 VISAS

New Zealand passport holders do not require a visa to visit Fiji, and you are granted a visitor's permit on arrival, which lasts for up to four months. You can apply when you're in Fiji to extend it to six months, or if you're planning to stay longer, you can apply for long-term visa in New Zealand.

 BEST TIME TO VISIT

July through August and December through January tend to be the busiest periods, as many New Zealand and Australian travellers visit during the school and university holidays, and over the Christmas and New Year breaks. February and March, June, October and November often offer travellers the best bang for their buck.

Summer (November to March) tends to be dominated by warm, wet weather - expect it to rain a lot! The drier season (May to September) is still warm enough for water activities, but the best time may be October and early November, with the weather starting to warm up but the rain and the tourists holding off.

 NEED TO KNOW TIPS

Bula means hello, vinaka means thank you, and you will hear those two all day long. Fiji is one of the friendliest places for tourists.

Machetes are common place, but don't be too worried. They are used frequently by workers, and are unlikely to indicate something sinister.

Sunday is church day. Fiji is highly Christianised, and most people go to church in their best outfits. Most shops are closed or have limited hours. Hinduism is also very popular, and visiting during Diwali or Holi mean you will be treated to fireworks.

 GETTING AROUND

Fiji is spread out over a huge area - more than 1.2 million square kilometres. While many islands look close enough together, travel between them often includes heading back to the largest island, Viti Levu, which acts as something of a central hub for trade and tourism. Pacific Sun, the domestic arm of Fiji Airways, dominates most of the local market. Mostly served by tiny twin engine planes, it is the quickest way to get around, and availability is rarely an issue. The baggage allowance is very small though! Northern Air, Turtle Airways and Fiji Seaplanes also operate a number of flights around Viti Levu and wider Fiji.

Modern passenger catamarans or older ferries, which transport both people and vehicles are very popular options for seeing the larger and more populated islands.

With no rail, hiring a car, or catching the bus or taxis are popular ways to get around the largest islands. If you're planning to get out of the city and see the sights, hiring a taxi between a few people can be an affordable way to do it.

It is time to move forward together. Stronger for the bitter experiences we have shared, wiser for the suffering inflicted on us and more compassionate for having the capacity to forgive. For all its faults and cruelties, Fiji remains a country full of promise and hope simply demonstrated by the goodwill that has endured and the love we have for this land that is our home.

  - Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, Politician and Legal Scholar

 WHAT TO EAT

Seeing Fiji? It's all about the seafood. Try Kokoda, a fish marinated in lemon and other citris juices, and then mixed with chili, coconut, tomatoes and onions.  Or get stuck into some baigan valo, a steamed eggplant stuffed with fresh fish and topped with coconut cream. Otherwise, the classic fish soup, served in a coconut milk broth, is a hearty and simply dish that is easy to find.

Around 40% of Fiji's population can trace their heritage to India, having arrived on mass in the 1800s. As such, Indian-style food is popular here, but a little lighter and more coastal in flavour.

Have a sweet tooth? Ditch the breakfast banana bread, and try a slice of coconut bread for breakfast. Alternatively, Purini is a kind of steamed pudding, often topped with custard or butter.

 WHERE TO GO

With so many islands, you might find it best to visit just a few than trying to attend to them all.

While on the main island, stop in at Nadi and sample some of the our highlights, including the traditional crafts market, the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, and the local curry house, aptly named Curry House. Located just outside the city is the perfectly landspaced Garden of the Sleeping Giant, and are an incredible showcase of Fiji's natural heritage. Between Nadi and Lautoka, the Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Baths are a must-do immersion in Fijian culture. Want to check out an extinct volcano? Mount Tamanivi is Fiji's highest peak, and a popular attraction while in Viti Levu. Neighbouring Vanua Levu's east coast is Taveuni Island, aka Fiji's Garden of Eden. With most of the island protected with National Heritage Park listing, it is thick with rare plant and animal species and stunning waterfalls, including the 60-foot Tavoro Waterall.

 NEXT STOP!

FIJI TRAVEL INSURANCE  FAQs

At TINZ, provided you were acting with reasonable caution we would cover you for any unfortunate accidents or illnesses that force you to seek emergency health care. Read on to find out more.

Q. Am I covered to ride a motorbike or scooter?

Yes, so long as you wear a helmet (regardless of whether you are the driver or riding pillion) and hold a valid license that is recognised in Thailand. If you were to sustain an injury while riding a motorbike or scooter you’d be covered provided you abide by the above.

Q. Am I covered in the event of a terror attack?

Unlike most insurers we don’t exclude terrorism . If you’re caught up in an act of terror, we’ll pay for your flight home, cover your medical costs and in some cases, reimburse you for trip cancellation . See Policy Document for further details.

Q. Am I covered for activities and water sports?

At TINZ we cater to those with a taste for adventure. Many of the activities in Fiji revolve around water sports (it is an island after all!). We cover a wide range of adventure sports such as diving (max depth 30 metres), snorkelling, parasailing and jet skiing and more. Click to see what activities we cover.

Q. Am I covered in the event of a volcanic eruption or other natural disaster?

In the event that you are affected by an unforeseen natural disaster (and have bought a comprehensive policy), you would be covered for travel disruptions, additional accommodation expenses and lost deposits. However, in order to be covered you would need to have purchased a policy before news of the natural disaster hit the mainstream media.

Q. Am I covered for food poisoning, Malaria or Dengue fever?

As Fiji is a developing country there are medical risks you may be at risk of contracting.. However, you can be rest assured that all our policies cover you for unlimited medical benefits if you were to fall ill. This includes access to hospitals, ambulance, doctors and evacuation and repatriation home if required.

Q. How do alcohol and drugs affect my cover?

When it comes to alcohol we understand that for some, there’s no better way to kick off a holiday than with a poolside cocktail (or two). However, please note we may exclude any claims where excessive drugs or alcohol have been involved.

Q. Am I covered for pickpocketing?

Yes- you’re covered for muggings provided of course, you were acting with reasonable care (i.e. did not leave your belongings unattended). If you’re the victim of a pickpocket (even of the cheeky monkey variety), you’d be covered for loss, theft and damage to your luggage and personal effects. If you are robbed it’s important that you get a police report and contact us as soon as possible.

Q. Is my IPad, SLR camera or laptop covered?

Technically speaking, yes. Bear in mind the most we will pay for individual single items is $1,000, and $3,000 for personal computers, video recorders or cameras. If you are taking particularly expensive items on your holiday – make sure they are covered! Even if you’ve purchased our Comprehensive Plus plan (with a benefit amount of $25,000 for luggage and belongings), single limits apply, so you would not be covered for a single item worth $25,000.

