Welcome to the blue ridge parkway tour.

Experience the beautiful southeast along the Blue Ridge Parkway! Cruise from the edge of the Great Smokies National Park to Shenandoah on this scenic highway bathed in blue mist. Snap photos from jaw-dropping overlooks, spot incredible wildlife, and uncover the fascinating history and legends of the Cherokee as you drive. This self-guided driving tour reveals the parkway’s best sites and the hidden history behind them all!

Begin your tour in Cherokee, Asheville, Roanoke, or Afton, and drive in either direction.

About the Tour

Your Blue Ridge Parkway Scenic Drive tour can begin at any of the following locations: Cherokee, NC; Asheville, NC; Roanoke, VA; Afton, VA. From there, you can drive in either direction.

The tour is broken up into three sections: Cherokee to Asheville, Asheville to Roanoke, and Roanoke to Skyline Drive. If you want to see the whole parkway, from Great Smoky Mountains National Park all the way to Shenandoah National Park, you can do so! But if you’d rather break your trip up into smaller pieces and explore at different times, that’s also absolutely an option. Once you buy this tour, it’s yours for life so that you can explore the Blue Ridge Parkway entirely on your own schedule.

Cherokee to Asheville

Discover North Carolina’s stunning beauty along the westernmost stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. While driving, you’ll have the opportunity to stop at countless jaw-dropping overlooks such as Cowee Mountain and Cherry Cove Overlooks. Some of these also feature incredible hiking trails, like Skinny Dip Falls Trail, which leads to a sparkling wilderness waterfall.

As you drive, you’ll also get acquainted with the Native tribes of the region, such as the Cherokee. You’ll hear plenty of history and legends belonging to these people and revisit dark yet important periods of time like the infamous Trail of Tears. Plus, dig into the history of Asheville as you approach North Carolina’s most picturesque city!

Asheville to Roanoke

Watch the serenity of North Carolina give way to the ruggedness of Virginia along this middle stretch of the Parkway. Experience stunning vistas at Chestoa Viewpoint and Grandview Overlook, visit critical monarch butterfly migration routes, and uncover unlikely local heroes like a bear named Mildred.

Along the way, get ready to pass plenty of small, historic towns as well. Looking out across those distant villages, you’ll learn about the history of industry in the Appalachians—the rise, the fall, and the persistence of the hardy residents of these towns.

Roanoke to the Skyline Drive

Bridge the gap between the Blue Ridge Parkway and the breathtaking Skyline Drive with this easternmost portion of your tour. Cruise across scenic mountain landscapes that were tourist hotspots even before the ubiquity of the automobile, like the Peaks of Otter. Check out parts of the famous Appalachian Trail. Get to know the Seneca and the adventures of a little-known 1700s wilderness pioneer. And end it all at another national park well worth exploring!

Whether you’re looking to enhance a scenic drive or really dive into the weeds and explore, this 3-part tour gives you the tools to do it. So what are you waiting for? Buckle up and hit the road!

This tour also includes a bonus walking tour of Asheville.

  • K9478JOdanaa 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A sprinkle in nature This was undoubtedly the best part of my trip to Asheville, NC. This was a trip to see the Biltmore Estate at Christmas. In doing so I decided I wanted a day in nature. I could not have met a better human being than David! David promptly arrived at 9am. At the Asheville convention center parking lot. There were three (3) of us on the tour. Due to the rain he did offer anyone the opportunity to cancel and we were all in for the adventure. As we loaded up in his truck ( very clean) he provided fresh baked cookies and canteen(s) of water for the hike. (No you can’t keep the canteen and yes, David bakes) 😊 the ride out was about 30 minutes I assume. The conversations were so good I really don’t know exactly how long it took. He did stop to give us a bathroom break before reaching the hiking location. David was so knowledgeable about the area and the different leaves. As we climb up and down to get different views of the waterfalls he explained where to step how to protect ourselves on the slick leaves. The rain had turned into a drizzle and then it was non existent. He informed us along the way on how much farther it was til we reached the falls. The hike was amazing. We saw two falls that day and he even took us on a scenic drive afterwards. He stopped along the road whenever I wanted a pic. I can’t wait to return in the Spring. This is money well spent. Please book with him if you are ever in the area. You will not be disappointed. Best day ever David! Thank you for the memories. Read more Written November 28, 2023

The meeting point was easy to find. Company provided comfortable van. We visited four beautiful waterfalls, went for hiking. We learned a lot about the history of the Blue Ridge Parkway, local flora and fauna, biodiversity of the area, and the forestry movement in the US. Places we visited on this tour were unique and beautiful. Jennifer recommended us several good local restaurants and farmers market we really enjoyed after the tour. I would love to come again to take another trip with Jennifer and the company. Read more Written October 11, 2023

The scenery was beautiful, and he was patient with us as we learned the ropes of tandem kayaking. He was knowledgeable about the area and wildlife/plant life around the lake, and was a great person to converse with. He even sent us recommendations on hikes and best trails to explore in the Blue Ridge Mountain area that we would have otherwise overlooked. I would highly recommend a tour with him to anyone! • jenniferpL5121YP 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles This was an amazing kayaking experience that we cannot wait to do again! If you are ever in the Lake Lure or Asheville area, we highly recommend taking time for a guided kayak tour with David! I finally gathered the nerve to kayak after wanting to do so for a long time. As a first time kayaker, David quickly put me at ease with his incredible kindness and knowledge. He provided helpful tips prior to our tour to ensure our safety and a great time. He also reached out to us prior to meeting to ensure we knew where to meet as well as was available for any questions and help us feel welcome, more at ease. David is an excellent guide! He is incredibly knowledgeable of the history of the area and the wildlife. We also appreciated that he is very easy to talk to (even if you have never met him before, he quickly feels like an old friend of many years) and there was a small group of us, making the experience more personable. David goes the extra mile to ensure a great experience; he even brought everyone cold waters and snacks (as well as the most amazing cookies he baked himself). Our kayaking tour with David far exceeded any expectations! We look forward to booking with him again. Thank you so much, David! 😊 Read more Written July 30, 2023

