Eat [ edit ]

There are some good places to eat around Ascot. If you want a good curry then the best place to go would be Mango which is in North ascot on Fernbank road. If you're coming up from London road, it is on your left. It can get very full even during midweek so it would be good to book in advance to get a table. If you don't want to eat at there then you can always takeaway the food.

Royal Ascot: An American’s Guide to Britain’s Great Horse Race

You’ve never been to anything like the Royal Ascot. High fashion and horse racing join together just south of Windsor Castle. And fittingly, this is one of the best and most predictable places to see the Britain’s Royal Family at leisure. Check the dress codes, pack your hats, and weave this event into your London holiday.

ascot travel

What is the Royal Ascot?

It’s a horse race. And a major event in the British social calendar since it started in 1911. Races run at Ascot throughout the year, but Royal Ascot brings in…well, the Royals. Top hats and haute couture abound.

Queen Elizabeth II has anchored this race for decades, attending every day of the five day race. She is an avid horsewoman and race enthusiast. Horses from her own private stables regularly run for the top honors. And her delight in her throughbreds, and the sport, in turn delights the British. Whether you know anything about racing or not, it is certainly an experience of a lifetime.

ascot travel

Getting Tickets

Tickets for all five days of racing are available online with Ascot Racecourse . They do mail tickets overseas and it’s obviously best to buy well ahead of time, not only to get your tickets in time, but also for the best deals. Price to get in start at well under $50 a person.

Which day(s) to go? Tuesday, the start, is arguably the best day. For fans of the sport, there are the most competitive races on the first day. Here for the scene? The first day also has the most complete collection of the well-known and immediate members of the Royal Family. Wednesday is less prestigious, and also less costly. You have a better shot at getting into the beautiful areas at a deal.

Thursday is ladies’ day and the fashion is full-on along with the prestigious (and long) Gold Cup race. Friday and Saturday see a pick up in the weekend crowd and prices. Saturday has the longest race in Britain to close down the festivities.

There are several enclosures of tickets to choose from. Unless you’ve got a special invite, forget the Royal Enclosure. If you’re looking for a party/concert vibe that happens to be next to a racetrack, go for the Village. The Windsor has a more picnic feel. The Queen Anne Enclosure is my recommendation for a full Ascot experience.

Taos Footwear

Getting to Ascot Racetrack

There are many convenient ways to get to Ascot, but none are easy unless you stay right in this small town and walk. Parking is limited and even if you’ve rented a car for your vacation, I would leave it and find a different way.

If you’re in the London area, you can take the South Western Railway to Ascot from both London Waterloo. It’s a little less than an hour-long trip BUT, expect heavy crowds both for the races and workday commutes. Go as early as you can and be ready to make some room. It’s less than a 10-minute walk from the station to the track.

Or you can stay in Windsor, as we did, just a 15-minute drive (normally) from Ascot. The South Western also runs from multiple stations in London to Windsor. The station deposits you a short walk from the iconic castle and many places to stay in the historic centre. If you catch a ride by 10.30a with Uber or another rideshare, you’ll have a pretty smooth drive to the course, particularly with a savvy drive. Wait until 11 or later and the minutes sitting in traffic will start to pile up.

ascot travel

How to see the Royal Family

One of the most exciting aspects of the Royal Ascot is the presence of Britain’s Royal Family, especially the daily presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Every day, HRH and honored family members and guests join her open carriage procession. It starts at 2 on the dot, and the carriages roll down the long track, through a tunnel and into the paddock behind the grandstands.

Tuesday is the best day to see all of the familiar faces, but Queen Elizabeth II has attended every day for decades. You’re good any day. My favorite way to see her was going to the paddock early and finding a place to stand. We had the high ground that gave us a great view over fancy hats and were not disappointed!

The other way, which has it’s own advantages, is to stand near the rail and see the carraiges at they roll by. Pro-tip, if you’re in the Queen Anne Enclosure, stand back from the rail. The apron is actually below the rail, and you can only see the tops of their heads from there.

ascot travel

Quick Guide to the Racing

Ascot is one of my favorite track experiences. The best tracks give you green space and places to go sit and chat and eat between the action of the races themselves. Ascot not only has all of these but has the classiest set up I’ve ever seen. Everything is clean, beautified, tasteful, and has space to breathe. There are only 6 races a day, far less than big races in the States that have at least twice that many. But there’s time between each to kick back, find food, place a bet, enjoy your time.

As with our driving differences, the horses in Britain are running in the opposite direction of those in the states. The majority of ticket holders don’t actually have a trackside seat. Instead, the crowd pours to the track as a race nears and finds a place to stand in rising steps or on the green apron next to the track itself. Then everyone filters back to the picnic areas and restaurants around the course.

