Thomas Bjorn plays in Kenya

The European Tour travels to Kenya this week for the Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa, at the Karen Country Club in Nairobi.

With many of the European Tour’s leading players in Florida this week for The Players Championship , the circuit's lesser lights have a chance to shine as they take on the Magical Kenya Open in Nairobi.

Although this is the event’s first time on the European Tour, the Kenya Open is an historic tournament. It was first contested back in 1967 and was won by Guy Wolstenholme. It was a fixture on the European Challenge Tour from 1991 until last season. Past winners of the event include: Seve Ballesteros, Brian Barnes, Ken Brown, Ian Woosnam and Trevor Immelman.

This week, 15-time European Tour winner and 2018 Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn headlines the field, alongside rising stars Shubhankar Sharma and Renato Paratore. A strong home representation will also be at Karen CC plus a number of other African players who will be looking to score a victory. A former winner of this event, South Africa’s Haydn Porteous will be among the favourites.

Internet Sensation Hosung Choi

Internet sensation Ho-sung Choi will tee it up at the Magical Kenya Open as he brings his unorthodox swing to a European Tour event this week.

The course at the Karen Country Club in Nairobi dates from 1937, a Remy Martin creation, but the layout was redesigned by David Jones in 2015 when all the greens were changed from Bermuda grass to Bentgrass.

The weather forecast is for hot and dry weather throughout tournament week.

Venue: Karen CC, Nairobi, Kenya Date: Mar 14-17 Course stats: par 71, 6,922 yards Purse: €1,100,000 Defending champion : Inaugural event on European Tour – Lorenzo Gagli won Barclays Kenya Open on 2018 Challenge Tour.

Justin Harding wins Qatar Masters

Justin Harding – Fresh off the back of victory in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters , the South African will look to keep that run going in Nairobi. Currently 5th on the Race to Dubai standings, he’ll be heavily tipped to score back-to-back wins.

George Coetzee – Another South African who will head into this event with confidence and clear form. He was tied second in Qatar last week.

Adri Arnaus – The young Spaniard has been consistent so far this year and has shown glimpses of good form – an opening 67 in Qatar last week for example. He looks to have the potential to make a step up on the circuit and this event could give him the opportunity.

Key Hole: 18th, a par-4 of 445 yards, the finishing hole is a long and narrow one with a green that sits across the fairway, presenting a difficult target to hit from distance. Drives here should favour the left-hand side of the fairway and approach shots should avoid the rough short, left, right and beyond the green – the bunkers are preferable. The green slopes to the front for most of the part, but a tiny portion at the top end slopes away into the rough. This will be a tough finishing hole.

Darius Van Driel wins Kenya Open for first European tour victory

Dutch golfer Darius Van Driel carded a final-round 67 on Sunday to claim a first career win on the DP World Tour with a score of 14-under and a 2-shot victory in the Kenya Open played at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

Van Driel, 34, made eagle on the par-5 10th hole, immediately followed by a bogey, and three birdies in a solid final round after starting the day level with Spaniard Manuel Elvira , who shot a 1-under-par 70 on Sunday.

Elvira's older brother, Nacho Elvira (66), finished in a tie for second at 12-under par with England's Joe Dean (67).

Van Driel lost his tour card last year but came through Q-school to play in the 2024 season and has been rewarded for that perseverance.

"It means a lot. I never thought [winning] would hit this hard. It is a dream come true. I kept my emotions cool all round, but after that last putt it is all coming out," an emotional Van Driel said.

Van Driel already had two top-10 finishes this season and led after each round at the Kenya Open to become the first wire-to-wire winner in the 2024 campaign.

Ladies European Tour: Linnea Strom holds three-shot lead at Magical Kenya Ladies Open

Scotland's Michele Thomson fired a round-of-the-day 66 to move into tied-third, while Strom's one-over 73 was enough to extend her lead to three shots; watch the third round live on Saturday from midday on the Sky Sports Golf YouTube channel

Monday 14 February 2022 00:25, UK

Linnea Strom holds a three-shot lead over Nuria Iturrioz at the halfway stage of the Magical Kenya Ladies Open, while Scotland’s Michele Thomson charged up the leaderboard after a brilliant second round.

Strom followed an opening-round 68 with a one-over 73 in tough scoring conditions at Vipingo Ridge, where only four of the field were able to post an under-par score for their second round.

The Swede mixed three birdies with two bogeys and a double-bogey to head into the weekend on three under and the only player in red figures, with Iturrioz in second on level par after bouncing back from four bogeys in a six-hole stretch around the turn to card a two-under 70.

"I do feel like I actually played better golf today than what I did yesterday," Strom said, despite scoring five shots worse than the opening day. "Obviously I made eight birdies yesterday and only three today, so that makes a big difference.