Having the tour group limited to 4 people made it really easy to have good conversations and personalized the experience. David also picked trails based on us and what we would like and our ability. • 807debip 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Hiking and Kayaking Experience! If you’re in the Asheville area, I highly recommend Hike Bike Kayak Ashville. The Combo Full Day Adventure consisted of hiking in the morning and kayaking in the afternoon. Our guide Dave chose a beautiful 5-mile hike to Twin Falls in the Pisgah National Forest. He scoped the hike based upon our fitness level and desire. Water and snacks were provided for the hike. Dave is a fun, personable and experienced hiker. We were impressed with his knowledge of the plants and flora in the area. After the hike Dave drove us to Lake Julian where a delicious picnic lunch was provided. Next, we had a great kayak experience around the lake. Again, our guide was very knowledgeable about the lake and surrounding area. It was a wonderful place to see eagles, ducks, turtles and other wildlife. Hike Bike Kayak Ashville provided all of the requisite equipment. We highly recommend this tour--you will not be disappointed! Read more Written April 24, 2023

David was an amazing guide and was extremely knowledgeable about the area and specifics of the forest and what it had to offer. • Traci W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Definitely Need to Hike & See the Waterfalls Hike Bike Kayak Asheville!! Although I normally like to do self-guided site-seeing, I've learned that, if my goal is a special and my time is limited, I can see and learn a LOT more if I go with a guide - especially one who is passionate about the setting/location. In my 7 days in the Maggie Valley/Asheville area, my hiking/waterfall excursion with David is the only I've paid for and it was WELL worth it (even considering that, as a solo traveler, I paid for two). Prior to my trip, I vetted out multiple hike excursions through Trip Advisor and Viator and liked that he was a certified naturalist. I reached out and Angela sealed the deal when she described David's tours. Since I was solo and no one else booked, I had to pay for two, but that meant I didn't have to compete with anyone else with my many questions - lol. David was up-to-speed on recent updates/reviews and took precautions to avoid trail issues that the rest of us wouldn't know about. Our multiple creek crossings made it more fun getting to Twin Falls (significant for me because I have twins) and David took us back a different way so we could see several more smaller falls - extra bonus! David was easy to talk to and so informative about the plants/trees, history of all of the area and geography. I'm pretty self-sufficient, but he was always there, to lend a hand if/when needed. When I return, I'm definitely going to do a kayak trip or Blue Ridge Mountain tour with him. This topped off my first and amazing solo vacation! Read more Written October 9, 2022
  • shewholoves2travel 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful Waterfall! Wow! David was so incredibly kind and knowledgeable. He led us on a hike to an absolutely break taking waterfall. My husband and I were on the hike. My husband is in good shape - me, not as much. But the hike was a perfect level of difficulty. I would recommend this to folks who want to adventure out but are unfamiliar with where to go, etc. My husband is usually skeptical of guided tours, but he was so impressed and enjoyed this excursion. Thanks, David! Read more Written July 23, 2022

Driving Tours in Asheville and the High Country

The Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway takes up where Virginia's Skyline Drive leaves off at Rockfish Gap, between Charlottesville and Waynesboro. It then continues winding and twisting along the mountain crests for 469 miles, passing through most of western North Carolina before it reaches Great Smoky Mountains National Park near the Tennessee border.

The parkway links the southern end of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with the eastern entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. When it was begun 60 years ago, the parkway was a great engineering challenge. During the Roosevelt era, it was designed as a federal public-works project to relieve massive unemployment in the region. Its final segment, the Linn Cove Viaduct, was constructed in the 1980s.

The northern section of the parkway skims the crest of the towering Blue Ridge Mountains, with panoramic views of grand valleys on both sides of the road. But when the parkway twists and curls in the more rugged Pisgah and Black mountains to the south, the panoramas become even more dramatic.

Because the mountains are higher in the south -- and the temperatures are lower -- fall foliage is at its most brilliant here earlier in October than in the northern part. October, in fact, is the peak visiting month, as thousands of people come to see the incredible scarlet of sourwoods, orange sassafras, and golden poplars, to name only a few. Traffic moves at a snail's pace in October, and Saturday and Sunday are especially crowded on the parkway. Reservations for lodging and certain attractions in summer and especially in October are essential.

You can detour to Waynesville around the third week of October for the best apple festival in the region. On sale are crafts, cider, apple butter, and fresh and dried apples. Square dancers perform, and bluegrass bands entertain the crowds. Waynesville lies 7 miles from the parkway at milepost 443.1. For more information, contact the Haywood County Apple Harvest Festival, PO Box 600, Waynesville, NC 28786 (tel. 828/456-3021; www.haywood-nc.com).

Elevations range from 649 to 6,053 feet above sea level. The parkway has frequent exits to nearby towns but no tolls. There are 11 visitor contact stations, nine campgrounds (May-Oct only; some need reservations) with drinking water and comfort stations but no shower or utility hookups; restaurants and gas stations; and three lodges, plus one location featuring rustic cabins for overnight stays (reservations recommended). Opening and closing dates for campgrounds and cabins are flexible, so be sure to check in advance. Before you set out, write ahead for maps and detailed information. Contact Superintendent, Blue Ridge Parkway, 199 Hemphill Knob Rd., 1 Pack Sq., Asheville, NC 28803 (tel. 828/298-0398; www.nps.gov/blri).

At many overlooks, a sign is posted showing the symbol of a man with a hiking stick and the word TRAIL, which means that there are marked walking trails through the woods. Some trails take only 10 or 20 minutes and provide a leg-stretching break from the confines of the car; others are longer and steeper and may take an hour or more if you go the entire way.

A few simple rules have been laid down by the National Park Service, which administers the parkway: no commercial vehicles, no swimming in lakes and ponds, no hunting, no pets without a leash, and, above all, no fires except in campground or picnic-area fireplaces. Another good rule is to keep your gas tank half full at all times; this is no place to be stranded. The speed limit is strictly 45 miles an hour.

