Considerations for What to Wear on cruise for men

For those of you who are first time cruisers it it worth pointing out that cruise cabin staterooms are not renowned for being large. You want to not overpack so your luggage and packing will take up less space in your cabin.

One way of ensuring you pack lightly for a cruise is to pack a cruise capsule wardrobe. We like to use either the sudoku packing method or the 54321 packing technique to put together our men’s cruise capsule wardrobes.

Click here for what we think men’s travel essentials are.

Cruise Line

The cruise line you are traveling on will greatly influence the essential items on your men’s cruise packing list.

For instance, Cunard is renowned for being a much more formal line, and therefore you will see people wearing more formal and smart casual attire in the dining room.

Whereas, Norwegian Cruise Line on the other hand operates free style dining. This means that you are not set to a set dining room time and there are not formal nights or formal dinner to worry about.

Some cruises such as Disney also run theme nights, which require specific packing items.

Be sure to check out our cruise line specific dress code posts for information.

  • Carnival Dress Code
  • Celebrity Dress Code
  • Cunard Dress code
  • Norwegian Cruise Line Dress Code
  • Royal Caribbean Dress Code

Cruise Itinerary Length

The length of your cruise ship itinerary will greatly impact your packing depending on whether there are laundry facilities on your ship, and whether you are happy to do laundry on your cruise vacation.

We have packing lists for specific cruise lengths below to help guide you on the quantities you need to pack.

  • 4 day cruise packing list
  • 5 day cruise packing list
  • 7 day cruise packing list
  • 14 day cruise packing list

Formal Nights

As I mentioned above cruise formal nights take place in the main dining room but it depends on the length of your cruise and the line you are sailing with as to how many you can expect.

Although some lines still recommend formalwear such as black tie tuxedos for formal nights, many places now will see men wearing chinos and a sports jacket instead.

If you have 2 or more formal nights we recommend packing just one jacket and trousers and using different button-down shirts and ties to style them differently.

Destination/

Whether you are traveling on warm weather cruises such as to the Caribbean, Mexico, French Polynesia or Fiji or a cold weather cruise i.e. Alaska, Iceland or the Baltics will affect how many layers you need.

However we always recommend packing a top layer for on the cruise ship where the air conditioning can be very strong.

Shore Excursions

The type of shore excursion you plan on doing will also affect the type of clothes you will need to pack. If you plan to do a lot of snorkelling and water activities then you will need more swimwear and snorkeling equipment with you.

Whereas if you are traveling to just cities, then comfortable walking shoes will need to be top of your list.

How to Put Together a Men’s Cruise Capsule wardrobe

Now capsule wardrobes are great not only for cruises but for other types of travel and for those who want to minimise their wardrobe more generally.

As such there are a few main capsule wardrobe rules or principles that you should try to abide by when putting together your cruise capsule wardrobe

The main rules for putting together a cruise capsule wardrobe are:

Only take beloved items

By this I mean only take items that you are absolutely 100% sure that you want to wear.

If you don’t wear it at home it is unlikely it will be come a go to item on a cruise ship.

Everything must work in more than one outfit

Don’t pack anything that can only be worn in one way.

Color schemes

Now this isn’t necessary in all capsule wardrobes but picking a color pallete so that everything complements each other is a great idea.

So now we have discussed why you should pack a capsule wardrobe and the basics about packing capsule rules we will turn our attention to how to put together a cruise capsule wardrobe and the best men’s wear for cruises.

In this section of the guide we will look at the best cruise wear for men, and put together some men’s cruise outfit ideas for your to give you inspiration for what to wear as a man on a cruise.

Note : although this aims to be a universal guide for the best cruise wear for men we have indicated the optional items which are weather dependent.

Casual Cruise Outfits for Men

MAn in shorts and shirt on a cruise ship

For a week’s cruise you will likely need around 3-4 casual outfits. These can be used on the day on the ship both on port days and sea days and can also be used on shore excursions and days in port.

Therefore we recommend packing the following items as part of your men’s cruise capsule wardrobe.

No matter the destination you are traveling to a t shirt is a great pick for a man on a cruise. These work no matter the destination and can be used in port and on shore excursions as well as on the cruise ship during the day.

Also if you have a casual night in the main dining room, then t shirts will be appropraite attite.

And plain smart t shirts or even polo shirts will work on smart casual nights in the main dining room. Note: in the buffet restaurant on cruise ships you can wear t shirts for both lunch and dinner any day of your cruise.

Click here to shop men’s t shirts on Amazon

If you decide to wear tank tops these will not be permitted in the main dining room at night.

Note : I often find that people tend to have a bit more humor on a cruise ship than they do on land. Therefore you will often find people especially men wearing comedy cruise related t shirts.

Click cruise pun shirts here .

Shorts are an essential on any hot weather cruise. If you plan on heading to any beaches or sticking poolside, then we recommend packing quick dry shorts.

It can be hard to dry shorts in humid conditions so we recommend quick dry ones in the Caribbean and Mexico etc.

Click here to shop quick dry shorts for men.

However it is also worth bringing smarter chino shorts or classic fit shorts with you like the ones below for in European cities for instance, and for using on casual nights on the cruise ship.

If you are traveling to Europe we also recommend avoiding cargo shorts where possible. This is because they will likely mark you as a tourist.

Click here to shop smart cruise shorts for men.

Even if you are traveling to a cold weather destination, such as going on a Baltic or an Alaskan cruise we recommend taking swimwear with you.

That is because even if the swimming pools aren’t heated (although many are heated on Alaskan cruises) , there are still lots of hot tubs for you to enjoy.

The only exception to this may be if you are traveling on a river cruise in Europe as most but not all of these have hot tubs. It is worth checking before travel so you know what to pack.

Also the good thing about cruises is that you will see all sorts of swimwear. On my cruises from America you will find most men wear swimming trunks. However on cruises with more European passengers you will also find that some men wear speedos.

Click here to shop men’s swimwear for cruises.

Rash Vest (optional)

A rash vest is an optional for most but is something that my husband always has on his cruise packing list. He likes to wear it out on the pool deck but I know not all men do.

However if you are traveling to a location where you plan to snorkel and do water sports it is good to have as extra protection from the sun.

Click here to shop men’s rash vests.

Sun hat (optional)

Only required if you plan to go on hot weather cruises. When I have cruised in the Caribbean the most common type of hat I see being worn by men is a baseball cap.

Required on cruises no matter the destination in my opinion.

Smart Casual Men’s Cruise Wear for Men

Man dress in smart casual men's cruise outfit with Alaska in background

Smart casual will be what you see most men wearing on a cruise at night. The best smart casual cruise wear for men in our opinion are:

Polo Shirts

If you don’t like wearing shirts then polo shirts are a great compromise for smart casual wear on cruises.

Click here to buy polo shirts.

Shirt (long or short-sleeve shirts)

Shirts both long and short sleeve will commonly be seen in the restuarants on cruise ships.

In hot weather destinations you tend to see more short sleeve shirts however it is worth noting that the air conditioning in the dining rooms can make you feel chilly.

On top of regular shirts you will also see many men wearing on cruise ships is

Hawaiian shirts

Hawaiian shirts are very popular on hot weather cruises, not just on a Hawaiian cruise.

Click here to shop Hawaiian shirts for cruises

Note : on many cruises shorts are not allowed in the main dining room so even on a hot weather cruise you will need a longer length pant if you want to eat in a main dining room or a specialty restaurant.

Chinos are a great choice for smart casual cruise wear for men, and can also be used as part of a formal cruise outfit on most cruise lines.

Linen pants are another great pick for men’s smart casual cruise outfits.

Click here to shop men’s chinos.

Smart Jeans

We are most commonly asked “Are jeans OK on a cruise?” And on most cruise lines smart jeans are acceptable for the main dining room.

However if you are not allowed jeans in the main dining room on your cruise it is still worth packing jeans for cooler days.

Reversible Belt

To ensure you have a belt for various colored chinos, shorts and jeans we recommend packing a reversible belt. This way you will only need one belt with you.

Click here to shop reversible belts.

Formal Cruise Wear for Men

Formal nights are not as common as they once were on cruises and the formal night dress codes are not as strict anymore.

It is worth checking your cruise lines policy regarding formal attire before packing but generally speaking the below will meet most (but not all) cruise formal night dress codes.

Note : Norwegian Cruise Line does not have formal lines and Cunard still tends to be the most formal.

Sports Jacket

My husband tends to find a sports jacket the perfect cruise outfit for formal nights.

Other good jacket choices for cruise formal nights include linen jackets. If you are worried about traveling with linen because of creases check out this post.

Click here to shop sports jackets.

As we mentioned above. These transition from smart casual to formal outfits depending on how you style them.

Tie (optional)

My husband hates wearing a tie, and a tie is not required on most cruises. Therefore it really depends on whether or not you wear ties as to whether you should pack one.

Tuxedo and dress shirt (optional)

A tuxedo and dress shirt shirt are really optional on most cruise lines (check your cruise line before travel). Therefore you would only need to pack this on a few cruise lines. However if you want to wear one then feel free to pack one.

Best men’s shoes for cruises

When I create any of my packing lists I recommend trying to limit the number of shoes you pack to 2 -3 pairs.

No matter where you are traveling you should pack:

These work no matter the destination you are traveling to whether cities, beaches or countryside. Great sneaker brands for cruises are Hoka and All Birds.

Depending on the time of year and destination you are traveling to you may need to buy a pair that has some water resistant qualities or that are light weight to cope with the heat.

Smarter Shoes

Sneakers often allowed in main dining rooms so you will need smarter shoes or dress shoes for smart casual evenings or formal nights on cruise ships.

Although I don’t recommend wearing these for walking around European cities, they are an essental on cruises for the pool deck and on beach excursions.

Hiking Shoes (optional)

These will only be required if you are doing lots of walking on excursions.

Water shoes (optional)

Only required if you plan on doing excursions involving snorkelling or water sports.

Click here to shop water shoes.

What Clothes To Pack For A Cruise: A Concise Packing List (For Men)

men's caribbean cruise attire

Heading out into the open seas soon, and want to make sure you’re dressed right? Look no further. We’re gonna cover exactly what clothes to pack for a cruise in this article.

And yes, you’re on a menswear website, so our focus is on tackling that cruise packing list for men. There seem to be more guides out there designed for ladies when it comes to packing for trips. This, unfortunately, doesn’t mean that men’s suitcases are a straight-forward endeavor.

This is true when it comes to packing for a cruise, and especially when figuring out what to include in your vacation wardrobe.

men's caribbean cruise attire

Not all boat holidays are the same. Different parts of the ship have different temperature situations to consider, not to mention the range of programming and points of disembarking—sometimes it feels like you’re packing for every season. Keep reading to get the details!

Jump To Any Section

A Quick Cruise Packing List (For Men)

If you just need a checklist to start packing, to check over what you’ve already packed, or to jog your memory for things you might’ve forgotten, I’ve listed everything right in this section (we’ll get into each item further down in this article):

What to Pack for Every Cruise

Regardless of whether you’re on a cruise in the Caribbean or a multi-stop European voyage, you’re definitely going to need a few style basics that can be used to create several outfits.

In general, you’ll want to follow the basics and guidelines we outline in our men’s summer fashion article.

We’re assuming a 7-day cruise for this packing list, but if you’re taking a longer 10- or 14-day cruise, you may have to double up on some of these.

Men’s Swimsuit

When going on a cruise, you should bring at least two different swimsuits. You have the option of buying various quick-drying swim shorts that are comfortable and excellent for catamaran snorkeling trips and beach outings.

Obviously, you’ll go for your favorite colors to wear, though if you’re on a tropical cruise, it’s a good time to experiment with brighter hues and lively patterns if it’s something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the opportunity.

If you know the programming will have a white party or a deck cocktail, and if you’re more of a sunbather and feet-dipper, rather than a full-on swimmer, here’s a trick to help you pack more efficiently.

Go for fitted, above-the-knee shorts, in white or cream. If you aren’t planning on getting wet, it’ll serve all of the above purposes.

Mack Weldon Swim Board Shorts

Last but not least Like its socks or boxer briefs, Mack Weldon has turned its penchant for design and performance into some must-buy swim trunks. These feature four-way stretch fabric and zip front and back pockets to protect your EDC from wind and waves.

Which leads us to our next cruise essential…

Classic Fit Shorts

When choosing what clothes to pack for a cruise, remember that you’ll always look great in beige or tan shorts with a classic fit .

Again, depending on your poolside preferences, jersey or linen shorts will get a ton of mileage on a cruise.

J.Crew Stretch Chino Shorts in Stone

Wearing shorts made of jersey material with pockets is ideal when you’re lounging by the pool, walking around the cruise ship, or visiting the ports, since it’s lightweight and made for comfort and warm weather.

Unless there’s a non-neutral color that you really love and want to wear a lot, shades like gray, navy blue, black, and olive will be the easiest to partner shirts with (in addition to the prior mentioned white or cream ).

Classic Fit Men’s Chinos

Khaki pants should always be on your list of what to pack for a cruise. In general, cruises are mostly resort-casual during the day, and chinos are a perfect, elegant approach to a relaxed on-vacation look. Plus, they’re super versatile.

Chinos are ideal for a variety of occasions, including smart casual evenings and events that take place in the ship’s main dining rooms and restaurants .

Banana Republic Chinos

BR has a variety of chinos in different fits and fabric styles, some 100% cotton, others with a bit of stretch for comfort.

Bring along at least one or two pairs of classic pants that you can wear with a button-down shirt or a polo top—a pair of maroon pants might be a fun option .

Long-sleeve Linen Shirt

Long-sleeve linen shirts are worth mentioning. They’re lightweight and look cruise-appropriate, with or without a collar.

Again, because of the casual-leaning nature of cruises, they may not be as versatile as their short-sleeve, collared counterparts (which are perfectly appropriate by the pool and walking around during the day).

