Saudi Arabia is a lot of things: a spiritual sanctuary, a culinary haven, a beach-lover’s oasis and a cultural melting pot. And now it’s open to curious travellers who are looking for a different kind of adventure in the Middle East . From sandy desert landscapes and endless turquoise coastlines to ancient settlements and concrete jungles, there are plenty of memories to be made and extraordinary places to explore in Saudi Arabia.

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is during the winter (from November to February) when temperatures are around 22°C to 28°C and it’s comfortable enough to spend long periods of time outside. Saudi Arabia’s climate is classified as arid desert, so this means extremely hot summers (it’s not advisable to travel during this time).

Culture and customs

Saudi Arabia is a highly conservative country when it comes to social rules and there is an expectation for men and women to dress modestly like in the surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Saudi Arabia in general is influenced by Arab and Islamic culture with a core focus on faith, traditional roles and a family-orientated mindset.

Music and dance are a feature of everyday life, with traditional instruments played and dances performed at celebrations and cultural holiday festivities. Along with the thriving arts scene in Saudi Arabia, sport is huge throughout the kingdom with football (soccer) being the most popular.

History and government

Saudi Arabia shares a lot of its early history with much of the Arabian Peninsula, experiencing the rise of Islam in the 7 th century and the establishment of Muslim states in the 15 th century. However, due to its remote location and poverty, the country remained somewhat isolated from the general military and political trends from the 16th century onwards.

Fast forward to the 18 th century when the Saud dynasty (house of rulers in the 18 th and 19 th centuries) came into power, conquering much of Arabia until their defeat at the hands of the Ottoman Sultan and the Viceroy of Egypt in 1818. A second Saudi state was created by members of the Saud dynasty in 1824 but civil wars eventually ensued after succession disputes and the state fell out of Saudi hands until 1902. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia was royally decreed in 1932 and is still ruled by the monarchy, with a judicial system that's based on Islamic law (Shari'ah).

Eating and drinking

Saudi Arabian cuisine draws influences from surrounding Persian Gulf countries, but religion plays a role in culinary practices too. For instance, as per Islam, Muslims don’t eat pork or drink alcohol and other meats like lamb, beef and chicken has to be prepared in a specific way (halal).

But there are plenty of traditional meat dishes that locals love and that travellers to the country must try. Kebabs are big in Saudi Arabia and so is shwarma, both made with meat (such as chicken or lamb) that’s been roasted on a spit and served, either by itself or in pita bread as a sandwich.

Saudi Arabians also eat a lot of seafood, particularly fish and shrimp, so you’ll likely see dishes like machbous (rice with seafood) on most restaurant menus. Also be prepared to eat flat bread with every meal, followed by a selection of fruit (usually dates, watermelon and grapes) as dessert.

To wash it all down, locals love to drink coffee in the traditional Turkish way.

Geography and environment

Saudi Arabia is situated in Western Asia, bordering the Red Sea on the west, Yemen and Oman on the south, the United Arab Emirates and the Persian Gulf on the east and Iraq and Jordon on the north.

Its terrain is largely uninhabited sandy desert with frequent sand and dust storms. Saudi Arabia is rich in natural resources including petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gold and cooper, and due to the production of these materials, the country experiences a range of environmental issues such as ground, water and air pollution, as well as extreme fossil fuel usage, deforestation and desertification.

If it’s shopping you’re after, you can’t go past two of Saudi Arabia’s biggest cities: Riyadh and Jeddah. Both cities have upscale shopping centres and department stores you can easily get lost in, as well as local markets full of traditional ingredients and souvenirs.

Popular shopping locations in Riyadh for both luxury lovers and families:

  • Centria Mall
  • Kingdom Centre
  • Al Nakheel Mall
  • Granada Mall
  • Souq Makkah

Popular shopping locations in Jeddah for both bargain hunters and electronic fiends:

  • Mall of Arabia
  • Read Sea Mall
  • Jeddah International Shopping Center
  • Al Balad district
  • Gabel Street Souq

Saudi Arabia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Why is Intrepid launching a trip to Saudi Arabia now?

Saudi Arabia opened its doors to international tourism in 2019 and we know that many of our travellers are curious about visiting there. Our aim was to create a trip that would offer our customers unique and authentic experiences that have a positive impact on local communities, particularly women.

