From my home in Detroit, I have been traveling by Indianapolis for over 20 years to visit family in St. Louis, but I have never explored the city until recently. I always knew Indianapolis was a big sports town with the Indianapolis 500, the Pacers, the Colts, and in 2022, the College Football Playoff National Championship. However, until I visited, I didn’t realize that Indy has activities for all types, whether you’re a sports lover, history buff, or nature enthusiast.

Pro Tip: Staying downtown will save you time as most of these attractions are easily walkable.

Whatever you choose while visiting Indianapolis, you can guarantee your family will have a wonderful time. Here are nine fantastic things to do in Indianapolis for the whole family.

Note: Visit Indy hosted my visit, but all opinions expressed are my own.

Reflection pool at White River State Park

1. White River State Park

Bring the whole family to experience culture, art, sports, and nature within White River State Park .

This 250-acre green space in the middle of downtown Indianapolis is the perfect place to start your Indy adventure, with its stunning view of the city skyline, public art, 3 miles of walking trails, and a central canal that runs alongside cultural, educational, and recreational attractions.

I spent almost a full day enjoying the abundant activities within this urban oasis. Besides strolling through the nationally renowned museums, you can rent kayaks and paddle boats to cruise around the canal. Or you can take a ride on a gondola.

White River State Park is the perfect place to relax, get fresh air, walk the trails around the canal, or stay for a late-night concert. It offers countless things to do all in one place.

Pro Tip: During the summer, Old World Gondoliers offer daily rides through the canal at 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. You need to make reservations online to secure your spot.

Eiteljorg Museum in White River State Park in Indianapolis

2. Eiteljorg Museum

Eiteljorg is one of only two museums east of the Mississippi exploring Native American and American Western art. Plan on spending an hour or two wandering through the museum, viewing the exhibits that tell a complex story of Native Americans.

The museum has two floors filled with special short-term exhibits that change periodically throughout the year, as well as permanent collections. Within the Native Art in North America area, you can learn about the culture of three Native American groups in Indiana and their emotional story of how they lost the right to their lands in the past. Today, Native American locals are teaching the younger generation how to persevere and maintain their traditions to pass them down to future generations.

Eiteljorg is more than an art museum filled with photographs, multimedia, and sculptures; it also has hands-on activities for the kids. Children can dress in authentic costumes, hop into a stagecoach, try basket weaving, and build a tipi. The Eiteljorg Museum is a fabulous destination that will have you feeling like you escaped to the West.

Indiana State Museum

3. Indiana State Museum

The Indiana State Museum has three floors of amazing galleries showcasing the story of the Hoosier state. The exhibits are in chronological order, so you can follow the flow of time from the rise and fall of the dinosaurs to the American Revolution, and from Indiana statehood to how American pioneers created the Hoosier identity. There are over 500,000 objects to see and plenty of hands-on activities for children of all ages to enjoy.

I lingered watching the pendulum swing with the earth’s rotation and in the exhibit with photos of Hoosiers and how they are famous. The highlight, though, was the Popular Culture exhibit, which was fun to see how many of the items I had growing up. Who had the Trivia Pursuit board game, Cabbage Patch Kids, an Atari, and a Rubik’s Cube?

Pro Tip: There are ramps and stairs leading from one exhibit to the next, but if you need them, there are elevators available to reach all floors.

Lions laying in the grass at the Indianapolis Zoo

4. Indianapolis Zoo

The Indianapolis Zoo is the first institution to be triple-accredited as a zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden. The zoo is mapped out into five sections — Oceans, Deserts, Plains, Forests, and Encounters — that cover over 64 acres. Your kids will love the encounters where they can watch them train elephants and pet sharks. Plan to spend at least a half-day in order to see all of the 3,800 animals.

As one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, the Indianapolis Zoo contributes globally to conservation research, climate change research, and breeding projects for endangered species. They do a great job teaching visitors how essential conservation efforts are and show you how to help the Earth and the animals that live in it.

Pro Tip: Buy your tickets online and save 50 percent. Pick the Total Adventure Package for animal feedings and unlimited rides, especially on the safari jeep roller coaster, where you can see the biggest group of orangutans in North America high in the sky.

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA downtown cityscape and Monument Circle at dawn.

5. Monument Circle

Monument Circle is where you’ll find the Soldiers & Sailors Monument. This monument commemorates the courage of Hoosier veterans who served in wars before WWI. An observation deck at 274 feet offers a 360-degree view of the city skyline.

The best time to visit Monument Circle is at night to see the spectacular light presentation, Shining A Light. It usually repeats nightly at 9:45, 10:15, and 10:45 p.m. The best viewing area is on the south steps of the monument to see the surrounding buildings lit up. What a great way to wind down a busy day.

Pro Tip: If visiting over the holiday season, the monument is decorated with 2,400 lights, making it one of the largest Christmas trees in the world.

6. Mass Avenue Cultural Arts District

Located just a few blocks northeast of Monument Circle, Mass Avenue is the heart of the city’s arts district. You can go to the theater, browse art galleries, get a quick bite to eat, or plan a full night out. While walking the 5-block area, you will see tons of gorgeous street art, including larger-than-life murals of famous Hoosiers, like Kurt Vonnegut and Mari Evans. You can spend a couple of hours browsing through the boutiques lining the street, which offer unique gifts for family and friends.

Pro Tip: Check out the Ann Dancing sculpture. Seeing the lady dancing in a box is quite a sight — and make sure to check out all four sides, as her shimmy is different.

Refurbished Coca-Cola bottling plant buildings in the Bottleworks District

7. An Evening Out In The Bottleworks District

You’ll find the uniquely reimagined Bottleworks District at the end of Mass Avenue. This cultural district used to be the world’s largest Coca-Cola Bottling Plant during the 1920s–50s and is now filled with bars, restaurants, boutiques, and plenty of other entertainment. This is a great area to end up in after a day of exploring.

If you are hungry, you must visit The Garage Food Hall , where they have plenty of options for the entire family, including burgers, pizza, and ethnic foods. If you encounter bad weather on your trip, check out the Living Room, which has eight movie screens, or Pins Mechanical , which has duckpin bowling and over 40 pinball machines to enjoy.

And be sure to try Modita , an Asian-inspired fusion restaurant offering fresh and unique ingredients for dinner. You will need to make reservations if you walk in from the street, as there is no guarantee that you will get a table as they continually sell out. Modita opens every day at 4 p.m.

Pro Tip: To find the original Coca-Cola spiral staircase, enter the Bottleworks Hotel lobby with all its amazing bronze accents, walk past the billiards table, and then through the shiny bronze doors to see the impressive staircase.

View of the Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience connected to the Indianapolis Children's Museum

8. Children’s Museum Of Indianapolis

The ultimate five-level playground can be found at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis . The museum has enough interactive exhibits for the entire family to be kids for a full day.

Your children’s ages will determine which exhibit you visit first. You can immerse yourself into the world of dinosaurs, discover about a child’s life in different cultures, see the largest water clock, or ride the 1917 Carousel.

But, wait, there’s more! There is a complete sports experience outside for you to enjoy. The complex has 12 mini courts and fields where you can teach kids how to play sports, whether basketball, football, golf, or drag racing.

Pro Tip: Purchase tickets online before your visit, as prices increase as the day gets closer.

9. Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

Did you know there is a museum right in the middle of the famed oval speedway? The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum displays several past winners’ vehicles and the Borg-Warner Trophy. Your family can choose from a variety of guided tours that will take you through Gasoline Alley, a lap around the oval, a stop at the start/finish line, and the basement’s rare vehicle collection. Visiting the Indiana Motor Speedway Museum with your family can bring a whole new generation into the love of racing.

Pro Tip: To park at the museum, enter Gate 2. If an event is going on, parking is across the street, and buses are available to the museum.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Indianapolis

Indianapolis is the capital city of Indiana. The town experiences typical Midwest weather, with the most pleasant temperatures being late spring and early fall. However, the summer months can be an excellent time to visit for a weekend getaway, especially if the plan is to visit indoor museums.

If you choose to visit during March- April or October- November, the weather can vary drastically in a single day. This means that visitors could experience all four seasons in one day. Pack accordingly and dress in layers.

Tip : While visiting during the hot summer months, plan your outdoor activities, such as the Indianapolis Zoo, for the morning before the temperatures rise.

Planning Your Arrival in Indianapolis

A key component of when to start your itinerary is determining when you plan on arriving in Indianapolis. We often hit the road for a two-hour drive from Cincinnati by 8 am or 9 am, arriving at the Children’s Museum when they open.

