He was also a dog to sleep on his back but stopped when his arthritis became so bad and the other night we got to see him sleep on his back again which means the world to us that he is so comfortable. He's now able to keep up with his 13 year old brother so much better again. Very impressed with Dr Steve’s manner with our dog and professional skills in diagnosing ruptured left ACL with possible damage of the meniscus, the right ACL ruptured 2 weeks earlier. Clear communication to us that there were 4 positive signs … for ACL rupture and xray wasn’t required. Gave treatment options ranging from conservative hydro/physio to invasive surgery. Our cat Storm has had some recent bad experiences at vet surgeries, which makes him very anxious and … a bit aggressive – we were recently told we would have to sedate him heavily to bring him in for a consultation. Since adopting our 15 month old Misty 6 weeks ago, we were a tad concerned about her ravenous appetite and her constant scratching. She also had a small lump on her lower belly. Dr Tamara is a lovely, caring … Vet with 25years experience, full of great tips and advice, reassuring us that Misty’s lump was from her de-sexing op and at a site where her stitches were – this can take a few months for complete healing with the stitches dissolving under the skin. Her scratching is possibly to an allergic reaction to a particular dry food ingredient, we will switch her over to Hills to alleviate her troublesome itching. And we are purchasing a slow feeder to ensure she is chewing properly. Reducing her food intake, as she’s becoming a little pudding ☺️. Very nice, unscary visit for a very old, reactive & fearful Rottweiler who is getting to the end of his days.

I’ve been very nervous about having a vet see my two large, reactive dogs, as we have had bad experiences before. However the vet from Pawssum approached very carefully, using all the right body language to keep my (very old) … Rottweiler pretty calm, and was able to examine him. My somewhat younger and very energetic shepherd, (who is also reactive, although less so,) was a little too much for him to examine properly on this first visit, so she is going to get seen another time, with some gabapentin her system which I will give her first! Doctor/dogtor Stuart has seen my dogs twice now and both times has been fantastic with them. He’s very gentle and patient with them which I really appreciate. We were so grateful to meet Stephen for our visit with Simba who has cancer and not long to go. We were not sure if we required euthanasia that night as were very upset. Due to be a Sunday and living in rural area the peace of mind was so appreciated

My beautiful boy Wolf, suddenly became acutely ill on a Sunday lunchtime he began to vomit and have diarrhea, due to location of where we live and being a Sunday my local vet was closed and closest emergency vet wanted … me to wait. Having had a negative experience with the hospital, after our cat had been attacked, he became increasingly unwell. Not satisfied with the diagnosis I received I contacted Pawssum. We could not be happier with Pawssum and Tamara the lovely vet! We were very worried about our elderly great dane and needed vet attention on Christmas morning. The emergency vet clinics we called all said it would be at … least a four-hour wait. As our dane was unwell and is a very timid and anxious girl we really had no idea how we were to cope. Then I rang Pawssum who were amazing, sending a fabulous vet to our home just one hour after our call! Tamara thoroughly examined our dane and also our arthritic pug, diagnosed the issues and gave our dane a pain injection, clipped her toenails, and gave us ongoing medication and scripts for both dogs. I am most impressed with the service provided by pawssum relating to mobile veterinary service. The team were most helpful and managed to locate a vet, David, to come to the house to attend my very sick cat, Sheba. It … was early at night on a weekend. The vet arrived at the time arranged and examined Sheba thoroughly and then advised me to make an urgent appointment with my regular vet or an animal hospital and request that xrays of the chest, blood tests and an ultrasound be be taken to confirm the diagnosis and have relevant treatment prescribed as Sheba did have health issues. The vet stressed the importance of doing this within the next 24 hours for optimal care. He also advised me on the medication I could continue giving to the cat. I was most impressed with David’s professional assessment of Sheba’s condition, his very gentle but caring attitude and reassuring manner. I did manage to get an appointment with my regular vet who ordered the investigations as David suggested and the diagnosis of the worsening of her heart murmur, bronchitis and general lethargy was confirmed. An ultrasound is organised for Tuesday. I am happy to report that Sheba has picked up somewhat after I followed David’s suggestion to also keep Sheba very warm and to continue her on the medication she was on. Please thank David for me and let him know I am grateful for the care he showed to Sheba and the excellent advice he gave me to ensure ongoing management. In summary, the mobile vet service you provide is of very high standard, professional and sympathetic. I felt Sheba was in good hands during the consultation. I put a request to be called back on the pawwsum website. Within minutes I had a call and a vet was booked for the same day. Vet was at our house within 3 hrs of the phone call. Our dog was the calmest he has ever been seeing a vet, therefore, she was able to get a good look at him. Almost too easy!

