Spice Girls sent social media into a frenzy with this photo posted in February 2018.

They responded to the excitement in a joint statement, saying, "We have enjoyed a wonderful afternoon catching-up and reminiscing about the amazing times we have spent together. We are always overwhelmed at how much interest there is across the whole world for The Spice Girls. The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together. We all agree that there are many exciting possibilities that will once again embrace the original essence of The Spice Girls, while reinforcing our message of female empowerment for future generations."

After announcing in late 2018 that four of the five Spice Girls would be reuniting once more for a tour—Victoria sat this one out to focus on the commitment to her fashion empire—Geri, Emma and the Mels began a 13-date European tour at Croake Park in Dublin, Ireland on May 24, 2019. Concluding with three nights at London's Wembley Stadium, the tour earned over $78 million, proving that Girl Power never goes out of style.

‘Station 19’ Star Boris Kodjoe Talks Directing Vic’s ‘Resurrection,’ Saying Goodbye to Sullivan in Final Season and What He Took From the Set

STATION 19 - “With So Little To Be Sure Of” - With both Vic’s job and Crisis One in jeopardy, a flashback shows how the program has changed the lives of the team and the local community. Meanwhile, Ben keeps a secret from Bailey. THURSDAY, MAY 2 (10:01-11:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Eric McCandless)
BORIS KODJOE

SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers from “With So Little to Be Sure Of,” the sixth episode of the final season of ABC’s “ Station 19 .”

Boris Kodjoe is ready to start his next chapter. Since wrapping production last month on the final season of ABC’s venerable firefighter drama “Station 19,” the 51-year-old actor — who rose to fame in the early aughts in the Showtime drama “Soul Food” — has set his sights on broadening his horizons.

Popular on Variety

Shot over eight and a half days, this week’s episode finds Chief Natasha Ross (Merle Dandridge) going toe-to-toe with Seattle mayor Robel Osman (Emerson Brooks) to save both firefighter Vic Hughes’ (Barrett Doss) job and Crisis One, the program founded by Vic’s late best friend, Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan), to teach firefighters to de-escalate tense calls without police intervention. That contentious fight between Chief Ross and Mayor Osman — whose personal vendetta against Station 19 has only grown after Vic publicly called him out at a press conference in the previous episode — is juxtaposed against a series of flashbacks. In those flashbacks, the audience sees the evolution of a friendship that Vic strikes up with Morris (George Wyner), a homeless Vietnam War veteran whom she met on a Crisis One call.

This episode “is about Vic coming to terms with the fact that despite always taking care of everyone else, it’s OK to let yourself fall. It’s OK to be vulnerable; it’s OK to not be strong. And that has been a long time coming for her,” Kodjoe explains in the interview below. “If you look at this final season, it’s actually been from Episode 1 that she’s been trying to keep it together, so it was a really beautiful theme.”

By the end of the episode, Chief Ross stops by Station 19 to deliver some much-needed good news: Vic can keep her job, and Crisis One will live to fight another day. While taking a break from helping his daughter, Sophie, move out of her college dorm for the summer, Kodjoe discusses his latest foray into directing, saying goodbye to the longest character he has ever played and describes the kind of sports film that he hopes to make one day.

You were given the unique challenge of juxtaposing the present-day storyline with all of these little vignettes that are designed to show the firefighters’ — and especially Vic’s — connection to Morris. What were the most important challenges and considerations that you had in mind as the director of this episode?

The VFX stuff is difficult, because you have to imagine how everything’s going to look, and based on that, you don’t have to stage every single shot and block it. There’s a lot of action [in this episode], and we had a stunt, an explosion, so those were probably the most detailed things I had to really prepare for rigorously so that I was ready for any wildcard that would just appear out of nowhere.

Other than that, the tonality of the show was interesting because, like you said, we had vignettes that took us back to the past. I wanted to set the tone visually, but also make sure that we don’t forget about some of the character traits that we knew from the past when we go back and do these flashbacks. For instance, Sullivan had come a long way from being this grumpy, authoritative, quasi-dictator that he was in the beginning, so I wanted to show that he’s come full circle by really diving into some of the new character traits that we have discovered in the last two years, and really showing the juxtaposition between him now and him then. And that goes for every single character in this episode; we had to make sure that we really considered the arc that each character went through.

