On our trip, we met a few other Americans. Told them about Nordic Visitor and they were impressed. I found Nordic Visitor's website very user-friendly. I love that all the documents sent was super easy to just hand the concierge and the 2 excursions we booked already had our names down. I loved the 2 excursions in the package we chose. Overall, it exceeded my expectations and I'm so glad I chose this particular trip.

1. Which destinations can I explore with Nordic Visitor?

Nordic Visitor can plan your trip to the following countries in Europe:

  • •  Iceland
  • •  Scotland
  • •  Ireland
  • • The UK
  • •  Norway
  • • Switzerland
  • •  Sweden
  • •  Finland
  • •  Denmark
  • •  Greenland

We also offer Northern Europe packages in the following destinations:

  • •  Scandinavia – a group of countries, comprising Norway, Sweden and Denmark
  • • The Alps – visit Austria, Germany and Switzerland on an Alpine getaway
  • •  Lapland – a region spanning the northern reaches of Sweden and Finland
  • •  Svalbard – a remote Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic Circle

2. What is the difference between Scandinavia and the Nordics?

The term "Scandinavia" commonly refers to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. " Nordic countries " is used definitively for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. This also includes their associated territories of: Svalbard, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Åland Islands.

You may have guessed from our name that we originated as a Nordic travel agency. We now also specialise in Scotland and Ireland, two Celtic countries that are close to the Nordics.

3. Which Nordic country should I visit?

All of the Nordic countries are worth visiting at least once in your lifetime! Essentially, where to go in the Nordics depends on the sort of sights and experiences you’re looking for on your next getaway.

If it’s volcanoes and glaciers you seek, opt for a trip to Iceland. This island country will mesmerise you with its geysers, ice caves, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and so much more.

In Norway, the country with the longest coastline in Europe, you can expect a land of majestic mountains and fjords. Meanwhile, Denmark flaunts one of the world’s coolest capitals, Copenhagen, awash with cobblestone streets and first-class restaurants.

As for Sweden, you could soak up trendy cities, picturesque countryside and sandy beaches in the south of the country. Or head north during the winter months to experience the snow-laden scenery of Lapland, a region that Sweden shares with Finland.

For a Nordic aurora borealis tour , the top places to go are Iceland, Northern Norway, Lapland, and Svalbard. They are all located within or very close to the Arctic Circle, near the North Pole, where northern lights activity occurs. Here you have the best chances of witnessing this natural phenomenon in the Nordics.

Read this guide to the Nordic countries to help you choose where to visit.

4. How do you travel between Nordic countries?

As the Nordics are neighbouring countries, situated in Northern Europe, you can travel easily between them.

The Scandinavian nations, in particular, are very well connected with rail, road, sea and air links. You could drive, fly or take the train between Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and travel by ferry between the latter two countries. There’s also a Baltic cruise connection between Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Iceland, on the other hand, is located further away from the other Nordic nations. So if you want to explore Scandinavia and Iceland on a Nordic combination trip , the most convenient way to travel between them is by flying. The flight time from Bergen, Norway to Reykjavík, Iceland is 2 hours 15 minutes.

5. What is the best month to visit the Nordics?

The best month to explore the Nordics varies based on what you want to see and do. As these countries are located in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is from April to September, and winter is between October and March. Each season has its own appeal and reasons to visit.

For mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and green scenery, opt for a summer tour in the Nordics . This time of year is best for enjoying the outdoors and activities like hiking. Plus, if you travel to the northernmost parts of the Nordics, you’ll witness the midnight sun phenomenon.

The months of June, July and August are the most popular, as it’s when you get the best weather and summer holidays. April, May and September make up the “shoulder season”, and it’s an ideal time to travel in the Nordics if you’d prefer to be around fewer visitors.

A winter Nordic tour , on the other hand, offers different kinds of experiences. Think landscapes draped in frost, activities in the snow, and festive vibes. What’s more, as the night skies are darker for longer in winter, you have better chances of seeing the northern lights.

