Antarctica – Snow Hill Emperor Penguin Expedition 2025

Spaces Available

15 Nov 2025 –  28 Nov 2025

In 2004, Quark Expeditions made polar history when they conducted the first-ever ground visit to the remote emperor penguin colony near Snow Hill Island, Antarctica. Driven by a true expeditionary spirit—and guided by years of polar expertise—our team sailed past masses of dense ice and thick, tabular icebergs in the Weddell Sea to experience the legendary rookery, which now numbers 8,000 breeding pairs of emperor penguins.

Today, it is one of the most exclusive wildlife viewing experiences on the planet. We invite you—almost two decades after our milestone visit of 2004— to embrace the thrill of the search as we once again set out to visit to the emperor penguins at Snow Hill Island.

Experience a true polar quest as we journey on our new ship, Ultramarine, which is equipped with two twin-engine helicopters that will fly guests to the vicinity of this rarely-visited rookery, whereupon they will walk across the thick sea ice to stand within meters of the most coveted penguin species on the planet. Anticipate scenes reminiscent of “March of the Penguins” and BBC’s “Frozen Planet.” Just imagine the penguins tobogganing across the ice towards the sea. Such wildlife moments are too precious for words!

This will be Marius Coetzee’s and Dale Morris’s combined 8th expedition to Antarctica and they simply cannot wait to guide you on this once-in-a-lifetime photo expedition. Join ORYX on a voyage where the extraordinary becomes the every day, and let the awe-inspiring beauty of Antarctica overwhelm your senses and provide your cameras with full memory cards!

Destination Allure

The route will focus entirely on the one of the rarest wildlife opportunities on the planet: the colony of thousands and thousands of rarely- seen emperor penguins. The emperor penguin colony at Snow Hill is the goal of this expedition.

Month of Travel

This Snow Hill expedition is arranged early in the season to focus on the rarely seen emperor penguin interactions at their rookery.

Embrace the expeditionary spirit on a quest to reach the colony of thousands of pairs of emperor penguins and their chicks.

We will be cruising on the new, very comfortable, safe and ice-strengthened intimate 150-passenger expedition ship; the Ultramarine. Enjoy helicopter sightseeing and access to the emperor penguin colony as well as Zodiac cruising for unique perspectives of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Guided Experience

Local knowledge of the region and its wildlife is key to crafting the ultimate photography tour experience. Combined with the photographic expertise of your ORYX Photo Tour Leader, and you are in for an adventure that will further fuel your excitement for photography and the destination.

Day 1: Arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Upon arriving in this fascinating city, known for its architecture and rich European heritage, you will independently transfer to your group hotel (pre-expedition hotel night included in mandatory transfer package).

Day 2: Fly to Ushuaia, Argentina and embark

After an early breakfast at the hotel, your group will transfer to the airport and board our private charter flight to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Upon arrival, you will be transferred from the airport to a central downtown location to enjoy time on your own to explore quaint Ushuaia—the world’s southernmost city—before making your way to the pier. After a late afternoon embarkation, you will sail along the historic Beagle Channel, which transects the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of SouthAmerica. Enjoy the air of anticipation as you depart—the next land you see will be the Antarctic!

Days 3-4: Crossing the Drake Passage

The unpredictable and exciting Drake Passage, which lies at the confluence of the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Southern oceans, is an adventureunto itself. While being well taken care of by our expert onboard staff and expedition team, you’ll have plenty of time to gaze out at the expansive ocean waters, photograph seabirds as they swoop around the ship, and get to know your Expedition Team and fellow travelers.

Day 5: Navigating into the Weddell Sea

Onboard presentations by world- respected experts will enrich your polar quest, conveying what it was like a century ago for the brave polar heroes who embraced the unknown. You’ll also learn more about the ice- dwelling emperor penguins.

Days 6-10: Weddell Sea and the quest to land at Snow Hill

The journey toward Snow Hill Island will put you in explorer mode as the captain and Expedition Leader keep you updated through weatherbriefings, meteorological and sea ice condition reports. The thickness of ice will determine how close Ultramarine can get to Snow HillIsland, then our twin- engine helicopters will take over.

Like summitting a mountain from base camp, parties will set out from Ultramarine towards the emperor penguin colony. Their adventure begins with an extended helicopter transfer that will reveal a landscape of snow-capped peaks and apartment- building-sized tabular icebergs. The rookery itself is located on the sea ice off the south coast of Snow Hill Island and the landing will be as close to the penguins as possible, yet at a safe distance to avoid disturbing the birds. Upon landing, your party will walk across the ice to the fabled emperor penguin colony. The wind. The ice beneath your feet. Walking next to paths in the snow carved by penguins that came before. And then there are the incredible sounds of the penguins in the distance as you march toward one of the rarest wildlife opportunities on the planet: the colony of thousands and thousands of rarely- seen emperor penguins.

The goal of the expedition is to get every guest to the remote rookery once. The Expedition Team and special experts will be close by to answer yourquestions and ensure you take in everything there is to see. You’ll observe close up how the emperor penguins behave as a tight-knit community, how they care for their young, and how they body surf across the ice in a way that can only be described as quirky yet efficient. The helicopter expedition in search of the emperor colony might just be the adventure of a lifetime!

And while at base on Ultramarine with your attentive Expedition Team, you’ll be immersed each day in the polar experience of the Weddell Sea. Daily activities will include Zodiac cruising among the icebergs, adventuring and learning while atop the ice, paddle-on- top kayaking, orworking with our team to observe the weather forecasting and ship operations up close.

A particularly enriching component of your voyage will be the bespoke educational programs tailored specifically for this expedition that offer both traditional (lecture format) and hands-on opportunities for learning about this fascinating region. Each day our polar experts, who include penguin scientists, biologists and polar historians, will present on various aspects of emperor penguins and their behaviors, ice formations such as the tabular icebergs which you’ll see from the deck of your ship, and the experiences of polar explorers who braved the Weddell Sea over a century ago. Or you might, on one of these days, decide to take the polar plunge, or test your balance on a stand-up paddleboard. Then again, maybe you’ll enjoy a little pampering.

If so, you can choose from Ultramarine’s excellent onboard amenities, including the spa, sauna and fitness room.

The emperor penguin colony at Snow Hill is the goal of this expedition.

However, if weather or ice conditions prevent us from visiting the colony or shorten the duration of our visit, we may explore some other sites. Your possible landings in Antarctica will take place on the eastern side of the Peninsula, which is an extension of the Transantarctic Mountains and is the most northern stretch of Antarctic land.