Q. What is a dependant?

A dependant refers to your child or grandchild not in full-time employment under the age of 19 and travelling with you on your journey.

Q. What do you mean by ‘family’?

At TINZ we define ‘family’ as your spouse or partner and your dependent children or grandchildren. Your family members would need to be travelling with you at all times and must be named on your Certificate of Insurance.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Travel Insurance For Fiji

With its famous coral diving, white sandy beaches, and over 300 tropical islands, it’s no wonder that 180,000 Kiwis are drawn to Fiji each year! Whether you’re pining for chilled Fiji Gold, or you’re tempted to swim with turtles, Fiji caters for every taste. Can't wait to unwind in the hot springs or take a dip in the mud pools? Fiji has it all. Now we don’t like to think of holidays as risk taking ventures, but the truth is, new environments, unfamiliar territory, foreign languages and unfamiliar foods can throw any traveller for a loop. Don’t get banged up abroad- make sure you  pack travel insurance on your Fiji adventure.

Compare travel insurance for Fiji

Whether you're a budget conscious backpacker, a sucker for the surf, or a worn-out parent seeking some family R&R, it pays to compare travel insurance policies to find the right cover for your trip. A policy will cover you for unexpected accident or illness, lost luggage or theft, unforeseen trip cancellation and much more. When comparing policies, it's important to consider benefits, as well as costs

How much does travel insurance for Fiji cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary a fair bit! Say you’re 30 (ish) years old and you’re going to Fiji for a one-week holiday. Depending on your preferred level of cover, you can expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $100. To give you an idea, we’ve outlined the costs of several policies below; Basic policies: $25 – $40.  If you’re looking for real low cost cover  1Cover’s  Medical Only Cover ( $24.71)  is the cheapest policy on our site. This policy includes unlimited medical and $1 million personal liability only. The excess you must pay towards a claim is $200.   Mid-level policies- $28 – $30.  TINZ’s  standard policy offers decent cover at just  $27.90.  This includes unlimited medical, $10,000 cancellation, $5 million personal liability and $5,000 luggage and personal effects.   Comprehensive policies -$35 (ish) – $80.  1Cover’s  comprehensive policy at   $33.30  offers generous cover with a excess of $200. Their policy includes unlimited medical, unlimited cancellation, $5 million personal liability, $15,000 luggage, $25,000 accidental death, $5,000 hospital cash, $25,000 personal disability, $5,000 for travel documents and $50,000 travel expenses. *All prices accurate at time of writing July 2019.

What will my policy cover?

If your Fiji trip takes a downward turn for any of the following reasons, comprehensive cover will throw you a rope. You can expect cover for:

  • Medical : Food poisoning, drink spiking, Zika Virus, and moped accidents are all scary possibilities. Medical evacuation in Fiji can be extremely costly and private hospitals often require a guarantee of payment before admission. Luckily, your policy will cover the exorbitant expense of overseas medical cover. (Make sure you disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer before travelling).
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits : With its year-round warm tropical climate Fiji is prone to a range of natural disasters including droughts, cyclones, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes. Travel insurance will cover unforeseen cancellations for events such as natural disasters, as well as accidents, hijackings, severe sickness or injury. Incidents that are beyond your control will usually be covered.
  • Luggage and personal effects : Generally speaking, Fiji is quite a safe place for travellers and having your wits about you is all you really need to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip away. That being said, theft is becoming more common, particularly on the mainland in the capital city Suva and Nadi. Your travel insurance will reimburse you for lost, stolen or damaged luggage. Comprehensive cover also includes cover for theft of cash and travel documents too if this is something you’re worried about.
  • Personal liability:   If you injure someone or are held accountable for damaged property in Fiji the consequences could be disastrous, particularly when you are unfamiliar with local laws and regulations. In such an event, your policy will cover your liability costs to a degree.
  • Additional extras:  Each policy varies but look out for top notch extras such as cover for rental vehicle excess, permanent disability, loss of income, cover for kennels and catteries (if you’re delayed home to your fluffy friends) and more.

What will my policy not cover?

  • Riding risky:  Whilst driving is on the same size of the road at NZ,  the road conditions in Fiji are a lot different to ours. There are many pot holes, badly lit roads and livestock crossing or grazing next to the highway. If you decide to hire a car, you wouldn't be covered if you do not have a valid driving licence accepted in Fiji. Top tip! If driving - take it easy and try and do so in day light hours. If you’re going to be riding a scooter or motorbike, keep in mind that your insurer will not cover you if you are found riding without a current New Zealand license (valid in the country you are in). You must be wearing a helmet too!
  • Unattended items : Keep a strong hold over all your belongings as leaving your stuff unsupervised will not be covered for. That also means not leaving your stuff with your fellow holidaymakers.
  • Being intoxicated : Whether your drink of choice is a Fiji Gold or Fiji Rum, all claims related directly to alcohol will not be paid. So have fun in moderation! Also, the possession of even small quantities of "soft drugs" for recreational purposes can result in lengthy jail sentences.
  • Terrorism and travel warnings : At July 2019, the SafeTravel website warns tourists to 'exercise normal safety and security precautions’ in Fiji. Note that however, there have been reports of assault and theft occurring at night in urban areas. The Government advises travellers to avoid poorly lit areas at night, particularly in Suva. It's a good idea to keep up to date with travel advisories on sites like www.safetravel.govt.nz .
  • High risk activities:  Adventure activities are plentiful in Fiji. From scuba diving in Viti Levu, ziplining in the sleeping giants in Nadi, white water rafting in the Upper Navua River or even snorkelling in the crystal-clear island waters... adrenaline junkies are sure spoilt for choice! But watch out, as participating in  particularly risky activities  such as climbing (where ropes are needed), cliff jumping or sky diving may not be covered by your policy.  Be sure to scan your policy’s small print to check out which of your preferred heart pounding activities are covered.
  • Pre-existing conditions :  Medical conditions  that exist before you travel are generally not covered, but it pays to check. You can sometimes pay a bit extra to get some conditions covered. Check your policy wording to see what conditions are covered automatically, and which ones require a medical assessment first.
  • Unreported items:  You need to report theft or loss to the relevant authority ASAP (and your travel insurance provider) within 24 hours.