6. Who are Nordic Visitor’s travel experts?

Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Northern Europe, with offices in the capital cities of Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. Our travel experts are based in these countries and have extensively explored the regions they specialise in.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.

Read our Book With Confidence terms to find out how you can have peace of mind with risk-free, flexible booking.

If you do not have Cancellation Protection with us, normal booking terms apply and we recommend you check with your private travel insurance provider.

9. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?

At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you, based on your needs and requests.

When you arrange your trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book all parts of your tour separately. If you need to make changes to your itinerary, you have to do all the legwork yourself.

Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf, based on your needs and requests, so you can relax and look forward to your trip.

Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.

This means you can leave all the hassle of trip-planning to the experts, who are based in Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. They know our destinations inside out, so you can rely on them to incorporate the best sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

What’s more, you get access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Should you need any support, we are only a call away. And if you need to make changes to your itinerary for any reason, you can leave all of that to us as well.

10. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?

We understand the importance of having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring. To ensure you get the best experience, we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation for you.

The hotels and guesthouses we feature in our tours are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.

As we have regional offices across the destinations we specialise in, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.

11. Will Nordic Visitor customise my tour?

Yes, you can easily customise your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to make your itinerary more bespoke, don’t hesitate to speak to your dedicated travel consultant.

They will gladly tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests in mind, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or history. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.

If you’re travelling to Europe with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Europe , they’ll happily add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.

Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.

12. Can I choose the arrival date?

You can choose from a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season you are interested in. All of our tours are available to purchase online, so pick the best date for you from the availability calendar.

If your travel plans have changed and you want to amend your arrival date, contact your travel consultant to rearrange your booking.

13. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights?

Return flights to your destination are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.

14. When should I book my flight tickets?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Nordic Visitor packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you. So once you have all of the arrangements confirmed, you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

15. What should I pack for my trip?

During your time in Northern Europe, you’ll be discovering new cities, towns and countryside. And with time spent outdoors, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Here’s our recommended packing list for visiting Northern Europe:

  • • Walking boots or shoes with good grip

Tour more than met our expectations. Our tour guide, Stefano, was good and very helpful when I sustained an injury.
Very well organized, great communication through the site, Stefano was very helpful and informative. Accommodations were excellent - better then expected. The two dinners included in Flam were fabulous. European breakfasts are always amazing but the Flam one was out of control wonderful. This tour is pretty independent meaning you do not hang out with the group much. It includes transportation, hotel accommodations, breakfasts and guidance. You purchase the smaller tours separately.

Active and rewarding trip.
The fjord trek/hiking was one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had! The hikes were epic, a bit challenging but that made them even more rewarding. Our CEO Vadim, was a total pro and expert in explaining all the daily events and made sure we were all taken care of. A real bond formed with our group which made the experience even more memorable. Thanks again! Leo

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.
This was a bit challenging for me The guide Shane was wonderful

Well organized and efficient. Adapted to changing circumstances that were out of their control. Had to manage a wide variety of customers and did a good job of it.
It was a very well organized and rich tour and the guide Carine is amazing! I hope to have other tours with her. Thank you globus. This is my first tour with you and it was a great experience.

This is a three day tour at best. NOT a 5 day tour. The overall activities were pretty sparse and lack lustre. Suitable for people over 70. The tour leader seemed tired and couldn't be bothered. The accomodation in Tromso was not 4*. There was too much free time with not enough direction on how to spend it- I was not sure what I had paid for. The reindeer safari- seriously, feeding some reindeer, a 5 minute slowest ever ride in a sleigh, and an interesting 15 minute talk on the Sami, does not a safari make! and that took 3 hours, so a lot of hanging around, again with no direction, With other tours I have been with the guide would sit and talk with us, recommend places for dinner/lunch, suggest we all go together etc. There was absolutely none of that here. The walk around Sommarsoy, was an amble for an hour. Then no direction on how to spend the rest of the time. The campfire, was an evening in a hut, popping out to stand by a small fire occasionally. No directed talk/information etc. It was a Northern lights tour and we weren't even given a talk about the Northern Lights! An expensive waste of money on my account. Would never use this tour company again.
Mario was a wonderful group leader and very professional. He helped with all aspects of the trip and recommended options tours. We loved the sauna. Jumping into the fjord was freezing but so much fun. Would recommend this trip.

