Offers a competitive earn rate and up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points, but you'll need to wait a year for 30,000 of them.

To get 90,000 of these bonus points, you’ll need to spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first 60 days of account opening. You then need to keep the account open for over 12 months (paying the second year’s annual fee) in order to get the other 30,000 bonus Qantas Points.

  • Up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points
  • Discounted $295 annual fee for the first year
  • Complimentary insurance covers
  • Spend requirement to get bonus points is tricky
  • High ongoing annual fee of $395
  • No lounge passes or travel credit

The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature is suited to travellers who want to earn Qantas Points as they spend and who will use the card's extra features (like the complimentary insurance covers) to justify the annual fee.

nab signature qantas travel insurance

Congratulations, NAB!

NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card received the highly commended award for 'Frequent Flyer Credit Card – Qantas' in the 2024 Product Awards.

Eligibility criteria

  • New cardholder. To be eligible for the bonus points, you must be a new customer, meaning you cannot hold or have held a NAB Qantas rewards card in the previous 12 months.
  • Residency. You can apply if you're an Australian citizen or permanent resident. If you are not a citizen or permanent resident, you will need to have an acceptable visa. Many visas are acceptable but the following are not: Visitor Visa (exception, a Special Category Visa - NZ Citizen is acceptable), Working Holiday, Student, Exchange/gap year, Transit/short stay/seasonal, and Bridging.
  • Income. NAB does not explicitly state a required minimum income, but it will be factored into your application along with the rest of your financial information. You may call the customer service team to discuss your specific personal circumstances.
  • Age. You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Eligible balance transfer. If you request the balance transfer at the time of application, you can transfer up to 90% of your available credit limit from Australian-issued, non-NAB cards.

Required documents

  • Finances. You must provide copies of recent payslips or bank statements.
  • Employment. You'll need to provide details of your employment including employer's name, workplace address and time in employment.
  • Personal details. You'll need to prove your residential address, which you can usually do by providing copies of utility bills to that address.
  • Frequent flyer number. To earn Qantas Points, you’ll need to provide your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership number to NAB.
  • Balance transfer details. If you are planning to transfer a balance, you’ll need to provide the details of the account(s), including the institution and account number.
  • Up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points. You can give your points balance a boost of 90,000 bonus Qantas Points when you apply, get approved and spend $3,000 on everyday purchases within 60 days of opening the account. These points will be credited to your account within 3 months of meeting the spend requirement. The other 30,000 bonus points will be credited in the 13th month when you’ve kept your account open.
  • Reduced first-year annual fee. Save $100 with a reduced $295 annual fee for the first year, reverting to $395 p.a. thereafter.
  • Qantas Points as you spend. Earn 1 Qantas Point per eligible $1 spent up to $5,000 and then 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent between $5,001 and $20,000 per statement period. Therefore, total points are capped at 12,500 per statement period.
  • Complimentary insurance. The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature offers purchase protection insurance, extended warranty insurance, car rental excess in Australia insurance, domestic travel insurance and international travel insurance. These complimentary insurance policies are issued by Allianz and you should refer to the NAB Card Insurance Policy Information Booklet for full details of what’s covered and when you’ll be eligible for cover.
  • Complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership. If you're not already a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program, you can join for free. This saves you the $99.50 joining fee (as at 29 June 2021).
  • Concierge service. Provided by Visa Worldwide, cardholders will also enjoy their own personal assistance for travel and lifestyle services with the NAB 24/7 Concierge.
  • Balance transfer rate. This card has a 0% p.a. interest rate for 12 months on balance transfers with a 3% balance transfer fee, which reverts to the variable cash advance rate, currently 21.74% p.a.
  • Mobile wallets. You can link your NAB credit card with Samsung Pay , Apple Pay , Google Pay , Fitbit Pay, or Garmin Pay to make contactless payments using your qualifying device at the checkout.

Rates & fees

  • Annual fee. Outside of any promotions, this card charges a standard annual fee of $395 p.a.
  • Purchase rate. Purchases will collect a variable interest rate of 20.99% p.a.
  • Cash advance rate. If you use the card for cash advances, a 21.74% p.a. variable interest rate will apply. You’ll also be charged a cash advance fee of 3% or $3, whichever is greater.
  • Interest-free days. Receive up to 44 interest-free days on purchases when you pay your balance in full, or if your statement shows an interest free days amount, in full, by the statement due date.
  • Additional cardholder. To earn Qantas Points faster, you can add 1 additional cardholder to your account for $0.

What and where do I need to buy to be an eligible purchase?

