Government of Canada announces easing of border measures for fully vaccinated travellers

From: Public Health Agency of Canada

News release

The Government of Canada is prioritizing the health and safety of everyone in Canada by taking a risk-based and measured approach to re-opening our borders. On September 7, 2021, provided that the domestic epidemiologic situation remains favourable, the Government intends to open Canada’s borders to any fully vaccinated travellers who have completed the full course of vaccination with a Government of Canada-accepted vaccine at least 14 days prior to entering Canada and who meet specific entry requirements.

International flights carrying passengers will be permitted to land at five additional Canadian airports

July 19, 2021 | Ottawa | Public Health Agency of Canada

The Government of Canada is prioritizing the health and safety of everyone in Canada by taking a risk-based and measured approach to re-opening our borders. Thanks to the hard work of Canadians, rising vaccination rates and declining COVID-19 cases, the Government of Canada is able to move forward with adjusted border measures.

As a first step, starting August 9, 2021, Canada plans to begin allowing entry to American citizens and permanent residents, who are currently residing in the United States, and have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to entering Canada for non-essential travel. This preliminary step allows for the Government of Canada to fully operationalize the adjusted border measures ahead of September 7, 2021, and recognizes the many close ties between Canadians and Americans.

Subject to limited exceptions, all travellers must use ArriveCAN (app or web portal) to submit their travel information. If they are eligible to enter Canada and meet specific criteria, fully vaccinated travellers will not have to quarantine upon arrival in Canada.

To further support these new measures, Transport Canada is expanding the scope of the existing Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that currently directs scheduled international commercial passenger flights into four Canadian Airports: Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Calgary International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport.

Effective August 9, 2021, international flights carrying passengers will be permitted to land at the following five additional Canadian airports:

  • Halifax Stanfield International Airport;
  • Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport;
  • Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport;
  • Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport; and
  • Edmonton International Airport.

These airports, in cooperation with the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency and Transport Canada, are working to implement the measures necessary to safely welcome international passengers as soon as possible after August 9, as conditions dictate.

All travellers, regardless of vaccination status, will still require a pre-entry COVID-19 molecular test result. However effective August 9, 2021, the Government of Canada is adjusting its post-arrival testing strategy for fully vaccinated travellers. Using a new border testing surveillance program at airports and land border crossings, fully vaccinated travellers will not need a post-arrival test unless they have been randomly selected to complete a Day 1 COVID-19 molecular test. There are no changes to the mandatory testing requirements for unvaccinated travellers.

This strategy allows the Government of Canada to continue monitoring variants of concern in Canada and vaccine effectiveness. Using these layers of protection, the Government of Canada can monitor the COVID-19 situation in Canada, respond quickly to threats, and guide decisions on restricting international travel.

Finally, with the advent of increased vaccination rates in Canada, declining COVID-19 cases and reduced pressure on health care capacity, the three-night government authorized hotel stay requirement will be eliminated for all travellers arriving by air as of 12:01 A.M. EDT on August 9. Fully vaccinated travellers who meet the requirements will be exempt from quarantine; however, all travellers must still provide a quarantine plan and be prepared to quarantine, in case it is determined at the border that they do not meet the necessary requirements.

While Canada continues to trend in the right direction, the epidemiological situation and vaccination coverage is not the same around the world. The Government of Canada continues to advise Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada – international travel increases your risk of exposure to COVID-19 and its variants, as well as of spreading it to others. Border measures also remain subject to change as the epidemiological situation evolves. As Canada looks to welcome fully vaccinated travellers from the U.S., the federal government will continue to monitor the situation and provide updated travel advice to Canadians.

"Canadians' safety and security always come first. With rising vaccination rates and fewer cases in Canada, we can begin to safely ease border measures. A gradual approach to reopening will allow our health authorities to monitor the COVID-19 situation here and abroad. Canadians have worked hard and sacrificed for each other, and because of that work, we can take these next steps safely." The Honourable Patty Hajdu Minister of Health
"The health and safety of Canadians remains our top priority. Using a risk-based and measured approach to easing border measures will allow for non-essential international travellers who meet vaccination and other requirements to enter Canada. Working collaboratively with provinces, territories, Indigenous partners, and others to encourage Canadians to get vaccinated and follow public health advice is enabling us to begin welcoming more travellers back to Canada. Our government will continue to work with Canadian and international partners to ensure the border reopening is done in a safe and responsible way." The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs
"The Government of Canada recognizes that people have been anxiously awaiting a re-opening of the border to the world. We have been fully engaged with our American counterparts given the deep economic and family ties between our two countries. Today's announcement is another big step in our approach to easing border measures which is guided by facts, scientific evidence and the advice of our public health experts." The Honourable Bill Blair Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
"Thanks to the extraordinary commitment of Canadians to getting vaccinated and following public health advice, we are seeing improvement in the public health situation in Canada. As a result, today we announced new steps in our re-opening approach, including that international flights carrying passengers will be allowed to land at five more Canadian airports." The Honourable Omar Alghabra Minister of Transport Canada
"Thanks to the incredible progress that Canadians have made in our fight against the pandemic, we are now able to take the next step in Canada's gradual reopening of the border. We look forward to welcoming fully vaccinated Americans shortly, followed by travellers from the rest of the world in early September. Not only will this make a big difference for Canada's travel and tourism industry and all those whose jobs depend on it, it will also make it easier for those with a Confirmation of Permanent Residence letter to come to Canada and play a role in our recovery from the pandemic." The Honourable Marco Mendicino Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
"The easing of Canada's border measures is welcome news for tourism businesses across the country, the thousands of Canadians employed by the sector and the communities who rely on it. It has been a challenging year as we balance the need to protect both the health of Canadians and our economy but tourism businesses have demonstrated incredible resilience. Our government has been proud to be by their side since the beginning of this crisis and we will continue to be there as they prepare to begin to welcome vaccinated travellers from around the world to our beautiful shores." The Honourable Melanie Joly Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages

Quick Facts

  • To be eligible to enter Canada for discretionary travel on the basis of vaccination status, travellers must use the ArriveCAN app or web portal. Travellers must ensure that mandatory requirements are met prior to departing for Canada. In addition, some provinces and territories may have their own entry restrictions in place. Check and follow both the federal and any provincial or territorial restrictions and requirements before travelling.
  • In addition to receiving a full series of a vaccine authorized by the Government of Canada, fully vaccinated travellers must also: provide COVID-19-related information electronically through ArriveCAN (app or web portal) including proof of vaccination prior to arrival in Canada; meet the pre-entry testing requirements; be asymptomatic upon arrival; and have a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French (or certified translation) ready to show a government official on request as evidence.
  • A person who submits false information on vaccination status could be liable to a fine of up to $750,000 or six months imprisonment or both, under the Quarantine Act , or prosecution under the Criminal Code for forgery. Violating any quarantine or isolation instructions provided to travellers by a screening officer or quarantine officer when entering Canada is also an offence under the Quarantine Act and could lead to a $5,000 fine for each day of non-compliance or for each offence committed, or more serious penalties, including six months in prison and/or $750,000 in fines. Non-compliant air travellers may also be subject to fines of up to $5,000 for each offence committed under the Aeronautics Act.
  • Based on public health advice, Transport Canada has extended the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that restricts all direct commercial and private passenger flights to Canada from India for an additional 30 days (i.e. until August 21, 2021, at 23:59 EDT). All direct commercial and private passenger flights to Canada from India are subject to the NOTAM. Cargo-only operations, medical transfers or military flights are not included. Transport Canada has also extended the requirement related to third-country pre-departure COVID-19 tests for travellers to Canada from India via an indirect route. This means that passengers who depart India to Canada via an indirect route will continue to be required to obtain a COVID-19 pre-departure test from a third country other than India before continuing their journey to Canada.

Traveling to Canada from the U.S.? Here's what you need to know first

can american travel to canada without vaccine

ALBANY – The United States will begin reopening its land border to vaccinated Canadian travelers Nov. 8, marking an end to a closure that stretches back to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But those who live in the U.S. have already been able to cross into their neighboring country to the north since Aug. 9, so long as they follow a set of rules set by the Canadian government.

Among them: You have to be fully vaccinated for most nonessential travel. And you'll still have to get a test.

Here's what you need to know before traveling to Canada from the U.S.

Vaccination required for nonessential travel to Canada

If your travel isn't considered essential, Canada requires you to be fully vaccinated by the time you enter the country.

That means you must be at least 14 days removed from your second Moderna or Pfizer shot, or 14 days removed from your sole Johnson & Johnson shot. (The Canadian government also accepts the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has not been approved in the U.S.)

The 14-day period must be concluded before your first day of travel to Canada.

Unvaccinated travelers under the age of 12 can still enter Canada without having to quarantine so long as they are accompanied by a vaccinated traveler. If they are over the age of 5, they will still have to complete a testing requirement.

Testing required for travel to Canada, too

All travelers to Canada, regardless of their vaccination status or their citizenship, also have to show proof of a recent, negative COVID test before entering, according to the Canadian government.

And it can't be a rapid antigen test, either.

Canada requires travelers to take a molecular test before entering, which includes PCR tests. That will require some planning, since the time it will take to get your results will vary depending on location.

You have to take the molecular test within 72 hours of your arrival to Canada if you're arriving by land or sea. For air travel, it's within 72 hours of your scheduled departure flight.

The testing requirement applies to all travelers age 5 or older.

Had COVID recently? The testing rules are a bit different

If you had COVID within the last six months, the rules are a bit different.

Those traveling to Canada can show prove of a positive COVID test to be eligible for entry, so long as that test was from at least 14 days prior and as many as 180 days prior.

That's meant to cover those who have recovered from COVID and are no longer infectious, as well as those who continue to test positive long after recovering.

How do you show proof of vaccination to get into Canada?

With very limited exceptions, vaccinated travelers are required to use an application called ArriveCAN.

There, users can upload proof of their vaccination status before hitting the border crossing.

ArriveCAN can be downloaded in the Apple and Android app stores, or it can be accessed online .

What about unvaccinated travelers?

There are certain circumstances where the Canadian government will allow unvaccinated U.S. citizens to enter, including if they have a close family member (like a spouse) who is a Canadian citizen living in Canada.

But in many of those circumstances, the person traveling to Canada must commit to a 14-day quarantine upon entering the country.

To check if you're eligible to enter the country and what the requirements are once you arrive, visit the Canadian government's website .

Ontario  and British Columbia  are the latest Canadian provinces to mandate vaccine passports as a condition of entry to restaurants, entertainment and leisure venues. It comes a week after  Canada opened to fully vaccinated international travelers as it further relaxed its COVID-19 border rules.

Now the doors are open, tourists are gradually returning to explore Canada's cities, national parks, mountains, islands and forests after months of shutdowns. But across the country, public health policies are returning as provinces see an uptick in COVID-19 cases. So before you dig out your passport and jump online to book flights, here are some things to consider while planning a trip there.

Traveling to Canada? Here's what you need

The main requirement to enter Canada is for travelers to be fully vaccinated. Canada currently accepts the Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines from visitors. Those who are vaccinated can travel safely two weeks after their final dose, or two weeks after their one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Travelers will also be required to present a negative COVID-19 result from a test taken within 72 hours of their departure—regardless of their vaccination status—and must present the results before boarding their flight. They're also asked to provide their proof of vaccination, test results and contact information through the ArriveCAN mobile app , a web-based form or a paper form, within three days of departure, and some may be randomly selected to a screening at the border to assess their potential risk to public health.

If your proof of vaccination is in a language other than English or French, you must obtain a certified translation into English or French and upload this certified translation in place of the original document.

Can unvaccinated children visit Canada?

Fully vaccinated parents or guardians will be allowed to bring unvaccinated children under 12 years of age to Canada, but those children will still be required to take a COVID-19 test upon arrival.

Will I have to quarantine when I arrive in Canada?

No, fully vaccinated travelers won’t need to quarantine upon their arrival. However, the government advised visitors to have a two-week quarantine plan in place in case officials determine they don’t meet all of Canada’s pandemic border requirements.

Current COVID-19 rules in Canada

Province entry rules.