It was a great tour.Norway was amazing .We had many different tour guides but Jiva was very knowledgeable and he was our guide from Sweden onwards.Salvador is excellent driver .Quality of the hotels was good except for one at Bergen.Enjoyed the night ferry from Sweden to Finland with lively music and dance on Board. On the whole this tour was good and worth the price.

Collette

  • Good - 179 reviews for Norway tours
If I could give a "zero" I would. If everything goes smoothly, Collette might be a good experience, but uf there are any blips or snags, Collette finds something or somebody else to blame. In all my travels (especially with tours) I have never experienced anything like this debacle. Collette has done nothing to make things right. I had to make flight reservations through Collette, but when there was a problem, Collette says they can't do anything about the airlines. It has been 10 days and I still don't have luggage. Worst company I have dealt with - by far..
The tour manager Eira made the whole trip spectacular! She was amazing and so easy to get along with.

Zicasso’s travel agent worked with us from the beginning to plan our dream trip to Sweden and Swedish Lapland, filling every day with a lifetime of amazing experiences and memories. When an unanticipated glitch popped up, the travel team was quick to help problem-solve with kindness and expertise, resulting in an even better trip. We would recommend them to all our friends and family for a once-in-a-lifetime trip!

I recently had the pleasure of working with Zicasso’s travel agent to plan my dream vacation, and I cannot speak highly enough of the exceptional service I received. From the moment I contacted them to the conclusion of my trip, everything was handled with professionalism, expertise, and a genuine passion for travel. From the outset, they took the time to understand my preferences, interests, and budget constraints. They patiently listened to my ideas and provided invaluable insights and suggestions to enhance my itinerary. Their extensive knowledge of destinations and travel logistics ensured every aspect of my trip was meticulously planned and executed flawlessly. One of the things that stood out to me was their attention to detail. They went above and beyond to secure the best deals on accommodations, transportation, and activities without compromising on quality. Additionally, they were readily available to address any questions or concerns I had, providing timely assistance and reassurance throughout the planning process. During my trip, everything unfolded seamlessly, thanks to my agent’s meticulous planning. From the moment I arrived at my destination to the day of my departure, I felt well taken care of and supported. Their personalized recommendations for restaurants, attractions, and local experiences truly enriched my travel experience, allowing me to immerse myself fully in the culture and beauty of the destination. In summary, I cannot recommend Zicasso’s travel company highly enough. Their dedication to customer satisfaction, expertise in travel planning, and commitment to excellence set them apart in the industry. Thanks to their efforts, I enjoyed a stress-free and unforgettable vacation that exceeded all my expectations. If you're considering booking your next adventure, look no further than this company for an exceptional travel experience. Thank you once again for making my travel dreams a reality.

Zicasso’s travel agents were able to meet my budget needs and responded quickly to questions. The hotels they recommended were good to great and the experiences were just enough for us without overbooking our days. Their information on the train travel was lacking, however. In Brussels, it was not indicated which of the three stations we were to use, the transfer time on one trip was too short to make the connection when our train was only a bit late, and the train info for our last leg was totally inaccurate as to times and connection point. Luckily, other trains were available, so it didn’t cost us anything but a little stress and a $10 Uber.

Amazing! We had a fantastic, well-planned trip. Everything, such as transport and all the smaller details, was taken care of by Zicasso's tour company! Everything was perfectly scheduled. The activities weren't over-booked, so we had time to spend in each place and really take it all in. We had such a great, memorable time.