How to save on travel insurance in Thailand

  • Choose your destination wisely –  You might be able to save yourself a few Fijian Dollars by finding an insurer that classes Fiji in its own price bracket, rather than grouped under Pacific.
  • Consider how often you travel  - If you travel a few times per year, you could save by purchasing an  annual multi-trip policy  rather than purchasing a policy each time you take off.
  • Combine policies  - If travelling with your family or a companion, a  joint policy  is often cheaper than purchasing separately.
  • Increase your excess  - Most insurers allow you to lower your premium by opting to pay higher excess in the instance that you need to make a claim.
  • Shop around  - You'll be amazed at how much travel insurance quotes can vary. Offers by travel agents or airlines usually have commissions added on. In fact, you can save up to 50% by shopping around, so it pays to buy your  travel insurance direct.  Doing your comparison online will allow you to compare loads of quotes in seconds. Yippee

Fiji fast facts

Capital : Suva Currency:  Fijian Dollars Country code:  +679 Languages: Fiji has three languages Fijian, Fiji Hindi and English Culture: Fijian culture has evolved with the introduction of different cultures including indigenous Fijian, Indian, European and Chinese heritage. Fiji’s culture is heavily influence by indigenous traditions and values. Visitors are made to feel welcome into the Fijian way of life through the food, warm encounters, festivals, music and arts. Not to be missed:  If you want to experience the wonders of Fiji the best way is to hop aboard the ferry service and visit the tropical islands. Some of the most popular being the Mamanucas and Yasawa Islands. But if you fancy something of the beaten track there’s another few hundred you could choose from – you’re really spoilt for choice! (333 in total). On the islands there are many activities to participate in like hand line fishing, scuba diving on the amazing coral reefs, or taking a Fijian cooking class to embrace the local delicacies. Nightlife:  Fiji is not renowned for its nightlife, think relaxing beach holiday rather than nights out on the town. That being said if you're looking for the party -  the mainland is the place to go.  If you’re after a big night out head to Nadi, with plenty of bars and night clubs you'll be able to party the night away. Or another option is Suva the Capital. No matter what your taste, there’s something for every type of party animal here, just keep your wits about you. Food & drink : If you like your food fresh and packed with flavour, you’re in luck! Much like its welcoming culture, Fijians cuisine is always warm, inviting and addictive! Their cuisine relies heavily on foods that are available naturally on the island. This results in delicious dishes made from fresh fish and seafood, root vegetables such as taro and cassava, coconuts, citrus fruits and meats including pork, chicken and lamb. Whilst in Fiji trying a Lovo is a must! Arguably one of the best feasts cooked in the earth- think a underground barbeque with smoked meat and vegetables yum!  The national drink of Fiji is Kava, (not Fiji Gold!) made from the pulverised root of a member of the pepper family. The drink is believed to have medicinal qualities and can leave the drinker feeling relaxed. If you want to embrace the Fijian culture this is a good place to start. Tips to safe street food in Fiji;

  • Only eat at the most popular food carts, the turn-over rate is higher and therefore foof won't be left out in the heat all day
  • Only chose meals cooked in front of you and avoid pre-cooked food canteens
  • Stay wary of uncooked dishes such as salads and only drink bottled water
  • Wash unpeeled fruit with bottled water
  • Use good judgement, for instance, steer clear of a stall that looks grimy and unclean.

Beaches:  Sandy shores and turquoise blue waters are not in short supply in Fiji. With over 300 hundred islands to choose from you'll be in your element. After the Hollywood blockbuster Castaway, was shot on Monuriki island, in the Mamanuca Islands tourism to the area shot up. If crowds aren’t your thing you could head to Honeymoon Beach on Turtle Island, Horseshoe Bay, or take the trek to Fiji's western edge and the remote beaches in the Yasawa Islands.. you won't be disappointed.

FIJI TRAVEL INSURANCE  FAQ'S

Am i covered in the event of a natural disaster.

Yes, in the event that your holiday is directly affected by an unforeseen natural disaster you would be covered for cancellation, travel disruptions, additional accommodation expenses and lost deposits, depending on the plan that you purchased. However, in order to be covered you would need to have purchased a policy before news of the natural disaster hits the mainstream media.

Am I covered if I hitchhike in Fiji?

Hitching a ride isn't entirely safe in any country and we don’t recommend it.  However, with Zoom, you are covered for hitchiking provided it is legal for the country through which you are travelling. Standing at the side of the road with your thumb-out would be unexpected behaviour in Fiji.  However hitching a ride on a carrier truck on the main islands is common, particuarly with the locals.  You will often find a carrier driver with a few spare seats drive along the bus route asking if anyone needs a lift.  If you jump onboard, note that he's expecting you to pay the bus fare. The main benefit being that once the van is full, he doesn't make any more stops, so the ride is quicker than the bus. Remember to keep a good handle on your belongings though. Leaving your stuff behind on transport is considered unattended and wouldn't be covered.

Am I covered for dengue fever?

As Fiji is a tropical country, it is a high risk area for mosquito borne illnesses such as Dengue. If you fall ill while on vacation your Zoom travel insurance policy will make sure that you are able to get the medical care you need. You will be covered for Unlimited medical expenses whilst overseas.  This includes access to hospitals, ambulance, doctors and evacuation and even repatriation home if required.

How do alcohol and drugs affect my cover?

When it comes to alcohol we advise you to drink in moderation. Please note that we may exclude any claims where excessive drugs or alcohol have been involved.

Am I covered for adventure activities?

We automatically cover a wide range of adventure sports including diving, bunjee jumping and horse riding and more. You can also buy our Adventure Pack to cover additional adventure sports.

I have high value items; how much can I insure them for?

If you have an expensive item that you just can’t leave behind you can insure it separately for up to $5,000. Please note that high value item cover is only available under our comprehensive plan .

Am I covered for muggings or pick pocketing?

Yes, you’re covered for muggings provided of course, you were acting with reasonable care (i.e. did not leave your belongings unattended). If you’re the victim of a pickpocket or bag snatching, you’d be covered for loss, theft and damage. Muggings are more common at night, particularly in Suva so keep your wits about you.  If you are robbed it’s important that you get a police report and contact us as soon as possible.

What is a dependant?

This means your dependant children or grandchildren under the age of 19 at the date of policy issue who are travelling with you.

Travel Insurance for Fiji: A Complete Guide

Written and researched by Michael Kays (Travel Insurance Expert) | Fact Checked by Danya Kristen (Insurance Agent).

Visiting the South Pacific nation of Fiji is like stepping into a tropical paradise, with its pristine beaches, clear blue waters, vibrant coral reefs, and lush rainforests.

