Celonis World Tour 2021 Recap: Takeaways for the Future of Processes & Data Execution

T he world’s top-performing best companies have one thing in common. They’ve found a way to go beyond data analytics - to data execution . In a world where the volume of data is exploding, exceeding 64 zettabytes , industry leaders need to make this data work for them.

Thousands of Celonis customers and partners from every industry and all around the world made this year’s World Tour our biggest virtual event ever. Celonis acquires lenses.io.

At World Tour, we announced the acquisition of Lenses.io to bring real-time data into business execution. Prior to Lenses.io, real-time streaming data was very difficult to apply in day-to-day business operations because of historically hard-to-use frameworks like Apache Kafka. Lenses.io is a pioneer in solving this problem by creating a system that allows any company to easily utilize streaming data, produced at scale, in milliseconds.

With the Lenses.io acquisition comes the launch of the new Celonis Kafka Connector .

Intelligence

Launch of the celonis execution graph.

Through the process insights and data assembled over the last decade, we have cracked the code on how to connect events, dependencies, and process relationships across multi-system environments. This breakthrough, called the Celonis Execution Graph, will give businesses, for the first time, insight into the true nature of their interconnected process ecosystem.

The Celonis Execution Graph is powered by two unique technology innovations: Celonis Multi Event Log and Celonis Signal Link.

Celonis announces partnership with ServiceNow

We were thrilled to announce that ServiceNow and Celonis have formed a strategic partnership to redefine how work flows. The partnership will combine ServiceNow’s leading low-code workflow platform with the real-time process execution capabilities of the Celonis Execution Management System (EMS).

And we’ve welcomed ServiceNow CEO Bill McDermott to the World Tour stage to discuss the exciting news.

Celonis announces partnership with Conexiom

To top things off, we announced our plan to partner with Conexiom, the global leader in sales order automation, and the launch of Touchless Order Capture, a new joint product offering in the Celonis EMS. With this product, Conexiom and Celonis are bringing together best-of-breed technologies to enable customers to optimize their order management processes.

Optimizing complex operations to enhance business performance

Key takeaways from the conference, the state of process mining on g2.

On June 28, I had the opportunity to attend a conference sponsored by Celonis , a leader in G2's Process Mining category.

This was a great opportunity to attend training sessions, learn more about process mining, and hear from users of process mining software .

The conference was dubbed Celonis World Tour 2023 , as they made 10 stops around the world, starting in Munich and wrapping up in Chicago.

What is process mining?

Process mining, also referred to as process automation or process intelligence, is a technique used in the field of data analytics and business process management to analyze and visualize the actual processes that occur within an organization. 

The process mining approach involves extracting and analyzing data from various sources, such as event logs, transactional data, or audit trails, that capture the activities and interactions between different components in a process.

The data is then used to create process models representing the actual flow of activities and events.

Once a process is visually mapped out, the platform finds inefficiencies, suggests alternatives, and can push new processes back into relevant systems. It can also outline costs and time saved based on different workflows and process improvements.

Process mining is especially beneficial for complex processes with a large volume of data, where it can be challenging to identify issues and inefficiencies manually. 

By leveraging the power of data analysis and visualization, process mining software provides organizations with valuable insights to optimize their operations, reduce costs, improve customer satisfaction, and enhance overall business performance.

Some categories I manage on G2 that leverage process mining include AP Automation , Accounts Receivable , Order Management , and Procurement .

Therefore, I wanted to better understand this process and how it affects my categories and the products within them.

I first attended the opening keynote by one of the Celonis co-founders, Alexander Rinke , who discussed what process mining is, how it works, and its various use cases. I heard from enterprise companies (FedEx, Nationwide, Merck ) that use process mining in their procure-to-pay processes, invoicing, collections, and various accounting functions. 

I also attended a session about taking advantage of process intelligence within finance departments to improve cash flow, reduce costs, and accelerate productivity. This helped me understand how process mining can be used in various platforms to improve workflows and processes.