But to be honest, I’d recommend a linen shirt for your everyday, walk-around outfit because they look so great in tropical locales (and on ships). They’re flowy and cool, as well, and are easily dressed up or down.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Effortless Gent | effortlessgent.com (@effortlessgent)

If you opt to bring a long-sleeve linen shirt , you can pair it with chinos and leather loafers for an elegantly casual dinner look . If you don’t bring one, just replace with a short-sleeve collared shirt and a blazer.

Short-Sleeve Collared Shirts

Polo shirts and short-sleeve button-ups, like khaki or linen shorts, can do double and triple duty on basically any kind of cruise.

short sleeve shirt fit - peter manning short sleeve shirts

How Should Polos and Short Sleeve Button Up Shirts Fit?

In fact, unless there is formal programming on the boat, you can likely get away with just packing a polo a day in different colors, since you can wear them with shorts or pants, and with or without a blazer or jacket.

Short-sleeve button-ups are even more versatile since they can sometimes pass as more formal shirts when paired with a sport jacket .

Speaking of jackets, you should probably bring a sport coat. They’re the cherry on top for the resort casual or smart casual outfits you’ll be wearing on the ship.

The one exception is if you’re packing a full suit. If you are strategic with your suit selection, you can skip bringing a sport coat and just wear the suit trousers and jacket separately as needed. (See below for our thoughts on bringing a suit.)

Spier & Mackay Navy Hopsack Jacket

A luxurious, open weave wool silk blend fabric from Italian mill Lanificio di Pray. This perfect relaxed, versatile, warm weather jacket features an unstructured cut with no padding or canvassing.

So what kind of sport coat? I’d recommend a lightweight, unstructured navy jacket made from cotton, linen, silk, wool, or some combination of those. That’s gonna be your most versatile and comfortable jacket. It’ll go with stone chinos, white denim, light grey linen trousers, light khaki chino shorts, everything.

For shoes, you’ll need: One sharp pair of loafers , one pair of white / neutral low-profile leather or canvas sneakers , and a pair of flip-flops or slides for the pool or beach.

A leather boat shoe ( worn with or without socks ) could replace both flip flops and sneakers, though if they get scuffed up on the beach or wash away with the waves, you won’t have a backup casual shoe option.

Want ONE Pair of Great Loafers?

These Grant Stone Suede Loafers Are It. Read Our Review →

Most likely, your loafers will see the most use. That’s because they’re a great option for your resort casual outfits. Minimal canvas or white leather sneakers (or boat shoes) are fine too, but how often do we get to step up our style in a fun, OK-to-show-out situation such as a fancy cruise?

Loafers are the most balanced way to approach effortless formality, perfect for a cruise. They can be worn with shorts and they’re great traveling shoes too, since they’re easy to slip on and off.

Accessories

When it comes to accessories, consider bringing a leather belt , one or two watches , a pair of sunglasses , and one to two hats . You may need one or two ties , too, if you have any formal dinners to attend.

For ties , you’re certainly welcome to pack just one, if you’re okay with not mixing it up. And, you can also pack several if you know you’ll be wearing a tie often, and it doesn’t take up packing space from the essentials. Some cruises do have more than one semi-formal in its duration.

For watches , you can bring one, as long as it’s a versatile, luxury sport watch . Most luxury sport watches can be paired with a suit. And if there’s a truly formal, tuxedo-appropriate event, you can just go watchless, per old traditions. Otherwise, bring one dress watch and one casual watch .

To protect yourself from the sun, bring hats and sunglasses —two of each in case you lose one.

men's caribbean cruise attire

Specific Clothes for Specific Cruises

Now that we’ve covered the essentials you’ll need on every cruise, here are some pieces you may need to consider for more specialized situations.

A lot of these can actually take the place of some of the above essentials, if you like, though they aren’t as easily multi-use. Read on to see what I mean!

A Summer-Weight Suit

While you won’t always need a fully formal/black-tie optional situation, you may need at least one proper suit.

If a particular program or time of evening at a ship’s dining hall is truly black tie, you’ll know because the cruise line will fully communicate that to you. However, in the semi-formal or cocktail realm, it’s best to avoid landmines and just bring a suit.

The Perennial Suit from Suitsupply

The perfect suit to have, if you only have one suit. Available in classic colors and a variety of cuts.

When you’re on the boat, you’ll never be that far away from your room, and if you don’t end up wearing the jacket and the pants together, they’ll be effective separates for dinner or drinks .

Even if you don’t wear a dress shirt , you can wear a short-sleeve button-up, camp collar shirt , or ribbed hem polo shirt in its place. Plus, the jacket can serve as a piece of outerwear for places on the boat that are air-conditioned.

If, and only if, there’s formal programming at any point in the cruise, will you need a tuxedo plus all its accoutrement. And typically, the cruise line will be pretty blatant about it in their messaging.

In fact, most cruise lines won’t have anything that formal , and you’ll more likely run into this situation if you’re on a private cruise. Meaning, perhaps the social club you’re in or the company you work for is throwing a special event.

That being the case, there might be a formal dinner with a presentation, maybe there’s a Bond-like casino theme going on, or sometimes one of your stops includes a banquet hall situation.

These days, you can often wear a crisp black suit to formal events. You’ll just need a different suit, maybe in gray or navy, if there’s a cocktail on another day, so that you can differentiate your formal and cocktail attire.

Dress Shirt

Similar to a tuxedo, you won’t often need a dress shirt at most resort-style cruises. Naturally, you’ll need at least one or two , if any of the above formal situations are expected.

Otherwise, it’s a matter of how much you want to spruce it up at semi-formals, at dinner, and at cocktail events.

Dress shirts aren’t as versatile as short-sleeve button-ups, when it comes to what goes on during a cruise, but they also don’t take up that much room.

As always, feel free to pack one or two, if you like, as long as it doesn’t take up the space of an essential.

Dress Shoes

If you have a nice pair of leather or suede loafers such as what I’ve mentioned above, you can probably get away with that for most resort casual and formal dress codes.

Again, pay attention to the cruise’s schedule of events. If you’re attending a particularly high-end cruise trip, then you may need specific dress shoes like oxfords or bluchers, which are a step above loafers in terms of formality .

Sports- & Activity-Specific Gear

If you’re going on a cruise built around a specific hobby or activity, like golfing or hiking, you’ll obviously need to pack accordingly.

You might do some hiking during general travel cruises, in which case your sneakers will do just fine. However, if it’s an actual hiking tour, you’ll need your trail shoes or hiking boots .

Make sure your boots are fully broken in, or you’ll be in a lot of pain during the activities !

Other possible sports clothes and gear you might need include golf cleats, since golf tour cruises are common among hobbyists, and possibly even wetsuits, if you go on a diving cruise.

Diving cruises typically provide all of the gear though, so it really depends on the cruise line. It’s the same situation with golf gear.

Which leads us to our next topic…

Non-Clothing Items to Pack for a Cruise

Toiletries and medicine.

You’ll probably find soap and shampoo in your stateroom on cruise ships just as you would in a hotel. But, the onboard items might not work well for your hair and skin , or you might not like the scent .

If that sounds like you, then it’s best to bring your own toiletries whenever possible—especially if you have allergies.

Since you’ll be under the sun a lot, sunscreen is also very important!

Pack more than you believe you’ll require because it might be challenging to get your preferred brands in ports outside of the country and cruise liners often charge exorbitant fees for the sale of necessities.

Travel Gear

Not all of us have the good fortune to live within a couple of hours drive of a major seaport. The majority of cruise passengers must either fly or drive to their embarkation port, which means they must pack for both modes of transportation.

Accessories for the airplane, such as a neck cushion, eye mask, or noise-canceling headphones, should be included for lengthy flights and overnight flights leading up to a cruise vacation.

If you have a pre-cruise hotel stay planned, you might want to think about packing the essentials for that extended stay in a separate bag so that you won’t have to unpack as well as repack your primary suitcase .

This will save you time and energy.

You’re going to want to bring your tablet computer or an electronic book reader with you for both the pre-cruise travel and if you want to relax with a good book , or audio book , under the sun while you’re on the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a man wear on a cruise .

  • a) a classic linen shirt or b) a camp collar shirt , with
  • a) chino shorts or b) chino pants, and
  • a) white minimalist sneakers or b) brown loafers.

Choosing one option from each line is a simple outfit option that would cover a wide range of cruise dress codes (or lack of dress codes).

Of course, if you’re attending a formal event or lounging by the pool, you’ll need something a bit different. See the above article for all our suggestions.

How many outfits do I need for a 7-day cruise?

If you follow the Lean Wardrobe philosophy , most / all of your individual items can be mixed and matched into a number of wardrobes, so you don’t have to bring tons of stuff.

In general, you should carry enough clothing to make at least 6-7 outfits (individual items can be repeated in several of these outfits, of course). Depending on the cruise program, you will need a mix of formal / semi-formal outfits and resort casual outfits .

You’ll also need pool and loungewear, and practical attire for adventures on dry land.

What should I wear during the day on a cruise ship?

The goal here is to be casual, yet put together and stylish. Try tailored shorts, linen shirts , and minimal canvas or leather sneakers, for starters. This will take you from the deck to the dock, throughout the towns you’re exploring, and back again.

Don’t forget your accessories, like a straw panama hat, a handkerchief or bandana (to wipe your hands or sweaty brow) and classically shaped sunglasses for a bit of sun protection.

Are jeans OK on a cruise?

Yes, jeans are generally OK on a cruise, particularly during the day or in casual settings. For max versatility, bring a pair of clean, dark wash, straight leg jeans with minimal distressing and fading. These can easily be dressed up or down.

It’s best to avoid distressed or overly casual jeans. They’re not as versatile and may not be suitable for some dining venues or formal events on board.

Can I wear shorts to dinner on a cruise?

Shorts are perfectly fine for daytime activities, though they are most likely not appropriate for the cruise ship’s formal dining settings and events. To be safe, wear trousers or chinos paired with a collared shirt for a more polished, dinner-appropriate look .

The more casual dining venues or buffet-style restaurants may be more lenient with their dress code, allowing shorts during meal times.

What is smart casual attire for a cruise ship?

Smart casual attire for men on a cruise ship might include dress chinos or tailored trousers, a crisp button-down shirt or ribbed hem polo shirt , and a lightweight sport coat. Finish the look with loafers or dress shoes, a clean dress belt, and a refined watch .

The smart casual dress code allows for a more relaxed vibe while still maintaining a refined appearance, perfect for most cruise ship events and dining venues.

Are there any items I should avoid packing for a cruise?

You can probably leave these things at home:

  • Overly casual items like distressed jeans or offensive / corny graphic tees (not appropriate for a classy cruise ship)
  • Heavy coats or bulky sweaters (not needed in a tropical cruise climate)
  • Basic toiletries (unless you need them for a specific reason) such as soap and shampoo, towels, a hair dryer, etc. The cruise ship will provide these for you

Bon Voyage!

When traveling on a cruise, it’s common to bring too many clothes and forget everything else.

When you take your luggage out of the closet and start packing for your next trip, refer to this list so that you can make sure you have everything you need, not only in terms of clothing but also the accessories and toiletries you’ll need.

Most importantly, loosen up and enjoy yourself. You’re going on a cruise! If you have any more questions on what to pack for a one or two week cruise, you can DM us on Instagram anytime.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise (Complete Guide)

For some of us, trying to figure out what to wear to dinner can be daunting. But imagine trying to pack clothes for a Caribbean cruise. While it seems like you’d be just fine wearing a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, there’s a lot more to account for when deciding what to wear.

On a cruise you don’t have the luxury of your complete wardrobe and closet to pick from. Instead, you only can choose from what you’ve brought with you. That means you’ve got to pack for what to wear in a variety of different situations that you’ll find while on the ship.

Packing to Prepare For Lots of Different Activities

men's caribbean cruise attire

The big issue is that with cruising you can go through more wardrobe changes in a single day than you might see on an entire week at a “regular” vacation.

Take a hypothetical day on a cruise and see how many different situations you need to prepare for:

  • Wake up, put on some shorts, flip-flops, and a shirt to head to breakfast.
  • After breakfast you decide to workout, so you change into gym shorts and trainers.
  • You decide that it’s time to get a little sun poolside, so you change into a swimsuit.
  • An afternoon storm comes, so you head inside. It’s a bit chilly inside the ship, so you put on pants and grab a long-sleeve shirt.
  • It’s formal night, so you get fancied up to go to spend the evening with a drink and a great meal.
  • After dinner they are showing a movie poolside, so change back into a swimsuit to watch while soaking in the hot tub

And this is just one day!

Not to worry. It’s understandable that you might be wondering exactly what to wear when visiting the Caribbean on a cruise.

Below we break down each of the big parts of your cruise, including a number of items of what to wear in each situation…

What to Wear on Embarkation Day

men's caribbean cruise attire

There’s simply no day like Embarkation Day. The excitement really starts the instant you see the ship in the distance. Then you realize that the day you’ve been looking forward to for months is finally at hand.

If you’re wondering what to wear during embarkation day, you want to take your cue from the weather in port. While ships start letting passengers board around noon on the day of your cruise, the ship won’t actually leave until around 4-5 p.m.

In other words, you need to dress for the weather in the home port.

Depending on where and when you sail, that can mean everything from just shorts and sandals all the way to full winter gear. For instance, sailing from Galveston in February is much different than sailing from Miami in July.

Usually, however, the weather is warm. We like to dress casual and comfortable as there is usually some walking to get to the terminal, through check-in, and to your room. Shorts and a t-shirt are ideal (unless it’s cold outside), along with some sensible shoes. We prefer to wear tennis shoes over sandals due to the walking on the first day.

If you’re wanting to hit the pool after boarding, you can pack swimwear in your carry-on and change once in your room.

Embarkation Day: Wear casual dress that’s comfortable and appropriate for the weather in the home port. Since the ship won’t leave until the afternoon, those in cooler ports won’t see the warmth of the Caribbean until the next day. Leaving from a warmer port? Shorts and tennis shoes are perfectly fine. No need to dress up, casual is the order of the day all around the ship.