Whether you’re planning to unwind by the beach, partake in adventure sports, or explore the rich Fijian culture, you need to consider travel insurance for Fiji as part of your travel plans .

In this article...

Why Do You Need Travel Insurance for Fiji?

Travel insurance is essential for any international trip, and Fiji is no exception. It offers financial protection against unforeseen circumstances such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost baggage, and more.

Here’s a closer look at why it’s important to get travel insurance when traveling to Fiji:

  • Medical Emergencies: Although Fiji has adequate healthcare facilities, complex medical cases may require evacuation to a country with more advanced medical facilities, like Australia or New Zealand. This can be incredibly costly. Good travel insurance covers medical emergencies and hospitalization, as well as medical evacuation, if needed.
  • Adventure Sports: Fiji offers numerous adventure sports activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, and surfing. Engaging in these activities may increase the risk of injury. Ensure your travel insurance covers adventure sports (learn more about Adventure Sports and Travel Insurance ).
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Whether it’s due to personal reasons or unexpected weather events such as cyclones, sometimes trips get cancelled or cut short. Travel insurance can cover non-refundable expenses related to your trip in such situations.
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage: With travel insurance, you can be reimbursed for personal belongings that are lost, stolen, or damaged during your trip.

Recommended Plans

✅  Atlas America

Up to $2,000,000 of Overall Maximum Coverage, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Medical coverage for eligible expenses related to COVID-19, Trip Interruption & Travel Delay.

✅  Safe Travels Comprehensive

✅  Patriot America Platinum

Up to $8,000,000 limits, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Coinsurance for treatment received in the U.S. (100% within PPO Network), Acute Onset of Pre-Existing Conditions covered.

Understanding Your Travel Insurance Policy

When you’re comparing different travel insurance plans , there are key terms and conditions that you should understand:

  • Coverage Limit: This is the maximum amount the insurance company will pay for a covered loss.
  • Deductible : This is the amount you pay out-of-pocket for a covered loss before the insurance kicks in.
  • Exclusions : These are specific conditions or circumstances for which the insurance policy will not provide benefits .

In addition, ensure you understand the claims process of your insurance provider.

VisitCover provides a detailed guide on how to file a travel insurance claim that can help you navigate this process.

Travel Tips for Fiji

While you’re preparing for your trip to Fiji, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Fiji is located in the tropics, and the country has a risk of cyclones, especially between November and April. Stay updated with the weather forecasts and plan accordingly.
  • As a traveler, be aware of your personal safety. Keep your belongings secure and avoid isolated areas, especially after dark.
  • If you’re planning to engage in adventure sports, ensure that the equipment is safe and the operators are licensed.
  • Carry a basic first-aid kit and any prescription medications you need. Also, protect yourself from mosquito bites to avoid mosquito-borne diseases.

FAQs About Travel Insurance for Fiji

1. Is travel insurance mandatory for Fiji?

While travel insurance is not mandatory for traveling to Fiji, it is highly recommended to protect yourself against unexpected expenses.

2. What should my travel insurance policy cover for a trip to Fiji?

Your travel insurance policy should ideally cover medical emergencies, including evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, lost or stolen baggage, and personal liability. If you’re planning to engage in adventure sports, ensure these are covered as well.

3. How do I make a claim on my travel insurance policy?

The process to make a claim can vary depending on your insurance provider.

Typically, you need to notify your insurer as soon as possible, gather supporting documentation (such as medical reports, police reports, or receipts), complete a claim form, and submit it to your insurer.

Ensure you understand the claims process and the timeline to avoid any surprises later.

4. Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve left for Fiji?

While it is best to buy travel insurance before your trip starts, some insurers allow you to buy travel insurance after you’ve departed. However, there may be waiting periods or conditions, and you may not be covered for incidents that have already occurred.

5. What if I have pre-existing medical conditions?

Disclose all pre-existing conditions to your insurer when buying travel insurance. Coverage for pre-existing conditions varies among insurers. Some may provide coverage if the condition is stable, while others may exclude these from coverage.

Whether you’re traveling to Fiji for its stunning landscapes, adventure sports, or cultural experiences, it is crucial to protect your trip with appropriate travel insurance. It not only provides peace of mind but also financial protection against unforeseen situations.

As with any insurance policy, take the time to understand the coverages, exclusions, and claims process to ensure it meets your specific needs. Bon voyage!

Remember, insurance is a way to safeguard your journey to the idyllic islands of Fiji, allowing you to embrace the adventure and the unexpected with open arms, knowing you’re well protected.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Fiji

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Canstar's Best Value Travel Insurance NZ

Holidays promise carefree relaxation away from work pressures and domestic chores. However, plenty of unforeseen events can ruin the best-laid vacation plans, from illness and accidents to the loss or theft of possessions. If the worst…

What is travel insurance and why do you need it when you travel?

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is financial cover for emergencies, accidents or loss that might occur to you or your belongings while you are travelling either domestically or internationally.

Why do you need travel insurance?

The New Zealand government website SafeTravel recommends travel insurance for anyone taking a trip away from home, especially overseas.

If you don’t have travel insurance and you lose your luggage, have an accident, medical emergency, or legal incident, you could face huge bills.

Cancelled flights and hotel accommodation can leave you out of pocket by thousands of dollars, but medical expenses can be even worse. A health emergency overseas can end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

However, if you have travel insurance, you can travel confidently knowing you can get financial help in an emergency.

What else should you do before you travel?

In addition to organising travel insurance, before you leave:

  • If you are going overseas, visit the SafeTravel website’s Travel Advisories page to ascertain the current risks of travelling to your chosen destination. If a country is flagged with a “Do Not Travel” advisory, be aware that you may not be able to obtain insurance for the trip.
  • Regardless of where you are going, register your plans with SafeTravel. Your details will be stored securely and only used to reach you in an emergency.
  • Ensure you have all the relevant travel documentation to take with you on your trip, and that a trusted friend or relation in NZ has a copy, too.
  • Record the contact details of the New Zealand Embassy in your country of destination – just in case you need it.

Types of travel insurance and what they cover

There are two types of travel insurance cover policies.

1. Domestic travel insurance

Domestic travel insurance policies usually cover you for events such as:

  • Lost or stolen luggage or other items
  • Cancelling your trip unexpectedly due to illness, accident, holiday leave being revoked, or a natural disaster at home or at your intended destination
  • Rental vehicle excess you have to pay if you have an accident driving a hire car
  • Legal liability: the vast majority of policies researched include coverage for legal liability. Don’t take this as an excuse to break the law, though – you may end up invalidating your policy!

