Eat your fill of pesto genovese, this historic port city’s most famous dish, and then travel to Italy’s chic capital of fashion and design. Learn about taking the train from Genoa to Milan.

Genoa may have all the captivating grit of a major port city, but when you arrive in Milan, you will realize it is quite the opposite! Sleek designer fashions fill the streets and shop windows, fashionistas crowd the cafès at sundown for the traditional aperitivo, and the elegant white Duomo soars above it all. Put on your best shoes and take a train to Milan .

Genoa is so famously known to be a difficult city to drive in, that it is even mentioned in the lyrics of an Italian folk classic. When it comes to Milan, the city applies a pollution surcharge on your rental car to drive into the center. Skip the stress of navigating these two major cities by car and travel the 90 miles (145 km) between Genoa and Milan in less than 1.5 hours by direct train

Frequent Trains from Genoa to Milan

There are almost 40 direct Trenitalia trains between the Genova Piazza Principe  and Milano Centrale stations each day, including both high-speed Alta Velocità (AV) and Regionale Veloce trains. Trains depart from early morning to late in the evening, so you have a vast selection of times to choose from that can fit in your travel schedule. The fastest trains take about 1.5 hours to make the trip, and the slowest about 1 hour and 50 minutes. Tickets range in price from $11-22.

Be aware that weekend and holiday schedules may include less frequent service and longer travel times.

Direct Trains from Genoa to Milan

All Trenitalia trains from Genoa to Milan are direct. Most are on high-speed trains, but some are on the fastest Regionale Veloce trains.

Amenities on Trains from Genoa to Milan

Frecciabianca and Intercity trains are the lowest-tier Alta Velocità trains, faster and with more amenities than Regionale trains. These trains include 1st-class and 2nd-class air-conditioned cars with individual power outlets. First-class tickets include a complimentary drink and newspaper, and all trains have either snack and drink service and/or a café car.

Regionale trains are the most basic Trenitalia trains. The Regionale Veloce is a faster route that makes less intermediate stops. There are no reserved seats, so seating is based on availability. There are sometimes 1st and 2nd class cars on Regionale trains, so passengers choose an available seat in the appropriate car for their ticket class. Regionale trains do not have a café car or food service, and the air conditioning and power outlets may not work.

Traveling from Major Airports to Cruise Ports

Getting from Milan to Genoa Cruise Port

Since flight connections to Genoa Airport are not very frequent/convenient, it is often a good idea to fly to Milan and then go to Genoa by car/train/bus. Below we refer to "Milano Centrale" which is the Italian name for the Milan Central Train Station -- a central train hub.

All information below including itineraries/prices/drive times etc. are intended as a general guide to help you plan your trip. They are in no way definitive nor can they be considered 100% accurate as the information contained below may change without notice. Bluesun cannot be held responsible for any delays, deviations in the program, local strikes, or any other occurrence that may cause a traveller to miss their flight/cruise.

So let's get started!

When flying to Milan you usually fly into one of the following two airports,  Malpensa  or  Bergamo .

Section 1 - flying into Malpensa Airport

Usually the "traditional" airlines like ALITALIA, LUFTHANSA etc. fly to Malpensa which is connected to the center of Milan by train/bus. For flights to Malpensa you can either:

A.  Book a bus transfer with us (available only when you have booked the cruise with us as well) from Malpensa directly to the cruise port (around 2-2:30 hours drive). In order to book a transfer your flight must arrive at least 6 hours before the cruise departs.

B.  Take a train from Malpensa to Milano Centrale and then see  Section 3 - from Milano Centrale to Genoa Cruise Port

Section 2 - flying into Bergamo Airport

Usually the "low cost" airlines like Ryanair fly to Bergamo which is to the East of Milan, connected to the center of Milan by shuttle bus (more convenient) or train (less convenient). For flights to Bergamo you can either:

A.  Take the shuttle bus from Bergamo to Milano Centrale (about €5 per person per way). It takes the shuttle bus around 60 minutes to arrive at Milano Centrale (not counting waiting time for the bus)

B.  There is no train station ending at Bergamo airport so you must take the Bergamo Bus to the Bergamo train Station (around 15 minutes drive, ticket cost around €2) and then board the train headed to Milano Centrale (takes around 50' - 1.15' with a ticket cost of around €5 - €6). This method is possible but not really recommended -- especially if you have limited time.