What to Wear on Sea Days

Pretty much any cruise you sail will have at least one day at sea as it heads from port to port. During these times you have all day and evening to explore the activities on a ship. Depending on which ship you sail, that can mean anything from hanging out poolside to playing in the casino, working out, heading to a show after dinner, dancing in a nightclub, riding in a go-kart, flying down a waterslide and more.

In other words, what you wear is going to vary based on what you want to do.

In general terms, however, the dress on a Caribbean cruise at sea is decidedly casual. Short and tees are acceptable everywhere. Swimsuits are appropriate on the top decks around the pool, and it’s not unusual to see people wearing them around the ship while covered up. You will want to have a shirt/cover up if heading in somewhere to eat for lunch.

During the evenings you are going to want to wear a bit more simply to stay comfortable, but can still dress casual. Despite being in the warm Caribbean, nights can be chilly. Temperatures drop as the sun goes down, and with the ship underway, there is always a constant breeze.

That’s why we suggest warmer dress, including pants and a long-sleeve shirt or even a light jacket. As well, if you’re headed inside to the theater for an evening show, it’s nice to dress a little warmer as the air conditioning can be chilly.

Day: Casual is the order of the day, with shorts, sandals, and swimsuits found around the ship. It’s polite to cover up swimsuits if headed indoors. Restaurants are all casual during the day, so no need to dress up. Evening: Wear what makes you comfortable, but keep in mind that evenings on the ship — even in the warm Caribbean — can be cool and breezy outside. The air conditioning inside can be cool as well. We suggest pants and at least a light long-sleeve shirt to stay comfy.

What to Wear to Dinner (Casual Night)

men's caribbean cruise attire

Not sure what to wear to dinner? It’s understandable to be confused. Head to the main dining room with the white tablecloths and well-dressed waitstaff and you might think you need to wear a tux to be served.

A trip to the buffet, however, is much more casual and there are a number of other restaurants on a ship that range from casual to fancy.

During a 7-night cruise, there are usually two formal nights, which means that the majority of your nights are considered casual when it comes to what you wear to dinner. That said, there are some guidelines we suggest you adhere to.

If you head to the main dining room or a higher-end restaurant like the steakhouse, then we suggest dressing up a little bit — even if it’s not formal night.

For men, that means wearing pants and closed-toe shoes. A buttoned-down shirt is also ideal. For women, leave the bathing suits for the pool, but sandals are usually fine.

If you just want to grab a bite without worrying about what to wear, then head to the buffet or one of the casual restaurants on board. Here it’s perfectly fine to wear flip-flops, shorts, t-shirts and the like. You won’t be out of place.

Cruise lines do ask that you don’t wear bathing suits into the eating areas without covering up, so if you are headed to or from the pool, be sure that you are wearing a shirt and/or a cover-up.

Dining Rooms and Upscale Restaurants: Dress how you would for any other nice sit-down restaurant, but don’t feel like you have to be too formal. Buffet  or Casual Restaurants: Where whatever is comfortable as there is no (reasonable) dress code for these spots. Sandals and shorts are fine, but cover up if you are wearing a swimsuit.

What to Wear to Dinner (Formal Night)

One of the biggest questions people have is what to wear to formal night. Some people think that anything short of a tuxedo or a formal evening gown is too casual. That’s not the case at all.

While formal night might be intimidating for some, it’s actually not that big of a deal. Yes, you could dress casual to dinner and no one would really pay much mind. However, we suggest dressing it up some.

Formal night is a big deal to some people on the ship, and if it’s not important to you, it’s good to keep the atmosphere nice for others who do enjoy dressing up.

As for what to wear, don’t think you have to go all out. You’ll find that the outfits run the gamut from simply a nice shirt and pants all the way to a tuxedo for some guys. For ladies, a cute blouse is fine, all the way to a full-length formal gown.

Do you have to dress up if you aren’t going to dinner in the dining room? Absolutely not.

Formal night is really just for the main dining room. So while you will see people dressed up around the ship, don’t feel obligated to do so if you’re eating somewhere else.

( For more on what to wear on formal night, see our article here .)

Dining Rooms and Upscale Restaurants: Everything from button up shirts with pants all the way to tuxedos are acceptable for men. Women can wear anything from a blouse to formal gowns. No shorts should be worn, nor should t-shirts or jeans. Buffet or Casual Restaurants: Feel free to wear whatever you like, including casual wear. Formal night applies to the main dining rooms, but not the casual restaurants or buffets on the ship.

What to Wear in Ports of Call/Excursions

men's caribbean cruise attire

Headed into port? If you’re sailing in the Caribbean then chances are that you’re going to the beach. In that case, wearing your swimsuit with a cover-up or simply wearing something casual into the port is ideal.

Keep in mind that many countries in the Caribbean can be conservative, so it’s best to be respectful and not wear anything too revealing unless you’re at the beach. As well, some countries have laws against civilians wearing camouflage patterns, so leave that at home as well. Finally, rude or offensive clothing (such as shirts with foul language) should be avoided.

If you’re going on an excursion, check to see if they have any requirements for clothing. For instance, many excursions that involve motor vehicles like 4-wheelers or dune buggies require participants to wear closed-toe shoes.

Dress in Ports of Call: For the most part, ports of call are casual dress. The only exception is if you are going on an excursion. They may require special clothing like long pants or closed-toe shoes, depending on what you’re doing.

Frequently Asked Questions

men's caribbean cruise attire

Do I have to dress up for formal night?

Absolutely not. Formal nights are completely optional. Want to spend your cruise wearing shorts and a Hawaiian shirt? That’s perfectly fine.

That said, if you don’t want to dress up, it’s best to dine somewhere other than the upscale restaurants or the main dining room during formal night. These spots are for formal dining, and you’ll be out of place if you show up wearing sneakers and a t-shirt.

Instead, if you don’t want to dress up, look for somewhere else to dine on formal night. Read our guide to formal night here .

Are there rules about the swimsuits I can wear?

There are no hard rules about swimsuits, and we’ve seen it all on a cruise. Where whatever makes you feel comfortable, but just know that other people will be wearing what makes them feel comfortable too.

These days it’s not unusual to see some skimpier swimsuits on some people. As long as there is no nudity, then it’s ok.

One thing to keep in mind is that you should cover up if you are heading indoors from the pool. Wearing your swimwear around the ship is frowned upon.

How am I supposed to pack so many different clothes for a cruise?

First, while it might seem like you have to pack tons and tons of clothes for all the situations mentioned above. In reality, it’s not that much. That’s because clothes can be worn more than once on your trip.

For a week cruise, we’d suggest bringing 3-4 outfits, two swimsuits, plus something to wear for formal night. That’s plenty to get your through the week. Shorter cruises need fewer clothes.

Second, unlike air travel, cruise lines don’t have hard rules regarding how much luggage you can bring . You can pack a huge suitcase and there’s no charge or weight limit. That offers more flexibility in packing for your cruise.

Cruise Wear for Men

I love shopping for my husband’s clothes—it’s more fun and easier than shopping for myself, which he appreciates given his hectic schedule. Right before our trips, shopping for cruise clothes is an enjoyable ritual for him, often adding new items to his wardrobe before we go.

StitchFix has been a game-changer, creating a versatile capsule wardrobe for various occasions. Despite using the service, we still enjoy picking up additional pieces to complete his cruise attire because dressing for work isn’t the same as dressing for a cruise! He’s my playful “StitchFix model.”

Cruise Clothes for Men for Daytime Activities

  • For casual daytime activities like poolside relaxation or ship exploration, choose comfy and breathable options: shorts, tees, polos, sandals, or sneakers.
  • Opt for athletic wear, such as shorts and a moisture-wicking tee, for activities like rock climbing or zip-lining.
  • Dress comfortably and respectfully for port visits, adjusting to the destination. In the Caribbean, wear swimwear and light clothing. In the Mediterranean, opt for pants or jeans with a polo shirt.
  • For visiting European churches, cover your knees and shoulders—no shorts or tank tops.
  • In hot weather, lighter colors keep you cool under the sun.
  • Always check the dress code for restaurants or lounges you plan to visit during the day.

T-shirts are a must-have in your cruise clothes for men’s ensembles—versatile, comfortable, and suitable for any occasion. Pack 4-5, including basic plain ones and those with fun graphics, but avoid anything offensive. Consider bringing shirts that are dry-quick

They pair well with swimwear, shorts, jeans, khakis, and linen pants. For a dressier dinner look, a high-quality t-shirt can be combined with a button-down shirt, blazer, or jacket for a stylish vibe.

Include 1-2 plain dark-colored T-shirts for versatility. My brother opts for multi-pack cotton shirts, keeping things easy and functional for his travels—it works for him.

Fun Cruise T-Shirts for Men

For a hot and sunny destination, include shorts in your men’s cruise wardrobe—they’re comfortable, practical, and ideal for staying cool in the heat.

When selecting shorts, consider the length and fit. Cargo or quick-drying shorts offer a casual look for a day out in port, while linen or golf shorts can be dressed up for a more formal appearance.

men's caribbean cruise attire

Create a laid-back daytime look by pairing your shorts with a comfortable t-shirt or polo shirt. For a chic appearance, dress them up with a button-down shirt.

My husband loves his cargo shorts for their comfort and casual style, plus the convenient pockets for small items. Quick-drying shorts are another favorite—they can double as swimwear if the occasion arises. You never know!

men's caribbean cruise attire

Sea days revolve around the lido deck and pool, while port days are for beach and water activities if in the Caribbean. Pack swimwear even for an Alaskan cruise —you might find a hot tub and indoor pool or be surprised by warm sunny days.

By the pool, my husband goes for swim shorts and a T-shirt. Beach-hopping in the Caribbean means swim shorts and an SPF swim tee for swimming and sunbathing. His favorite is an Amazon Essentials Swim Tee , that we’ve purchased him in multiple colors, and they’ve lasted for years.

Comfortable Footwear

men's caribbean cruise attire

Comfortable footwear is a crucial part of your cruise wardrobe, considering the amount of walking around the cruise ship and in port.

Flip-flops are great for pool or beach days. Just be mindful of walking in them. Crocs and Keens are popular choices among cruisers.

Certain sneakers may be acceptable for dinner on non-formal nights in the main dining room. My husband vouches for the Adidas Cloudfoam sneakers as the most comfortable ever, and I had to get my own pair—now I’m obsessed!

Pack a hat to shield your head and face from the sun, and consider one that covers your neck to prevent sunburn (learned this the hard way once—it wasn’t pretty).

Don’t forget to slather on sunscreen for added protection.

Men’s Cruise Outfits for Evening Activities

  • We suggest more than just a swimsuit as evening approaches, even in a freestyle setting.
  • For men’s cruise attire, my husband’s decades-old advice stands strong: jeans and a polo shirt. It’s collared, casual yet not too formal—a practical and timeless choice for ship activities.
  • On casual nights, go for a sharp pair of jeans or pants, a basic top, and some dressy sneakers or shoes. Aim for smart casual, and you’re good to go.

Jeans and Pants

men's caribbean cruise attire

Opt for breathable cotton jeans and wrinkle-resistant chinos for cruise ship evenings. Jeans are versatile for multiple wear, while chinos can be dressed up or down—pair them with a button-down and blazer for a chic night.

My husband swears by his travel pants—super comfy and suitable for various occasions. They’ve become a staple in his cruise attire.

Polos and Button-Down Shirts

men's caribbean cruise attire

Level up from a t-shirt with a polo or button-down shirt—it instantly elevates your outfit.

With various fits, colors, and fabrics available, opt for breathable and comfortable materials to avoid feeling itchy and sweaty. Choosing a collared shirt doesn’t mean you should be ready to take it off at any moment.

men's caribbean cruise attire

A linen button-down is a nice piece to add to your men’s cruise wear, as it’s light to wear, and you don’t have to worry about it being overly wrinkled.

Since you’re on a cruise vacation, bring 1-2 Hawaiian shirts that scream vacation time.

men's caribbean cruise attire

Bring a hoodie, light jacket, or rain jacket for added comfort. Whether cruising the Caribbean or Mexican Riviera, nights on the ship can get chilly and windy outside. Always be prepared for unexpected rain.

Men’s Formal Chic Night Cruise Wear

kathy and her husband dressed up for cruise formal night

What do men wear on cruises for formal nights?

The days of formal nights when men used to dress up in tuxedos no longer exist, at least not on mainstream cruise lines. The guidelines have been relaxed, and it’s now more of a night where they ask that you dress up – a chic night. You have to be slightly more polished than usual.

You can mix and match for chic nights with these ideas:

  • A pair of chinos, a long-sleeved or short-sleeved button-down collared shirt, a belt, nice shoes, and an optional tie.
  • A dressy sweater , chinos, belt, and nice shoes.
  • A blazer, sportscoat , or nice button-down cardigan sweater with chinos, a button-down or polo shirt, and nice shoes.
  • A blazer or a sportscoat is an article of clothing that every man should have in their closet. It’s one item that easily transforms your casual look into a dressier one.
  • A suit with a button-down collared shirt, belt, nice shoes, and an optional tie.
  • On some cruises, a classic pair of jeans can pass as chic; make sure they are not distressed. Darker colored jeans work best.

Dressy Sweater, Blazer or Sports Coat

men's caribbean cruise attire

A dressy sweater, blazer, or sports coat goes well with a nice pair of pants for a chic night.

Paired with Chinos, Dress Pants, or Dark Jeans

men's caribbean cruise attire

A pair of chinos or dressy pants, and sometimes, even a pair of nice dark jeans, will work well for a chic night. Just pair it with a nice shirt, blazer, or a dressy sweater (if the jacket is required). You don’t want to wear jeans if it’s a full-on formal night on the cruise.

Button Downs or Polo Shirts

men's caribbean cruise attire

Button-downs can be as dressy and as casual as you want them to be. They are versatile and can be worn more than once during the cruise. You are set for a chic night once you pair this with a blazer and nice pants.

The Optional Suit

men's caribbean cruise attire

A nice suit covers you well for a formal or chic night. It’s an option if you want to pack it with you. Wear it with a tie, button down, or no tie, and even a polo shirt.

