After a 721-day hiatus, this weekend sees the return of aj bell tour of britain, a south-to-north voyage from cornwall to aberdeen spread over eight days of scintillating racing..

Here we’ve pulled together all the key spectator and broadcast info, riders to watch, and details of the team who will be donning the red, white and blue Great Britain Cycling Team jersey.

With eight stages spread over three counties from 5-12 September, there are loads of great opportunities to cheer on the riders from the roadside at this year’s race.

You can find full details of each stage here and key information for spectators here . Please note that while Covid-19 restrictions have eased across Britain over recent months, there will sadly be no spectator access permitted at the stage starts in Llandeilo (Tuesday 7 September) and Aberaeron (Wednesday 8 September), and there will be no public access to team parking at stage starts and finishes.

You can read more about the Covid protocols in place throughout the race here .

The 2018 winner Julian Alaphilippe will ride alongside Mark Cavendish for Deceuninck – Quick-Step, while Wout van Aert will lead the charge for Jumbo Visma.

Great Britain Cycling Team

Over recent years the AJ Bell Tour of Britain has provided many of the country’s most talented young riders with the opportunity to pit their wits against the world’s best, and the Great Britain Cycling Team will be back once again this year.

Tour de l’Avenir stage winner and Olympic debutant Ethan Vernon will be joined by senior academy riders Rhys Britton, Alfie George, Max Rushby, Will Tidball and Sam Watson on the start-line in Cornwall, and we can’t wait to see how they get on.

Get behind our UCI Continental teams

In recognition of the lack of racing opportunities in the UK due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year ourselves and AJ Bell Tour of Britain organiser SweetSpot issued invitations to all five of Britain’s UCI Continental teams – ensuring they could provide a guaranteed top-level racing opportunity for their riders and extend commercial partnership opportunities.

Canyon dhb SunGod and SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling will return to the UK’s most prestigious race having previously won jerseys in the event, while Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling, Saint Piran and TRINITY Racing will make their Tour debuts.

Each team is packed with talent, but keep your eyes peeled for Jacob Scott (Canyon dhb SunGod), James Shaw (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling), Tom Mazzone (Saint Piran), Alex Peters (SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling) and Thomas Gloag (TRINITY Racing), who have all been in great form of late.

Share your support

If you're out with the family, or want to tell us how great your region is, you can share your day in the life throughout the stages via our link which may be featured on social media.

Dates Confirmed for the 2022 AJ BELL Tour of Britain

by Anna Magrath | Oct 5, 2021 | 0 comments

a j bell tour of britain

**PRESS RELEASE**

The dates for the 2022 edition of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain have today been confirmed, with the 18 th edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race scheduled for Sunday 4 to Sunday 11 September.

Already confirmed for the 2022 route is an overall start hosted by Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, following the success of the final stage of this year’s race, and a final stage on the Isle of Wight for the first time.

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events , said: “The Tour of Britain is a key part of EventScotland’s annual portfolio of world-class events and it is great to have it returning to Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in 2022 after the success of this year’s final stage.

“Scotland is the perfect stage for events and our long-term partnership with the Tour of Britain is the ideal platform to showcase what Scotland has to offer as we build towards host the first-ever UCI Cycling World Championships in 2023.”

Aberdeen City Council leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: “As a city we look forward with great anticipation to providing the starting point for next year’s race. The excitement of this year’s event is still being felt across the region – and the economic and cultural benefits will carry long into the future. It was a thrilling experience to be present for this year’s finish on the Beach Esplanade, among thousands of cheering spectators, savouring world-class sporting competition up close. As a council we have been building our events offering and investing in supporting infrastructure, so we can expect next year’s Tour of Britain to enjoy a flying start in Aberdeen.”

Cllr Andy Kille is the leader of Aberdeenshire Council . He said: “Aberdeenshire got behind the riders at the 2021 event in huge numbers and the positivity that the Tour of Britain created will have had lasting impacts on cycling, wellbeing, and tourism for this area. It is great to see the momentum being maintained, with work already starting to make 2022 just as spectacular. We are all looking forward to welcoming the riders and the teams back here next year, and I feel sure they will also be looking forward to making a return.”

Isle of Wight Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, Member for regeneration and tourism , said; “This is a great opportunity to showcase the Island and everything we have to offer on live national and international TV through the power of sport. The Isle of Wight is well known for its sailing heritage and it’s also a brilliant place to ride a bike thanks to the unique and distinctive coastline and scenery. As well as providing a welcome boost to the local economy, the Tour of Britain is a fantastic sports event that inspires more people to get out on their own bikes, which is great for everyone’s health and wellbeing. We will be working closely with the Tour organisers and other partners over the coming months to prepare for the event.”

Nottinghamshire will also host a midweek stage of the race as the AJ Bell Tour of Britain returns to the county for the first time since 2018.  More details of the 2022 event will be announced in the coming weeks ahead of the launch of the route in spring next year.