Section 3 - from Milano Centrale to Genoa Piazza Principe

Once you have arrived at Milano Centrale (Milan Central Train Station) you need to take the train to  Genova Piazza Principe  which is within walking distance (or short drive) to the Genoa Cruise Port.

The official site containing the train schedules, where you can also buy tickets online, is  TRENITALIA.COM . It takes the train around 1:40' to 2 hours  to get from Milano Centrale to Genova Piazza Principe, and the ticket starts from around €14 per person per way.

Section 4 - from Genova Piazza Principe to the Cruise Port (Statione Maritima)

The distance from the train station to the cruise port (entrance to entrance) is around 20-30' walk (depending on luggage) or 5-10' taxi drive. The best way to get there by foot is to ask for the " Statione Maritima " (Port) so someone will show you the best root from the train station. Alternatively you can take a taxi from the main entrance, to the Statione Maritima -- recommended if you have heavy luggage without wheels.

Keep in mind that after you arrive at the entrance to the Statione Maritima, your ship may not be anchored right by the entrance -- it is a big port -- so some more walking / shuttle bus ride might be necessary.

After you arrive at the Cruise Port, look for signs of your cruise line, or ask someone to assist you -- there will be staff there to help during normal embarkation times.

Section 5 - how long does the whole trip take?

Please give yourself plenty of time to get from Milan to Genoa Cruise Port -- at least 3-4 hours  if you're doing it on your own by train/bus

Section 6 - getting from Genoa Port back to Milan

To return to Milan do the reverse program, or book a transfer with us (when flying out of Malpensa)

To get to Bergamo airport on the last day, you can take the same shuttle bus or train from the center of Milan (Milano Centrale).

Port Genoa cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Genoa, Milan, Italy Riviera. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Genoa/Genova also serves as cruise port to Milano City and is located on Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean). Genova City is the capital of Liguria (coastal region in northwestern Italy) also known as the "Italian Riviera".

Genoa is approx 145 km (90 mi) from Milano and approx 185 km (115 mi) from Cannes France (direction northeast). The city has population around 600,000 (metro over 1,5 million) and is famous as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus (1451-1506).

Port Genova (locode ITGOA) is currently ranked Mediterranean's second-largest seaport (after Marseille France ).

In Genova are registered all vessels of the cruise shipping companies (both Carnival Corporation -owned subsidiaries) Costa and AIDA , as Italy is the preferable flag-state for Costa Group (their managing company).

Fincantieri (one of the world's largest shipbuilding companies ) owns the merchant shipbuilding yards Monfalcone , Marghera ( Venice ), Sestri Ponente (Genoa), Ancona , Castellammare di Stabia (near Naples ) and Palermo (Sicily) . The company also owns the naval shipyards Riva Trigoso (Genoa) and Muggiano ( La Spezia ).

Genova port's main ferry shipping destinations in Mediterranean Sea (both cargo and passengers) are Sicily Island (Italy), Sardinia Island (Italy), Corsica Island (France), Barcelona (Spain) and also Canary Islands (Spain). Genova is Italy's busiest cargo ship port by cargo tonnage. The port is also famous with its dismantling (shipbreaking) station where the ominous Costa Concordia ship wreckage was dismantled. The port is also one of the country's still profiting shipbuilding yards serving the yacht construction market, yacht and boat maintenance, navy shipyards.

Besides its containership and passenger (ferry and cruise) terminals, shipyards and various ship handling facilities, Genoa port also has several sailboat and yacht marinas. The list of the marinas includes - Exhibition Centre (Fiera di Genova, capacity 305 berths), Duca degli Abruzzi (capacity 350 berths), Molo Vecchio (old harbor, capacity 160 berths, max LOA length 150 m), Porto Antico (capacity 280 berths), Genova Aeroporto (for mega yachts, capacity 500 berths, max LOA length 90 m) and Fascia di Rispetto di Pra (capacity 1000 berths).