Don't plan to hurry down the Blue Ridge: Take time to amble and drink in the beauty. If you want to drive the entire length of the parkway, allow at least 2 or 3 days. On the first day, drive the Virginia half; then stop for the night at Boone, North Carolina, not far from the state border. The final two legs of the trip -- from Boone to Asheville and from there to Fontana Village -- can easily be accomplished in another day's drive.

Sights Near the Parkway -- You can veer off the parkway to see several attractions, including Linville Falls Visitor Center (tel. 828/765-1045 ), between Linville and Marion. Parking is available at milepost 316 on the parkway. This is a series of two falls, with an upper level of 12 feet and a lower level of 90 feet. The falls plunge into the 2,000-foot-deep Linville Gorge. A 1-mile round-trip hike takes you to the upper falls; other trails lead to more views. Some of the trails are quite challenging. Open April to November, the falls are free.

The 7,600-acre Linville Gorge Wilderness Area is a primitive natural environment, accessed by foot trails off N.C. 183. You need a permit to enter the area and can obtain one at the district ranger's office (signposted) in Marion.

Another major attraction, Linville Caverns, lies about 65 miles north of the Folk Art Center (milepost 382 on the Blue Ridge Pkwy.), just off U.S. 221 between Linville and Marion (tel. 828/756-4171; www.linvillecaverns.com). The only caverns in North Carolina, these tunnels go 2,000 feet underground. The year-round temperature is 51°F (11°C). Admission is $6 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, and $4 for children 5 to 13. The caverns are open June 1 to Labor Day daily 9am to 6pm; April, May, September, October daily 9am to 5pm; November and March daily 9am to 4:30pm; and December, January, February weekends 9am to 4:30pm.

Shopping -- The best shopping for handmade mountain crafts is at Allanstand Craft Shop, Folk Art Center, Blue Ridge Parkway, milepost 382 (tel. 828/298-7928 ). Here you'll find beautifully made quilts, Granny style, along with pottery, wooden bowls, and even musical instruments. Works displayed were made by members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Asheville NC Waterfall Road Trips & Maps

Looking for the best mother's day weekend specials, brunches, and things to do.

driving tours asheville nc

These scenic drives and maps take you to the best waterfall road trips to enjoy in western North Carolina near Asheville, including the Blue Ridge Parkway. We suggest mapping out your trip with our Top 40 Waterfalls Google Map (below) in advance or getting print directions of the 60 Waterfalls we feature. Often, you cannot rely on your GPS to locate these waterfalls (most do not have a street address or even a roadside sign). Mobile phone reception is very weak in many mountain locations. Stay on state or U.S. highways to guarantee you don't end you on a difficult dirt road deep in the mountains!

Waterfall Scenic Drives & Road Trips

Click on the links for an extensive guide and directions to each waterfall.

#1. Asheville / Brevard Loop Waterfall Tour & Scenic Drive: DuPont Forest, Looking Glass, Graveyard Fields Length: 90 miles round-trip from Asheville This is our favorite waterfall drive from Asheville with plenty of beautiful mountain scenery along the way, and it's short enough to make a very enjoyable day trip from wherever you are staying near Asheville.

  • Begin early in the day and head to DuPont State Forest . From Asheville, take I-26 East to exit 40 for Highway 280/Airport exit toward Brevard . Turn right onto NC Highway 280 and drive about 16 miles. Turn left on U.S. 64 as you enter Brevard past Wal-Mart. Travel east on U.S. 64 for 3.7 miles to the gas station in Penrose. Turn right on Crab Creek Rd, continue 4.3 miles and turn right on DuPont Rd. Ascend and descend; after 3.1 miles, find the Hooker Falls parking lot on the right just before the Little River bridge. Hike to Hooker Falls, Triple Falls, High Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Movie location for The Hunger Games. Read more.
  • Backtrack to Brevard and at the NC 280 intersection, continue STRAIGHT onto US 276 ( Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway ) into Pisgah National Forest.
  • Drive six miles to Looking Glass Falls (view from roadside).
  • Continue about a mile to Moore Cove Falls (1.5 mile roundtrip hike).
  • Continue less than a mile to Sliding Rock and stop if you want to slide down the natural slide.
  • Other nearby waterfalls include Daniel Ridge Falls , Cove Creek Falls , Slick Rock Falls, Twin Falls  and Log Hollow Falls (near Near the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education).
  • Continue driving up the mountain ridge to the Blue Ridge Parkway . For the  Graveyard Fields waterfall, go south 6.8 miles on the Parkway (hike to Skinny Dip Falls at Milepost 417). Or go north to return to Asheville and one of the most beautiful drives in America.
  • See the Pisgah Forest Waterfall & Hiking Map .

#2. Asheville / Highlands Waterfall Tour & Scenic Drive: Gorges State Park, Upper Whitewater Falls, Dry Falls Length: 170 miles round-trip from Asheville There are so many waterfalls on this route, it would take you a few days to see them all. Or save a few for your next trip:

  • Head toward Brevard by driving I-26 East to exit 40 for Highway 280/Airport exit. Turn right onto NC Highway 280. In Brevard, NC 280 will turn into US 64 West. About three miles on other side of Brevard, you can take a short detour to Cathey's Creek Falls .
  • Or continue to Gorges State Park and hike to the beautiful Rainbow Falls and neighboring Turtleback Falls (swimming hole).
  • After that, drive to nearby Upper Whitewater Falls , the highest waterfall in eastern America. It's an easy and quick hike to the overlook to view.
  • Back on US 64, head toward Cashiers. Schoolhouse Falls in Panthertown Valley is well worth a side trip.
  • In Cashiers, detour south four miles to see Silver Run Falls.
  • Return to US 64 and continue toward Highlands . Stop at roadside Dry Falls, walk behind the waterfall. Nearby, drive behind Bridal Veil Falls .
  • If you have time and energy, hike to Glen Falls in Highlands.
  • It's 72 miles to Highlands from Asheville and about half of the drive is curvy mountain roads. So allow plenty of time. Return a faster route to Asheville via Franklin : Follow US 23/441 to US 19/23, most of this drive is expressway and faster, even though it's 84 miles back.

