Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Substantial passenger and cargo capacity, impressive towing ability, diesel engine option.
  • Unwieldy size, trucklike driving characteristics, poor fuel economy, high sticker price.

The Excursion's final year of production is 2004 so there are few changes from last year. Ford's excellent new 6.0-liter turbodiesel V8 replaces last year's 7.3-liter diesel. Besides offering considerably more horsepower and torque, the new engine has cleaner emissions and gets better gas mileage. Several new options are available; these include wireless headphones for the rear-seat entertainment package and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Body-side cladding and illuminated running boards are no longer available on XLT models. Also note that the trim level structure has been revised slightly, as base XLS and midlevel XLT trim replace XLT Value and XLT Premium.

Edmunds says

Unless you really need the Excursion's towing ability and huge interior, you're better off with the smaller Expedition or GM's Suburban/Yukon XL twins.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2004 Ford Excursion XLS Rwd 4dr SUV (5.4L 8cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in North Dakota.

No BS...What is your fuel economy: Excursions

  • Add to quote

I have a 2004 6.0L 4X4 Excursion with ~ 85K miles (newly purchased). I bought the thing to for the space and the f/e (vs. buying a newer Yukon/Suburban gasser). It is now riding on 33" tires with stock suspension (vs. 37" and 8"lift kit - for sale by the way). My fuel economy on the highway is right at 15mpg (meter/hand calced) drivng ~75mph. City is just a bit less. I have changed: oil, fuel filter, air filter and I am on my first can of fuel additive. At this point I am considering tuning and even a gear vendors overdrive unit (pricey but considering it). My wife and I love the truck but I thought mpg would be better. What fuel economy are you guys getting (average, city and highway @ what mph)? I am just trying to figure out is something wrong with my truck, were my expectations to high, etc.?

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

Economy Have a 2004 limited 4x4 with 2004 late year motor. Got 15-17 mpg going from central KY to okaloosa island and back. About 60% highway and 40% city. 75-95 mph, 4 adults, 2 kiddos, and a large "coffin" on the roof. All extra room packed to the gills for vacation. Also depends on who is driving. Wife gets avg 1.5-3 mpg less than I do. We get @12-13 in town, Home hwy @15-16.:thumb:

Thats all your going to get IMO..lowering RPM will make it drop these 6.0 like RPM

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

Yep my 6.0 loves it right around 2k rpms

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

dont know what mine is never really cared enough to figure it out. I am going to put diesel in it regardless. If i am going on a long trip i try to stay under 2k it saves the fuel gauge from moving down as quick.

Did a bit of testing today...tried cruising highway at 60mph or 1600rpm...car did 20.5mpg over 20 miles. Looks like my engine likes to operate below 1600. Looks like I need to invest in a gear vendors unit since my wife likes to do 70-80 mph on the highway. I cant believe 10mph or 500rpm makes that much of a difference.

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

yeah, on the highway once you get above about 2k RPM the fuel economy starts to drop off significantly. You might look into lowering your final drive ratio by changing gears. I'm not sure what is in your Ex now but if you have 3.73 or bigger then you can probably go smaller and get better highway mileage, and it'll be cheaper than the gear vendors unit.

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

You might also consider running an SCT tuner with a hot race file (custom file) on your long trips provided you're not towing anything. If you can keep your foot out of it, Ie: no hot rodding, you should see a couple mpgs gain from that alone. In my experience just adding a tuner and running a low power file doesn't do anything to improve fuel mileage, but running big race files and taking it easy will do wonders. Also FWIW, I've seen about a 1 mpg increase just using diesel kleen fuel additive from powerservice.

Its hard to tell by the various posts on this site, but who are the good tuners/vendors purchase an SCT/Custom files from?

I run Innovative diesel tunes which are great. I've also heard great things about Matt Robinson's tuning at Gearhead automotive. Those would be my two top choices based on tuning and customer service.

mpg BONE STOCK 2000 model, 7.3, 2wd, 373 rear gear, factory tire size, 17.6 (by the pencil) on my last tank. I drove a pretty good mix of hwy/city on that tank. I run 70 mph or so most hwy, a touch over 2000 rpm.

Update: Put in some injector cleaner/additive and on my last 140 roundtrip, mostly highway, drive Ex did 18mpg @ 70mph. I ordered an SCT programmer and tuner from Matt&Gearheads, so hopefully I can get another 10% or so. After thinking about the cost/benefit of the gearvendors, I just cant justify it (may change my mind again). I am not sure how much margin is in that thing, but if they could bring it down to lets say $2K, then it would make it comparable to a gear swap and thus a bit more appealing. At $3200+shipping + driveline modification + install, you are looking at a good chunk of change that you will need years to payback....too bad, pretty cool device thought.

yep, thought about getting one of those installed back when i hauled cattle, but even with all the miles put on back then it still would take years to see any real benefit. definitely a cool unit, just way too expensive.

I consitantly average 20mpg. More on trips. I usually only go 60-65 Sometimes 55.

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

18.8mpg running B99 Bio

What speed? Update: - Used couple of tanks of Diesel Kleen - Currently running out the injector cleaner - Just started running Matt (Gearheads) SRL tune...love the way the truck drives now I am seeing 18+ on the highway (at 70mph) and ~14.5 city. So only a small change in f/e from the tune, but better driveability. I do need to do more driving to get more data points for more hand and DIC calcs. I am now starting to get over 320miles per half tank (mixed driving) whereas before, we were lucky to get 250. Note: 44 gallon tank. Note: I also tried the performance canned tune from SCT. For any that are debating, defintely do the custom tune. The canned tune offerred about the same economy but didn't feel nearly as good as the custom.

