Kelsea Ballerini: “When I sing the crowd goes feral, it's so much fun”

kelsea ballerini tour vancouver

By Daphne Bugler

Kelsea Ballerini “When I sing the crowd goes feral it's so much fun”

Heartbreak is not exactly uncharted territory in songwriting. But it's still rare that music lands as poignantly as Kelsea Ballerini's EP Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, especially given she never expected to perform the songs. Before their release, Ballerini was ready to give just one interview before she put that era of her life — and the songs that came from it — to bed.

Two weeks later and she’s performing them for the first time while on tour in the UK, to a crowd that seems to know every word. The songs have gone viral, the album has exploded, Saturday Night Live is booked and she’s found a new audience seemingly overnight. Ballerini has managed to turn one of the most painful moments in her life into something that’s connected with millions.

Over Zoom from from Detroit, where she is finishing up the Canadian leg of her tour before heading back south, GQ took a moment to look back at where she began. Here, we chat through all her formative firsts.

The first time you were starstruck?

In 2013, in a never-ending line to meet Taylor Swift . I remember my cheeks got so hot when I finally walked up to her and was like, “Hi, my name’s Kelsea and I write songs too, and I want to move to Nashville.” She was really lovely, which was really kind in a fourteen-hour meet and greet.

First song you’re excited to sing on this tour?

“If You Go Down I’m Going Down Too”, because it’s where I beg the crowd to be unhinged with me. When I sing the line, “Hypothetically, do you ever kill your husband?”, we just go feral and it's so much fun.

First celebrity crush?

The Jonas Brothers. Camp Rock era, nothing beats it.

Do you remember the first time you got drunk?

My mum let me do champagne tasting with her. When you’ve never drunk and your first drink is champagne, the bubbles go straight to the bloodstream. I was really feeling it and the next morning I woke up and there was guacamole all over my room. Apparently, I tipsy-walked down to the fridge, got some guacamole, ate it in bed, and then didn’t put the lid on.

First album you ever bought?

The first time I remember going to a Walmart and buying music I got four albums: the debut Taylor Swift, Wide Open Spaces by The Chicks, Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing by Keith Urban and Enjoy the Ride by Sugarland.

First time you played one of your songs and it really connected with your fans?

I was in Detroit opening for Rascal Flatts and it was the week that “Peter Pan” was the number one song in country music. It hit me and I got on the ground and was just sobbing. I put my microphone out and the crowd sang the whole song for me.

The first thing you want to achieve in 2023?

I want to finish a book. Something I need to take a little swan dive into.

First time you got stage fright? Do you still get it?

If you look at a lot of my awards show performances, I get chicken skin because I just get so cold. It’s my body’s way of shutting down. So, I’ve been trying to learn how to system override that. We’ll see.

First piece of fake news you read about yourself?

I remember the first time I played my song “Dibs” on morning TV and I had on these really tight pink shorts. I saw an article pop up and it said ‘Ballerini debuts baby bump’. It hit every insecurity that I had about my body and that I’d struggled with for years. That was rough.

First person you call when you’re in trouble?

My best friend. We have put each other to the test.

First thing you’d save if your house was on fire?

I’d grab my dog, guitar, and my box of letters and I’d stop, drop and roll right out of there.

Kelsea Ballerini joins the call wearing a sweet smile punctuated with a bold red lip.

Her blond hair cut into a stylish bob, the American pop-country singer and songwriter shares that she’s calling in from her now-hometown of Nashville, Tenn., otherwise known as the Country Music Capital of the World.

It’s a fitting location given that the If You Go Down and Peter Pan singer has become a mainstay on country music radio — and in beauty ads thanks to her role as an ambassador for the brand COVERGIRL, a title that she’s held since 2022.

“I’m a girlie-girl, to my core,” Ballerini shares of her makeup style. “Even before I was allowed to wear it out of the house, I was wearing it in the house. And obviously, now, I get to play with it in all kinds of ways, which is so fun.”

That predilection for playing with cosmetics undoubtedly made Ballerini a perfect fit for the brand’s ‘easy, breezy’ approach to beauty.

“ COVERGIRL was something that was on my bucket list,” Ballerini says of her role as an ambassador, which sees her join other bold-name stars such as Queen Latifah and America Ferrera as faces of the makeup brand. “I think it’s just because, as a kid growing up in east Tennessee, my first experiences with makeup was my mom bringing me to a Walgreens or a CVS and being like, ‘OK, you can pick out one thing.’ And I always remember seeing the commercials and in the magazines ‘Easy, Breezy, Beautiful, COVERGIRL.’ It felt approachable. And it felt like it was for everyone.”