With their emphasis on local interaction and cultural insights, we felt Women’s Expeditions was our ideal first product in Saudi. We carried out firsthand research on the ground, including speaking to local people from all walks of life. As with all Women’s Expeditions, the trip creates opportunities for local female leaders and guides while also supporting women-owned and operated businesses across our supply chain.

Do I need a visa to travel to Saudi Arabia?

As a general rule, travellers will need to obtain a visa before arrival in Saudi Arabia. However, there are a range of nationals that can apply for an eVisa online to make the process as easy as possible, so you don’t need to spend time at embassy and consulate appointments. The visa application process will require you to provide information about your trip, return travel plans and accommodation details and might prompt you for bank account information and employment contracts.

Is tipping customary in Saudi Arabia?

Tipping is common in service-oriented businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and taxis, but it is not routine; but rather a way to show appreciation for good service. It is also not required if a service charge is already included in the bill. Saudis usually tip expatriate service people and individual services in hotels despite the overall service charge. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Careem usually have a built-in tip option, but you can also tip in cash if you prefer.

Tipping guides, drivers and other tourism services providers is also common and it's a way to show appreciation for their services. It's worth noting that tipping in Saudi Arabia is a cultural and personal decision, and it's always a good idea to follow the local customs and traditions, and to tip in line with your budget and satisfaction with the service received.

What’s the internet access like in Saudi Arabia?

Internet access is widely available in Saudi Arabia, and the country has a well-developed infrastructure for telecommunications. The country's internet penetration rate is quite high and most people have access to high-speed 4G and 5G internet.

The government of Saudi Arabia regulates the internet, and there are some restrictions on access to certain websites and online content, such as those related to political dissent, pornography, gambling, and other sensitive topics. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, are widely used in the country, but they are also subject to government censorship. WhatsApp is commonly used for chat but cannot be used for calls and video calls.

Will my mobile phone work in Saudi Arabia?

Mobile phone networks are widely available in Saudi Arabia and getting a local SIM card for your phone is relatively easy. Upon arrival, you can purchase a SIM card at the airport or at any of the mobile phone stores located in most major cities and towns. The process is straightforward and you will need to provide a passport or a valid ID to register your SIM card.

Can I drink the tap water in Saudi Arabia?

The water supply in the major cities and towns is treated and is safe to drink in theory, but because of older pipe-systems even many locals refrain from doing so. In some rural areas or remote regions, the water may not be treated and may not be safe to drink. It's also worth noting that in some places, the water may have a high mineral content, which can affect its taste and may not be suitable for everyone.

What is ATM access like in Saudi Arabia?

The country has a well-developed banking system, and ATMs are widely available in most cities and towns. You can find ATMs in banks, airports, shopping centres, and other public places.

Most ATMs accept international cards such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc. However, it's always good to check with your bank if your card will work in Saudi Arabia, and also to inform them of your travel plans. You should also note that ATM withdrawal limits may vary depending on the bank and the type of card you are using.

It's also common to find that some ATMs have a limit per transaction, while others have a daily limit, so you may have to withdraw money in multiple transactions.

Are all credit cards accepted in Saudi Arabia?

You can use credit or debit cards, or even international credit cards in most of the shops, restaurants and hotels in Saudi Arabia, however, it's always good to check with the specific establishment if they accept foreign cards.

It's also worth noting that Saudi Arabia was, until recently, a cash-based society, and it's always good to have some cash on hand, especially when travelling to rural or remote areas of the country where access to ATMs and other banking services may be limited.

What are the toilets like in Saudi Arabia?

Western style bathrooms are found all across the country with the same amenities and facilities you’d expect elsewhere.

What will it cost for a...?

Expect to pay on average 8AUD for cup of coffee. Sit down meals will vary from 38AUD to 123AUD per person depending on the location and type of establishment. While street food, especially in smaller towns and cities could be as little as 8-15AUD.

Is Saudi Arabia safe for female travellers?

It’s generally considered safe for female travellers to visit Saudi Arabia, whether solo or as part of a group as, o verall, the rate of crime in Saudi Arabia is low.