Children's Museum of Indianapolis

Our first stop is always the  Children’s Museum of Indianapolis . The museum closes at 5 pm, so we try to get a full day to see as much as possible. As the world’s largest children’s museum, there are five levels of exhibits, including an outdoor sports experience.

The museum always has new and exciting exhibits lined up. While there, we got to experience the Barbie You Can Be Anything: The Experience allows guests to explore new careers and hobbies. From piloting an airplane to taking photos as a wildlife photographer, the sky is the limit!

Inside the museum is a cafe that is the perfect stop for a quick lunch before venturing back into the museum.

Where To Stay In Indianapolis

The bottleworks hotel.

Once an old Coke-A-Cola manufacturing building, the  Bottleworks Hotel  has restored its historic charm while offering guests a top-notch luxury experience. The architecture and style of the  Bottleworks  are in a league of their own; add in spacious terrace rooms, marble bathrooms, along with a cozy robe for a dream come true.

Bottleworks Hotel in Indianapolis

This boutique hotel is a treat for the parents. While the hotel does not have a pool, being able to retreat to a terrace after the kids have fallen asleep is priceless. The rooms are enormous, giving families space to spread out. There is a billiard table in the lobby as well for guests to use.

The Blue Collar Coffee Co. is attached to the hotel, serving craft coffee beverages, breakfast sandwiches, and more.

Bottleworks Hotel in Indianapolis

The Bottleworks Hotel is located in the Bottleworks District. This newly developed area is full of restaurants, entertainment, and a food hall called the Garage. The Garage has a variety of dining options available, including an ice cream spot called Lick.

Tip : We know that a hotel with a pool is a priority for many families. If an indoor swimming pool is a must-have, consider staying at the  Crown Plaza Hotel (you can even sleep in a train car), Hyatt Place Downtown  or  Home2Suites Indianapolis Downtown .

Catching one of their dolphin presentations during your visit is a must. It comes included in your ticket, so don’t miss out. After the show, venture underneath the pavilion to see the dolphins in their underwater habitat.

The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center is an exhibit you don’t want to miss! This world-renowned facility is not only home to the largest group of orangutans in any American zoo but is also a hub for cognitive research of great apes. Visitors can watch as scientists and zoologists work with great apes to test their skills.

Another favorite exhibit is the walrus. I have always adored these creatures, which makes seeing them swimming and splashing around so incredible.

Walking along the canal in Indianapolis is an activity that should be added to any Indianapolis itinerary. While we added it as a way to get that last energy burn before a car ride home, the  White River State Park  can easily be added to any itinerary. A morning stroll with coffee, afternoon paddle boating on the canal, or a leisurely evening stroll with ice cream in the evening.

Kid fun in indianapolis: the best list of things to do with kids in indianapolis.

My friend Katy runs Indy with Kids and she helped me sort out the best things to do with kids in Indianapolis.

Now that I’ve experienced a lot of what they have to offer, here’s my take on doing Indianapolis with Kids.

1 – Spend the Day at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

Welcome to the World’s Largest Children’s Museum!

With five floors of fun, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is number one on our list of Things to Do with Kids in Indianapolis.

First-time visitors should plan on spending the whole day exploring the museum.

The museum has done a great job crafting exhibits for various age groups and interests.

Here are just a few examples of what you can explore:

Sports Legends Experience at the Museum

This immersive outdoor/indoor experience opened in March 2018. It offers 12 outdoor sports areas and three indoor exhibits – all in support of getting people moving.

family trip to indianapolis

Amazing doesn’t begin to describe what they have created.

We spent almost all of our 2 ½ hours just exploring and playing in this new section.

The attention to detail blew me away. Even the snack areas are made to look like a vendor at a sports arena.

family trip to indianapolis

There were plenty of employees facilitating each athletic activity, with sports mini-clinic sessions offered throughout the day.

Your kids can kick field goals through full-size uprights, score a soccer goal, pedal cars around a racetrack, shoot a puck through a goaltender’s legs, and beat the buzzer to sink the game-winning shot.

Outdoor experiences are seasonal and weather-dependent.

Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers will love Playscape, where playing in water and sand is encouraged alongside making art and exploring music.

Private nursing areas and family restrooms are located here, too.

Treasures of the Earth

Treasures of the Earth turns your kids into Indiana Jones’s sidekick material.

From a bumpy elevator ride to an archaeological dig, kids are put into the roles of adventurer and archaeologist and given mysteries to solve.

All ages will enjoy putting together the mummy sarcophagus and checking out the working archaeology lab.

More Favorites at the Children’s Museum

Beyond that, the Dinosphere is a must for any dino-lovers out there, and the Take Me There exhibit really does make you feel like you’re on another continent.

All Aboard! has full-size trains you can go in and out of as well as miniature trains, too. Kids can touch and experiment with things everywhere you look. Fantastic.

2 – Explore 100 Acres at Newfields (aka Indianapolis Museum of Art)

Now on to the rest of the things to do with kids in Indianapolis – starting with Newfields (the Indianapolis Museum of Art).

This gorgeous outdoor art sanctuary at Newfields is a complete blessing for families.

100 acres of natural beauty married to art that kids can climb on makes for happy parents any day.

The park is open from dawn to dusk and features walking trails, a visitor’s pavilion with restrooms, and unique sculptures and artwork your kids will want to interact with.

Plan on spending 1-2 hours at this destination or longer if your kids really like to hike.

  • Parking:  Free parking! You can park at the Museum and follow the walking path to the 100 Acres or drive. You’ll need to enter off of 38th Street and park in the 100 Acres lot at 1850 W 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46228. Access to Fairbanks Park from the upper campus is currently closed.
  • Tickets : Starting at $20/adults, $13/youth age 6-17, and free for those 5 and under. Order online in advance or use your phone to purchase tickets on-site. Newfields is currently a cashless campus.

3 – Make Noise at Rhythm Discovery Center

After a burst pipe in December 2022, the Rhythm Discovery Center is temporarily closed while they find a new location.

Tucked away in downtown Indianapolis, near Center Circle Mall, is Rhythm Discovery Center.

Interactive is not a strong enough word for this percussion museum.

Kids are encouraged to put their hands on a huge variety of professional instruments from around the world and through the ages. Little do they know they are learning as they pound out a beat or play in a drum circle.

Kid Fun in Indianapolis - Rhythm Discovery Center

If your kids are musically inclined, they will take to this place instantly. If they like to knock sticks together or tap their feet, or if they like to make a lot of noise, they’ll like this place, too.

I was astonished at the wide variety of percussion instruments and all of the things kids were allowed to do – and all for a great price. Plan on spending 1-2 hours at this location.

4 – Hunt for Iconic Indy Signs and Downtown Adventures

Various spots around Indy have signs begging you to become the “I” in Indy.

Such great kid fun in Indianapolis – and adult fun, too. A perfect way to capture your Indy memories!

5 – Discover a New Game at Action & Atomic Duckpin Bowling

Bowling is fun any time of year at a regular bowling alley, but retro bowling in Indianapolis is even more fun.

Historic Fountain Square , part of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail , is home to Action & Atomic Duckpin Bowling. Duckpin bowling is a bowling variety that uses smaller balls and pins.

The game originated in Baltimore and eventually spread along the east coast. Fountain Square is the only authentic duckpin bowling alley in the Midwest and has been restored to look just like a 1930’s era duckpin bowling alley.

things to do with kids in indianapolis - Atomic Duckpin Bowling

Because there are only eight lanes available, reservations are highly recommended. Lanes book by the hour. We had four people on our lane and it took us one hour to play one game. (I’m sure the 5-year-old slowed us down, though…)

Action & Atomic Duckpin Bowling Details

  • Parking:  Parking is FREE in Fountain Square. On-street parking is free with a two hour restriction Monday – Friday from 9 AM – 6 PM. NOTE: Do not park in the Family Dollar lot on the north side of their building; you will be towed.
  • Tickets : Open bowling is $40 per hour per lane. Reservations are recommended (call 317-686-6010). Bowling shoes are provided for free.

6 – Learning is Exciting at the Indiana State Museum

Let me set the record straight: The Indiana State Museum is COOL. It is one of the BEST things to do in Indianapolis.

things to do with kids in indianapolis - indiana state museum

It’s not the IMAX theatre that earns it the cool award – although that helps! Rather, it’s the imaginative way the museum draws visitors into topics they’ve seen a hundred times before.