The emotional climax of this hour takes place during the debriefing scene inside the firehouse. How did you approach shooting that?

First, let me give someone props who really wrote the you-know-what out of this episode, which is Rochelle Zimmerman, who was my partner-in-crime, who was there with me every step of the way. She helped me take care of our guest star and make sure that every single theme really speaks to the tonality that we were shooting for. Rochelle was really the driving force behind this episode.

The two scenes that you’re referring to touch on the idea of being a person of color — and, in this case, a Black woman — who is usually expected to support and champion others, but doesn’t always get the same kind of care in return. It was particularly moving to me to hear Travis tell Vic privately that he will take care of her, that he will be the one to catch her when she falls. Did you give Barrett and Jay any specific direction for the bunk room scene?

I’m glad that you got that from that scene, because that’s what we were shooting for. It was less directing them; it was more about having a conversation with them and giving them permission to explore all of those emotions that you just referred to. You’re right that it is about Vic coming to terms with the fact that despite always taking care of everyone else, it’s OK to let yourself fall. It’s OK to be vulnerable; it’s OK to not be strong. And that has been a long time coming for her. If you look at this final season, it’s actually been from episode one that she’s been trying to keep it together, so it was a really beautiful theme. If there’s one thing that I shared with them, it was to find the joy and the light in that scene because it is about resurrection rather than falling deeper.

Given that the visual language of any show in its seventh season is already so well-established, how much creative freedom did you have as a director? Do you have a particular style of direction?

Personally, I believe in pacing, and I also believe in not overshooting, which means sometimes less is more. We are so familiar with these characters that I don’t have to hold the audience’s hand. By creating these elaborate sort of introduction shots, sometimes you can go right smack dab in the middle of the action or start on a closeup of a character that is so well-established without showing the environment that he or she is in, because everybody knows the show. So everybody knows that when you get really close on a character who is, let’s say, in bed, that they’re in the bunk room.

I took a little bit of freedom and also the liberty of creating my own visual language, because I knew they weren’t going to be able to fire me. The show is over, so I was like, “Hey, what are they going to do? Not use me again?” So I was less concerned with that. But I also know the show and these characters really well. I wanted to be true to that, and honor that while at the same time adding a little bit of my own spice to it.

Three days into shooting the premiere, you discovered that the seventh season of “Station 19” would be its last. But since the crew was already prepping for the second episode, the writers really had only eight episodes to wrap up any loose ends. Are you happy with where we leave Sullivan in the finale?

Obviously, the love story between Sullivan and Ross is the main storyline between them. It’s about where they’re going to go with that relationship. Are they going to say goodbye to each other, or are they going to take it a step further and take it to the next level? I’m really proud of the writers, because the way they wrapped that up was phenomenal in so many ways, because they really paid homage to their culture, and they really made sure that we see some of the levels between them that we hadn’t seen before.

What do you mean by that? What cultural details resonated with you personally?

One of the things that I was really happy to see between them was the joy and the freedom to be who they are and not having to hide behind their shields and pretend and be professional all the time, so I really enjoyed this last season. I really enjoyed Sullivan getting in touch with his playful and joyful side, and for people to see that as well.

Sullivan is now engaged to Ross, who he met in the military, but there is still a subset of fans who believe Sullivan should end up with his ex-wife, Andy (Jaina Lee Ortiz). How would you contrast those two relationships?

In the first half of the show, with Sullivan and Andy, I think those two came from really traumatizing circumstances in their former relationships, and they fell in love while fighting. There was a lot of fighting going on between them because they hadn’t come to terms with their individual pasts yet. So even though the love was strong, the infatuation was there, and the attraction was there, I think that we found them still in the healing process. I think that’s the main difference between his and Andy’s relationship, and then his with Ross. I think Sullivan and Ross found each other again after having spent a lot of time healing and coming to a place where they’re really at peace with who they are. So when you’re at that place, I think it’s much easier to be open and vulnerable because you have healed.

How would you say Robert has evolved in the six seasons that you’ve played him?

I think the first half of the series, Robert was angry and afraid, and he was compensating for some of the trauma that he had experienced — losing his wife and going through what he went through [as an Army veteran]. And the second half of the show, I think he was able to let go of some of those ghosts and really step into his light and his power and allow himself to be free and to love again. It was fun to play him constricted, but it was even more fun to play him expanded, if you will. I really enjoyed that.