Noting that her outlook on makeup has “evolved so much” over the years, Ballerini now looks back and laughs at some of her early cosmetic creations.

“I think, when you’re first allowed to wear makeup, you just go for it. I see pictures of myself in high school and I’m like, ‘Oh, I really just did one of everything.’ And you have to have that phase. And it’s fun,” Ballerini says. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve worked with professionals who have really taught me so much about the art of makeup.

“And just my personal preference has changed a lot. Now, some days, I’m like less is more. And I’m fine to walk out of the house with nothing on my face. And, some days, I really like to look like I rolled around in glitter. It just depends.”

That open, anything-goes approach to beauty is a beloved aspect of makeover, overall, she admits.

“I think that’s the beauty of it,” Ballerini says. “It’s self-expression. It’s allowed to evolve with you.”

Narrowing in on the topic of glitter, Ballerini revealed her new product collaboration with COVERGIRL, the Exhibitionist x Kelsea Ballerini Liquid Glitter .

Set to launch in Canada on Dec. 7, the ultra-pigmented glitter liquid eyeshadow formula ($13.99 at mass retailers) is perfectly timed to hit stores for the busy holiday season.

“Christmas, new year’s, parties. All that kind of stuff,” Ballerini says of the places to wear these pop-of-sparkle shades. “It’s the season to glitter.”

Featuring five shades ranging from a soft champagne to a bold burgundy berry, each one hand-picked by Ballerini herself — “I got my hands dirty with glitter,” she shares with a laugh — the country music superstar assures skeptics that the sparkly shadows are, indeed, for everyone.

“They’re all very easy, breezy to use. And that’s one thing that I’m excited about,” Ballerini says. “ With glitter, sometimes it feels like it’s amplified and not as easy to use. But that’s not the case. And that’s something that I really wanted to be a part of with this collaboration.

“I don’t believe in makeup being age-oriented. Or gender-oriented. Or any of that. I truly feel like it is for everyone. Whatever makes you feel good, you should wear. Especially with glitter. You can’t have a bad day if you have glitter on your face.”

As for how the singer-songwriter will be sporting these sparkling shadows this holiday season, she pointed to a few combinations, singling out one very, merry, must-try look.

“I did one shade, which is called Glitter Up, a play on Giddy Up. I would do this with one swipe of mascara and a red lip,” she says of the hue. “But I think it’s fun to experiment and play with all the colours.”

Ballerini’s three must-have beauty products

Meet the three most-used — and much-loved — beauty products and tools in the chart-topping singer’s makeup kit. Otherwise known as the “things that I swear by,” Ballerini dishes:

No. 1: An ice roller

“I also travel for a living, so I feel like I’m always puffy. But that is one of my go-tos,” she says.

No. 2: Under-eye patches

“A, because they de-puff and, B, because you can use them as a stencil for your makeup — two in one.” she says.

No. 3: Yummy Gloss from COVERGIRL

“It reminds me of middle school where everything is just so juicy and yummy. It’s always in my purse,” Ballerini says.

Kelsea Ballerini Set to Embark on Fall 2022 Heartfirst Tour

by Tina Benitez-Eves July 23, 2022, 11:54 am

Kelsea Ballerini is set to play 10 intimate shows on her upcoming Heartfirst Tour , beginning on September 24 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and closing in Los Angeles at the Greek Theatre on October 6.

Videos by American Songwriter

The exclusive dates are the first to support Ballerini’s upcoming fourth album, Subject to Change , out September 23, a follow-up to her 2020 releases Kelsea and Ballerini , with the title of the tour pulled from a track off the new album.

Giving a glimpse into the music on Subject to Change —featuring Ballerini on the album cover in a yellow dress set to a blue, sky-like background—has already released the singles “ Love is a Cowboy ” and “Heartfirst.”

Produced by Shane McAnally (Kacey Musgraves, Kenny Chesney) and Julian Bunetta (Harry Styles, Maroon 5) with select tracks co-produced by Alysa Vanderheym and Jesse Frasure, Ballerini is credited as the co-writer of all 15 songs on the album, and is the sole writer of the 14th track “Marilyn.”

Ballerini shared a video preview, elaborating more on the new album and the songs. “In my younger years, the idea of change scared me,” said the singer in the video. “It had proven to be a faceless force that had patterned my past with uncertainty. Only in the gift of growth have I learned that that stark and constant juxtaposition of life, living happens. That when I unclench my fists, un-dig my heels, and unravel the architecture built by youth, a true metamorphosis can happen.”