Seriously. How many times is a kid taught about the solar system in school? Studying the planets is something everyone does and has been doing for eons. The topic suffers from “been there, done that” syndrome, and that’s hard to overcome.

Indiana State Museum makes understanding our universe interesting and accessible.

The giant animated globe that morphs from one planet to the next, plotting earthquakes and other features along the way, is just one example.

Kids are in the driver’s seat here, and it’s easy to see why they would want to spend a long time fiddling around with technology.

kid fun in indianapolis - Indiana State Museum for kids

Other topics get the same treatment.

Be sure to budget lots of time for the Foucalt Pendulum.

This simple device proves that the earth is rotating by tipping over carefully placed tiles (they look like dominoes.) The pendulum is reset each day at 8 AM and it is truly mesmerizing to watch the bob swing back and forth.

Many more snippets of time are captured and explored at the Indiana State Museum. Budget time according to your kids’ attention span. Some will spend an hour, some will spend a day. This is a definite YES on our Indianapolis with Kids list.

Indiana State Museum Details

  • Parking:  Parking is available in the attached White River State Park underground parking garage on Washington Street and in nearby garages, or in the White River State Parks’ South Lot. For more information about other parking locations in the area, visit the  Indianapolis Downtown parking site. Parking is $4 per car with the purchase of a ticket to the Indiana State Museum.
  • Tickets : Adults are $20, kids ages 3-17 are $14. Children under 3 are free. (Purchase tickets online to save $1 per ticket.) Grand Rapids Public Museum members, your membership (via the ASTC passport ) gets two adults and dependent children age 18 and under into the Indiana State Museum for free. Excludes special traveling exhibits. IMAX tickets require additional fee.

7 – Watch Dolphins & Orangutans at Indianapolis Zoo

Allow half a day or more for the Indianapolis Zoo – there is a lot to see and do!

Housing orangutans, dolphins, elephants, baby animals and more, this zoo ranks #3 on TripAdvisor’s list of things to do in Indianapolis for a reason.

Make sure you get your free tickets to the dolphin show at the entrance. Since the dolphin shows have open seating, you’ll want to arrive early to get a prime spot.

things to do with kids in indianapolis - Indianapolis Zoo

When you’re done watching the dolphins jump, head below and get a glimpse of them in the underwater viewing area.

Another favorite here is the International Orangutan Center , especially important since orangutans are critically endangered, with only 6,500 left in the wild. The center houses 10 orangutans. The exhibit is huge, with a cathedral ceiling high enough to send my heart aflutter.  This Orangutan Center is considered essential in the preservation of these apes.

As you make your way through the zoo, you’ll encounter many more animals to delight: tigers, polar bears, sea lions, walrus, zebra, rhinoceros, and SO many more.

kid fun in indianapolis - Indianapolis Zoo

There are many opportunities to purchase add-ons for your Indianapolis Zoo experience.

Choose from the 4-D theater, carousel,  Kōmbo coaster, Skyline gondola rides, White River Junction train, the world’s LARGEST shark touch tank, bird and giraffe feedings.

Kid fun in Indianapolis Zoo is everywhere!

If you don’t feel like pulling out your wallet every few minutes, get the zoo’s Explorer Pass. It makes the zoo an “all-inclusive” experience and is worth it if you can afford it.

things to do with kids in indianapolis - Indianapolis Zoo

Adult tickets are between $15-$33 and kids at $12-$29. Why is the Indianapolis Zoo so expensive?

The answer is simple: funding. The Indianapolis Zoo is financed by private money and receives no direct tax support. The zoo operates an endowment to protect its legacy, but it also must charge visitors a higher price than some other zoos to remain operational.

Your higher ticket prices go to help run and support the zoo, as well as help with the zoo’s animal conservation efforts around the world.

White River Gardens is a Bonus Zoo Perk

Entrance to White River Gardens is included with your Indianapolis Zoo admission. This lovely indoor/outdoor space is worth a short visit, especially if you’re looking for a quiet place to unwind.

8 – Travel Back to 1836 at Conner Prairie

How impressed would you be if your gadget-loving tween got excited about history? That’s exactly what happened to me.

I went into Conner Prairie thinking it was just a historical museum. A place where old buildings and artifacts were on display, waiting for me to interpret and make them interesting for my kids.

I was 50% right. Yes, there are a ton of artifacts and old places at Conner Prairie. But the museum signs I expected – they weren’t there.

Instead, there were people in their place acting out what might have appeared on a sign in a different museum.

I found myself drawn in and learning about pioneer life right alongside my kids.

The Prairietown village is set up as if it were 1836. Every character in the town has a role to play and a house to live in or a place to work. The characters all know each other and talk about each other.

family trip to indianapolis

My three kids were captivated by the three women in the doctor’s house.

They sat and chit-chatted with the characters for at least 15 minutes, and would’ve stayed longer if time would have allowed.

This photo below shows the carpenter telling them how to carve a bowl. He also tried to enlist my 11-year old son as an apprentice.

We could’ve visited my son once a year, he’d get a good education, room and board, and learn a trade. Sounds like a good deal to me!

kid fun in indianapolis Conner Prairie Indianapolis

Aspects of Conner Prairie, apart from village life, include a petting farm, a Civil War area, a hot-air balloon, and an indoor hands-on experimental center.

things to do with kids in indianapolis - Conner Prairie Indianapolis

We spent a few hours at Conner Prairie. It would have been longer if the museum didn’t close on us while we were experimenting! This was a great stop for exploring Indianapolis with kids. I’d plan a half-day for this adventure, at least.

Candle-dipping and other pioneer activities are also available. Some have a fee.

9 – Get in Some Easy Fun at Indy Glow Golf & LASER MAZE!

If the weather goes south and you need some indoor things to do in Indianapolis with kids, consider Glow Golf.

kid fun in indianapolis - Indianapolis Kids Glow Golf

This downtown attraction is tucked away on Level 4 in Circle Centre Mall. Although the holes are nothing like what you’d see at an outdoor putt-putt course, the novelty of glow-in-the-dark golf was enough for 90 minutes of fun.

The facility also offers a laser maze challenge where kids are challenged: Kids be nimble, kids be quick.

Escape the doldrums and into the amazing Laser Maze. As your heart races while the clock ticks, let your reflexes and agility lead the way through a luminous web of lasers at every twisting, contorting turn.

10 – White River State Park

Renting a four-wheel surrey bike from Wheel Fun Rentals is the most fun way to explore this area.

Seven family-friendly museums border the park, include the Indianapolis Zoo, Eiteljorg Museum, Indiana State Museum, Victory Field (home of the AAA Indianapolis Indians baseball team), a concert venue, and more.

Kid Friendly Restaurants in Indianapolis

In a city the size of Indianapolis, there are a million places to take your kids out to eat. In fact, this list of places where kids eat free is a stellar resource.

I just have two local food destinations to recommend, however, as my kids chose to dine at Costco one evening (don’t ask!) and Chick-fil-A another.

I insisted that we had to sample local fare at least a few times on our trip and the places we ended up did not disappoint.

Indianapolis is a large city. Driving to and from each attraction on this list can take considerable amounts of time.

If you can swing it, Downtown Indianapolis makes a great hub – many of our adventures were right downtown.

Have you visited Indianapolis with kids? What things to do with kids in Indianapolis did we miss? What tips can you share?

We would LOVE to hear about your experiences and hear about the things to do in Indianapolis with kids that you found!

I live here and this was a huge help. Thank you!

Thank you for this!

Update – Indianapolis museum of art is now called Newfields and they now charge admission for the outdoor section as well. Conner prairie offers some fun events that require tickets ahead of time. I would add Eagle Creek park to this list for hiking and ziplines. We loved our stay at the Drury plaza hotel in Carmel which has an indoor/outdoor pool, hot tub, free breakfast and free evening meal!

' src=

This is not true. The 100 Acres Nature Park is still free.

' src=

Wow, this is a paradise for children! – cool)

I also enjoyed these interesting things during my last journey and we came back with a lot of pleasant memories.

We are getting ready to go to Indianapolis soon — I’ll have the kids while my husband is at a convention. They didn’t relish the idea of a vacation in Indianapolis, but now they are excited! Thanks!!

Currently getting rained out on our Indy trip. Zoo has been cancelled but going to try out your glow golf idea! Thanks for the tip! As a side note, we stayed at the Candlewood, newly renovated, King suite with mini kitchen was great for the kids.

I’d be interested to know where you stayed when you were there. Thanks!

Top Things to Do with Kids in Indianapolis

A top-notch children's museum, a zoo, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and other kid-friendly destinations will keep your family busy during a weekend getaway in Indianapolis.