On January 31, 2019, Italian police announced the seizure of 2+ tons of pure cocaine (from Colombia) - Italy's largest drug bust since 1993. The drugs (street value ~EUR 500 million / ~USD 574M) were discovered in a TEU-container and packed into 60 bags. The unit was imported from South America and destined for Barcelona. The drugs belonged to several drug-trafficking organizations part of "Gulf Clan" (accounting for ~70% of Colombia's total cocaine export). Reportedly, the police replaced total 1801 packets of cocaine with salt, then sent the cargo on its way in a ploy to hold the drug runners. A 59-year-old Spanish man was arrested in Barcelona when he tried to collect the shipment.

Genoa cruise port

On March 23, 2013, here was christened MSC Preziosa . In the period April 29 - May 17, the Grand Celebration ship (operated by Iberocruceros, owned by Costa Group) was docked in Genoa for planned refurbishment and maintenance. Dry-dock works were performed at the shipyard San Giorgio del Porto - a major shipyard for repairs and refitting.

On November 14, 2013, the company Costa Crociere SpA announced its plans to open in late spring 2014 new offices in Genoa. The new office space is for about 190 employees. It is located on the 1st floor of the Carmonte office building (Piazza Piccapietra), neighboring with the company's Palazzo Costa headquarters. Genoa has been the company's hometown since the 1950s. The new offices became workplace for Costa employees that previously worked at Via De Marini and handled all the commercial and tour operations for Costa cruise passengers.

On June 30, 2014, the Italian Cabinet authorized the transportation (towing) of the salvaged Costa Concordia . The wreckage was towed from Giglio Island (the ship's sinking accident site) to Genoa for dismantling and recycling, The Concordia ship’s last voyage was provided by the salvage company Titan Micoperi. On July 23, 2014, at ~11 am started the towing of the wreckage towards Genoa. The ship moved at an avrg speed of 2,3 mph (3,7 kph) arriving in Genoa 4 days later (on July 27).

On November 7, 2014, here was christened the Costa Diadema . The new ship left Trieste on November 1. The maiden voyage to Genoa also visited Dubrovnik (Croatia), Corfù (Greece), Malta and Naples . The ship's inaugural cruise departed from Savona (on Nov 8).

In 2016, the port reported a record year with handled over 1 million cruise tourists. In 2016, Stazioni Marittime cruise terminals were upgraded with new equipment, including new gangways at Ponte Doria. The investment was ~EUR 2,2 million.

Since 2018, Port Genoa provides shore-power capabilities. The shore-to-ship electrical power suply technology (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) enables docked vessels to receive electricity from the city's power grid. From the berth, vessels can plug-in directly to the grid which allows full onboard operations without using the diesel engines/generators. The Japanese company has installed such systems in the USA ports Los Angeles CA , San Francisco CA , Juneau AK , as well as in other European ports ( Goteborg Sweden , Travemunde Germany , Livorno Italy ).

On July 7, 2018, during Costa Cruises' 70th-anniversary celebrations in Genoa (Costa Zena Festival) was constructed a huge waterslide (length 340 m/1115 ft) designed to break Guinness World Record for "longest slid in 1 hour". The slide was installed on Via XX Settembre street and helped to establish the world's new record of 775 km (481,6 mi) sliding in 1 hour. Another world record broken was for longest bunting string - 2070 maritime signal flags were connected into 2 km long line along the festival's areas. At Old Port and Piazza Caricamento were performed live 60 performers (street musicians, dancers, artists, acrobats), 29 singers, DJs, comedians. Piazza de Ferrari had for kids games, workshops and parties with mascots. The evening concert (at 8.30 pm) was on Radio 105 stage (opposite Piazza delle Feste) and included performances by popular Italian singers and bands.

For season 2019, the cruise port expects 30% increase in passengers (to 1,3 million), most of whom (around 750,000) embarking (homeport).

