You will also need to fill out a form provided by your flight attendants and undergo another COVID-19 test on arrival, after passing passport control. It's like an official permission from the Russian government for your visit, whether it's for holidays, business, or work. Just remember, the kind of visa you need depends on why you're going!

Yes, Indian citizens are required to obtain a visa to enter Russia. There are different types of Russia visas available, each suited for a specific purpose of travel.

Unfortunately, there's no visa on arrival option available for Indian citizens. You'll need to apply for a visa beforehand through the regular process mentioned earlier. Ensure you apply well ahead of your travel date to avoid any last-minute hiccups.

If you're an Indian citizen planning a trip to Russia, obtaining the appropriate visa is crucial. Here's a breakdown of the most common visa types for Indians travelling to Russia:

Tourist Visa (Single-Entry/Double-Entry/Multiple-Entry):

  • Ideal for sightseeing, visiting family or friends, or participating in tourist activities.
  • Validity typically ranges from single entry to multiple entries, with a maximum stay duration of up to 60 days per visit.
  • Requires a letter of invitation from a travel agency or hotel (for some types) and proof of accommodation and financial support.

Business Visa:

This visa is for business travel activities such as attending conferences, negotiating contracts, or conducting market research.

  • Facilitates business activities like attending meetings, conferences, or negotiating contracts.
  • Can be single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry with varying validity periods.
  • Requires an official letter of invitation from a Russian business entity and documentation related to your business purpose.

These visas are for temporary or permanent work in Russia. You will need a job offer from a Russian employer to apply for a work visa.

  • Necessary for employment purposes in Russia.
  • The application process can be complex and involves obtaining a work permit from the Russian employer beforehand.
  • Validity and entry details depend on the specific job and employment contract.

Private Visa:

  • Issued for private visits to meet family or friends residing in Russia.
  • Typically single-entry with a maximum stay duration of 90 days.
  • Requires a letter of invitation from the host in Russia, along with proof of their residency and your relationship.

Education Visa:

  • This visa allows you to enter a foreign country specifically to pursue full-time studies at an accredited educational institution.
  • The validity period of an education visa typically aligns with the duration of your academic program, with potential options for renewals.

Transit Visa:

  • This visa allows you to pass through a country (usually by air) with the intention of traveling to a different final destination.
  • Transit visas are typically valid for a short period, often just a few hours or up to 24 hours, depending on the specific regulations.

Other Visa Types:

There are other types of visas available for specific purposes, such as medical treatment or cultural exchange programs.

For Indian citizens planning a trip to Russia, understanding the visa application procedure is crucial. Here's a concise guide to help you through the process:

Choose Your Visa Type: Identify the visa category that best aligns with your reason for traveling to Russia.

Complete the Online Application Form: While Russia is moving towards online applications, some applications might still require filling out a paper form. Check with the Russian embassy or consulate in India for the latest updates.

Schedule an Interview Appointment: Once you submit the application form and supporting documents, schedule an interview appointment at a Russian embassy or consulate in India.

Pay the Visa Application Fee: There are separate fees for processing the visa application and the interview. You will need to pay both fees before your interview.

Collect Required Documents: Gather all the documents required for your specific visa type. These documents may include your passport (valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Russia), a recent passport-sized photograph, proof of financial support, and an invitation letter from a host in Russia (if applicable for a Private Visa).

Attend the Interview: Go to your scheduled interview at the Russian embassy or consulate. Be prepared to answer questions about your visa application and your travel plans.

Wait for a Decision: After your interview, the visa officer will decide on your application. You will be informed of the decision by email or phone.

Receive Your Visa (if approved): If your visa is approved, you will receive your passport with the visa stamped inside.

Here are some additional tips for applying for a Russia visa from India :

Plan Ahead: Start planning your visa application well before your travel date. Processing times can vary, so give yourself plenty of time.

Be Ready for Fees: Remember, visa application fees are non-refundable, even if your application is denied. Know the costs upfront before starting the process.

Collect Your Docs: Carefully gather all needed documents, making sure they're complete and valid. Incomplete papers can slow your application or cause rejection.

Honesty is Best: Be truthful in your application and during your interview. Misleading information can lead to serious consequences.

Dress Well, Be Punctual: Dress nicely and be on time for your interview appointment. Professionalism matters!

While requirements can vary slightly depending on the visa type, some general documents are common for most applicants:

Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Russia and have at least two blank pages for visa stamping.

Completed Visa Application Form: The format might be online or paper-based depending on the latest

Visa Application Fee: You'll need to pay separate fees for processing the application and the interview. These fees are non-refundable.

Interview Appointment:   After submitting the application and documents, schedule an interview at a Russian embassy or consulate in India.

Proof of Purpose and Ties to India:

Documentation for your trip: Depending on the visa type, this might include flight tickets, a detailed itinerary, or a letter of invitation from a Russian host (required for a Private Visa).