Dress Shoes

Pack dress shoes or even dressy sneakers to complete your men’s cruise outfits for chic or elegant evening nights on the cruise.

While adding another pair of shoes for limited wear can be frustrating, the enjoyment of dining at main and specialty restaurants makes it worthwhile. With NCL, there’s no need to worry about specific shoes for evening chic.

Accessories

  • Nice Belt : Start with a stylish belt as a chic accessory.
  • Classic Watch: Add a classic watch for a touch of sophistication.
  • Subtle Cufflinks: Consider subtle cufflinks to enhance the refined look.
  • Sophisticated Pocket Square: Complete the ensemble with a sophisticated pocket square.
  • A tie: Include a tie to elevate the outfit.
  • Coordinate Colors and Style: Ensure accessories complement your outfit’s overall color scheme and style for a polished appearance.

Men’s Cruise Packing List

The exact quantities will depend on your personal preferences, activities planned, and whether you plan to do laundry during the cruise. However, here’s a suggested quantity for a 7-day cruise:

  • (5-7) T-shirts
  • (2) Button Downs
  • (3) Polo Shirts
  • (2) Swim trunks
  • (1-2) Chinos/Dressy Pants
  • (1-2) Jeans
  • (1-2 pairs) Gym Clothes
  • (1) Suit or Blazer (if planning a formal or chic night)
  • Underwear and socks – Enough for each day, plus 1-2 extra days just in case
  • (1) Light jacket, sweater or hoodie
  • (1) Rain jacket or windbreaker
  • (1) Hat with brim
  • (1) Sunglasses
  • (1 pair) Comfortable walking shoes/sneakers
  • (1 pair) Dress shoes (if planning formal or chic nights)
  • (1 pair) Flip Flops / Sandals

AcCessories

  • Tie (optional)
  • Cufflinks (if needed for formal night)
  • Pocket Square (if needed for suit or blazer)

Miscellaneous

  • Travel documents (passport, cruise documents, ID)
  • Travel-sized Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Medications – As needed
  • Travel-sized laundry detergent
  • Power strip/adapter
  • Reusable Water Bottle
  • Camera/phone and chargers, including portable charger
  • Travel Backpack

Tips for Packing Men’s Cruise Wardrobe Efficiently

man stuffing clothes into suitcase

  • Pack versatile pieces in complementary colors that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. You want to create a capsule wardrobe. This can help you save space in your luggage and ensure that you have enough clothing options without overpacking.
  • Learn to roll or fold your clothes to save space.
  • Buy compression packing cubes .
  • Check the weather forecast for your itinerary and pack accordingly. Bring lightweight clothing for warmer climates and layering pieces for cooler temperatures.
  • Bring comfortable shoes for walking and exploring in port and dress shoes for formal dining nights.
  • Don’t forget swimwear (we have done this): Pack swim trunks or board shorts for pool and beach days.
  • Pack accessories: belt, ties, watch…etc.
  • Pack clothing that meets the dress code for each venue on board, including casual, smart casual, and formal attire.
  • Bring laundry detergent sheets to wash some items yourself in the cabin and consider your other options: Do they have laundry on the ship? (Princess, Carnival, and Disney cruise ships sometimes do) Are there mid-week specials for laundry? Sometimes, the cruise has a special promotion.
  • Don’t forget to add wrinkle-release spray to your packing list. It will come in handy.

male cruise passenger wearing a polo shirt on a cruise

How much clothing should I pack for a cruise?

As a general rule, you should plan to bring enough clothing to last for the duration of your cruise and include a few extra items in case of unexpected events or changes in weather. Of course, you should also consider whether you can do laundry.

Do you have to dress up every night on a cruise?

Dressing up every night on a cruise isn’t necessary. Most cruise lines have varying dress codes, allowing casual attire during the day and a more casual or “smart casual” look in the evening. Save the swim trunks for the daytime and wear nice pants at night.

Do you bring a suit on a cruise?

Bringing a suite on a cruise is optional. Dress codes on cruises vary by line and occasion. Mainstream cruise lines have shifted from formal to chic nights, permitting chinos, a button-down shirt, and dress shoes. Check your cruise line’s specific dress codes before packing.

What do men wear on a cruise for dinner?

Wear casual daytime cruise attire for buffet dinner—shorts and a t-shirt. If dining in the main or specialty restaurant, switch to long pants and a nice shirt based on the dress code policy.

Are jeans okay on a cruise?

YES. You can wear jeans on a cruise. We suggest leaning towards darker-colored jeans with no rips or holes in them.

Can I wear shorts to dinner on a cruise?

Men’s shorts are typically not permitted in main dining or specialty restaurants. If worn, you may be turned away and asked to change. Some exceptions may apply, such as on the first or last day of the cruise.

Is it okay if men wear Speedo on a cruise ship pool?

The acceptability of men wearing Speedos in a cruise ship pool depends on the specific cruise line’s dress code and policies. Some may restrict revealing swimwear, while others have more relaxed rules. If allowed, be mindful of fellow passengers, especially around children, and respect their comfort levels.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise

A Caribbean cruise offers a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and stunning tropical destinations…including Key West. While planning for your cruise, it's essential to consider what to wear to ensure you're comfortable, stylish, and prepared for the varying activities and climates.

What to Pack

Short Sleeve Linen Shirts

Long Sleeve Linen Shirts

All Terrain Cargo Shorts

Linen Drawstring Pants

Lightweight Sweater

Windbreaker

You’ll need to take into account the tropical weather, onboard activities, shore excursions, and evening events as well as a keen focus on lightweight, breathable fabrics, and versatile clothing that can be layered and mixed and matched. For Caribbean and tropical climates, linen is a staple throughout the trip.

Oranges

We’re breaking this down into three main “buckets” to help organize, as well as give you a few options to “freshen” up a bit.

Daytime Cruising

There are two different dynamics to daytime cruising.

Poolside: Easy enough…right? Well, we’re going to make it a bit easier.

Swimsuits are obvious. Have fun and make a statement with your trunks. Either understated or bold and tropical, roll a few up in your luggage and you are set.

Suntek Strawberry

The trick is mixing/matching a  linen shirt  as the cover-up. Tossing a couple of color-neutral short-sleeve linens can serve as the poolside and poolside bar cover-up, as well as be used in other settings. Or…go bright and bold with a  long-sleeve UPF  that can also protect you from the sun .

And…very seriously…remember a hat , polarized sunglasses, and quality sunscreen.

shirt and shorts

Casual Daytime :

Maybe hitting the poolside gets boring and you decide to take in on-board daytime activities. Maybe disembarking for a simple stroll and exploration in the port city. Your best bet is to go with  casual linen  and  cotton shorts .  Polos are ok, but it is going to become a mop. Going with a front-button shirt will give you more air movement and breathability, plus… no sweat popping through.

Shore Excursions

In contrast to the above-mentioned “stroll around the port city” attire, the focus here is on an active excursion. Hiking, zip-lining, biking, and other more physical excursions necessitate a change from the cool, casual daytime attire.

The priority here in shorts is rugged, lightweight, and quick-drying fabric. And…pockets. Preferably with one or two pocket zips to secure your IDs, credit cards, and cash. Unfortunately, it happens…something inadvertently drops out of a pocket or you cross paths with a pickpocket and your ship is pulling out in two hours.

Camp Shirt

For shirts, stick with ease and comfort. Front-button, lightweight fabrics such as viscose, linen, or lightweight cotton are the key. The beauty of a colorful camp shirt is in its relaxed design, a splash of color, or creative print to easily have your friends spot you in a crowd, and its ability to mix/match as a beach cover-up. These seaside-inspired Camp Shirt prints are excellent examples.

Evening Attire

Cropped Linen white pants

Most evenings on a Caribbean cruise follow a resort casual dress code. Men can wear khakis or linen pants with collared shirts or polo shirts. Avoid jeans and flip-flops.

Flamingo Linen Shirt

This is a great setting to go with one of the mix/match linen shirts you’ve packed. Linen beach pants, combined with an Ernest Accent Linen shirt provide the perfect pairing for a casual, relaxed evening meal and follow-on show and entertainment or a late-night drink.

Many cruise lines have formal nights where guests dress up for elegant dinners and events. Men should opt for suits, tuxedos, or dress pants paired with a dress shirt and tie. Best to check with your specific cruise line for their formal night guidelines.

Some cruises host theme nights such as tropical, wear all-white parties, or costume parties. Pack appropriate outfits to join in the fun and embrace the festive atmosphere. A lightweight, white linen shirt is an ideal packing choice.

Sweater

Consider situations where layering may come into play. While the Caribbean is generally warm, air-conditioned areas on board or cooler evenings may require a lightweight sweater, jacket, or even a windbreaker for the occasional blustery day.

Most importantly…plan to enjoy yourself !

Keep it simple. Focus on lightweight, breathable fabrics, and versatile clothing that can be layered and mixed, and matched. Consider the climate, daytime activities, evening events, and any specific dress codes outlined by your cruise line. By planning your wardrobe accordingly, you'll ensure comfort, style, and readiness for every aspect of your Caribbean adventure. So, get ready to soak up the sun, explore stunning destinations, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of your Caribbean cruise.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise – Cruise Outfit Ideas

What to wear on a Caribbean cruise

Sharing is caring!

Are you wondering what to wear on a Caribbean cruise? You’re in luck. I just back from a relaxing and fun cruise and I have a lot of tropical cruise outfits to share.

Since we cruise a lot, I build on my cruise wardrobe, and get a few new dresses, bathing suits, shoes or handbags as I need them. The weather for our 7 day November Caribbean cruise was perfect, at about 80-85F each day.

We cruised on Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam and brought outfits for the day, as well as 5 casual and 2 dressy evenings. I’ll also share some photos of the clothing my husband wore on our cruise.

Grand Cayman Ilana and Frank

Hopefully, these cruise outfit photos can give you some ideas for what to wear on your Caribbean cruise. When possible, I include links to the items included.

The weather was beautiful as we boarded the Nieuw Statendam in Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale. I wore a light floral sundress for my embarkation day outfit. I also rewore this dress later on during the week on a casual night in the main dining room .

Daytime Cruise Wear

Our 7 day cruise itinerary included 4 days in ports, and 3 sea days. Since the weather was sunny and hot most of the time, I wore swimsuits with cover ups most days. I bought a new black swimsuit that I love!

Here are a few photos from our days on the cruise ship.

This easy sundress is comfortable, has pockets and can even be worn as a cover up over a bathing suit.

It’s definitely one of the winners in my cruise wardrobe since I found it on Amazon a few months ago. It comes in a few patterns and colors as well.

The dress codes on our Holland America cruise were casual most nights, and dressy ( formal or gala nights ) for 2 nights.

Casual Evening Cruise Outfits

Here are some of the outfits my husband and I wore during the evening on our cruise. Dresses, tops and pants, and nice jeans are all perfect for evenings in the main dining room on most nights.

Formal Night – Gala Evening (dressy)

We dressed up for the first gala night, and had a wonderful dinner in the main dining room with new cruise friends.

We decided to go to Caneletto, an Italian specialty restaurant for the second formal night. We still dressed “nicely”, but skipped the longer evening dress I brought and the suit for my husband.

How Many Outfits Do You Need for a 7 Day Cruise?

As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to plan for 1 daytime outfit and one evening outfit per day. However, you can mix and match wardrobe pieces and rewear the same dress, shirt or pants later in the week. Looking at your cruise itinerary, potential excursions and activities will help you to plan your cruise wardrobe.

Remember to pack 2-3 bathing suits, to have a rotation if one is wet. Packing 1-2 swimsuit cover ups for sea days and beach days will come in handy.

One of my favorite cruise itineraries is a Caribbean cruise, in part because the cruise wear is easy to wear! From days on the cruise ship and in port, to dinners in the dining room or restaurants, resort style cruise outfits are perfect.

I hope this post and the photos gave you some ideas of what to wear and how to pack for your upcoming cruise.

Hey, guys! Are you planning to go on a cruise and wondering what to wear? Let’s talk cruise fashion for men so you can look your best on your trip.

First and foremost, make sure to pack clothes that are appropriate for the weather and activities, both onboard and on excursions. Check your cruise line’s dress code well before your cruise so you can be sure you have everything you need. You don’t want to be caught wearing shorts at a specialty restaurant, or long pants on a beach day.

What Men Wear on Cruises

For daytime activities, go for casual wear like shorts, T-shirts, and polo shirts. Don’t forget to bring comfortable footwear like sneakers or sandals. If you plan to go to the fitness center or participate in sports, pack workout clothes as well.

On dressier nights, a blazer or sports coat paired with dress pants and a collared shirt is a great option. You can also add a tie to dress it up even more, and be sure to bring dress shoes that match.

The luxury cruise lines have formal nights and require men to wear a suit and tie, or at least a dress shirt and dress pants. If you choose to bring a suit, make sure it fits properly and is well-pressed. Although the mainstream and premier cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes, some people still dress in formal wear; it’s just not required on those lines.

Also, don’t forget to pack swimwear and beachwear for days spent lounging by the pool or on the beach. Board shorts, swim trunks, and T-shirts are all great options.

Choosing What to Pack

We’re assuming this is a seven-night cruise to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Mexican Riviera, Bermuda, or the Mediterranean and are planning accordingly. There are usually five or six port days where you’ll be going on excursions, and a sea day or two where you’ll stay onboard. In the evenings, dinners will usually be casual unless you go to a specialty restaurant or it’s a dressy night.

I’ve chosen items in mostly blues and tans that mix and match well. A link to the retailer is listed below each item in case you want to check it out.

Store inventories are fluid, so you may click on an item to shop it and find it’s no longer available. In any case, you can see the look I was going for.

Let’s start with some bottoms: three pairs of shorts, a pair of khakis, and jeans.

Navy shorts

Now, let’s find some shirts. Three T-shirts, one long-sleeved shirt, two camp shirts, a polo, and a graphic tee.

Blue tee

And some shoes and accessories: sunglasses, watch, belt, loafers, boat shoes, sneakers, and a couple of ball caps.