Amy Lynch is an Indianapolis-based freelancer who loves to write about Midwestern food and travel. A single mom and Indiana University alumni, she enjoys road trips, bourbon, books, live music and breakfast all day.

family trip to indianapolis

White River State Park

Block off an entire day to explore this sprawling 250-acre park and its museums. The Indiana State Museum's exterior offers a Where's Waldo-like hunt for limestone blocks representing the state's 92 counties, and the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center's 3-D You Are There exhibit takes you back to earlier decades with misty projections of historical photographs you can walk through. The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art provides a moving look at Wild West culture. Sports fans will want to shoot some hoops at the NCAA Hall of Champions and take in a game at Victory Field, home to Indianapolis Indians Triple-A baseball. Tired of walking? Rent a pedal boat to cruise the canal for some outstanding photo ops of the downtown skyline.

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis

The world's largest children's museum added even more fun with a $38.5 million sports-theme addition. Kids can play on a mini Colts football field, Indy 500 pedal cars and mini golf courses. Also at the museum: a Power of Children exhibit celebrating the lives of young people who've changed the world, a Dinosaur Dig excavation, a brilliant Chihuly-inspired Fireworks of Glass display, hands-on science experiments galore, a full-size indoor carousel and a Playscape section specifically geared toward babies, toddlers and preschoolers.

Indianapolis Zoo

Pet a shark, race a cheetah (NASCAR driver Tony Stewart narrates the feature), hand-feed a giraffe, and stand just inches away from a majestic Amur tiger at the Indianapolis Zoo . Book ahead for special adventures with sloths, rhinos, aardvarks, elephants and more (including creating art with animals!).

Conner Prairie

This living-history museum is a standard stop for school field trips, but the storytelling keeps the experience fresh for both kids and adults. Homespun costumed interpreters are on hand to immerse guests in 1836 pioneer life at the Prairietown area; you can also check out a Lenape Indian Camp, nature walk and more.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

When in Indy, you must go to the site of the legendary Indianapolis 500 . Check out the 75 or so race cars within the Hall of Fame Museum ; see the faces of past Indy 500 winners on the Borg-Warner trophy; and take a lap around the storied racetrack. When standing on the hallowed "yard of bricks," it's up to you if you want to kiss them like the racing champions do.

Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields

Art museums don't often rank high on most kids' to-do lists, but this one should . Yes, there are several floors of gorgeous galleries and a well-vetted gift shop, but the IMA also gives antsy kids something to do at the refreshed Star Studio , with an art-making station, digital garden and oversized search and find. Afterward, let little ones loose in the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park , where they can play around large-scale sculptures and installations.

Books and Brews

Parents will enjoy craft beer and literary-themed snacks at Books and Brews ; the whole family can browse for second-hand books, and on Sundays, kids eat free with the purchase of an adult entree.

Imax Theater

On the second floor of the Indiana State Museum in White River State Park, this six-story movie screen is the biggest in Indiana. The sound and pictures are so lifelike, they may be a little too intense for some youngsters. But if you're in the mood for a memorable 3-D film experience, this theater is the best in town.

The kids will think it's fun to pull up, park and flash your headlights for carhop service at this classic Hoosier drive-in, but the outdoor picnic area is also a decent place to sit when the weather's nice. Load up on traditional diner fare like burgers, fries, hot dogs and onion rings washed down with a milkshake or a frosty mug of the secret-recipe root beer (the stuff's so popular, you can buy gallons and half-gallons to-go).

Central Canal Central Canal free

In the 1830s, the Indiana state government conceived a plan to build a 296-mile waterway through the state to increase commerce. Though the Central Canal never came to full fruition, sections of the canal were developed. Today, the Canal Walk – a refurbished portion of the Central Canal – is a 3-mile loop that flows by the Indiana State Museum  and  Eiteljorg Museum , among other popular attractions. You can walk alongside the canal or rent of the bikes from the two different Pacers Bikeshare Stations along the canal. If it’s a special occasion, hire a singing gondolier or rent a pedal boat or kayak.

Whatever mode of transport you choose, you'll enjoy a spectacular view of the Indianapolis skyline, not to mention a 17-foot waterfall, some of the city's best contemporary architecture, and the USS Indianapolis Memorial and Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial. Aside from the peaceful atmosphere, travelers also love how clean the area is. Other visitors were delighted when they found the Central Canal by accident on their trip.

Indiana War Memorial Plaza Indiana War Memorial Plaza free

Considered an historic district, the Indiana War Memorial Plaza comprises Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Indiana World War Memorial and Museum, University Park, American Legion Mall, Veteran's Memorial Plaza and USS Indianapolis CA35 Memorial. In all, the historic district offers 25 acres dedicated to the veterans. So, if you're a fan of the National Mall in Washington, D.C ., you'll likely enjoy spending a few hours here. In fact, Indianapolis is second only to D.C. in acreage and number of monuments and memorials dedicated to veterans.

With its 30,000 square-feet, you'll want to spend the majority of your time in the Indiana War Memorial Museum, especially the Shrine Room. Described by recent visitors as "breathtaking" and "peaceful," the Shrine Room is dedicated to fallen soldiers of World War I and features materials hailing from around the globe, which symbolizes the worldwide effort it took to end the war. The main floor showcases the history of Indiana's veterans, from the Battle of Tippecanoe through the present. Among the artifacts on display are the USS Indianapolis gallery, military firearms and uniforms, and an AH-1 Cobra Attack Helicopter.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been around since 1909, and every Memorial Day weekend drivers start their engines for the Indianapolis 500: 200 laps around the famed 2.5-mile oval. This epic track is actually on the National Register of Historic Places. With a host of racing events throughout the year, there's more to see than the Indy 500. Other races include the GMR Grand Prix, Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational and the NASCAR Cup Series.

Also at the complex is the 37,500-square-foot Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Located inside the famous oval track, the museum was established in 1956 to showcase the importance of motorsports. The museum features over 25 cars that have won the Indianapolis 500 along with additional cars (some antique), photographs, racing memorabilia and even fine art depicting racing. The Tony Hulman Theatre shows an 8-minute film about the track. Visitors have the choice to see the complex by purchasing race tickets, visiting only the museum or taking the very popular (and comprehensive) grounds tour.

Located northeast of Indianapolis in the suburb of Fishers, Conner Prairie is a 800-acre property that guides visitors through history with hands-on exhibits and demonstrations. Visitors explore indoor and outdoors areas like the 1836 Prairetown, where costumed interpreters go about life as if it is still 1836, cooking, blacksmithing and pottery making included. The Lenape Indian Camp takes visitors to the earliest period presented at Conner Prairie, 1816. Learn about the Lenape Indians' relationship with settlers as well as the impact of Indiana's statehood on the local economy and environment. The property also includes the William Conner house, the former home of the man who once owned the area. Children will want to see the farm animals at Conner Prairie as well.

Some recent visitors compared Conner Prairie to Williamsburg, Virginia . Others commented that they had remembered more demonstrations on previous visits. Most were impressed by the history they learned while visiting, even if they lived in the Midwest. A recent visitor advised the traffic to Connor Prairie was more than they had anticiapated.

Lucas Oil Stadium Lucas Oil Stadium

Home to the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, Lucas Oil Stadium is a must-see for sports fans, according to recent travelers. With the capacity to hold 67,000 fans and a retractable roof that features unbeatable views of the downtown Indianapolis skyline, visitors consistently describe the stadium (which opened in 2008 and hosted the 2012 Super Bowl) as a "beautiful sports venue." The Colts regular season runs mid-September until mid-January with preseason games starting in the end of August. The official Colts schedule is released in the spring along with ticketing information on its website . If football isn’t your thing, then keep a look out for the stadium's concert lineup.

Recent fans who visited said the stadium was clean and noted that the design is easy to navigate. Sports hounds who caught a game during some warm Indy weather particularly appreciated the retractable roof. Wintertime spectators said the stadium was cold.

Victory Field Victory Field

As the home to the Indianapolis Indians, Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Victory Field offers some the best views of the Indy skyline and can accommodate more than 14,000 visitors. Even if you're not a fan of baseball, you should consider attending a game at Victory Field, especially if you've got kids in tow with its Knot Hole Kids Club and kids programs (best for families seeing a few games).

Recent visitors with kids especially liked that there is ample grass space for children to play and families can spread out blankets to enjoy the game. Reviewers also reported that the crowd and staff are friendly and fun. Victory Field was praised by locals and travelers alike for its cleanliness and affordable prices.

