Sailboat Review: Voyage 590

Over the years, I’ve heard marketing folks offer some pretty ambitious descriptions of a given vessel’s aims and capabilities. A couple of years ago, a sales rep said that I could take his company’s new 40-something-footer and “do a Bermuda Race on it, or live aboard, or sail around the world.” Except the deck layout was horrible for racing, the galley and storage were too tight for long-term ­habitation, and there wasn’t nearly enough tankage for crossing oceans. In reality, it was a pretty fair coastal cruiser. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t win any prizes.

In sharp contrast to that experience, it was refreshing to step aboard the Voyage 590. The marketing was actually the straightforward skinny: This 59-foot cat , built in South Africa, is a high-end charter boat with a half-dozen equally sumptuous staterooms. Not a long-range cruiser. Not for living aboard. 

What’s more, it has one and only one chartering venue: the British Virgin Islands, from a base at Tortola’s Soper’s Hole. Not the Mediterranean or South Pacific—just the BVI. Simple, no? What wasn’t said is that the 590 is an engineering marvel that addresses its design writ superbly. But I was about to discover all that on my own. 

Voyage founders Robin and Jo-Ann Downing set out from South Africa to the Caribbean aboard their own boat—a custom monohull design that Robin was not only sailing, but also selling—nearly 40 years ago. They then returned home and switched allegiances to cruising catamarans. The first two Voyage cats launched in 1995. By 2017, Voyage ran some 30 charter boats in the BVI and offered dedicated cruising boats beyond those sold into their ­charter-management program. 

Then Hurricane Irma happened, decimating their fleet. With help from their three kids (and their spouses), the Downings regrouped and carried forth with their family-run BVI charter business. It is now replenishing its charter-boat numbers, at this time exclusively with the 590. Going forward, the company has completed preliminary designs for “owner’s layouts” with fewer staterooms, as well as different amenities for long-range cruising and living aboard. The first is expected to launch in early 2024.

Phil Southwell is the ­company’s current naval ­architect of record, but the 590’s concept, layout and objective are all Robin Downing’s. And he is clear about what he was after. 

“It’s a six-cabin layout with slightly different configurations but all of equal size,” he said. “It fills a niche in the market.” 

Of course, not everyone wants to vacation with a dozen companions, but if you do, here you go. Bareboats are available to super-qualified sailors—we’re basically talking longtime, repeat customers—but many charter parties go all-inclusive with a captain and chef, or at least a captain. Which makes sense. The 590 is a lot of boat, my friends. As such, it was named Best Charter Boat in CW ’s 2022 Boat of the Year competition . 

The comfort of vacationers was on Downing’s mind when it came to propulsion and charging systems. The 590 is available in a dedicated all-electric version, or a hybrid setup with a diesel engine for propulsion augmented by a set of Bellmarine electric generators (and accompanying solar panels). In all instances, there’s a bank of lithium-ion batteries. Voyage wants its guests to enjoy full nights of air-conditioned comfort without the noise and bother of a diesel generator. Anyone who has picked up a mooring in a crowded BVI anchorage will also appreciate this silence.

“It’s a techy boat, and they’re doing a lot of cool things with lithium tech and 24-volt systems,” BOTY judge and systems expert Ed Sherman said. “In terms of the systems integration, they’re using very high-end inverters with variable-speed air-conditioning systems that step down as it gets cooler at night. That’s pretty cool stuff. They’ve selected the MG lithium battery banks, which were originally created and designed by Victron Energy in Europe. And there are a lot of refrigeration units on board. They want to make sure the beer is chilled, and they went to great lengths to ensure that it is.”

Nothing is simple about the 590’s construction, including the hand-laid, three-piece hull mold. There’s another vast mold for the deck. All of it, including the structural grid, is foam-cored and vacuum-­bagged in a laminate that incorporates a vinylester skin. It’s all extremely solid and well-executed. 

How to describe the rest of the boat? My notes had two related entries: “laid out for gracious living” and “party palace.” Both were meant to be high compliments.

Stashed in the hulls, those aforementioned six staterooms—four with athwartships bunks, and another pair with fore-and-aft berths—are indeed of equal size and appointments, though with different color schemes and accoutrements for a bit of variety. Topside and aft, swim platforms in each hull step up to a wide boarding platform that accesses the cockpit, with sliding doors that lead to the saloon. With those doors open, the layout makes for a sweeping, integrated space. There’s an outdoor grill, naturally, and a couple of members of the related fridge family. The dining table is long and wide enough for the entire New England Patriots offensive unit. 