As with any destination, there are a few do’s and don’t’s that all travellers should follow, such as adhering to local laws, dressing appropriately in places of worship and respecting cultural traditions. However, women should behave and dress in a similar way to locals and stick to well-populated areas, especially when venturing out at nighttime.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries. Travellers should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

It's against the law to have sexual relations or live together outside of marriage.

Are there any local laws I should be aware of?

Saudi Arabia welcomes tourists – as with all destinations, travellers to the country should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries.

In general, when it comes to Saudi Arabia's laws and social rules:

  • It is illegal to preach or publicly practice a religion other than Islam.
  • Refrain from questioning religious values or public morals.
  • Don't criticise the country, its royal family or practicing religion in public (including on social media).
  • Dress modestly in public.
  • Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia.

Same-sex relationships are illegal. Saudi Arabia does not recognise or allow same-sex marriages and rights.

What should I wear in Saudi Arabia?

Travellers should be aware of the socially conservative rules when it comes to the dress code in Saudi Arabia. It is no longer a legal requirement for women to cover their hair and wear an abaya (long sleeved robe) in Saudi, but w omen should still dress modestly when out and about (especially when visiting places of worship), covering their shoulders, chest and knees, as well as wearing any loose-fitting dresses or pants.

Due to the hot climate in Saudi Arabia, pack lightweight clothing like cotton and linen, so you're not uncomfortable when you're exploring during the day.

Is Saudi Arabia LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ rights aren’t recognised in Saudi Arabia and a high degree of caution should be undertaken when travelling. Homosexuality remains illegal and carries a heavy penalty such as imprisonment and deportation.

Additionally, being transgender is not recognised in Saudi Arabia. You will not be able to enter Saudi Arabia if your passport shows 'X' in the gender field. Transgender people could also face difficulties with dress code and access to medical care.

What public holidays are celebrated in Saudi Arabia?

  • 21st April Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan)
  • 27th June Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice)
  • 23rd September (National Day)

Please note these dates may vary. See the current list of public holidays in Saudi Arabia.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Prices depend on the number of people and the level of accommodation you require, but YPT can arrange everything you need for a perfect independent tour to Saudi Arabia.

Sample Saudi Arabia Itinerary

The following Saudi Arabia itinerary is an example of our standard Saudi tour. This can be done as is, rearranged, or mixed and match, to make a bespoke Saudi Arabian vacation.

Day 1 – Riyadh

  • Arrive at your convenience into Riyadh – the capital city of Saudi Arabia with flights from the Middle East, Europe and Asia.
  • Airport transfers included
  • Dinner and overnight in Riyadh

Day 2 – Riyadh and Edge of the World

  • Breakfast at hotel and we’ll begin the day by exploring Al Masmak Fortress. Surrounded by sand, this clay and mud-brick fort is one of the most iconic landmarks of Saudi. Built in 1865, this massive fortress represents the empire. It was the site of a daring 1902 raid by Ibn Saud – during which a spear was hurled towards the main gate with such force that the head of the spear is still lodged inside.
  • We’re in walking distance to Al Zal Souq – located in the old part of the city, this market has a plethora of little shops arranged in rows along narrow streets selling carpets, gold, silver, souvenirs, antiques, traditional clothes, accessories and even furniture. Most of the shop owners here speak English and welcome good hagglers.
  • On the way we’ll pass by Deera Square – most commonly known as Chop Chop Square by foreigners. This’ll be explained to you on the site.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant for a scrumptious traditional Saudi feast
  • Drive out to the Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) – this unique spot earnt its name as it offers stunning viewpoints from the top of the 300-metre high cliffs overlooking the surrounding plains. These cliffs were forged as a result of the tectonic movement of the Arabian plate due to the spread of the Red Sea rift located 1000 kilometres to the west.
  • Return back to Riyadh for dinner in town and overnight at hotel