Commenting on the news, Mick Bennett, Race Director of organisers SweetSpot said; “This year’s race will live long in the memory but work is already well underway on the 2022 Tour.  With the overall start in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and our first ever Isle of Wight stage to conclude the race it will be another memorable edition of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain.”

British Cycling’s Head of Sport and Major Events, Jonathan Day , said: “This year’s AJ Bell Tour of Britain will be fondly remembered for many years to come, with its fantastic route, buoyant crowds and a nail-biting GC battle showing off the very best of our sport.

“We’re incredibly excited to work alongside the team at SweetSpot to make the 2022 race even better still, taking it to more of Britain’s communities, supporting our ambition to lead the sport and inspiring the next generation.”

The event attracts global cycling superstars including Tour de France winners, Olympic gold medallists and world champions, with each stage being shown across the world via live TV coverage and highlights on ITV4 and Eurosport.

Alongside this first-class, free-to-watch sporting event, a host of community activities and entertainment will also be on offer, details of which will follow.

To get involved and catch the high-speed action coming through our towns and villages, the current projected timings are as follows. Please note, these are a guide only and the race could progress slower or quicker than expected, therefore spectators are advised to arrive early:

Road closures, parking restrictions and bus suspensions

The race will involve riders cycling along in a peloton - essentially a bubble of cyclists with police and moto-marshal motorcycles at the front and back. For the safety of competitors, a rolling road closure will be implemented and managed by Community Traffic Management and moto-marshals, under the control of the police.

The rolling closure will mean traffic will be stopped for around 25 minutes to allow the ‘bubble’ to pass through safely. Inevitably, this will cause some disruption to those travelling during this time; however, both the traffic management company staff and police will aim to get traffic moving as soon as it is safe to do so.

During certain points in the race, cyclists expect to hit speeds of around 50mph. For this reason, the race route must be kept clear of parked vehicles. The roads used on the route will be covered by a 'Clearway Order' issued by the Highways Department and it is requested that residents and visitors park their vehicles off the race route roads on the day of the race, between the hours of 9am – 3pm.

Affected residents are being contacted directly by post.

To accommodate the start, Redcar Esplanade will be closed to all traffic from 4am – 3pm , with car parking suspended from 00:01, on Wednesday 7 Sept. Residents and visitors are asked to use alternative car parking facilities signed around the town centre.

This will also cause changes to bus services and suspension of bus stops as detailed below:

  • During the closure of the Redcar Esplanade, between 4am and 13.30 the bus stops at the Town Clock Stands A, D and E, Regent Walk Shopping Centre Stand G, and the High Street East stops at the Claxton Hotel Stands Q and R will be suspended
  • Arriva service 63 will also omit the High Street East stops at The Plimsoll Line Stand P and Moore Street Stand M. It will be available at the Town Clock Stand F, along with the usual service 62 and early morning service 64 journeys.
  • Passengers for all buses except service 63 are instead being advised to use the stops at Regent Walk Shopping Centre Stands H and J, and the High Street East stops at Moore Street Stands L and M and The Plimsoll Line Stands N and P
  • The 10.35am and 11.05am service X4 journeys from Middlesbrough to Loftus and Whitby, and the 11.34am, 12.04pm and 12.34pm buses from Whitby to Loftus, will be cancelled
  • The 10.34am and 11.04am departures from Whitby will operate non-stop via the B1366 and A171 between Loftus and Middlesbrough
  • All other services, including Stagecoach Tees Flex, will operate as normal but may be subject to delay if they encounter the rolling road closures.

Full details about the bus timetables changes can be read below:

Some do's and don't's

For everyone’s safety and to assist your enjoyment of the event, there are some do’s and don’ts that spectators are requested to follow:

  • Do visit https://www.tourofbritain.co.uk/ for up-to-date information and projected race timings
  • Do remember the race progresses at a fast pace
  • Do plan your journey in advance - some bus services may be suspended or delayed so it is recommended you check with your travel operator prior to making your journey
  • Do listen to the marshals; their advice is for your safety
  • Do get involved: find out what is happening in your local area, invite your friends and family round, decorate your house/street/shop window or high street
  • Do support local businesses
  • Do grab a safe spectator spot and arrive early. If you can’t get to a start/finish location, why not find out where your nearest sprint points or steep climbs are?

Please:

  • Do not let dogs off leads at any point
  • Do not park on the roadside on the race route; find a safe off-the-road position
  • Do not stand in the road, even to get a photo; riders can approach at up to 50mph
  • Do not allow children to wander off; keep a watchful eye on them so that they can see the riders coming, with you
  • Do not cross the road once the lead car has passed; the race will be coming soon - at speed!
Laura Case, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s Head of Culture and Tourism, said: “We want to make this event safe, fun and a huge success for our area. We want spectators to be inspired, visitors and viewers to be impressed by what Redcar and Cleveland has to offer and residents to be proud to call this place their home.”