Days 11-13: Cruising

Day 14: disembark in ushuaia and fly to buenos aires.

Emperor penguin in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica.

The remote eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula is one of the white continent’s hidden gems. A deeply incised, 2,000-kilometre wide bay takes its name from British sailor, James Weddell. Famed for its huge ice shelves and flat-topped icebergs, the Weddell Sea is the site of an upwelling of cold water from the ocean depths that provides food for any creature hardy enough to withstand the intense cold.

Once at the Weddell Sea, your vessel will be positioned to enable ship-to-shore helicopter transfers to Snow Hill Island, home of an emperor penguin colony.  The landing point of the helicopters will be carefully chosen to ensure that the emperors are not disturbed or stressed by helicopter noise, and then you will walk around 45 minutes to the colony, culminating in a memorable rendezvous with these magnificent penguins.

Before making your way back through the Drake Passage to Ushuaia, you pay a visit to Deception Island, with its distinctive horse-shoe shape and large flooded caldera.

A typical Emperor Penguins itinerary is shown below, on board Ortelius . There is a slightly longer itinerary on board the Ultramarine , which is 14 days in duration and includes additional time to reach Snow Hill Island and see the remote emperor penguin colony. Please contact us for details.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 : embark ushuaia & set sail through the beagle channel, days 2-3 : cross the drake passage & antarctic convergence.

Over the next two days you will sail across the Drake Passage. When you cross the Antarctic Convergence, you arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone - in this area you may see wandering albatrosses, grey headed albatrosses, black- browed albatrosses, light- mantled sooty albatrosses, Cape pigeons, southern fulmars, Wilson’s storm petrels, blue petrels and Antarctic petrels.

Day 4 : Weddell Sea

Today should see you sailing into the Weddell Sea where you will see the huge tabular icebergs on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Subject to local conditions, the plan is to land on the Antarctic Continent at Brown Bluff.

Days 5-6 : Weddell Sea: emperor penguins

The use of helicopters has a great advantage in the attempt to reach the emperor penguin colony, however as always the itinerary is ruled by weather conditions and ice. If conditions are favourable, you will spend the first two days in the emperor penguin rookery. The landing point of the helicopters will be carefully chosen and we will make sure that the emperors are not disturbed or stressed by helicopter noise. Therefore, after landing, you will continue your expedition on foot, and after around 45 minutes’ walking, you will experience the most memorable rendezvous with the magnificent emperor penguins.

Day 7 : Weddell Sea

If conditions were favourable on both days 5 and 6, and visits to the emperor penguins were successful, today you visit Devil Island, home to a large colony of Adelie penguins and Brown Bluff, possibly the most scenic location in the entire northern tip of the Antarctic Continent, with its sheer canyon walls and volcanic landscape capped with ice. Other possibilities include Esperanza Base, an Argentine research station or Gourdin Island - chinstrap, gentoo, and Adélie penguins love this island!

If you did not reach the colony on one or two of the previous days, then an attempt will be made again today to do ship-to-shore helicopter flights to Snow Island.

Day 8 : Deception Island

In the morning, sail to Deception Island, where the last landing of the voyage will be at Pendulum Cove or Whalers Bay. Deception is a sub-ducted crater, which opens into the sea, creating a natural harbour for the ship. Here you can find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, thousands of Cape pigeons and many Dominican gulls, brown and South Polar skuas and Antarctic terns. Wilson’s storm petrels and black-bellied storm petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay.

Days 9-10 : Sail back across the Drake Passage

On the way north, the ship will again be followed by a great selection of seabirds while crossing the Drake Passage.

Day 11 : Arrive in Ushuaia & disembark

Please note: Helicopters have a great advantage in being able to reach the emperor penguin colony, however their use is ruled by the forces of nature, ice and weather conditions. You will be in one of the world’s most remote areas and there are no guarantees - conditions may change rapidly, having an impact on helicopter operation.

Come and photograph an Emperor Penguin colony with Wild Images!

8th April 2018

In November 2020, Mark Beaman is going to be visiting the Emperor Penguin colony at Gould Bay in the Weddell Sea. Come and join him! You won’t have to pay a penny more than the standard expedition price because he is with you on this truly ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ adventure, so the fun and the tuition/photographic help will be free.

The price per person in 2020 is not yet known, but can reasonably be expected to be around the 2018 price of approximately 48k US Dollars plus a bit of inflation. Yes, it is astoundingly expensive isn’t it, but you get an amazing adventure for this small fortune (actually a pretty large one).

We fly from Punta Arenas in southernmost Chile to the Union Glacier airstrip deep in the heart of the Antarctic Peninsula and spend two nights there, so there is time to explore the awesome landforms in the surrounding area. An onward flight by smaller aircraft takes us to another ice strip at Gould Bay, where we spend four nights close to an Emperor Penguin colony!

You can visit the colony at all times of day (there is no true night), ensuring lots of low light photography, images in snow or whatever. Of course, all those adorable Emperor Penguin chicks will be there, playing around, huddled together or interacting with each other and the adults.

It is going to be awesome!

You head back to Union Glacier for two nights and then take a return flight to Punta Arenas.

As this is Antarctica we are taking about, there needs to be some flexibility, so  you need to arrive in Punta Arenas ahead of the scheduled departure day and have no plans to leave soon after the return flight, in case of weather issues.

(There will be the opportunity to take one of our upcoming Puma photography tours in southern Chile prior to the Antarctic expedition, should you wish to extend your stay.)

This is intended as a one-off opportunity. Come and join us!

What our clients say about us.

Keith Valentine

WB, Antarctica 2022

I have been on other Rockjumper tours so I knew to expect excellent guides and was not disappointed. I was also very impressed with Quark Expeditions they were great. I would also like to add that Sarah Dell made the process prior to the cruise a comfortable experience. She responded to my questions quickly and was very patient in going over things that she had already covered months before

Dušan Brinkhuizen

LE, Antarctica

Dusan was a big hit with most of the people onboard. The obsessed birders appreciated having a bird expert on board who would lead the quest to see everything. I'm certain everyone knew him by the 5th day. He even volunteered to do a presentation on the Galapagos that was very well attended and very professionally done.

Glen Valentine

NL, Antarctica 2022

This long-awaited culmination of the cruise-that-first-failed satisfied everything I had hoped to experience. The Quark staff did a fantastic job (after that first sit-down meal), and the Rockjumper guides were always around and available to point out birds and things of interest. I am so happy to have this one "under-the-belt" so I now feel more free to make other plans. I truly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know all the Rockjumper guides in a more personal and relaxed mode than we seem to have on regular tours. They all continue to amaze me with their knowledge, wide interests, and willingness to share this lore with others.