I’d been adopted by a cat for about a month or so but had no idea of history or vaccinations or even gender, so eventually I thought it best to have it all checked out. As a non-driver, Pawssum became … an obvious choice. The price seemed fine and I was hugely impressed that I was able to get an appointment for noon on the same day (I arranged it very early in the AM and it was confirmed once working hours began). Dr Bahaa was even a bit early which was good, and after some trepidation on the cat’s behalf, we managed to find out she was a she, and already microchipped, so he got in touch with Tiff the cat’s actual owner. The end result – it was a nearby neighbour. We had a chat, and the neighbour is very happy for Tiff to keep visiting here, and now if Tiff doesn’t come home (to the neighbour’s house or mine) we know she’s probably at the other place instead! Which is less worry for all concerned. Also, the cat already has a vet so I now know I don’t need to be the one arranging that. So I’m getting all the cuddles and company without the need to worry about that other side of it. Win / win. But it was Dr Bahaa and Pawssum that got it to that point, and I’m grateful for the efficiency of it all. Read more “Almost too easy!”

Stress-free cat consult for Shelley

Old cat, sick and hiding in the garden. Vet visit = stress. Search online for vet home visits, found Pawssum. Dr Duncan arrived and fixed old cat! So much easier than a vet visit. I wrote a proper review and … it vanished. I can’t repeat it but basically, instead of dragging my sick old cat out of his hidey hole and stuffing him, struggling, into his carrier then driving him to the vet with all the street noise, and vet noise and smells, I only had to drag him out of his hidey hole and hold him quietly on my lap in his own lounge room. Dr Duncan checked him, took blood for tests (and called me later that day with results), and gave Shelley an anti-nausea shot and subcutaneous hydration. A full service, pretty much. Dr Duncan was gentle and thorough with Shelley, and communicative and reassuring with me. I can’t recommend Pawssum, and Dr Duncan, more highly. Convenient and less stress