Domestic travel insurance usually doesn’t cover you for:

  • Medical cover. However, this is not a big problem because, as long as you’re in New Zealand, you can still access publicly funded health services or your private health insurance , if you have it
  • Certain “hazardous pursuits”. If you’re doing dangerous activities on your holiday, such as skiing, scuba diving, bungee jumping or rock climbing, you need to disclose it on your application. However, even if you disclose it, you still might not be covered for an accident that happens because of that activity, as it may be excluded from the policy. Ensure you read your policy terms and conditions carefully

2. International travel insurance

International travel insurance policies usually cover you for events such as:

  • Medical or dental emergency. Typical emergency medical cover will include hospital admission, emergency care and medical evacuation to another country’s hospital. If your medical situation is not an emergency, it is recommend you contact your insurer before you receive treatment, to check if it’s covered by your policy
  • Repatriation if you fall sick overseas and need to be evacuated back to NZ for treatment. Or if tragedy strikes, repatriation covers the cost of flying your body and belongings back home to NZ. Some travel insurance policies also include a separate sum for funeral expenses
  • Lost or stolen luggage, passport or other items. Replacing luggage and travel documents is the most common claim for travel insurance
  • Legal liability if you break a local law and need a lawyer and/or interpreter. Ignorance of local law is no excuse in most countries, so make sure you check SafeTravel before you depart. For example, in some Muslim countries it is an offence to wear a bikini on a public beach. If you break a law on purpose, your travel insurance policy may not cover your legal fees

International travel insurance usually doesn’t cover you for:

  • High-risk countries. Check the government’s SafeTravel website for the travel advisory status of your destination. Countries flagged with a “Do Not Travel” advisory may not be covered under your policy
  • Risky behavior. Any injury or loss caused by you behaving recklessly while you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be excluded from cover. This doesn’t apply to medication prescribed to you by a doctor and taken as prescribed
  • Pre-existing medical conditions. If you have experienced symptoms of a condition before travelling, even if the condition wasn’t diagnosed, medical expenses for it will generally not be covered. Read your policy’s terms and conditions carefully
  • High-value items. Many policies have a dollar limit that you can claim for each item, which may not be as much as it costs to replace the item
  • Notification period. Your policy may specify that you need to notify your insurer of an accident or event within a specified timeframe, such as 24 hours. It’s important to be aware of that notification period and to call your insurer as soon as you can, in the event of a potential claim
  • Loss of items left unattended. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times. You might not be covered if you leave your wallet and keys wrapped in a towel on the beach, or hidden in a shared room, or even in your checked-in luggage
  • Hazardous pursuits. Dangerous activities such as scuba diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing, off-piste skiing and hang-gliding are usually excluded, but they can often be added to your policy for an extra fee. Also be aware that riding a moped or motorcycle overseas might also not be covered, even if you are legally entitled to ride one in NZ

NB: No travel insurance policy will cover you for every single thing that might go wrong while you’re away, so it’s important to read your policy’s terms and conditions carefully to discover the full extent of your cover.

Travel insurance glossary of terms

  • Accident : An unexpected, unforeseeable, or unusual event that was unintended and caused loss or harm while you are on a trip covered by your policy.
  • Accommodation : Any type of dwelling or lodging that you pay a fee to stay in overnight.
  • Additional expenses : Additional expenses for accommodation and transportation that occur because of events such as illness, natural disasters, loss of travel documents, and transport union strikes.
  • Beneficiary : The person who would receive compensation from your insurance policy if you were to pass away during your travels.
  • Benefits: What your insurance provider gives you according to the terms of your policy. Benefits can apply if you make a claim or they can apply if a certain event happens, e.g. during an emergency.
  • Cancellation or amendment costs : The cost of cancelling, changing, or rearranging your journey because of unforeseen circumstances outside your control such as illness, accidents and extreme weather events.
  • Claim: A request for your insurance provider to pay certain expenses back to you in accordance with your policy.
  • Cover or coverage : The extent of protection given to you by your policy. If you are covered for an event, it means that you can claim back from your insurance provider a specified amount of expenses you incurred during that event.
  • Current market value : The amount of money you could get for an item if you sold it in the current local market. This amount is based on the original cost, the current condition and age of the item, and what it could be sold for in its present state.
  • Damage: Harm or injury to a person or property, resulting in the property losing value or not being able to be used properly.
  • Disability : A physical or mental condition that restricts a person’s movements, senses or activities. A disadvantage or handicap, especially one imposed or recognised by the law.
  • Emergency medical care : Medical care that is needed in an unexpected emergency. This does not include any type of regular medical care or foreseeable medical needs.
  • Endorsement: Any special condition listed on your insurance policy as an extra reason for you to buy the policy.
  • Excess: The excess is an amount that you pay instead of the insurer, e.g. “the first” $250 or $500 of a claim. Insurers usually have either a policy with different excess options that you choose between, or separate policies that each have a different excess amount. You can pay a lower premium if you have a higher excess, but you need to be sure that you could afford to pay the excess unexpectedly if you had to make a claim.
  • Exclusions : Anything that is not covered by your policy. Common exclusions include travel to high-risk countries, dangerous activities such as bungee jumping, risky behaviour, such as taking alcohol or drugs, pre-existing medical conditions, and loss of items left unattended.
  • Home: Your usual place of residence in New Zealand.
  • Incidental:  Costs associated with an unexpected covered event, which are not directly related to the event.
  • Inclusions: Any event, item or expense that is covered by your policy.
  • Injury: Anything that physically harms you and occurs by accidental or violent means, which is covered by your policy.
  • Journey: One of the terms insurers use to talk about the period you’re covered for, from the time you leave home until the time you return to your home. Also known as your trip, voyage, or travels.
  • Limit/benefit limit: Policies have a limit on the amount of benefits you can claim per year or per journey.
  • Luggage and personal effects: Personal items that you own or carry with you on a trip that is covered. This includes but is not limited to: suitcase or backpack, clothing, jewellery, computer or laptop, your phone and other portable electrical devices or equipment.
  • Medically necessary: Medical treatment that is needed to preserve your health, is suitable to treat your symptoms, and can be safely provided in your current location. This does not include treatment or procedures that are performed in your current location because it is merely convenient.
  • Natural disaster: An event caused by nature and not by any human activity, including earthquakes, storms, bushfires and floods.
  • Overseas medical expenses: Expenses incurred overseas for ambulance transport, hospital admission, surgical nursing, and emergency dental treatment.
  • Period of cover: The time your travel is covered by your policy.
  • Personal liability cover: Cover for costs incurred for which you are legally liable. You are legally liable if your negligence causes loss or damage to someone else’s property. Personal liability also covers you for injury to a person who is not a member of your family or travelling party. Personal liability cover does not cover damage you caused deliberately or that breaks the law; damage caused by your business or your employee; your ownership or use of a vehicle, aircraft or watercraft; or you passing on an illness to someone else.
  • Policy:  The travel insurance contract you have taken out with an insurance provider.
  • Pre-existing condition: A medical condition that existed in any form before you signed up for the insurance policy, whether or not you had your symptoms examined by a health practitioner. Your policy may usually list a time limit for the condition to be pre-existing, e.g. you have seen a medical practitioner in the past 90 days before you started your journey, or you have been prescribed a medication within the past 60 days.
  • Premium: The amount you pay your insurance provider for your travel insurance cover. Your premium must be paid on time for your travel to be covered.
  • Reasonable: When associated with an expense or cost, “reasonable” refers to what is usual, needed, and matches the standards of your previously scheduled travel.
  • Refund: Cash or company credit that can be given to you as reimbursement for your expenses, according to the terms of your policy.
  • Rental car insurance excess : The excess charged if your hire car is damaged or stolen.
  • Resumption of journey benefit : The benefit you receive if you claim the expense of resuming your travels. You can make a claim if you had to return to New Zealand suddenly due to a serious injury, illness, or the death of one of your relatives or business partners in New Zealand.
  • Sudden illness or serious injury : Illness or injury that occurs during your period of cover and requires immediate treatment by a health practitioner.
  • Travel delay : Scheduled transport that is delayed by over six hours. Scheduled transport can include plane flights, trains, trams, buses, ferries or cruises.
  • Unforeseen: Any circumstance that is out of your control. This can include illness, accident, cancelled flights, or natural disasters.