#3. Blue Ridge Parkway Waterfall Drive Tour & Scenic Drive: Linville Falls, Crabtree Falls, Graveyard Fields Length: 204 miles round-trip from Asheville This 102-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most beautiful and highest drives in America. In addition to the waterfalls below, there are many great stops along the way, including Mt. Mitchell , Craggy Gardens , Folk Art Center , Mt. Pisgah and many overlooks. This drive can easily fill your day. Remember, to return to your starting point, it is at least a 204-mile trek! To reduce driving time, take a faster route to a starting point on the Parkway and drive it one way.

  • Starting north and driving down, Linville Falls is the first stop (at Parkway Milepost 316.3). This is the most photographed waterfall in North Carolina. They have a great Visitors Center, picnic area and campground. Moderate hikes (1 to 1.5 miles) take you to overlooks with spectacular views of the falls and Linville Gorge . One hike takes you to the base of the falls.
  • Head south from Linville Falls to Crabtree Falls  (Milepost 339.5). Take 2.5-mile hike through the forest to an up-close view of the beautiful 70-ft. Crabtree Falls.
  • Optional: Exit onto NC Highway 80 North and go two miles for Roaring Fork Falls and Setrock Creek Falls .
  • Stop for a quick look of Glassmine Falls at the overlook at Milepost 362.1. After rainy weather, this waterfall gives a quite impressive vista across the valley.
  • The next waterfall is 50 miles down the Parkway (see other stops along the way on our Blue Ridge Parkway Guide ), with plenty of beautiful mountain scenery along the way. At Milepost 412, US 276 crosses the Parkway. Take a detour south on the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway to Sliding Rock (8 miles) and Looking Glass Falls (10 miles). Or continue on Parkway to your next stop.
  • At the Looking Glass Rock Overlook at Milepost 417, there is a 1/2-mile hike to Skinny Dip Falls , a popular summer swimming spot and beautiful setting any time of the year.
  • The last stop is Graveyard Fields at Milepost 418.8, with hiking trails through a highland meadow that takes you to two waterfalls. The most beautiful is just 1/3 mile from the parking area!
  • Driving to the end of the Parkway near Cherokee? Just one mile from Milepost 455.7 (on U.S. Highway 19 south) is Soco Falls .

#4. Great Smoky Mountains Waterfalls: Soco Falls, Mingo Falls, Deep Creek Length: 44 miles Begin in the Maggie Valley area (about 35 miles west of Asheville) and head toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park ! Stop in Maggie Valley for great shopping or tour the amazing Wheels Through Time , a museum of motorcycles and automobiles. You will also go through Bryson City and Cherokee , with much to see along the way.

  • From Maggie Valley, drive south on U.S. Highway 19 toward Cherokee. In just a few miles, you will pass the Blue Ridge Parkway. 1.5 miles past the Parkway, look for a small parking area on the left for Soco Falls (no signs there!). It's a short walk to an observation deck. To reach the base of the twin waterfall, carefully climb down a very steep trail.
  • Turn around and go back to the Blue Ridge Parkway and go south on the Parkway toward the Great Smoky Mountains. Ride the Parkway for about 13 miles to the end near the Park entrance. Turn left on US 441 South, then left onto Big Cove Road in about 3/4 mile. Drive about five miles to Mingo Falls .
  • Go back toward Cherokee and left onto US 441 South. After you go through Cherokee, turn right onto U.S. 19 South to Bryson City. Before you reach downtown Bryson City, turn right onto Deep Creek Road to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It's only about 2.5 miles to the Deep Creek Campground inside the Park, with the parking area for the hiking trail along the creek to Indian Falls, Toms Branch Falls and Juney Whank Falls .
  • Drive back to downtown Bryson City for some great restaurant choices. To return to the Asheville area (60 miles by faster freeway), take U.S. Highway 74 east to I-40 West.

#5: NC Highway 215 Waterfalls Length: 20.7 miles Begin at US Highway 64 west of Brevard at the intersection of NC Highway 215, part of the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway, and travel north toward and past the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can return to Asheville via the Blue Ridge Parkway.

  • At 7.5 miles, stop to see three waterfalls, including roadside twin waterfalls French Broad and Shoals Creek .
  • At 10.2 miles, take a detour in Pisgah National Forest to the hike to Courthouse Falls .
  • At 14 miles, take another detour to see Dill Falls and Upper Dill Falls in Nantahala National Forest.
  • At 17.3 miles (about 8/10 of a mile past the intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway), take a hike to Wildcat Falls.
  • At 20.7 miles, stop at the historic stone bridge over the Pigeon River to see Sunburst Falls .

#6. Chimney Rock Waterfall Tour: Catawba Falls, Hickory Nut Falls, Pearson's Fall Length: 64 miles Begin this tour in Old Fort , 24 miles east of downtown Asheville on I-40. Then travel south to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure area, and on to Saluda. Both Chimney Rock and downtown Saluda have great shopping and dining options. Or stop in downtown Hendersonville along the way.

  • From I-40, drive three miles from the Old Fort exit into the Pisgah National Forest to Catawba Falls . Take a beautiful 1.5-mile hike to the waterfall. (If you are a very experienced hiker and good at climbing up rocks and a very steep trail, continue to the upper falls.)
  • Return to I-40 and go west to Black Mountain and take NC Highway 9 South to Bat Cave. This twisty scenic 17-mile drive is known as the Black Mountain Rag, named for an old fiddle tune about the dark green Lauada Firs that give the Black Mountains their name. In Bat Cave, turn left onto U.S. Highway 74 to Chimney Rock Park . Park admission is required to drive up to the parking area for the hike to Hickory Nut Falls , a 404-ft. waterfall that is most impression after rainy weather. 32 miles.
  • From Chimney Rock, drive back to Bat Cave and follow U.S. 64 East to Hendersonville, through apple orchard country. Go east on I-26 to exit 59 for Saluda and drive a few miles on US Highway 176 toward Tryon to Pearson's Falls .
  • For a roadside waterfall about 10 miles from Pearson's Falls, see Shunkawauken Falls .