Eagle Creek Park Eagle Creek Park

As the largest park in Indianapolis, Eagle Creek Park's 3,900-acre property never feels crowded to visitors. During the warmer months, Eagle Creek Park offers visitors activities like over 16 miles of hiking trails, a 36-hole golf course, a summertime concert series on Wednesday evenings and even a dog park. For visitors wanting to get out on the water, rent a paddleboard, canoe, kayak, pedal boat or rowboat. Fishing is allowed in Eagle Creek Park (adults must have a valid Indiana fishing license). For those who want to explore the park from its treetops, the Go Ape Treetop Adventures offers a 2 to 3 hour experience combining zip lines, rope ladders, crossings and swings. Winter sports enthusiasts can cross-country ski on ungroomed loops.

Recent visitors did many of the activities, like kayaking, hiking and fishing, and all enjoyed their time in the park. Other visitors said they spotted plenty of wildlife. Most commented the park and its facilities were well-maintained. Another visitor suggested grabbing a park map at the entrance since the park is large.

Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden

The 10,000-square foot Garfield Park Conservatory hearkens back to another era. Inside the art deco structure, visitors can explore a tropical oasis with palm trees, bananas, orchids, vanilla vines, coffee trees, and cacao trees. In addition to the conservatory, a 3-acre sunken garden pulls design features from European formal gardens, including springtime tulip plantings and fountains. If visiting with children, explore Blake's garden (dedicated to a local boy and cancer patient) located next the conservatory. Its garden displays encourage children to explore with their senses. In addition to the gardens, the 122-acre Garfield Park features an outdoor pool and a performing arts center along with playing fields, tennis courts and a playground.

Nearly all recent visitors appreciated the reasonable admission fee to enjoy the Garfield Park Conservatory. Many travelers visited the conservatory in the winter to escape the cold weather and learn about the tropical plants. Other visitors commented on the knowledgeable staff.

Indiana State Capitol Indiana State Capitol

As a centerpiece of downtown Indianapolis, the Indiana State Capitol was constructed in 1888. It is a Renaissance Revival-style building and includes a stained glass dome and highly decorated rotunda. It houses all three branches of the Indiana state government and offers free tours of the building. The 30 to 45-minute guided tour takes visitors through the building, including chambers that aren't in use by officials, and guides discuss the Indiana government along with the architecture of the building.

Most recent visitors commented on the beauty of the rotunda and the nice and knowledgeable staff. Some visitors took the guided tour and raved about it, others choose a self-guided tour and enjoyed discovering the Indiana State Capitol on their own.

Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site

Tour the home of the only U.S. president from Indiana, Benjamin Harrison, who served from 1889 to 1893. Historic house fans will enjoy touring the 10,000 square-foot Italianate home and its original furnishings. History buffs will appreciate the Harrison family artifacts as well as pieces from 21 other U.S. presidents, including political memorabilia like ribbons, medals and awards.

The Harrison family built the home on a double lot off West Delaware Street in 1874 in the Italianate style. The home featured luxuries like running water, a coal furnace and gaslights throughout in the 10,000 square-foot home. Benjamin Harrison and his first wife Caroline oversaw much of the construction of the home. After Harrison’s death, it was home to Harrison’s second wife and child before changing hands several times. It was declared a National Historic Landmark and underwent a restoration. Now, visitors can take guided tours of the home and view an extensive collection of Harrison’s belongings.

Indianapolis Zoo Indianapolis Zoo

Spread across 64 acres and home to more than 1,200 animals from 230 different species and 47,000 plant species, the Indianapolis Zoo is a favorite among families visiting Indy. The zoo is separated into five biomes: Oceans, Deserts, Plains, Forests and Flights of Fancy. Each of these areas have their own animals and plants that represent the biome. Highlights for recent guests were the underwater dolphin viewing dome in Oceans (be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before start time) and the orangutan center. The zoo also offers special zoo experiences (not included in admission) ranging from swimming with dolphins to watching a zoo animal paint a work of art (that you get to take home).

Recent visitors raved about the zoo and noted that it was clean and the guides were friendly. The only downside: visitors felt the special zoo experiences were a little pricey, and not reasonable for families on a budget. Reviewers also cautioned against eating at the zoo, as some felt the menus expensive; other visitors wanted more water bottle filling stations.

15 Free Things To Do In Indianapolis For Families

posted by Charmaine Cortes on January 22, 2023 // last updated on January 26, 2023

You may never have been to Indianapolis in Indiana . Perhaps you have, but it was a long while ago. Things have changed in the city over the past few years. Gardens, parks, and museums now take pride of place in this once-weary-looking state capital. Fortunately for visitors, many of these new attractions offer free admission to those who come calling.

Downtown Indianapolis is entirely transformed. The World-class facilities like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500, and the Indianapolis Colts Lucas Oil Stadium have received a breath of life. Those in charge have built affordability into their plans. As a result, every way you turn, there are free things to do in Indianapolis for families.

Let’s take some time to look at some of the free options for families on a tight budget in Hoosier state’s capital city.

Indianapolis Cultural Trail

White river state park, indianapolis city market, children’s museum of indianapolis, monument circle, indiana war memorial museum, american legion mall, concerts on the canal, indianapolis artsgarden, highland park, crown hill cemetery, indiana state capitol, sunrise yoga on the canal, antique fan museum.

family trip to indianapolis

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail incorporates 8 miles of connecting pathways perfect for walking, running, or biking. At the cost of $63 million, the Cultural Trail in downtown Indianapolis connects the city’s cultural districts.

If you’re fit and healthy, you’ll find this an economical alternative to public transport for exploring Indianapolis. It allows you to peruse the works of public art that line the way, initiated by the city at the cost of $26 million.

Another alternative is to take a slow walk down the 3-mile-long Canal Walk in downtown Indianapolis. These paved walkways are on either side of the Central Canal in White River State Park. This affords you the chance to feel the great outdoors and take in the fresh air. Venetian-like gondolas and pedal boats line the White River. A peaceful and relaxed ambiance within the urban environment exists.

The 250 scenic acres of White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis offer many top-level destinations. There are phenomenal attractions all year round. Visitors can expect memorable and unique experiences in an environment mixing waterways, trees, greenspaces, and trails with contemporary attractions of all types.

There are some engaging recreational, cultural, and educational activities within White River State Park. These include the Indianapolis Zoo, the TCU Amphitheater, and the Indianapolis Museum. When you add an IMAX Theater, the NCAA Hall of Champions, and the Eiteljorg Museum, you’re not short of activities for the entire family, although some of these do cost money.

We’re not done yet. Victory Field, home of Indian baseball, and the Central Canal mentioned earlier are within the park’s confines. Several free and paid events take place monthly, with a host of free summer concerts by local artists. You’re in for a real treat as a visitor to Indianapolis.

Artspark forms part of the Indianapolis Art Center and is one of the many free things to do in Indianapolis. This outdoor creative gallery covers 9.5 acres. There’s vast ground to cover, looking at the incredibly unique art pieces Artspark incorporates.

Your youngsters will be confounded by some, fascinated by others, and amused by a few art pieces too. The great thing is that there’ll be a reaction, meaning they’ll be gaining something from looking. This is part of what the Indianapolis Art Center is trying to achieve.

Sculptures litter the landscape. You’ll have time to study certain pieces while your kids expend energy trying to cover the whole park. Your entire family is likely to find stimulation in something on display. You’ll leave with a greater appreciation for outdoor art and the beauty of its surrounding natural environment. Don’t forget your camera.

family trip to indianapolis

Perhaps the Indianapolis City Market isn’t really a free attraction. You’re not going to spend money for entry into the market itself. It’s free admission, but once you’re inside, you’ll be tempted by the selection of eateries and local artisan stalls. In all, there are more than 30 stalls, making Indianapolis City Market one of the top urban markets in the city.

The Indianapolis City Market is listed on a National Register of Historic Places and was first opened in 1886. If you want to pay the tour price, you can take a guided tour deep into the Roman-style catacombs beneath Whistler Plaza, which forms part of the market. We know you’re not going to Indianapolis City Market to spend money, though, so enjoy the experience!

Produce vendors and local farmers gather for the Original Farmer’s Market at the Indianapolis City Market. It’s a weekly Wednesday occurrence from May to October. The gathering is a sight to behold. All local farmers and produce vendors display cheese, meat, baked goods, spices, and herbs for visitors to buy.