We took the most amazing trip to Norway to see the Northern Lights. I reached out to Zicasso, who put me in touch with our travel partner and their wonderful travel agent. She put together several options for the trip and we were able to choose the ones that best fit our family’s interests. Once everything was decided, she went to work doing everything. All the bookings, connections, transportation, etc. were handled and I didn't have to worry about any of it. Before the trip, she confirmed all of the details and included everything on an amazing travel app that we used while we were on the trip. I can't say enough about what an amazing experience we had on our trip and working with Zicasso and our tour operator. I have used both companies before and have never been disappointed.

Our Zicasso travel partner listened to our preferences and needs, and helped design a fabulous trip for our family. Transportation was flawless throughout the trip and the local guides were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to know them personally and learning about their hometowns. I especially valued the app that provided us with every detail for each day, including emergency contacts, hotel information, and itinerary. Thank you!

The tour was perfect and went smoothly the entire time. Communication from Nordic Visitor was timely and detailed. Would book with this tour company again.

Memories we'll cherish forever

We found Norway to be a fabulous country and enjoyed every minute of our trip. The scenery was fantastic, the places visited were brilliant and the people were incredibly friendly and helpful. The information pack provided by Nordic Visitor was invaluable, the route chosen for us was superb and the places we stayed in were great. Likewise, the excursions offered, especially the Rib Safari were fantastic and gave us memories we'll cherish forever. Lastly, but by no means least, Irja, our travel consultant, couldn't have been more helpful and I would like to extend a huge thank you to her for all that she did.

Unforgettable in so many ways

It was unforgettable in so many ways, highlights after highlights. We knew to expect a lot after our trip to Iceland a couple of years ago, also organised by Nordic Visitor. Our expectations were exceeded and more. We saw northern lights three times, the food everywhere was excellent, experienced dog sledding in the moonlight and sleeping in the SnowHotel, and we saw a white reindeer! How lucky we are to have experienced all that. We have now returned home, happy and full of awe.

A great experience

Very well-organised tour and a great experience. Nordic Visitor were very professional and their experience was evident in choosing the well-located and comfortable accommodation they selected for us. Best of all we got to see the northern lights!

Incredibly happy!

Our travel agent, Małgorzata, was amazing to work with! She was able to add a few extra days in Oslo and arranged transportation via train to Bergen. Overall, I thought booking this vacation online and making payments was seamless. All the hotels we stayed in were nice, clean and safe! We loved the breakfast buffets, they were top notch! Also, collecting our rental car and navigating in a foreign country was seamless. We are incredibly happy that our tour package that we received at our first hotel included a physical map that had our tour highlighted.

I'll be recommending Nordic Visitor to my friends

The trip was really amazing. We had an absolutely superb time in Tromsø; hotel and excursions were spot on. The guide and whole the staff was really professional. Professional photos taken by the guide were really fantastic. They gave us excellent care, more than what we have experienced on any trip. Our favourite experience was the snowmobile, but catamaran trip was great too. Certainly I will be recommending it to my friends. I was very pleased that those who delivered the services showed a lot of professionalism.

Very satisfied customer

This was my second experience using Nordic Visitor. I am a very satisfied customer. A few years ago we did a self-drive tour of Iceland that was just amazing. This time we did a train/cruise combo tour of Norway. Once again, I can only say you will have a fantastic experience and you will appreciate the labuor of organising and planning being handled by experts who know what they are doing. The cruises through the fjords were beautiful as were the train trips. We loved the combination of train and boat travel as each offered distinct beauty from a different perspective. The country is truly lovely and we look forward to booking future travel with Nordic Visitor!

Extraordinary!

Extraordinary! Everything went off as planned without a hitch. Our travel guide, Juliana, was exceptional, very responsive in answering our questions and providing updates.

Very satisfied with Nordic Visitor

We were very satisfied with the tour and overall experience with Nordic Visitor. The hotels were strategically chosen and the quality of hotels was satisfactory. The optional tours were also highly recommended. Timings of the schedules throughout the tour were ideal and not rushed.

Best vacation we ever had!