In July-August 2023 was completed the Cesare Imperiale Viaduct's retrofitting project. The waterfront promenade is in the Stazioni Marittime Terminal's area. The 300-m/ 980-ft long viaduct/road bridge (connecting Ponte dei Mille with Ponte Andrea Doria) is annually used by 1+ million cruise tourists.

Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria cruise terminals (Genoa)

Port Genoa's first cruise terminal is Ponte dei Mille (1930-opened). The facility was upgraded in 1991 and used to be the most advanced passenger terminal regarding technologies. It has capacity to handle 3x vessels simultaneously. The second cruise terminal (Ponte Andrea Doria) can berth 2x liners at a time.

The Maritime Station is close to downtown (old town), but in an industrial area, so it is better to use a taxi. In 2016, Stazioni Marittime's investments were EUR 2,2 million. Part of the new equipment were Ponte Doria Terminal's new gangways.

In July 2022 were annou nced plans to equip Stazioni Marittime's terminals with an additional pier (alongside Ponte Dei Mille West) with capacity to berth the world's biggest passenger liners (LOA length 330 m / 1083 ft)).

The project followed recent dredging works (for deepening the waterway) and included the existing quay's extension (from 290 to 380 m / 1247 ft), construction of a new boarding terrace and terminal building, and building a new quay line (at Calata Santa Limbania) alongside the former grain silos Hennebique (200 m long building). The quay (to be enhanced by 12 m in width) will serve the adjacent cruise terminal and will also provide mooring for leisure boats during no-ship days.

Ponte Parodi terminal is currently under construction. Its quay was once used for grain traffic (silos).

The Ponte Parodi cruise terminal project involves redesigning a 23000 m2 (247600 ft2) waterfront area part of the former industrial area named Ponte Parodi.

The new pier complex was designed by De Carlo and features a series of multi-functional spaces to be used for exhibitions and various commercial purposes on the pier. These buildings are enclosed in large glass surfaces and adjacent to a restaurant, cafes and pubs, a disco, gyms, swimming pools.

Sightseeing:

Genoa typically serves as a port of embarkation or disembarkation so it isn't often given high priority as a shore excursion. Our best advice? Enjoy a day here before or after your cruise. It's worth it. From a distance, the Genoa cityscape -- climbing up a steep, green hillside from the Ligurian sea -- is awash in color associated with all things Mediterranean : ochre, pink and red. It's a big town with more than 600,000 people, but it has a small town feel and layout that make it imminently walkable. Genoa in north-west Italy was one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2004 (along with Lille ). One of five Italian maritime republics in the 13th century, it has a center of beautiful late-renaissance palaces and churches, with winding alleyways in the old town around the port.   The historic center starts at Lanterna, encircled by the gradual development of the city that has spread into the surrounding areas. In front of the Stazione Marittima, is the sumptuous Palazzo Doria Pamphily del Principe, which was once the residence of the great Admiral Andrea Doria. Continuing from here, you will reach the Principe Railway Station where the route into the largest historic center in Europe begins.

Visit the Old Port , close to the cruise terminal where many of today's cruise ships now dock. In what once was a seedy waterfront in Northern Italy is now a charming blend of old and new structures featuring restaurants, shops, a movie complex, a maritime museum, a spectacular play and cultural center for kids, and, most importantly, an aquarium that is the largest in Europe .

The Acquario di Genova (Genoa Aquarium) is the biggest in Europe and second in the world, after Osaka , Japan . This is one of the most visited museums in all Italy . Its huge tanks reproduce the environment of the Mediterranean Sea and the oceans and contain over six hundred species.

The Galata Museo di Genova ( Galata Sea Museum ) shows the evolution of the port and the city starting from the late Medieval period to the present. In its Sala della Tempesta (Tempest Room) a ship simulator lets visitors experience the thrill of navigating a small boat through a heavy storm.   Only a 5 minute walk from dock.