I learned that the products in Procurement, and Accounting & Finance categories can use process automation in the following ways:

• AP automation: It can help centralize data across systems and streamline process execution to minimize late payments, take advantage of cash discounts, and increase the touchless invoice rate (invoices that are received, reviewed, approved, and paid automatically). 
• Accounts receivable: It can help improve cash flow, prioritize collections, and reduce the amount of past due invoices by monitoring risk, outstanding balances, and payment term compliance.
• Order management: It can help gain visibility across orders, prioritize the handling of orders, and increase the end-customer experience by automating order entry, measuring KPIs, and identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
• Procurement: It can be useful for maximizing purchasing power, minimizing risk, and cutting costs. This is achieved by ensuring vendor contracts are in compliance, maintaining accurate lead times for on-time delivery, consolidating purchases, and negotiating better terms with suppliers.

G2’s Process Mining category currently has 92 products, 18 of which are on the G2 Grid®. Over the last year, the category grew by 30%, adding 21 new products, while its review count increased by 41%, with 375 reviews.

This increased popularity and interest in process mining is no surprise, especially in the current challenging technology sector where companies are trying to optimize their operations and improve overall performance. 

G2's review data reveals the top factors that positively impact user satisfaction scores in the Process Mining category, as shown below.

The top three factors include:

• Execution management: This allows users to analyze processes, find bottlenecks, and identify the gaps between how things should be and how they are.
• Ease of use: This describes how easily users can use a software product.
• Process library: This provides users with a repository for process maps and documentation.

Choosing the right process mining software

Our review data further highlights that to be effective, process mining products must be easy to use, provide data-driven insights into current processes, and allow users to easily find and view process maps.

Virtual, mixed realities converge in new driving simulator

Portobello, a new driving simulator developed by researchers at Cornell Tech, blends virtual and mixed realities, enabling both drivers and passengers to see virtual objects overlaid in the real world.

This technology opens up new possibilities for researchers to conduct the same user studies both in the lab and on the road – a novel concept the team calls “platform portability.”

The research team, led by Wendy Ju , associate professor at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech, presented their paper, “ Portobello: Extended Driving Simulation from the Lab to the Road ,” at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) in May. The paper earned honorable mention at the conference.

Co-authors included doctoral students Fanjun Bu, Stacey Li, David Goedicke, and Mark Colley; and Gyanendra Sharma, an industrial adviser from Woven by Toyota.

Portobello is an on-road driving simulation system that enables both drivers and passengers to use mixed-reality (XR) headsets. The team’s motivation for developing Portobello stemmed from its work on XR-OOM , an XR driving simulator system. The tool could merge aspects of the physical and digital worlds, but it had limitations.

“While we could stage virtual objects in and around the car – such as in-car virtual displays and virtual dashboards – we had problems staging virtual events relative to objects in the real world, such as a virtual pedestrian crossing on a real crosswalk or having a virtual car stop at real stop signs,” Bu said.

This posed a significant obstacle to conducting meaningful studies, particularly for autonomous driving experiments that require precise staging of objects and events in fixed locations within the environment.

Portobello was conceived to overcome these limitations and anchor on-road driving simulations in the physical world. During the design phase, researchers utilize the Portobello system to generate a precise map of the study environment. Within this map, they can strategically position virtual objects based on real-world elements (placing virtual pedestrians near stop signs, for example). The vehicle operates within the same mapped environment, seamlessly blending simulation and reality.

With the successful integration of Portobello, the team has not only addressed the limitations of XR-OOM but has also introduced platform portability. This innovation enables researchers to conduct identical studies in both controlled laboratory settings and real-world driving scenarios, enhancing the precision and applicability of their findings.

“Participants treat in-lab simulators as visual approximations of real-world scenarios, almost a performative experience,” Bu said. “However, participants treat on-road simulators as functional approximations. [They] felt more stress in on-road simulators and felt their decisions carried more weight.”

Bu said Portobello could facilitate the “twinning of studies” – running the same study across different environments. This, he said, not only makes findings more realistic, but also helps uncover how other factors might affect the results.

Said Ju: “We believe that by going beyond running pristine studies and allowing some variability from real-world to bleed through, research results will be more applicable to real-world settings.”

Hiroshi Yasuda, a human-machine interaction researcher at Toyota Research Institute (TRI), also contributed to the research, which was supported by TRI and Woven by Toyota.