Avatar

Sarah Megginson Finder

May 17, 2024

Hi Dart, Eligible purchases include all kinds of everyday spending: groceries, shopping, travel, flights, accomodation, coffee shops etc. Ineligible purchases usually mean things like gambling, cash advances, interest charges, fees and refunds. Hope this helps!

April 25, 2024

If we put the card into credit of 9600.00 and paid for our holiday would we qualify for the first 90000 points

May 02, 2024

hi Jennifer,

Yes, as long as you spend on eligible purchases, you would qualify for the bonus points.

March 05, 2024

Hi there, If we get 15k approved card limit. Then, we use a balance transfer option of lets say $10k and also spend $3000 from card within first 60 days. Do we still get the Qantas points?

March 06, 2024

Provided you meet the minimum spend requirement, you’ll get the bonus points.

January 16, 2024

If I was to take out this card and have a additional card holder, do both the cards spending go towards the one account?

Avatar

Amy Bradney-George Finder

January 17, 2024

Hi Rob, Yes, you would just need to provide your Qantas Frequent Flyer account details on or after applying for the card. Then both the primary card and any additional cards would earn points for that Qantas Frequent Flyer account. I hope this helps.

January 15, 2024

I have a NAB. Visa debit card, this will not be classified as a NAB Qantas rewards card will it?

February 14, 2024

No this wouldn’t be considered a NAB visa card and therefore you would still be eligible to apply and collect any bonus offers.

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. Nab debit cards for travelling, nab credit cards for travelling, should i use a bank card or travel card while abroad, bottom line, frequently asked questions (faqs).

In 2012, NAB released a Traveller Card with the intention to make it easier for jet-setters to access their cash while abroad.

However, since November 2020, the bank closed the card to new customers. These days, NAB customers travelling overseas can opt for one of NAB’s other cards that can be used internationally, or use a rival bank or money transfer service.

This guide outlines the pros and cons of the Traveller Card for those existing customers whose cards may not have reached their expiration date yet, as well as the other NAB cards that can be used overseas. We break down international fees; conversion rates; included insurance; and other features.

All fees, interest rates and benefits are accurate at the time of writing and are subject to change.

The debit cards offered by NAB that can be used for travelling—as in, used overseas—include the discontinued NAB Traveller Card, the NAB Visa Debit Card, and the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card.

The details of each card, primarily in relation to international use, are outlined below.

Note that as these are debit cards, there is no interest rate to take into consideration. The NAB credit cards for travelling, which we explore later, will outline the various interest rates among different credit cards.

There are eight credit cards on offer from NAB, all of which can be used abroad. For ease of reference, we have split the comparisons of these cards into standard credit cards and rewards credit cards.

Let’s start with the standard credit cards —the NAB Low Fee Card, NAB Low Fee Platinum Card, NAB Low Rate Card and the NAB StraightUp Card .

As these are credit cards, there is the interest rate to consider on purchases, whether at home or abroad. This is unless it is an interest-free card.

Now, let’s look at the rewards cards , including the frequent flyer credit cards that allow you to earn travel perks, such as bonus points to redeem on flights or upgrades, lounge access, complimentary travel insurance and more.

It’s worth noting that on June 12, NAB made some significant changes to its NAB Rewards Signature card, including ditching the annual fee for a $24 per month payment (which works out slightly cheaper); a waiver on the monthly fee when more than $5,000 is spent each month; the scrapping of international transaction fees, which were formerly 3%; and the addition of mobile phone insurance. Reward earn rates have also changed, with uncapped potential added, and complimentary lounge passes will be available to passengers whose flights are delayed. For full details of the change, visit Nab’s dedicated Signature Rewards page .

NAB economics data shows a third of Australians say they’re saving and planning for a holiday this year.

“Our customers and bankers have told us one of the key pain points for travel cards is around international transaction fees,” said Tim Peters, NAB executive of Personal Lending Experience.

For information on what you could buy with bonus points, read our guide on what Qantas points are worth, including how many points you would need to redeem domestic and international flights.

There are many cards on the market that can be used when travelling, with some companies offering cards designed for this purpose alone. Wise and Revolut , for example, offer debit cards that allow Australian cardholders to store numerous currencies on the single card, create local bank account details in multiple countries, and save on foreign transaction fees and/or currency conversion fees.

As stated, NAB discontinued its travel-specific card that allowed its customers to hold multiple currencies. However, its Big Four competitors still have their own versions available: the Westpac Travel Money Card allows for 11 currencies, while the Commonwealth Bank Travel Money Card can hold 13.

Like NAB, ANZ discontinued its version of a travel card in recent years as well.

While it’s unfortunate that NAB no longer offers its travel-specific card with multiple currencies, NAB still has options for Australians when travelling.