Barnardsville, NC

driving tours asheville nc

Adventure Center of Asheville’s Adventure Mountain Off-Road Tours in Barnardsville, N.C ., is Asheville and Western North Carolina’s newest ultimate off-road driving experience.  Drive or Ride our Guided Tours in 4-person Off-Road Vehicles (ORV) on 220 acres of scenic mountain trails climbing up 1,400 feet on Adventure Mountain.  With an elevation of 4,200 feet at the peak, Adventure Mountain off-road trails travel through hardwood forests and extreme mountain terrain.   Start with a training area to develop your off-road skills, then follow our guide on technical trails, rock and log obstacles, hill climbs, and spectacular views.

Our ORVs combine power and function to provide new or experienced drivers with a great adventure. Although they can go fast, our tours are not focused on speed but on learning and practicing the skills of managing challenges inherent in off-roading such as maneuvering around and over obstacles, climbing steep grades but also crawling down steep gradients, selecting the best course to traverse difficult spots successfully, and understanding capabilities of the ORV such as lateral stability, clearance, wheel locking and maneuvering capabilities.

Our training area will provide an opportunity to practice in an active, hands-on start. Once you’ve mastered your machine, it’s game on!! Our ORV course will include the best of our Adventure Mountain property: a 1,400-foot elevation change with the highest peak at 4,232 feet while enjoying panoramic views of the highest mountains in the Eastern United States (Blue Ridge Mountains, Balsam Mountains, Mount Mitchell, and the Great Smoky Mountains).  Our 220 wooded acres have 7+ miles of ridgeline, lush valley, cliffside, creekside, and crossing trails.

Our experienced and knowledgeable guides will lead the way while communicating with our guests.  Z1R Road Max Helmets are provided for each participant and are required for safety and comfort.

The 220 acre Adventure Mountain property has a vast history on this steep mountain of homesteading, farming, tree harvesting, and now protection and recovery. Although the off road tour is an adventure it is also an opportunity to see and learn the challenges and successes of farming and living off of the steep and rocky lands of the historic Appalachian Mountains of Western NC. You will visit the remains of the old homestead, learn how this farming community north of the “big city” of Asheville was settled and how the families struggled and survived in this steep and lush valley that is still home to generations of families and farmers. The most recent use of the mountain was timber harvesting. Our team of knowledgeable guides will share the importance of forest management and care following such stark impacts as clear cutting forests, invasive plant invasion and native plant elimination. They will share the efforts Adventure Mountain Resort is undertaking to not only protect and preserve this mountain but to remove invasive plants and weaker plant stands to replace with native and more vibrant and sustainable forest structures.

Adventure Center of Asheville’s Adventure Mountain Off-Road Tours is not at our in-town location!! It is a short scenic drive from downtown Asheville just outside of the small community of Barnardsville, NC, in the Paint Fork Road Valley. The drive is the perfect distance to be as close to Asheville as possible while allowing you to get out in the woods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Probably! Depending on the weather your clothes and shoes could get wet and muddy. The vehicles are open-air without heat or AC so be prepared for all elements.

You may also get into a muddy ORV that has just been on a tour.

Dress for the changing mountain weather and temperatures. We recommend you check the forecast for Barnardsville, N.C. for your tour day. It can be cool in the morning and late afternoon but warm mid-day. Layers are highly recommended unless it’s full summer or winter. The vehicles are open-air without heat or AC so be prepared for all elements.

Comfortable Closed Toe Shoes are Required.  Shoes and Clothes may get dirty.

  • We will provide snacks and water at certain breaks along the tour. You are welcome to bring your own water container but we ask that no “sticky” drinks be opened except when out of the vehicle as spills are likely and messy for you & the next Guests. Water with reusable water bottles is recommended.
  • No single-use plastic is allowed on tours.
  • Cell phones and/or cameras are welcome. There will be secure storage available but all items brought are “At Your Own Risk.” You will typically have opportunities to take pictures and videos inside and outside of your ORVs.
  • Bring your own bandana or buff for your personal helmet liner.
  • Bring a valid driver’s license for all drivers.

Hats- We will be wearing helmets so hats should be left in your vehicle.

Firearms/knives/sharp objects- No firearms, please. No knives unless secured where they will not puncture soft goods. Damage coverage does not cover damage from personal items (knives, pens, etc.) cutting/tearing seats. Please remove all those items from your pockets.

Valuables- Wallets, jewelry, and all valuables are best locked into your car, and keys are secured in our office. You can take them with you but if lost they are probably lost for good or our search will likely require a later time (based on our tour schedule) and a fee for the time vehicles and staff are occupied searching. Best to leave that all secure in your vehicle.

Trash/Food- No plastic & excessive trash/food. Please allow time to eat meals before arriving or prior to your trip. There are a few shared picnic tables if you would like to eat prior to or following your tour.

Single-use plastics

Our goal is to make it as fun, interesting, and exciting as possible while keeping safety as our top priority. Guests are allowed to drive. Training and practice areas are included at the start of the tour. The equipment we provide is top-of-the-line and exceeds any other tour we’ve experienced in the Southeast. This will improve your overall experience. Your guide is not just there to guide you but to teach and to help you make choices on the easiest and most challenging options when possible. Our tours are small and our property is pristine. You will experience obstacles, climbs, descents, and technical challenges.

There will be some “power areas” where you will accelerate but this tour is not meant to be a “fast” experience. This is an off-road experience with rugged terrain that may include steep climbs, uneven terrain, jolting bumps, trees, tree branches, water, mud, slippery areas, dust, and other objects that might become airborne or could hit or be hit by Guests or the ORV. You or another tour member might get stuck or have mechanical challenges that cause the group to focus on those issues which can alter any tour. There is always the limited possibility a vehicle can roll but speed and lack of training/supervision is the most common cause of rolling vehicles. This is part of off-roading and will be handled as quickly as possible but can change the tour experience.

Your Guide to the Locally Loved

The Best Tours in Asheville, North Carolina

The 15 Fun and Unique Tours in Asheville, NC

Best Tours in Asheville, NC

I love taking tours when I travel, and I take tours at home when I’m not traveling! Joining tours to explore where you live is like having a special date with a loved one to connect deeper and feel more appreciation each time.