Betting has a few differences too. In the US, if you place a bet on a horse, your odds will continue to change until betting for the race closes (when they get in the gates.) In Britain, your odds will lock at the time you made the bet. For example, if you place a bet on Not a Cow at 10-1 in the US (you win 10 dollars for every one you bet), but Not a Cow’s odds fall to 2-1 by the time the race starts, you get 2 dollars. In Britain, you would get 10.

The other major difference in betting in Britain is that there are more options. In the US, there are many windows to place a bet, but they are all running from the same company and with the same odds. In Britain, there are dozens of bookies with little, official stands and their own oddmakers. So you can shop for the best odds on your horse.

Must Do Experiences at Royal Ascot

There are some that are uniquely Royal Ascot and, for those from the US, uniquely British racing that you shouldn’t miss out on. Make sure to make time for these!

  • The Royal Procession – as described earlier, this is a special experience here at Royal Ascot. I wouldn’t even consider myself a fan of the Royal Family, not particularly drawn by tabloid headlines and documentaries. But even I got sucked into the moment and the enthusiasm all around me.
  • Pimms – We had a weird interaction on our first day with the bartenders. We asked them what Pimms is, what type of liqour, and there was wide-eyed confusion. The answer? “Pimms.” Grab a refreshing pitcher of the very British Pimms and soak in summer.
  • Tea time – even the concession style food at Ascot is so much better than tracks in the US. Far above cafeteria fare, all of the options were tasty and ample. The fish and chips stand, tucked in the corner on the other side of the bandstand, was great for a rainy day chill. And the second floor IS open to the public has several good food and bar choices along with covered seating.
  • Place a bet, even if it’s on a hat – If you want to take a spin on picking a horse, go for it. There are windows everywhere and they are all more than patient with betting newbies. Strolling through the stalls can be overwhelming if you’re not sure of how to place a bet but is worth the people watching. For any bets, know your horse’s number, the race number, whether you want to pick the horse to win, place (2nd) or show (3rd), and how much you want on the bet. OR, you can join the daily betters that try to pick the color of the Queen’s hat before she arrives.
  • The Great Sing-Along – I love the British. After each race day, they all gather around the bandstand, where a classic ensemble leads them through the songs. The Beatles’ hits shift to dirges that jump to a raucous Sweet Caroline that moves to “Rule, Britannia.” Flags are waving and hundreds of people, including those leaning over the balconies of the higher stories, are belting out all of the tunes. Hubs and I still smile and talk about those moments.

ascot travel

After Ascot

As with any major horse racing event, I wouldn’t recommend trying to grab a train or get in your car right away. It’s madness. Instead, find a pub near the course, snag a seat if possible, and have a few drinks. Don’t put it off for too long. Head straight over right after a sing-along or during it. The pubs near the track eventually fill to capacity, especially on Thursday. You don’t want to be the people caught trying to sneak over the barricades to get in. The best possible outcomes: you rest your feet, talk to a bunch of Irish jockeys, and then soak in the 70s boogie vibe. Getting an uber or catching the train becomes quite easy after an hour or so.

May the road rise to meet you, travellers, and may you pick the right hat color.

What should I wear?

The dress code is pretty formal. In the Windsor Enclosure, there is no set dress code. A few don’ts: fancy dress, novelty, branded/promotional clothing and replica sports shirts are not allowed.

Do women need to wear a hat or fascinator to get in?

Officially you don’t need to, but it’s kind of considered rude not to.

I’m used to the Stoke experience, but this was different. A little more fancy maybe. Loved the chance to dress up and act all royal, and even though the day didn’t end up like that, it was fun while it lasted.

We got frocked up and it felt fabulous! I’m not a gambler, but I had a little flutter, lost, but had a good time all the same. Couldn’t make the afterparty, but was a huge enough day without it. Next year I’ll trooper through.

Ate my picnic box and drank the Prosecco on the bus there. Lol. Spent a bunch on more food and drinks, but that’s how these events go, and I actually won on the last race of the day and got all my money back, ticket included, and then some for even more drinks at the after party.

I’m a native Englishman living in Spain and the first time I’ve been to Royal Ascot – and the first time I’ve seen the Queen – was with Stoke Travel! Haha, that’s a bit embarrassing to admit. But the day was amazing, the people we went with will become friends for life, and I was able to be the “toff” of the group, which was mostly Aussies and Kiwis living in London. Good times, great people.

John has been our family travel agent for over 20 years, we have always had great experiences using him for our trips. He is very helpful and knowledgeable and it gives me peace of mind knowing he will be available to assist should anything go awry during our travel. I highly recommend using John to help you with your next adventure!

We booked and had to cancel a trip to New Zealand within a week of booking. Weather issues. They were AMAZING! We are now off to Baja and they even offered to help with that, We are te I would say we were a BIG source of frustration since travel gents don't get paid a commission from the airlines anymore and we only pay $200 to help with the booking.