Sunglasses 2

Plus, an optional blazer, a hoodie, and a swimsuit.

What To Pack For a Caribbean Cruise: 10 Glorious Days

Outfits we can make.

Now, let’s have some fun and put together some outfits.

On port days you will likely be taking excursions, so you will want to be comfortable in the heat, wear good walking shoes, and protect yourself from the sun.

Burgundy tee 1

On days at sea, you will want to be comfortable, whether the weather is hot or cooler. Plus, if you’re staying inside, the ship will be chilly.

Jeans 2

Poolside or a Beach Day

For the pool or beach, a swimsuit, tee, hat, and sunglasses are the best.

Working Out

If you work out, you will want clothing especially for that.

Casual Evenings

For casual evenings, you may be able to wear shorts if you are eating in a casual restaurant, but for a main dining room, you will want to wear long pants.

Dressier Evenings

If you are dining at a specialty restaurant or going to the theater, you will want to dress up a little. Up your game with a button-up shirt, khakis, and blazer.

Travel Outfit

For travel, you want to be comfortable but also look nice. This outfit will accomplish both.

Final Thoughts on Cruise Fashion For Men

Things you can add if you’re not packing light: another pair of shorts, a couple more T-shirts, another pair of swim trunks, and a pair of flip-flops or sandals. Don’t forget something to sleep in, underwear, and socks…especially dress socks.

In summary, cruise fashion for men isn’t that difficult. Simply pack a variety of items you can mix and match for different occasions, and make sure they fit well and are appropriate for the activity or dress code. Add some personal flair with accessories like a statement watch, but don’t overdo it.

And most importantly, have fun and enjoy your cruise.

I Sailed the Caribbean for 12 Days: All the Stylish Caribbean Cruise Outfits You Need to Pack

Self-declaring as “not a cruise person,” the opportunity to dig out my chicest resort wear became the saving grace for a 14-day Caribbean cruise I accidentally ended up on.

Yes, accidentally. A week before setting sail on what was supposed to be an adventure sailing nearly the entirety of the Amazon River, thanks to an extremely generous gift from my boyfriend’s grandparents, Viking Cruises canceled the Amazon portion of my Amazon cruise, rerouting the ship to sit in the Caribbean for close to two weeks instead.

Eva Phan wearing an all-white Caribbean cruise outfit in Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Though it wasn’t the trip of a lifetime I expected, I still had a fabulous, memorable time filled with tropical Caribbean cruise outfits, phenomenal people, and of course, a few noteworthy stops in Dominica, St. John, and St. Lucia, amongst others.

As a first-time cruiser, packing for a Caribbean cruise in the winter was daunting, especially as many cruise ship cabins have limited space, to say the least, even when booking with those more giving with space like Viking.

Let my first-hand experience planning Caribbean cruise outfits to the tee (shirt) help you stay stylish when sailing this lush region:

Casual Caribbean cruise outfit consisting of a crop top, shorts, and statement earrings.

Embarkation Day Outfit

Embarkation day can be a real waiting game, between waking up early to wait to enter the cruise terminal, check-in, passport checks, and security. Once you’re through all that, there’s of course, the obligatory muster drill and waiting period until your cabin is actually available.

Stick with something stylish enough to wear sightseeing after check-in ends but comfortable enough to sit through long waiting periods.

If your port of embarkation is in tropical weather, such as in Florida or Puerto Rico, go for lightweight sundresses or shorts and a cute top paired with cushy sandals or leather sneakers.

If you’re embarking from cooler weather, such as from New York, a sweater dress or cozy top paired with jeans and booties or sneakers might be more appropriate—especially if you’re taking a Caribbean cruise in the winter.

I embarked in San Juan, Puerto Rico, so my Caribbean cruise outfit for the day was a white linen crop top paired with high-waisted white cotton shorts and white leather sneakers . I finished the look with big statement earrings to give it a little extra flair.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise During the Day

Trying to figure out what to wear on a Caribbean cruise in the winter is much easier than in other seasons. Pack your trunk for a glamorous whirl around the Caribbean’s blue skies and clear seas. Visiting from December to May, you’ll be greeted with warm weather and mostly dry skies.

June to November leaves more to be desired. The Caribbean, though still warm, enters hurricane season, often seeing turbulent weather, including high winds and heavy rain. Many Caribbean cruises don’t sail at all in these months.

During the day, your Caribbean cruise outfits should include warm-weather staples like sundresses, crop tops or sleeveless shirts, shorts, skirts, and lots of swimwear. While packing, include an oversized linen button-down —the ideal layer over a sundress or crop top and an excellent makeshift swimsuit coverup.

Stick to natural fibers like cotton, linen, and bamboo for breathability in the Caribbean’s thick humidity.

To be honest, most of my Caribbean cruise outfits during the day consisted of swimwear, swimwear, and more swimwear—bikinis, one-pieces, crocheted coverups, breezy sarongs, you name it.

Bring at least one pair of sandals for walking, rubber flip-flops for the beach or pool, and leather sneakers for daytime use.

Caribbean Cruise Formal Night Outfits for Women

Depending on your ship, your Caribbean cruise might include one or more formal nights—your excuse to go all out with your Caribbean cruise outfits.

Shimmering ball gowns, crisp tuxedos, and the like are in order for this black-tie dress code. Your ship’s formal night may also allow for elegant cocktail dresses or a simple suit if more relaxed.

A black-tie look isn’t one you’re likely to find on shore when sailing the Caribbean islands. Plan your formal look in advance, including a floor-length gown or formal jumpsuit, statement jewelry, high heels, and minaudière.

Caribbean Cruise Outfit Ideas for Excursions

Being an accidental Caribbean cruiser, I underestimated just how important it is to book excursions for most ports of call—and book them in advance.

Snorkeling, scuba diving, catamaran sailing, island tours, hiking, cooking classes, and visits to beach clubs at large resorts are among the most popular Caribbean cruise excursions.

Casual, leisurely excursions, like a cooking class or island tour by car, are easy to plan for—if there’s no active component, wear one of your daytime Caribbean cruise outfits.

More active excursions, such as hiking or cliff jumping, require a little more planning. Pack activewear such as a sports bra, leggings, and gym shoes, in addition to bathing suits and a swimsuit coverup.

Consider your excursion itinerary when planning your outfits. When I visited Titou Gorge in Dominica during my cruise, I needed to bring swimwear and regular clothes. Having a wet bag was essential for keeping my soaked swimsuit separated from everything else.

As I learned the hard way, the rainforests in the Caribbean are havens for bugs. If you’re venturing into the rainforest on an active excursion, pack longer clothing, such as full-length leggings, rather than running shorts or bike shorts to minimize bug bites.

If your cruise is during shoulder season when the Caribbean receives rain, bring gear such as a packable poncho, rain jacket, and waterproof shoes to stay dry during your shore excursions.

Caribbean Cruise Outfits for Sea Days

I didn’t understand why so many cruise enthusiasts selected itineraries specifically for precious sea days before setting sail on my first Caribbean cruise.

The pure sailing days offer a unique experience to lay back, relax, and enjoy the ship and its excellent service—it’s truly luxury, especially if you’re used to a fast-paced lifestyle.

Maybe it’s a trip to the spa followed by a cocktail by the pool or shuffleboard on the sports deck followed by a night hiding out in the theater. Sometimes, ships plan for special activities on sea days, like when Viking Cruises hosted a poolside barbecue with the ship’s band on my Caribbean cruise.

Your Caribbean cruise outfits for sea days should be casual and comfortable. You can wear something similar to what you would wear onshore during the day or take an even more laid-back approach with breezy elastic waist linen pants or chic lightweight loungewear.

Best Shoes to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise

My cabin looked like something out of Carrie Bradshaw’s closet during my Caribbean cruise.

That’s right, I felt the need to bring all the footwear options, and I don’t regret it in the slightest.

Two pairs of espadrille wedges, one pair of high-heeled sandals, one pair of flat leather sandals, a pair of rubber flip-flops, white leather sneakers, and gym shoes went into my suitcase for my two-week-long Caribbean cruise, and I wore all of them multiple times, some nearly every day.

Okay, maybe I tend to overplan my shoes, but what can I say? My shoes are Choos and I hardly leave home without fabulous footwear—a friend once asked if I was sick when I tried.

Stripping away my penchant for footwear options, at a minimum, pack the following shoes for a Caribbean cruise:

  • A good pair of walking shoes
  • Rubber sandals for the beach or pool
  • Nice sandals that can be dressed up for dinner
  • Gym shoes if your walking shoes are not
  • Formal shoes, like high heels , if your cruise includes a black-tie night

Eva Phan wearing a blue mini dress, one of the best Caribbean cruise outfits for dinner.

Caribbean Cruise Dress Code

Dress codes are not created equal in the Caribbean—they vary widely by ship both in standards and enforcement. Study up on yours before packing for your cruise.

As a general rule of thumb, most ships keep to a casual dress code during the day. Casual clothing may be allowed at night, or the ship may enforce a slightly dressier standard. The dress code may fluctuate by restaurant if you’re on a large Caribbean cruise ship with several dining options.

Many ships have at least one restaurant where casual clothing is allowed at night if you’re not one for dressing up.

In addition to standard day and night dress codes, some ships have formal nights with black-tie dress codes or special event nights with separate standards entirely. For example, Virgin Cruises does an iconic Scarlet Night on their adult-only Caribbean cruises, during which the whole ship is ordered to dress up in their best bright red looks.

On my Caribbean cruise, casual clothing was allowed during the day and at the buffet restaurant for dinner. Activewear and swimwear were not allowed anywhere on the ship besides the pool deck or gym.

For dinner, shorts, jeans, and flip-flops were strictly off-limits in all restaurants except for the auxiliary buffet restaurant. Men needed to be in a collared shirt and slacks, while women could wear a nice blouse with trousers or a skirt, or a dress. The dinner dress code was strictly enforced, while the daytime dress code tended to be lenient.

Caribbean Cruise Packing Tips

How to plan caribbean cruise outfits.

For long cruises over 10 days in length, packing enough daytime Caribbean cruise outfits while working with limited cabin space is a delicate art.

Cut down on the amount of clothing you need to bring for your cruise wardrobe by ensuring that most of your clothing can be paired with at least two other separates (i.e., one top matches two pairs of shorts, and one skirt works with at least two tops).

Doing Laundry on a Caribbean Cruise

While packing your Caribbean cruise outfits, consider whether your ship has laundry. If your ship includes free laundry as an amenity, you may get away with packing less.

If your ship does not include free laundry, doing laundry can be pricey. To save space, consider packing clothing that can easily be hand-washed in your room’s shower or bathtub instead.

Keep in mind that some cruise wear, like swimwear, will take longer to hang dry than others. Bring at least three to four swimsuits to wash and rotate through your cruise, so you’ll never have to wear one that’s still wet.

Eva Phan wearing a white bikini while in Grenada on a West Indies Caribbean cruise.

Pack with Travel Organizers

My suitcase was a jumbled mess of clothing, jewelry, shoes, and toiletries before begrudgingly giving travel organizers a try.

Now, I’m a believer (though I hate to admit it).

Suitcase accessories like packing cubes and compact jewelry organizers can make unpacking and repacking your luggage a breeze in a tight space. They can also help you stay organized during your cruise.

For example, this clothing organizer can be removed from your suitcase as-is and hung up in your cabin’s closet. When your cruise is over, it folds back down to be neatly tucked away back in your luggage.

My favorite travel jewelry box is now a must on all my trips—it’s small and lightweight but sits perfectly on a dressing table, keeping all of my favorite baubles easy to see and tangle-free.

Use packing cubes to separate all of your clothing by type. When you’re loading clothing into your cabin’s dresser, unpacking will become mindless as you won’t need to sort.

Bringing a curling and flat iron cover is necessary for packing your hair styling tools. A quality one will have a heat-resistant lining that lets you put your tools back in while still hot. It sounds unnecessary, but during my cruise, it was a massive help for saving valuable bathroom counter space while getting ready.

Save Money by Purchasing Everything in Advance

Most cruise ships have general stores with essentials like sunscreen and feminine hygiene products for those in a pinch, but these come with a steep price tag.

On my cruise, a small bottle of sunscreen was $30 USD, and aloe vera was even more. Sunscreen in our ports of call was cheaper but very low quality and a premium compared to stores at home.

Though we had to give in and buy an $8 bottle of awful sunscreen after our Grenada tour , we luckily bought aloe vera from CVS in San Juan before the ship left port, saving us some money after sailing all day in Saint Lucia left us burnt to a crisp. We ordered cruise essentials from Amazon last minute, which saved us from having to spend even more.

In addition to your toiletries, consider buying extras like snorkeling gear and water shoes before leaving home. In my experience, water sports gear is surprisingly tricky to come by on some of the Caribbean islands, and when you do, it is pricey.

Pro tip: If your Caribbean cruise is embarking in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a well-priced Walmart (with $12 snorkeling gear, sunscreen, and other necessities) is an inexpensive Uber ride away from port.

Caribbean Cruise Outfits: FAQ

In the winter, the Caribbean tends to have warm weather and little rain. Bring lightweight resort wear such as sleeveless tops, shorts, sundresses, and sandals for exploring during the day, plus a few more formal options for nighttime events.

Plan to wear at least one outfit during the day, one outfit at night, and possibly an additional outfit for an excursion per day on your Caribbean cruise. Pack separates that can be mixed and matched with each other. Bring enough clothing for seven daytime and seven nighttime outfits for a week-long Caribbean cruise.