"We didn't have as much wind on the front nine and just couldn't really get it going, then had a double on the eighth hole, which cost me a bit today. Overall, I feel happy with my game is at the moment, I just didn't get the scoring as good today."

Thomson posted the best score of the day by four shots with a bogey-free 66, birdieing five of her first eight holes and adding another at the par-four seventh to move into the group tied-third and within four of the lead.

Wales' Becky Morgan, Germany's Sophie Hausmann join Thompson on one over with Denmark's Smilla Tarning Soenderby, making her first start as a professional, while England's Lily May Humphries is tied-15th after rounds of 75 and 73 over the first two days.

Five things to know: Thomas Detry

Need to Know

Change Text Size

PINEHURST, N.C. – The name Thomas Detry might not yet resonate with casual golf fans, but he’s far from a Cinderella story.

Detry, 31, will contend into the weekend at the U.S. Open, after opening the week in 1-under 69 at Pinehurst No. 2. He charged up the leaderboard in Friday's second round with a 3-under 67 to head into the weekend at 4-under. The Belgian hasn’t yet won on the PGA TOUR or DP World Tour, but his career trajectory has steadily built to this point. Detry entered the U.S. Open at No. 55 on the Official World Golf Ranking and at No. 28 on the FedExCup. His form in major championships has been trending upward as well – he finished fourth at last month’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, after placing T13 at last summer’s Open Championship.

Here are five things to know about Detry, who is positioned to tussle with major champions like Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama and Bryson DeChambeau – and other elite talents seeking their first major like Patrick Cantlay and Ludvig Åberg – on a star-studded weekend leaderboard in the Carolina Sandhills.

He crossed the pond to play college golf

Detry was born in Uccle, Belgium, south of Brussels, and he started playing golf at age 5. He also played tennis and field hockey, but golf moved to the forefront around age 11 or 12 – he started playing in international golf tournaments at age 13, and he was part of the winning Belgian team at the 2010 European Boys’ Team Championship; he also competed in the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup. His play attracted the attention of Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small – highly respected for his ability to develop talent – and he competed for the Fighting Illini from 2012 to 2016, also studying business management. He turned pro in spring 2016 and won on the Challenge Tour that summer to begin his ascent in the professional game.

He’s an accomplished world player

Prior to earning his first TOUR card for the 2023 season, Detry was a seasoned DP World Tour veteran. He hasn’t yet won on the circuit, but he has recorded five runner-up finishes and five third-place showings. He has steadily climbed the world ranking; he cracked the top 100 in 2020, and he entered the U.S. Open at No. 55.

In 2012, Nicolas Colsaerts became the first Belgian to play for the Ryder Cup’s European Team. Based on his career trajectory, Detry – who counts Colsaerts as a friend and asset to his game – is tracking toward becoming the second. No Belgian has ever won on the PGA TOUR; Detry has been close (he finished runner-up at this year’s Texas Children’s Houston Open), and he’ll have another chance to break through this weekend.

He earned his TOUR card through a now-defunct format

Detry took advantage of a prior qualification format to earn his TOUR card, qualifying for the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Finals (a three-event series that awarded 25 TOUR cards) by way of accruing enough non-member FedExCup points to have ranked inside the top 200 on the standings. Detry did so in just five TOUR starts, finishing T34 or better in all five.

This format no longer exists, as the Korn Ferry Tour Finals is now solely comprised of the top players on the Korn Ferry Tour season-long standings (no qualification via TOUR merit). In the final year of that system, though, Detry maximized his opportunity.

The Olympics are on his mind

He once set a guinness world record.

In June 2019, Detry set a record for fastest hole of golf by an individual, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. He played the 500-yard, par-4 10th hole at Real Club de Golf Guadalmina in Marbella, Spain in 1 minute, 29 seconds, in a video captured and posted by the DP World Tour’s content team.

Kevin Prise is an associate editor for the PGA TOUR. He is on a lifelong quest to break 80 on a course that exceeds 6,000 yards and to see the Buffalo Bills win a Super Bowl. Follow Kevin Prise on Twitter .

U.S. Open 2024 — Round 2 leaderboard, tee times, scores, news

U.S. Open rookie Ludvig Åberg will enter the weekend leading the U.S. Open after a second-round 69 put him 5-under par through 36 holes.

Åberg, 24, hit 26-of-28 fairways through two rounds to set himself up well on Pinehurst No. 2’s difficult conditions. Åberg, a college star at Texas Tech, swept the big three collegiate awards as best player in the country a year ago. He played so well when he turned pro that Europe made him the first player ever picked for a Ryder Cup spot before even playing in a major. Then, in his major debut, he finished second at The Masters in April.