The galley is forward with a window for ventilation and easy entree to a forward cockpit, in the event one wishes to throw separate parties at the same time. Five steps lead up to the flybridge, which hosts all the sailing controls and running rigging, ably tamed by a trio of electric stainless-­steel Andersen winches and a series of Spinlock clutches managing color-coded lines. A single wheel is to starboard, with engine controls for the twin Yanmars and a suite of B&G instrumentation. There’s a hard Bimini overhead with windows to the mainsail, in addition to the windshield. Sun pads for lounging are here, there and everywhere. 

The gargantuan mainsail is of course raised by an electric winch, and I was surprised to see what I thought was a black carbon laminate, but it turned out to be Dacron painted black (it still looked cool as could be). The next surprise under sail was the steering, which I thought would be hydraulic on such a beast of a boat. It turned out to be a standard wire Lewmar arrangement that wasn’t exactly sensitive, but it was more than adequate. In 8 to 10 knots of breeze upwind, we made better than 6 knots and sped up to better than 7 on a reach. The fact that these boats are delivered on their own bottom to the Caribbean is a testament to their seaworthiness. 

I asked Robin about top-end boatspeed, and with a look of mock horror, he said: “You don’t want to ever do more than 12 on this boat. It’s 26 tons.” He then listed the many things you’d need to compromise to go faster: slender hulls (which would erase the spaciousness of the accommodations), a higher bridge deck (ditto) and so on. Besides, on the 590, haste is definitely not the point of the exercise. 

BOTY judge Gerry Douglas said that the 590 reminded him of “a boutique hotel.” His words ring true to me, and I personally would be more than happy to check in anytime.

Voyage 590 (2023) 'SEVEN'

The open salon / galley features a 360-degree view, with a sliding door and windows that open to the cockpit dining area. It has a huge table and plenty of seating for guests to enjoy delicious and memorable meals prepared by our Chef. The covered flybridge upper deck is a great place to take in the view, enjoy drinks and snacks, or take an afternoon snooze. The foredeck has sun loungers and space for a morning workout or yoga. A shade awning on the foredeck is also available.

SEVEN’s three-member crew of Captain, Chef, and Stewardess provide luxury service, meals, cocktails, and most importantly – lots of fun experiences! SEVEN is equipped for onboard scuba-diving, led by Captain James, a PADI-certified dive instructor. Plenty of water toys are available, and the fishermen onboard can try for a big catch while on passage. If they are successful, Chef Koko will prepare an amazing fresh fish meal, but even if the “big one” gets away, guests will dine in luxury, with menus he creates tailored to guest preferences. Stewardess Elisha keeps the cabins tidy and attends to guests’ needs, but her real passion is mixology and creating show-stopper cocktails! She also uses her artistic flair to present beautiful tablescapes — meals are both a visual and culinary delight.

All five cabins have a walk-around queen bed with side tables, individual A/C, spacious shower, electric head, towel bar, door hooks, separate vanity and medicine cabinet. They feature ample storage with drawers, lockers, and space under the bed for soft luggage. Each cabin is decorated in shades of Caribbean blue and feature underwater photography taken by SEVEN’s owner.

Captain James Gordon Captain James was raised on sailing among Canada’s freshwater lakes. He suffered a severe case of wanderlust from an early age and always looked for opportunities to combine work with his love for adventure and travel. Teaching skiing in Japan, diving the Great Barrier Reef, or guiding expeditions to Antarctica became ‘another day at the office’. James is a former instructor with the Canadian Yachting Association, an RYA Yacht Master Offshore captain and just celebrated his 25th anniversary as a PADI scuba instructor. With over 5 years’ experience in the British Virgin Islands, James knows every inch of this paradise, both on and below the waves.

James also had a 20+ year career in hospitality and tourism, including operating his own restaurant in Ontario. With his experience in hospitality and as captain and crew in various locations around the world, James has the knowledge to approach charters with high standards of care and safety. He is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and committed to upholding the highest standards of maritime excellence.

Chef Konstantins “Koko” Kovalcuks With a passion for cooking and creating, Koko has worked as a Chef for more than 15 years. Pairing his skills with a love of travel, he has worked in restaurants from Greece to the French Alps, and Isles of Scilly in the United Kingdom.