I've used John at Ascot for years! I think our first trip with him was in 2006 for our 10-year anniversary. He's always willing to go the extra mile and provide feedback insuring a destination is a good fit. Today I experienced why using a travel agent - specifically John - is so valuable! I'm in DC for work and flights have been delayed and cancelled all day. We are going on a vacation leaving early tomorrow. I was nervous I'd not make it home. He worked up alternatives (3, to be exact) just in case. He was also available through texting to provide a sounding board and to keep me somewhat calm. Luckily, I'm on the plane home. I'm thankful John was there to help!

Ascot dropped the ball, big-time. They were supposed to research a two-week foreign trip and get back to me in a week. After two weeks, I'd heard nothing. I called to check. My contact was not in and not due back the whole week. The staff member who took my call said they'd been short-staffed and that she'd come in to help. I went elsewhere and booked my trip.

King Charles Reportedly Plans To Attend Royal Ascot 'To Honor' Late Mother Queen Elizabeth II

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

This year's Royal Ascot holds special significance as King Charles III plans to attend in honor of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II 's love for the sport.

Despite his ongoing cancer treatment, the King is determined to witness his horses in action. His anticipated presence is also expected to boost ticket sales.

King Charles To Attend This Year's Royal Ascot

The Royal Ascot is a premier horse racing festival and one of the highly anticipated events in the UK. This summer's Royal Ascot holds special significance as King Charles intends to pay tribute to his late mother by attending.

Renowned for her love of the sport, the late Queen rarely missed a Royal Ascot during her 70-year reign, with her absence only noted once. Even in 2022, the year of her passing, she remained connected to the event, watching ten of her horses compete from Windsor Castle.

Originally expected to forego the five-day festivities due to his ongoing cancer treatment, Charles is determined to honor his mother's legacy and witness his horses in action, many of which were bred by the late Queen. His advisors, encouraged by his progress, are also making arrangements for his presence at the event.

A source close to the racing community remarked, per the DailyMail : "Racing is an important part of the legacy that he inherited from his mother and one that he treasures. That's why he will be so keen to go."

King Charles To Engage The Public Safely With The Open-Top Carriage Ride At Ascot

The 75-year-old intends to devote "at least" one day to the racing festival and plans to host an intimate lunch for a select "bubble" of friends and family.

According to the DailyMail , sources suggest that Charles may also make an appearance at Trooping the Colour just three days before the commencement of Ascot.

For those close to Charles, the Royal Ascot and Trooping the Colour represent ideal occasions for him to re-engage with the public. New protocols recommend open-air interactions to minimize the risk of him contracting airborne illnesses, especially considering his ongoing treatment.

The traditional open-top carriage rides at Ascot offer Charles the perfect opportunity to be visible to the public, while the enclosed Royal box provides a controlled environment, preventing him from inadvertently shaking hands with well-wishers.

"Ascot is the perfect event for his current 'bubble'-style distancing preferences – there will be lots of fresh air and plenty of chances to be seen by Royal fans who will be desperate to get a glimpse," a source familiar with the arrangements told the news outlet. "I would bet that he attends on Tuesday, the day of the King Charles III stakes."

A Horse Bred By Queen Elizabeth II Won The King George V Stakes Last Year

In 2023, the five-furlong King Charles III Stakes was named in honor of Charles' inaugural racing week following his ascension to the throne.

After attending all five days last year, the King was rewarded when Desert Hero, a horse bred by his late mother, clinched victory in the King George V Stakes.

Charles was reportedly visibly emotional at the triumph, with his niece Zara Tindall describing it as a "bittersweet" moment.

In response to the news of Charles' potential attendance at this year's Royal Ascot, Johnno Spence, CEO of horse racing firm JSC Comms, expressed his enthusiasm, noting, "This is welcome news for racegoers as it means he is on the mend and the King and Queen are a crucial part of Royal Ascot and horse racing in general."

The King's Anticipated Appearance At This Year's Royal Ascot Will Boost Ticket Sales

Spence further noted that King Charles' presence at the upcoming event would mean increased ticket sales.

He said: "Many people buy tickets to Royal Ascot just to watch the Royal carriage procession, and the prospect of seeing the King and Queen at close quarters is a huge selling point. I expect there will be a sharp rise in ticket sales now."

Spence emphasized the King's longstanding dedication to the sport since assuming the throne, adding: "Charles has shown commitment to racing since becoming King, and I am sure he will have some great horses running. The executives at Ascot will be absolutely thrilled to see him there, cheering them on."

The announcement of Charles' anticipated attendance at the Royal Ascot comes as he continues to make more and more public appearances following his revelation of an undisclosed form of cancer diagnosis in February.

King Charles' Increasing Public Appearances Delights Royal Fans

On Sunday, Charles and Camilla appeared in high spirits as they made their way to Sunday service at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral. Earlier in the week, the King delighted fans and tourists alike as he waved cheerfully from his maroon state Bentley limousine outside Clarence House.