Right behind is a group at 4-under with Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay and Thomas Detry leading the way. DeChambeau will play in the final group with Åberg on Saturday.

World No. 3 Rory McIlroy also remains right in the mix. He entered Friday tied with Cantlay for the lead at 5-under but shot a 72 in the second round due to a tough day putting to drop to 3-under.

Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 and reigning Masters champion, shot a second-round 74 sitting at 5-over-par. His crucial par save out of a tough bunker on his final hole turned out to be enough to just barely make the cut.

Leaderboard:

  • -5: Åberg (69)
  • -4: DeChambeau (69), Detry (67), Cantlay (71)
  • -3: McIlroy (72), Finau (69), Pavon (70)

Tiger Woods on if it could be his last U.S. Open after missing cut: ‘It may or may not be’

PINEHURST, N.C. — After finishing 7 over at the U.S. Open and missing the cut Friday, Tiger Woods said he does not know when it will be his last U.S. Open.

Woods has struggled to find form in his few PGA Tour starts this calendar year. He underwent ankle fusion surgery last April and continues to battle back issues that prevent him from adding more competitive opportunities to his schedule.

He was asked directly whether or not it could be his last U.S. Open.

“As far as my last Open Championship or U.S. Open Championship, I don’t know what that is. It may or may not be,” Woods said.

Headed into his final three holes at Pinehurst No. 2 at 6-over-par, Woods needed one birdie to drop to make the weekend in his first U.S. Open start since 2020. But the 15-time major champion couldn’t get it done, instead bogeying the 16th hole and finishing two shots outside the cut line with a second-round 73.

“I thought I played well enough to be up there in contention,” Woods said. “It just didn’t work out.”

Tiger Woods on if it could be his last U.S. Open after missing cut: ‘It may or may not be’

History of Francesco Molinari's aces

Francesco Molinari has three aces on the PGA Tour:

At the 16th at TPC Scottsdale, which induced an avalanche of beers thrown onto the green.

At Bay Hill the week he went on to win.

And now at the U.S. Open on his last hole of round 2 to get inside the cut line.

Francesco. Molinari. Ace.

Francesco Molinari just hit one of the shots of the tournament at the U.S. Open.

At 7-over-par, Molinari converted a hole-in-one on his 18th hole (the par-3 9th).

Molinari improves to 5-over-par, which is inside the cut line.

There is no known instance in U.S. Open history of a player making an ace on his last hole to get inside the 36-hole cut number.

Tiger Woods shoots 73, misses cut

Tiger finishes at 7-over-par

(Photo: Jared C. Tilton / Getty Images)

Tiger Woods shot a second-round 73 Friday at the U.S. Open.

Finishing at 7-over-par, Woods will miss the cut.

Woods hasn't made a cut at a U.S. Open since 2019.

Sergio Garcia likely making cut at U.S. Open

Sergio Garcia will be the first European player in the modern era to make the cut at the U.S. Open 20-plus times.

Tiger bogeys No. 16, making cut unlikely

Tiger Woods has been battling all day as he tries to make the weekend at the U.S. Open.

But with a bogey at No. 16, he falls to 7-over-par for the tournament.

It's looking unlikely that the 15-time major champion will make the cut.

Scottie Scheffler and the U.S. Open that will not bend to his will

PINEHURST, N.C. — It started with a simple question on a poor drive: Dude, what are you doing?

It progressed to a club flip, a visceral tossing of his putter five feet into the air and above his head. Scheffler’s par putt on 15, his sixth hole of the day, inexplicably broke left at the very final moment, and Scheffler launched his Spider Tour X in the air and turned in disgust without even an attempt to catch it. He let it just thump to the ground.

Soon he was talking to himself again. His tee shot into the par 3 17th went straight into the left-side bunker. “Maybe the worst golf shot I’ve ever seen you hit,” Scheffler told himself.

And this is all before he missed a birdie attempt on the second hole. He covered his face in sincere shock, walked to his bag by the next tee and slammed his putter in his bag so hard the special edition U.S. Open TaylorMade bag fell to the ground. Scheffler had to pick it up and frustratedly slam it back down.

So by the time the disaster hole arrived at Pinehurst’s fifth hole, by the time Scheffler’s greatest U.S. Open nightmare really appeared in the form of a double bogey, Scheffler was no longer angry. He was resigned to the reality that this was not his day. He had four more holes to get through. Four more holes to process his feelings on the likelihood he will not win his third major this week in North Carolina. He could sign his scorecard and talk to reporters in oddly good spirits, joking about his poor day and the ways Pinehurt’s native areas got the better of him.

This is where you should stop and be reminded we saw a foreign sight Friday. We saw Scottie Scheffler — golf’s No. 1 player, a juggernaut winning five tournaments in eight weeks, a man who recently went 10 months between rounds over par — in danger of missing the cut after a Friday 74, putting him 5-over-par for the week. One might call it history.