Daniel Danckwerts

RC, Antarctica 2022

We had the most incredible trip, with perfect attention to every possible detail, and to have the added trip to the Penguin Colony on the Falklands was a cherry on the top. The guides were both attentive, and engaging at all levels with every member of the group, as well as helpful to non Rockjumper guests, which made a great impression on them too. Thank you for an overwhelmingly awesome tour.

CS, Antarctica 2022

Your team was exceptional! So friendly and accommodating! So open to answer questions and share their knowledge. ALWAYS so happy! It was joy being around your team.

Emperor Penguin Quest: Expedition To Snow Hill

  • Embrace the expeditionary spirit on a quest to reach the colony of thousands of pairs of emperor penguins and their chicks.
  • Spend five days in the vicinity of Snow Hill, either on tour to the colony, or immersing yourself in our custom-designed Weddell Sea experiences.
  • Travel aboard the luxurious Ultramarine, enjoying the sauna or one of the ship’s many other onboard amenities.

In 2004, polar history was made when the cruise conducted the first-ever ground visit to the remote emperor penguin colony near Snow Hill Island, Antarctica. Driven by a true expeditionary spirit—and guided by years of polar expertise—the team sailed past masses of dense ice and thick, tabular icebergs in the Weddell Sea to experience the legendary rookery, which now numbers almost 4,000 breeding pairs of emperor penguins. Today, it is one of the most exclusive wildlife viewing experiences on the planet. We invite you—almost two decades after the first milestone visit—to embrace the thrill of the search as we once again set out to visit to the emperor penguins at Snow Hill Island.

Experience a true polar quest aboard the ultra-chic Ultramarine ship, equipped with its two twin-engine helicopters that will fly you to the vicinity of this rarely-visited rookery, whereupon you’ll walk across the thick sea ice to stand within metres of the most coveted penguin species on the planet. Anticipate scenes reminiscent of “March of the Penguins” and BBC’s “Frozen Planet.” Celebrate Snow Hill’s majestic moments, revel in the once-in-a-lifetime wonders of the Weddell Sea, set foot on the seventh continent’s eastern Peninsula, and be part of a legendary story of your very own.

Standard Activities

About the emperor penguin quest: expedition to snow hill, itinerary day to day, arrive in buenos aires, argentina.

Upon arriving in this fascinating city, known for its architecture and rich European heritage, you will independently transfer to your group hotel.

Fly to Ushuaia and Embark

After an early breakfast at the hotel, your group will transfer to the airport and board our private charter flight to Ushuaia, Argentina. Upon arrival, you will be transferred from the airport to a central downtown location to enjoy time on your own to explore quaint Ushuaia—the world’s southernmost city—before making your way to the pier. After a late afternoon embarkation, you will sail along the historic Beagle Channel, which transects the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of South America. Enjoy the air of anticipation as you depart—the next land you see will be the Antarctic!

Crossing the Drake Passage

The unpredictable and exciting Drake Passage, which lies at the confluence of the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Southern oceans, is an adventure unto itself. While being well taken care of by our expert onboard staff and expedition team, you’ll have plenty of time to gaze out at the expansive ocean waters, photograph seabirds as they swoop around the ship, and get to know your Expedition Team and fellow travelers.

Navigating into the Weddell Sea

Onboard presentations by world-respected experts will enrich your polar quest, conveying what it was like a century ago for the brave polar heroes who embraced the unknown. You’ll also learn more about the ice-dwelling emperor penguins.

Weddell Sea and the Quest to Land at Snow Hill

The journey toward Snow Hill Island will put you in explorer mode as the captain and Expedition Leader keep you updated through weather briefings, meteorological and sea ice condition reports. The thickness of ice will determine how close Ultramarine can get to Snow Hill Island, then our twin-engine helicopters will take over.

Like summitting a mountain from base camp, parties will set out from Ultramarine towards the emperor penguin colony. Their adventure begins with an extended helicopter transfer that will reveal a landscape of snow-capped peaks and apartment-building-sized tabular icebergs. And then there are the incredible sounds of the penguins in the distance as you march toward one of the rarest wildlife opportunities on the planet: the colony of thousands and thousands of rarely-seen emperor penguins.

The goal of the expedition is to get every guest to the remote rookery once. The Expedition Team and special experts will be close by to answer your questions and ensure you take in everything there is to see. You’ll observe close up how the emperor penguins behave as a tight-knit community, how they care for their young, and how they body surf across the ice in a way that can only be described as quirky yet efficient. The helicopter expedition in search of the emperor colony might just be the adventure of a lifetime

And while at base on Ultramarine with your attentive Expedition Team, you’ll be immersed each day in the polar experience of the Weddell Sea. Daily activities will include Zodiac cruising among the icebergs, adventuring and learning while atop the ice, paddle-on-top kayaking, or working with our team to observe the weather forecasting and ship operations up close.

However, if weather or ice conditions prevent us from visiting the colony or shorten the duration of our visit, we may explore some of these other sites. Your possible landings in Antarctica will take place on the eastern side of the Peninsula, which is an extension of the Transantarctic Mountains and is the most northern stretch of Antarctic land.

Brown Bluff

An immense cliff of volcanic rock, towers 2,225 feet (678 meters) over rookeries of Adélie and gentoo penguins, some of which will be incubating their eggs.

Devil Island

The Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901-04 discovered the narrow island, which is 1 mile (1.6 km) long and has a low summit at each end.

Three members of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901-04) spent the winter in a hut on the shores of Hope Bay. The hut is located close to the jetty of Esperanza Station, an Argentine research station.

Paulet Island

Located in the northwestern Weddell Sea, Paulet Island is home to a large Adélie penguin rookery. With a volcanic cone that rises 1,158 feet (353 meters), the island reminds you that this was once a very active landscape. In addition to penguins, you may be interested in visiting a historic hut built by members of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901-04. A cross marks the gravesite of crew member Ole Wennersgaard.

Seymour Island

Northeast of Snow Hill Island is a smaller island that was originally mistaken for a cape. Seymour Island is significant for fossil finds and for the remains of the KT Boundary, which marks the transition between the Cretaceous Period (dinosaurs and reptiles) and the Tertiary Period (mammals) of geological times. This era is known for the mass extinction of many forms of life, including dinosaurs.

