John Scofield (born December 26, 1951) is a world renowned American post-bop, jazz-fusion guitarist who has played alongside some of the most revered jazz musicians in both the 20th and 21st centuries, hailing from Dayton, Ohio, U.S.

After moving to Wilton, Connecticut with his family and discovering his insatiable desire for music, Scofield began studying at the Berklee College of Music in 1970. After graduating in 1973, the guitarist performed and recorded alongside Chet Baker and Gerry Muligan, before becoming a member of the famous Billy Cobham-George Duke band. Scofield subsequently played in the bands of Gary Burton and Dave Liebman, before forming his own funk-induced quartet alongside Steve Swallow, Adam Nussbaum, and Bill Stewart. In the early ‘80s the guitarist toured the world with the notorious Miles Davis, and contributed to the recordings “Star People”, “You’re Under Arrest”, and “Decoy”.

In 1984 Scofield released his debut recording on the Gramavision label “Electric Outlet”, followed a year later by “Still Warm”. The Blue Matter Band later formed in the mid-‘80s, followed by the Marc Johnson ensemble, Bass Desires, with Peter Erksine on drums, and Bill Frisell and Scofield on guitar. After signing with Blue Note at the start of the ‘90s the label issued seven of Scofiled’s subsequent records notably including “Hand Jive”, “I Can See Your House From Here” with Pat Methany and “Groove Elation” – after which the guitarist started a fruitful relationship with Verve Records, which began with the acoustic album “Quiet” in 1996.

“A Go Go”, recorded with the revered avant garde jazz trio Medeski, Martin & Wood, was released in 1997 to critical acclaim and followed by an impressive touring schedule. Scofield later collaborated with British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, and crafted “Blood on the Floor: Elegy for Andy”, and later “Scorched”. 2001’s “Works for Me” was an undeniably traditional jazz record, unlike its successors “Uberjam” (2002) and “Up All Night” (2002), which showed the guitarist long-standing proclivity for jazz fusion. The John Scofield Trio, consisting of drummer Bill Stewart and bassist Steve Swallow, released the live album “EnRoute” in 2004, and the year after Scofield crafted the Ray Charles tribute album “That’s What I Say”.

2007 brought a label debut for Emarcy and the album “This Meets That”, proving once again Scofield's jazz-fusion stylistic themes, assisted by an ensemble of brass, reeds and horns. “Piety Street” arrive in 2009, followed by the album of covers ballads “A Moment’s Peace”, and “MSMW Live: In Case the World Changes Its Mind” in 2011.

Live reviews

It is surely a treat to see John Scofield grasp the attention of his audience with his unique blend of jazz-rock.

John Scofield is a well-trained guitarist having attended Berklee College of Music, and having performed with other highly regarded jazz musicians such as, Mile Davis, Herbie Hancock, Bill Frisell, and many others. He has an incredible backing band that takes the form of a traditional jazz group consisting of upright bass, drums, and keyboards. His band plays as a tight-knit group laying down the grounds for a perfect rhythm as John Scofield plays the most intricate and complex jazz scales on his Ibanez guitar. His pianist often plays on a synthesizer that allows him to emulate the smooth sounds of the Fender Rhodes and the funky sounds of the Hammond organ. John Scofield is also known to play in dissonant and ominous sounding scales that are reminiscent of hard bop jazz songs to the likes of Thelonious Monk. Scofield also uses slight distortion on some of his songs to give more of an edge to the blues and rock influenced songs he plays.

John Scofield’s shows are always engaging because you never know what style of music he will play next. At one moment he will be playing a traditional sounding jazz song, and the next moment he will be shredding away some funky riffs on the guitar. He and his band members have great communication on stage, knowing exactly when to jump into the performance to play a solo on their instrument. John Scofield’s setlist is very interesting and diverse. He will be sure to include some of his best originals such as “Green Tea”, but he might also incorporate some old traditional songs like “Motherless Child” or he might play the R&B, rock and roll song “Let the Good Times Roll”.

Whatever style of jazz music John Scofield ends up playing, he will be sure to play it with perfect precision and deep inspiration.

Ohio jazz-rock guitarist John Scofield has worked with so many legends over his long career it is impossible to count yet so you grasp some kind of idea of the man's credibility, he has collaborated with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Mavis Staples, Dave Liebman and Joe Henderson to name a few since he appeared on the circuit in the 70s. The musician is considered one of America's most iconic guitarists and an influencer of numerous genres as his own sounds cross jazz fusion, funk, blues, soul and rock so as expected his tours continuously sell out.

He has released so many albums over the years so he has to be ruthless when deciding on his setlist yet he makes some great decisions tonight as he splits the set between his technical best and the fan favourites. There are great moments of ripping guitar solos that have the crowds clapping and cheering on Scofield, or Sco as he is affectionately known. There are then major singalong for the early track 'Endless Summer'. It is a great evening in the company of a truly legendary musician.

John Scofield is an outstanding artist and his concert in Paris yesterday night was yet another demonstration of that. His music is filled with emotion, intelligence and sensitivity. His solos are like fairytales. They take you into magical worlds that you had not imagined. Thank you for the joy that you have shared without counting.

His band mates were right there alongside in terms of inspiration with Avi Bortnick showing great dexterity and groove in the samples and rhythm guitar, Andy Hess 'holding it together' on the bass and

Dennis Chambers setting a solid beat on drums.

Super evening !

Scofield at Vienna's Porgy & Bess on May 2, 2019. What an unbelievably good show! It's basically a bebop set, with a few groovier bits thrown in. Scofield played his (usual) best: thoughtful, original, but never over the top. And the band is one to match him, especially Gerald Clayton on keys and Bill Stewart on drums were on fire that night. Most enjoyable concert of the year so far.