If you are planning international travel at this time, please read our COVID-19 related travel advice here , alongside our destination specific travel advice below.

Exercise increased caution

Exercise increased caution  in Fiji (level 2 of 4).

Crime Theft and assault have been reported by locals and tourists alike, with most occurring at night and in urban areas. We advise New Zealanders to avoid poorly lit areas at night, particularly in Suva. Female travellers can be subject to sexual harassment and there have been incidents of sexual assault against tourists. Female travellers should take extra care, and avoid walking alone, particularly at night.

Petty crime against visitors, such as bag snatching has been reported. While violent crime towards foreigners is not common, foreigners may be the targets of opportunistic crime, such as theft, robbery and home invasion. We advise New Zealanders to be alert to their surroundings at all times and take steps to safeguard and secure their personal belongings. Remain vigilant on public transport, including in taxis. Theft of valuables including passports from hotel rooms and vehicles has been reported and particular care should be taken to secure these items. Tourists have been targeted at the main international airports of Nadi and Nausori, with the opportunistic theft of passports and unattended luggage.

There have been spates of credit card fraud in the past in Fiji, including use of credit card skimming devices or other types of data theft. New Zealanders are advised to take extra care when paying with credit cards or withdrawing money from ATMs. This includes covering your PIN number when entering it, keeping your cards safe and carefully checking credit card statements to ensure no fraudulent charges are present.

Security Situation The security situation in Fiji is stable. Fiji has experienced periods of political instability in the past and New Zealand citizens throughout Fiji are advised to avoid demonstrations, street rallies and areas of military exercises and operations. There can be limitations on judicial redress for decisions made by authorities.

General Travel Advice New Zealanders are advised to respect religious, social and cultural traditions in Fiji to avoid offending local sensitivities. Modesty and discretion should be exercised in both dress and behaviour, particularly outside of tourist areas and when visiting villages.

Tropical Cyclone season runs from November to April, but cyclones may also occur outside of this period.  In the event of a cyclone or any other natural disaster, follow the advice of local authorities and your hotel or resort management.

New Zealanders undertaking tourist activities in Fiji, including travel between islands and adventure activities such as scuba diving, should check that they are covered by their travel insurance policy. Always use available safety gear such as life jackets or seatbelts, and use another provider if these are not available.

Medical services in Fiji can be limited. We advise New Zealanders travelling or living in Fiji to have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders in Fiji are encouraged to  register their details  with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

What is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover several costs and disruptions when travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per plan; however, travel insurance can typically help protect against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, overseas medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. Things like the destination, length of trip, optional additional cover for specific activities and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of a travel insurance policy varies from traveller to traveller because various factors affect the amount payable.

At Cover-More, we consider a number of factors when calculating the total amount payable. The following is a guide on these key factors, how they combine and how they may impact the assessment of risk and therefore the premium paid:

  • Area: higher risk areas cost more.
  • Departure date and trip duration: the longer the period until you depart and the longer your trip duration, the higher the cost may be.
  • Age: higher risk age groups cost more.
  • Plan: International Comprehensive+, which provides more cover, costs more than International Comprehensive or Domestic.
  • Excess: on some policies you can choose the excess amount.
  • Cruise cover: additional premium applies.
  • Cancellation cover: on some policies you can choose your own level of cancellation cover. The more cancellation cover you require, the higher the cost may be.
  • Adding cover for Existing Medical Conditions and pregnancy (where available): additional premium may apply if a medical assessment is completed and cover is accepted by us.
  • Options to vary cover (where available): additional premium applies.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Policy Wording to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may impact your travel plans. By purchasing travel insurance with cancellation cover prior to departure, your policy can help by providing cover for the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of overseas medical treatment, lost passports, and personal items while you’re travelling.

The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval. To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as medical reports, itemised medical bills or police reports to confirm the incident occurred.

However, at Cover-More, if our customer becomes ill overseas, they can also contact our 24-Hour Emergency Assistance team for support and to seek approval for expensive medical bills to be paid directly by us to the medical care provider/s instead.

Always read the Policy Wording before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

What does – and doesn’t – travel insurance cover?

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the  Policy Wording  before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated if claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including cancellation, pre-existing medical conditions, theft or loss of belongings, adventure sports, COVID-19 scenarios and more.

For full details of the exclusions within our Cover-More travel insurance plans, consult the  Policy Wording .

When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

The best time to purchase travel insurance is as soon as a trip is booked, as this can increase protection. When purchased ahead of time, a Cover-More customer can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the 21-day cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before departing on the trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made where cancellation cover is added to the policy.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance helps cover you if something happens to you or your belongings while travelling and can include cover for illness, accidents and flight delays.

On this page

When you need travel insurance.