The journey back across the Drake Passage provides a final opportunity to enjoy the invigorating Southern Ocean air. Spend time on the deck watching for seabirds and scouting for whales, enjoy presentations by your Expedition Team, and celebrate the experiences you’ve shared getting off the beaten track in the remarkable world of Antarctica.

Disembark in Ushuaia and Fly to Buenos Aires

You will arrive in Ushuaia in the morning and disembark after breakfast. Experience a tour of Tierra del Fuego National Park for a taste of Patagonia, after which you’ll transfer to the airport for the return group charter flight to Buenos Aires.

Extra Activities

Paddling excursion, stand-up paddleboarding.

Every sweep of the paddle as your craft glides through the pristine polar waters creates an incredible soundtrack: the jostle of glacial ice, the lapping of waves against the rocky shore, the perpetual drip from your paddle, the call of seabirds, and the occasional splash as wildlife break the surface of the water.

Our Paddle Excursion Program provides sit-on-top, two-person, inflatable kayaks that provide guests with an intimate, water-level experience in unforgettable locations in Antarctica. These stable, rugged and comfortable crafts are an ideal way to see the polar regions from a different perspective. On-ship, you’ll be provided with instruction and equipment including dry suits, personal flotation devices (PFDs), and waterproof gloves. Experienced guides will lead you safely throughout the paddling excursion. Your group will always be escorted by a safety driver in another kayak who will stay close by to provide additional support.

Excursions last a minimum of one hour and are offered to participants once per voyage. Each group includes 10 paddlers, 1 guide and 1 one safety Zodiac driver. The wind, weather and water conditions determine the timing and location of Paddling Excursions.

Is Kayaking Experience Necessary?

The Paddle Excursion was created for guests with little or no paddling experience, or for those who want a single paddle experience to add variety to their expedition. Participants must be fit enough to enter and exit the kayak from the Zodiac, and to maneuver with your paddle.

Provided Gear

  • Inflatable Super Lynx sit-on-top kayak
  • Insulated rubber gloves
  • PFD (personal flotation device)
  • Neoprene booties
  • 10L dry bag
  • Water bottle

Other recommended gear/clothing

  • Thermal base layer (top and bottom)
  • Thin fleece or wool sweater
  • Fleece pants
  • Liner socks

  • Neck warmer
  • Brimmed hat
  • Waterproof and sweatproof sunscreen and lip balm
  • Camera (either waterproof, in exterior waterproof housing, or stored in a dry bag)**
  • Waterproof backpack

Tip: It’s a good idea to protect any camera gear in a dry bag. Small waterproof cameras should be attached to your PFD with a string and carabiner.

Stand-up Paddle boarding, popularly known as SUPing, originated in Hawaii.

SUPing combines the immersive experience of kayaking but in a standing position. Participants, if they prefer, can kneel, sit or even lie down and stare up at the azure Antarctic sky. Because of their wide base and tail fins, SUP boards are quite stable, enabling participants – after a bit of practice – to stop staring at their feet and admire the surrounding scenery. Imagine seeing Gentoo penguins gliding below you, or making eye contact with a Weddell seal lying on a piece of ice as you paddle by.

Guests receive on-ship and on-water instruction from a qualified SUP guide. In addition, a safety driver (in a Zodiac) stays within range to offer assistance.

Duration: 1 to 1½ hours.

Guide to client ratio: 1 SUP guide and 1 Zodiac safety driver for 10 participants

Is SUP Experience Necessary?

Previous experience isn’t necessary but comfortability with water is an asset. SUP’ing adventures are offered in protected bays and channels during calm weather conditions.

  • Neoprene Booties
  • Waterproof gloves
  • PFD – Personal Flotation Device
  • Base and mid-layers (drysuits keep you dry, but not warm)

Majestic emperor penguins in Antarctica's Weddell Sea

Weddell sea emperor penguin voyage: m/v ortelius, antarctica's weddell sea.

This remarkable voyage on board the M/V Ortelius attempts to reach the Emperor penguin colony just south of Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea. This Emperor Penguin colony was discovered only a few years ago. As the Weddell Sea is often clogged with heavy pack-ice we use our strongest ice-class vessel, mv Ortelius to reach this colony. The ship is equipped with helicopters which is a great advantage and can support us in our goal. Other wildlife to be seen include the Adélie Penguin which is the dominant species with a colony of more than 100,000 pairs on volcanic Paulet Island

Expedition Vessel: M/V Ortelius

emperor penguin photo tours

The ice-strengthened vessel Ortelius is an excellent vessel for Polar expedition cruises in the Arctic and Antarctica, providing possibilities to adventure in remote locations such as the Ross Sea and Franz Josef Land. Ortelius was built in Gdynia, Poland in 1989, was named Marina Svetaeva, and served as a special purpose vessel for the Russian Academy of Science. The vessel is now re-flagged and renamed Ortelius. She offers a comfortable hotel standard, with two restaurants, a bar/lecture room and a sauna. Her voyages are primarily developed to offer our passengers a quality exploratory wildlife program, trying to spend as much time ashore as possible. As the number of passengers is limited to approximately 106, flexibility assures maximum wildlife opportunities.

Each landing you make on South Georgia, often referred to as the Galapagos of the Poles, will open your eyes to the wondrous lives of new, enthralling creatures.

One day you may see rookeries with hundreds of thousands of pairs of king penguins waddling on a beach, and the next, you may visit another beach blanketed with hundreds of fur or elephant seals. The grasses, mountains and beaches of South Georgia all play an important role in the breeding and survival of different species on the island. This fragile and interwoven relationship is something your Expedition Team will instill in you during your time here.

Weddell Sea – Emperor Penguin Voyage

Emperor Penguin Colony, Antarctica

11 Days/10 Nights

From $11,750 per person

(Quad. Occupancy, Not Incl. Airfare)

Select November Departures

This itinerary includes a visit to one of nature’s most fascinating spectacles, the Emperor Penguin rookery south of Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea. You will travel from the ship by helicopter to an area near the rookery, and walk for 45 minutes to observe the penguins in their natural state. If the weather cooperates, there will be time to visit Half Moon Island to witness Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins, and for a landing at Pendulum Cove on Deception Island.

Lodging and Meals: This tour includes accommodations for 10 nights (10 nights aboard the Ortelius), and 29 meals (10 breakfasts, 9 lunches, and 10 dinners).

Best Time to Go: November-March.

Destinations: Argentina , Patagonia , and Antarctica .

Interests: Adventure , Expedition Cruising , and Wildlife Viewing .

Places Visited: Ushuaia & Tierra del Fuego , the Weddell Sea , the Antarctic Peninsula , and the South Shetland Islands .