She added, “This is a season of becoming, healing, loving, dancing and feeling, and like everything, it is subject to change.”

Subject to Change Tracklist

1. “Subject to Change” 2. “The Little Things” 3. “I Can’t Help Myself” 4. “If You Got Down (I’m Goin’ Down Too)” 5. “Love Is a Cowboy” 6. “Muscle Memory” 7. “I Guess They Call It Fallin'” 8. “Weather” 9. “Universe” 10. “Walk in the Park” 11. “Heartfirst” 12. “You’re Drunk, Go Home” 13. “Doin’ My Best” 14. “Marilyn” 15. “What I Have”

How Kelsea Ballerini Has Grown Into an Arena-Level Touring Artist

kelsea ballerini tour vancouver

With her latest string of albums, including her intensely vulnerable and current CMA album of the year-nominated Rolling Up the Welcome Mat EP, singer-songwriter and five-time Billboard Country Airplay chart-topper Kelsea Ballerini has steadily been leveling up, both creatively and professionally.

This week, Ballerini not only made her debut performance on the VMAs, but also appeared on the cover of TIME , and stepped up in the touring space, selling out her very first headlining arena show, set for Nov. 2 in her hometown of Knoxville, Tenn. at the Thompson-Boling Arena. The show will crown a year that has seen Ballerini headline a slate of theaters on her HEARTFIRST Tour, perform songs from Rolling Up the Welcome Mat on Saturday Night Live , offer a powerful, statement-making performance on the CMT Music Awards, release a short film around her EP, and play the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, which she is set to perform later this month.

And Ballerini’s latest standout touring moment earns Sandbox Entertainment Group’s head of global touring Leslie Cohea the title of Billboard ‘s Executive of the Week .

Here, Cohea discusses Ballerini’s upcoming hometown arena show, how touring has shifted since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and country music’s ascendance in international touring.

This week, Kelsea Ballerini sold out the first headlining arena tour date of her career in Knoxville. What key decisions did you make to help make that happen?

Last year, I put a plan together for Kelsea’s then-upcoming 2023 headlining tour. She had not done a headline tour since before the pandemic and I knew that it had to be thoughtful and impactful for her fans. We decided to play all the right rooms, not skipping any steps, only announcing around 15 shows for the HEARTFIRST tour. Once those sold out, she announced the next 15 shows. With her EP coming out and having the huge success it did, the next shows sold out immediately. Her momentum kept building and building and any show we put on sale sold out. That’s when Kelsea and I talked about having one last massive play to cap off such a successful year. She is absolutely going to play arenas in the future, but I wanted to have one big moment to really show the growth of Kelsea as a touring artist.

The obvious choice was Knoxville since it is her hometown, and she has always wanted to play Thompson-Boling Arena. I had the idea for the show to be over the University of Tennessee homecoming weekend and call it Kelsea’s “homecoming” as well. It’s only right that her first sellout show is in Knoxville. When we announced the show last week, I knew we had a short window to sell tickets being that the show is on Nov. 2. I really wanted this show to stand out as a special event and get people excited. I think everything we did to market the announce really helped drive that. It was really special to see it sell out minutes after going on sale. This is by far Kelsea’s biggest show to date, doubling — almost tripling — the capacities she has played this year.

How will this show be different in terms of production, lighting, etc., since this will be scaling up in venue size?

Kelsea has empowered her entire team to up the ante on production for this show. We had a great HEARTFIRST tour production, but it was simply not scaled for arenas. Building out the production for this Homecoming show is where Kelsea, her touring team and I get to have a little fun. We are adding more lights, sound and video while creating a few special surprises along the way. Every fan will leave this show fully understanding why Kelsea Ballerini is a superstar.

Looking ahead to 2024, how do you foresee her touring growing and evolving?

Kelsea continues to grow and evolve in all areas, including writing, recording and touring. The connection she has built with her fans is truly mesmerizing and it’s something that has become so powerful at her live shows. They feel connected to her more than they ever have, especially after the release of Rolling Up The Welcome Mat . And based on what we just witnessed with the sell out at Thompson-Boling Arena, there is absolutely an arena tour in Kelsea’s future.

Daniel Prakopcyk*

Earlier this year, Kelsea also made headlines after she was hit by a bracelet while on stage, part of a strange trend of fans throwing things at artists on stage. Is there anything that the team has changed to help keep things safe on tour?

Every artist and their team want to create the safest environment possible. Since the bracelet incident, tour security works directly with the venue to make sure we have all eyes watching the people closest to the stage. I also think the fans attending are holding other fans accountable. An artist is vulnerable enough on stage, disrupting a show by launching something at the artist ruins the moment for every person on, in front of, and behind the stage.