Day 3 – Riyadh – Ushaiger – Buraidah

  • Breakfast at the hotel and visit the National Museum of Saudi Arabia. First opened in 1999, the design of this museum was inspired by the form and colours of the sand dunes of the “Red Sands” located outside Riyadh. The museum showcases 14 pre-Islamic Arabian kingdoms that had existed in the Arabian Peninsula from 5 BC till 700 AD. It also includes a unification hall which shows the establishment of modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud after he captured Riyadh. A hand written Quran is also in display.
  • Make your way up all the way up the Kingdom Tower – a 99-story (302.3 meters) skyscraper overlooking Riyadh. It is the world’s third tallest building with a hole after the Shanghai World Financial Centre. Below is one of the most popular malls in the country where we’ll have lunch.
  • Head northwest of the city to Al Turaif – the former capital city of the Saudi dynasty from 1744 to 1818. It was also the original home of the Saudi royal family.
  • Begin our 3-and-a-half-hour journey to Buraidah – the capital of Al-Qassim region located in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula.
  • On the way, stop at Ushaiger village. Hidden within an oasis this village provides a glimpse of a much slower paced Saudi society. The springs and low-brimmed olive and palm groves encouraged Bedouins to settle here over 1500 years ago quickly transforming Ushaiger into a popular stopping point for pilgrims making their way to Mecca.
  • Walk through the labyrinth of winding alleyways, shaded pathways and timber-framed walkways, crossing between hundreds of mud houses of stunning examples of Najdi architecture with its distinctive triangular windows and ornately carved wooden doors. Some still bear the names of the families who lived there many moons ago.
  • Dinner and overnight in Buraidah.

Day 4 – Buraidah – Hail

  • You’ll begin your day early at 6:30am and head to Al Qassim Camel Market – the largest camel market in the world where tens of thousands of camels are bought and sold, along with saddles and other accessories. This is also one of the most chaotic scenes in the country, giving you a truly unique Saudi experience.
  • Continue heading 3 hours northwest to Hail – where the dream landscapes of a 1001 nights were inspired.
  • On our arrival we’ll have lunch and continue one hour to Jubbah.
  • This worldwide famous site contains some of the oldest and most outstanding carvings of the Arabian Peninsula. It was recognized in 2015 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Jubbah is host of the two most emblematic carvings in Saudi Arabia: the first one is a character dominating another smaller one. Locals say that it is the representation of an ancient king handing out justice. The second one is a chariot pulled by two horses, which was for decades the only known example but similar ones were later found in Hail and Tabuk Provinces.
  • As surprising as it sounds, the people trading frankincense, spices, and other precious goods coming from southern Arabian Peninsula did cross regularly the 350 km of sand dunes between these two main trade cities. The numerous so-called Thamudic inscriptions (more than 5000) testify of this intense frequentation by travellers.
  • Back in Hail, explore A’arif Fort – originally built in order to guard the city against enemies. However, During the Saudi rule the Fort was used for the sighting of the moon and firing the Iftar cannon during Ramadan.
  • Dinner & shisha at a popular spot with locals.
  • Overnight in Hail

Day 5 – Hail – Al Ula (Dedan – Ikma Mountain & Elephant Rock)

  • After breakfast we’ll begin our epic 4-hour drive west to Al Ula stopping for breaks and photos along the way.
  • On our arrival in Al Ula we’ll have lunch in town
  • Visit Dedan, Ikma Mountain – located in a beautiful desert landscape, the largest “open library” in Saudi Arabia sits tucked away in a remote canyon valley. It was an important way station and mercantile center on the frankincense trade route linking to Babylon, Petra and Syria. Excavations on the archeological sites here have revealed the existence of large fortified cities. These kingdoms developed their own culture including a specific language and alphabet, that resulted in a mix of Arabian traditions and strong influences from the surrounding empires.
  • Discover two exceptional tombs located 50 meters above the wadi where the ancient oasis was centered. Those are the only tombs that are decorated with two carved lions each, showing the importance of their owners, being governors or influential people.
  • Explore Elephant Rock – also known as Jabal Al Fil, the “trunk” and “body” of this monolithic red sandstone beast were carved by natural forces – millions of years of wind and water erosion. The beauty of the unrefined structure is enhanced by its surroundings of a fine-sand sea studded with rocky outcrops, many of which are equally impressive in size and shapes.
  • Enjoy your exclusive and reserved spot at a café & restaurant nearby to watch the stunning sunset.
  • Stay overnight at a nearby farm in tents (glamping), with shared facilities.