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Note: All itineraries are for guidance only. Programs may vary depending on ice, weather, and wildlife conditions. Landings are subject to site availabilities, permissions, and environmental concerns per IAATO regulations. Official sailing plans and landing slots are scheduled with IAATO prior to the start of the season, but the expedition leader determines the final plan. Flexibility is paramount for expedition cruises. The average cruising speed for this vessel is 10.5 knots. If ice conditions are favorable and the route to Snow Hill Island is free of multi-year pack ice, you have the chance for ship-to-shore helicopter transfers to Snow Hill Island (roughly 45 minutes walking distance from the emperor penguin rookery). If successful, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But please remember that nature writes the final itinerary out here: Attempts to reach Snow Hill Island during the voyages of 2012 – 19 did not always succeed. In 2013 and three years in a row (2017 – 2019) conditions were favorable to land by helicopter on Snow Hill Island and to visit the emperor penguin rookery.

Day 1: End of the World, Start of a Journey.

Your voyage begins where the world drops off: Ushuaia, Argentina, reputed to be the southernmost city on the planet, located on the far southern tip of South America.  Starting in the afternoon, you embark from this small resort town on Tierra del Fuego – nicknamed “The End of the World” – and sail the scenic, mountain-fringed Beagle Channel for the rest of the evening.  Overnight aboard the ship.  (D)

Note: We advise all passengers to plan to arrive in Ushuaia one night before the cruise departure.

Day 2-3: Path of the Polar Explorers.

Over the next two days on the Drake Passage, you catch a taste of life from the perspective of the polar explorers who first braved these regions: cool salt breezes, rolling seas, maybe even a fin whale blasting up sea spray.  After passing the Antarctic Convergence – Antarctica’s natural boundary, formed when northflowing cold waters collide with warmer subantarctic seas – you are in the circum-Antarctic upwelling zone.  Not only does the marine life change, the avian life changes too: A variety of albatrosses and petrels show up, along with Cape pigeons and southern fulmars.  Then, near the South Shetlands Islands, the first icebergs flash into sight.  Overnight aboard the ship.  (B,L,D)

Day 4-7: Entering Antarctica.

You may sail into the Weddell Sea via the Antarctic Sound.  Here huge tabular icebergs herald your arrival to the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula.  During this part of the cruise, the search is on for emperor penguins.  Using both the vessel and helicopters, there’s a good chance you’ll find them.  You might also enjoy scenic flights and – if conditions allow – helicopter landings in locations otherwise out of reach this time of year.  Helicopter flights are a true trip changer, and may include:

Antarctic Sound – The western side of this area is only rarely seen from the air, though the landscape is truly worth the flight: Layered sandstones, lava flows, glaciers and icebergs and pack-ice extend as far as the eye can see.  There are often individual emperor penguins and Adélie penguins on the ice floes, as well as kelp gulls, skuas, and various breeds of petrel.  Jagged mountain peaks stab through the snow, and enormous walls of ice lie shattered on the slopes below.

Duse Bay – A soaring helicopter flight may deposit you on a rocky hillock close to an old refuge hut overlooking the bay.  There is still a lot of snow and ice, but much of the walk on the Antarctic is over frostshattered rock covered with lichen of all shapes and colors.

Seymour Island – Here’s where the Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901 – 4 wintered under harrowing circumstances.  Sedimentary rock, fossils, and great views define this location.

If conditions allow for deeper ventures into the Weddell Sea, Zodiac trips may include:

Devil Island – Home to a large colony of Adélie penguins, this island offers a magnificent view for hikers willing to foot it to the top of the hill.  Melting ice sometimes forms a waterfall dropping from the cliffs close to Cape Well-met.

Brown Bluff – Maybe the most scenic location in the entire northern tip of the Antarctic Continent: sheer canyon walls, fallen boulders, beautiful volcanic creations capped with ice.  A large Adélie penguin rookery lives here, with gentoo penguins and nesting snow petrels also to be found.

Gourdin Island – Chinstrap, gentoo, and Adélie penguins like this place, yet another option for your continuing Antarctic adventure.

Esperanza Base – This Argentine research station may be another landing site.

Overnight aboard the ship.  (B,L,D)

Day 8: Drake via Deception Island.

In the morning, you sail to Deception Island for the last landing of the voyage – at Pendulum Cove or Whalers Bay.  Conditions on the Drake Passage determine the exact time of departure.  Overnight aboard the ship.  (B,L,D)

Day 9-10: Familiar Seas, Familiar Friends.

Your return voyage is far from lonely. While crossing the Drake, you’re again greeted by the vast array of seabirds remembered from the passage south.  But they seem a little more familiar to you now, and you to them.  Overnight aboard the ship.  (B,L,D)

Day 11: There and Back Again.

Every adventure, no matter how grand, must eventually come to an end. It’s now time to disembark in Ushuaia, but with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure lies.  You will be transferred to the airport in Ushuaia for your return flight to your final destination.  (B)

Day 5-6 Alternate Program (if the route to Snow Hill Island is free of multi-year pack ice – a less than 50% probability).

Helicopters provide a great advantage in reaching the emperor penguin colony, but nature rules the itinerary.  If conditions are favorable, you spend the first two days at the penguin rookery.  The helicopter operation takes a full day, and the flight duration approximately 15 minutes.  Each helicopter can accommodate 4-6 passengers per flight.  The landing site is carefully chosen, making sure the emperor penguins are not disturbed.  Upon arrival, you can continue on foot.  fter a walk of about 45 minutes, you encounter the emperor penguins, one of the Antarctic’s prime wildlife attractions.  Keep in mind that you are in the world’s most remote area: There are no guarantees.  Conditions may change rapidly, which can have a profound impact on helicopter operations.  Please understand and respect this.  Safety is the greatest concern, and no compromises can be made.

Day 1: Ushuaia - Embarkation Day

Ushuaia - Embarkation Day

Today was the start of something amazing: an expedition to the Weddell Sea in search of the Emperor Penguin! Snow Hill Island is where the most northerly Emperor Penguin colony exists, and this is where we will be going once we leave the port of Ushuaia.

The 102 guests embarked M/V Ortelius at 1400 with smiling faces and excited hearts. Sara the Expedition Leader started with a safety briefing, followed by a safety drill where everyone donned their giant big life vests and went to the lifeboat station. This was shortly followed by the captain’s cocktail with the Expedition Team, who eagerly handed out sparkling wine and canapés to welcome us all on board.