My cat like most animals hates the carrier. So when I discovered a hotspot on him I just couldn’t deal with that drama. I called Pawssum and they had a vet out with it a hour or so. First time I’ve used this service. I had difficulty getting in to see my usual vet and didn’t want to drag all 3 dogs out when I had quite a sick dog (giant breed) dog to manage. Since adopting our 15 month old Misty 6 weeks ago, we were a tad concerned … about her ravenous appetite and her constant scratching. She also had a small lump on her lower belly. Dr Tamara is a lovely, caring Vet with 25years experience, full of great tips and advice, reassuring us that Misty’s lump was from her de-sexing op and at a site where her stitches were – this can take a few months for complete healing with the stitches dissolving under the skin. Her scratching is possibly to an allergic reaction to a particular dry food ingredient, we will switch her over to Hills to alleviate her troublesome itching. And we are purchasing a slow feeder to ensure she is chewing properly. Reducing her food intake, as she’s becoming a little pudding ☺️. I am most impressed with the service provided by pawssum relating to mobile veterinary service. … The team were most helpful and managed to locate a vet, David, to come to the house to attend my very sick cat, Sheba. It was early at night on a weekend. The vet arrived at the time arranged and examined Sheba thoroughly and then advised me to make an urgent appointment with my regular vet or an animal hospital and request that xrays of the chest, blood tests and an ultrasound be be taken to confirm the diagnosis and have relevant treatment prescribed as Sheba did have health issues. The vet stressed the importance of doing this within the next 24 hours for optimal care. He also advised me on the medication I could continue giving to the cat. I was most impressed with David’s professional assessment of Sheba’s condition, his very gentle but caring attitude and reassuring manner. I did manage to get an appointment with my regular vet who ordered the investigations as David suggested and the diagnosis of the worsening of her heart murmur, bronchitis and general lethargy was confirmed. An ultrasound is organised for Tuesday. I am happy to report that Sheba has picked up somewhat after I followed David’s suggestion to also keep Sheba very warm and to continue her on the medication she was on. Please thank David for me and let him know I am grateful for the care he showed to Sheba and the excellent advice he gave me to ensure ongoing management. In summary, the mobile vet service you provide is of very high standard, professional and sympathetic. I felt Sheba was in good hands during the consultation. I’d been adopted by a cat for about a month or so but had no … idea of history or vaccinations or even gender, so eventually I thought it best to have it all checked out. As a non-driver, Pawssum became an obvious choice. The price seemed fine and I was hugely impressed that I was able to get an appointment for noon on the same day (I arranged it very early in the AM and it was confirmed once working hours began). Dr Bahaa was even a bit early which was good, and after some trepidation on the cat’s behalf, we managed to find out she was a she, and already microchipped, so he got in touch with Tiff the cat’s actual owner. The end result – it was a nearby neighbour. We had a chat, and the neighbour is very happy for Tiff to keep visiting here, and now if Tiff doesn’t come home (to the neighbour’s house or mine) we know she’s probably at the other place instead! Which is less worry for all concerned. Also, the cat already has a vet so I now know I don’t need to be the one arranging that. So I’m getting all the cuddles and company without the need to worry about that other side of it. Win / win. Old cat, sick and hiding in the garden. Vet visit = stress. Search online for … vet home visits, found Pawssum. Dr Duncan arrived and fixed old cat! So much easier than a vet visit. I wrote a proper review and it vanished. I can’t repeat it but basically, instead of dragging my sick old cat out of his hidey hole and stuffing him, struggling, into his carrier then driving him to the vet with all the street noise, and vet noise and smells, I only had to drag him out of his hidey hole and hold him quietly on my lap in his own lounge room. Dr Duncan checked him, took blood for tests (and called me later that day with results), and gave Shelley an anti-nausea shot and subcutaneous hydration. A full service, pretty much. Dr Duncan was gentle and thorough with Shelley, and communicative and reassuring with me. I can’t recommend Pawssum, and Dr Duncan, more highly. Do you perform end of life services (euthanasia)? Yes, our mobile vets are experienced specialists in performing compassionate end of life services. We also provide aftercare services including gently, carefully and with utmost respect, handling and transporting your pet following euthanasia; cremation (either with friends or private); having your beloved pet's ashes scattered in the crematorium gardens; having your pet's ashes returned to you in a lovely container, tube or an urn; and paw prints and other memorabilia. Can I cancel my booking? Bookings can be cancelled until 24 hours before the appointment time. If cancelled after that time, we reserve the right to charge the fee due to potential loss of revenue resulting from the fact that our vet could not attend other bookings. Will the vet come with medications? Most of the time our vet will carry medications with them if they believe your pet may require them. This is why it is important to provide as many details about your pet’s condition during the booking time. Vaccinations

Regular vaccinations are a vital component of any dog or cat's healthcare plan. not only can they help protect your pet from potentially serious and life-threatening diseases, vaccinations can help your pet live healthier over the course of their life. a full clinical examination is provided with each vaccination., annual dog vaccination c5 $120*, annual cat vaccination f3 $110*, booster vaccinations for puppies, kittens and adults available - price varies, *discounts available for rescue organisations.

Heartworm Testing and Prevention

Anywhere there is a mosquito, your dog or cat is at risk of heartworm. if your pet hasn't been on any heartworm prevention or prevention has lapsed, it may be worthwhile testing for heartworm prior to any preventatives being given. your vet can discuss this with you. some preventatives cover heartworm alone, while others are also effective against intestinal worms, fleas and ticks., the heartworm injection (proheart) can be given to dogs from 12 weeks of age, followed by a second booster at 6-9 months, a third booster at 15 months of age (vaccination booster is usually due), then yearly for life..