How has touring changed overall since the pandemic?

The thing I have noticed lately is the volume of shows in every size room in every market. Right now, there are so many tours going back out and making up for the lost time and revenue. This is how we at Sandbox really came up with the “less is more” idea to only announce 15 shows for Kelsea. We want fans to feel the urgency to buy the tickets as soon as they go on sale. We are seeing people waiting to buy closer to the show. They don’t want to make the commitment too soon.

Kelsea just made her debut VMAs performance and was on the cover of TIME . How has the Sandbox team overall worked toward her increased recognition in the mainstream, while still staying very connected within the country music genre?

Two words: Jason Owen . Jason is our fearless leader at Sandbox, but he empowers all of us to lead, to innovate and to push boundaries. Our digital team at Sandbox always has their fingers on the pulse of what’s connecting in the marketplace. Their knowledge and insight into how we communicate with fans is unmatched. And CAA has played a very integral role in helping us elevate Kelsea’s stature across touring and film and television. Rick Roskin and his team are incredibly powerful partners.

Country music is having a moment not only in terms of success on the all-genre Hot 100 chart, but in terms of international touring. To what factors do you attribute this moment?

There are a lot of factors that contribute to this, from streaming to labels pushing more for international exposure and touring becoming a more common experience for country artists all over Europe and the U.K. It was hard to convince an arena-level artist years ago to go play clubs across the U.K. in order to help grow their international fan base. It had to feel like going backwards almost. In the last 10 years, the next generation of country artists really started investing in growing their touring careers abroad. They could do it alongside their touring career in the states as well. C2C and other newer country festivals have also really helped shine a light on country music and have allowed the ability to get exposure in places like London and Dublin.

Kelsea Ballerini at The Stage AE

Stage ae, pittsburgh, pennsylvania.

Country-pop superstar Kelsea Ballerini is all-out, putting her 'heart first as she reveals new tour dates for the second leg of her HEARTFIRST Tour this March. The new set of tour dates will wrap up at Stage AE on Saturday, 18th of March 2023. In support of her newest album, Subject to Change, Ballerini is set to serve alluring performances of her biggest hits and share her new material live on stage. The Grammy-nominated "Heartfirst" singer is set to conquer the stage as she explores changes in life. What won't change is how she definitely puts her 'heart first in everything. Don't miss out on Kelsea Ballerini's finale of this leg of the HEARTFIRST Tour by booking your tickets now!

Breaking through the mainstream scene strong with her RIAA Certified-Platinum debut single "Love Me Like You Mean It" in 2014, Kelsea Ballerini quickly became a global favorite in the country-pop genre. The woman served a slew of hit singles, four studio albums, and various awards and recognition including five Grammy nominations.

From church and school choirs, and writing her first song at 12, Ballerini became a global sensation for her heartfelt hits such as "Dibs", "Peter Pan", "Miss Me More", "Hole in the Bottle", "Legends", and "Heartfirst".

At the time of her debut album release, Kelsea Ballerini found herself in the spotlight as every single off of "The First Time" found itself charting at the top of the Country Airplay charts. She was the first solo female artist in the country genre to score a #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart with a debut single since Carrie Underwood did with "Jesus Take the Wheel". She's also the fifth solo female country music artist to have back-to-back #1 hits through her second single "Dibs". The album's third single "Peter Pan" also hit #1 on the same chart.

With a successful debut, Ballerini amassed a large following for her country-pop anthems. Now on her fourth studio record, Ballerini took to heart life lessons she faced along the way. As a follow-up to her RIAA Certified-Gold record "Kelsea" in 2020, her new album "Subject to Change" explores forces that led to change and shape her life.

"In my younger years, the idea of change scared me. It had proven to be a faceless force that patterned my past with uncertainty," she shared on Instagram, announcing her new album.

Rather than fighting or going against forces that drive her to change, she now finds "blissful acceptance in the cracks I once cursed but now let the light in, to grow taller within myself."

"Subject to Change" features her new singles "Heartfirst" and "If You Go Down (I'm Goin' Down Too)". Having explored her journey into the spotlight of country-pop anthems, Ballerini took to heart what changed, and took her time to get inspiration from the music she grew up listening to. "Instead of listening to new releases, I listened to the music I grew up on, and that’s the influence for this record," she shared. "Really organic-sounding records."

Beyond her new music, Ballerini also previously released her first poetry book "Feel Your Way Through". It featured vulnerable tales of struggles and healing. "I credit a lot of the openness and the more poetic side of the songwriting to the book," she shared.