Proof of financial support: You'll need to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your stay in Russia. This could include bank statements, income tax returns, or a sponsor's letter of support.

Evidence of ties to India: This demonstrates your intent to return to India after your Russia visit. Examples include employment documentation, property ownership, or family ties in India.

Additional Requirements (may vary by visa type) :

Work Visa: A valid job offer letter from a Russian employer.

Education Visa: Proof of acceptance from a Russian educational institution and financial support for your studies.

Transit Visa: Proof of onward travel and a visa for your final destination (if required).

Currently, Russia does not offer an electronic visa (e-visa) option for Indian citizens. The visa application process for Indian applicants is entirely traditional and requires going through the Russian embassy or consulate in India.

Russia visa fees consist of separate charges for application processing and the interview. The cost varies depending on the visa category and processing speed you choose (standard or expedited). Here's a general structure:

Visa Application Fee: This covers processing your application. The amount varies depending on the specific visa category.

Visa Interview Fee: This covers the cost of the interview with a Russian visa officer.

Additional Notes:

  • Some visa categories may have other associated fees, such as medical examination costs (if applicable). These fees are typically not included in the visa application or interview fee.

Processing times for a Russia visa for Indian citizens can vary depending on several factors, typically ranging from 4 to 8 weeks. Here's a breakdown of some key influences:

Visa Category: Tourist visas might be processed faster compared to work visas or student visas that involve additional scrutiny.

Workload at Embassy/Consulate: Locations with higher application volumes may have longer wait times.

Seasonality: Application volume typically increases during peak travel seasons, leading to longer processing times.

Administrative Processing: In some cases, your application may require additional checks, which can significantly extend the waiting period.

Renewing a Russian visa involves applying for a new visa before your current one expires. Here's a general guide:

Check Eligibility: Renewal might be simplified if you meet specific criteria (e.g., your current visa is still valid or expired within the past year, and you're applying for the same visa category). However, consult the Russian embassy or consulate in India for the latest eligibility requirements and the renewal process. They might outline situations where a fresh application is required instead of a renewal.

General Steps for Renewal (if applicable) :

Gather Required Documents: Collect documents like your passport, a copy of your existing visa, application form (might be online or paper-based), fresh passport photos, and proof of your travel purpose (e.g., flight tickets, hotel bookings).

Submit the Application: Submit your application package to the Russian embassy, consulate, or authorized visa center, along with the renewal fees.

Interview (if required): You might be called for an interview depending on your situation and the embassy/consulate's procedure.

Receive Your Renewed Visa (if approved): Upon successful renewal, you'll receive your passport with the new Russia visa.

There are several reasons why a Russian visa application from an Indian citizen might be rejected. Here's a breakdown of some common grounds for rejection:

- Incomplete Application or Supporting Documentation: Missing required documents or errors in the application form can lead to rejection. Ensure you submit everything accurately and completely.

- Ineligibility for the Visa Category: Applying for the wrong visa category can result in rejection. Carefully research the different visa categories and choose the one that aligns with your purpose of travel to Russia.

- Failure to Demonstrate Strong Ties to India: Russian visa officers want to ensure you have strong ties to India and will return after your visit. This could include proof of employment, property ownership, family ties, or financial obligations in India.

- Criminal Inadmissibility: A criminal record, even for minor offenses, can lead to visa rejection. Serious crimes or drug-related offenses can make you permanently ineligible for a Russia visa.

- Security Concerns: If there are any concerns about your security background or potential links to terrorism, your visa application might be rejected.

- Previous Immigration Violations: Overstaying on a previous Russia visa or violating immigration laws in Russia can significantly impact your chances of getting a visa in the future.

- Insufficient Funds: Depending on the visa category, you might need to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support your stay in Russia. Bank statements, income tax returns, or a sponsor's letter can be helpful here.

- Issues During the Interview: A poorly attended interview, vague answers to questions, inconsistencies between your application and interview statements, or a lack of confidence can raise red flags for the visa officer.

- Administrative Processing Delays: In some cases, your application may require additional administrative processing, which can lead to delays or even rejection.

Visa to Russia for citizens of India

The existence of a visa regime between the Republic of India and the Russian Federation makes it necessary to obtain a visa to Russia for Indian citizens.

An Indian citizen planning to visit the Russian Federation must obtain a Russian visa to enter the country. The type of visa is chosen depending on the purpose of the trip and the expected time of stay in the country. An Indian citizen can obtain a tourist, business, visitor, student or work visa on the basis of a relevant invitation.

An invitationis the basis for issuing a visa to Russia of any type (tourist, business, work, etc.) to an Indian citizen. Our company issues official Russian visa invitations for Indians, as well as assists in visa support and carries out consultations for Indian citizens.

How to get a visa to Russia for an Indian citizen.Russian visa requirements for Indian citizens and step by step instructions:

1.1. Tourist visa to Russia for Indian citizens:

the purpose of your trip is to visit the Russian Federation as a tourist;

the actual stay on the territory of the Russian Federation will be no more than 30 days.