From the Old Port, go east into The Historic center : It's the best example of entirely preserved Medieval town in Europe and in The Mediterranean area. A large part has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO and go towards piazza San Lorenzo, the only wide surface among the thick network of the carruggi, Genoa's alleys. Here stands the Cathedral dedicated to San Lorenzo, whose Gothic style dates back to the 13th century. A curiosity: the cathedral contains the model of a huge bomb which fell into the church without exploding during the 1942 bombings.

The Palazzo Ducale Since 1339 the Doges' residence, it is a venue of excellence for major events and prestigious activities. The Palazzo Ducale of Genoa is one of the city's most admired symbols.

The Palazzo Reale Lavish rococo rooms provide sumptuous display space for paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and Asian ceramics. The 17th-century palace -- also known as Palazzo Balbi Durazzo -- was built by the Balbi family, enormously wealthy Genovese merchants.

The La Lanterna (The Lighthouse)   The Lanterna, symbol of Genoa and most important lighthouse of the city, is a 77-metre-high tower, made of two blocks, square in section, roughly of the same height, and both with a projecting terrace. Built on a rock of 40 meters of height, the top of the Lanterna stands therefore at 117 meters above the sea level. Its light is visible from more than 50 kilometers away. The Lanterna has welcomed vessels and boats and guided them into the harbor for centuries. T he Genova Tourist Office

Shopping and food.

Shopping: The main shopping corridors of Genoa are the streets that radiate out from Piazza De Ferrari. The best boutiques and fashionable shops are found on via XX Settembre, via Roma, and in the elegant Galleria Mazzini. Those looking for style, but a less shocking price tag usually head to the Via San Luca for younger, trendy italian label clothing and accessory boutiques.

Genoa Food Specialties: Genoa is famous for pesto (basil, pine nuts, garlic, and parmigiano cheese) usually served over trenette or trofia pasta cooked with potatoes and green beans. Being a port city, Genoa also has some good seafood dishes such as the fish stew buridda. Cima alla Genovese is veal breast stuffed with organ meats, herbs, vegetables, and pine nuts, served cold. Evening life: The nights in Genoa are lively and cheerful: lots of people literally "invade" the old town streets, where all kinds of places have opened over the last few years: American bars, pubs, blues clubs, piano bars, cabarets, and places featuring all sorts of live music, from jazz to rap, from fusion to singer-songwriters music.

Also the promenade of Corso Italia is lined with charming night clubs overlooking the sea. In summer, private beaches host shows or turn into music clubs. There are also, obviously, disco clubs, often featuring wonderful outdoor terraces. And then "trendy" clubs with music and "off" theatre performances, for anyone looking for some unusual nights out.

Cruising to Genoa: Your Guide to a Day in Port

Cruise passengers arriving into Port Genoa are gliding through waters steeped in history and mystery. Some of the world’s most notorious explorers hail from this hearty seaport city, including none other than Christopher Columbus himself. In fact, an 18th-century reconstruction of the house in which he grew up now hosts a museum just outside the city’s ancient 14th-century stone walls.

Genoa Port is the second-largest seaport in the Mediterranean and forms a semicircular enclave of water dotted day and night with massive cruise vessels and ferry boats. It also harbors the historical Porto Antico , from which sailors-of-old launched brave new journeys to undiscovered lands. The once-tattered waterfront near the original port now brims with energy and excitement, making it the perfect way to start a shore-day in seaside Italian town.

Where to Start: Porto Antico

Upon arrival into Genoa Port, make your way around to Porto Antico , a short walk from any of the cruise-shop docks. Since the city’s main attractions are within 10 or 20 minutes by foot, there’s plenty of time to first enjoy the cafes, small shops and cultural spots that have sprung up in the old port area since its remarkable revitalization in the past few decades. It’s now a favorite spot for locals to meet up on a Sunday afternoon for cappuccinos, ice cream, jogging and dog-walking.