While we were cruising through the Beagle Channel, Captain Per toasted to a safe and fantastic voyage. It had begun, and we were off! We were all introduced to the Expedition Team. There were nine of them, all from different walks of life, with an array of knowledge and experience on birds, whales, Emperor Penguins, photography, and microorganisms.

That night there was a buffet dinner in the restaurant. There was everything you could possibly want to eat. We joined in the bar and chatted away as the ship slowly moved farther away from land and into the notorious Drake Passage, a 620-mile (820 km) wide body of water with the roughest seas in the world.

Day 2: At Sea towards Antarctica

At Sea towards Antarctica

“Good morning, good morning, good morning.” It’s always a bit of a mystery when Sara wakes us up on the first morning of our journey. Overnight we’ve left the calm waters of the Beagle Channel, and we are out in the Drake Passage. Do we have the Drake Lake or Drake Shake? This morning we had a mild sea, but with sufficient movement of the ship the day before, quite a few of us felt that breakfast wasn’t a very attractive option. The swells were only up to three meters, so seasoned sailors considered it a dawdle, while newly minted Antarctic explorers felt decidedly otherwise. Nevertheless, the show must go on. Up on the bridge, the bird watchers were steadily ticking off new species as the morning wore on: Light-mantled Albatross, Cape Petrel, Southern Fulmar, Blue Petrel, and many more. Starting mid-morning, we started the process of getting everyone ready for the next 10 days.

First, we had the great gumboot giveaway. Everyone was called down to the lecture room to receive their muck boots for the trip. Shortly after that, Martin gave us a well-illustrated talk on the seabirds in the Drake Passage. All the while, the ship was scooting along at about 11 knots towards our goal of the Weddell Sea. During the day, the seas built up over the morning to a little stronger swell. We even had a few high splashes at the bow, soaking the hardy souls down on the ship’s bow with sea spray. But then in the later part of the afternoon, the sea started to calm down a little, so the ship was moving less as the day progressed.

Unfortunately, immediately after lunch we had our roughest part of the day. This happened at the exact same time that we gathered in the lounge for the last of our mandatory briefings, important information on Zodiac and helicopter operations that everyone must hear in order to get on and off the ship safely. It was a huge challenge for some, but those who felt the least well did a remarkable job of trying to finish the briefings. Everyone received their helicopter numbers and Liability release forms. We were now all set for the last of our required activities tomorrow, a dry run of getting into the helicopters and cleaning our equipment for biosecurity. Those things will take up the afternoon tomorrow. With a big sigh of relief, those who needed to their cabins to get horizontal quickly did so. Those who were still able gathered at the bar at 16:00 for a good introduction to photography given by Werner. He gave us all excellent tips on composition and handling of our cameras.

By then the sea was calming slightly, so we had a lovely hour of watching the peaceful sea as we continued motoring southeast towards the South Shetland Islands. As dinner approached, we had our first of our daily recaps. Sara told us about the plan for tomorrow (mostly our dry run with the helicopters and the biosecurity cleaning), a bit about the weather, and our progress. Charlotte then gave us a thorough description of the Drake Passage, and Gary followed up with an explanation of the Antarctic convergence.

Sara finished the recap with a wonderful visual demonstration of just how large those seabirds are that we had been watching all day. It’s so difficult to gauge their size while they are soaring over the featureless sea surface. Even the Cape Petrels, which appear to be quite small when seen from the ship, were just short of a meter in wingspan.

But the most remarkable, of course, was the Wandering Albatross with its huge wingspan. After our lovely dinner, we had free time. Things seemed to be looking up for the passengers who felt sick due to the rough seas. The bar was pretty well attended that evening, so perhaps the worst of the seas were finished for our southward trip.

Day 3: At Sea towards Antarctica

At Sea towards Antarctica

Today marked our second day navigating the waters of the Drake Passage. Unlike the turbulent conditions of a typical Drake, we experienced relatively calm seas with only two-meter waves. We emerged from our slumber to the presence of fin whales encircling the ship. Fin whales are the second-largest species of whales, surpassed only by the blue whale. Following breakfast, Sara presented an educational overview on the diverse penguin species we could encounter during our journeys, exploring their breeding cycles and mating behaviours. Later in the morning, Massimo provided an insightful presentation on the ice in Antarctica, which plays a pivotal role in shaping the region’s unique environment and encompasses about 70% of the world’s fresh water.

Just before lunch, multiple humpback whales made an appearance, many of them gracefully displaying their flukes as they dove into the depths. In the evening, we gathered for our daily recap at the bar, where Sara outlined the plan for tomorrow. Charlotte introduced us to the "Happy Whale" citizen science project, encouraging us to submit our marine mammal pictures, particularly those capturing the distinctive flukes of humpback whales. To conclude the day, Chloe shared insights about the colossal squid, though her recap was interrupted by the thrilling sighting of whales near the ship.

Day 4: Snow Hill Island

Snow Hill Island

The morning started, for many, much earlier than the wake up call. Many of us were keen to see the first morning in Antarctica. The weather was clearly Antarctic early in the morning with strong winds of 60 knots, snow, and poor visibility at times. As Sara announced the start of the day with her lovely wakeup call, the wind started to abate and the planned activities for the day became more possible. After another wonderful breakfast, we were treated to a fascinating lecture from Gary about the Emperor Penguin and his studies of them over the years. This gave us a truly lovely introduction to a bird that we were about to see a lot of.

As Gary was giving his lecture, the first members of the expedition team had flown out to the sea ice around Snow Hill in order to scout the area, confirm the location of the Emperor Penguin colony, and mark a route from the landing site to the colony. Then, group by group, we were called to the ‘departure lounge’ for our flight from Ortelius across sea ice towards the landing site. The flight itself was beautiful. We saw lines of marching or sliding penguins, and in a couple of places we saw holes in the ice surrounded by seals. For some it was the first flight in a helicopter, and what a first flight it was!

After landing, we collected our bags of camera equipment and headed along the poled route to the colony and the Emperor Penguins. On the way, we came across adults who had wandered away from the colony, which gave us our first views of these wonderful, charismatic of birds.

There had been a fresh fall of snow that was, in places, quite deep. This made the going quite hard work, but we all managed. As we got closer, we could hear a cacophony of calls from the huge amount of fluffy grey chicks, which were sometimes being answered by the adults. It made for a wonderful experience, as did the sight of all those gorgeous chicks, some wandering around in groups and others with their parents. The larger chicks were very curious and kept approaching us, meaning we had to keep backing away in order to maintain the proper distances.

