Category : 1993 Devotional Tour

The 1993 Devotional Tour was a multi-leg tour undertaken by Depeche Mode in support of their eighth studio album Songs Of Faith And Devotion . It began its European leg on 19 May 1993 in Lille that concluded with the Crystal Palace concert on 31 July. Following a month-long break and a 6 September rehearsal, the tour kicked off its North American leg in Quebec City and toured across Canada, the United States, and Mexico before returning to the United Kingdom for an additional string of shows in December.

After a two month break, the tour was extended with a named second leg through which the group (minus Andrew Fletcher , who took a leave of absence and was replaced by tour manager and longtime band associate Daryl Bamonte for thirty-nine of its sixty shows) played to countries and territories they had never previously visited, including South Africa, Australia, East Asia, and South America as well as additional shows in the United States and Canada.

The Devotional Tour is frequently sensationalised in its media coverage due to its grueling length, excess, and the role internal issues played in the decision of Alan Wilder to leave Depeche Mode in 1995.

Line up and songwriting credits

  • Dave Gahan - lead vocals
  • Martin L. Gore - keyboards, guitar, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals (denoted by (*) in track listings)
  • Andrew Fletcher - keyboards
  • Alan Wilder - keyboards, drums, backing vocals
  • Hildia Campbell - backing vocals
  • Samantha Smith - backing vocals

All songs performed were written by Martin L. Gore.

Wilder recalled the dynamic system used by the group to determine setlists on the fly in a Q&A on the official Recoil site:

When I was in the group, it was standard practice to change the set if we were playing one venue over 2 or more nights or if we were revisiting an area already played on the tour. We had 8 separate tapes - basically 4 different set-lists (red, green, blue and yellow I think) which were each split into two halves and broken up by an acoustic song somewhere in the middle - which allowed for the tape change. Effectively therefore, we could mix and match any combination of 1st and 2nd half tapes. Along with a few different alternatives for Martin's acoustic songs, this gave us the opportunity to perform many different running orders although all of them had the same overall shape and structure. So, for example, a quick chat beforehand might result in 'let's play the blue / red set tonight with 'Somebody' instead of 'I Want You Now' in the middle.' We could also change tapes for the encores, if necessary.

  • The two back-to-back nights at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, Mexico are unique in that they are the only two concerts on the Devotional tour to not feature a support act.
  • Later tours would also employ live female backing vocalists whilst expanding their performative responsibilities. These included the 1998 The Singles Tour , which featured Janet Cooke and Jordan Bailey performing synchronised dances in addition to singing back-up. Bailey would reprise her "lead" backing vocalist role for the Exciter Tour in 2001, where she was joined by Georgia Lewis.
  • Wilder would state that his endurance as a drummer improved over the course of the tour. As a result, and to maintain consistency with the "rockier" nature of the Exotic Tour set, several songs which had previously relegated percussion parts to tape on the "Devotional" leg of the tour were adjusted to allow Wilder an expanded role behind the drum kit. These songs included ' Policy Of Truth ', ' Halo ', and ' Stripped '.

Black Keys explain why they decided to cancel their upcoming tour dates: Read the band's statement

A fter news surfaced last week that the Black Keys had canceled their upcoming North American tour -- including a stop in Cleveland at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse -- questions remained about why the concerts were scrapped.

In an update Sunday afternoon, the band shared the following statement about the International Players Tour to explain what's going on:

The band wants to assure everyone that Dan & Patrick are alive and well.

Following the recent run of shows in the UK & Europe, including stops at iconic venues like Brixton Academy and the Zenith in Paris, we have decided to make some changes to the North American leg of the International Players Tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band, and will be announcing a revised set of dates shortly.

Everyone who had purchased tickets and/or VIP to the initial tour dates will be fully refunded – and when the new plans are announced, will be the first to be able to buy tickets.

Thank you for your understanding and apologies for the surprise change… We’re pretty sure everyone is going to be excited when you see what we have in mind though, and look forward to seeing everyone soon.

The Black Keys were initially scheduled to perform in Cleveland on Oct. 12.

First formed in Akron in 2001, The Black Keys consists of Firestone High School alums Dan Auerbach (singer/guitarist) and Patrick Carney (drummer).

PGA Tour winner dead at 30 as golf world rocked

A star golfer has died at the age of 30 in the middle of a tournament, with his parents revealing his heartbreaking cause of death.

‘Damn it Grayson’: Golf world in mourning

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray has died at the age of 30, golf officials announced on Sunday morning.

The star’s parents revealed a few hours later that he died by suicide.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement.

“It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.”

The couple said they have “so many questions that have no answers”.

“But one.“Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and will be missed,” the statement continued.

“We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of gold for the outpouring of support.

“Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.

“Please respect out privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else.”

Murray previously talked openly about battling depression and alcoholism, and he had recently been in the midst of a career resurgence, The NY Post reports.

After winning the Sony Open in January, Murray said that he had been sober for eight months.

Murray withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge on Saturday during the second round due to illness.

“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

“I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same.

“We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones. I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so.

“As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes. The PGA Tour has grief counsellors available at both tournament sites, as well as virtually for those not in the field. I am en route to Fort Worth and will share more information when we can.”

Murray won the Sony Open this past January as well as Barbasol Championship in 2017.

After the Sony Open win in Hawaii, an emotional Murray discussed the hard fight he had with mental issues and finding happiness and admitted he had considered suicide.“It’s not easy,” he said. “I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times.”

Murray also praised his fiancée, Christiana Ritchie and Jesus, for giving him love and support during the hard times.

“When you get tired of fighting, let someone else fight for you. … I hope everyone at home watching can get a little inspiration from it. If I can just help one person, that’s all it takes … I knew today was not going to change my life, but it did change my career, and I’m excited.”

He had also been open earlier about battling depression and alcohol issues throughout his career, and said in 2023 that he had gotten sober.

“I just thought I was a failure,” he said. “I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent.”

After playing collegiately at Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State, Murray turned pro in 2015.

Including his two PGA Tour wins, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes.

CBS announcer Jim Nantz became emotional while announcing the news during the third round of the Charles Schwab Challenge on Saturday.

“I just want to say that the Tour did offer to the [Murray] family to stop play, right here basically at the top of the hour,” Nantz said on the broadcast. “The family was adamant that Grayson and the family wants the tournament to go on. Grayson Murray, gone way too soon, at the age of 30.

“It’s a sad day on the PGA tour. And somehow, with heavy hearts, we’re gonna cover a golf tournament after a break. We’re gonna cover it, we’re gonna try as best we can, be as respectful as we can in our tone and in our hearts.”

Details are emerging of the beautiful relationship Grayson Murray had with his fiancee as the golf world continues to mourn his tragic death.

A six-hour road trip was worth it for a rising Aussie star who earned her major championship debut at this week’s US Open with record prize money on offer.

The golfing world is in shock and struggling to comprehend the sudden death of two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray.

Franz