If you choose to spend some money, you will reward yourself with healthy, organic, and fresh food while supporting local farmers. The Original Farmer’s Market opens at 10 am and closes at 1.30 pm. Parents, expect pestering from your kids, so if you’re planning to attend, take some extra cash. If you don’t want to, postpone your trip to another day of the week!

Many past and present visitors regard the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis as one of North America’s top children’s museums. It’s undisputedly the largest one in the world, offering free fun to kids of all ages (on certain days of the year).

Children under two never pay, and families get free admission on holidays, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Christmas Eve. There’s a $6 discount offered on the first Thursday of every month, with free parking and a permanent fixture.

The latest exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is SCOOBY-DOO!™ Mansion Mayhem. Children enter the mansion and immerse themselves in the world of the lovable canine cartoon character.

The NEW Dinosphere® is a new and improved version of the 2004 exhibit and is wowing a brand new generation of kids every day. Take advantage of the included holidays at the children’s museum. Give your kids one of the free things to do in Indianapolis that they’ll never forget!

family trip to indianapolis

There are many great free things to do in the Indianapolis center around Monument Circle. The Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument towers over Monument Circle. It is a memorial to the Hoosiers who served and lost their lives in a procession of wars. The 284.5-foot monument is only 15 feet the junior of the Statue of Liberty in height.

The monument’s observation deck provides views of Indianapolis from 275 feet above the ground. It’s not an easy task getting to the deck, as you’ll have to negotiate all 331 steps before arriving at your destination. It’s quite a challenge, but there is a solution for young children and those with lesser stamina levels – an elevator takes you almost to the top for $2.

All veterans ride for free, as a dedication to their service and those Hoosiers that fought in following wars, in honor of whom the monument stands:-

  • Revolutionary War
  • War of 1812
  • Mexican War
  • Frontier Wars
  • Spanish-American War

Choose one of the other free things to do in Indianapolis with your family on public holidays because The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is closed on all state and national holidays besides Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Besides the holidays, you can gain access all year round, where the sheer height of the experience will leave every family member wide-eyed.

Also at Monument Circle, you’ll find the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum. It stands on the lowest level of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. You’ll receive much free insight into the Civil War’s effect on the Indiana population from this museum.

Finally, every night at the circle, Shining a Light takes place. Shining a Light originated in 2019 as a tribute to United States war veterans. It’s a nightly light show that only lasts for five minutes, but sees people flocking to the location to watch it happen.

The Monument, the circle, and many other buildings nearby light up to music by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Videos and photos are projected onto the walls to honor those servicemen lost in battle. Although it’s over quickly, it creates a poignant, lasting memory. It’s one of the free things you can truly savor.

family trip to indianapolis

Seeing as we’re on the subject of war, let’s look at another of the war-related free things to do in Indianapolis. Bring your teenage boys with you to the Indiana War Memorial Museum on any day, Wednesday to Sunday. They’ll see exhibits showcasing Indiana’s military history.

The displays go back as far as the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe. President Benjamin Harrison of the Indiana Territory led his troops in battle against the American-Indian forces of “The Prophet” Tenskwatawa.

Different artifacts include an AH-1 Cobra helicopter and an ensemble of military uniforms and weapons. There are also over 400 military flags and a replica of the Liberty Bell.

The gallery of the USS Indianapolis also stands in the Indiana War Memorial Museum. A Japanese submarine sank the USS Indianapolis shortly after it had delivered some parts used in the Atomic bombs dropped on Japan. The Indiana War Museum is one of the country’s important historic sites, and any history student will find a visit valuable.

Let’s move on to some lighter (and free) entertainment. Fancy a free movie or two? Pack your lawn chairs and blankets and head out for a fantastic Thursday outdoor experience. There are free movies on the lawns outside the American Legion Mall! The films show outside to enhance the experience. Who doesn’t enjoy watching some great motion pictures under the stars?

If you’re feeling peckish, there are food trucks on site that will fix your cravings and fill your tummy while watching. With the right snacks and drinks on hand, the experience will be even more fulfilling!

The American Legion isn’t the only place to find top-class free outdoor entertainment in Indianapolis. Several of the city’s public parks host visual art exhibits and free concerts featuring regional and local artists. Check your local listings to see where and when these are taking place. A number of the sites will feature on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

The Kruse Family Stardust Terrace hosts Concerts on the Canal at the Indiana History Center. The free event takes place every Thursday evening during June and July. So do you do the free films at American Legion or the free Concert on the Canal? We’ll leave that to you to decide!

This series of summer concerts are a well-supported set of events on the Indianapolis calendar. Live music from a host of local and regional rock and pop acts of the caliber of My Yellow Rickshaw and Cool City Band encourages fantastic turnouts. Attendees can bring their food and soft drinks, but alcohol should be bought on-site.

You can find free seating on the grass but would need to reserve table seats at a cost. If you’re worried about rain, the organizers have got that covered. If the weather turns nasty, the Frank and Katrina Basile Theater, found on the campus of the History Center, takes over to host the event.

The Indianapolis Arts Garden is a dome-like glass enclosure making up part of the Circle Centre Mall. It’s a prolific venue for free events in Indianapolis, playing host to over 250 activities. These include festivals and fairs, and live music performances. The activities also include lectures, visual art exhibits, dance shows, storytelling, and films.

You’ll find the Cultural Concierge at the Indianapolis Artsgarden too. The Concierge is a hub where you can obtain pretty much any information about Indianapolis art and culture. You’ll get travel guides, ticket info, directions, and free maps to multiple artsy events and activities in the city.

The Indianapolis Artsgarden is seven stories high, suspended almost 20 feet above Washington st. and Illinois st. intersection. Even when there’s no performance, it’s a great place to sit and watch the bustling city and the Washington street traffic from above.

The Indianapolis Artsgarden serves an essential purpose in the city and is always will be one of the best free things to do in Indianapolis.

Highland Park lives up to its name as the second most elevated place in Indianapolis. It’s the perfect community park to bring your youngsters and fur babies to run around being kids, and well, fur babies! The park is just over four acres. It means there’s an expansive place for activity and provides enough privacy for an enjoyable family picnic.

Its elevated position overlooking the Holy Cross neighborhood makes the park popular for flying kites. If you haven’t yet, take the opportunity to share this incredible bonding experience with your kids.

One of the regal Oak trees in Highland Park is rumored to have been planted by Indiana Governor Noah Noble’s wife in his memory. The governor passed away in 1844, meaning, if the rumors are to be believed, the tree has stood for almost 180 years! Its trunk currently measures nearly 36 inches in diameter. Keep your kites away from that one!

family trip to indianapolis

Crown Hill Cemetery was opened in 1862 and allows you to show your family the resting places of some distinguished Americans. Another reason people come to the cemetery is to marvel at the architecture on display. Crown Hill is massive. At 555 acres, it is suitable for exercise by jogging or walking the paths between the headstones.

You could join a guided tour if you’re interested in finding out which politician or poet is buried where, but it isn’t free. Instead, take some time and walk the grave sites yourself. Even if you don’t get to see all the names, many headstones display love and sentiment towards those buried there. Others remain in immaculate condition after many years in the open.

President Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, is the most notable person buried in the graveyard. Two U.S. Vice-Presidents and the Hoosier Poet James Whitcomb Riley also rest in peace within Crown Hill.

War Hero Colonel Eli Lilly and infamous bank robber John Dillenger, America’s first “Public Enemy #1”, are a further unlikely pair beneath the earth of the cemetery.

family trip to indianapolis

Over 60,000 guests visit the Indiana State Capitol every year. This fact indicates that it is among the most popular free things to do in Indianapolis. This most significant of historic sites is a must-see for budding young politicians and appreciators of fine architecture alike. With its Renaissance Revival Style infrastructure, it stands out among classic state buildings.

The Capitol is a historical landmark site in Indianapolis, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Two free guided tours are available:-

  • The School Tour caters to groups of up to 100 guests. It covers the building’s history and that of the state. The tour also gives architectural insights into the structure and how the state government operates. It visits a chamber, courtroom, and executive office of various government departments. The tour lasts between an hour and 90 minutes.
  • The Statehouse Tour takes you through some chambers and offices of three government branches. The guide discusses these branches during this comprehensive 30 to 45-minute tour. They’ll also provide insight into the building’s architecture and history.

We suggest you take your family on the guided Statehouse Tour. It will provide more than enough relevant information and won’t take up your whole day. After all, there’s so much to do in Indianapolis for free, isn’t there?

