What are Itoh Peonies?

Intersectional peony hybrids, also known as Itoh hybrids, named in honor of Toichi Itoh, the originator of these unique hybrid peonies. They are representative of the progeny of crossing or hybridizing the two main groups or selections of peonies; the herbaceous hybrids which die down sub surface buds during their dormant season and the tree or woody shrub peonies which retain a year round woody branch structure above ground level. During their dormant season, the Itoh or Intersectional hybrids retain only extremely short (1"-2") woody stems above ground level. Ornamentally, they achieve the best of both parental worlds with the handsome flowers and foliage of the woody tree peonies displayed on an herbaceous plant, with annual new growth originating from buds below ground level. Strong healthy plants form attractive dense, neat rounded bushes which are shorter in stature than most tree peonies. Flowers are displayed above the handsome foliage that remains greener longer than their herbaceous parents. Intersectional hybrids are somewhat hardier than tree peonies and more tolerant of heat and humidity which extends their ornamental potential in both the North and south.

The fall is truly the perfect time for planting peonies. Almost all peonies have proven to be unbelievably long-term-lived plants sticking around approximately 50 to seventy yrs, so as soon you'll have them placed in the right way, a person will definitely benefit from them for a long time. These plants prefer a bright place having a well-drained ground. A good air flow movement available the the peony plant is also important and vital. All these settings assist these plants to prevent disease issues. To make the seeding hole for the purpose of a bareroot peony, dig the ground to a level of 12-18inch. Work with a garden fork to loosen the edges of the planting hole at the same time. It's always very critical that the "eyes, ", or growth, nodes, positioned nearby the bottom of the old stem, end up no greater than Two " under the ground surface area.

Paeonia ‘Magical Mystery Tour’

Paeonia ‘Magical Mystery Tour’

Plant number: 1.900.780.

Itoh Peonies are rare and unusual hybrids between Garden Peonies and Tree Peonies. There are several varieties, all highly sought after by collectors, yet easy to grow and very hardy. This selection forms a midsized upright bush of lush green leaves. The large semi to double blooms open creamy yellow with a heavy flush of lilac pink, ageing to ivory white with a pink picotee edging. Mildly fragrant. Peonies seldom need to be divided or moved, but if necessary it should be carried out only in the fall. Flowering is always best in a sunny location. Clean up the dead stems and leaves in the fall to help prevent disease problems. This selection dies right back to ground level for the winter. Flowers on cut stems have a short life which makes them less suitable in arrangements. A better alternative for indoor display, cut about an inch below a bloom and float in a rose bowl. An American introduction: Donald Smith, 2002.

Itoh Peony 'Magical Mystery Tour'

Adding product to your cart

Magical Mystery Tour Opens up a delightful pink, as it absorbs the sun-rays it transforms displaying two tone cream and pink giving fading tones of both during its blooming period a top addition to our 2020 list. Itohs have a larger range of colours, longer flowering periods and present a bushier more floriferous plant. They carry foliage similar to that of the Tree Peony however die back to ground level just as their herbaceous cousins. Itoh’s are more likely to flower much better in warmer and more temperate climates. They also have a higher tolerance to disease.

This Itoh will be happy in its pot for another 12 months before repotting or planting into your garden, with the best time for this being in autumn.

Make sure your soil pH is adjusted or maintained close to neutral for best results and use a slow release fertiliser in Autumn.

The pot will be happy in full sun but may benefit from part shade for added protection during a hot summer.

Note: At flowering age, but not currently in flower.

Magical Mystery Tour

itoh magical mystery tour

$ 85.00 (excl. tax)

Magical Mystery Tour is truly magical. While many Itohs occupy a similar colour range and are no less special for it, the flowers of Magical Mystery Tour open up extraordinarily deep orange, making awe-struck viewers do a double take. Flowers are semi-double approaching near full double on well grown mature specimens and display colours that are constantly in flux. Flowers can look different every hour and across multiple flowers on the same plant, providing a symphony of colour. Following one bloom to maturity takes us on a tour through oranges, corals, peaches, pinks, and pastels, resting at a cream color with pink-red highlights. This is a transformation that must be seen to be believed. Plants are vigorous, quickly growing into large bushes that are covered with multicolored flowers. Strong, rigid stems hold the flower upright under all conditions, as expected of an intersectional peony, and attractive, deep green Itoh type foliage results in a good looking plant all season long. Side buds extend the flowering period and makes for a plant that blooms over the course of weeks. Highly recommended and distinct amongst the Itohs.

itoh magical mystery tour

The beautiful salmon pink semi double flowers fade to lighter pink with a darker heart. Light fragrance, blooming in midseason with flowers up to 20 cm. As the plant ages it produces more double flowers.