It’s easy to spot the Lanterna Lighthouse

Strolling the seafront is like literally walking into a maritime landscape painting from the Renaissance era. The Lanterna lighthouse from 1543 still stands guard over the port, welcoming travelers from near and far. Pretty pastel cottages, villas and trattorias spill up and down the hillside, painting the city in nostalgic ochre and pink brushstrokes topped with tufts of terracotta tile. To deep-dive into the water-centric nature of Genoa, stop by the Maritime Museum to see scientific reconstructions of ships, maritime voyages and transatlantic migrations.

Without question, the main draw at Porto Antico is the sprawling modern aquarium, known locally as Acquario Di Genova. It’s the largest aquarium in Europe, housing at least 15,000 animals and 400-plus species, including rare Antarctic fish. The Great Blue Ship sailing vessel complements the museum with reconstructed tropical environments.

A Day in Genoa on Foot

One of the best things about a shore day in Genoa is that the main cultural and dining experiences are within easy walking distance of the Old Port. It’s also easy to catch a taxi, shuttle or bus from the waterfront up to the main plaza, Piazza de Ferrari, and make your way around from there. Here are some highlights of an afternoon or a full day onshore in Genoa.

  • Piazza de Ferrari  – If you do nothing more than snag a café table in the middle of Piazza de Ferrari and watch the city whirl and twirl in its daily rhythm, you will have truly experienced the heart of Genoa. Feed the pigeons at the massive bronze fountain, and then wrangle your way inside the Palace of the Doges or the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house for a jaw-dropping tour of its interior architecture.
  • Cattedrale di San Lorenzo – It’s hard to peel your eyes away from the stunning 12th-century white-marble and black-granite edifice of Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. Inside the complex, you’ll find Roman ruins along with pre-Christian sarcophagi and a famous artwork by Lazzaro Tavarone titled “The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence.” A curious piece of history, if you know to look for it, is an unexploded artillery shell from WWII, fired on the cathedral by the British in 1941.
  • Palazzos Ducale and Spinola – Not far from the Cathedral, history buffs can explore a wealth of museum treasures and cultural exhibitions at Palazzo Ducale . Art lovers get a full immersion in classic Italian and Flemish Renaissance paintings at the 16th-century Palazzo Spinola .

Mangia ! Mangia ! Dining in Genoa

As in just about any Italian city, it’s all about the food in Genoa. As they say at every bistro, trattoria, osteria , ristorante , pizzeria or enoteca : Mangia ! Mangia ! – Eat! Eat! Sharing food and wine is at the heart of every Italian gathering, and it’s an imperative to indulge with gusto.

In a port city like Genoa, seafood is woven into every fold of a well-laid table. One of the most authentic local places to embrace the sea-centric dining scene is in the old-mariner neighborhood of Boccadasse . Nostalgic old-school fishing boats bob offshore, and the narrow streets are chockful of unpretentious fish-laden cafes.

Another specialty of Genoa cuisine is basil-based Italian pesto sauce, which was birthed in Genoa as far back at the 1500s . The genuine original pesto features olive oil, fresh basil, pine nuts, pecorino , Parmegiano cheese and green garlic. If you’re down in the port area, pop into Cavour 21 , a casual trattoria serving pesto the traditional way: with pasta, fagiolini beens and potatoes. It’s also the perfect place to pick up some Ligurian focaccia flat breads.

To experience ancient osteria dining in Genoa, head over the Toe Drue , which dishes out Lugurian and Piedmontese fare, including dry-salt codfish or Peidmontese beef ravioli topped with Castelmagno cheese. Not far from Piazza della Vittoria , you’ll find a classy vintage-style family-run ristorante known as Le Cicale . It’s one of the few places to try local dishes such as ravioli with black truffle or grilled squid with lemon-crème potatoes.

Shopping and Souvenirs

Italy is known for high-end leather and trendy designer fashions as well as tiny alleys and winding cobblestones streets filled with jewelry and accessories. Genoa is certainly no exception.