Lockdowns began to lift in late spring, but with the Delta variant circulating widely some public health measures are in place and generally vary between provinces and territories, so check the government’s resource page for destination-specific information. Newfoundland and Labrador , for example, require visitors to fill in an additional travel form before their trip, as does Nova Scotia (see here ). Also, it's important to be aware that some Indigenous communities are not accepting visitors at this time.

Vaccine passports

Hotels have reopened with enhanced cleaning protocols, and in some regions restaurants and bars are also welcoming guests for both outdoor and indoor service, though some have strict entry rules in place. In Québec and Manitoba , for instance, customers must show proof of vaccination to enter restaurants, bars, gyms, concerts, sporting events and movie theaters.

In British Columbia, people must be at least partially vaccinated (one dose) to enter restaurants, bars, nightclubs, gyms, and any indoor ticketed sporting event or concert with more than 50 people. That rule came into effect on September 13 and by October 24 the rules will be tightened again and you will need to be fully vaccinated (two doses) to enter the same venues .

From September 22, proof of vaccination will be required to enter similar venues in Ontario. Those eligible for a vaccine certificate must have both doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, which will allow them to dine and drink indoors and visit sporting events, cinemas and theaters.

Businesses in Edmonton are requiring patrons show proof of vaccination before entering their premises but the Alberta government has so far refused to implement a province-wide mandate. Gyms, restaurants, theatres, and clubs are among the businesses in the city introducing vaccine passports, according to CBC .

Children under 12 are generally exempt from vaccine passport rules. International tourists are permitted to show the proof of vaccination they used to enter Canada at venues where vaccine passports are required, along with their passports as a form of ID.

By the end of October, proof of vaccination will be required from passengers to board any domestic flight, interprovincial train or cruise ship.

Mask mandates

Some provinces have reinstated mask mandates including Alberta , British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Québec. Saskatchewan has dropped its mask mandate, and even though masks are not required in New Brunswick , Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador, they're still encouraged. So it's a good idea to pack a mask regardless of where you're traveling to in Canada as you'll need it for your flight, and rules may change suddenly so that it may be required on public transport and in some public spaces anyway.

Tourist attractions

Cultural spaces like museums and theaters in some provinces are limiting the number of people allowed at a time, installing physical barriers, and increasing their ventilation systems, among other preventative measures. Always plan ahead before visiting as you may need to book tickets in advance to gain entry.

If you're after Canada's famous outdoor adventure activities and extreme sports, you'll be happy to know that most of the major parks are open but be aware that access to some visitor sites may be limited. According to Parks Canada, "only those places where measures can be implemented to minimize health and safety risks will be open to the public. Changes to services or even closures may happen quickly as the situation with COVID-19 changes." Plan your visit and check the latest updates for your destination here .

Niagara Falls is open for viewing in Queen Victoria Park and most attractions in the area are open, as well as shuttles, restaurants and accommodation. Most hiking and cycling trails in Banff National Park are open for day use and many of the park’s campgrounds are accepting guests.

Skiing and snowboarding season is likely to be impacted by COVID-19 variants but we'll update this article as we know more. In the meantime, always plan ahead and check the latest public health advice in Canada as rules vary and can change with little notice.

The latest questions and answers about who can, can't cross the Canada-U.S. border

Some questions and answers about the state of the Canada-U.S. border, 16 months into the COVID-19 pandemic:

Q: WHO CAN ENTER CANADA FROM THE UNITED STATES WITHOUT HAVING TO QUARANTINE?

A: In addition to essential workers, international students and cross-border trade shipments, all of which have been allowed from the outset, fully vaccinated Canadian citizens, permanent residents and eligible foreign nationals can now enter Canada without having to submit to a 14-day quarantine. Canada also has limited exceptions in place for foreign nationals who are immediate family members of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, as well as a process to allow extended family members and international students to apply for entry.

  • Newsletter sign-up: Get The COVID-19 Brief sent to your inbox

Q: WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

A: Only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and eligible foreign nationals who have gone two weeks since a full course of one of the four COVID-19 vaccines approved by Health Canada -- Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Oxford-AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson -- are exempt from quarantine. Further, travellers must use either the ArriveCAN app or online portal to submit proof of vaccination, as well as the results of a negative COVID-19 test no more than three days old, prior to departure. Border officials will also want to see a paper or digital copy of vaccination documentation, and a certified translation of same if the original is not in either English or French.

Q: WHAT'S CHANGING?

A: As of Aug. 9, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents will also be exempt from the quarantine requirement, subject to the same requirements and restrictions as their Canadian counterparts. Fully vaccinated travellers from elsewhere around the world will be afforded the same exemption as of Sept. 7. Children under 12 who are accompanied by fully vaccinated adults can also enter Canada without quarantining on Aug. 9, but will be required to wear a mask in public and avoid group settings, such as school and summer camp.

Also Aug. 9, international flights -- currently restricted to just Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver -- will be allowed to land at five additional Canadian airports: Halifax, Quebec City, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Edmonton. The three-night mandatory hotel stay for air travellers is also being eliminated.

As well, the Canada Border Services Agency will no longer require every fully vaccinated arrival to submit to a COVID-19 test on their first day in Canada, but will maintain surveillance measures by randomly selecting travellers for testing.

Q: I'M A FULLY VACCINATED CANADIAN CITIZEN. CAN I TAKE A VACATION IN THE UNITED STATES?

A: It depends on how you're travelling. Currently, air travellers to the U.S. need only submit a negative COVID-19 test no more than three days prior to departure, or proof from a health care provider that they have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days. The same applies to entry by sea or by rail, with the exception of commuter trains and ferries. Entry by land is otherwise restricted, and the U.S. made it clear Monday that it is following its own timeline, and expects to extend restrictions at the Canadian and Mexican borders before they are due to expire on July 21, regardless of Canada's plan to further ease restrictions next month. Vaccinated Canadians travelling to the U.S. for less than 72 hours will also be allowed to take their pre-entry test in Canada.

Q: CAN I TRAVEL TO CANADA FROM INDIA?

No. Canada currently has a ban in place on flights from India, owing to the severity of that country's outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19. That ban is being extended to at least Aug. 21.

Q: I'M NOT FULLY VACCINATED. WHAT HAPPENS IF I TRY TO SKIRT THE RULES?