As Kelsea Ballerini takes her newfound strength and lyrical tales to the live stage on the second leg of her HEARTFIRST Tour, make sure you don't miss out on this chance to catch her performing her biggest hits and new masterpieces on the big stage by booking your tickets now!

Met Gala 2024 after parties see Shakira, Kelsea Ballerini ditching gowns for stripped down styles

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Stars wowed at the 2024 Met Gala on the first Monday of May as they walked the famous steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The theme was "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," with a dress code of "The Garden of Time" inspired by J.G. Ballard's story of the same name. After appearing on theme for the event, many stars opted for different looks for the after parties.

Zendaya wore a total of four different looks for the night, wowing onlookers first with a peacock blue gown and headpiece, followed by a black gown with a lengthy train and massive floral headpiece.

Inside, Zendaya switched to a plunging white V-neck gown studded with glitter, before switching to her final look of the night, a steely blue halter gown.

MET GALA 2024: RED CARPET ARRIVALS

Shakira went from a fiery red gown on the carpet to a white barely-there dress with major cutouts and a flowing train.

At Stella McCartney's star-studded after party, Shakira joined Matt Damon, his wife Luciana Damon, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne and Penelope Cruz for a group photo.

"Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney kept her black bob, but switched from her pale blue ball gown into a brown handkerchief top and matching pencil skirt.

Cardi B switched it up from a voluminous black gown – with a train that nearly swallowed the carpet and a tall head wrap – to a sleek red old-Hollywood look for the party she co-hosted with the brand, FWRD.

Kendall Jenner wore two different after-party looks, both white, in stark contrast to her dark Givenchy gown.

In one of her post-gala looks, she wore an ivory lace mini dress with matching heels. Her second ensemble featured a bright white corset bodice with wings, complimented by a flowing high-low skirt.

Rita Ora and Doja Cat pushed their already bold looks from the night even further for the after parties.

Ora swapped her beaded curtain gown for a mermaid-esque look, with a completely sheer top and large floral piece with beaded accents just covering her lower half, all paired with a white fur coat and wet hair.

Doja Cat swapped her own dripping wet red carpet look for a completely sheer body stocking look at nightclub tycoon Richie Akiva's birthday party.

The rapper also took a photo with singer Janelle Monae, who wore a wild, googly-eyed dress for the after party.

Kelsea Ballerini changed up her date night look with boyfriend Chase Stokes from a flowing, floral gown to a simple tan two-piece paired with an oversize blazer.

Lana Del Rey wore a similarly ethereal woodland gown for the ApresMet2 after party, but changed it up with a veil on the back of her hair, and lighter floral embroidery on the dress's bodice.

The "Born to Die" singer was also spotted hanging with Jaden Smith at the ApresMet2 party.

Lizzo went from her structured beige floral look, complete with unusual neckpiece, to a vibrant pink body suit.

She was joined by pal SZA as they attended the Casa Cipriani party.

Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes' Daring 2024 Met Gala Looks Are Proof Opposites Attract

Kelsea ballerini and chase stokes looked like the perfect pair at the 2024 met gala while wearing completely opposing looks as they arrived on the red carpet..

Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes finally know what this feeling is like.

After all, the couple made their Met Gala debut on the red carpet at the 2024 fashion event May 6 looking like the perfect pair—despite opting for looks with totally different vibes. ( See more stars who posed on the red carpet here. )

The "Penthouse" singer arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a nude mesh Michael Kors gown, adorned with hundreds of gorgeous pink and orange flowers. She accessorized the colorful look by adding some flowers to her messy updo, as well as a matching floral jewelry set adorned with diamonds and sapphires by Simon G. She finished the look with smokey eye makeup by Kelsey Deenihan .

As for Chase, the Outer Banks star opted for a much darker ensemble, rocking a black Michael Kors sequin suit with nothing underneath except for five long chains and two over-sized cross pendants by Loree Rodkin. He paired the look with black dress shoes and a wet-effect gelled hairstyle.

And it's no surprise the couple, who've continued to navigate their long-distance relationship, shined. After all, Kelsea and Chase found their rhythm when it comes to spending time together, especially at soirées like this.

"We've been really fortunate in this recent chapter that our busy seasons have not overlapped," Chase told E! News in March . "So, [Kelsea will] either be here or I'll go to Nashville, which has made it really nice. In the future and as we've continued to grow in our relationship, we just try to make sure our schedules can coexist and we have time."

It's a sentiment the "If I Go Down" singer couldn't agree with more. "We both have big lives," she explained to E! News  last month. "We're both trying to weave through it together and give each other space to thrive and grow in this season."