Packing for a Caribbean Cruise: Tips and Advice

Packing for a Caribbean cruise requires some careful planning to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Here are some helpful tips and advice to keep in mind as you prepare for your cruise:

  • Check the weather forecast: Before you start packing, take a look at the weather forecast for your destination. This will give you an idea of the temperatures you can expect and help you determine the types of clothing you’ll need.
  • Pack lightweight and breathable fabrics: The Caribbean is known for its warm and humid climate, so be sure to pack clothing made from lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials will keep you cool and comfortable throughout your trip.
  • Opt for versatile pieces: To make the most of your suitcase space, choose clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. This way, you can pack fewer items without sacrificing style.
  • Don’t forget the essentials: While it’s important to pack stylish clothing, don’t forget to include the essentials. This includes undergarments, socks, pajamas, and any necessary accessories like hats or sunglasses.
  • Consider the activities and excursions: Think about the activities and excursions you have planned during your cruise. Are you going snorkeling, hiking, or exploring ancient ruins? Make sure to pack appropriate clothing and footwear for these activities.
  • Leave room for souvenirs: Chances are you’ll want to bring back some souvenirs from your Caribbean cruise. Leave some space in your suitcase for these items or consider packing a foldable duffle bag to carry your purchases.

Remember, it’s always better to slightly overpack than to find yourself without essential items. However, try to strike a balance and avoid overloading your suitcase with unnecessary items. By following these packing tips and advice, you’ll be well-prepared for your Caribbean cruise and ready to make lasting memories in style.

Clothing Essentials for a Caribbean Cruise

When it comes to clothing essentials for a Caribbean cruise, it’s important to focus on comfort, versatility, and style. Here are the must-have items to include in your suitcase:

  • Lightweight Tops and T-shirts: Pack a variety of lightweight tops and t-shirts in breathable fabrics. Opt for colorful prints and patterns to embrace the tropical vibes.
  • Shorts and Skirts: Bring a few pairs of shorts and skirts that you can easily mix and match with your tops. Look for options made of lightweight materials like cotton or linen.
  • Maxi Dresses and Sundresses: Maxi dresses and sundresses are perfect for daytime activities and can easily transition to evening wear with the right accessories.
  • Lightweight Pants or Capris: Include a pair or two of lightweight pants or capris for cooler evenings or for when you want a break from shorts.
  • Light Sweater or Cardigan: Evenings on a cruise ship can sometimes be cooler, so pack a lightweight sweater or cardigan to layer over your outfits.
  • Swimsuit Cover-ups: Don’t forget to pack a few swimsuit cover-ups for lounging by the pool or heading to the beach. Choose options that are lightweight and easy to take on and off.
  • Activewear: If you plan on exercising or participating in active excursions, pack some activewear including leggings, athletic shorts, and moisture-wicking tops.
  • Rain Jacket or Poncho: While the Caribbean is generally sunny, it’s always good to be prepared for unexpected rain showers. Pack a lightweight rain jacket or a poncho that can easily fit in your bag.

Remember to pack enough underwear and socks to last your entire trip, as well as sleepwear for a comfortable night’s rest. Don’t forget to include a hat or visor to protect yourself from the sun, along with sunglasses and sunscreen for added protection.

By packing these essential clothing items, you’ll be well-prepared for the warm Caribbean climate and ready for any activities or events that come your way.

Swimwear and Beachwear

When it comes to a Caribbean cruise, swimwear and beachwear are essential items to pack. Whether you’re lounging by the pool onboard the ship or enjoying the pristine beaches at your ports of call, you’ll want to feel comfortable and stylish. Here are some tips for selecting the perfect swimwear and beachwear for your cruise:

  • Swimsuits: Pack a few different swimsuits to suit your style and preferences. Whether you prefer a bikini, a one-piece, or a tankini, choose options that make you feel confident and comfortable.
  • Cover-ups: Swimwear cover-ups are versatile and can be worn over your swimsuit when you’re not in the water. Look for lightweight and flowy cover-ups that provide sun protection and allow for easy transitions from the beach to other activities.
  • Sarongs and Pareos: Sarongs and pareos are versatile pieces that can be tied around your waist as a skirt, draped over your shoulders as a shawl, or used as a beach blanket. They add a touch of style and can be easily packed in your beach bag.
  • Sun Hats and Visors: Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed sun hat or a visor. Not only will it shield your face and neck from harmful UV rays, but it will also add a fashionable touch to your beach attire.
  • Beach Bags: A spacious and sturdy beach bag is a must-have for carrying all your essentials to the beach or pool. Look for a bag with compartments to keep your belongings organized and consider a waterproof option to protect your valuables from sand and water.
  • Beach Towels: While most cruise ships provide towels for use on the pool deck, it’s always a good idea to bring your own beach towel for shore excursions or when you want to relax on the beach.
  • Water Shoes or Sandals: Depending on the type of beach you’re visiting, water shoes or sandals can provide comfort and protection for your feet. They are especially useful if you plan on snorkeling or exploring rocky areas.
  • Snorkeling Gear: If you enjoy snorkeling, consider bringing your own snorkeling gear, including a mask, snorkel, and fins. While most cruise ships offer rentals, having your own gear ensures the perfect fit and allows you to explore at your own pace.

By packing a variety of swimwear and beachwear options, along with the necessary accessories, you’ll be ready to make the most of your time in the water and on the sand. Enjoy the sun, the sea, and the breathtaking beauty of the Caribbean!

Casual Daytime Outfits

During your Caribbean cruise, you’ll spend plenty of time exploring the ship, participating in onboard activities, and venturing out to explore the ports of call. Casual daytime outfits that are comfortable and stylish are a must. Here are some ideas for putting together effortless and chic looks for your daytime adventures:

  • Summer Dresses: Pack a few lightweight and comfortable summer dresses. Opt for breezy fabrics and vibrant prints that reflect the tropical vibes of the Caribbean. Midi and maxi dresses are great options for both comfort and style.
  • Shorts and Tops: Create easy and versatile outfits by pairing shorts with different tops. Choose from tank tops, lightweight blouses, or casual t-shirts. Add a belt to elevate the look and complete the ensemble with sandals or sneakers.
  • Romper or Jumpsuit: Rompers and jumpsuits are perfect for a casual and trendy daytime outfit. Look for ones in light fabrics that are easy to move in. Pair them with comfortable sandals or flip-flops for a laid-back yet fashionable look.
  • Denim or Linen Pants: If you prefer pants over skirts or shorts, pack a couple of pairs of lightweight denim or linen pants. They are versatile and can be styled with different tops, making it easy to create effortless and comfortable daytime outfits.
  • T-shirts and Shorts: For a relaxed and effortless look, pair comfortable t-shirts with shorts. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Add some accessories, such as a statement necklace or a colorful scarf, to elevate the outfit.
  • Activewear: If you plan to be active during your cruise, pack some comfortable activewear. Leggings, yoga pants, or athletic shorts paired with moisture-wicking tops are perfect for exercising, walking around the ship, or participating in active shore excursions.
  • Lightweight Cardigans or Kimonos: In case the temperatures are cooler or you want some extra coverage, pack a lightweight cardigan or a kimono. These pieces can be thrown over any outfit to add style and provide some warmth when needed.

Don’t forget to accessorize your casual daytime outfits with sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and comfortable footwear such as sandals or sneakers. Remember that the key to dressing for daytime activities on a Caribbean cruise is to keep it comfortable, stylish, and adaptable to different situations.

Evening Wear and Formal Nights

One of the highlights of a Caribbean cruise is getting dressed up for the evening events and formal nights on board. While the dress code may vary depending on the cruise line, here are some general guidelines and outfit ideas for evening wear:

  • Cocktail Dresses: For a semi-formal evening, a cocktail dress is a classic and elegant choice. Opt for a knee-length or midi dress in a sophisticated fabric such as satin or silk. Choose a style that flatters your body shape and complements your personal style.
  • Formal Gowns: On formal nights, a floor-length formal gown is appropriate. Look for dresses with elegant details like sequins, lace, or beading. Choose a color that suits your complexion and makes you feel glamorous.
  • Suit or Dress Pants with Blouse: If dresses aren’t your preference, a suit or dress pants paired with a blouse can create a polished and sophisticated look. Opt for tailored pants in a neutral color and pair them with a stylish blouse or top.
  • Black Tie Optional: If your cruise has a black-tie optional dress code, consider wearing a formal gown or a black-tie appropriate cocktail dress. Men can opt for a tuxedo or a dark suit paired with a formal dress shirt and a bowtie.
  • Accessories: Enhance your evening outfit with statement jewelry, such as a necklace, earrings, or bracelet. Choose accessories that complement your attire without overpowering it. Don’t forget to wear comfortable yet stylish shoes to complete your look.
  • Men’s Evening Attire: Men should pack dress shirts, trousers, and a blazer or suit for the evenings. For formal nights, opt for a tuxedo or a dark suit with a formal shirt and tie. Add a pocket square or cufflinks for a sophisticated touch.
  • Keep It Versatile: To make the most of your suitcase space, choose evening wear that can be mixed and matched or dressed up or down with accessories. This way, you can create different looks without packing multiple formal outfits.

It’s important to check the dress code specific to your cruise line and plan accordingly. Some cruise lines may have themed nights, such as tropical or white parties, which would require different attire. By following the dress code guidelines and adding your personal touch, you’ll be ready to enjoy the glamorous evenings and formal nights on your Caribbean cruise.

Footwear for a Caribbean Cruise

Choosing the right footwear for a Caribbean cruise is crucial to ensure both comfort and style throughout your trip. Here are some essential footwear options to pack for your cruise:

  • Sandals: Sandals are a versatile and essential item for a Caribbean cruise. Opt for comfortable and supportive sandals that can be worn during the day for exploring the ship or walking around the ports. Look for options with adjustable straps and cushioned insoles for added comfort.
  • Flip-Flops: Flip-flops are perfect for casual beach days or hanging out by the pool. They are lightweight, easy to slip on and off, and can handle sand and water with ease. Pack a pair or two in different colors to coordinate with your swimwear.
  • Walking Shoes: For shore excursions or days when you plan on doing a lot of walking, pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes or sneakers. Look for lightweight and breathable options with good arch support and cushioning.
  • Water Shoes: If you plan on snorkeling, kayaking, or participating in water sports, consider bringing water shoes. These protective and quick-drying shoes are designed to provide grip on wet surfaces and protect your feet from rocks or coral.
  • Dress Shoes: For formal evenings or special events onboard, pack a pair of dress shoes such as heels for women or dress shoes for men. Choose a style that complements your formal attire and is comfortable enough to wear for an extended period.
  • Casual Shoes: Alongside your sandals, it’s a good idea to bring a pair of comfortable casual shoes that can be worn with your daytime outfits. This could be canvas shoes, boat shoes, or slip-on shoes that offer both style and comfort.
  • Athletic Shoes: If you plan on using the gym or participating in any fitness classes, bring a pair of athletic shoes specifically designed for exercise. These shoes provide the necessary support and stability for physical activities.
  • Extra Considerations: Don’t forget to pack a few pairs of socks to go with your sneakers or walking shoes. Additionally, if you have any specific needs, such as orthopedic shoes or inserts, be sure to include them to ensure maximum comfort throughout your cruise.

Remember to pack a variety of footwear options to cater to different activities and occasions. Having the right footwear will not only keep your feet comfortable but also allow you to fully enjoy all the adventures and experiences that your Caribbean cruise has to offer.

Accessories and Extras to Consider

When packing for a Caribbean cruise, it’s important to consider the accessories and extras that can enhance your overall experience. These items can add functionality, style, and convenience to your trip. Here are some accessories and extras to consider including in your suitcase:

  • Hats and Visors: Protect yourself from the sun by packing a wide-brimmed hat or a visor. Not only do they shield your face and neck from harmful UV rays, but they also add a fashionable touch to your outfits.
  • Sunglasses: Don’t forget to bring a pair of stylish sunglasses to protect your eyes from the bright sun. Look for sunglasses with UV protection to ensure optimal eye safety.
  • Scarves and Wraps: Scarves and lightweight wraps are versatile accessories that can be used to add warmth on cooler evenings, cover your shoulders in places of worship, or simply add a pop of color to your outfits.
  • Jewelry: Pack a selection of jewelry pieces to enhance your outfits. Statement necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings can elevate your look and add a touch of elegance to both casual and formal ensembles.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is essential during your Caribbean cruise. Bring a reusable water bottle to fill up and carry with you throughout the day. It’s an eco-friendly choice and will help you save money on purchasing single-use plastic bottles.
  • Travel Adapter and Power Strip: Ensure you have the necessary adapters to charge all your electronic devices. A power strip can also come in handy since cabins often have limited outlets.
  • Day Bag or Backpack: Invest in a lightweight and durable day bag or backpack for exploring ports of call or carrying essentials during your excursions. Look for one with multiple compartments and comfortable straps for convenience.
  • Medications and First Aid Kit: Pack any necessary medications and a small first aid kit that includes essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and motion sickness medication. It’s better to be prepared for unexpected situations.
  • Electronics: Don’t forget to pack your camera or smartphone for capturing memorable moments. Additionally, consider bringing a portable charger to ensure your devices stay powered up throughout the day.
  • Books or E-Readers: If you enjoy reading, bring a book or an e-reader to keep yourself entertained during downtime or while lounging by the pool.

These accessories and extras can enhance your Caribbean cruise experience, making your trip more convenient, stylish, and enjoyable. Remember to pack them alongside your clothing essentials and other travel necessities for a well-rounded and unforgettable vacation.

Dress Code Guidelines for Different Cruise Lines

When packing for a Caribbean cruise, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the dress code guidelines specific to your cruise line. While the dress codes may vary, here are some general guidelines for popular cruise lines:

1. Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival is known for its relaxed and casual vibe, with most nights being “Cruise Casual.” This typically means resort-style attire, such as sundresses, khakis, polos, or nice jeans. However, Carnival also has some “Cruise Elegant” nights, where passengers have the option to dress up in formal attire or opt for cocktail dresses and suits.

2. Royal Caribbean International: Royal Caribbean has a mix of casual, smart casual, and formal nights. Casual attire includes resort wear, shorts, and t-shirts. Smart casual nights call for dresses, skirts or pants paired with blouses for women, and slacks with collared shirts for men. On formal nights, passengers can dress in formal gowns, cocktail dresses, or suits and ties.

3. Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Cruise Line follows a “Freestyle Cruising” concept, offering guests the freedom to dress as they please. Casual attire is the norm, with resort wear, shorts, and t-shirts. Smart casual attire is suggested for specialty dining restaurants, while formal nights are optional and allow passengers to dress up if they choose.