I consider myself an independent traveler, but I always include a dose of locally operated tours and experiences offered by locals to further explore whatever excites me the most about the destination.

Asheville is a small city with a population of less than 100,000 – but it has a lot to offer! From its architectural gems and exciting farm-to-table food movement and beer scene to its epic outdoors and talented artists, there is something for everyone here. Asheville is also full of projects, nonprofits, and businesses that form a support network for our underserved communities.

I’ve compiled a list of tours that reflect all aspects of Asheville’s identity. You’ll see options to explore our city’s history, outdoors , street art, food and beer scene , art shops, and our most famous buildings: The Biltmore House and the Omni Grove Park Inn. But no matter which type of tour you choose, you’re bound to walk away with a deeper understanding of this great city!

Don’t forget to check out our web story: The 15 Fun and Unique Tours in Asheville, NC

The Best Tours in Asheville, NC

1. get to know asheville’s landmarks by taking its most iconic tour.

Unique Tours in Asheville: LaZoom Comedy Tours

The purple buses of LaZoom Comedy Tours represent one of the best tours in Asheville and are a city landmark. The first thing I saw when I first visited Asheville from Argentina, looking for a new cool place to live in the United States, was a guy dressed as a nun, riding a bike, and angrily screaming at a purple bus. I instantly knew this was the place for our family to move next. My kids had to grow up near Sister Bad Habit!

These “historical and hysterical” multi-award-winning tours mix comedy, history, and partying on purple buses guided by eccentric characters. The locally owned and operated tour company was founded by two street performers 16 years ago and now offers four tours.

Fun Tours in Asheville: LaZoom Comedy Tours

“Hey Asheville” is a city tour and vaudeville on wheels. “Fender Bender” mixes live music on the bus and beer tasting, making an original, fun Asheville brewery tour. “Ghosted” offers a haunted comedy tour, and “Lil Boogers” is their kid-friendly option (the others have age limits, so please check ahead of time). All the tours are dog friendly!

2. See Asheville’s Top Attractions on the Gray Line Asheville Trolley

The Gray Line Asheville Trolley tour is one of the most popular Asheville tours, and for a good reason. It offers an excellent, award-winning Hop-On Hop-Off Tour that the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County has endorsed.

Visitors can listen to the live narration and get off the bus at one of the 10 stops (or all of them!) along the 15-mile route to experience Asheville’s breweries, shops, and the urban scene. Also, tickets are valid for two consecutive days!

This locally owned and operated business also offers a fun ghost tour, covering some of our most famous specters (we have plenty!), including the friendly Tim Burton-like ghost of the Pink Lady of the Grove Park Inn and the mystery of the Nazi agents based in Asheville.

The seasonal Holly Jolly Christmas Trolley Tour includes live music and Christmas caroling while driving past festive holiday decorations in downtown Asheville, Biltmore Village, and the Montford and Grove Park neighborhoods.

3. Explore Downtown on an Asheville Walking Tour

This self-guided Urban Trail Tour is a free audio tour offered by the City of Asheville and is a great way to get to know the city’s history at your own pace. It starts at Pack Place Park and follows 30 stations marked by cool sculptures.

AVL Free Walking Tours offers a tip-based Asheville walking tour that ends with a free scoop of ice cream at The Hop . Their haunted tour (not free) starts at the Riverside Cemetery in the historic district of Montford and goes all the way downtown. It’s the only ghost tour that covers this super interesting cemetery.

The Asheville Coffee Tour features six of Asheville’s best coffee and tea shops. It includes short stops at Asheville’s landmarks and lots of caffeine!

The Asheville Music History Walking Tour explores downtown through the stories of Asheville’s eclectic past and present music scene. It covers the Moogseum (which offers its own tour) and the famous venue The Orange Peel , among other local icons.

Did you know that the Jackson Building, the Battery Park Hotel, and a famous restaurant host ghosts? Last Halloween, my kids and I took the Haunted Asheville Ghost Tour , one of the best Asheville walking tours, and we enjoyed getting a glimpse of the city’s past through these dark stories.

4. Explore Downtown and Its Surroundings on Wheels

Winner of TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice Award, the Tukit Tour Co offers guided tours around downtown on environmentally-friendly, open-air six-seater electric tuk-tuks decorated with LED-lights and equipped with Bluetooth speakers and heated seats. They offer ready-to-go tours and private customized tours.

The Flying Bike provides electric bike tours around town. The Winter Warm Up E-Bike Tour is perfect for chilly days, and it includes stops at two local restaurants, hot cocoa, apple cider, and a visit to the historic Omni Grove Park Inn.

Asheville Adventure Company features a scenic Asheville e-bike sunset tour, perfect for photos all year round but especially in the fall. The e-bike tours are kid-friendly if you’re traveling with kids.

I’ve never taken a Segway tour, but I might because every time I see the Segway riders around my neighborhood, they look so content and relaxed. Moving Sidewalk Segway Tours offers a tour that covers downtown and other areas, like Montford and the greenways in North Asheville. The tour is 10 and up, and training is included!

5. Tour Downtown Asheville while Drinking and Pedaling on an Amazing Pubcycle

Must Try Tours in Asheville: Amazing Pubcycle

Amazing Pubcycle is one of the most trendy Asheville tours. The pedal-powered (motor-assisted) trolleys and their festive, laughing riders are becoming a happy downtown landmark.

The company offers different tours perfect for parties and celebrations, including fun bachelorette parties, but you can also book individual seats. Guests will bring their own and serve their own beer, wine, cider, or seltzer and drink it on a 15-person pedal trolley driven by a certified, funny, and charismatic tour guide.

Tours to Try in Asheville: Amazing Pubcycle

Clients are welcome to wear costumes and bring decorations to customize their ride, so you can imagine what a fun sight these bikes are. The most popular offer is the Pub Tour in downtown Asheville which stops at one of Asheville’s best pubs.

Also, they’re now offering a Trivia Tour on wheels! Riders have to be older than 12. There are 10 pedal seats and room for five non-pedalers. Yes, you do have to pedal, so enjoy your drink and your workout!