A: You'll either be turned away at the border or required to quarantine in Canada -- or worse. Violating the Quarantine Act by falsifying vaccination records carries a maximum penalty of a $750,000 fine, six months in jail or both, not to mention the possibility of forgery charges under the Criminal Code. Violating quarantine or isolation orders can also result in a daily fine of $5,000, up to a maximum of $750,000, as well as the risk of up to six months behind bars.

Vaccinated Americans can enter Canada starting Monday. Here are 11 things to know before a trip.

can american travel to canada without vaccine

Vaccinated American travelers will get the green light to cross Canada's borders on Monday , but the process won't be as simple as it was before the pandemic.

The country has implemented new health measures to keep the coronavirus at bay, such as asking visitors to provide additional documentation – including proof of vaccination and a coronavirus test – before crossing the land border. Air travelers also need to submit information , including coronavirus test results, before boarding a   plane to Canada. Falsifying information could result in hefty fines.

Travelers can also expect longer wait times, thanks to the new public health measures.

Fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents will be permitted to enter Canada for nonessential travel starting Monday at 12:01 a.m. ETD. White House officials have yet to say when the U.S. will reciprocate and ease its own travel restrictions against its Canadian neighbors.

For Americans planning to take a trip up north soon, here are 11 things to know.

Canada border crossing requirements: Travelers will need to be fully vaccinated

American travelers wanting to visit Canada by land, air or water must complete a COVID-19 vaccination at least 14 days  before entry. The government of Canada accepts the Pfizer-BioNtech, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD vaccines.

Cruises are not permitted to enter Canadian waters, but the country's ban on cruise ships with more than 100 passengers is set to end Nov. 1.

Everyone needs to get a negative coronavirus test

All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, will need to show proof of a coronavirus molecular test – such as a PCR test – to enter. Fully vaccinated travelers will not need to take a post-arrival test unless they are randomly selected to do so.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website has a list of  community-based testing sites for COVID-19 . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests travelers contact their health care provider or visit their local health department’s website to find the latest information on testing since the type of COVID-19 tests offered can differ by location.

Bring COVID-19 vaccine card, documentation

Travelers must show proof of vaccination  in either English, French or a certified translation.

Airlines will verify passengers’ vaccination status through the ArriveCAN app or website before passengers board their flights. Those driving across the border must use ArriveCAN before departing. Information must be submitted within 72 hours before arrival.

Travelers are advised to carry their vaccine documentation to show officials at border entry points and should keep their test results and a list of close contacts and locations visited on hand.

Travelers without documentation will be denied boarding, and those who try to cross land borders without the proper documents will be sent back to the United States.

Travelers who try to falsify their documentation could be fined or denied entry to the country at a future date, according to Denis Vinette, vice president of the CBSA travelers branch. Two travelers who tried to enter Canada last month were fined nearly $20,000 Canadian dollars , or nearly $16,000, after providing false information related to proof of vaccination.

"We've seen quite a few instances with individuals who've attempted to make use of fraudulent documents," Vinette said. "It's just not worth it.

Check for any COVID-19 symptoms, and be prepared to quarantine

Fully vaccinated travelers won't need to quarantine upon arrival, but visitors with COVID-19 symptoms  will need to self-isolate. All visitors must provide a quarantine plan.

You can expect longer wait times

The CBSA is expecting increased processing times for border crossings come Monday due to enhanced public health measures.

“The CBSA will not compromise the health and safety of Canadians for the sake of border wait times,” spokeswoman Rebecca Purdy told USA TODAY via email Tuesday.

Vinetteof the CBSA said the agency expects a 10% to 25% increase in vehicles trying to cross the border once restrictions ease Monday, which would be just 20% or so of pre-pandemic levels.

"We asked travelers to be patient but also to arrive prepared and knowledgeable of the requirements at the border," Vinette told USA TODAY. "It'll help increase passage and throughput and make the experience much more positive."

The agency’s website offers estimated border wait times at select land ports.

Dan Weingarten, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, added that the department will work to process traffic “as expeditiously as possible” through the state's toll plazas and border bridges.

“We anticipate any delays would be at the U.S. or Canadian customs checkpoints, which are not under our control,” Weingarten said.

While a CBSA employee strike threatened to further increase wait times for travelers crossing the border, strike actions were called off late Friday  after labor unions reached a tentative agreement with the CBSA.

Children, others who are exempted can enter Canada

Children under the age of 12 and unvaccinated dependent children will be allowed to enter the country with a fully vaccinated parent, stepparent, tutor or guardian who is eligible to enter Canada.

People with health conditions that prevent them from becoming fully vaccinated can qualify for eased quarantine and testing requirements but must follow a modified quarantine.

►Canada border: Canada to reopen its borders to fully vaccinated Americans starting Aug. 9

You may run into other COVID-19 travel restrictions

Travelers will be required to follow public health measures, including monitoring for signs of COVID-19 and keeping a copy of vaccine documentation and test results 14 days after entry .

Canada's government suggests mask wearing in shared spaces, and certain provinces – including Quebec  and Ontario – enforce mask mandates.

Travelers entering by air will need to wear a mask in Canadian airports and on flights to and from the country, regardless of vaccination status.

Some provinces impose  other restrictions. Newfoundland and Labrador  require a travel form to enter.  Ontario has capacity limits on organized public events, retail spaces, museums, casinos, theaters and more.

The country's national parks are open and welcome visitors, but access to facilities and services may be limited.

Airlines add flights to Canada

Airlines are adding flights to Canada to accommodate the anticipated uptick of air travel demand.

Air Canada announced a summer trans-border schedule with up to 220 daily flights between the USA and Canada starting Monday. The initial schedule will include 55 routes and 34 U.S. destinations, but the airline plans to restore service to all 57 U.S. destinations previously served “as conditions allow,” according to the airline.

United, which flies to Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, said it would add flights to Toronto and Vancouver in September.

American Airlines services four airports in Canada – Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver – and is set to resume operations in Halifax, Quebec and Ottawa in the spring of 2022, according to a statement in June.

Pricing from flight search tool Skyscanner on Fridayshowed airfares for August trips from the USA to Canada start at $329 for Vancouver, $359 for Toronto and $356 for Calgary.

