15 Best Things to Do in Downtown Houston

Downtown Houston is an eclectic mix of commercial properties, high rise offices, and green spaces. Covering just under two square miles in the very heart of the city, it’s where skyscrapers rise above the spread of Houston itself like a cluster of massive stalagmites.

Houston was founded on the banks of Buffalo Bayou which cuts through the upper part of the downtown district. But don’t worry, there’s much more to do in Downtown Houston than fishing for catfish. Explore the streets of Downtown by double-decker bus or view DT’s numerous graffiti artworks on a Segway. Drop into a church for a beer or fill up on Tex-Mex while watching a basketball game.

Not everything Downtown Houston has to offer is on the surface; there’s almost as much going on underground as there is above it. So check out these fifteen best things to do in Downtown Houston to find out what is happening and where.

1. Double Decker Bus Tour

Double Decker Bus, Houston, Texas

Climb up the stairs to the top deck of an open-topped double-decker London bus and ride around Downtown plus the rest of Houston to see all the major sights.

The hop-on-hop-off service has three pick up points in Downtown Houston. One at Market Square Park, another at Houston City Hall Visitor Center and one on Bagby Street in DT’s Theater district.

The big red bus’s full loop tour takes around ninety minutes. Do it all in one go or get off then get back on when it comes back around an hour and a half later. Ding ding! All aboard!

2. Downtown Houston Tunnel System

Downtown Houston Tunnel System

Once you’ve seen DT Houston at street level, head down into the Downtown Houston Tunnel System and explore what lies twenty feet beneath. It’s a surreal subterranean world which interlinks over ninety blocks.

Wander through the six-mile-long labyrinth of brightly illuminated walkways full of retail outlets and food courts with cafes and restaurants.

The tunnels are easily accessed via escalators and signposted stairs at pavement level. Download a tunnel map before you go as finding your way around can be confusing.

3. Heritage Society Museum

Heritage Society Museum, Houston

The Heritage Society Museum is in the Sam Houston Park off Lamar Street in Downtown Houston. More of a village within the city than a museum, here the exhibits are a collection of historic buildings which stand within ten acres of landscaped grounds.

Dwarfed by the skyscrapers surrounding them, the restored premises include the oldest building still standing in the city, one of the first with an interior kitchen and a timber church built in the late 1800’s. All contain antique furnishings and artifacts from bygone days showing how Houston’s first residents lived.

Strolling around the Heritage Society Museum and the gardened grounds is like being caught in a genuine Downtown Houston time capsule.

4. The Church of Beer

St Arnold Brewery Company

The St Arnold brewery company, named after a European saint, is the oldest craft beer brewery in the state of Texas and where better to sample their products than in Downtown Houston in an unusual and church-ified atmosphere.

Take a tour of the brewery premises then enter through the huge double doors of the restaurant pavilion. The interior is decked with wooden arches across the high ceiling, stained glass windows, and antique religious art. While it might not be a real church, it’s a place for real beer worshippers.

Sit in one of the alcove chapels decorated with vibrant murals by local artists and sip a one-time brew from the divine series or a more down to earth, year-round produced draft. They serve great food too, and there are fantastic views of DT Houston from the beer garden.

5. Discovery Green

Discovery Green, Houston

Discovery Green, a twelve-acre public park in Downtown Houston is as much a social hub as it is a park. The park has a one-acre lake, fountain and two promenades, one lined with oak trees and the other offering three-hundred and sixty-degree views of DT Houston.

The park holds weekly festivals and events ranging from dance to film presentations to dramatic works in the amphitheater. Enjoy the park ambiance by night and dine at either of the park’s two classy restaurants The Grove or the Lake House. If you are there over a weekend, The Lake House also serves a scrumptious Sunday brunch.

6. Hobby Center For Performing Arts

Hobby Center For Performing Arts, Houston

The Hobby Center For Performing Arts is an ultra-modern, theater on Bagby Street in Downtown Houston.

Split into two separate auditoriums, the Sarofim Hall and the Zilkha Hall; the theater has a total seating capacity for over three thousand. The Hobby Center’s major showpieces are the sixty-foot glass windows, with incredible DT Houston views, in the three-story high foyer area.

The theater hosts dramatic performances, diverse musical concerts, and Broadway spectaculars. There is an in-house restaurant, the Diana American Grill, named after the theater’s patron and serving traditional grill room food, plus a bistro in the lobby for drinks before the show begins.

7. Houston Police Museum

Houston Police Museum

The Houston Police Museum on Downtown’s Travis Street is in the lobby of the Houston Police headquarters.

The Houston Police memorabilia, collected over several decades, includes a helicopter suspended from the ceiling, a vintage auto shot through with bullet holes and antique highway patrol motorcycles. There is also a memorial wall dedicated to Houston’s fallen officers.

Make sure you’re carrying ID with you when you go, you’ll need it to get in.