John Scofield was great, but he could had played longer than one hour. I wish that he would have brought more musicians with him. The organ player was fantastic so was the upright bass player and Drummer was on point. I think if he would add at a ribbon guitar player With him he could have played more upbeat tunes.

draino.fd’s profile image

Wow... super great. He was fantastic.. a pity he didn't bring his Telecaster but his Ibanez :). As this was a concert to promote his last album "country for old man" a little more twang is always good. He played without any effects, directly straight through the amp. Amazing how much dynamics he puts in his playing.

As usual, Sco' delivers a soulfully satisfying blend of Jazz, Funk & bluesy guitar in a set helped out by John Medeski, Billy Martin & Tony Sherr. Great lineuo. Yay!

Original show description below.

Guitar great John Scofield begins his week of concerts with a solo performance, echoing the magical Sacred Space solo concert he gave at Grace Cathedral during the 2011 SFJAZZ Spring Season.

In an extraordinary five-decade career marked by stylistic zigs and zags, Scofield has been impossible to pigeonhole. He’s collaborated on era-defining recordings by Charles Mingus and Miles Davis, and released some four-dozen albums drawing on a diverse array of idioms, from post-bop, fusion, and jazz/funk to soul jazz, country, and nu-groove.

Through all of his various projects there’s one fertile but forbidding field into which the three-time GRAMMY Award-winner has rarely ventured. Scofield has never recorded a solo guitar album, and almost never plays solo recitals, making this concert an all too rare opportunity to experience a jazz master in this most distilled and demanding setting. As a player known for his judicious use of space and instantly recognizable tone, he’s well equipped for conjuring drama and beauty by himself. Judging by glimpses provided on earlier recordings, like a sublime solo rendition of Thelonious Monk’s mysterious ballad “Monk’s Mood” on pianist Hal Galper’s 1980 album Ivory Forest , Sco will turn his time alone on stage into an enthralling journey.

This concert offers an all too rare opportunity to experience a jazz master in this most distilled and demanding setting.

John Scofield

New Release — Uncle John’s Band

The John Scofield Trio (John, Vicente Archer, and Bill Stewart) released their album, Uncle John’s Band , on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Named for the Grateful Dead song that concludes this inspired double album, Uncle John’s Band features guitarist John Scofield at his most freewheeling. Wide-ranging repertoire finds his trio with Vicente Archer and Bill Stewart tackling material from Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” to Neil Young’s “Old Man”, from Leonard Bernstein’s “Somewhere” to the Miles Davis Birth of the Cool classic “Budo.”  Jazz standards, including “Stairway to the Stars” and “Ray’s Idea,” rub shoulders with seven Scofield originals that are variously swing, funk, and folk-inflected.

Uncle John’s Band was recorded at Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, New York, in August 2022.

CNR Student Ambassadors Shine

Cnr student ambassadors welcome prospective students .

Among the many student groups housed by the College of Natural Resources (CNR) , student ambassadors make the college feel like home to incoming CNR students. They play a pivotal role in recruiting events and in preparing personalized mailing materials for each prospective student.

CNR student ambassadors attend recruitment and outreach events such as UIdaho Bound, in addition to career and job fairs.

Having the opportunity to show prospective students they can do what makes them happy at work and still make a living is so important. Abby Evans, sophomore ambassador

When they are not talking with students or families about U of I’s natural resources programs, they are working hard behind the scenes, preparing welcome packets and handwriting letters to accepted students.

Being an ambassador allows students to learn and practice transferable skills necessary for higher education or industry careers.

A man stands behind a table covered with University of Idaho CNR swag and pamphlets.

Current ambassador John Maes, a senior studying Forestry  and Fire Ecology and Management , reflects on the tight-knit community the ambassadors have established, which includes sharing tasks and representing CNR.

“When things need to be done, everyone takes responsibility to come together and get things done,” he said.

Zoie Harvey, a third-year student ambassador studying Environmental Science , with an emphasis in Policy Planning and Management, also stressed the importance of working as a team.

“Relying on a team, we have multiple people with different strengths, especially with their different majors and areas of knowledge,” she said.

The student ambassadors also work with various employees, encouraging collaboration and creating opportunities for students to flourish with mentorship.

The communication and leadership skills the ambassadors learn throughout their experience is pivotal in preparing them for careers

Bella Canifax-Broesch, a junior studying Ecology and Conservation Biology  and a minor in Wildlife Resources, shared her passion for animal conservation outreach and education, particularly in zoos. She said the communication skills she has learned as an ambassador will allow her to convey the importance of conserving species.

Much of the communication ambassadors do involves communicating to diverse audiences. Based on their experiences, ambassadors find personal ways to connect with prospective students and their families.

Abby Evans, a sophomore studying Conservation Biology, said sharing personal experiences as CNR students helps attract new students to the college.

“I was questioning what I wanted to do in college and what I might be happy in,” she said. “Having the opportunity to show prospective students they can do what makes them happy at work and still make a living is so important.”

A line of students stands in a building.

Student ambassadors also extend their influence beyond the borders of U of I’s Moscow campus. They have participated in outreach and recruitment events in Sacramento, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada, in addition to other events across Idaho.

Working as an ambassador has also taught the students about the value of getting involved.

“I learned it’s important to put myself out there and seize the opportunities that are in front of me to explore new boundaries,” said Gabriel Donahue, a junior studying Integrated Environmental Sciences.

In addition to being able to pass down the knowledge they have absorbed while at CNR, ambassadors are ultimately thankful for the opportunity to give back to the college. Many of them received handwritten letters from past student ambassadors when they were accepted into U of I. Writing these letters to the next generation of CNR students is a full circle moment for them.

“I get to give back and pass on the spirit of the Vandal family,” Gabriel said.
