Free bus services, shuttle trains: Alternative travel options amid MRT disruption on EWL

wts travel jurong east

SINGAPORE – If you are affected by the MRT service disruption on the East-West Line (EWL) which has entered its second day on Sept 26, you can consider the following alternative travel arrangements.

As train services between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations remain unavailable, transport operator SMRT has arranged for free bridging bus services between these two stops.

Free regular bus services are also available between Boon Lay and Queenstown stations, covering the nine-station stretch first affected by a traction power fault that occurred on the morning of Sept 25.

Commuters can also take the shuttle train that is running at 10-minute intervals between Boon Lay and Jurong East stations, and between Queenstown and Buona Vista stations.

SMRT advised those travelling towards the city centre to take the North-South Line via Jurong East, Woodlands and Bishan; the Thomson-East Coast Line via Woodlands and Caldecott; and the Downtown Line via Botanic Gardens.

To get on the Circle Line, commuters can alight at Queenstown and take the shuttle train to Buona Vista.

To transfer to the North-South Line, they can alight at Boon Lay and take the shuttle train to Jurong East.

The transport operator urged commuters to follow updates on its official social media channels.

“We are deeply sorry and thank all commuters for their understanding and patience, as we do our best to recover train services on the affected stretch of the East-West Line,” SMRT said in an update on Facebook at 9.20pm on Sept 25.

Those who wished to book a ride to Buona Vista MRT station via Grab, Gojek and ComfortDelGro might have encountered difficulties in the morning.

Between 9.30am and 11am, The Straits Times was unable to book a ride to the station on these ride-hailing apps.

A pop-up message on Grab said Buona Vista station was “inaccessible due to a public event”, while the message on Gojek said there was an “emergency in the area”. ComfortDelGro’s app showed that the “destination address is restricted from booking”.

As at 6pm, users were able to book rides to Buona Vista station with Gojek and ComfortDelGro, but not on the Grab app.

Amid the service disruption on the morning of Sept 26, commuters and MRT station staff also had to brave heavy rain which started at around 8am.

Many MRT station staff were seen directing buses to stop closer to the sheltered bus stop, so that commuters would not get drenched while boarding or alighting from the bus.

Some of them were also seen assisting a wheelchair user in alighting from the bus.

Plans for shuttle train between Jurong East and Buona Vista MRT stations dropped as it would delay full restoration: LTA and SMRT

Plans for shuttle train between Jurong East and Buona Vista MRT stations dropped as it would delay full restoration: LTA and SMRT

Plans to partially restore train services between Jurong East and Buona Vista MRT stations on Friday (Sept 27)  have been dropped, to prioritise repairs for the full restoration of the East-West Line.

This was announced by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and train operator SMRT in a late-night media statement on Sept 26.

A return to full service is now targeted for Monday (Sept 30).

Earlier in the day, LTA and SMRT had said that they were exploring a single-line shuttle train service running every 20 minutes between Jurong East and Buona Vista.

In the statement, they said that they have since determined that while it could be done if they expedited repairs on one of the tracks, it would mean slowing down the repairs on the other damaged rail, as repairs cannot be done when the shuttle-train service is in operation.

Damage to the MRT rail and point machines between Clementi and Dover stations.

Operating a shuttle train could risk delaying full restoration by a few days, SMRT added.

“On balance, it is better to expedite repair and prioritising restoring full service earlier, rather than run a 20-minute shuttle between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations.”

A faulty train caused a power trip on Wednesday morning that disrupted travel between Boon Lay and Queenstown stations.

Free regular and bridging bus services remain available for affected commuters.

SINGAPORE: Regular train services between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations remain unavailable as the East-West Line disruption entered a second day on Thursday (Sep 26).

To help commuters navigate the disruption, train operator SMRT put in place these shuttle train and bridging bus services:

  • Bridging buses are available between Jurong East and Buona Vista MRT stations
  • For shuttle trains, they are operating between Boon Lay and Jurong East, as well as between Queenstown and Buona Vista stations
  • Free regular bus services are also available between Boon Lay and Queenstown stations

If commuters are heading to the city centre, they may consider three alternative routes.