Effective Monday, international flights carrying passengers will be permitted to land at nine Canadian airports:

  • Montréal-Trudeau International Airport
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport
  • Calgary International Airport
  • Vancouver International Airport
  • Halifax Stanfield International Airport
  • Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport

Canada hotel room rates are low – but prices are rising

In June, the average daily room rate – or ADR – across Canada's hotels was $125.05 in Canadian dollars (U.S. $99.61), down 31% compared with 2019, according to hotel analytics company STR.

Hotel room prices should rebound when border restrictions ease; STR expects ADR to hit $116.22 by the end of September, according to a June statement. The firm expects smaller cities and resorts to lead the recovery.

“International demand plays an incredibly important role in the recovery process, and we expect a jump in hotel leisure and corporate demand once the U.S./Canada land border reopens,” the news release read.

►More: Yes, room prices are higher. Hotel rates hit record high the week of July 4.

The majority of eligible Canadians are vaccinated against COVID-19

Canada's vaccine rollout had a slower start, but the country has surpassed U.S. vaccination rates.

More than 71% of the Canadian population  has received at least one dose of the vaccine and nearly 60% were fully vaccinated as of July 31. In the U.S.,  58% of the population was partially vaccinated and 50% was fully vaccinated  as of Friday.

US extends Canada border closure

The United States  extended border restrictions on nonessential travel last month, keeping its borders with Canada and Mexico closed through at least Aug. 21. The restrictions to entry affect land and ferry travel.

The move is meant to help the country decrease the spread of COVID-19, including the highly contagious delta variant.

International travelers who plan to return to the U.S. by air will need to get tested no more than three days before travel and show a negative test result or documentation of recovery to the airline before boarding, according to the CDC. This policy does not apply to land border crossings.

Are Individuals Who Are Not Fully Vaccinated Allowed to Enter Canada?

  • [General, SaveToPDF]
  • [General, ShowQRCode] ×

Immigration Bulletin

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, the Government of Canada announced various border measures to protect the health and safety of Canadians. Most recently, the government introduced additional measures in order to encourage more people who wish to enter Canada to get their COVID-19 vaccines. Effective January 15, 2022, some foreign national travellers who were previously allowed to enter Canada without being fully vaccinated will now be required to be fully vaccinated. This bulletin will highlight which individuals are still allowed to enter Canada without being fully vaccinated and will provide information on how someone who is not fully vaccinated may be eligible to travel to Canada despite this new travel restriction.

Which Groups Are No Longer Allowed to Enter Canada Without Being Fully Vaccinated?

It is important to note that the Government of Canada has recently made some changes to the groups of persons who may be considered exempt from certain travel restrictions. Prior to January 15, 2022, the following groups were able to travel to Canada even if they were not fully vaccinated:

  • Immediate family members over the age of 18 of Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons registered under the Indian Act if they will be visiting an immediate family member in Canada for at least 15 days.
  • Extended family members over the age of 18 of Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons registered under the Indian Act if they will be visiting an extended family member in Canada for at least 15 days.
  • Foreign nationals who are authorized high-performance amateur or professional athletes, trainers or coaches.
  • Cross-border truck drivers.
  • Temporary foreign workers in all occupations if they have a valid work permit or an approved work permit application.
  • International students over the age of 18 if they have a valid study permit or an approved study permit application.

Going forward, foreign nationals that are part of any of the groups listed above will need to ensure that they are fully vaccinated prior to seeking entry to Canada.

In order to be considered fully vaccinated, an individual must have received the full series of a vaccine or a combination of vaccines, accepted by the Government of Canada, at least 14 days prior to entering Canada. To date, Canada has recognized and accepted the Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson Sinopharm, Sinovac and COVAXIN vaccines.

Under What Circumstances Can Unvaccinated Foreign Nationals Continue to Enter Canada?

After January 15, 2022, foreign nationals who are not fully vaccinated will only be allowed to enter Canada if they meet the criteria for limited exceptions, which only apply to certain groups for the time being, such as agricultural and food processing workers, marine crew members, some children under the age of 18, new permanent residents, resettling refugees, and those entering on compassionate grounds.

To obtain an exemption based on compassionate grounds, foreign nationals will need to submit a request to the Public Health Agency of Canada to receive authorization to travel to Canada on one of three grounds:

  • To attend to the death of, or provide support to someone in Canada who is deemed to be critically ill by a heath-care professional in Canada;
  • To provide care for someone in Canada who is deemed, by a health care professional entitled to provide health services in Canada, to have a medical reason as to why they require support in Canada, such as assisting in a birth, providing elder care, or supporting someone during pregnancy; or
  • To attend a funeral or end of life ceremony of someone who resided in Canada.

Additionally, foreign nationals who are not fully vaccinated may be permitted to enter Canada if they can obtain a national interest exemption from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship or the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. The national interest exemption is intended to be used in exceptional circumstances only. As such, it is not meant to be a workaround for cases when a more appropriate exemption is not granted.

Furthermore, individuals who are not a fully vaccinated due to a medical contraindication to a COVID-19 vaccine dosage regimen may also be allowed to enter Canada, provided that they can provide evidence confirming this.

Individuals who are granted an exemption will be required to quarantine for 14 days and complete the arrival and day eight COVID-19 tests.

Moreover, the Public Health Agency of Canada has maintained its position that technicians or specialists specified by a government, manufacturer or company – to install, inspect, maintain or repair equipment as part of an existing warranty or sales agreement necessary to support critical infrastructure - may continue to enter Canada as they are providing essential services. As such, these individuals will continue to be exempt from the vaccination requirement and may continue to benefit from an exemption from the mandatory 14-day quarantine requirement. However, it is important to note that to benefit from this exception, the border officer must be convinced that there are compelling reasons, based on the public interest, for their entry to provide an essential service while in Canada.

If I Am Not Fully Vaccinated Can I Leave Canada?

Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals registered under the Indian Act are allowed to enter Canada without being fully vaccinated, but they will be required to quarantine for 14 days, as well as complete the arrival and day eight COVID-19 tests. However, effective November 30, 2021, Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals registered under the Indian Act who are not fully vaccinated are not permitted to fly on domestic, transborder, or international flights departing from Canadian airports unless they meet one of the exemptions to the vaccine requirement. Exemptions include:

  • travel from remote communities
  • travel for essential medical services and treatment
  • emergency and urgent travel (including for urgent medical reasons)
  • other exceptional travel in the national interest
  • medical inability to be vaccinated
  • sincere religious belief

This means Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals registered under the Indian Act cannot leave Canada without proof of vaccination unless they meet one of the above exemptions to the vaccine requirement or they can leave Canada through the United States if they are also a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

The requirement to be fully vaccinated in order to leave Canada also applies to temporary residents, such as workers, students and visitors. The Government of Canada has a temporary transitional measures for unvaccinated foreign national travellers who normally reside outside of Canada and who entered Canada prior to October 30, 2021, they can leave Canada by February 28, 2022 with a valid COVID-19 test at the time of travel. After February 28, 2022, temporary residents would need to be fully vaccinated in order to leave Canada by plane unless they meet one of the exemptions to the vaccine requirement.

Foreign nationals who are fully vaccinated are generally allowed to travel to Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic, subject to meeting regular admissibility requirements. Conversely, foreign nationals who are not fully vaccinated may enter Canada if they meet one of the limited exemptions to the vaccine requirement. Even valid work permit holders will need to ensure they are fully vaccinated before seeking entry to Canada.

Canada also requires proof of full vaccination from foreign nationals to fly on domestic, transborder, or international flights departing from Canadian airports unless they meet one of the exemptions to the vaccine requirement. As such, foreign nationals who are not fully vaccinated need to ensure they can enter and leave Canada without proof of fully vaccination.

New immigration policies could continue to be introduced with short notice in order to manage the COVID-19 situation in Canada. Accordingly, in order to prevent delays in your global mobility plan it is recommended that you contact your legal immigration counsel as early as possible. If you have any questions regarding how the current immigration policies may apply to your company, please contact Daniel Lee or Stephanie Heinsohn-Spiropoulos.

Vaccinated travelers can now enter Canada without a COVID-19 test

Sean Cudahy

It's a milestone weekend for pandemic-era travel in North America. This is the first weekend vaccinated travelers can freely enter Canada without needing to submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test. The change, which took effect Friday, means simpler travel for visitors flying into Canada to visit one of the country's many tourist destinations. It also means far easier land crossings for those living close to the border.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

TPG reported last month on the Canadian government's plans to remove the testing requirements, effective April 1. As the changes took effect Friday, some airlines and travel advocates took to social media to celebrate and remind visitors of the new, relaxed policies. Air Canada tweeted that traveling to Canada just got easier.

Because the U.S. still requires a negative COVID-19 test for travelers returning home from abroad, the relaxed regulations on Canada's end will require fewer elements to worry about for a trip north of the border instead. Because of that, there's a good chance more travelers are seizing the opportunity to book a flight there in the very near future or perhaps drive north this weekend!

The new process

The relaxed testing requirements apply only to visitors who are fully vaccinated. Partially vaccinated or unvaccinated visitors entering Canada must still submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

Despite the changes, all visitors must still enter their information into the ArriveCAN app, which is the portal the Canadian government has been using throughout the pandemic for the intake of visitor information.

But it's also possible that vaccinated visitors will end up having to undergo a test anyway. Canadian officials said they would still conduct some random testing of visitors as part of an effort to monitor COVID-19 trends among travelers. However, those randomly tested will not have to quarantine while they wait for a result.

"Red carpet" rolled out for visitors

After nearly two years with "close to zero" tourism dollars coming in from the U.S., Jim Diodati, mayor of Niagara Falls, Ontario, said operators of hotels, restaurants and attractions are grateful for every piece of tourism business they get.

"We've got red carpets waiting to be rolled out for all our guests," Diodati told TPG Saturday, sharing his hope that tourists will take advantage of the relaxed restrictions and visit the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, where he said 14 million people visited annually prior to the pandemic.

Diodati called the removed testing requirement for vaccinated visitors a "step in the right direction." He worries that the continued requirements for tourists to enter information into the ArriveCAN app may still be an obstacle for travel into the country.

"You might as well keep the borders closed, because they're not going to come," he said, predicting that return of travel to Canada will be extremely gradual because of the requirements still in place. The Canadian government's ArriveCAN site however says that entering the information in the app is a step that "only takes minutes to help keep each other safe."

Booking a trip to Canada

I spent a few minutes checking what the best weekend to travel to Canada over the next month or so would be as travelers face fewer obstacles.

For New Yorkers looking to take a short flight to Toronto, I found round trips to Toronto-Pearson International Airport (YYZ) from LaGuardia Airport (LGA) for $216 the weekend of April 30. Air Canada is a Star Alliance partner with United Airlines.

Those looking to travel from New York to Montreal may want to head to Quebec a weekend earlier. The cheapest options I found to Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) – both from LaGuardia – were the weekend of April 23, with round trips for $260 on both Air Canada and American Airlines.

For those on the West Coast looking to take advantage of the relaxed restrictions, the best weekend for a trip from Los Angeles (LAX) to Vancouver (YVR) was the weekend of April 16. A flight on Air Canada is priced at $236 round trip.

Where to stay

I checked on accommodations in some of Canada's most popular destinations over the next several weeks and I didn't find a lot of incredible redemption options, but I did find plenty of options where you're essentially getting the same value in points as you would in cash. You might as well book with points if you've got them!

In Toronto, you could get a decent redemption by staying at the Anndore House, which is a unique World of Hyatt property in the heart of downtown that was revamped in 2018 and is described as a "fusion of our quirky past and modern style." A two-night stay from April 30 to May 2 goes for a total of $534 or 24,000 points. Based on TPG's April 2022 Points & Miles Valuations , you do save a decent amount of value booking on points.

Another property I'll highlight is in Vancouver, which is a city that travelers in the northwest U.S. might be inclined to pack up and visit as it's a drive of fewer than three hours from Seattle.

Related: Planning a ski trip to Whistler on points and miles

Because of that, I looked at rates for a Sunday-Tuesday stay. The Holiday Inn & Suites Vancouver offers a nightly rate that costs to $180 or 29,000 points. Based on TPG's valuations , the points rate is worth about about $145 so it's a nice savings in value there.