Start with a blitz of shopping on Via XX Settembre , and then traverse the pedestrian-only roads zigzagging off from Piazza de Ferrari. Via Roma is where to go for well-known designer goods and shoes, and it’s paralleled by Galleria Mazzini , a collection of small boutique shops within a modern 19th-century glass structure. For an even more concentrated collection of local shops, find your way around the maze of tiny alleys in the affordable Maddalena district. When it’s time to pick up souvenirs or gifts to take home, check out the designer outlet bargains at Via Caffa .

Shore Excursions and Day Trips

When your cruise ships docks in Genoa, the concept of a “shore excursion” can easily mean heading to other nearby shores – and it’s well worth the effort. With some of Italy’s more picturesque villages and islands within a short glide down the Italian Riviera, you could find yourself in the heart of Portofino or the charming Cinque Terre . Your cruise ship can arrange excursions, or you can make your own itinerary through independent cruise-excursion companies such as Viator.

Private Day Trip to Cinque Terra

While plenty of group excursions offer affordable ways to experience the seaside villages collectively known as Cinque Terra, Viator goes an extra step by providing a private driver to take you and fellow travelers of your choosing to this charming UNESCO-listed region. You’ll get a personal pickup from your cruise ship and can focus on the things that you enjoy doing within the cobblestoned streets and beaches of Riomaggiore , Corniglia , Manarola , Vernazza and Monterosso .

Tour of Genoa and Day Trip to Portofino

A full-immersion way to explore the city of Genoa as well as experience the sparkling coastal community of Portofino is to combine them with a planned Viator tour. You’ll spend the morning walking the historic center of Genoa, have some free time for lunch, and then board a small boat to the yacht-laden upscale village of Portofino . Along the way, there’s a stop at the color-clad village of Santa Margherita Ligure on the Tigullio Gulf.

With any time to spare before re-boarding your cruise ship in Genoa, get a final glimpse of the city from the Bigo elevator. From 130 feet high, you’ll bid arrivederci to this sparkling city by the sea.

Discovering Genoa on a cruise: what to do in a day

Genoa, located in beautiful Liguria, is one of the most frequent ports of call on Mediterranean cruises, here’s what to see and do during the port of call in Cruising Journal ‘s tips!

Genoa offers a lot to see, but you can also easily reach many other destinations! So it is also good to go back several times!

Let’s start with the city! Attraction suitable for both children and adults is definitely the Aquarium ! The Genoa Aquarium can be reached from the maritime station either on foot, with a distance of about 20 minutes (1.5 km), or by metro reaching Principe station about 200 meters from the port, and then reaching the San Giorgio stop with a total distance of about 10 minutes. The opening hours of the Aquarium vary according to season, as do the ticket prices according to age groups but also according to the time of purchase (i.e., whether the ticket is purchased first online or at the time at the ticket counter).

Adjacent to the Aquarium also are the Biosphere , which houses a portion of the tropical rainforest, and the Bigo , the panoramic elevator designed by architect Renzo piano that provides amazing views of the city. (A combined ticket for the 3 attractions can also be purchased).

Biosphere Genova

Bigo Genova

Bigo Genova

Another attraction on the coast is the Galata Museo del Mare , located 700 meters from the port and within walking distance. Opening hours and prices vary for this attraction as well, depending on season and age group. Here it is also possible to visit the Nazario Sauro submarine .

Galata Museo del Mare Genova

Galata Museo del Mare Genova

But now let’s devote ourselves to the city center! In about an hour it will be possible to discover the old part of Genoa ! Obviously, you cannot miss a walk to the Old Port , full of attractions, stalls and even little kiosks where you can taste something typical, and then right there you will find the Aquarium, the Biosphere and the Bigo. Also in the center of the square is Palazzo San Giorgio, one of the most important and well-known historical buildings in Genoa, which currently houses the headquarters of the Port Authority.

Palazzo San Giorgio Genova

Palazzo San Giorgio Genova

From the Old Port you can head to Piazza Banchi and stroll through the streets to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo . From there you can continue to Piazza Matteotti where you will find the Gesù Church and the Ducal Palace . Continuing further you will arrive at Porta Soprana , one of Genoa’s original gateways, and just nearby you will also find the House of Christopher Columbus. Finally head to Piazza de Ferrari where you will find the great fountain of Genoa and where the most important shopping streets, such as Via Roma or Via XX Settembre, are located.