We spent as much time at the colony as possible, watching the birds and also some of the chicks being fed. It is amazing to think that the chicks, when fed by the adults, never see what they are eating, since they put their heads inside the mouth of the adult when the food is transferred. When the chicks finally get out to open sea, they have to work out what food is for themselves. We would often see Skuas and Gulls flying over the colony, looking for bits of spilt food. But of course, the Emperors were the main focus. Some of us were lucky enough to see an Adelie Penguin wandering around the colony as well.

When it came time to leave, we could hardly drag ourselves away. But we somehow managed and made the walk back to the helicopter, seeing the last few adult penguins on the way. It was then time to fly back to the ship. Watching Ortelius come into view was a beautiful sight amongst the sea ice and the water’s edge. It was time to warm up and have some food. Some had eaten lunch and some had been out at the colony, but there was food available upon our return, arranged by the wonderful hotel and kitchen staff. Sara rounded up the day and gave us the plans for tomorrow, along with an interesting insight into tourism in Antarctica. It was then time for another fantastic dinner and chance to reflect on what an amazing day we had experienced.

Day 5: Kinnes Cove and Hope Bay

Kinnes Cove and Hope Bay

This morning we woke up with very warm hearts after the incredible day we had yesterday. The plan this morning was supposed to be Hope Bay first, but because of the tides it got switched to Kinnes Cove and Madders Cliffs.

These red rocky cliffs are home to a colony of 20-30,000 breeding pairs of Adelie Penguins. There was a slight bit of snow in the air which only made it feel more atmospheric. We heard a call on the radio from one of the staff ‘Humpback Whale’ in the bay! The Humpback surfaced very close to the Zodiacs, and then it showed us its beautiful huge fluke. It was next spotted on the other side of some brash ice, so we decided to leave the whale alone. We drove back to the Coast and watched some beautiful Adélies as they contemplated which section of the water they wanted to jump into.

We all boarded back onto the ship to warm up and prepare for an afternoon at Hope Bay. This Bay was discovered in 1902 by the Swedish Expedition Nordenskiöld, where their ship was lost and crushed by the ice. Three men overwintered here in a hut they built out of stone. It is also where the Argentinian base Ésperanza’ has been established since 1952. After lunch we all made it to shore. The weather was fantastic, no wind and it didn’t feel cold in the slightest.

The staff made a big poled route for us, so we could have a good leg stretch whilst we admired these funny birds stealing each other’s precious pebbles. Unfortunately, the landing got cut short because the chief of the base didn’t want us at the landing. They were doing research, so we had to leave the landing a little earlier than expected. It was shame, but we came across some beautiful pack ice that made up for it!

It was ice as far as the eye could see, with huge icebergs and penguins running across the pack. Every now and again, there was a clearing of open water with an iceberg or mountain reflecting directly into the water. It was truly breathtaking.

Day 6: Iceberg Landing

Iceberg Landing

Today’s expedition into the Southern Ocean Sea ice promised unparalleled adventure. The morning stared with a captivating lecture from Charlotte about the diverse and unique lives of whales inhabiting the Southern Ocean. Soon after, Sara, our expedition maestro, called us in the bar to reveal a bold plan – we were to land on an iceberg. The excitement reached a crescendo as the team organized us into groups, leading to a breathtaking scenic flight around massive icebergs and expansive sea ice.

Our helicopter pilot skilfully navigated us through the icy landscape before gently landing us on an iceberg, a surreal moment that will be etched into our memories. After the exhilarating flight, we were welcomed back on board the Ortelius with a heartwarming touch – hot chocolate and rum served at the bow. As the day unfolded, the evening’s daily recap provided a comprehensive overview. Sara outlined the plan for the next day, Massimo shared the team’s scanning process to select a safe iceberg, considering its flatness and strength while checking for crevasses. Gary delved into their fascinating dynamics, explaining their shapes.

The day continued to surprise us as Sara interrupted our dinner with an exhilarating announcement – orcas had been spotted in front of the ship. Rushing out, we were greeted with a mesmerizing sight. About 15 orcas gracefully circled around icebergs, creating a majestic spectacle. As we retire for the night, the collective sentiment is one of gratitude and awe. From the enchanting tales of Southern Ocean whales to the surreal experience of landing on an iceberg and the unexpected encounter with orcas. What a truly magnificent day in the heart of the Southern Ocean!

Day 7: Brown Bluff and Gourdin Island

Brown Bluff and Gourdin Island

The day started with another wake up call from Sara. We had moved overnight from the Weddell Sea to the Antarctic Sound and to Brown Bluff. The weather was sunny and calm. The view of the Bluff was spectacular. After breakfast we were taken over to Brown Bluff and the landing site, we were greeted by a large number of Adelie and Gentoo Penguins. The walk around the snow gave us a lovely view of Ortelius and great views of the breeding penguins.

As the tide dropped, we also had the chance to walk along the beach and find a little solitude to contemplate the huge scale of the scenery and the quiet. Later in the morning it was time to return to Ortelius for lunch and to move to our afternoon destination. On arrival at Gourdin Island the wind had increased to 30 knots, and we were warned that our zodiac cruise would be a little bumpy and, as a result, wet from spray. As we waited to board a Humpback whale cruised by right at the stern of the ship!

Nevertheless, we all gathered for our last zodiac cruise of the trip. It was a little wet at times, but the conditions were not too bad at all. We were treated to great views of Chinstrap penguins alongside Adelies and Gentoos. We also had excellent views of Weddell Seals and spectacular Ice. We watched as some of the penguins jumped so high to get out of the water onto the ice. It was quite comical watching as some penguins missed the landing and fell back into the water, fortunately they are hardy souls and would try again and again until they got it right. Upon our safe return to Ortelius it was time to grab a hot drink and before long it was time for recap and the plans for tomorrow and then BBQ! The bridge team were able to find a sheltered spot for our evening outside in the sunshine, eating, chatting, and drinking. The Captain was serving the wine as some of the first few hardy souls hit the dance floor as the glistening snowy mountains loomed upon us.

Day 8: Whalers Bay, Deception Island

Whalers Bay, Deception Island

Well I think there were a few people who started a bit more slowly than usual this morning—and perhaps a couple of sore heads after our lovely BBQ last night. Even the very reasonable 7am wake up call seemed a bit early for many. But it was well worth the effort as Captain Per navigated the narrow Neptune’s Bellows to bring the ship into the flooded caldera of Deception Island. The already narrow passage is made narrower by the fact that there is a rocky shoal with a shipwreck blocking about half of the passage on the western side and this morning it was made even more challenging with a small iceberg in the way.