In a trip from Maine to Florida now. Just crossed into Jersey. currently is 21.9mpg

Now in north Carolina. 21.2 on the lie-o-meter. I'll hand calculate the whole trip once I get to Florida. But I spent about 5 hours in a parking lot between two states last night. One was literally a parking lot. Daughter sleeping on my chest, and wife too the dog for a walk roughly a mile up the road, and still didn't see what the hold up was. (Anyone traveling from new jersey to Delaware last night just after 1am knows what I'm talking about)

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

I usually get 20+ on the road (no towing) in TX while driving 65 t0 70mph. Of course it's mostly flat here in East Tx w/ some smaller rolling hills. The Lie-o-meter says 19.0 right now which is a mix of urban city and highway (100 mile) trips. Towing the Airstream it drops to 12.5 to 14.5. Tuners & Chips do wonderful things for the 7.3L!!!! D

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

The family and I just drove from Chicago to Tampa and back this past week in our 01 4x4 EX. We averaged 65 to 70 mph. The average mpg's was between 19.5 to almost 21. I have 4'' exhaust, tony wildman chip mostly set on daily for the drive, intake, gauges

00 Ex. 4x4. All stock. around 20mpg on highway.

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

My 01 gets 19 at 55 to 60 16 at 70 to 75 all stock 184,000 miles on the ticker. I only wish my 6.4 got that!!!!!

Why does my mileage suck? I am a little frustrated. I got my X in January and the best I have seen on the lie-o-meter is 14.9. I have hand calculated it a few times and come up with 10-11mpg. My F350 with the same mods is getting 17-19 easy so I can't figure out why the X mileage is so bad. It also seems strange that the hand calc is so far off the computer. And I always fill to the neck. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I regularly get 15 mpg. The best I have ever gotten was 16mpg and this was completely babying it driving 60-65mph. I never went above 75. All of this was mixed driving but primarily highway miles. How would you know if you had a boost leak or not? I am also suspecting I have dragging brakes. edit: This MPG was with dp-tuner's 80 Economy tune, pre-pump filter, 4" exhaust, and napa intake.

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

Around 15.5 with about 50/50 hwy city driving

I just made a trip from lou ky to cinn ohio an averaged 22.2 mpg at 78 mph. ill post pics, i had to take some to tease my mini van friends! btw 00 4x4 x ,4in exh, intake an ts perfomance chip.

Update: Did a few mods (see sig)...truck recently tracked at 20mpg on 140+ mile trip at 70mph...

Now that I added the Triple Dog GT Tuner I easily turn more than 20MPG. What a difference the tuner made. I was leaning toward a chip but didn't want to also install all the gauges. So happy with my EX now.

2004 ford excursion gas mileage

Honestly my dad had a 05 6.0 EX and he would always get 14-16 and complain about it. I drove it on a trip stayed at 68 and got 19.6 hand calculated. It had a AFE intake too.

I've managed now between 18.5-23 on the trucks overhead guage. But calculating after each fill up it averages about 17mpg. I have a 4"turbo back, hypertech programmer on full blast, AEM brute force intake and 35x13.50x20's. I think that seems more than fair. I drive about 100 miles a day, about a 50/50 mix of highway and stop and go.

This what my gauges look like .

Meet the Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5 Concept, a fully functional drift car that, according to our team in Sin City, has been doling out demo drifts in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Destined to be the flagship of RTR's Tactical Performance Line, the Spec 5 Concept is, in addition to its 5.0-liter Aluminator V8 engine, chock full of performance parts that you can buy for your very own 2015 Mustang. In addition to the Ford Racing engine, the OEM parts supplier has lent the Spec 5 an aluminum radiator and a close-ratio six-speed transmission. ASD Motorsports provided the front lower control arms, while the car itself rides on a fully customized coilover suspension. Magnaflow and American Racing have provided the exhaust system and headers, respectively. 20-inch HRE wheels, designed for RTR, are wrapped in sticky Nitto rubber.

This unique '64 Mustang was Edsel Ford II's first car

You probably had the same dream when you were a teenager. Your sixteenth birthday is coming up, or Christmas, or maybe both, and all you want is a muscle car to call your own. That dream has come true for some, and one of them was none other than Edsel Ford II. Henry Ford's great grandson turned 16 on December 27, 1964 - two days after Christmas and eight months after the original Mustang went on sale. And that's just what was waiting for him in the driveway, courtesy of his father (and reigning chief executive) Henry Ford II. The specially-prepared pony car had a pearlescent cream paintjob with narrow blue racing stripes, functional hood scoop, chrome trim, Euro-spec fender-mounted mirrors, a blue leather and aluminum interior, a monogrammed fuel cap... and a 289-cubic-inch V8 under the hood.

2014 Ford Cobra Jet announced with new colors, parachute mount

Ford's drag-strip-ready Mustang Cobra Jet is back for 2014, and it's sporting a few changes to make it even better - both in competition and while sitting still. Rolling off the assembly line ready for duty in the NHRA Stock or Super Stock classes, production of the 2014 Cobra Jet is limited to just 50 units. Racing upgrades for 2014 include the addition of a new three-speed transmission and a parachute mount, and while these will make the car better in the quarter mile, the Cobra Jet's new colors will make it look better tearing down the track. Buyers can now get their racecars painted up in Gotta Have-It Green or a custom, Cobra Jet-exclusive matte black hue. Ford and Ford Racing have already teamed up to make this an incredible factory drag racer with a full rollcage, massive Hoosier slicks, a race-tuned suspension setup and a supercharged 5.0-liter V8. Now, if only wheelie bars came standard... Unlike the confusing third-party ordering system announced for the COPO Camaro, all you need to snatch up a 2014 Cobra Jet is $97,990 and good timing (as the cars will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis). Ordering opens up next month with production commencing in July. Check out the press release below.