Cathedral of San Lorenzo

Genova Porta Soprana

Genova Porta Soprana

Piazza De Ferrari Genova

Piazza De Ferrari Genova

Once you have seen the main attractions you can decide to take a walk back to the starting point and head to the ship or if you want to enjoy a view of the city from above there is one more place to visit! Head to Piazza del Portello which is at the end of Via Garibaldi, 700 meters from Piazza de Ferrari, from there you can take an elevator to the Castelletto Esplanade !

After the stop is over, all you have to do is go back down and, with a walk of about 600 meters, return to the San Giorgio metro stop to get back to the ship!

On the other hand, if you have already visited Genoa and would like to go elsewhere, you can opt for a visit to Portofino ! To reach Portofino , just outside the Maritime Station there are stairs leading down to the station! From there, Genoa Piazza Principe station , you can take a train to Santa Margherita Ligure, which takes about 50 minutes. When you arrive at your destination you will find a bar at the station exit that sells tickets for the bus to Portofino , which takes about 20 minutes. In Portofino highlights are the church of San Martino , the Church of San Giorgio , the Brown Castle , the Portofino Park , and of course the Piazzetta where elegant stores, restaurants, and bars are located.

Portofino

Church of San Giorgio

Finally, if there is time left, I recommend you go for a dip in Baia Cannone , which is about 550 meters from the Piazzetta of Portofino. It is really worth it! To return, simply take the bus back to the exact point where it left you to return to Santa margherita ligure and take the train back to Genoa Piazza Principe !

Baia cannone

Finally, another alternative, but only if you have plenty of time (otherwise you risk missing the boat), is San Remo. Also from the Genoa Piazza Principe station, you can take the direct train to Sanremo, which takes 2 hours each way, to see the famous Ariston Theater , the San Siro Cathedral , the Russian Orthodox Church , the Sanremo casino , and the beaches! The closest to the old town, and therefore within walking distance, is between Porto vecchio and Portosole, with beautiful scenery! (Remember to check train schedules first!).

So all that remains is to choose your favorite destination!

Booked on MSC Divina TA 8 March 2018 out of Miami and disembarking Genoa 28 March 2018. Flight reservations out of Milan-Malpensa Airport 29 March 2018 and was told by MSC rep on the phone that MSC has a transportation shuttle from the Genoa Cruise Port to Milan-Malpensa Airport. Cost is around $34 per person. Only caveat is that your flight cannot depart prior to a certain time to be guaranteed shuttle will get you there on time. However, a real bear trying to make reservation. Anyone done this before?

We did it a few years ago while on the Sinfonia. It was perfectly painless. Very good deal also.

Is it a bus or large van? I have been talking to MSC via phone and trying to get a reservation and it has been like pulling teeth. Also, do you receive some kind of ticket/paperwork to show that you have paid for the shuttle...like excursion paperwork? Thank you.

Large buses.

We actually did not purchase the transfer until departing from the ship. Guest Services said they had advertised the transfers in the daily newspaper but we never saw anything. Because of this we missed the deadline to purchase and were advised to speak with the gentleman who was in charge to see if he had space available. After debarkation, we were the bus area and found him. We had to wait about five minutes before finding out if we could buy the transfer or not. We also had to pay cash only (Euros) but the Guest Services had advised me of this beforehand. If we weren't going to be accommodated, our plan was to take the train to Milan.

Great information. But my Travel Agent and I have spent the past three months trying to make the reservation. Was reassured...after providing airline reservation for the day after debarkation, hotel reservation near the airport, and insuring they knew I wanted to take shuttle the day of debarkation...that reservation will show on booking record within a couple of weeks. Worse case...sign up first day of the cruise. Thanks again for the info. I owe you a cocktail. :D

I'm sure it will be fine. We were flying out that afternoon to Malta from MXP. The ride was very comfortable and the price was great. I had looked into private transfers and this was so much cheaper. Very organized.