8. Bayou Place

Bayou Place, Houston

Fulfill all your dining and entertainment needs under one roof at the Bayou Place complex in the Theater district of Downtown Houston.

Take in a movie with dinner at the AMC Dine-In, a classic burger at the Hard Rock Cafe or sushi at the Blue Fish. Follow with a concert or show at the Revention Center or the Ballroom, then relax on the outdoor patio of the Wine Cellar under the nighttime lights of Downtown Houston.

Bayou Place is one of Downtown’s liveliest social hubs and perfect for a weekend night out.

9. Houston Graffiti & Street Art By Segway

Houston Graffiti

Ride a Segway around the streets of Downtown Houston and discover over two hundred individual murals created by the best aerosol artists in Texas.

Start out in Graffiti Park on Leeland Street, a parking lot surrounded by buildings daubed with gigantic, colorful artworks. There you’ll master maneuvering the Segway, before taking to the cycle lanes and traffic free alleyways of DT to discover just how active DT Houston’s street art scene is.

You’ll soon see, graffiti is everywhere in Downtown Houston.

Suggested tour : Mural Tour by Electric Cart

10. Toyota Center

Toyota Center, Houston

The Toyota Center is an indoor sport and event venue in Downtown Houston and the home base of the Houston Rockets basketball team who draw crowds large enough to fill the twenty thousand seat arena to capacity.

The center often hosts big-name music concerts by groups like the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, and Justin Beiber. There are various dining options at the arena which include a chef’s buffet in the Red and White Bistro, pizzas at any of the ten Pizza Huts, burgers from over twenty-five stands and countless other food and drink concessions.

Wherever you’re seated, you won’t go hungry at a Rockets basketball game in Downtown Houston.

11. Houston Escape Rooms

Houston Escape Rooms

Put your nerves to the test in an adrenaline-charged, one hour challenge at the Houston Escape Rooms on Jackson Street in Downtown Houston.

Get locked in, then attempt to solve the mystery of grandma’s hidden treasure, agent Mo’s abduction or sink enemy ships in a naval mission before the time runs out or suffer the consequences.

The suite of escape rooms will make you think, puzzle and ultimately panic as the clock ticks away. Have fun!

12. Pappasito’s Cantina

Pappasito's Cantina

Downtown Houston’s favorite fayre is Tex-Mex, and there’s no better place to get a genuine plateful than at Pappasito’s Cantina on Lamar Street.

Enter the restaurant under the Las Vegas-worthy Pappasito neon sign and walk into the more homely atmosphere of a Mexican cantina. Choose a pre-dinner Margarita from their ten variations of the cocktail, then tuck into some quesadillas, guacamole or shrimp ceviche followed by tasty tacos or Pappasito’s house specialty, fajitas.

Eating authentic Tex-Mex is one of the best reasons for visiting Downtown Houston, so don’t skip it.

13. Rec Room

Rec Room Bar

The Rec Room is a small, intimate theater on Jackson Street in Downtown Houston which presents experimental dramatic and musical works.

The performances are presented to audiences of just thirty people. Entrance and seating are allocated on a first come first served basis so get there early. Spontaneous acts take place in the Rec Room bar too which could be anything from a stand-up comedian to a mini bar concert.

The Rec Room is diverse and definitely entertaining.

14. The Dirt Bar

The Dirt Bar, Houston

Downtown Houston likes to rock the night, and they do it at the Dirt Bar on Caroline Street. While low lighting adds to the dive bar atmosphere, don’t be fooled, this is a place frequented by Houston’s music celebs.

Heavy rock songs pound out of the internet-connected jukebox, gothic chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and the bar is stocked to the top with a huge variety of bottles. There are cocktails like Black Mule on the drinks menu, though don’t expect it to be served in a glass – they come in mini metal buckets.

If tattoos, piercings and heavy metal aren’t your thing – choose a different bar.

15. Downtown Historical Bike Tour

Houston Bike Tour

Head just outside of Downtown to join the cycle tour on Buffalo Bayou’s Sabine Street. Get equipped with two wheels, and a helmet then pedal back to Downtown with your guide.

Get the low-down on DT Houston history as you peddle past all the major sights, take a turn by the bayou and the city’s founding point, Allan’s Landing, before heading back to Buffalo Bayou for an unhurried tour of the park.

The cycle tours last between two to three hours depending on your cycling skills and how many times you stop for a rest to enjoy the beautiful views of Bayou City.

Review for Best of Houston Driving Tour Pierre Canada Trip Advisor

"I took the day off to take my family on this unique Houstonian experience and it did not disappoint! Our tour guide had such interesting information and stories about the tunnels and the city. There is no way we could have gone by ourselves and seen everything we did without getting lost. My family had never done a tour like this and cannot wait to visit again. Photos and recommendations were a great bonus!"