Sunrise Yoga on the Canal is an organized early-morning Yoga experience that takes place every Wednesday morning. You’re invited to bring a mat and some workout clothes and experience a way to begin your day in a fresh, mindful, and calm manner. It’s best to sign up online, so the event organizers have an idea of numbers.

Rope your whole family in and make it an experience you share together. When dawn breaks in front of the flowing waters of the Canal’s northern end, even a grumpy child will experience how uplifting and peaceful Yoga is. There’s no cost involved, which makes Sunrise Yoga on the Canal the most uplifting of free things to do in Indianapolis.

We’ll end our list of free things to do in Indianapolis with this original offering. The Antique Fan Museum in Zionsville offers free admission to the public. The museum is home to over 2,000 historic and antique fan models. It relocated from Wichita to Indianapolis in 2009 after a 12-year stint in Kansas.

The museum’s new home is Fanimation in Bennett Technology Park. It houses collections of fans, including water, steam, battery, and electric-powered fans. Also on display is a collection of handheld fans going back as far as the 1880s. The public can visit the museum during working hours on Monday to Friday, parking next door in the Technology Park.

Your family may or may not become fans of fans after visiting the Antique Fan Museum, but we’re sure you’re all fans of Indianapolis!

Is the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park free to enter?

The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, known to locals as 100 Acres, is a free park on the Newfields campus riverfront. It encourages the enjoyment of art while appreciating the surrounding nature. You’ll find contemporary art pieces along the trails. All trails lead through forests and the most extensive pollinator meadow in Indianapolis.

Are children welcome at the Indianapolis Artsgarden?

Not only are children welcome at the Indianapolis Artsgarden, but there are often events and activities planned with them in mind. It’s the perfect place to bring your family and watch a performance or look through the displays. The Artsgarden is also available to rent for birthday parties, weddings, and private events.

Payton at the canal - Indianapolis Attractions for Families - Endless Family Travels

Indiana is the 24th state we have visited, and Indianapolis was the last stop on our Fall Foliage road trip. We spent 2 full-filled days in the city. We are always looking to find fun and engaging activities for Payton, as part of our homeschooling endeavours. And Indianapolis if full of great things to do with kids. We put together this Itinerary of Indianapolis attractions for families to help vacationers to the area maximise their time, and their kids’ enjoyment!

Disclaimer: We were hosted by Visit Indy on this 2 day adventure. However, as always, all opinions are my own.

Things to do in Indy with kids

Day 1: attractions for families.

(If you’ve only got one day in Indianapolis, follow day 1 of this itinerary)

Indiana State Museum - Indianapolis attractions for families

The Indiana State Museum

White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis

The exhibits

As a homeschooling mom, my favorite part of the Indiana State Museum was the history exhibits. Everything is presented in a timeline fashion as if you are watching history unfold right before your eyes. There are many items included to spark the fascination of any child.

Learn about history at Indiana State Museum

Natural History

Payton was fascinated by the woolly mammoths, mastodons, and the other enormous animals from the past. The exhibits are extremely lifelike, full of interesting information, and many include sounds that bring them to life even more. She enjoyed learning about the ice age and how the weather has been changing for millions and millions of years from warm to cold to warm again. A natural cycle that still continues today.

Payton with a mammoth at the Indiana State Museum

Interactive

Payton really enjoyed the Amazed exhibit that allowed her to be active. She found her way through a maze made entirely of cardboard and tried to solve riddles while jumping and playing. It is nice when museums offer areas for kids to play and be active while learning.

Lunch at the Museum

The museum offers two dining options and we chose the Farmers Market Cafe. The food was delicious and very filling – you won’t go hungry!

Medal of Honor & September 11, 2001 Memorials

As a homeschooling and military family, we always take time to visit memorials and museums as a way to teach Payton of the past and to also pay respect to those who have fought and died for our country. Freedom is not free and we want her to remember that as we travel through not only America, but the world.

After visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York, we find ourselves searching for these memorials in other cities as well. It was a nice surprise to find a Medal of Honor and 9/11 Memorial during our walk from the Museum.

Riverwalk and Street Art

Nearby the Indiana State Museum, you can do the riverwalk along the canal. There is a sidewalk on both sides with the occasional bridge in order to cross over. We took some time to visit with the ducks and I learned the difference between male and female ducks from Payton!

We were pleasantly surprised by all of the beautiful street art that we found underneath each of the bridges. From simple images to complex murals, the colorful art kept us walking in search of more. We could have spent hours walking along the canal.

Indianapolis Downtown

Downtown Indianapolis is built around the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument that stands 284 feet high in the middle of Monument Circle. The monument has become the iconic symbol of Indianapolis. It sits upon a raised foundation surrounded by pools and fountains. It is a tribute to all the soldiers of Indiana and has been the center of the city since 1902. In the basement of the monument you will find the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum.

Families will find much to explore in downtown Indianapolis and make sure you pay a visit to the South Bend Chocolate Factory for your afternoon snack. Payton gives it a BEAR-y big thumbs up!

Dinner options in Indianapolis for families

On the advice of some Indy travel blogging friends ( Adventure is Everywhere & Traveling Tanya ), we chose Buca Di Beppo ( 35 N Illinois St ). We enjoyed bread sticks, pizza, and the desserts were great for families. I think Payton’s eyes were bigger than her stomach on this occasion – but we sure had fun trying to finish it!

Other dinner options in Indianapolis that are great for kids and families are: The Old Spaghetti Factory ( 210 S Meridian St ), BRU Burger Bar ( 410 Massachusetts Ave ), Maxine’s Chicken and Waffles ( 132 N East St ), and Napolese Pizzeria Downtown ( 114 E 49th St )

Day 2: More places to visit in Indianapolis with kids

Children’s museum of indianapolis.

This museum is known as the biggest children’s museum in the world, offering 5 levels of fun and an outdoor area (that we discovered is only open seasonally).

The Sports Legends Experience - Indianapolis attractions for families

The Exhibits and Experiences

Beyond spaceship earth.

Payton has always been fascinated with space, so our experience began with the Beyond Spaceship Earth attraction where we experienced the International Space Station and also watched a show in the Space Object Theater and Planetarium.

Beyond Spaceship Earth - Indianapolis attractions for families

National Geographic Treasures of the Earth

We then made our way to the National Geographic Treasures of the Earth exhibit, where Payton tried her hand at being an archaeologist. She loved the hands on activities in the museum, where kids were allowed to be kids and make discoveries on their own!

Payton being an archeologist at the Children's Museum

The Dinosphere exhibit is located on the Lower Level and Level 1 of the Children’s Museum. Upon entry you are transported back over 65 million years to the land of the dinosaurs. You will hear their thundering footsteps, explore the unusual plants, and watch the weather change around you in the exhibit. You will come face to face with full size dinosaur skeletons, have a chance to dig for dinosaur bones, and touch an authentic T. Rex bone.

There is an actual train in the All Aboard exhibit. This train, designed by Reuben Wells in 1868, was the first train to conquer Indiana’s Madison Hill, the steepest railroad grade in the US. It is now on permanent display inside the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

family trip to indianapolis

There are multiple options for dining at the Children’s Museum. The museum and the outdoor sports experience offer picnic-table seating where you may enjoy any food that you packed and brought with you. If you choose to not bring your own food, there are 2 options available.

The food court

The food court inside the museum offers breakfast and lunch options as well as grab and go snacks. This includes a coffee bar, sweet treats from the bakery, a pizza from the hearth pizza oven, frozen yogurt from the self serve yogurt station, or a hot sandwich. The grill offers made to order burgers and chicken, kids meals, and sides such as fries, onion rings, and cheese sticks. You will also find multiple dessert options including cookies, cupcakes, ice cream, candy, and more.

Sports experience food stations

In the outdoor sports area you will find multiple food stations where you may choose from ball-park eats such as hot dogs, fresh fruit, or Dippin’ Dots. With outdoor seating available there is no reason to leave the action for lunch. Both dining locations offer allergen friendly menu selections as well.

The Power of Children exhibition

The Power of Children : Making a Difference

The one exhibit that made the most impact on Payton was The Power of Children: Making a Difference exhibit. The sound and light shows tell the heroic stories of Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White. The shows run throughout the day. Before leaving Indiana she had already started researching and learning more about these 3 kids that made a difference in the world.

What an awesome exhibit in a children’s museum – empowering children to be brave and courageous; and to help others even when it might not be the popular thing to do. There were also hands on stations in this area that showed kids how they could make a difference in the world everyday, just by being kind and helping others.