I also found a chance to save on an otherwise more expensive property for travelers looking to make the trek across the northern border right away, and spend the night on the Canada side of Niagara Falls .

can american travel to canada without vaccine

The Marriott directly overlooking the falls is going for nightly rates in the high $100s up to rates in the $300s for much of April, May and June. Eager to visit Canada this weekend? You can book a room with a view of the falls for $116 on Sunday night.

Bottom line

There's no doubt this weekend marks a milestone when it comes to travel between the U.S. and Canada. While U.S. travelers still face testing requirements on the way home, this change essentially eliminates a good portion of the inconvenience when moving between countries, opening up more opportunities to easily explore all Canada has to offer.

And while some in Canada fear continued requirements to enter personal information into the ArriveCAN app could serve as a deterrent to travel, there's strong hope among the country's tourism industry that international visitors will return.

Canada Lifts Covid Vaccine Mandate For International Travelers

Canada will drop its Covid-19 vaccine requirement for visitors entering the country starting October 1, officials announced Monday, reopening the Canadian border to unvaccinated travelers for the first time since the worldwide coronavirus vaccination campaign began.

Canada will lift its Covid vaccine requirement for travel on October 1.

Canadian and foreign travelers will no longer need to submit proof of vaccination or pre-travel testing or go into quarantine or isolation upon entering the country starting Saturday.

In a statement on Monday, Canada’s Public Health Agency said the country is lifting the requirements due to its high vaccination rate along with low coronavirus hospitalization and death rates, increased availability of vaccine boosters and rapid tests, and the peak of the BA.4 and BA.5 coronavirus waves passing.

The move comes one week after Canadian members of Parliament and border-city mayors wrote a letter calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden to lift “unnecessary” travel restrictions that they argue have hurt border cities even as “both countries have largely returned to normal daily life.”

Canada now joins a list of 85 countries and territories without Covid-19 entry requirements, following similar moves by Japan last month, as well as Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Jamaica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Argentina and Chile.

Non-U.S. citizens traveling into the United States by air, sea or land still need to be fully vaccinated under U.S. policy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires full vaccination (not including a booster dose) for non-U.S. citizens before boarding a flight, with limited exceptions for children under 18, people traveling for foreign government work and people with certain medical conditions that prevent them from receiving a vaccine.

Key Background

Covid-19 cases in Canadian provinces are well below their January peak, and Covid-related hospitalizations are also on the decline, according to government data . Roughly 85.4% of Canadians have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 82% (31.39 million) have completed their primary dose series. Despite the high vaccination rate, Canadian officials had come under fire for strict vaccine mandates at the country’s border with the United States, most notably in January, when truck drivers unhappy with the vaccine rules protested across the country and formed a disruptive blockade in Ottawa. Trudeau invoked emergency measures to disband the blockade. Prior to Monday’s announcement, Canada had required full primary vaccination for non-Canadian citizens entering the country, with only a few exceptions for workers like fishermen, as well as people coming for medical treatment, people with medical conditions and people coming for funerals.

What To Watch For

Canada’s Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos thanked Canadians for high vaccination rates, but said “we expect Covid-19 and other respiratory viruses will continue to circulate over the cold months.” He urged people to get vaccine booster shots and “exercise individual public health measures.”

Who can travel from the U.S. to Canada?

How many border crossings are there between the u.s. and canada, checklist for a u.s.-canada border crossing, special cases for alaska residents, if you want to cross the u.s.-canada border ….

Borders between the U.S. and Canada recently reopened to travelers more than a year after having closed due to COVID-19. Now, many who are eager to explore our neighbor to the north are left wondering what’s involved in a border crossing and what guidelines they’ll need to adhere to for a successful journey.

If you’re anxious to visit Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary, here’s what to know to plan your U.S.-Canada border crossing, whether by land, air or sea.

Currently, Canadian borders are open to all U.S. citizens wishing to enter regardless of vaccination status. However, the requirements for entry will vary based on your vaccination status.

Fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative COVID test for entry, but must still use the ArriveCAN app to submit mandatory entry information, including proof of vaccination, at least 72 hours prior to arrival and/or before boarding a cruise ship destined for Canada.

Not fully vaccinated? You won’t be able to visit Canada if you’re traveling for discretionary or leisure purposes. If you don't qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler but still need to travel to Canada for reasons other than leisure, you’ll be required to quarantine for 14 days, take a molecular COVID test, and register for a COVID test upon your arrival in the country, which you can do in advance to save time.

» Learn more: What COVID test is required for travel?

There are more than 100 land border crossings between the U.S. and Canada, and wait time to cross can vary widely.

At most crossings, how long you wait depends on the time of day and the day of the week. Some crossings have little to no delay at off-peak travel times, and others, like Buffalo, New York, can log wait times around 40 minutes.

If you want to set appropriate expectations for how long it takes to cross the U.S.-Canada border, check the Government of Canada website , which is updated hourly.

» Learn more: Need a passport for a trip? Give yourself a big time cushion

If you're fully vaccinated and traveling to Canada, whether by car, plane or boat, you still have to follow certain protocols. To meet entry requirements, you must:

Have no symptoms of COVID-19.

Have received all doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 full days before you enter Canada.

Upload your proof of vaccination in ArriveCAN , an app that provides border crossing info and stores important documentation.

Have your required entry documents.

NOTE: As of April 1, 2022, fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative test for entry.

» Learn more: 4 differences between a passport book and card

If you don’t meet all the requirements of a fully vaccinated traveler, you’ll have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. You may also be selected for a random arrival test at some airports and land crossings. These may take place at the airport or a designated testing site, or you may be provided with a do-it-yourself kit that you can send in once you arrive at your final destination.

If you live in Alaska, you may sometimes have to drive through Canada to get to certain regions of the state. Unvaccinated Alaska residents who must pass through Canada for necessary purposes (i.e. not for leisure or recreation) may do so without pre-entry and arrival COVID tests, but they must remain in their vehicle while driving through Canada. They'll also likely be given a specimen collection kit when they cross a land border into Canada.

If you're leaving Alaska to travel to the lower forty-eight, or if you're returning to Alaska after being in another state, you may also be granted special permission to pass through Canada. However, if you’re not fully vaccinated you will need a negative COVID molecular test result to enter. You'll also need proof that you live in Alaska if you’re driving north, or proof of residence or employment in the lower forty-eight if driving south.