Review for Tunnel Tour Eric The Woodlands,TX Trip Advisor

"I was not expecting much of a history lesson about Houston, but was pleasantly surprised by how knowledgeable our guide, Vanessa, was about downtown. The food stops were excellent and it was so great to get to meet one of the owners, and a couple of the chefs. Such a wonderful experience from start to stop."

Review for Food Tour Kevin College Station/Bryan Viator

"My family lives in the Houston suburbs and were hosting an out-of-town visitor. So we decided to book a city tour - figured we could always learn something new about the city. So glad we did. Our experience with Astroville Tours was a great mix of logistical smoothness, impressive knowledge and education, interesting sights, and disarming friendliness and helpfulness. Plus the van we went around in was so comfortable and clean. Am going to check out their other tours!"

Review for Private Best of Houston Tour Nina Trip Advisor

"Vanessa , guía excelente , amable y con vasto conocimiento de Houston. A pesar de que éramos solo 2 personas, ella nos dio el tour, lo cual agradecemos mucho dado que no hay muchas opciones para el turismo en Houston. Al final nos sugirió algunos restaurantes y nos guió para el uso del METRORail y así llegar al sector de los museos."

Houston Tunnels Tours

We offer 3 different downtown tunnel tours by themes and geographic area in downtown.  Each spends time pointing out the architectural features, architects, history, usage of buildings, and history of Houston.  Each of these tours has 6 options in terms of the length of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.5 hours.

For exclusive or nearly exclusive downtown walking tours that are conducted only from October through April, please read about the four (4) options that are identified on the Downtown Walking Tour page.

All of the tours cost the same amount, based on the number of people and the number of hours.  The ideal number of people on a tour is less than 10.

Each tour has a different area, theme, and length of walking.  The following information may be useful in choosing your tour.  The time frames below are based on having less than 10 people with the exception of A6, B6, and C6.  The most popular tour lengths are the tours of 2.5 hours, 3.0, and 3.5 hours.  These are the A3, A4, and A5 Tours, B3, B4, and B5 Tours, and C3, C4, and C5 Tours.

We always have a stop for lunch on 3.5 and 4.5 hour tours.  If you would like to have a lunch stop on a shorter tour, just tell us and we will customize the tour for you by deleting some of the tunnels and or buildings that we would we would normally enter to create sufficient time for lunch.  Lunch in a food court is normally about 40 minutes.

Beginning and Ending Location:

All of the downtown daytime walking tours begin and end in the rotunda of City Hall, located at 901 Bagby Street, Houston Texas 77002.  If an event is taking place, the tour will begin either outside of City Hall on the east side of the building where the reflecting pool is located or outside the Jesse H. Jones Central Library at 500 McKinney Street, Houston, Texas 77002, across the street from City Hall.

It has been our experience that about 25% of the people who contact us do not know what the word rotunda means.  As used here and by City Hall, it is the large more-or-less square, not round, central area that can be used for receptions.  It does not have a dome over it.  It is enclosed with controlled ventilation.

Entering City hall:

One can enter City Hall from:

  • The west side Bagby Street entrance and go through a security check.
  • The east side by the reflecting pool and avoid security.
  • From a basement tunnel from a parking lot and go through security, possibly twice.

City Hall was built in 1937 and 1938, and opened in 1939.  It is 17-floors tall.  The architect was one of the two most notable architects in Houston from the 1920s to the 1950s, the Jewish Austrian Joseph Finger (1887 – 1953).

Tunnel Tours A3, A4, and A5 are most popular with 4th and 7th grade Texas history classes, individuals who like history and architecture, and people over the age of 40 who may want a shorter walk.

Tunnel Tours B3, B4, and B5 are most popular with people under the age of 40, women, shoppers, and out-of-town tourists.

Tunnel Tours C3, C4,  and C5 are most popular with those who have or are staying in any of the 3 hotels in which we enter, those people who have business connections with any of the companies in the buildings that we enter, and or those who are in excellent physical shape and want a more extensive walking tour.

The following pictures were provided by Jennifer Zhang.

These tunnels began in the 1930s to connect private buildings with employee parking garages.  Initially, Ross Sterling connected two buildings that he owned.  Movie theater operator Will Horwitz connected 3 of his theaters through the tunnel system.  More tunnels were added for receiving and shipping goods, and moving freight and garbage.  In 1961, Bank of the Southwest was linked to the 1010 garage and the Mellie Esperson Building.  This was the beginning of opening the tunnels to the general public.  The city of Houston became involved in the late 1970s and 1980s when it excavated under streets and sidewalks to create linkages amongst the tunnels.  As new structures are erected, owners may decide to be connected to the tunnels.  As old structures are closed or torn down, tunnel passages may be closed temporarily or permanently.

Since the 1990s, companies are more likely to choose to be connected to the system through skywalks or skybridges.  These are cheaper, faster, and safer to construct and install, and easier to maintain.