If you are after a NAB card to use abroad, you will need to consider whether you want a debit or credit card, whether you’re willing to pay an annual or monthly fee, any additional perks you are after, and the foreign transaction fees you’ll be charged while travelling—although NAB has scrapped foreign transaction fees on its Signature Credit Card as of June 2024.

Does NAB have travel cards?

NAB used to have a travel-specific card, allowing Australians to travel internationally and spend money in one account with various currencies while abroad. This card was discontinued in recent years, with NAB not publicly explaining why this occurred.

Now, NAB customers wanting to use their NAB cards while overseas will have to consider the foreign transaction fees as well as any ATM withdrawal fees. If they’re using a credit card, they will also need to consider the interest rate on purchases if they don’t pay their card off in full each month.

Luckily, all NAB cards can be used abroad.

Is NAB’s travel insurance good?

Some of NAB’s card offerings include complimentary domestic and international travel insurance when you book your trip with your card. Often this complimentary insurance offered by credit card companies is more of a ‘bare bones’ policy, rather than a comprehensive travel insurance policy .

With NAB, the complimentary international travel insurance can be claimed if you:

  • charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to the account holder’s card account before leaving Australia
  • have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia
  • be aged under 81 years at the time you become eligible for the cover by meeting the conditions above.

On NAB’s website, it states that the “the below information is a limited summary only and is subject to applicable terms, conditions, exclusions, limits, sub-limits and excesses that may apply”. In summary, it says it may cover:

  • Overseas emergency assistance and medical expenses;
  • Accidental death and loss of income;
  • Cancellation;
  • Travel delay and alternative transport expenses;
  • Luggage and luggage delay;
  • Rental vehicle excess; and
  • Personal liability.

It’s important to read the terms and conditions of your individual card and its travel insurance conditions before you rely on it for your insurance needs while abroad.

What are the international transaction fees on NAB cards?

International transaction fees charged on NAB cards vary from card to card, but are usually around 3% to 4% of the transaction. There are additional charges for cash withdrawals overseas, as well as a transaction fee, and usually a withdrawal fee from the ATM operator. As of June 12, 2024, NAB has scrapped these international fees on its Rewards Signature card.

Convenience

Customer service, rates and fees.

When a premium card is just not enough to complement your successful, adventurous lifestyle, there's a new level of prestige card just for you: the Signature card. And for committed Qantas Frequent Flyers (or even those new to the scheme), there's a very special card, the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card.

It has almost everything you could look for in a frequent traveller's card, including a truly valuable first-purchase bonus points boost, lots of ongoing QFF points, and one of the most comprehensive suites of complimentary insurance policies available with a credit card.

120,000 Qantas points bonus, just for normal spending

No one is going to pay for a premium card like this, and then leave it in their wallet. At this level, cardholders can usually spend $1,500 per month on card purchases without batting an eyelid. Do just that, by spending $3,000 in the first 60 days, and be richly rewarded with 90,000 bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Then, after 12 months, just pay your second-year annual fee and you'll receive a further 30,000 bonus QFF points. Those 120,000 Qantas Points are nearly enough for a return economy flight to London or New York (110,400 points).

Best QFF ongoing points rate on a Visa card

This is a stand-alone Visa card, like all NAB credit cards now that they have dropped their Amex companion cards. It earns 1.0 Qantas Frequent Flyer point for every dollar spent on eligible purchases, and that's equal to the best rate going on any Visa card or Mastercard available in Australia at the time of writing.

You'll also benefit from an extra 1.0 points per dollar if you use your card to purchase Qantas flights, Qantas Club memberships, or travel from the Qantas Travel service. So that's a massive two points per dollar for all spending directly with Qantas on Qantas products.

Fairly generous points threshold and cap

Also unlike the NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card, there is a very liberal points cap. The Premium Card is capped at $6,000 per month, but this Signature Card lets you earn 0.5 Qantas points on monthly purchases between $5,000 and $20,000. The $20,000 cap is unlikely to worry you, but the $5,000 threshold, while potentially annoying, means that you still earn at least some points on major purchases or in big-spending Christmas and holiday periods.

Get Qantas Frequent Flyer membership for free

NAB will pay the $99.50 Qantas Frequent Flyer program joining fee for any new cardholder who is not yet a member.

Using your Qantas Frequent Flyer points

Accepted wisdom says that the best way to use your Qantas points is for award flights or seat upgrades with Qantas and its more than 50 partner airlines worldwide, and accepted wisdom is not wrong. The longer the flight and the higher the seat class, the greater your return is per dollar spent in earning points.