Day 6 – Al Ula – Madain Saleh (Hegra) – Medina

  • Breakfast at thehotel and head down the road to visit Madain Saleh, known as Hegra by the Nabataean people who carved its stunning tombs into the golden Quweira sandstone. This structure includes 111 tomb façades which reflect the great skills of the masons of their time. It’s said that the natural setting here must have reminded the Nabataeans of their capital, Petra, which is why they chose this location to build their second city which thrived between 1BCE – 74CE.
  • Head back into town for lunch and begin making our 3 and a half hour journey to Medina. Also known as the “enlightened city” it is the second holiest city in Islam.
  • Explore and make the most out of Medina’s nightlife
  • Dinner and overnight in Medina

Day 7 – Medina

  • Breakfast and make your way to the International Fair and Museum of the Prophet’s Biography and Islamic Civilization – conveniently located in the area of the Holy Mosque which is a fantastic opportunity for photos.
  • Walk down Qiba Street – this street connects the Holy Mosque and Qiba Mosque which both have significant importance in Islamic history as the first to house the prophet Mohammed and eventually his grave. The second was the first Mosque ever built.
  • Walk down Medina’s walking street lined with traditional shops where incredibly delicious street food is sold.
  • Head to Medina Railway Station to board the high-speed railway to Jeddah. Construction began back in 2008 and was inaugurated in 2018, this 453 kilometre long railway connects the two holy cities making travel time just under 2 hours travelling at 300km/h
  • Arrive in Jeddah and visit Al Balad which means “the town”. Founded in the 7th century, it historically served as the centre of Jeddah. The city’s defensive walls were torn down during the 1940s. Some homes have been built using only sand and seashells.
  • Al Balad is also famous for its countless delicious food vendors – here you’ll sample a local drink made of bread called “Sobia”. We’ll also drop by a well-known old bakery and try a local snack that consists of beans and pickles called “Balilah”.
  • Stop by the first hotel built in Jeddah – heavily influenced by Italian architecture, pass the first school built in Saudi Arabia and visit an art house and museum offering its unique local art collection and antiques.
  • Overnight in hotel

Day 8 – Jeddah

  • Breakfast at hotel
  • Tour concludes with airport drop-off arranged according to your flight details.

INDEPENDENT SAUDI ARABIAN TOUR EXAMPLES

We do not list all of our bespoke Saudi Arabia itineraries, but can offer some examples, such as the following which can be arranged into a personalized Saudi Arabia Tour.

  • Ancient Saudi Arabia Tour – take advantage of our independent tours which are truly unique and catered to your requirements. Enjoy Mada’in Saleh, ancient Mosques, or the magnificent architectures of ancient cities.
  • Saudi Arabia Road Trip – the sheer size of the country and its numerous natural features and UNESCO world heritage sites make it the perfect country for an epic road trip. It is the best way to experience the barren landscape and scenery.
  • Saudi Arabia Photography Tour – As the country very recently opened to tourists, this is the best time for photographers to come and explore the region while it is still off the beaten tracks. We can create a bespoke itinerary for all your media needs.
  • Camel Racing Tour – visiting a camel race is a truly unique experience. This traditional sport is truly worth seeing, so why not do it as part of a Saudi Arabian tour?
  • Journalist Tours to Saudi Arabia – We can arrange trips for journalists wishing to see and experience Saudi Arabia, arrange meetings, as well as permits for those wishing to do documentaries.

Rory mcilroy, tiger woods and adam scott join pga tour subcommittee that will negotiate with saudi arabia's public investment fund, share this article.

An AP report on Wednesday night cited Tiger Woods as the lone player on the five-person PGA Tour Transaction Subcommittee that will further the discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

After shooting a 4-under 67 to sit T-2 at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship on Thursday afternoon, Rory McIlroy refuted the report and said both he and Adam Scott were also on the seven-person subcommittee that includes Woods, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, former Tour player and current liaison Joe Ogilvie, Fenway Sports Group’s John Henry and Valero CEO Joe Gorder. The latter are also part of the Strategic Sports Group that was formed to develop PGA Tour Enterprises , the for-profit entity that was initially slated to be created by the Tour and Saudi PIF as a result of last summer’s shocking framework agreement. The subcommittee will report to the Tour board.

Earlier in the day on Wednesday, McIlroy said he wouldn’t be taking Webb Simpson’s place on the Tour’s policy board because players were “uncomfortable” with his potential return. He did, however, insist that he was still interested in helping with the PIF discussions however he was able.