Visual and Auditory (Sites and Sounds) Imagery:

These are probably the most clean and pristine tunnels open to the public in the United States.  They have waxed floors.  Some areas have marble walls and staircases.  Over 500 businesses and 10 food courts can be found in the tunnels while thousands of people work in subterranean Houston.  One cannot help but to be impressed and wonder why other cities have not achieved what Houston has.

What, When, Where, and Why:

Houston has the largest collection of pedestrian tunnels in the world without a subway system. We have approximately 7.5 miles/12.1 kilometers of walking tunnels. Currently, some 95 blocks are connected.

We conduct tunnel tours on Mondays through Fridays throughout the year.  The tunnels are open from approximately 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.   None of these tunnels are open on weekends or major holidays .  Our tours normally begin at 10:00 AM.  However, we can be flexible.  If you want a full 2.5 hour tunnel tour, the latest we can schedule a tour for you will be at 3:30 PM.

If you would like to go on an enclosed walking tour on the weekends or later in the day, please see our Texas Medical Center (TMC) Walking Tours .   We offer a variety of 3 different sets.

The tunnels are located exclusively in downtown, but are not inclusive of all of downtown.  They primarily cover the west and central part of downtown.  Over 80 entrances exist to enter into the tunnels, yet most are not identified from the outside.  They are between 1.5 and 3 stories below the ground.

The weather, health, and efficiency.

  • Escape the oppressive heat and humidity and inclement weather such as tropical storms and hurricanes.
  • Avoid the carbon monoxide of the vehicles and other pollutants on the street.
  • We start the tours with an introduction of between 20 to 30 minutes depending on the number of people and questions asked.  We will provide you with a history of the current and past city halls, identify what you can expect to see, what to look for in identifying the age of buildings and building renovations, and the issue of bathrooms.
  • We will show you a good site for photo opportunities for images of skyscrapers and or group photos.
  • We can provide you with underground tunnel maps.
  • You will receive narratives about the history of these buildings, businesses, people, art, and sites.
  • Cellular telephone reception is spotty.  Do not rely on a cellular telephone operating in the tunnels.

Miscellaneous Other Tunnels:

Other unconnected downtown tunnels exist.  These are generally not open to the public.  These include the former Exxon Mobil/Humble building to its garage, the Courthouse District tunnels, and 1300 Main to the Travis Garage.

Your Personal Achievements:

You will experience and know more of the tunnels than probably over 90% of all Houstonians.  Many Houstonians have heard about the tunnels, but have not been in them.  Basically two groups of people use the tunnels:

  • Employees who work downtown, and
  • People who come for the high culture at night.

Employees and patrons of the arts do not have the time or opportunity to see as much of the tunnels as you will experience!

You will achieve some good low impact exercise by walking at a steady pace.  As a general rule, when walking on a flat surface without obstructions and stops, a person walks at about 2 miles/3.2 kilometers per hour.

Myths to be Broken :

Have you ever heard people state that Houston homes cannot have basements because we are too close to water?  Think again about this bizarre claim when you are walking for miles far lower than any basement in a residential house.  Think again when you realize that we have 12 buildings with 50 or more floors and 27 buildings with 40 or more floors; each one of these with a foundation that goes several feet and floors into the ground as a foundation.  Think again when you see 3 levels of underground parking for tens of thousands of vehicles.

These are not dungeons or catacombs with leaking water pipes, sparks flying from exposed wires, the underground ruins of some earlier civilization, old boardwalks and dirt roads, and rodents scurrying through stone and cement openings.  These are well-maintained, attractive, and efficient corridors and centers for and to businesses.

Starting Time:

Tours normally start at 10:00 AM, but because these are relatively short tours, we can be flexible.  Let us know if you want to start at a different time.  We can start earlier, but consider driving through rush-hour traffic to go to downtown.  Because most people want a tour that is usually a minimum of 2.5 hours, the latest that you might want to start and to be able to see everything is 3:30 PM as the tunnels are normally closed by 6:00 PM.  We can start after 3:30 PM, but the tour will be abridged.  Consider driving through rush hour traffic in the evening.

Walking in the Tunnels:

The walking is leisurely and at a steady pace with usually a stop to point out sites within every 5 minutes. The stops are for a couple of minutes and not to sit down.

Groups of 10 or more people should stay to the right and walk in columns of two inside the tunnels. This will allow for the free movement of other walkers in each direction.

We covered topics of architecture (styles, materials, designs, and periods) and architects, history, art, race, ethnicity, bigotry, businesses, usage, housing patterns, science with heat, cold, and ventilation, illumination, ventilation, population, mass transit, and people.

Metered street parking is available on Walker Street on the north side of City Hall and McKinney Street on the south side of City Hall.  Underground parking is beneath Tranquility Park via Rusk Street between Bagby Street and Smith Street on the north side of City Hall.  Use a fictitious address of 510 Rusk Street in a GPS to find the entrance.  A parking garage behind the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts (HCFPA) that is diagonally located at 800 Bagby Street is another option.  The closest parking entrance is on Walker Street between Bagby Street and I-45.  Use a fictitious address of roughly 620 Walker Street in a GPS to find this entrance.  If you rely on a smart phone GPS, and not a dedicated GPS, the GPS will malfunction the majority of the time.  Be prudent, look up the address on an online map site, and print out the directions before going downtown.