However, you may occasionally wish to redeem your Qantas points in other ways, and you can choose from:

  • An online merchandise catalogue
  • Retail, travel, car hire and entertainment gift cards and vouchers
  • Wines and spirits
  • Qantas Epicure wine and food events

But be aware that non-flight redemptions almost always deliver a much lower value per point than flights and seat upgrades.

Complimentary insurance policies to safeguard your lifestyle

Prestige cards usually get a good workout for both travelling and shopping, so NAB have included a wide-ranging collection of insurance policies (seven in total) to make sure that your purchases are protected as far as possible from unexpected problems and unforeseen extra costs:

  • Overseas travel insurance: covers emergency medical expenses, luggage and documents, unavoidable trip cancellation, rental vehicle insurance excess, and more
  • Interstate flight insurance: similar to overseas travel cover, but without emergency medical expenses
  • Domestic hotel burglary insurance: covers personal items stolen from a locked hotel room in Australia (a policy unique to NAB credit cards)
  • Transport accident insurance: compensation for loss of life or serious injury as a result of an accident in a plane, bus, taxi, train or ferry
  • Extended warranty insurance: doubles the manufacturer's warranty up to a maximum of 12 extra months
  • Purchase protection insurance: purchased items covered for three months against loss, theft or accidental damage

In all cases, insurance is activated by purchasing with the card the goods and services for which cover is required. For the overseas travel insurance policy, $500 of pre-booked travel expenses must have been charged to the card, and for the remaining travel policies the card must have been used to pay the full fare.

Transfer your balance and enjoy a 0% interest rate for 12 months

If you already have a competing credit card, chances are you may have recently made a major purchase which has created a blip in your cash flow. This is your opportunity to bring your balance across to your new NAB card and pay no interest on it for 12 months while making monthly repayments of only 2% of the balance. There is a 3% upfront balance transfer fee to pay, which will slightly reduce your interest cost savings.

The only problem with having an unpaid balance transfer is that during this time you will sacrifice the normal interest-free days granted each month on purchases, in this case, up to 44 days per month. So you'll want to avoid using your card for purchases for the first 12 months if you have a balance transfer. This means that you'll miss out on earning points and being covered by insurance.

Plan to pay off the balance in full at the end of 12 months in order to avoid the 21.74% p.a. balance transfer revert interest rate. This is also the cash advance rate, and the rate on unpaid purchase balances is 20.99% p.a.

All the premium level service and security you've come to expect

The Signature-level card features, designed for busy people like you, include:

  • NAB Concierge Service: a dedicated 24/7 global travel and lifestyle service for NAB Signature, Platinum and Premium cardholders only.
  • Visa Premium Access: jump the queue to get reserved seating for the hottest events, plus other privileges and discounts.
  • NAB Pay for Android: convert your smartphone into a digital wallet, tap and pay with your phone (secure fingerprint ID), block, unblock and control your card account features, use your account before your card arrives in the mail.
  • NAB Defence: proactive fraud detection, always on the lookout for suspicious transactions.
  • Verified by Visa: an extra level of security for online shopping, using a password or One Time PIN delivered by SMS.
  • Worldwide emergency assistance: help available around the clock if your card is lost or stolen.

A premium price, but get back more than you pay for

You'll pay a reduced annual fee of $295 in your first year of holding the card (with no extra charge for supplementary cards), rising to $395 in subsequent years.

This hefty amount will probably not come as too much of a surprise, given the high points earning rate and the many other benefits. The bonus points cover the fee several times over in the first year. But no one likes paying more than they need to, so consider what you get for the fee every year:

  • High points earning potential: If you put $5,000 per month through the card, you'll earn 60,000 Qantas points, more than enough for a one-way economy fare to Europe or the US.
  • Complimentary insurance package worth an estimated $1,370 per year.

Other cards to consider

$395 per year is a big commitment, so take a look at some competing cards before making your final decision. You'll find all the major Qantas Frequent Flyer points earning cards listed on our Qantas credit card comparison .

The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card will handsomely compensate you for the travel you need to do for both work and leisure, while at the same time making your life a little easier. So whether you've already arrived at the top of your field, or you merely have it in your sights, this card could be an ideal choice.

Review of NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card

Reviewed by seanrewell

Keep dragging the claim out so they'll eventually give up. I have spent more than $1m on this card travelling the world over recent years. On many occasions, there have been situations that would have warranted a claim but I chose to let it pass. I make a legitimate claim for less than $5k and I am run around for 5 months with the most ghastly anti-consumer tactics, the latest response from a team leader stating: "Please accept our apologies for the delay in responding to you. Due to the unprecedented high volumes received, we are experiencing delays."

Sorry that sounds like a you problem to me. NAB might want to rethink Allianz as I will my choice of card. SR