McIlroy is one of few players who has a relationship with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan that dates back to 2022. Woods and the other player directors on Tour met with Al-Rumayyan back in March in the Bahamas . Said Woods of the meeting at the Masters, “I don’t know if we’re closer, but certainly we’re headed in the right direction. That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive.”

The PGA Tour’s Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis told media at the Wells Fargo Championship that there were no material updates at this point on the discussions with PIF, but if we’ve learned anything this week, there’s plenty going on behind the scenes.

Rory McIlroy Reveals That He Has a Role in PGA Tour-PIF Negotiations After All

Bob harig | 8 hours ago.

Rory McIlroy will work with Tiger Woods and others on a subcommittee to try to unify the sport.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In another twist to the ongoing saga of the PGA Tour/Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia negotiations, Rory McIlroy said Thursday at the Wells Fargo Championship that he is part of a subcommittee including Tiger Woods and commissioner Jay Monahan that is tasked with working directly on a deal.

McIlroy, who Wednesday disclosed he would not be returning as a player-director to the PGA Tour Policy Board after there had been resistance among some current board members as well governance issues with him replacing Webb Simpson, disclosed this new role after the first round at Quail Hollow.

Called the “transaction subcommittee,” the Associated Press reported Wednesday that Woods would take part along with Monahan, player liaison Joe Ogilvie, Joe Gorder, a board member from Valero Energy, and John Henry from Strategic Sports Group.

Adam Scott is also part of the committee, bringing the total to seven, which the PGA Tour confirmed.

“I've already had calls with that group, I had a really good hour-and-a-half Zoom with those guys on Sunday, we went through a 150-page (document) about the future product model and everything,” McIlroy said after shooting 67 to tie for second, three shots behind tournament leader Xander Schauffele.

“I'm not on the board, but I'm in some way involved in that transaction committee. I don't have a vote so I don't—have I guess a meaningful say in what happens in the future, but at least I can feel like I can be helpful on that committee, and that was sort of a compromise for I guess not getting a board seat.”

McIlroy is the only person who is not part of the PGA Tour Enterprises Board of Directors but is likely in the enviable position of being exempt from mundane board duties while diving into the important work he’s concerned about regarding a deal with the PIF .

On Wednesday, McIlroy disclosed that he was willing to rejoin the board that he left in November after being asked by Simpson—who wanted to step down and have McIlroy take his place.

But unanimous board approval is required and McIlroy said there was resistance from some to his returning. Simpson subsequently said he will serve the remainder of his term.

Golf Digest later reported that it was board members Woods, Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth who were not in favor of McIlroy returning to the board. In a statement, Monahan said that “it’s simply a matter of adherence to our governance process by which a Tour player becomes a board member.”

But clearly there is some friction among players and their various views on what a deal with the PIF would look like.

Woods and McIlroy have been close for years and they seem to at least not share all of the same feelings as it relates to the possibility of golf unification.

“I think friends can have disagreements or not see things—I guess not—not see eye-to-eye on things but have disagreements on things,” McIlroy said. “I think that's fine. But no, I wouldn't say—we had a really good talk last Friday for 45 minutes just about a lot of different things. No, there's no strain there. I think we might see the future of golf a little bit differently, but I don't think that should place any strain on a relationship or on a friendship.”

McIlroy again tried to take the long view.

“I don't necessarily think or believe that people didn't want me involved, it was more just the process of how I could get involved again, right?” he said. “Like the board has went through this massive eight-month governance review, and what happened with Webb and I and that whole thing, that was outside of the scope of the governance, right? So then what's the process look like to try to bring me back in? That was really the sticking point with it all.

“So we tried to get to a compromise where, you know, I stuck my hand up and said, look, I can be helpful if this is what Webb wants to do. It was really tricky to do that, so I'm involved in the transaction committee and that's basically to try to get this deal done with PIF. I feel like I've got good relationships on both sides there and hopefully I can bring something to the table and try to provide some insight and value and see if we can get this thing done.”

Dustin Johnson on LIV golfers: 'We're the ones that took the risk for everything'

ksa tour

Dustin Johnson has a completely different take on those who shunned the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, and those who are being hailed as loyalists for remaining on the Tour.