Bathrooms in the tunnels are generally NOT open to the public.  Use a bathroom before beginning the tour.  We may walk 1.0 to 1.5 hours before a bathroom will be available.  Public bathrooms are available in City Hall’s basement and in the libraries on McKinney Street, across from City Hall.

Wear comfortable shoes.  Bring a sweater if you become cold easily.  Some tunnels have excellent ventilation.

Photography:

Take photos anywhere you like except in banks.

Decorum/Behavior:

Proper decorum is expected in professional buildings.  Large groups should walk in pairs or columns of two and stay to the right so other people can pass from behind and from the opposite direction.  Private conversations should remain private.  If other people can hear you, you are too loud.  If people are going to talk amongst themselves, they should do so quietly, so as to not disrupt others, and to allow for other members to hear the tour guide.

Notes for School and Camp Groups:

For school and camp groups, the ratio of chaperones to students/campers should be at least 1:10.  Ideally, the ratio should be 1:5.  At least one week in advance, the school or camp should provide Houston Historical Tours in writing, via email or fax, a list of all of the chaperones and the cellular telephone numbers where they can be reached on the day of the tour.  We conduct tours for schools and camps only when they provide sufficient and trained supervision for the safety of the children with minimal disruptions in the buildings and public areas that we occupy.  IF A SCHOOL OR CAMP GROUP DOES NOT PROVIDE CHAPERONE NAMES AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS AND OR SUFFICIENT CHAPERONES, DO NOT EXPECT THE TOUR TO BE CONDUCTED.  EXPECT TO FORFEIT THE DEPOSIT.  THE SAFETY OF STUDENTS AND THE STUDENTS’ APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR IS PARAMOUNT TO US.

Chaperones and Teachers:

Chaperones and teachers are supposed to supervise, guide, and discipline students and campers.  They should be trained and knowledgeable of their responsibilities.  They should be role models.  They are to be spread out amongst the children.  With the exception of the caboose, their cellular telephones should be turned off.  One chaperone or teacher should be in every elevator with students.  At least one chaperone/teacher should be a male and one a female so that each one can check the bathrooms and or serve as monitors when used by youngsters.  IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TOUR GUIDE AND INAPPROPRIATE TO ASK OR EXPECT THE TOUR GUIDE TO GO INTO BATHROOMS TO CHECK ON STUDENTS/CAMPERS.   The adults should know the names and have a list of the specific students for whom they are responsible.

When walking in the tunnels, teachers/chaperones should spread out on the left side of every 5 to 10 children to ensure that they are walking in columns on the right side of the halls and that their behavior is appropriate.

Cost for Chaperones and Teachers:

As a courtesy from Houston Historical Tours, chaperones and teachers are FREE up to a ratio of 1:5 .  They do not have to pay.  As such, they also do not count toward the total number of students in a school group.  For example, if a school has 18 students + 3 chaperones = 21, the school is paying at the appropriate rate for 18 people.

Group Sizes and Challenges:

Walking tours only move as fast as the slowest person.  The larger the group – the slower the tour.   You may wish to extend the tour by 1 hour.  More time is needed to wait for people to use bathrooms, ask questions, and for the slowpokes to catch up.  Please be understanding.  The maximum number of people on a walking tour should be 49.  The tunnels and an observation deck can only accommodate so many people at a time.  Talking to a large group outside will result in problems for people who cannot hear what is being said with other distractions.

We may cover a shorter distance and have to delete going through some tunnels and entering some buildings whose elevators and corridors do not easily accommodate large numbers for groups of 10 or more people or with slow walkers.  You may wish to extend the tour by an additional hour to accommodate the size of the group.

For groups of 10 or more people, have one person, preferably tall, responsible, and possibly with a cellular telephone, to serve as the sweep or caboose at the end of the pack.  The leader will look for this person to always be the last person and ensure that no one is left behind.

Escalators and Elevators:

The Booze, Bites and Historical Sites tour was one of my favorite things we did in Houston on our vacation! Star was an incredible guide and gave us such a unique history of downtown Houston. The food and craft cocktails we tried were all delicious and the restaurants we stopped at were all very hospitable. This tour is an absolutely must for visitors and locals alike, HIGHLY recommend!

Had the pleasure of going on this tour with Star. She provided so much knowledge about downtown and delivered it in a way that keeps you captivated and intrigued. I left the tour nice and full and feeling good from the cocktails. Overall, 100% recommend. Don't miss out on this one.