6. Embark on an Asheville Scavenger Hunt Tour

This is a fantastic plan for co-workers, friends, or family! Asheville Detours offers personalized team adventures that will bring you around downtown. You’ll follow clues like solving riddles and unscrambling letters while enjoying tasty treats and drinks and participating in fun group activities introducing you to some favorite local businesses.

Asheville Detours has four offerings, and they can all be customized according to your preferences: The Bachelorette Tour, the Authentic Asheville Detour, the Family Fun Detour, and the Team Building Detour. Each hunt is self-guided and lasts approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

Some stops and treats include eating donuts at the beloved Stay Glazed, tasting honey at Asheville Bee Charmer, group crafting at Fired Up, beer and chocolate tastings, and a champagne toast and private tour at Momentum Gallery.

Also, are you looking for the perfect, most unique Asheville gift? They offer “Authentic Asheville” gift boxes featuring local products, an excellent way to keep spreading the love for local businesses!

7. Learn about Asheville’s African American Residents with this Award-Winning Tour

Must Try Tours in Asheville: Hood Huggers

Hood Huggers International’s mission is to “rebuild Affrilachia through art, environment, and social enterprise.” Affrilachia is a term coined by Frank X Walker referring to African Americans living in Appalachia.

In this context, Hood Huggers offers walking and driving tours that take visitors through the past and the present of African Americans in Asheville. This initiative won TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award.

Unique Tours in Asheville: Hood Huggers

Two walking tours cover Eagle Street in downtown Asheville and Burton Street in West Asheville, and the driving tour begins downtown and visits different neighborhoods throughout the city. These Asheville tours cover the history of these communities, current projects, and visions for the future. They are aimed at visitors and locals alike.

If you take these tours, you’ll learn about the history of Asheville, but you’ll also be supporting the economic development of Asheville’s African American communities and businesses. A portion of all proceeds through Hood Huggers International are reinvested in the community.

8. Get a Sugar High at French Broad Chocolate Company

Asheville, North Carolina Tours: French Broad Chocolate

French Broad Chocolate is one of Asheville’s favorite chocolate shops. Locals and visitors love stopping by the iconic blue building of the French Broad Chocolate Lounge in Pack Square and getting something sweet, from housemade bonbons and ice cream to cookies, cakes, and brownies, and a delicious selection of drinking chocolates.

All of the chocolate is made in their chocolate factory, and they offer a fantastic Bean to Bars Chocolate Factory Tour that covers an introduction to a cocoa farm, the company’s story, and an overview of the process of transforming cocoa beans into a chocolate bar. In addition, there are tastings of cacao in its different forms, including, of course, bonbons!

Unique Tours in Asheville: French Broad Chocolate

French Broad Chocolate also offers tastings, so please check their calendar to see if you can catch one of them. This is an excellent tour for kids. I did it with mine years ago. Children under 7 don’t have to pay for a ticket.

9. Explore the River’s Arts District’s Shops and Art Galleries

Tours to Try in Asheville: River's Arts District

There are about 200 studios in the 23 former industrial buildings along this one-mile stretch of the French Broad River called the River’s Arts District (RAD). There are different ways to explore this area, which is also home to excellent restaurants, cafés, and breweries.

Each Saturday, Mountain Mural Tours offers a popular street art tour that departs from the River’s Art District but also includes downtown and West Asheville. You’ll learn about Asheville’s history while seeing some fantastic local art. Your Instagram account will thank you for that photo of a gigantic Dolly Parton!

Asheville, North Carolina Tours: River's Arts District

Flying Bike Tours ‘ West Asheville River Arts District E-Bike Tour stops at some landmarks, including The Marquee, a design center where you’ll find pieces of art of all kinds, and The Peace Garden, an eclectic, beautiful community garden decorated with works from local artists using repurposed materials.

You’ll also love the free, tip-based walking tour offered by AVL Free Walking Tours and the concept of their photo stroll in the RAD, where you’ll relax while someone else takes care of the pictures in one of Asheville’s most photogenic neighborhoods.

On the second Saturday of the month , there are special events in the RAD and a free trolley to tour the shops.

10.  Splash Around in One of the Four Oldest Rivers In the World

Fun Tours in Asheville: French Broad River

Some of the best things to do while in Asheville are to spend time outdoors, hike, enjoy the views, and play in the water. Did you know that Asheville’s French Broad River is among the four oldest rivers in the world?

French Broad Outfitters offers a variety of fun French Broad River floating and kayaking experiences. You’ll love to see Asheville from a different perspective on a warm day and join locals in one of the most beloved Asheville summer activities. They also offer an e-bike Asheville breweries tour and SUP yoga classes.

Asheville Adventure Company organizes guided whitewater French Broad rafting trips that are family-friendly. Wai Maina Asheville SUP Tours provides stand-up paddleboard tours and experiences that the entire family will love.

Zen Tubing will set you up with everything you’ll need to enjoy your lazy river float along the French Broad River like dozens of locals do on warm days. Of course, you’ll need to bring your bathing suit and sunglasses!

11. Take a Photo Tour to Polish Your Photography Skills (or Get Professional Shots)

Asheville Urban Arts Photo Tours offers professional shots in some of the most beautiful urban settings, including Asheville’s cool murals. There are three tours: Downtown Urban Vibe, the River Arts Tour, and the West Asheville Tour.

The promise is to take you to “the most Insta-worthy art spots in Asheville.” You’ll receive a full gallery of ready-to-post photos in five days!

WNC Photo Tours provides private photography tours and workshops at the most scenic locations. You’ll learn how to take better photos with your camera or smartphone. Some of their options include photographing elks, a fall color tour, and one-on-one post-procession sessions. They also offer professional photo sessions.

Asheville Photo Tours ‘ excellent offerings cover vistas and waterfalls, private tours customized to your desires, and photographing the fall colors in the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you loved your photo tour so much you want to keep learning, they also offer private coaching sessions to work with you to develop your skills and online photo critiques.

12. Walk, Ride, Kayak, or Float to Asheville’s Best Breweries

Asheville (aka Beer City , USA) has more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States. With an average of 28.1 breweries per 100,000 residents and 100 local beers, it’s no wonder this city is a paradise for beer lovers worldwide.