They can travel on the North-South Line (via Jurong, Woodlands, and Bishan), the Thomson-East Coast Line (via Woodlands and Caldecott) and the Downtown Line (via Botanic Gardens).

To get on the Circle Line, for instance, commuters can alight at Queenstown station, then take the shuttle train to Buona Vista station.

To transfer to the North-South Line, alight at Boon Lay station and take the shuttle train to Jurong East station.

Commuters are advised to plan ahead as travel delays are expected.

For the latest on the situation, check for updates on the social media platforms of  SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA), as well as LTA’s MyTransport app.

Long queues formed at  Jurong East and Buona Vista stations on Thursday as commuters waited to board the bridging buses, faced with the prospect of being late for work.

The disruption also coincided with the first day of written papers for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).

Students affected by the disruption should inform the exam centre and continue making their way there, or to the nearest centre or school.

They should also approach staff at MRT stations if they need help with directions.

The Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board said students have been briefed on these arrangements.

It has assured exam candidates that they would not be penalised for being late due to train service disruptions.

“Candidates will be given the full duration of the paper if they reach the examination centre before the end of the paper,” a spokesperson added.

History of Tolyatti

The town was founded by Vasily Tatishev as a fortress called Stavropol to protect the territory of the Russian Empire from nomad raids in 1737. During the 19th century the town’s population hardly grew, and was about 6 thousand people.

By the 1950s, there were only about 12,000 people in the town. When Zhigulyovskaya hydro power station and Kyubyshev water reservoir were constructed, almost the whole town was moved to a new location.

In 1964, the city was renamed in honor of the General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party Palmiro Togliatti. In 1966, together with the Italian automaker FIAT, construction of the Volga Automobile Plant (VAZ), the largest in the USSR, began. In 1964-1970, the population of the city doubled. According to 1970 census, 251,000 people lived in Tolyatti.

Tolyatti - Features

City Day is celebrated on the first summer weekend. Tolyatti stretches for 30 km along the Volga River, and consists of three districts: Avtozavodsky, Central and Komsomolsky. Tolyatti is often called the “green city” because of the large number of green plantations and forests.

The climate is temperate continental with hot summers and cold winters. However, it is considerably mitigated by the Kuibyshev Reservoir. The average temperature in January is minus 10,6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.9 degrees Celsius.

Tolyatti is a large industrial and economic center of Russia. “AvtoVAZ” is the main enterprise of the city. Also there is an automobile plant of “GM-AvtoVAZ” company and a lot of plants producing various parts for cars. Chemical industry is well developed in the city - “TolyattiAzot”, the largest in the world ammonia producer, is located here. The plant supplies its products through a unique ammonia pipeline “Tolyatti-Odessa”.

The federal highway M-5 “Ural” passes through the city connecting the central regions of the European part of Russia with its eastern parts: the Volga region, Urals, Siberia, and the Far East. The distance from Tolyatti to Samara is 90 km, to Moscow - 991 km. Transit trains don’t pass through the city. Only two trains are available: to Moscow and Saratov.

Russian ufologists consider Tolyatti to be one of the most anomalous places in Russia. The number of unexplained facts registered in the city is dozens times higher than the average level in the country.

Attractions of Tolyatti

There are more than 160 historical and cultural monuments in Tolyatti - the city-building monuments and memorial boards. The monuments of city-building are represented by separate objects as well as whole complexes. These are the buildings preserved from the old flooded town and moved to the new city as well as those built in the 1950s.

Nearly half of all monuments can be found in the Central district. On Svobody (Freedom) Square there is a memorial with the Eternal Fire and the Glory Obelisk in memory of the locals perished during the Second World War.

Varvarinskaya Church, built in 1846 in the settlement of Fyodorovka, is of cultural and historical importance. The monumental and decorative composition “Prometheus” on the building of the House of Culture “Tolyatti” is among the most interesting sights (Lenina Boulevard, 1).

In recent years, a number of new monuments appeared in the city: to V.N.Tatishev, the founder of the town, the sculpture “Sorrowful Angel” - to the victims of political repressions, the sculpture to Nikolai Chodotvorets (Saint Nicholas), the dog sculpture “Verny” and a lot of others.