Our team had a great experience on our food tour - what a fun team activity versus just sitting in a restaurant. Food was interesting and very good. Star was very personable, had a great loud voice that was perfect for a tour guide. Learned some new things about the city and specifics about the restaurants and chefs as well! Thanks again!

This is a great tour! Star does wonderful job showing her guests around the city through food. We explored the historic district of downtown Houston and made 4 stops for food and drink pairings. It was a great day being a tourist in our own city and exploring places close by that we didn't know existed!

This tour was incredible. Just enough bites and booze and you learn something along the way! Star, our guide, was fantastic. You can feel the passion she has for the city and its history, and she goes out of her way to make sure everyone is having a great time. Not enough can be said about the amazing tour!

Start Me Up: the Stones Kick off North America Tour in Houston

HOUSTON (Reuters) -The Rolling Stones kicked off their North America tour at a sold-out venue in Houston on Sunday, with people traveling from various cities to watch one of the world's most enduring rock bands amid worries that this could be their last tour.

The show was the first of 16 performances, set across the U.S. and Canada through July.

Fans flocked to the NRG Stadium in Houston in Rolling Stones T-shirts showcasing the band's iconic lips and tongue logo.

The band, formed more than six decades ago, opened with "Start Me Up" with Mick Jagger walking onto the stage in a shiny striped jacket, a gray sequined shirt and black jeans. People immediately started to dance along to the 1981 classic.

Jagger, who is 80, danced, skipped and ran across the stage while showcasing his vocal range.

"Hello Houston, it's good to be back in the lone star state," Jagger said, adding that band visited NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston and making quips about Texas-based convenience store chain Buc-ee's.

He performed alongside Keith Richards, 80, and Ronnie Wood, 76, the surviving core of the band.

"Every time I see them, it's such a joy. They're amazing. They take such true joy in playing," said Greta Brasgalla, 56, who traveled from El Paso, Texas, to watch the band for the seventh time. She also plans to watch the Rolling Stones in Atlanta in June.

The band attracted people of all ages to the stadium, with a significant proportion of the audience over 60.

The 18 songs played over two hours included a mix of classics and three from the latest record "Hackney Diamonds", the Stones' first album of original material since 2005 and the first recording since drummer Charlie Watts died in 2021.

Other songs they played included "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Out of Time", all to massive applause.

Richards, whose song-writing partnership with Jagger is one of the most enduring and successful in rock, sang "Little T&A."

The Stones closed the show with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". They head to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for a special performance this week.

Fans, however, worried that this could be one of the last tours by the Stones.

"Every time we see them, we wonder if it's going to be the last. That's our fear," said Savannah Welch, who traveled from Austin and brought along her son Charlie.

Rolling Stones Kick-Start ‘Hackney Diamonds’ Tour With Thrilling Houston Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome , and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.

The first step was Houston’s NRG Stadium on Sunday night. After a strong opening set by Gary Clark Jr. that centered around his new LP, JPEG Raw , the band took the stage to the familiar opening notes of “Start Me Up.” This is the first time Mick Jagger has faced a stadium crowd since his 80th birthday last year, but his voice and body seem like they stopped aging sometime around Steel Wheels . It’s almost impossible to fully believe until you see it in person. (“People say Joe Biden is too old to be president,” an elderly woman behind me said early in the night. “They need to look at Mick!”)

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

He wasn’t kidding. The 1965 Aftermath track wasn’t played live once until their 2022 European tour, and this was the first time it crossed the Atlantic. But it’s not something you hear much on classic rock radio, and the audience reaction was pretty muted at first. “I don’t think you really knew it,” Jagger said at the end. “But you got to know it as it went along.”

The Hackney Diamonds portion of the evening began at this point with leadoff single “Angry,” which popped onstage much like it did during their surprise album release show at the New York club Racket last year. “Beast of Burden” won the fan vote for the night, and it provided veteran backup Stones singer Bernard Fowler with a much-deserved spotlight moment. “You’ve got one more vote in November,” Jagger said. “Don’t forget to vote then too. What to play now? Something old … something new.”

At the midway point of every Rolling Stones concert in recent memory, Jagger introduces the band one by one before heading offstage so Keith Richards can sing a couple of songs. For some reason, perhaps to squeeze more new songs into the set without cutting any of the standards, Richards was limited to just a single tune. He made it count by singing 1981’s “Little T & A” for the first time since 2016, though it was disappointing he didn’t get a chance to break out “Tell Me Straight” from Hackney Diamonds . It feels inevitable that’ll happen before this tour ends.

Jagger returned for “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Gimme Shelter,” which gave new background singer Chanel Haynes a chance to emerge from the wings and show off her stunning pipes. She first entered Stones World in 2022 when Sasha Allen, their previous background singer, couldn’t make a Milan show. Haynes was playing the lead role in the West End musical Tina at the time, and she parachuted in at the last second to save the show. This frustrated the producers of Tina , who fired her for handing the show off to her understudy that night when she wasn’t ill, but it impressed the Stones enough to hire her for this tour.