Arthritis Pain Management

Signs of arthritis may include stiffness, limping, reluctance to get up and down stairs/furniture, licking affected joints, vocalisation or aggression when touched.  treatment may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (nsaids),  monoclonal antibodies (beransa, solensia), chondroprotectants (cartrophen), joint supplements, in addition to adjunct management including weight control, exercise modification and rehabilitation. , beransa for dogs and solensia for cats, typically involve a series of three injections, one month apart.  the response is then assessed to determine ongoing treatment.  , cartrophen will be a course of four injections given at weekly intervals, followed by a booster injection every one to three months..

Microchipping

If your pet likes to wander, is an escape artist or simply becomes lost, your pets microchip can be scanned at a vet, animal shelter or local council and the database checked and your furry friend returned to you. if you relocate or change your phone number, you must update your pets microchip details in order for your pet to be reunited with you., microchip with registration $75.

Tips and advice when contacting a breeder

While we make every effort to ensure that the breeders listed on Perfect Pets are registered, responsible, and maintain high ethical standards, please take 5 minutes to read the advice below and also see our detailed information on  finding a reputable breeder .    

Our recommendation is that you purchase pets locally and in person.  For many reasons, it is always preferable that you meet and get to know the breeder and vice versa. While many reputable breeders send animals interstate safely and without issue, we do not encourage this. 

When you contact a breeder, keep in mind that responsible breeders will want some information about things like -  the type of home you will offer, how much time you have for your new pet, if you have experience with the breed and if not, if you've researched the breed.  Responsible breeders don't want to receive emails and messages that simply ask 'how much for a puppy?', or 'when are kittens available' so tell them a bit about yourself.  

Remember - when you take on a new pet, you are making a decision that’s going to significantly affect your life for the next 10-15 years.  Please make sure the breed you are interested in suits your family and lifestyle, and that you can give it the type of home it needs to be happy.  Above all - use common sense and don't be impulsive.

Please ask the breeder these important questions:

1. Can you meet the mother and father, and how old are they? 

If you have any concerns about a breeder, the welfare of their animals, or if they fail to:

- provide clean and appropriate living conditions for their animals 

- meet their promise according to their Perfect Pets Q&A Checklist 

- provide documentation supporting health, micro-chipping, vaccinations, pedigree etc

We also endeavour to have both a male and female vet available should you or your pet have a preference. To provide this superior service we ask that whenever possible you please phone to make an appointment to see the vet. Naturally we will always accommodate emergencies, but to enable us to be fully prepared we still encourage you to please phone ahead if possible.

At Mermaid Vet, we offer high-quality friendly veterinary care in a relaxed, professional setting.

We offer a comprehensive range of services for your pet, including the following: consultations , puppy and kitten health checks , soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery , dentistry , vaccinations , digital x-ray, and ultrasound.

Some of our auxiliary services include dog grooming , cat boarding , puppy preschool and housecalls.

Health Checks

Got a new puppy or kitten? We offer free puppy and kitten checks with one of our vets. Start on the right paw with comprehensive advice on taking care of your newest member.

Vaccinations

Immunise your cat against Calicivirus, Panleukopenia and Feline Herpesvirus or your dog against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and Bordetella.

Puppy Preschool

Classes are designed for puppies between the ages of 6 and 12 weeks. The class usually runs on Tuesday evenings from 6:15pm to 7:15pm for a full four weeks.

We offer a cat boarding facility within our clinic that is designed to provide your cat maximum comfort and safety. There is the option of standard or luxury accommodation.

Dog Grooming

At Gold Coast Dog Grooming, our dog stylists would love the opportunity to pamper your pooch.

MEET DR. EMILY

I was born in New Hampshire in the United States and I decided to go to veterinary school in London, where I also have citizenship. I started my career as a small animal veterinarian in Brisbane and fell in love with the city and what it has to offer.  My love for animals came from my British grandmother who lived in the countryside with various rescue dogs and cats. I grew up understanding the significance of the human-animal bond and I feel that it is one of the most precious things life has to offer.  I decided to start Peaceful Paws as I believe it encompasses what being a vet is all about ... honouring the bond between human and animal. I understand this process first hand having had to say goodbye to my own animals and also being with numerous others in guiding them through the process. I endeavour to offer a peaceful and healing experience during a difficult time.