Recognized by National Geographic and TripAdvisor, BREW-ed’s Brewery Tours offers one of the best Asheville brewery tours. These informative, educational walking tours are guided by Cicerone-certified guides.

These beer experts will take you to some of the best downtown breweries where, besides tasting the local crafts, you’ll learn about the process of making beer and how Asheville’s beer culture has evolved over the years.

Asheville Brews Cruise is Asheville’s original, 16-year-old brewery tour and promises “an ample amount of beer” in its walking and mobile tours. All tours are knowledge-based and include visits to three or four Asheville breweries, tasting samples, lots of information, and fun guides.

Asheville Adventure Company offers an  E-Bike Brewery Crawl  that combines visits to the most popular breweries, cruising through Asheville’s neighborhoods, and checking out the city’s landmarks. If you are a “go with the flow” type of traveler,  Cedar Rock Adventures ’ Floating Bar Crawl Tour is your best bet!

13.  Eat Your Way through Asheville’s Famous Farm-to-Table Food Scene

Fun Tours in Asheville: Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours

Wherever you come from, I’m sure that exploring this city’s food culture is one of the top things on your Asheville to-do list. These tours will make it easier for you to discover the best local experiences. Enjoy!

Asheville Food Tours is the original walking food tour of downtown Asheville, and it covers an impressive list of restaurant partners. A popular tour is The Food Fan, guided by local food influencer Stu Helm and showcasing his favorite restaurants. The Food Fan’s passion for Asheville’s culinary scene is infectious!

Unique Tours in Asheville: Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours

Imagine yourself strolling around the forest, gathering edibles, and having them cooked for you at an award-winning restaurant. This experience is possible with No Taste Like Home ’s tours, TripAdvisor’s number one foraging activity in the US and one of the best tours in Asheville. You’ll love this authentic “off-the-eaten-path” Asheville experience!

Another TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award winner, Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours offers a three-hour, three-rooftop guided bar tour combining some of the best of what makes Asheville irresistible: outstanding food, great drinks, mountain views, and spectacular sunsets.

14.  Explore the Outdoors With Local Guides

Asheville Hiking Tours offers tours of Asheville’s impressive waterfalls and the best views of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Local guides will take you to their favorite spots while telling you about the local history and environment.

Are you interested in taking a unique wild foraging tour? Asheville Hiking Tours’ excursions include food foraging as well!

Join Asheville Wellness Tours ’ guides for a healing, resetting forest bathing experience, a hike, yoga, and mountain views adventure, or (my favorite) a yoga class with baby goats! Can you imagine a better Asheville tour? I can’t.

Hike Bike Kayak Asheville ‘s personalized tours will show you why Asheville is a favorite outdoor destination. NCLINE Adventures ’ diverse offerings include elopement ceremonies and hiking/fishing trips for couples with different interests. Hike WNC ‘s private Peak-to-Peak Mountain Top Tour offers some of the best views in North Carolina, and it has now added a Blue Ridge Parkway Jeep Tour.

15.  Tour Asheville’s Iconic Biltmore Estate and Omni Grove Park Inn

Tours to Try in Asheville: Biltmore Estate

Visitors with a daytime ticket to visit the Biltmore Estate or overnight guests can participate in the tours offered by the Biltmore . Some tours are self-guided and included with admission, while others have a fee.

Testimonials

I am grateful to DeWayne for collecting and telling stories about our community that might have been lost. These are not only stories of struggle but also stories of great resilience. This experience has given me deeper appreciation for my neighbors and for what we might build together.

The Hood Tour should be called Wonderhood! Hoodaganza! Black Hoodstory! Just calling it a tour is not enough. The history of black Asheville is rich with tragedy, sadness, triumph, and inspiration, and DeWayne Barton brought it all alive for us. We could have gone on for a few hours more – the story of Affrilachian people, their extraordinary achievements and their everyday courage, is so compelling.

Discovering the Best Things to Do in Asheville, NC

W elcome to Asheville, North Carolina! This charming and eclectic city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains is becoming one of the most popular travel destinations in the Southeast United States. With a vibrant art scene, amazing food, and stunning natural landscapes, Asheville is perfect for your next road trip getaway. In this blog post, we’ll take you through the best things to do in Asheville, from visiting the Biltmore Estate to exploring the local food scene.

Get ready to discover Asheville’s gems!

1. Visiting The Biltmore

Discover Asheville’s crown jewel, The Biltmore – America’s largest home! Built by George Vanderbilt, this awe-inspiring 8,000-acre estate and landmark flaunts 250 rooms, beautiful gardens, and state-of-the-art amenities.

Take a guided tour of the house, with many to choose from, wander through the grounds and gardens, and embrace seasonal events. Tours run between $50-$100.

You can read about where I stayed in Asheville in this Omni Grove Park Inn post.

From winter holiday light displays to wine festivals and summer concerts on the estate, there’s something for everyone at The Biltmore.

With docent-led tours and plenty of photo opportunities, The Biltmore Estate is a must-see attraction. And it’s not just a house – it’s like its own town! Plan your visit and pay at the gate to enter the property boundaries.

2. Exploring Antler Hill Village

Discover Antler Hill Village , just a quick stroll from the famous Biltmore House. This charming location, which Vanderbilt refried to as “fine high ridge”, is filled with activities for everyone, including restaurants, a winery, a museum, and plenty of outdoor fun like hiking, biking, and horseback riding. I got lucky to catch the Downton Abbey: The Exhibition when I was there.

Make sure to check out the winery for a tasting and don’t miss the guided evening tour with candlelight and live music. If you’re hungry, head to Cedric’s Tavern for delicious appetizers like Tavern Pimento Cheese and Ham & White Cheddar Fondue, or grab some ice cream at Creamery.

Across the sprawling Biltmore estate, visitors can be found picnicking, playing with their dogs, sunbathing, and enjoying all that this little slice of heaven has to offer.

3. Eating at Biscuit Head and White Duck Taco

Attention all foodies! Asheville is a top food destination, and I had the pleasure of enjoying a handful of 10/10 meals; Biscuit Head and White Duck Taco.