Since India belongs to the list of migration risk countries, the consulate may require you to present the original tourist visa invitation. If all the documents submitted for a visa are in order, it will be issued to an Indian citizen for the period of time specified in the invitation, not exceeding 30 days. Tourist visas allow single, double and multiple entries.

1.2. Business visa to Russia for Indian citizens:

the purpose of your trip is business or commercial;

it is necessary to obtain a visa for a long stay from 1 month up to 1 year;

you need to get a visa for multiple entries.

In addition to business trips, such visa is suitable for a longer (up to 90 days) continuous stay in Russia. A business visa is well suited for a continuous stay in Russia for up to 180 days at a time.

Business visas allow single, double or multiple entries. Business visas issued to citizens of India can be valid for up to 1 year.

To obtain a business visa, a business visa invitation to Russia is required. We offer different types of business visa invitationsfor Indians:

Letter from the Russian organization

An invitation in a form of a letter from an organization is a request for a business visa to a foreigner directed to Russian consulate from an organization accredited by the GUMV of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. Such invitations are printed on the forms of the organizations themselves, so their issuance online does not take much time (about 5 minutes).

GUVM MIA form

An invitation can be issued on the letterhead of the GUMV of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation if the party interested in the arrival of an Indian citizen to Russia submits a relevant application and attaches all the necessary documents to it. It will take a longtime to issue an invitation this way, since the submitted information about the invited foreigner must be verified. If he violated the visa regime during his previous visits to Russia, then the issuance of a business visa invitation for him will be denied. If no reasons for refusal are found, then a business visa invitation will be issued in the form of an electronic direction to issue a visa. It will take from 7 to 21 business days to process.

For Indian travellers intending to visit Russia, it's best to initiate the visa application procedure as soon as your travel details and schedule are finalised. To prevent potential processing delays or denials, it's advisable to submit your visa application at least 1 week prior to your intended departure date.

Russia tourist visa validity and duration of stay on a Russian visa can vary depending on the type of visa obtained. Typically, tourist e-visas are granted for a validity period of 60 days, with a maximum stay duration of up to 16 days per visit.

It's important to carefully review the details of your visa to understand its specific validity and stay duration. Overstaying the permitted duration or violating the terms of your visa can lead to legal consequences and difficulties when attempting to exit the country or apply for future visas.

The validity period of an electronic visa and/or the allowed duration of stay may only be extended under exceptional circumstances, such as the impossibility of leaving Russian territory due to emergency medical treatment, force majeure, or natural disasters.

Extension of the e-visa and/or the permitted stay duration is handled by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation or its regional offices, based on the migrant registration location. If there's no migrant registration, the extension is processed at the actual stay location by issuing a regular (non-electronic) visa.

If you possess a valid Russian visa in your passport, there's no need to apply for a unified e-visa. You can enter the Russian Federation using the regular visa within its validity period, without the constraints of the unified e-visa. Additionally, obtaining an e-visa does not extend the validity of a regular visa.

To check the status of a Russia tourist visa for Indians, you can use the Teleport service or the official government eVisa portal. Here's how:

Using Teleport:

  • Access the Teleport Dashboard.
  • Click on 'Your Applications'.
  • Choose the application you've submitted to view the latest status update.

Via Government eVisa Portal:

If you've applied for your visa through the official government eVisa portal, follow these steps:

  • Visit the official government eVisa portal.
  • Provide your Unique Application ID and Log in to your account.
  • Navigate to your applications section and find ‘Notifications’
  • Check the status of your application from there.

Both methods provide convenient ways to stay updated on the status of your Russia tourist visa for Indian citizens.

  • Incomplete or Incorrect Documentation: If the required documents are not provided or if there are mistakes in the application forms, it can lead to a denial.
  • Travel History: Applicants with a history of visa violations or overstays in other countries may face difficulties obtaining a visa to Russia.
  • Purpose of Visit: If the purpose of the visit is not clearly stated or if it is deemed suspicious, the visa may be denied. For instance, if the applicant is unable to provide a credible reason for their visit or if the authorities suspect the visit is for illegal activities.

Upon arriving at a Russian airport, here are some essential steps to follow:

  • Prepare Travel Documents: Ensure you have your passport and a valid Russian visit visa readily available for quick verification by immigration authorities. It's recommended to carry physical printouts or have easy access to digital copies on your mobile device.
  • Understand Russia's Regulations: If you have items to declare or if your baggage requires inspection, proceed to the customs area. Familiarise yourself with Russia's Customs Regulations to take advantage of various services, duty-free shopping opportunities, and traveller facilities.
  • Unaccompanied Minor Guidelines: If you are an unaccompanied minor, remain with your designated flight attendant for safety. Upon arrival, identify your assigned adult at the destination airport to ensure a secure arrival process.

New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 AM EDT

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”