4. Princess Cruises: Princess Cruises has a smart casual dress code most evenings, with resort wear, dresses, skirts, or slacks with blouses for women and collared shirts with slacks for men. They also have formal nights, where passengers can wear cocktail dresses, gowns, or suits.

5. Holland America Line: Holland America Line has a formal, smart casual, and casual dress code. Formal nights call for cocktail dresses or gowns for women and tuxedos or suits for men. Smart casual attire includes skirts or slacks with blouses for women and collared shirts with slacks for men. Casual nights allow for resort wear, jeans, and t-shirts.

It is essential to review the dress code guidelines provided by your cruise line before your trip to ensure that you pack the appropriate clothing for each evening. Some cruise lines may have specific themed nights or events, so it’s worth checking for any additional wardrobe considerations.

Remember that while it’s important to adhere to the dress code, comfort is key. Choose fabrics that are lightweight and breathable, and select clothing options that make you feel confident and at ease. Things to Consider

  • Your clothing choices will depend on your ports of call and the likely weather conditions.
  • For cruising in hotter climes opt for shorts and short-sleeved shirts in light natural fabrics.
  • In cooler destinations you'll prefer trousers, long-sleeved shirts and jackets in thicker weights.
  • Clever layering is the best way to cope with changeable weather conditions – e.g. wear a jacket over a fleece, over a t-shirt.
  • Consider the activities you plan to do off ship – will you need particular clothing or footwear?
  • Check the evening dress codes – these vary between cruise line and ship and may be strictly enforced. Sports and beach wear is generally not allowed in the evenings, and jackets and ties may be required on formal nights.
  • The amount of food you can eat on a cruise is all part of the appeal; we recommend you pack clothes with comfortable waistbands!
  • Pick a simple colour scheme of neutrals plus one or two statement shades if you like. Make sure all your clothes co-ordinate so they can be mixed and matched.
  • Remember you will need an outfit to travel in! Wear your bulkiest clothes and shoes where possible.

What We Would Pack For A Cruise

Swimwear

Casual Tops

Pack simple tops in your favourite colours that will match your trousers and shorts. Collared t-shirts or shirts can be worn for casual evenings, then wear by day for sightseeing. Depending on the climate choose from long or short-sleeved, or a mixture.

Suggested buy : Calvin Klein Men's Polo with Uv Protection on Amazon

Swimwear

Smart Shirts

Choose smart shirts that can be dressed down with jeans or up with trousers. Short sleeved are fine in warmer weather, but don't forget a dress shirt or similar if you're taking a dinner jacket or suit (see below).

Suggested buy : Russell Long Sleeve Fitted Shirt by Amazon

Swimwear

Packaway Jacket

A light packaway raincoat is a good idea to carry with you on day trips – it's ideal in case the weather changes quickly or you experience a sudden downpour. You can layer up underneath for warmth if necessary, or opt for a more substantial jacket in cooler climes.

Check out : Result Waterproof Jacket by Amazon

Swimwear

Essential for sun protection in hot weather or to keep out the cold and wet in cooler regions. It's usually windy at sea, so choose a style that stays on securely – our Breezy Sun Hat features a chin strap, so it's great for outdoor pursuits.

Suggested Buy : Dorfman Pacific Men's Safari Hat on Amazon

Swimwear

Smart Shoes

Pack one formal pair to go with your suit. We love Hotter shoes which are really lightweight and comfy, even on warm evenings.

Suggested buy : Lance Shoes by Hotter

Swimwear

Take some non-slip comfy flats for daytime on deck, easy exploring off ship, and casual evenings.

Suggested buy : Marine Deck Shoes by Hotter

Swimwear

Walking Shoes or Trainers

If you plan to do lots of walking on shore you'll need some active shoes. Closed-toe are best on dusty roads, and if you're heading off the beaten track do make sure you have something sturdy and supportive that are suited to the terrain.

These are comfy : Logan Sneakers by Hotter

Swimwear

Tailored Shorts

For warmer weather add in another pair of shorts. Make them tailored as an option for casual evening wear where permitted.

Suggested buy : RVCA Flat Front Twill Shorts by Nordstrom

Swimwear

It's extremely bright at sea when the sun's out as the rays reflect off the water. If you want to admire the views then sunglasses are essential.

We love : Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer by Amazon

Swimwear

Good sunscreen is essential in hotter climes, and don't get caught out on cloudy days either – you can still get burnt. Remember that water will reflect the sun's rays too. Choose a product with a high SPF (protects from UVB rays) and also look for the star or PA rating which indicates protection from UVA.

Suggested buy : SPF 30 PA+++ Water Resistant Sunscreen by Murad

Swimwear

Essential for lazy days of sun-bathing, by the ship's pool or in beach destinations.

Suggested buy : Sandbar Swim Trunks by MaddaFella

Swimwear

Casual Trousers or Shorts

These should be practical for days out. Consider the type of activities you will do – are they city-based or more rural/active? Choose fabrics that dry quickly in case of rain. Styles with detachable legs are a good option for varied temperatures. You might opt for shorts in hotter climes, but trousers are good protection against sun and insects.

Suggested buy : Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible Pant by Amazon

Swimwear

Some cruise lines have a ‘smart' dress code between casual and formal. On these nights a jacket may be required (with or without a tie). Team it with your smart-casual trousers and deck shoes. You may opt for this look on ‘casual' nights too.

Try these : Trim Fit Graph Print Blazer by Nordstrom

Swimwear

Smart-Casual Trousers

Choose a pair that are comfy for day wear (team with a t-shirt and walking shoes) but can also be worn to dinner with smart shoes and a shirt. Smart dark jeans would work well, or try a lighter Chino style in warmer weather. On some ships men are required to wear long trousers (not shorts) in the evenings.

This bag is handy : AG 'Protégé' Straight Leg Twill Pants by Nordstrom

Swimwear

You'll need a lightweight bag for all your sightseeing essentials. Our packaway day sack folds up into itself and fits easily in your suitcase when not in use. It's surprisingly roomy, showerproof and light to carry – even in hot weather.

Suggested Buy! : Fold Away Day Sack on Amazon

Swimwear

Dinner Jacket or Suit

For formal nights a dinner jacket is the norm – these can usually be hired on board if you don't want to pack one. Any dark suit would also be acceptable. You can eat in the buffet restaurants if you prefer not to get dressed up, but be aware you may turned away from other parts of the ship. It varies by cruise line, so do check before you go if you don't want to miss out on anything.

We love : 2 Button Eveningwear Jacket by Marks & Spencer

Swimwear

Fleece or Light Sweater

Even in hot weather the breezes can make it feel cool when sailing, whilst inside the air-con can also be chilly. A fleece is light, cosy and packs well – or opt for a smart sweater if that's more your style.

Suggested buy: : The North Face Glacier 1/4 Zip Fleece by Amazon

Swimwear

Tie & Cufflinks

If you're packing your suit and formal shirt, don't forget a tie or bow tie, cufflinks and any other accessories you wish to go with it. A regular tie is always handy to pack for other evenings too – just in case.

Suggested buy: : Chuvora 925 Sterling Silver Cuff Links on Amazon

What to wear on a cruise: Cruise attire and cruise line dress codes

Ashley Kosciolek

Have you ever had that nightmare where you're at work, in school or giving an important presentation, and you look down to discover you're wearing only your underwear (or worse, nothing at all)? If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared.

Packing acceptable attire for a cruise is simple if you remember a few general rules. Here, I'll break down some safe options if you're unsure, and I'll give an overview of the cruise dress codes for each of the "big eight" cruise lines.

What do people wear on a cruise?

men's caribbean cruise attire

You can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing for sea days when you'll remain on board your ship. Although some lines will be more or less casual than that, it's a good baseline. But what is "resort casual"?

Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeve, button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will work well also.

On most ships, this clothing will also be acceptable at night in the main dining rooms. For extra-fee restaurants, you might choose to dress up a bit more -- perhaps collared shirts or long-sleeve button-downs for men and slacks with a blouse, or a dress, for women.

For formal nights, men will want to bring a collared, button-down shirt at the bare minimum. For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. Some men opt for suits or tuxes. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns.

Jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights, and cut-off shorts, baseball caps and flip-flops are banned at all times during dinner in the main dining rooms.

Another key piece of clothing to bring is a bathing suit. Whether you're headed to a warm-weather destination and plan to laze by the pool or on the beach, or you're visiting somewhere chilly but want to take advantage of your vessel's hot tubs, it's an item you won't want to forget. Note that cover-ups are required for entry at all restaurants and dining rooms, with the exception of walk-up, poolside window-service venues.

For shore excursions — particularly those in more rugged or active destinations that require a lot of walking — comfortable, casual clothing and sturdy footwear are a must. Bring layers for cold climates and moisture-wicking fabrics for places where it's warm or where you expect to work up a sweat.

Finally, check to see if your cruise line has any special theme nights planned. If so, you might want to pack an outfit for the white party or '80s night.

Carnival cruise dress code

men's caribbean cruise attire

Carnival is one line where casual is the name of the game. Passengers will be just fine in jeans, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and bathing suits for their days on board or ashore.

At night, nice jeans and nice tops are perfect for eating in the main dining rooms.

On Carnival cruise formal nights, known as "cruise elegant" nights, cruisers wear everything from slacks with nice shirts to tuxes and ball gowns. However, most passengers stick to clothes that fall somewhere in the middle.

Voyages of six nights or longer will have two "cruise elegant" nights, while those five nights or shorter will see only one.

Celebrity Cruises dress code

Celebrity Cruises maintains a dress code that's best described as chic-casual. The demographic on board tends to be a bit more upscale than what you'll find on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. That means khaki shorts with nice button-downs are more common than jean shorts and tank tops, although you won't be out of place in the latter.

For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room. Anything from unripped jeans to dress pants with nice blouses or button-downs is acceptable.

Are there formal nights on Celebrity cruises? Yes, there's one on every sailing of six nights or fewer and two on voyages of a week or more, but they have a different name. "Evening chic" nights encourage passengers to go all out with tuxes and evening gowns. However, most men choose slacks with collared or button-down shirts and jackets, sans ties. Most women choose slacks and nice blouses, sundresses or party dresses.

Disney Cruise Line dress code

men's caribbean cruise attire

Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with children, and children like to be comfortable. With that in mind, just about anything goes in terms of dress on The Mouse's ships, which tend toward casual in spite of their stellar service and high price point.

It's not uncommon to see jeans, shorts, T-shirts or bathing suits during the day. Unlike most other lines, the same goes at dinnertime, with jeans and T-shirts just as common as dressier attire like slacks and button-downs.

Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages. For those, DCL suggests that men avoid jeans and wear jackets. Women should go with dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

Some of Disney Cruise Line's added-fee restaurants, such as Remy — one of the most expensive alternative eateries at sea — require jackets for men and don't allow jeans.

Each Disney sailing features a Pirate Night; cruisers wishing to participate should pack their best swashbuckling gear. As is standard at Disney parks, you're also likely to see large numbers of costumes and mouse ears at all hours of the day.

Holland America Line dress code

Although the dress code on Holland America Line ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed. Most passengers tend toward resort wear or, at the bare minimum, nice jeans with pressed T-shirts.

The casual dress code carries through to dinner, but HAL cruisers can often be found dressing up a bit more — collared shirts or button-downs (sometimes with jackets) and slacks for men and slacks with nice tops or dresses for women.

As for Holland America formal nights, on sailings shorter than a week, there will be one "gala night," where travelers don evening or ball gowns, suits or tuxedos. Voyages of eight to 13 nights will see two gala nights, while any cruises of two weeks or longer will have three chances to dress to the nines.

MSC Cruises dress code

men's caribbean cruise attire

What to wear on MSC cruises largely depends on the crowd with whom you're sailing. On Europe cruises, your fellow passengers are likely to dress up more often — even during the day — with skimpy resort wear and designer bathing suits gracing the pool deck as far as the eye can see. On those voyages, dinner is an even more fancy affair, with elegance as the norm. Expect to see glittering dresses and stylish pants and button-downs with dress shoes, even when it's not formal night.

On cruises that depart from the U.S., expect a more casual vibe, with jeans, T-shirts and bathing suits ruling the day. At night, you'll be fine with nice jeans and a collared shirt or a sundress, although you might want to dress up a bit more to match the ship's ambiance.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Are there formal nights on MSC cruises? Absolutely. They're called "gala dinners," and they appear at least once per voyage, but the number can vary by itinerary. The dress code is strict, with the buffet the only place that will allow T-shirts and shorts. You'll fit in best in a ball gown, cocktail dress, suit or tuxedo.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

Norwegian prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort.

The only exception is at dinner, when a smart casual vibe encourages travelers to avoid torn clothes or outfits that are suggestive or skimpy.

In a nod to Norwegian's laid-back style, NCL formal nights — dubbed "Dress Up or Not" nights — provide a chance for you to doll up. However, it's not required, and you won't be turned away from the main dining rooms if you choose not to participate. Passengers have been spotted wearing everything from jeans and T-shirts to ball gowns and tuxes, and all coexist in perfect harmony.

Princess Cruises dress code

men's caribbean cruise attire

Princess ' casual daytime mindset means you can wear the same types of clothing on board as you would during a day ashore — activewear, beachwear and jeans or T-shirts are totally fine.

Princess cruise formal nights are special because the line is one of the few industry holdouts in that it still has an official formal night. Its passengers enjoy a more traditional cruise experience, and they relish the romantic vibe that a formal night can provide. With that in mind, the line doesn't mention super-fancy garb like ball gowns or tuxes; instead, it advises suits or slacks with jackets for men and cocktail dresses or pantsuits for the ladies.

On voyages of less than a week, passengers should plan for one formal night, while sailings of a week to 13 days will have two, and cruises two weeks or longer will have three.

All other nights are listed as "smart casual," which means sundresses or pants with flowy tops for women and nice jeans or slacks with collared shirts for men will suffice.