Speaking on the second second season of the Netflix series Full Swing, Johnson believes those golfers who were handed tens, and some hundreds, of millions of dollars from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund are the ones who "took the risk." One reason is the criticism those golfers received from joining a league financed by a country with atrocious human rights violations.

Johnson, who lives in Jupiter, also wonders why those who remained on the Tour - many turning down those multi-millions - should be compensated if the two sides one day unite.

"No, I don't," Johnson said on the episode when asked if PGA Tour players were owed compensation if LIV players returned to the Tour.

"The guys that went to LIV, we took a lot of criticism. We're the ones that took the risk for everything. So why should they be compensated? Obviously, if this merger comes along, there's gonna be a lot of guys who wish they would've signed."

With no final deal since the framework agreement was announced 11 months ago, one heavily discussed aspect is how PGA Tour players are rewarded and LIV golfers penalized for their decisions.

PGA Tour players are being promised very large sums of money through the enterprises equity share plan. Large, as in a reported $100 million for Tiger Woods, $50 million for Rory McIlroy and $30 million for players like Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, according to the The Telegraph.

More: LIV Golf receives big boost with seven additional golfers invited to play in PGA Championship

When it comes to legacy, reputation and their safety, Johnson is correct. These players have made sacrifices.

Paulina Gretzky, Johnson's wife, revealed the couple receiving death threats after her husband joined LIV.

"People sending death threats and awful, awful, awful things," she said. "People were aggressive that’s for sure. But that’s when I shut it down for a little bit. I was like I don’t need to look at this. Everyone has an opinion on it. Fine.”

But financially … Jon Rahm's sacrifice will earn him a reported $550 million including bonuses for joining LIV, while Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Cam Smith reportedly all signed with LIV for more than $100 million.

And many others will earn tens of millions, such as Tyrrell Hatton, who reportedly signed for around $65 million.

Blinken to Meet With Arab Officials in Saudi Arabia About Israel-Gaza War

The U.S. secretary of state plans to raise the issues of hostages held by Hamas, a potential cease-fire, humanitarian aid and a long-term political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Reporting from Washington

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday to speak with top Arab officials and try to figure out possible solutions for the thorniest issues of the Israel-Gaza war, including humanitarian aid, reconstruction and hostages, the State Department said on Saturday.

One of Mr. Blinken’s priorities on Monday and Tuesday will be discussing “ongoing efforts to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza that secures the release of hostages,” a department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said in a statement. He added that Mr. Blinken would underscore his belief that it is Hamas that stands in the way of a cease-fire for the Palestinian people, since the group is not budging on the hostage negotiations.

Saudi Arabia is hosting a three-day meeting of the World Economic Forum, and top Arab officials, including Mr. Blinken’s diplomatic counterparts, are attending. They include senior ministers from Qatar and Egypt, which have been the two Arab mediators in multiple rounds of talks over a potential hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The forum’s website says Mr. Blinken will be in a half-hour public “conversation” starting at 12:45 p.m. on Monday, the final day of the conference.

American officials are pushing for Hamas to release about 40 of the 100 or more hostages it is holding in exchange for the liberation of many more Palestinian prisoners and a six-week cease-fire. U.S. officials say that would be the first step in securing a permanent cease-fire, and Israel supports the proposal. However, Hamas has insisted on a commitment to a permanent cease-fire, and many Arab officials, including in Saudi Arabia, have been calling for the same; those officials say that such a cease-fire should take place immediately.

Mr. Blinken and other top aides of President Biden have also been trying to push for a long-term political solution to the conflict. In their best-case scenario, they envision Saudi Arabia and perhaps a few other Arab nations agreeing to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel. In exchange, Saudi Arabia would receive advanced weapons and security guarantees, including a mutual defense treaty , from the United States, and a commitment for U.S. cooperation on a civilian nuclear program in the kingdom .

For its part, Israel would have to commit to a concrete pathway to the founding of a Palestinian nation, with specific deadlines, U.S. and Saudi officials say.

Before the war started last October, U.S. and Saudi officials were in intense discussions to reach an agreement on the terms of such a proposal. For those negotiators, a big question at the time was what Israel would agree to. Since the war began, the Americans and Saudis have publicly insisted that Israel must agree to the existence of a Palestinian state.