Despite initially scaling back his public engagements after disclosing his diagnosis, Charles has maintained essential duties such as reviewing his daily red boxes and holding his weekly audience with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. However, he seems ready to increase his public appearances in the coming week.

Supporters welcome the prospect of a more active monarch, with one insider who spoke to the DailyMail stating: "The idea of a monarch cloistered away just wouldn't wash nowadays and will only create damaging speculation about His Majesty's health."

Another source added, "While it is too early to confirm things – and, of course, it is relatively early in His Majesty's treatment cycle – the patient is positive, the doctors are optimistic, and the treatments are incredibly sophisticated."

Britain’s King Charles will resume public duties next week after cancer treatment, palace says

King Charles III will resume some public duties next week following a three-month break to focus on his treatment and recuperation after he was diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer, Buckingham Palace said Friday.

The 75-year-old monarch will mark the milestone by visiting a cancer treatment center Tuesday, the first of several public appearances he will make in the coming weeks, the palace said. One of his first major engagements will be to host a state visit by the emperor and empress of Japan in June.

The palace said the king’s doctors are “very encouraged” by his progress, though it is too early to say how long his treatment will last. It didn’t provide details about what type of treatment he is receiving.

Charles will continue to perform all of his state duties, including reviewing government documents and meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as he has done since his diagnosis was disclosed Feb. 5, the palace said.

“As the first anniversary of the coronation approaches, their majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year,’’ the palace said in a statement.

Charles’ return will relieve pressure on other members of the royal family in his absence, which, coupled with that of the Princess of Wales, also due to illness, highlighted the challenges faced by a slimmed-down monarchy.

Amid the king’s commitment to cut costs and the decision of Duke and Duchess of Sussex — more commonly known as Prince Harry and Meghan — to walk away from royal duties, there are simply fewer family members available to carry out the endless round of ribbon cuttings, awards ceremonies and state events that make up the life of a modern royal.

The double cancer blow to Kate and King Charles leaves Britain’s royal family depleted and strained

With the cancer diagnoses of Kate Middleton and King Charles III, the ranks of working British royals have been depleted, leaving the monarchy’s future fragile.

March 23, 2024

Charles has been largely out of the public eye ever since he had treatment for an enlarged prostate in January. His later cancer diagnosis came as the Princess of Wales — one of the most popular royals — underwent abdominal surgery and later announced that she, too, had cancer. Prince William took time off to support his wife and their young family.

That left Queen Camilla, the king’s sister Princess Anne and his younger brother, Prince Edward, to shoulder the load.

The palace’s disclosure that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer shattered centuries of British history and tradition in which the secrecy of the monarch’s health has reigned. By disclosing his cancer, Charles breaks centuries of royal tradition. But he shares only so much

The palace’s disclosure that King Charles III has cancer shattered centuries of British history and tradition, but the royal withheld details of his illness.

Feb. 7, 2024

Camilla, once shunned by the public after the breakup of Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana, played a particularly prominent role during the king’s absence, standing in for her husband at major events such as the annual Royal Maundy service on the Thursday before Easter.

The return of the king will be a chance for him to reinvigorate his reign, which began in September 2022 amid expectations that he would modernize the monarchy, while reaching out to young people and minority groups to cement the royal family’s role in the 21st century.

Charles’ challenges include strengthening ties to the Commonwealth and the 14 independent countries outside the United Kingdom where the British monarch is still head of state, an unwelcome reminder to some people of Britain’s colonial history.

The king’s return is significant because it will help quell speculation about his well-being, royal historian George Gross said, citing an adage attributed to Queen Elizabeth II that the monarch needs to be seen to be believed.

“I think there is that feeling that it’s very difficult to have a functioning monarchy with the head of state away for any considerable length of time,” said Gross, founder of the British Coronations Project at King’s College London. “And this felt like a long time.”

Charles’ engagements over the coming months will be adapted as needed to minimize any risks to his recovery, the palace said. He won’t have a full summer program, and his attendance will be determined closer to the time of each event and with the advice of his doctors.

The summer months are normally a busy period for the royals with major events such as the monarch’s birthday parade, known as Trooping the Color, and the horse races at Royal Ascot.

Critically for the king’s safety, most of these showpiece spectacles take place outdoors, lessening the risk of infection for a cancer patient whose immune system may be weakened.

Charles’ return will be warmly greeted by the public, partly because he chose to publicize his initial prostate issue and then his cancer diagnosis, spurring many people to consult with their doctors, Gross said.

“The monarch has seen that he can do good by discussing health and raising the awareness of cancer,” Gross told the Associated Press. “I think that that’s at the top end of this. And that’s a very special thing when a head of state can do good. That’s immense.”

Kirka writes for the Associated Press.