Looking back, do you have an episode or storyline that you are most proud of?

I’m proud of all of ’em, but [“Get Up, Stand Up”; Season 4, Episode 12] stuck out because we were able to collaborate with [former showrunner] Krista Vernoff at the time. It was post-George Floyd, and we did an episode that really addressed some of the social justice issues that we were going through at the time as a country and as a world. I was really honored and delighted to be able to give voice to some of those feelings that I had at the time — and that’s really another signature of the show. We were never afraid to speak out, and to talk about current issues that were important — to shine a light on things that have been stuck in the dark, to also uplift and give voice to communities that aren’t traditionally heard as much as they deserve to be. So that’s a testament to the courage of the showrunners, the producers, the writers, and the cast to make sure that we continuously raised the bar and stuck to those principles.

You just wrapped production on the series finale on April 19. Did you get a chance to take any on-set mementos to commemorate your time on the show?

Are you alleging that I would steal something from set?

Yes, I did. I took my helmet, and I also took my name plate that’s on the back of the turnouts.

Robert Sullivan is now the longest role you have ever played, so it must feel bittersweet to be closing such a significant chapter of your career. What are some of your biggest takeaways from working on this show?

The major takeaway from the show, and the one thing I’m eternally grateful for, is the relationships. I have made some great friends over these past seven years, and I love these people like family, so I don’t regret a minute of it. Even though the cancellation comes as a surprise to all of us — because the show has been doing really well, and it’s been solid for years for [ABC] — I realized that this is business, and this business is fleeting. It is very, very temperamental, so sometimes, decisions are made that you might not understand.

Have you given much thought to what you will do next?

Absolutely. I’m very intentional about things that I want to do. I write down everything that I have planned. I have an org chart. I visualize. I have tons of conversations. I’m in talks right now about four different projects that I’m interested in. So, yes, I am very excited to get on this next adventure, and I won’t put any limitations on myself. I want to do features. I want to do TV.

You’re one of the few high-profile actors I know who actually grew up playing competitive tennis — and you even competed at the collegiate level. Have you seen “Challengers” yet?

I have not seen that movie yet. I’ll watch it, however. I’m very curious to see it.

Well, I was going to ask you if you had any thoughts on the way that tennis was depicted in the film. But as an avid tennis fan myself, I think it’s also no secret that this sport we both love hasn’t exactly been depicted convincingly onscreen in the past.

It always bothers me when sports movies don’t depict the sport in a legitimate way. It just drives me crazy. It takes me right out of the movie.

It’s just that when you don’t know [a sport], you don’t know how to portray it correctly. That’s what it comes down to. So even though you might have a consultant on board who knows what they’re saying and doing, you’re not the director, because the director and the editor are going to make choices that are completely disconnected from how the sport is played. I mean, sometimes you see people starting the serving motion from the deuce side and they end up in the ad court. Or they’re hitting an approach shot and taking the first three steps towards the net, and then the next frame they’re at the baseline. I guess the general public wouldn’t notice, but I love the sport. That’s been my whole life, so I’m probably a little bit more critical.

I’m sure [“Challengers”] did a good job, and I love Zendaya. I’m a big fan of hers. She’s a sweet, sweet girl. I’ve known her for a long time, so I’m sure she killed it again.

Given your pedigree and experience as both a tennis player and an actor, I hope you get a chance to make a tennis movie one day.

I think there’s an Arthur Ashe movie floating around somewhere, so I would love to do that. [Tennis] has been my life ever since I was tiny.

The Spice Girls: Melanie B, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams And Emma Bunton

Spice Girls reunite at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party

David Beckham shares video of former girl group singing their hit Stop at private club Oswald’s in London, as Mel B hints at a tour

The Spice Girls have reunited for a rare performance featuring all five members – at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party, where they danced to their classic hit Stop.

The party was held on Saturday at Oswald’s, a private members’ club in London, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and Gordon Ramsay also attending.

During the party, Beckham – along with fellow Spice Girls Geri Halliwell-Horner, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Emma Bunton – sang along to Stop as well as performing the signature choreography from the single off their 1997 sophomore album Spiceworld.

Beckham’s husband, David Beckham , posted a video to Instagram where he gleefully looked on. “I mean come on,” the 48-year-old former footballer captioned the video.