Royal Caribbean dress code

As is the case with Carnival and Norwegian, Royal Caribbean is a casual line during the day. And, like Disney Cruise Line, it caters to a lot of families. Translation: Wear what allows you to have the most fun in the most comfort. Expect to see shorts or jeans with T-shirts or tank tops and bathing suits or beachwear almost exclusively during the daytime.

At night, you might want to put on something a little less comfortable, but it's certainly not required, unless it's a formal night. (Like Princess, Royal still has those.) What is confusing is that the line has three different dress codes, all of which are loosely enforced: casual, smart casual and formal. The ones that show up on your voyage will depend on the length of the cruise.

The only difference between the first two is that smart casual recommends pantsuits for ladies and jackets for the guys, but skirts or trousers with blouses or collared shirts are fine in both cases. Smart casual also strongly discourages jeans -- even nice ones.

Royal Caribbean formal nights have the highest expectations for passengers, urging them to put on their finest cocktail dresses, evening gowns, suits or tuxes. As with the line's smart casual dress code, jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights.

What to Wear on a Cruise: Daytime, Formal Nights & More

W hen it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential. Including a few key versatile items on your cruise packing list will prevent your suitcase (and the limited closet space in your stateroom) from becoming overcrowded – and keep you looking appropriate for all events.

Although most cruise lines outline their suggested dress codes in the FAQ sections of their websites, be sure to also review the specifics of your cruise itinerary. Not only will the destination and weather factor into what you should wear on your cruise, but you'll also want to know if formal nights require black-tie attire, themed dress parties need costumes or shore excursions necessitate unique clothing or footwear.

Whether you'll be lounging by the pool or attending a glamorous dinner, our list of must-have items and suggestions from industry experts will help you navigate dressing for your next cruise vacation.

For relaxing sea days, prioritize comfort above all else. Depending on your planned activities, any of the following casual options are considered acceptable attire:

  • Skirts or skorts
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Breezy lounge pants
  • Bathing suits
  • Cover-ups
  • Sun hats or baseball caps

Travel writer Jill Schildhouse always packs her VOTEPRETTY sundress . "This is my go-to cruise workhorse," says Schildhouse. "It's light and breezy, and the pockets come in very handy." She adds that the sundress can be worn to casual dinners on the ship or on shore excursions, and it can even double as a swimsuit cover-up. "I've taken it all over the world and it always arrives wrinkle-free," she says. Schildhouse has received many compliments on this classic sundress, which is available in multiple colors.

Sheri Griffiths, host of YouTube series CruiseTipsTV , suggests wearing comfortable, broken-in shoes on a cruise. She recommends avoiding brand-new footwear during your voyage to prevent blisters and daily discomfort. A basic sneaker can be worn for just about any cruise itinerary, from Alaska to the Caribbean . Griffiths says, "We love these Adidas Stan Smiths because they wear in quickly and have a timeless style."

In the evening, most cruise ships adopt a dress code in their main dining rooms and specialty restaurants that incorporate smart-casual or resort-wear attire. The following clothing choices will suffice:

  • Maxi dresses
  • Elegant tops
  • Long- or short-sleeved button-down shirts
  • Polo shirts
  • Blazers and ties (typically optional, unless otherwise stated)
  • Shawls or wraps
  • Closed-toe dress shoes
  • Sandals or heels

Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, shares her best advice for cruise footwear. "I always pack my Rothy's shoes for any cruise because they're infinitely comfortable, work as both a formal and [an] informal shoe and can be tossed in the laundry if they get dirty." She notes that she has several pairs, but two of her go-to styles are The Point and The Ballet Flat . McDaniel adds that the shoes work in every occasion, from strolling along the ship decks to perusing cobblestone streets on shore. "I bought both [pairs] 5 years ago, and they look as new today as they did out of the box despite literally hundreds of hours of wear," she says.

Jason Leppert, founder of YouTube channel Popular Cruising , always packs his signature Hawaiian shirts to wear day or night. He says, "I love the RSVLTS collection because they can play casually with shorts or more dressy with slacks for dinner."

Formal Nights

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

  • Cocktail dresses
  • Evening gowns
  • Dress shoes

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." Still, Kosciolek is a firm believer that travelers should wear what is most comfortable for them while on vacation. She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

Mikkel Woodruff, editor of cruise site Sometimes Sailing , always brings her Omega Sailing Bracelet on cruises. She says, "I like to bring jewelry that reminds me of the ocean and being on the sea." Woodruff appreciates the bracelet's versatility, noting how easily it can go from shore excursions to formal evenings to everyday activities.

Shore Excursions

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Mesh water shoes
  • T-shirts or tank tops
  • A waterproof jacket

Freelance travel writer David Swanson shares his favorite versatile cruise shoes. He discovered a comfortable pair of Danner multitasking shoes that worked for dinners, casual events and multiple days of cycling on a recent European cruise. "I didn't think I'd find something to do dual duty, but I love this comfy pair from Danner, an outdoor brand [that is] new to me but has been around since 1932," says Swanson.

Paul Thornton, host of The Joy of Cruising Podcast , always packs his Coofandy linen shirts and shorts for hot Caribbean days and breezy cruise ship evenings. "I love Coofandy because they enable this senior to look 'youthful' on the beach and excursions," says Thornton. He adds that the brand is also his go-to retailer for White Party-themed nights on board.

Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

  • Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
  • Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
  • Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Evening: After 5:30 p.m., attire ranges from "cruise casual" to "cruise elegant."

  • "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
  • "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) Bathing suits with cover-ups, T-shirts, tank tops, hats and sunglasses are only appropriate poolside. Cruisers should avoid wearing these items in the dining areas.
  • Evening: Most evenings, guests are expected to wear comfortable yet tasteful attire. This entails dresses, skirts, long pants or jeans, stylish tops and button-down shirts. Shorts and flip-flops do not meet the evening dress code. Depending on your voyage, there will be one or two formal nights that require "evening chic" wear. Passengers can dress to impress in formal gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dressy jeans or blazers.

Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code.
  • Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: On Disney Cruise Line sailings, cruise casual attire is acceptable during the day; outfit options include sundresses and shorts and tees. Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in dining venues.
  • Evening: After the sun sets, polished attire like collared shirts and jeans without rips are acceptable. Bathing suits, tees, tank tops and sports attire are not allowed. Adult-exclusive dining venues on Disney ships call for elegance; formal or semiformal wear is recommended.
  • Themed Nights: On three- and four-night sailings, there is typically a pirate-themed deck party and one optional dress-up night for guests of all ages. Sailings lasting seven nights or longer add one formal and one semiformal night, when women may wear a formal dress or pantsuit and men can opt for a suit or dress pants with a jacket.

Holland America Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Plan on wearing casual attire aboard Holland America Line 's ships during the day. When indoors, guests must wear shirts, cover-ups and footwear.

  • Evening: In Norwegian's upscale specialty restaurants, smart casual attire is the norm. Women can wear slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops, while men should opt for jeans or slacks, a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Children ages 12 and younger may wear shorts in all restaurants. On each cruise, there is one particular "Dress-Up or Not Night," when guests can wear fancier clothing (if they choose).

What should I wear at sea? Here's what to know about cruise line dress codes

men's caribbean cruise attire

When I was getting ready to take a cruise in October, there were a handful of items I made sure to pack: my passport, anti-nausea medicine, and a blazer and tie.

The cruise line, Holland America Line, had advised me that during the transatlantic voyage from the Netherlands to New York there would be some occasions to dress up. But after lint-rolling my jacket and multiple attempts at a half-Windsor knot, I left my stateroom and realized I may not have needed them.

While plenty of guests were decked out in jackets, dresses and slacks, others were in sartorial vacation mode, dressed in varying degrees of (in)formality.

Can travelers still find cruise deals?  Yes ... for now

Happiest place in the Caribbean?  Disney Cruise Line to open Lighthouse Point island destination

First-time cruisers may not realize that ships have some guidelines for clothing, from formal nights to events that call for unique attire, but those rules and recommendations have evolved over time.

"It really has gotten more and more relaxed as we've gone along, especially after the pandemic," said Valerie Dorsey, a franchise owner and travel adviser at Cruise Planners.

Here's what travelers should know about what to pack and wear on their next sailing.

Do cruise lines have dress codes?

Though travelers may associate cruising with formal nights – when lines encourage passengers to dress up for dinner in certain venues, stemming from grand tradition – the onboard experience has grown more easygoing, Dorsey said.

Dorsey said she noticed a shift from true formal wear to "smart casual" or "smart elegant" clothing around 2015 and began hearing more from clients about how other travelers weren't dressing up as much, a change that has irked some guests .

Passengers have gotten more casual on regular nights, too.

That shift has only been exacerbated in the wake of COVID-19 as more travelers work from home, according to Dorsey, though some lines take formal nights more seriously and some passengers choose to go all out, regardless.

"I've seen people dress way up, meaning tuxedos, evening gowns, beautiful clothing, down to 'I'm just going to dinner at Red Lobster tonight,' " she said. "I think it's all over the place."

Enforcement of the dress codes has eased, as well.

Story continues below.

"It used to be if you walked in in a pair of shorts, they would say, 'I'm sorry, you can't enter the dining room,' and they don't even stop people anymore," Dorsey said. "So that's why it's really hard to get a handle on how you're supposed to dress."

If you want to opt out of dressing up altogether, there are parts of the ship that usually remain more casual, even on dressy or formal nights. Travelers can always head to the buffet or other casual eateries, Dorsey said, though on smaller lines more passengers may be dressed up more across the board.

Cruise lines each have their own dress codes, but we've rounded up some of the major lines' policies:

Carnival Cruise Line dress code

Passengers can wear casual clothes during the day, but the line requires smart casual clothing after 5:30 p.m. in its public lounges and restaurants or as stated in the ship's newsletter, spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an email.

The line's Cruise Casual dress code calls for collared sport shirts, casual pants or jeans – but no cut-offs – and long dress shorts for men. Women can wear items including casual dresses, blouses and skirts or pants, dress shorts and jeans.

In accordance with the dress code, passengers cannot wear regular shorts or gym shorts, bathing suit attire, beach flip-flops and other similar items in the dining room.

When the Cruise Elegant Dress Code is in effect, men can wear dress trousers and shirts, and the line recommends a sport jacket.

For women, the line calls for cocktail dresses, "elegant skirts and blouses," pantsuits or even evening gowns. Items like T-shirts, jeans, shorts and gym shorts and bathing suit attire are similarly barred from the dining room.

The length of the cruise determines the number of Cruise Elegant evenings, according to Carnival's website . The Cruise Elegant dress code applies for the main dining rooms and the Steakhouse. However, Lupoli said passengers dressed in Cruise Casual will not be turned away from those venues on Cruise Elegant nights.

Royal Caribbean International dress code

Royal Caribbean breaks its suggested attire into several categories. Casual includes polos, jeans and sundresses, but the line asks that guests wear swimwear only on the pool deck and shorts at breakfast and lunch, according to its website .

The line defines smart casual "as a step up from your typical dinner wear," including collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses. Passengers are also welcome to wear items like jackets and blazers.

For formal attire, the line said on its website, "make it a night out in your best black-tie look - suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns." The line may have one to four formal nights on a given cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

"When it comes to what to wear, you can go resort casual or get decked out and look your best – it's your call," Norwegian said on its website .

Cruise casual clothing – including jeans and shorts for men and jeans, casual dresses and shorts for women – is acceptable at the buffet and most specialty restaurants anytime during the day. Guests can wear swimwear at the buffet and outdoor restaurant as long as they have a shirt or cover-up and footwear.

Passengers cannot wear certain items such as tank tops for men, baseball caps and overly faded jeans, those that have holes in them or those worn below the hips in the main dining rooms or specialty restaurants, the line said on its website.

In Norwegian's "more formal dining room or in our more upscale specialty restaurants," the line calls for smart casual clothing, which includes slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops for women, and collared shirts, jeans and slacks for men.

Holland America guests can dress casually during the day, though they must always wear shirts or cover-ups and footwear inside, a spokesperson for the line said in an email.

The nighttime dress code has two categories. Smart casual includes a sport shirt or sweater and slacks for men, and a sweater or blouse and a skirt or pants for women. "Shorts, pool and beachwear, distressed jeans and tank tops are not permitted in table service restaurants," the spokesperson said.

On dressy nights, the line recommends blouses, skirts, slacks, dresses, collared shirts and jackets. There will be two dressy nights on most seven-night cruises, with additional dressy nights for longer sailings. Guests can reference the ship's daily program for the evening's suggested attire.

On the line's Grand Voyages, the line recommends suits or dresses when formal attire is suggested. "Grand Voyages are 60-plus-day voyages, and this is the only time guests would be in 'formal' attire," the spokesperson said.

Cunard Line dress code

Cunard passengers can dress as they like during the day. "Then as the sun goes down, the style goes up," Cunard said in dress code guidelines provided by a spokesperson.

At night, the line asks guests to wear smart attire in the majority of its restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. That includes "smart trousers" with a collared shirt – and optional jacket and tie – for men, and blouses and skirts or "stylish trousers and dresses" for women.

The line also has at least two Gala evenings over seven days of a sailing, when passengers are invited to dress up more.

"After 6:00pm on Gala evenings, it's dinner jacket, tuxedo, or dark suit for the men with a regular tie or bow tie," the line said. "Evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit, or formal separates for the ladies please."

How should passengers pack for cruise line dress codes?

Dorsey recommended women bring a "nice long skirt" and a blouse or a dress. "You know, you might wear slacks every other night, but if they come upon a more formal night, then you can kind of dress something like that up," she said.

For men, she suggested packing collared shirts and nice pants – even chinos are formal enough. "And maybe throw one jacket in there and then you're prepared"

Cruise lines may also have special events that call for unique attire, such as an all-white ensemble  at Norwegian's White Hot Party.

Even if formal nights aren't as formal as they used to be, they still provide an excuse to get dressed up: cruise lines will have photographers out on those nights to take portraits of guests, Dorsey said.