If you have any queries about the event, or how roads or public transport will be affected, please do not hesitate to contact Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council on 01642 774774 or email [email protected]

The Morning

A fresh approach to a crisis.

A group of researchers posited another explanation for the youth mental health crisis: too much discussion.

A top-down view of a child’s hands coloring in a “feel wheel.”

By Ellen Barry

She covers mental illness.

For years now, policymakers have sought an explanation for the mental health crisis among young people. Suicide attempts and psychiatric hospitalizations were rising even before the pandemic. Then the rates of anxiety and depression doubled worldwide.

Why is this happening? The social psychologist Jonathan Haidt points to smartphones, and the algorithms that draw kids away from healthy play and into dangerous, addictive thought loops. No, his critics say. The real problem is a grim social landscape of school shootings, poverty and global warming. Or academic pressure. Or insufficient health care.

A group of researchers in Britain now propose another, at least partial, explanation: We talk about mental disorders so much. I cover this notion in a story The Times published today .

This hypothesis is called “prevalence inflation.” It holds that our society has become so saturated with discussion of mental health that young people may interpret mild, transient suffering as symptoms of a medical disorder.

This is a problem, they say, because identifying with a psychiatric diagnosis may not be helpful. Students who self-label as anxious or depressed are more likely than similar students who don’t self-label to view themselves as powerless over the disorder, recent studies have shown. They may respond by avoiding stressful situations like parties or public speaking, which could make their problems worse.

One of the psychologists behind the prevalence inflation theory, Lucy Foulkes of the University of Oxford, traces her skepticism back to 2018, when she began teaching undergraduates. They were “bombarded” with messages warning that they might be in crisis, she said. “It seemed like the more we were trying to raise awareness about it, it wasn’t getting better, and in fact, it only seemed to be getting worse.”

She grew critical of curricula that teach children to recognize and manage their emotions, sometimes referred to as social emotional learning. Schools have introduced an array of programs, teaching children the basics of techniques like mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy, which have proved beneficial in adults.

Several recent studies have found lackluster or negative effects for students who received trainings, especially those who started out with more severe symptoms. That evidence has done little to dampen their popularity, Foulkes said.

An urgent need

Many experts in the field of adolescent mental health defend awareness campaigns and school-based trainings. “Especially with teens, we need more universal interventions, not less,” said Zachary Blumkin, a child psychologist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

The main reason, they say, is that traditional, one-on-one therapy and psychiatric care is not easily available. Teenagers in crisis can wait months to see a clinician. They often land in emergency rooms as a last resort.

For that reason, the field has gravitated toward preventive models. These teach all students — not just the troubled ones — to manage distressing emotions. A 2023 meta-analysis of 252 such programs concluded that, generally, children benefit from them. There is also promise in a more tailored approach , one that lets schools focus on kids with the most acute needs.

Some experts also disagree that over-diagnosis is a problem.

Andrew Gerber, a child psychiatrist, says we should think of mental illness as a spectrum: Disorders like anxiety or depression occur in a bell curve distribution, so they’re more like hypertension than appendicitis. And like hypertension, he said, they’re worth treating early in their progression, with medication and therapy. “Anyone who tries to define a sharp line between ‘real’ illness and what is not real, no matter where they put the line, is doomed to get it wrong and do damage in the process,” said Gerber, the president and medical director at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Conn.

Foulkes disagrees. Even when we have good treatments, we’re bad at identifying whose disorder is likely to deteriorate, she said. And some children struggle because something is wrong at home, like domestic abuse or poverty or bullying. Mindfulness trainings are unlikely to help these kids.

“A lot of the time, what’s causing the problem is not something that’s going to improve with medication or therapy,” she said. “You’re running the risk of just telling people they have a problem without helping alleviate it.”

A generation is growing up fluent in the language of mental health, something that will benefit teens who badly need treatment. But others may apply medical diagnoses to the painful, normal adversity of growing up.

The “prevalence inflation” hypothesis asks us to keep an eye on those excesses. People hurt after breakups and struggle to adjust to new schools; negative feelings aren’t always a sign of mental illness. They can even teach us resilience.

Rates of mental health disorders are rising among American adolescents. Read one 13-year-old’s story .

There aren’t always enough resources to support teenagers’ mental health. As schools search for solutions, some student-led clubs step in .

Are smartphones driving teenagers to depression? It’s complicated , writes David Wallace-Wells in Times Opinion.

ARTS AND IDEAS

The artist Frank Stella, who helped usher in the Minimalist movement of the 1960s, died on Saturday at 87. His career began during the Eisenhower era, when artistic tendencies — much like ideas about gender and sexuality — fell into fixed categories: one was either a figurative artist or an abstract one. Things changed, the critic Deborah Solomon writes, but Stella did not. “He never stopped insisting on the inherent superiority of abstract painting,” she adds. Read her full appraisal of Stella .