The main set wrapped up with “Honky Tonk Women,” “Miss You,” “Paint It Black,” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” These are songs they’ve done hundreds and hundreds of times for good reason. The hardcores may yearn for deeper cuts like “Memory Motel” or “Moonlight Mile,” but Jagger knows they’d cause many people to sit down and start scrolling through Instagram. And when you have a song like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” in your repertoire, you simply have to play it every time you do a gig.

“Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” one of the finest songs on Hackney Diamonds , kicked off the brief encore set. If it wasn’t challenging enough to channel Merry Clayton a few songs back, Haynes had to now deliver Lady Gaga’s soaring vocal parts from the original recording. Unsurprisingly, she crushed it. For a moment, it really felt like witnessing a scene from some alternate-universe version of A Star Is Born.

The night closed out with a joyous “Satisfaction,” meaning they played just three songs from Hackney Diamonds. That’s typical for a tour in support of a latter-day Rolling Stones album, but this one really deserved more. They dropped “Midnight Rambler,” one of the Richards songs, and the acoustic set to make room for the three new ones in the show, but it be worth further restructuring to squeeze in “Whole Wide World,” “Bite My Head Off,” and “Tell Me Straight.” These are stellar songs that deserve a spot in the set, even if it means tossing aside “Paint It Black” or “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” sometimes.

Rolling Stones kick off 48th tour with ‘Hackney Diamonds’ cuts and classics in Houston

The Rolling Stones opened their Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds on Sunday to a sold-out crowd of more than 70,000 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Stones played just three new tracks from the album, choosing to focus instead on classic hits including “Start Me Up,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Satisfaction,” according to a press release. The decision to focus on older material was not unsurprising for a group with more than six decades of songs to choose from.

It was the rockers’ first performance of material from their 2023 effort “Hackney Diamonds” since the album’s surprise release at the 600-seat club Racket in New York last October. (Fans and celebrities packed that tiny venue expecting merely a Stones show and instead were treated to a breadth of new songs — and a Lady Gaga cameo.)

As the tour rolls on, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and company plan to make stadium stops in Glendale, Ariz.; Las Vegas; Seattle; East Rutherford, N.J.; Foxboro, Mass.; Orlando; Atlanta; Philadelphia; Cleveland; Denver; Chicago; Vancouver; Inglewood; and Santa Clara.

When the Stones hit SoFi Stadium this summer, they’ll be accompanied by the War and Treaty on July 10 and the Linda Lindas on July 13.

“Hackney Diamonds” is the rockers’ first studio album of original material in nearly two decades, following 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” It’s also the Stones’ first LP since the death of founding drummer Charlie Watts in 2021. It’s the first time the band has been on the road since its 60th anniversary tour in 2022, and the tour will also feature a stop at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on May 2.

“Charlie was one of the funniest guys I’ve ever known,” Richards told Times music critic Mikael Wood in 2021, “and the most unlikely man to be famous. He hated that side of the job and used to savagely take the piss out of it.”

When “Hackney Diamonds” game out, Wood wrote in his album review, “The songs blend the same ingredients the Stones have been using since the beginning — blues, rock, soul, country, gospel — but they’re tighter and punchier than on any of the band’s previous late-era LPs.”

Meanwhile, according to Rolling Stone , back at the Houston concert one fan said, “People say Joe Biden is too old to be president. They need to look at Mick!”

That said, the Rolling Stones’ 48th tour is sponsored by AARP.

'We are close enough to drool on Mick’s shoes' | Thousands of fans attend Rolling Stones concert in Houston

One of rock’s most iconic bands is rolling out a new tour, which started in Houston on Sunday.

The  Rolling Stones kicked off their Hackney Diamonds Tour at NRG Stadium, where several fans indeed got their Satisfaction of seeing one of their favorite concerts.

We heard several fans say they’ve seen them multiple times. One fan even said it was his 85th time seeing the Stones live. For a mom and daughter who traveled from Iowa, it was their first time.

“I grew up with them and you grew up with them too,” Kat Nizzi said as she gestured to her mom, Wendy Rains.

“We are close enough to drool on Mick’s shoes so we are really happy,” Rains said.

The rock and roll legends took the stage with several classics including Paint it Black, Sympathy for the Devil, Start Me Up and many others.

Since they dropped a new album back in October 2023, fans were curious to see how it would be performed.

“We know all the classics, but I’ve listened to the new album Hackney Diamonds maybe 25 times, I’m thrilled to see how they play it live,” Thomas Rauschen said.

Sunday’s show still had floor tickets available hours before the show for around $1,000 on Ticketmaster, while seats in the 600 sections were selling for below $100. For many fans, they get to enjoy the show with their parents.

“When you grow up listening to a band like that, you can’t beat it, it’s iconic,” Peyton Pippin from Lafayette, Louisiana said.