Bryson DeChambeau joins the broadcast

DeChambeau 4-under-par

(Photo: Tracy Wilcox / PGA Tour via Getty)

Underneath an umbrella in the shade, Bryson DeChambeau joined Smylie Kaufman on the NBC broadcast.

DeChambeau, who creates his own content on various social media platforms, was very natural on the mic.

He and Kaufman dissected various shots on the course. DeChambeau predicted that Ludvig Åberg had a makeable birdie putt on No. 12.

A few moments later, Åberg drained the birdie to improve to 6-under-par.

DeChambeau sits at 4-under-par for the tournament after a second-round 69.

Cantlay bogeys 12

After a birdie on the 11th, Patrick Cantlay follows it up with a bogey on No. 12.

Cantlay led the field in strokes gained tee-to-green in round one.

He's currently 112th Friday in that statistic.

Woods and Koepka having it tough

T82: Woods (+6) +2 thru 12

Bad news here for Tiger Woods , who bogeys the par-4 12th and that drops him to 6-over for the championship. Woods in serious danger of missing the cut now.

The same danger is growing for Brooks Koepka too, as he suffers a three putts for a triple-bogey 7 at the third. He’s now 4-over through 12 and looking pretty angry.

As someone has already joked, it seems unlikely he’ll be taking any questions after this round — having spurned the idea of doing so last night too.

Cantlay back to share the lead

Cantlay back to share the lead

Getty Images

T1: Cantlay (-5) E thru 11

Patrick Cantlay is back at the top, joining Ludvig Aberg at 5-under and with a share of the lead.

That’s thanks to a birdie 3 at the 11th, taking his time over the 5ft putt and even adjusting the line, before rolling it home.

Still, the leading mark remains here it was at the start of today’s play.

Where you need to be after Round 2?

Each of the last 16 men's major winners have been within three of the lead after round two.

26 of the last 28 U.S. Open winners have been within three through 36 holes.

Hot conditions + Ludvig Aberg in control: Notes from on the ground at Pinehurst

Hot conditions + Ludvig Aberg in control: Notes from on the ground at Pinehurst

A couple of notes from the grounds here at Pinehurst:

  • It is so hot. So hot.
  • If you’re watching the broadcast you’re going to see lots of people moving in the background. They’re going to air-conditioned club areas (if they have access) or leaving the property. This happens at most every golf tournament when the conditions are like this — the final couple of hours become a very intimate affair. It doesn’t help that most of the marquee names played this morning, so people got here early to watch them.
  • On the actual golf, saw Ludvig Aberg play with Dustin Johnson and Tony Finau. It’s remarkable how in control Aberg is for his first U.S. Open. He’s in a group with a two-time major champion that has a swagger to him, and Aberg is leading that group in swag. It’s really something.
  • We saw Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy go over the green on 5 from that waste area and be upset about it, but it seems like the right play. I just don’t know how you get a ball to stop on top of that green. Better to pick a spot over there you want to land, and then try to two-putt from it.

Cantlay double bogeys No. 8

Tiger Woods said before the tournament that players would be playing "ping pong" on the Pinehurst greens.

That's what happened to Patrick Cantlay, who double bogeyed No. 8 after taking three attempts to land his ball on the green.

Cantlay falls to 4-under-par and Åberg has a two-shot lead.

Leading/co-leading through 36 holes in U.S. Open debut

Ludvig Åberg is tied for the lead at Pinehurst No. 2.

The last player to lead or co-lead a U.S. Open through 36 holes in their debut was T.C. Chen in 1985.

Åberg, Cantlay tied for the lead

Åberg, Cantlay tied for the lead

Ludvig Åberg, playing in his first U.S. Open, is tied for the lead.

He birdied the par-5 5th to improve to 6-under-par for the tournament.

Patrick Cantlay birdied the sixth hole, moving into a share of the lead.

Balmy conditions at Pinehurst

It's so hot the beer line is almost empty and there's a 10-minute wait at the hydration station.

Pavon tied for the lead

A fast start for Frenchman Matthieu Pavon with back-to-back birdies to open his second round.

Pavon is tied for the lead at 5-under-par.

Joining Larrazábal in the field this week at The International are an array of renowned players including Major champion Danny Willett, PGA TOUR winner Matt Wallace and four-time DP World Tour winner Rasmus Højgaard.

Two-time KLM Open winner Joost Luiten leads the home challenge alongside Darius van Driel, a winner on the DP World Tour earlier this season, while a handful of players who competed at last week's U.S. Open are also teeing it up, including Tom McKibbin, Matteo Manassero and Casey Jarvis.