It's best to buy travel insurance as soon as you make your first booking – this ensures you're covered if you need to change or cancel any of your plans before your departure date.

The main reason you may need travel insurance for a domestic trip is to cover your costs if your trip needs to be cancelled or delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

When you're travelling in New Zealand:

  • your belongings are usually covered by your normal contents insurance – check your policy to make sure
  • you're covered by the health system and ACC if you get sick or are injured.

If you're travelling overseas, you need travel insurance. Your usual contents or medical insurance does not cover you when you're outside of New Zealand.

Some countries, including Fiji, require proof of valid travel insurance to enter the country.

What travel insurance covers

Most travel insurance will cover you for:

  • cancellations and delays due to unforeseen circumstances – like bad weather, an accident that means you can't continue your trip, or the death of a close relative at home
  • medical treatment if you’re injured or get sick – including travel home if you need it
  • lost or delayed luggage
  • damaged or stolen personal items
  • accidental damages or legal expenses you incur while overseas – except for motor vehicle accidents, which need to be covered with separate rental insurance.

Travel insurance won't cover you if you just change your mind about your trip, including if you want to cancel because there's been a terror attack at your destination.

You also won't be covered if a 'do not travel' advisory is issued for your destination, or to embargoed countries and you choose to travel anyway.

Your rights

Insurers operating in New Zealand must comply with consumer law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act. They don’t apply if you book insurance with an overseas provider while overseas.

Consumer Guarantees Act (external link)

Fair Trading Act (external link)

Most insurers also follow the Insurance Council of New Zealand's Fair Insurance Code, which includes agreeing to:

  • provide a professional service
  • give accurate information
  • explain terms and conditions, and exclusions – if you need them to
  • tell you if anything changes
  • settle claims fairly and in a reasonable amount of time
  • protect your privacy
  • have a fair complaints process
  • act on feedback and complaints.

When you take out travel insurance, you must:

  • tell the truth and give insurers the information they ask for – called disclosure
  • report stolen items or accidents as soon as they happen
  • follow instructions from your insurer – for example, to keep receipts or go to a specific hospital
  • keep receipts for costs incurred or for items purchased
  • take reasonable care – for example, lock rental car doors and don't put valuable jewellery or prescription medicine in checked-in luggage.

Choosing the right travel insurance from an insurer, travel agent or bank

You can buy travel insurance directly from an insurer, or through a travel agent or through your bank.

If you have a premium credit card (for example a 'gold' or 'platinum' card), it may come with built-in travel insurance. It’s important to read policy terms and conditions carefully and weigh up whether comprehensive travel insurance is a better way to go.

The cost of the insurance will depend on:

  • how long you'll be away
  • your age – cover can cost more if you're older, and some policies include dependent children for free
  • the excess you want to pay if you need to make a claim – some insurers let you pay more for a lower excess, or vice versa
  • the activities you're planning while away – some insurers charge extra for ski or snowboarding trips, and some won't cover things like scuba diving or rock climbing
  • the type of policy you choose – a comprehensive policy will cost more than a budget one, but will provide you with more cover.

If your credit card comes with travel insurance:

  • check the requirements to activate the insurance – you may need to pay for your flights or travel expenses using your card
  • check your card's policy covers your plans – including the length of your trip and any activities you're planning
  • pre-existing medical conditions usually aren't covered – contact the insurer to see if you can add cover for a fee
  • you may have to pay a higher excess when making a claim.

Getting the travel insurance you need so that everything is properly covered

Every policy is different. Read the policy wording and check the limits carefully before you purchase – and if you're not sure about anything, ask your insurer for more information.

Travel insurance covers the belongings you take away with you. Your policy will usually have a total limit for all your belongings, and individual limits for valuable items like computers and jewellery.

If you're taking items that are worth more than the limits, you can usually choose to pay extra to increase the cover on these items if you want to. Check with your insurer.

If you need to make a claim, the insurer can usually choose to:

  • replace the item
  • repair the item, or
  • pay you the value of the item in cash.

If your baggage goes missing or an item is stolen, report it to the authorities and contact your insurer straight away. Check your policy wording for any time limits – for example, you may need to contact the police within 24 hours of a theft.

Cover specific to international travel

New Zealanders are entitled to free emergency medical care in the UK and Australia.

Medical care and expenses

Pre-existing conditions.

Pre-existing illnesses or injuries are not usually covered by travel insurance.

Some insurers have a list of pre-existing conditions that they automatically cover. If your condition is not on the list, you may still be able to add cover for an extra fee – talk to your insurer to find out more.

Medical expenses

Travel insurance covers the cost of treatment if you're injured or get sick while you're away. It may also pay to get you home if you're unable to continue your trip. Check your policy to find out what you're covered for and when – a comprehensive policy will give you more cover than a basic one.

Dental treatment

Travel insurance usually only covers dental treatment for repairs or pain relief if you injure healthy teeth.

If you're injured in an accident overseas, ACC may be able to help with treatment costs once you're back in New Zealand.

If you're a New Zealander injured overseas (external link) — ACC

Personal liability

Personal liability covers you for accidental damages (and any related legal expenses) incurred while you're overseas. Personal liability cover usually only comes with comprehensive travel insurance policies – check your policy to find out what you're covered for and up to what amount.

You won't be covered if you were found to have committed the damage:

  • on purpose, or
  • recklessly – including if you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Personal liability doesn't cover you for motor vehicle crashes – including for scooters or mopeds over a certain capacity (often 200cc). You'll need separate insurance for any vehicles you rent. (Some policies may cover the rental insurance excess, though.

What's not covered?

You're not covered:

  • if you just change your mind about wanting to travel – even if there's been an act of war or terrorism at your destination, unless a 'do not travel' advisory has been issued
  • for medical expenses related to Covid-19 if you get it either in a destination that has a 'do not travel' advisory issued because of COVID-19 risks, or you haven't followed the vaccination and testing requirements of the airlines you're flying with and the countries you're visiting
  • for elective medical or dental treatment (treatment you choose to have, rather than treatment you need)
  • if an accident happens while you're under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

If you're staying in an AirBnB or holiday home rather than a hotel, check your policy wording – some insurers won't cover you for any accidental damage you cause while you're there.

Most comprehensive policies cover non-refundable travel and accommodation costs if something happens (like an illness or accident) that means you need to cancel or cut your trip short.

Your policy may also provide cover for alternative transport or extra costs if you have an unavoidable delay – for example a cancelled flight or missed connection.

Check your policy for the details and conditions that apply to you – for example, you may not be covered if your trip has to be cancelled due to a natural disaster.