Victoria responded in the comments, writing: “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much!”

Brown also hinted at a potential reunion tour. “About last night #tourdatescomingsoon,” she shared, reposting the video to her Instagram story.

Last month, Brown teased in an interview with Today that the Spice Girls were working on something “very good” together – though she did not confirm rumours of a tour at the time.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls, who formed in 1994 and officially split six years later in 2000.

They have reunited multiple times over the years – most recently as part of their 2019 Spice World tour, which Beckham did not attend. The last time all five members performed publicly was in 2012 for the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.

In 2023 the Beckhams’ marriage was explored in a four-part Netflix documentary series, which also addressed his rise to fame as a footballer and the extensive press speculation that he allegedly had an affair while playing for Real Madrid in 2003.

Time Out says

Sophie Treadwell’s impressionist masterpiece is turned into a pulverising rapture in Richard Jones’s astonishing production, starring Rosie Sheehy

In a wedge shaped set, bright yellow as bile, a machine does its work.

In Richard Jones’s staggering revival of Sophie Treadwell’s 1928 expressionist classic, our first glimpse of Rosie Sheehy’s Young Woman is the sight of her freaking out in a press of black-clad ’20s New Yorkers, her blue patterned dress frumpy next to their sharp, dark angles.

The story cuts to her office. To the strains of what sounds like a demonic metronome, her colleagues gossip about her, repetitive gibberish underscored by their bafflement that the Young Woman is late – why would anyone would want to miss any of this?

Sheehy arrives and she’s not a timid wallflower, but earthy, speaking with a mile-wide Brooklyn accent. She lives with her elderly Irish mother, who is later delighted when her daughter reveals she has had a marriage proposal from her boring, unattractive, much older boss (Tim Frances). Her mum says she should marry him; an upset Young Woman screams like a wild animal; she marries him anyway.

Jones’s production is a sort of infernal anxiety machine, percussive and remorseless, each hallucinatory scene immaculately crafted with its own distinct mood. Although the tone of the story changes repeatedly, catharsis is banned here. Hyemi Shin’s retina-searing set is unforgettable, Benjamin Grant’s sound design skin-crawling unnerving, Adam Silverman’s lighting exquisitely unsettling, Sarah Fahie’s movement ravishingly creepy.

Jones’s production is an infernal anxiety machine

As much installation as drama, the show’s clanking metallic rhythms envelop the Young Woman, but it begins to feel like we’re being put through a brutal industrial process too. In the scene where the Young Woman gratefully hooks up with a man she meets in a speakeasy, the entire room is plunged into darkness; at the climax, as she is put on trial for her husband’s murder, we are bathed in dazzling white light. In one sequence, bone shuddering bass drones sweep the auditorium.

Sheehy is astonishing. There’s something almost Hogarthian about how each scene sees her nail a different aspect of alienation, from her opening panic attack on the subway to her excruciating honeymoon with Frances’s Husband, her time in hospital after the birth of a daughter (who is represented only by the pounding of a pneumatic drill), her pathetic gratefulness to the man she hooks up with.

For the most part she seems like a grounded young woman increasingly aware of (and repulsed by) the meaningless of the society around her: she is bored of her job, exasperated with her mother, her skin crawls at her husband’s touch. Feral screams and full body convulsions rip through her as she becomes increasingly incapable of suppressing her disgust.

Jones’s hyper-stylized production is audacious from start to finish, but the scope of his ambitions becomes apparent at the end, when a caged Young Woman is put on trial. At the climax she becomes an almost Christ-like figure, her very existence a rebuke to a society for which her destruction has now become a collective endeavour: it is clear that everyone is against her. Religious imagery abounds: a solemn procession marching her to her end, a Barabbas-like prisoner caged next to her.

It’s certainly a choice to push it this far, given the character is based upon real-life husband murderer Ruth Snyder. But Jones’s production feels like a logical conclusion of Treadwell’s intent, which was always to compassionately consider Snyder’s reasons for snapping.

Yes, it is not exactly revelatory in 2024 to observe that capitalism is a machine that crushes the little guy. But in the apocalyptic ecstasy of this productions’s final moments, the story feels less cliched than sacred, mythological, foundational – a tale of one woman standing up to the system turned into a pulverising rapture.

The museum is participating in First Friday Art Walk, when admission is free from 5-8 p.m.