The Stones capped off a week of enjoying several of Houston’s attractions. Mick Jagger visited Johnson Space Center and posted photos of him outside of several businesses, including Goode Co. BBQ.

The Best Time of Year To Rent in Houston, TX: When Renters Can Find Deals

Planning on moving to Houston and hoping for a deal? If so, timing is the key to unlocking the best rental deals. If you search when there are move-in specials and lower rent prices, you have a better chance of finding a home you love for less.

In many cases, renters aim to move when school is out or weather conditions are favorable. But this can often result in higher rental prices due to increased demand.

So when is the right time if you’re trying to save on rent in Houston ? Read on for what we discovered through Realtor.com® rental data and more.

When is the best time of year to find move-in specials in Houston?

downtown houston tour

(Realtor.com)

Renting slows down after the summer months and doesn’t pick up again until February, making September through February the best time of year to rent in Houston. That’s when you’ll find the lowest rental rates.

You can also use other windows of opportunity to find move-in specials:

  • During market fluctuations: Economic changes such as job market shifts can compel landlords to offer specials to maintain occupancy rates. Keeping an eye on local news and market trends can help you spot these opportunities.
  • Middle of the month: Whether you’re moving during a summer month or a slower winter month, try to time your move for the middle of the month. With less competition for rentals , landlords might be more inclined to offer a midmonth special.
  • After construction: The influx of new developments in an area can lead to a surplus of rental properties. This can result in more favorable terms for renters.

Types of move-in specials in Houston

downtown houston tour

Here are a few types of move-in specials to look for if you’re on the hunt for an affordable rental in Houston:

  • Reduced rent for the initial months: In this case, the landlord offers a lower rate for the first few months of the lease. This is an attractive option for renters looking to save money upfront so they have room in their budget for new furniture.
  • Waived or reduced security deposit: Some landlords will eliminate or reduce the upfront security deposit. This can be a significant financial relief for a renter with a tight budget.
  • Complimentary amenities: Imagine having free access to gyms, pools, and clubhouses. Some properties offer these perks, which means an enhanced lifestyle with no added monthly expenses. Though this offer might not mean you’ll pay the lowest rental rate possible, it can add value to your living experience.
  • Moving assistance: To ease the logistical and financial stress of moving, some property managers provide free moving services or rental truck vouchers.
  • Gift cards or cash bonuses: Some property owners offer gift cards or cash bonuses when a new renter signs a lease, providing immediate rewards that serve as a warm welcome.

While these offers are enticing, it’s crucial to stay vigilant to avoid rental scams . Verify that you’re dealing with the real landlord or property management company before sharing any personal information or engaging in any kind of transaction. One way to play it safe is to search for Houston rentals on trusted sites only.

Do Houston apartments offer lower rates at different times of the year?

downtown houston tour

Yes, rental rates in the Houston metropolitan areas fluctuate seasonally depending on local demand, rental comp trends, and the current economy.

For a general idea of rent trends in Houston, we pulled the median rent for 2023.

  • January: $1,398
  • February: $1,416
  • March: $1,435
  • April: $1,438
  • May: $1,428
  • June:$1,417
  • July: $1,432
  • August: $1,406
  • September: $1,402
  • October: $1,374
  • November: $1,371
  • December: $1,396

From February through July, Houston rental rates were at their highest—in 2023, the average rental in April was $1,438. However, rents started declining in October, which could signal an ideal time to search for an affordable rental .

Seasonal fluctuations are not unique to Houston; they’re a trend seen in other major U.S. cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.

In New York City, for instance, the difference between rental prices in the summer and winter can be as much as 4.7%, or about $139 a month.

Can Houston rent prices be negotiated?

downtown houston tour

Understanding effective negotiation techniques is crucial, whether you’re new to renting or have years of experience. Here are some tips to help you navigate the negotiation process:

  • Research comparable rentals : Knowledge is power in negotiation. Before approaching a landlord, gather information about the going rates for similar apartments. This data will be a strong foundation for your argument, enabling you to confidently discuss lowering the rent or developing better lease terms. Websites and local listings can provide insights into current market rates.
  • Highlight your qualities as a renter: Make yourself stand out as an ideal renter. If you have a steady income, a good credit score, and a history of being responsible in your past rentals , highlight these points. Landlords value renters who are unlikely to cause issues or default on rent, so knowing you’re a low-risk renter can give you an edge in the negotiations.
  • Request a longer lease term: Stability is often more valuable to a landlord than higher rent since it means less frequent turnover—and lower costs. So, if you can do so, offer to sign a longer lease term.
  • Negotiate at the right time: Your timing can significantly affect your success in negotiating . These discussions during off-peak seasons when demand is typically lower, for instance, can lead to more flexible terms and pricing.

Once you’re ready to begin your search, explore a trusted rental app like Realtor.com . Ranked No. 1 for the most rental options in Houston, it offers the Real View™ filtering options so you can find your top rental. Get started today.