Itoh peonies: what are they and why do you need one?

Alec White of Primrose Hall Peonies explains why Itoh peonies are such a special addition to the garden and introduces the beautiful new Itoh peony 'All that Jazz'.

Paeonia 'Cora Louise'

Everyone's talking about peonies at the moment. They've returned to the public consciousness after a few forgotten years in the wilderness of English cottage gardens. Most enthusiasts know about herbaceous and border peonies, but lesser-known Itoh peonies starred at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

This was partly due to Primrose Hall's entry in the Plant of the Year Competition. Paeonia ‘All That Jazz’, an Itoh peony, made it to the top 20 shortlist.

Paeonia 'Magical Mystery Tour'

Recommended Itoh peonies

Peonies are well-known for their big, blousy, sumptuous flowers. Itoh peonies take this a step further with an incredible range of shape and colour combinations. Just look at Paeonia ‘Lollipop’ , whose unbelievable flowers are bright yellow with purple flecks. Paeonia ‘Magical Mystery Tour’  boasts semi-double pale coral flowers edged in lilac. A real eye-catcher is  Paeonia ‘Morning Lilac’ , with its bright purple flowers and golden stamens.

If you prefer pastels, Paeonia ‘Pastel Splendor’  has gorgeous semi-double flowers in lavender and pale pink with a deeper burgundy flare from the centre. Another favourite is Paeonia ‘Joanna Marlene’,  which has huge single flowers in peach, gold and yellow. The flowers look like fruit pastel sweets.

For a real treat, consider Paeonia ‘Court Jester’ , which has a different flower shape entirely. It's a single flower with golden-yellow petals shaped like a jester’s hat.  Paeonia ‘Cora Louise’  has beautifully wide, pale lavender flowers with dark purple flares at the centre.

Where and how can I grow Itoh peonies?

Itoh peonies look great in large patio containers and make excellent border plants or specimen plants in the garden. If you plant an Itoh peony in a container, you'll have to feed it annually with a general, well-balanced feed.

Itoh peonies are really low maintenance. Like all peonies, they're long-lived and happy with minimal care – simply cut all dead foliage to ground level in late autumn. They prefer full sun but will tolerate partial shade, and they like all soil that is free-draining and fertile. For more tips on growing peonies, see  3 rules for growing the perfect peonies .

Like other peonies, Itoh peonies are very hardy, suffering little from pests and diseases. They're pretty much resistant to peony blight and seldom suffer from slug, snail, rabbit or deer damage.

Paeonia 'All that Jazz'

Why is Paeonia ‘All That Jazz’ so exciting?

The new Peony ‘All That Jazz’ has made it through the complicated process of hybridising. Released to the UK market in May 2019, it boasts all the positive characteristics of Itoh peonies. It's sturdy and long flowering with large blooms and beautiful colours.

‘All That Jazz’ was originally bred by Don Smith with apricot tones, burgundy basal flares and pink flecks. It is a lightly fragranced peony with flower heads of approximately 20cm. Staking is not necessary and the plants grow between 80–100cm in height with a similar spread.

Description

Let Peony 'Magical Mystery Tour' lead the way into summer with its bright burst of exotic-looking, coral-pink ruffled blooms. If you want to introduce a tropical splash of colour into your garden but don’t have the time to tend to tropical plants, this resilient and hardy perennial which is dressed in silky holiday attire with perfume to match is a sensible choice for you!

A cross between a herbaceous and a tree peony, intersectional (Itoh) Peony 'Magical Mystery Tour' is compact, bushy and easy to grow. Once it’s settled in you can leave it to flaunt its magic every year with very little intervention. Bursting forth into bloom from around May to June, it’s a real treat for the eyes during the spring-to-summer changeover.

Peony 'Magical Mystery Tour' has beautiful, semi-double, scented, soft peach-pink flowers, with the faintest hint of lavender edging. Each centre comprises a small cluster of stamens, while red flares taint the base of the petals. Blooms turns paler with age. Highly sought after, it is an unusual and very collectable Intersectional or Itoh Peony, flowering for much longer than many other types of peony. The finely cut divided green leaves provides excellent interest, colour and shape from spring to late autumn; they turn reddish as the autumn weather cools.

There is a sturdy framework of branches that do not require staking. Any fertile, free-draining soil in full sun or part shade will do and, for best results, plant in a fairly sheltered position. It is beautiful in a large pot but, like all of the Itoh Peonies, it also makes a stunning garden plant.