While people often hope for their pet to close their eyes and pass quietly in their sleep, this is rarely the case.  Instead, a natural death may be prolonged, painful, and upsetting for you to witness. Euthanasia is a way to provide your pet with a peaceful and dignified passing. It is a way to give back to them for all their years of friendship, loyalty, and unconditional love.

Knowing when it is the right time

It is important to discuss with your pet’s primary care provider and specialist regarding the specifics of your pet’s condition, their prognosis, and what you may see as their disease progresses. They can help guide you in adjustments of their medications or whether further testing or treatments may help.

Deciding on the right time can vary based on your pet, their disease, and the caregiver. Your pet should be doing the basics of eating, drinking, urinating, and defecating (ideally in the appropriate areas). Beyond this, are they doing any of the things that are unique to them or show they are enjoying their days? This could include going for walks, sunbathing, playing, greeting you at the door, or engaging with others in the home. Make a checklist of these things so you can visualize as you start to mark things off. You could also make a good/bad day calendar.

Making an appointment

We understand that scheduling an appointment to help your beloved pet pass is very difficult. You are trying to spend as much time as possible with them while minimizing suffering. Although Dr. Au can generally accommodate a home visit request within 24 hours, more notice is best especially if you have specific scheduling constraints.

The process

The appointment is approximately 30 minutes, but Dr. Au will adjust the pace to your pet’s needs and yours.  We can gather in a location that you and your pet are comfortable.  The first injection given will provide pain relief and relaxation, oftentimes inducing a deep sleep within 5-20 minutes. Once your pet is relaxed, the second injection will be administered and allow for a peaceful passing within 1-2 minutes.  Dr. Au will give you time to visit in private with your pet before they are transported for aftercare.

Preparing for the visit

You should decide who you would like to be present and where in your home everyone is comfortable.  A place to gather could be in the living room, on a bed, or in the backyard. Oftentimes, your pet will decide for you.

You are welcome to play music, light candles, share stories and memories, read a poem or prayer, or perform any religious or cultural ceremonies that you would like.

Encourage a potty break 1 hour prior to appointment time, if possible.  The sedation relaxes the bladder and can stimulate the GI system, so pets will get anxious if they feel the need to go potty.

If your pet is on any medications that provide pain relief or are anti-anxiety/sedating, Dr. Au recommends giving a dose 1 hour prior to appointment time.

While it is ok to feed your pets the day of the appointment, if they are given new foods or excess amounts it could cause stomach upset (vomiting or bowel movement changes). Save a few yummy treats to offer during the appointment. Canned food, favorite treats, deli meat, roasted chicken, steak, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and peanut butter are good options.

Should my other pets be present?

Other pets are welcome to be present during the process as long as they are not causing stress or discomfort to their housemate. If they need to be separated, we can give them a chance to say their goodbyes once the patient has passed. Pets do grieve and we encourage the opportunity for them to say their goodbyes too.

Should my children be present?

The death of a family pet is oftentimes a child’s first experience with loss.  It is an important time for parents to teach children how to express grief in emotionally healthy ways.  Please read the documents listed in the Resources section for more information on how different age groups process and understand the death of a pet and appropriate ways that you can address it.  Ultimately you are the parent and will make the best decision on how to involve your children.

SeaFire, the Gold Coast’s very own international fireworks competition, is returning to the shores of Surfers Paradise Beach!

Italy and the United Kingdom, two of the world’s best pyrotechnic teams, will compete for the coveted title at 6pm and 7pm respectively. The winner will be crowned at 7:45pm.

Australia’s leading pyrotechnic team, Skylighter, will close the night with a sensational Aussie fireworks finale at 8pm.

SeaFire is a free family-friendly event. Make a weekend of it with a staycation or have an early dinner at one of the many mouth-watering restaurants in Surfers Paradise.
