Take the Whole Family

Travelling between the UK, Channel Islands and France is really easy with us, and we’re dedicated to ensuring you and your pet have a comfortable journey. On this page you’ll find everything you need to know about travelling with your pet.

For places to stay in the Channel Islands see our pet-friendly hotels in Jersey & Guernsey .

Can you take your dog or cat to Jersey & Guernsey?

Yes, you can take your pets onboard to the Channel Islands and France.

What is a pet?

Our definition of a pet is a domestic animal such as cat or a dog. We classify livestock animals as those commonly kept for production or leisure activities in a farming or stable environment, and these would need to be booked on as freight. If you're not sure how to book your pet or animal, call our Contact Center on 0345 609 1026, and they'll be happy to help.

Before you travel

All you have to do is let us know that you are planning to take a pet, when you make your booking. When booking online you'll be able to select from the following options – travelling on foot with a pet, travelling by car with a pet, or travelling to France with a pet.

If you are booking through an agent or tour operator, make sure they include the correct pet details in your booking.

Condor Islander can accommodate a maximum of 2 pets per cabin, where 1 animal will fit very comfortably. If passengers wish to travel with 2 dogs, they are advised that if both are large, the available cabin floor space is limited. When travelling on Condor Islander, p assengers need to bring the below with them for their pet/s.

  • Dogs own refreshment bowls

The journey

We don’t allow pets into the passenger lounges, except for recognised assistance dogs. If you’re travelling on foot your pet will need to be in a cage that meets RSPCA requirements for pet animals, which will be kept in a dedicated pet area on the car deck. The cage must be made of sturdy plastic or metal and not canvas or cardboard, which gives your pet plenty of space for food, water and familiar toys for the journey.

If you’re travelling by car with your pet they can stay in the car for the sea journey, but make sure you leave windows slightly open for fresh air, and also some water. We ask all travellers not to set their car alarms, so as not to upset any pets travelling.

If your dog isn’t in a cage or in the back of a vehicle using a dog safety guard, it’s worth considering removing any collar or harness before leaving the dog. This is because collars and harnesses can become caught on objects such as hand brakes, gear sticks and foot pedals, which could harm the dog. When you return to your car, control your dog using a slip lead to loop around its neck before opening the door wide.

It is recommended that you do not secure your dog by its collar or harness to a fixed point or seat belt in the car whilst unattended.

Visits to the car deck during the journey are normally permitted, but you’ll need to be accompanied by a member of the ship’s crew, and it is dependent on weather conditions. For more information please ask a member of staff onboard.

If travelling on Condor Islander, passengers staying in pet friendly cabins will be met by a cabin steward where they will be given their cabin key card and directions to their cabin.

Pets must be muzzled when going from the car deck to cabin and cabin to the outside deck. Pets are not permitted in the passenger lounges, lobbies and restaurants’ and must remain in pet friendly cabins unless on the outside deck for toileting or exercise.

Customers are reminded that the dog must wear a muzzle when outside a vehicle, cabin or kennel. Customers are asked to show the muzzle at check-in. If customers don’t have one, pet will need to remain in vehicle or Pet cage.

condor ferries pet travel

With more Brits than ever owning a dog (around a 44% increase in dog ownership since the pandemic started), consumers are now looking to travel further and more frequently with their beloved pooches.

Condor Ferries has seen a 19% rise in families travelling with their dogs over the past decade and has launched a new dog-friendly vessel to the Channel Island of Jersey, the Islander Ferry.

Beginning November, the Channel crossing ferry will welcome dogs in six of their cabins and also onto the deck to exercise.

Only four hours from the UK’s main southern ports, the beautiful island of Jersey is a fantastic choice for holidays for all the family, dogs included.

Throughout Jersey, dogs are allowed on beaches all year round , and there is a range of fantastic dog-friendly accommodations for all budgets.

Pet owners looking for a break with their four-legged friends this autumn/winter will shortly be able to take advantage of pet-friendly cabins aboard Condor Ferries’ new Islander ferry.

The new Islander ferry will offer six pet-friendly cabins to accommodate up to three people and one pet. An outside deck is also accessible for exercising.

Visitors from the British Isles do not require passports to visit Jersey, including dogs who do not require a pet passport.

The Islander is due to begin sailings from Poole and Portsmouth in November with both daytime and overnight crossings available. Prices for a return trip to St. Helier, Jersey start from £80 per person.

Where to stay: There are plenty of options in Jersey for dog-friendly accommodation, ranging from self-contained self-catering units to five-star luxury stays.

For pampered pooches, the five-star Longueville Manor Hotel provides dogs with their own water bowl, dog bed, cosy blankets and biscuit on arrival.

Alternatively, Les Ormes Holiday Resort offers self-catering villas, lodges and cottages as well as plenty of family-friendly activities onsite.

Up to two well-behaved dogs are accepted on a request basis per unit.

Top Recommended Dog Friendly Guernsey Accommodation

Life's a beach.

With miles of golden sands for frolicking on and clear waters for splashing in, Guernsey beaches are a dog’s dream. Our beaches are very dog friendly and to ensure everyone enjoys their time on the beach to the max there are certain rules to follow:

Take the lead

Between 1st October and 30th April, dogs can be exercised on the beach at any time and you do not need to use a lead. Between 1st May and 30th September, dogs must be kept on a lead between 10:30 and 18:00 on all beaches.

Dog owners should always prevent their dog from chasing or disturbing wildlife.

Taking care of beaches, parks and paths

If you are a dog owner, pick up after your dog! Please tie the top of the bag. Take the waste home, or put it in a public litter bin. Fines of up to £500 are in place.

Banned breeds

Please note the following dogs are banned in Guernsey: the Dogo Argentino, the Fila Braziliera, the Japanese Tosa (or Tosa) and the Pit Bull Terrier.

Condor Islander to have six 'pet friendly' cabins

condor ferries pet travel

CONDOR ferries has introduced its first pet friendly cabins on its new Islander ferry.

The initiative is due to a recent increase in ‘pet travel’, a spokesperson for the ferry operator said

Pets travelling on the Commodore Clipper service are required to stay in passenger’s vehicles for the duration of the crossings.

The ferry firm has said that the Condor Islander will have six pet friendly cabins ‘as we are seeing more pet travel into the Channel Islands in recent years’.

These cabins can accommodate up to three people and one pet. Each is en-suite, with bunk-style and an extra bed and differs from the usual passenger-only cabins in that they feature a laminate flooring.

The spokesperson continued: ‘An outside deck is accessible for exercise and pets are to be muzzled and kept on a lead when not in the cabin.

‘Pets can still be carried on Islander and our other passenger vessels in a vehicle or in an appropriate carrier on the car deck.

‘We were able to install these cabins as part of the overall refurbishment of the vessel which also sees a restaurant, brasserie and duty free shop.

We expect the new cabins to be popular with Channel Islands’ residents.’

Islander is expected to enter service in November, with both day and overnight crossings from the Channel Islands and the UK.