Making a claim

  • Call your insurer as soon as you can if you need to make a claim – you may need to get big expenses like hospital bills pre-approved.
  • If you've lost belongings or they've been stolen, report the loss to police straight away. Insurers often require paperwork to show you've done this within a set time – check your policy.
  • Keep all receipts and documents related to a claim so you can send them to the insurer. You can't claim for something if you don't have evidence.
  • If your claim is declined, follow the steps below – especially if your claim falls into a grey area, for example whether or not you left your bags 'unattended'.

Steps to take to ensure your travel insurance claim is successful

Complain to your insurer.

Many people can sort out their problem directly. Your insurance company will have a complaints process, for example, if you're unhappy with the outcome of a claim, a different assessor will look at your case.

Tips when complaining:

  • Be clear it's a complaint: To make sure your issue is dealt with following your insurer's internal complaints process.
  • Stick to the facts: Explain the problem in detail and provide any evidence you have.
  • Tell them what you want: Be clear what you expect to fix your concern.
  • Take time out, if needed: If the conversation is getting heated or you need time to consider their response, call or email back another time.
  • Take notes: Write down the date you formally complained. Insurers must acknowledge your complaint in 5 business days and respond to it in 10 business days. For your own records, it may be best to put your complaint in writing, especially if it is complicated.

Contact the insurer's dispute resolution scheme

All insurers must belong to a disputes scheme. Contact them:

  • for guidance before talking to your insurer
  • if you and your insurer are finding it hard to agree.

Their services are free.

Dispute resolution schemes are neutral — meaning they look at facts from both sides. They might help you and your insurer settle your complaint by talking it through, for example, with mediation. If this isn't possible, they will make a recommendation — sometimes calling on another expert, such as a loss adjustor, for extra advice.

Your insurer must act on whatever the scheme recommends. But you don't have to accept their recommendation if you don't agree. Speaking to a lawyer would be your next step if this were the case.

There are two dispute resolution schemes who look at insurance-related complaints:

  • Financial Services Complaints Limited (FSCL) (external link)
  • Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) (external link)

Take it further

Commerce commission.

Report your insurer to the Commerce Commission if you think:

  • you have been misled
  • they have said something untrue, such as telling you the policy covered something it doesn't
  • they have pressured you into taking out a policy you did not want.

The Commerce Commission can't investigate every complaint, or solve your individual problem. But they can warn or prosecute the business. Your information helps them assess which consumer issues are causing the greatest harm.

Get support at any point from:

  • Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) — a free, independent service, run by volunteers. CAB can advise you on your consumer rights and obligations, in person, by phone, or online.
  • Community Law Centre — offers free one-on-one legal advice to people with limited finances. The organisation has 24 community law centres throughout the country. You can find legal information and other resources on its website.

What does travel insurance not cover? Why travellers should understand force majeure events

Sarah Pollok

Events such as the civil unrest in Noumea, New Caledonia, could void a traveller's insurance or bookings. Photo / AP

When planning a trip, no one wants to consider the many ways things could go terribly wrong. Yet, the reality is that earthquakes, labour strikes, pandemics and floods don’t stop because we’re on holiday.

In the past few weeks, the lives of locals and travellers have been upended by riots in New Caledonia , Iceland’s volcanic eruption and Indonesia’s freak flash flood.

Tourism businesses such as airlines, hotels, tour groups and travel insurers know these events can come out of nowhere. For this reason, many terms and conditions include a little something called a Force Majeure clause.

French for “major force”, a force majeure is a clause you’ll find in many contracts. Essentially, it removes liability for extraordinary, unforeseen events beyond the parties’ control and prevents them from fulfilling obligations.

These could be social or government actions (war, civil unrest, labour strikes), or natural disasters (fire, storms, floods) and while they’re in various types of contracts, travellers should know what they are for key businesses they book with.

One often sees a force majure clause work out with domestic flights in New Zealand, as airlines are not obligated to provide refunds or compensation if a flight is delayed or cancelled for reasons outside its control (AKA a force majure).

It can also catch out travellers who endure a major disruption and then realise their travel insurer will not cover the resulting expenses, which can be unusually high following something like civil unrest or an earthquake.

In the wake of Europe’s extreme heat waves , which caused emergency evacuations and ruined holidays for thousands, some insurance companies announced plans to include heatwave cover.

How do you know what travel insurance covers?

A good insurance company will clearly state exclusions in its product disclosure statement (PDS). For example, Southern Cross Travel Insurance PDS clearly states: “We won’t cover any claims, costs or losses or liabilities directly or indirectly arising from, related to or associated with the following,” and lists examples including war, invasion, or and government restrictions.

Southern Cross states travellers are covered in instances of riot or civil commotion if it begins after you depart on your trip and you “try your best to avoid it”.

How do you know what your tour operator covers?

As for tour companies, airlines, hotels and other tourism businesses, you must read the Ts&Cs before you finalise a booking or payment, as this is when you’re typically asked to agree to the Ts&Cs. If you find it difficult to find them, contact the company directly.

Between airlines and tax companies, group tours and accommodation, one could easily engage with a dozen or more tourism providers during a holiday. If the thought of sifting through legal documents for every company feels overwhelming, at least comb through the Ts&Cs of companies you’re spending significant money with, such as airlines and accommodation.

Reading the policies means you know exactly what you’re entitled to if things go awry before or during your holiday.

If a force majure occurs, will I be left high and dry?

It’s worth noting that a force majure clause may mean a company is not legally obligated to offer refunds, compensation or assistance during a major event. However, this doesn’t stop companies from deciding to help anyway.

If the force majure occurs before the trip takes place, it’s not uncommon to see operators offer refunds or credits. If the destination becomes dangerous during the trip, a travel operator may decide to help customers, especially if they value customer relationships or are a premium product.

For example, when a major earthquake occurred on the final night of my Intrepid trip in Morocco, the company wasn’t legally responsible for helping me pull my departing flight from Marrakesch forward two days. Yet, the company’s commitment to customers meant they chose to assist.

The important part for travellers is knowing the bare minimum their tour operators and travel insurance will cover when the unexpected happens. Because when locals set fire to a town and you’re locked in your hotel, or a severe tornado warning barrels towards you, the last thing you want is to be caught without support.

Other exclusions to be aware of

A force majure isn’t the only term you should look out for in travel insurance. Travellers should pay close attention to other exclusions before participating in an activity that could leave them with a hefty bill.

For example, in July 2023 an Australian man was left with a $400,000 bill after a trip to Bali went wrong and he realised this activity was not covered by his insurance.