As we cleared the entrance, we quickly took a hard right turn to enter Whaler’s Bay. We could immediately spot the remains of the old whaling station and some of the additional buildings that were used by the British Antarctic Survey as a research station since WWII. There was even a yacht sitting peacefully at anchor—just where we would have dropped our anchor. We had a beautiful morning ahead of us with the sun shining and very little wind. Even with the fine weather, the whole scene looked a desolate place to think of living and working—especially for something as hard as the whaling industry. Whaler’s Bay has a long history for Antarctica. Deception Island was one of the first places discovered in Antarctica and very soon sealers and whalers were regular visitors to the protected area in the caldera. It wasn’t until 1911 that the full-on whaling station started operations and by 1936 when the selling price for whale oil dropped—and the whales had been hunted out of the immediate area that Whaler’s Bay stopped operation. The whalers were Norwegian, but they worked under permit with the UK who administered the island with a Magistrate living on the island. Early in WWII, the UK started a program called Operation Tabarin where they manned several stations around then Antarctic Peninsula to conduct research and watch for enemy shipping. When the war ended, they continued their presence with research based at the old whaling station.

During the whaling days Sir Hubert Wilkins made history in 1928 with the first ever flight over Antarctica. He took off from a gravel runway at the north end of the bay. The aircraft hangar we visited wasn’t built until 1965 when the UK began a busy program of mapping the peninsula using aerial photographs. They also serviced some of their other stations from the airfield at Deception. That all came to an abrupt halt when in 1967 there was a minor eruption on the island and operations closed for the season. They reopened in 1968-1969 season only to have the station destroyed by the last big eruption on 23rd Feb 1969 with the 4 men there just escaping with their lives.

On shore, everyone had a good stretch of their legs with a large scope for walking the steam-shrouded beach. Many enjoyed the view from Neptune’s Window where several whales were spotted. And the big excitement was a male leopard seal hauled out near the very end of the beach. He certainly drew a crowd, but simply napped through all the attention. Finally, before heading back to the ship, many of us decided to take part in the little bit of craziness and took a dip in the decidedly cold water at Whaler’s Bay.

Leaving the caldera was just as serious a navigation as coming in, but having done it on the way in it just didn’t seem to have the tension of entering. Shortly after getting clear of Neptune’s Bellows we had a wonderful session with humpback and fin whales near the ship. With the forecast (from our recap) of some rougher seas crossing the Drake Passage, everyone started to consider their strategy for finishing the trip. Maybe start packing now? At least take some medication? But during dinner a final bit of excitement for the day. Antarctic Petrels (at least 2) flying around the ship. Our keen birders immediately stopped eating to rush out on deck. For most it was a first look at the species. Success!

Finally, a bit later in the evening we left the shelter of the South Shetland Islands and started north towards Ushuaia. We did feel the ship pitch more, but seemingly not as rough as we feared. Maybe we all have our sea legs now. Tomorrow just might be OK for most of us.

Day 9: At sea towards Ushuaia

At sea towards Ushuaia

Awakening on our second day in the Drake Passage, we found ourselves shrouded in the mist of the fog Drake Passage. The day unfolded with a captivating lecture by Martin, focusing on the renowned ships HMS Terror and Erebus. These stalwart vessels played a pivotal role in the Ross expedition—a scientific exploration of Antarctica led by James Clark Ross from 1839 to 1843. Following Martin's engaging talk, Gary provided a comprehensive overview of seals, enhancing our understanding of the adaptability of these marine mammals to the extreme conditions of the southernmost continent.

Claudio led the afternoon session with an insightful lecture on climate change, delving into the urgent environmental challenges facing Antarctica and emphasizing the importance of addressing and understanding these issues for the region's future. As the day neared its end, we gathered for our final daily recap. Answering a question from the “questions box”’, Sara shared a video of Metallica performing in Antarctica. Chris then offered insights into weather forecasting in this challenging region. To conclude, Chloe provided an intriguing talk about the sole bear found in Antarctica: the water bear!

Day 10: Drake Passage

Drake Passage

We woke this morning not to Sara’s wakeup call but to Felipe and Marco, part of our helicopter team, with their farewell ‘’Good morning’’. The DAP helicopter team are due to leave later today. The weather had improved remarkedly from the fog of yesterday and was now bright and breezy. There were lots of birds this morning to keep the birders happy, including the largest of the Albatross, the Wandering Albatross, and the Southern Royal Albatross. They were joined by a large number of Giant Petrels, Cape Petrels, and some Black browed Albatross giving us the opportunity to see the size difference between the two Albatross species. Chloe gave us a fascinating insight into the world underwater with her lecture on diving in Antarctica, a great opportunity to see what lies beneath the waves.

We were then treated to our first sight of land, Cape Horn! This was followed by Sara and her lecture on marine threats. A very interesting, eye opening, but depressing story of how we are affecting our oceans and the animals that live within. It was the topic of discussion as we enjoyed our last lunch on board. We don’t really want to think about leaving lovely Ortelius…….

After lunch we were all called to the bridge. Captain Per was determined to beat his record for the number of people on the bridge at the same time. We managed 110 people, beating the last record by four people! We were delighted with the views of Cape Horn. We were about three miles off the coast, with great visibility. Gary explained about the monument to the missing seamen, the lighthouse, and the accompanying buildings. He then went on to recite the poem written by Sara Vial that is inscribed on the monument, followed by the ships horn being sounded.

A ballot then took place for some very attractive prizes, the first being the ship’s flag. It was then decided to have a photo taken of everyone on the bow. We gathered in our jackets and coats just in time for the photo to be taken, followed by a hailstorm. It was then time to warm up with a hot drink and watch our transit along the coast of South America. The alternative was to pay our final bills and do the necessary packing of cases and bags in time for our farewell drinks and the showing of the slideshow put together by the expedition team. The slideshow was fantastic, and it made us quite emotional being reminded of the wonderful journey we had all shared together.

We then went to dinner for the final time, a great meal prepared by the wonderful team in the kitchen. A great way to end our final whole day as we entered the Beagle Channel.

Day 11: Disembarkation Day- Ushuaia Port

Disembarkation Day- Ushuaia Port

It’s always sad saying goodbye to the guests we have spent so much heartfelt time with, but the time had come to disembark the ship. At 0830 this morning, after the staff had put all the luggage outside, it was time to say farewell and see you next time. This trip has been incredibly special and one we will remember for a lifetime.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and support, but most of all for joining us on this adventurous Arctic voyage. We hope to see you again in the future, wherever that might be!