Koko loves adventure and keeping active and enjoys swimming, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and many other sports. He loves to pick up new skills and is multilingual, always interested in learning new languages and new cultures, particularly about their cuisine to incorporate into his cooking. Working in the yachting industry enables him to have freedom to create unique and interesting dishes using the finest ingredients and tailoring each meal to guest preferences. Presentation and plating is something he is also passionate about – eager to WOW the guests with his Insta-worthy dishes!

Stewardess Elisha Rose Rowley Elisha has worked in Front of House and Hospitality for her entire career, including more than five years as a Bar Supervisor and a VIP Lounge Host in a busy theatre. There she provided impeccable and personal service to the VIP Theatre patrons. Her experience managing and hosting Gala Nights and Press Events for big touring shows with high profile guests honed her organizational skills and attention to detail. With her love for the sea and traveling she joined the Yachting industry in 2022. Since then, she has worked as a Stewardess on large motor yachts. Her passion is mixology and creating show-stopper cocktails with all the garnishes!

She is very artistic and creative, and loves to do pottery and paint. She presents her creative flair with her table decor during meal service. Elisha loves adventure and exploring on the sea but instead of swimming you’ll probably find her floating on a giant inflatable unicorn. Working in the Yachting industry and engaging with guests is what Elisha loves the most. Meeting new people and providing them with an unforgettable experience on-board is her goal.

All scuba activities are dependent on itinerary and weather conditions. Dive Instructor can lead max of 5 divers at one time. No diving first or last day of charter.

Seven carries 6 BCD and regulator sets, weights, compressed air tanks for complementary use. Should guests require alternate sizing, or specialized equipment we will connect them with local dive shop.

Seven offers up to 3 dives for certified divers, gear included.

Additional dives $50 /per diver, arranged directly with captain.

Luxury Crewed Charter Rates

The Horizon Yacht Charters BVI Crewed Charter rates are for 7 nights per vessel and are based on the number of guests. Please see individual yacht pages for detailed specifications and charter rates. Horizon Yacht Charters luxury crewed yacht charters come complete with your own personal Captain & Chef (and in the larger yachts, first mate and hostess).  NB some yachts may be skipper only (with the option of a chef) – they are stated as such. Your meals aboard are included in the rate and prepared to your group’s individual preferences and dietary requirements. Beverages are also included but please note special requests for specific brands may be subject to an additional charge.  Watersports equipment (such as paddleboards, kayaks etc) are also included and some yachts offer all-inclusive diving.

High season rates typically apply from December to April, and Low season from May to November, but please do check the seasonal rates for your yacht.

Each individual crewed yacht may charge for certain additional expenses (e.g. National Park Permit, Cruising permit, different port collections or departures).  Please ask for a full breakdown of costs for your chosen yacht. Additional supplements may apply at Christmas and New Year.

All yachts come with tenders with outboards and safety equipment. Please review the individual yacht specification on our website for further details of available equipment and details of inclusions and exclusions.

Yacht photographs and specifications act as a guide and are for information purposes only.  Although we endeavour to ensure that images are accurate reflections of the yachts in our fleet, certain aspects may vary slightly.

Charter Rates shown above are for 7 nights per vessel (Christmas and New Year supplements on selected yachts). Crewed Charters usually start at noon and finish at noon, but please do check times for your particular yacht.

An Environmental levy of $10 per head is payable by all visitors to the BVI on arrival (effective 1st Sept 2017).

Bookings and Cancellations  – We require a 50% deposit to confirm the reservation and the balance due of 50% no later than 45 days prior to charter start date. A smaller deposit and interim fee may be acceptable for bookings made more than 12 months in advance. Cancellation fees apply, and vary from yacht-to-yacht. Please check the specific terms for your yacht at the time of booking.

Presented by DMA Yachting, the impressive charter yacht VOYAGE 590e is a 59 ft sailing catamaran. The main attractions of VOYAGE 590e are her most appealing features and interconnection with the sea. VOYAGE 590e spends the summer and winter season in US Virgin Islands. She was constructed by the ship builder VOYAGE yacht in 2020. The ingenious yacht layout features 6 cozy cabins and comfortably accommodates a group of 12 guests.

VOYAGE 590e is classified primarily as a sailing catamaran. The the heart of the yacht is the main saloon, which connects to the aft deck. The aft deck features a variety of seating areas and usually it where you, as a charter guest, spend most of your time.