Tower of Glass at Children's Museum

The Children’s Museum building

Going up and down the multiple levels in the museum, you can’t help but notice the 43-foot-tall tower of glass in the center. It is an 18,000 pound tower of more than 3,000 pieces of blown glass. It is absolutely fascinating and beautiful, but my favorite view of the tower was from below it.

Underneath the tower of glass at Children's Museum - Indianapolis attractions for families

You could spend 2 days in this museum and not see it all! We gave it our best shot, enjoyed every minute, and came away with new knowledge and understanding. If your kids are over museums and need to let off some steam, there is a play park not far from the Children’s Museum.

Why not include a Scavenger Hunt into your family visit in Indianapolis?

Take a break in a Play Park

Anyone that knows Payton on a personal level knows of her love for a swing. At home she looks forward to time each day on her swing where she can let her imagination run wild with the wind in her hair! Sometimes, when traveling, a public park with a swing can be difficult to find. We were happy to have found one for her just a couple of blocks from the children’s museum.

I can only imagine what was going through her mind as she enjoyed some quiet time after a very busy and interactive day. I especially love this picture where she appears to be standing in mid air on first glance.

Payton on a swing

If you have time: more attractions for families

If you have more time available I would definitely recommend adding in the following attractions:

Indianapolis Zoo

The Indianapolis zoo is located very close to the White River State Park and the Indiana State Museum. It includes the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center, zoo babies, the White River Gardens, an elephant habitat, and so much more. The zoo also offers visitors a chance to feed the animals and enjoy rides and attractions. You can check their daily schedule posted online in order to plan your day.

Rhythm! Discovery Center

Rhythm! Discovery Center is the world’s foremost interactive percussion museum, providing innovative programs; interactive, standards-based educational exhibits, and artist performances. Not only will your kids learn the history of percussion and music, but Groove Space allows adults and kids to live the life of a drummer. This interactive area provides hundreds of percussion instruments from around the world for you to try out for yourself.

Newfields / Indianapolis Museum of Art

Newfields offers experiences with art and nature for guests of all ages. The 152-acre cultural campus is home to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Throughout the campus, guests are invited to interact with art and nature in exciting ways. There is also a working greenhouse and orchard on site in addition to a 100 acre park. This would definitely be a place to grab some fresh air while exploring and learning.

Downtown Indianapolis Things To Do

We are kicking off our list in the urban core – called Mile Square. The area hosts some of the best attractions in Indianapolis!

#1 Climb to the Top of Soldiers and Sailors Monument

Street View of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Indianapolis, Indiana

Climbing to the observation deck of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is a must-do Indianapolis activity. Standing at 285.5 feet in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument honors Hoosiers who fought in America’s earliest wars.

The monument, which was completed in 1902, is a symbol of the city and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, visitors can start by climbing 330 for panoramic views of Indy. Climbing up the stairs is one of the best things to do in Indianapolis for free, but you can also ride an elevator for a small fee.

Pro Tip : The nearby City-County Building also offers a free observation deck for visitors.

#2 Walk the Indianapolis Cultural Trail

Walking the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Indiana

Without a doubt, one of the best things in Indianapolis is walking, jogging or biking the Cultural Trail. The 8-mile paved path weaves through downtown Indy passing some of the best cultural institutions in the city.

Along the route, there are multiple works of art. Visitors intrigued by historic figures should not miss the section called The Glick Peace Walk, which celebrates the lives of profound luminaries.

Pro Tip: One of our favorite spots on the Indianapolis Culture Trail is the bridge on Blackford Street. The views of downtown are picture-perfect!

#3 Feast at the Indianapolis City Market

Must eat at the Indianapolis City Market, Indiana

Foodies, history buffs and architecture fans will all want to put City Market on their Indianapolis to-do list. The City Market dates to 1821 when it opened as a farmers’ market. It relocated to the current building in 1886.

Today, the Indy City Market is a bustling food court with some of the best eateries under one roof. Diners will find a wide range of fare – from southern comfort food to authentic Mexican tamales to Parisian crepes. Just keep in mind, the City Market hours vary and it is currently undergoing a massive makeover.

Pro Tip: One of the unusual Indianapolis points of interest is a nearby plaque honoring Elvis Presley. The King played his last concert at the Indianapolis Market Square Arena (which is no longer standing) in 1977.

#4 Go Underground to the Indianapolis Catacombs

Visitors looking for unique things to do in Indianapolis should consider going underground to the city’s historic catacombs.

The subterranean passageway leads through brick barrel-vaulted arches under the City Market Whistler Plaza. It was used for storing goods for the market upstairs, and many people believe it’s one of the haunted places in Indy.

Top Tip: The catacombs can only be visited by a tour on select Saturdays by Indiana Landmarks . (Unavailable during the market renovation.)

#5 Stand in Awe at the Indiana War Memorial

Looking up at the Indiana War Memorial, Indianapolis

The Indiana World War Memorial is one of the must-see places in Indianapolis. A National Historic Landmark, the magnificent Indiana War Memorial was built to honor military veterans of World War I.

Inside the Indy War Museum – which is free to visit – displays cover US battles from the American Revolutionary War to recent conflicts. Military flags, war bond posters and wartime paraphernalia (including a Cobra helicopter) are on display throughout.

The solemn Shrine Room, displaying a giant US flag and the Star of Destiny, is absolutely not to be missed.

An architectural gem, the Indianapolis Central Library building features an eclectic mix of ancient Greek and modern glass styles. Not only is the exterior intriguing, but there are many interesting Indy things to do inside the library, as well.

Top Tip: Don’t miss the fun Indy Zoo events! In addition to the year-round shows and zookeeper talks, winter visitors can explore the park after dark in the glow of Christmas lights.

#11 Discover the Indianapolis Canal Walk

Strolling along the Indianapolis Canal Walk, Indiana

One of the best outdoor activities in Indianapolis is walking along the historic city canal. The Central Canal in Indianapolis was dug in the early 1800s as a means of moving goods. However, the project fell apart after just 8 miles were completed. In the mid-1800s, the canal was used as a water supply for downtown Indy.

Today, however, the canal is lined by a paved path and the Indy Canal Walk is one of the most popular inner city recreation areas.

Pro Tip: Looking for romantic things to do in Indianapolis? A leisurely stroll along the Indy Canal is a fun and frugal date activity .

#12 Boat the Indy Central Canal

Pro Tip: Fountain Square is one of the 7 Indy neighborhoods designated as Cultural Districts for their outstanding historic value.

#26 Mass Ave

Explore Mass Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana

Massachusetts Avenue – or Mass Ave – is one of the originally planned diagonal streets in downtown Indy. The street was wildly popular when a streetcar ran down it in the early 1900s but fell into disrepute in the 1960s and 70s. In recent years, the district has experienced a phenomenal revival.

Top historic attractions along Mass Ave are the Athenaeum (Das Deutsche Haus), the Old National Centre and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

For a bit of fun in Indianapolis, visitors should check out the district’s numerous theaters, restaurants, art galleries and boutique shops. Those looking for other fun things to do in Indianapolis at night can create a pub crawl down Mass Ave.

Top Tip: Find the NDY sculpture at Massachusetts Ave and Alabama Street and stand as the “I” in Indy for a fun photo op!

#27 Lockerbie Square

James Whitcomb Riley House, Lockerbie Square, Indianapolis, Indiana

The oldest residential neighborhood in Indy, Lockerbie Square is a charming district. Historic cottages and brick homes from the 1800s line the streets.

Scottish immigrants were the first to build homes in the area, but German settlers moved in during the mid-1800s and the neighborhood was dubbed Germantown.

The most famous home in the area is the James Whitcomb Riley House, and is now a museum. The renowned poet – known for Little Orphan Annie and The Raggedy Man – lived in the house in the last years of his life.

Pro Tip: While in the neighborhood, take a break from sightseeing in Indianapolis and pop into the St. Joseph Brewery. The fantastic brewpub operates out of a Catholic church that was built in 1879. Try the Confessional IPA and German Sausage Sampler!

#28 Fletcher Place

Fletcher Place is a historic district that was established in the late 1800s as one of Indy’s more diverse working-class neighborhoods.

True to its roots, the area is one of the best places to go in Indianapolis for ethnic cuisine. Fletcher Place also happens to be home to numerous bars – making it one of the fun things to do at night in Indianapolis.

Fun Fact: The main thoroughfare through Fletcher Place is the diagonal Virginia Avenue. It is often referred to as ‘Indy’s Best Angle.’

Foodie Tip: Mug-n-Bun is an old fashioned drive-in on the west side of Indy that is notorious for making the biggest and best tenderloin.