The key to a successful U.S.-Canadian border crossing is preparation. Make sure you know what documentation and information you need well in advance of your arrival at the border or the airport. Ensure everything is in order and uploaded to the ArriveCAN app, and be patient. Above all, travel safely.

Follow Canada's lead on vaccine rule, Maine businesses tell U.S.

American travellers can freely cross Canada's border without having to make sure they're carrying proof of vaccination — but Canadians entering the United States do not yet have the same experience.

Canada dropped all COVID-19 related travel restrictions — including proof of vaccination — on Oct. 1.

However, an Oct. 4 update published by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Canada was a reminder foreign travellers must still be fully vaccinated to fly, ferry or drive into the country.

According to a fact sheet from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, those without U.S. citizenship crossing a border will still be asked to verbally confirm they are fully vaccinated and may have to provide proof they received a jab approved by the Centers for Disease Control.

Some businesses near the border in Maine say they are hoping the U.S. government will follow Canada and remove all travel restrictions for those entering the country, particularly from nearby communities in New Brunswick.

"It would just be fair, right?" said Alf Anderson, executive director of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

"One side treating the other the same way. I think [that] would be terrific."

When reached for comment, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security directed CBC's questions about restrictions to the CDC, which did not respond prior to publication.

Any challenges have an impact: business group

As the difference in restrictions has only been in effect for a few days, Anderson said he doesn't have any evidence yet that it's making a significant difference.

"But just know that any challenges or hurdles to completing a trip, or booking a visit, have got to have some impact."

Sue Provencher, the manager at C&E Feeds in Calais, Maine, said she and other staff had been helping travellers crossing from the U.S. into Canada navigate the ArriveCAN app, which is no longer mandatory for travel.

She said she's pleased to with Canada's decision.

"I'm hoping that everything will go away on both sides. And we can return back to normal, because the small border towns depend on each other," Provencher said.

"It makes it much easier for older senior citizens to come back and forth, and come across. Business already started to pick up. And hopefully that will continue."

She added that businesses near the border may be losing out on business from unvaccinated Canadians.

"There's a lot of people that didn't get vaccinated … so I think it would still make a great impact to the economy if they got rid of [the vaccination requirement]."

Despite the differences in regulation, Anderson is optimistic.

"We love Canadian visitors, because there's such a long history of Canadian travellers coming to spend time in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park … hopefully this won't present such a challenge that they won't be able to come visit."

Canada Drops Vaccine Requirements, Visitors No Longer Need To Quarantine

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

After two years Canada is finally allowing Americans who are unvaccinated into the country without quarantining. And making it simpler for vaccinated travelers as well.

On September 30th Canada will lift its vaccine requirements for visitors. Also on September 30th, Canada will end random COVID arrival tests and make it optional for visitors to use the ArriveCan app. However, everyone will be required to continue to wear masks on planes to and from Canada as well as public transportation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been under pressure by voters and politicians to lift restrictions. The opposing party’s Pierre Poilivere has been campaigning for Canada to drop the ArriveCan app and lift all COVID restrictions.

Since March of 2020, the U.S.-Canada border has been shut down since the start of the pandemic. In August 2021 Canada reopened its border but Canada’s restrictions and enforcement had many differences from the United States’ policies.

The U.S. and Canada both require foreign visitors to be vaccinated to enter the country. However, Canada will allow unvaccinated travelers to enter the country under the requirement that the visitor must quarantine for 14 days. At the moment, foreign travelers that are vaccinated must upload their COVID-19 documentation through the ArriveCan app before entering Canada.

Canadian and U.S. officials have petitioned Trudeau and Biden to lift border restrictions and restore their policies to a pre-pandemic state.  Also, current restrictions are hurting the economies of those communities along the borders.

There is also push from business leaders and government officials in the United States to lift COVID-19 restrictions. As the restrictions are also affecting local economies and communities in the U.S. as well. Only time will tell if the U.S. will follow in Canada’s lead to restore policies to pre-pandemic times.

The countries you can travel to without a vaccine

By Abigail Malbon

The 28 most popular countries you can travel to without a vaccine

Travel around the world is easier now, particularly for those who are fully vaccinated with an approved Covid vaccine – but some countries are allowing unvaccinated travellers to enter. Yet with restrictions constantly changing, how do the latest rules affect those who aren't fully vaccinated, and which countries are allowing tourists to enter if they're unvaccinated?

Where can I travel unvaccinated?

There are currently a number of countries that will allow visitors who have not been vaccinated to enter. A few of them are in Europe , and the others are slightly farther afield. We recommend always closely following UK health guidance, including having your Covid vaccine and booster if you are able to. Before travelling, you should regularly check government guidelines both for the country you might be considering visiting and for the UK when you return.

You can find the full list of countries allowing people to enter without a vaccine below:

Travel vaccinations

Measles cases are increasing worldwide.

Before travelling, check that you and your family have received the recommended measles vaccinations.

Do not travel if you have symptoms of measles or have been in contact with someone with measles.

If you develop symptoms of measles after your return to Canada, call a health care provider right away.

Global Measles Notice

When travelling outside Canada, you may be at risk for a number of vaccine preventable illnesses.

You should consult a health care provider or visit a travel health clinic preferably six weeks before you travel. This is an opportunity to:

  • review your immunization history
  • make sure your provincial/territorial vaccination schedule is up-to-date
  • discuss any trip-related health concerns you may have
  • assess your needs based on where you plan to travel and what you plan to do

You may need additional vaccinations depending on your age, planned travel activities and local conditions. Preventing disease through vaccination is a lifelong process.

Use the reference below to determine which vaccinations may be recommended or required for your destination.

Vaccination recommendations by destination

Yellow fever vaccination.

Some countries require proof that you have received a yellow fever vaccination before allowing you to enter the country. Consult an embassy or consulate of your destination country in Canada for up-to-date information on its entry and exit requirements before you travel abroad.

Other countries may require you to have been vaccinated for yellow fever if you have passed through an area where yellow fever may occur .

Proof of vaccination must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis . You must carry the original certificate with you.

In Canada, the vaccination is only given at designated yellow fever vaccination centres .