But Israeli leaders and ordinary citizens have become even more resistant to that idea since the Oct. 7 attacks, in which Hamas and allied gunmen killed more than 1,200 people and took about 240 people as hostages. About 100 of the hostages were released last November in a prisoner swap during a weeklong cease-fire. The Israeli military has launched attacks to eradicate Hamas from Gaza, where the health ministry says more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed.

Mr. Miller also said on Saturday that Mr. Blinken planned to discuss “continued progress on climate change mitigation and the global energy transition” at one of the World Economic Forum events. The secretary also expected to attend a meeting of ministers from nations in the Gulf Cooperation Council, a regional organization, to talk about security coordination.

An Israeli official told The New York Times on Friday that Mr. Blinken planned to visit Israel while in the region.

If Mr. Blinken does go there, the topics he is likely to discuss would no doubt be the same ones on his agenda for Riyadh, including increasing humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, a potential political solution in the form of a multicountry megadeal and the impasse over a hostage/cease-fire agreement. He would also probably discuss Israel’s plans for a major offensive in the Rafah area of Gaza, which Mr. Biden opposes.

The details of Mr. Blinken’s scheduled trips to the Middle East often change at the last minute . As of Saturday night, the State Department has not announced any stops beyond Riyadh.

Tiger Woods will be the lone player on a five-member subcommittee that will be involved in negotiations with the Public Investment Fund, part of a busy day of governance as the PGA Tour tries to strike a deal with Saudi backers of LIV Golf.

Woods was appointed to the PGA Tour board in August, making him the sixth player-director and the only one whose board term has no limits.

The tour said Woods will be part of the “transaction subcommittee” on the board of PGA Tour Enterprises that will handle day-to-day negotiations as PIF seeks to become a minority investor.

Also on the subcommittee are PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, board chairman Joe Gorder, John W. Henry of Fenway Sports Group and Joe Ogilvie, a former tour player appointed as a director liaison in March.

The subcommittee reports back to the full board.

The developments capped a day that began with Rory McIlroy losing the inside track on rejoining the board as Webb Simpson’s replacement when board members resisted his return.

“I think there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason,” McIlroy said at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, where a $20 million signature event is being played.

Simpson had offered to resign, but only if McIlroy were to replace him. When a player director resigns, the other players on the board have to unanimously agree on a successor. McIlroy resigned from the board in November , and the players selected Jordan Spieth to replace him.

The seven players — Woods, Spieth, Simpson, Ogilvie, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott and Peter Malnati — are on the board of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Enterprises, the commercial entity that agreed to a deal with Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor.

That deal included a $1.5 billion investment, which could be as much as $3 billion.

McIlroy was willing to return, believing he could help find a solution to the split in golf that has left some of the best players on two tours. McIlroy sees the reunification in some form as the ultimate goal and rubbed players the wrong way when he suggested earlier this year that LIV players return without punishment.

“Today’s news is in no way a commentary on Rory’s important perspective and influence,” Monahan said in a statement. “It’s simple a matter of adherence to our governance process by which a tour player becomes a board member.

“Webb remaining in his position as a member of the policy board and PGA Tour Enterprises board through the end of his term provides the continuity needed at this vital time,” he said. “We are making progress in our negotiations with the PIF.”

McIlroy is certain to stay involved in an unofficial capacity based on his experience of two years on the board and his voice in the game. He was the only European tour member on the PGA Tour board, and McIlroy has cultivated relationships across continents during his career.

He had said on a British soccer podcast at the start of this year that he met with the PIF governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai in late 2022 and that he returned home and encouraged the tour board to meet with him.

The framework agreement among the PGA Tour, European tour and PIF was announced June 6, with a deadline to finalize it by the end of 2023. Negotiations continue with little progress.

Woods was among the player directors who went to the Bahamas on March 18 — Monahan and Henry also attended — to meet with Al-Rumayyan.

Woods said at the Masters about that meeting, “I don’t know if we’re closer, but certainly we’re headed in the right direction. That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive.”

Gorder is the chairman and CEO of Valero, the title sponsor of the Texas Open. He has been appointed the inaugural chairman of the PGA Tour Enterprises board.