Our family of 5 (3 adult children) loved our Norway fjord tour. We saw the most beautiful scenery and loved each hotel. The food was delicious. Something for everyone. Our guide Al and driver Chris kept things running smoothly. We will have memories to last a lifetime. Thank you Nordic Visitor. Best vacation we ever had!

An excellent decision to book with Nordic Visitor

Following research, we decided to book with Nordic Visitor. This was an excellent decision. The booking process was easy and informative and Hanna was always available for guidance. The accommodation provided was top class and, importantly, convenient to the train stations from which we travelled. Our tour was amazing throughout with stunning scenery and sights.

The tour gives you a fabulous overview of Norway!

The tour gives you a fabulous overview of Norway. We did a lot of travel in between sights but this enabled us to have a real breadth of experience, from fjords to mountain passes, railway adventures and small boats. Our tour guide was excellent and the sights and experiences outlined for us were top-notch. The materials provided about our tour were excellent and well thought out.

Norwegian Cruise Line Launches Exclusive Trade Portal: Norwegian Central

Innovator in global cruise travel offers agents the chance to learn, promote, book and connect with new trade portal as part of a push to support agents into 2021 and beyond.

Norwegian Central Overview

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel with a 53-year history of breaking boundaries, has successfully launched “Norwegian Central”, a new and exclusive trade portal aimed at helping travel agents learn, market and sell NCL holidays more easily and seamlessly.

By logging in to Norwegian Central, partners gain direct single log-in access to NCL’s agent booking engine Seaweb, as well to a complete relaunch of NCL’s award-winning training platform NCL University (NCLU) . The all-new knowledge hub provides refreshed course content, new achievement levels and a reimagined reduced rate programme that allows agents to book reduced cruises for module course completion.

Also included in Norwegian Central is Marketing Headquarters , which gives agents the opportunity to create their own marketing materials for selling NCL from an extensive toolbox of flyers, banners, videos and more. In addition, travel partners can stay-up-to date on all NCL news via Norwegian Central, which features access to the cruise lines’ exclusive Partners First Facebook Page and provides for updates and registration to upcoming webinars, ship visits and events.

Eamonn Ferrin, Vice President and Managing Director, UK&I and MEA, Norwegian Cruise Line

In line with our Partners First Philosophy, it has been our utmost priority this year to provide our valued travel agent partners with the support they need, and we will continue to build on this going forward. We see a great demand for NCL cruises, especially for 2021, 2022 and 2023, and we are increasing our efforts to ensure we equip agents with the best tools possible to help them capitalise on this opportunity. We are excited to launch Norwegian Central, which brings all our key tools together in one convenient place and look forward to introducing further initiatives very soon.

norwegian travel agency

Commenting on the launch, Mark Godden, Product Manager at Cruise Circle, said: "Norwegian Central is a great tool - there's relevant content for everyone within our business, be it marketing, sales, customer care or product teams. I can't think of another cruise line tool that offers access to such a wide range of clearly marked, easy to find information, all with just one log-in. This, combined with the recent launch of NCL Air, is yet another reinforcement of NCL's readiness to innovate in all aspects of its business."

The all-new Norwegian Central is available on norwegiancentral.com. Agents can login with their Seaweb credentials or email [email protected] to register.

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path adventures, and get you out of any jam. Especially if you know who to use.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

A woman soaks in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Kayak, paddle, raft—a river trip down Costa Rica’s Pacuare is good fun. And Danielle Meyer of Coastline Travel likes to book clients in the riverfront, all-inclusive, 20-suite Pacuare Lodge. “The way to get to the property is by whitewater rafting, so you truly begin with adventure!”

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

A man sitting in an open-air vehicle while on safari in South Africa smiles at the camera while an elephant is just over his shoulder, approaching.

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Tierra Bomba, a 15-minute boat ride from the Colombian capital of Cartagena, is an affordable Caribbean destination with a relaxed pace and soft white sands.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Matt Lindsey of LuxeSurfTravel can arrange a surf safari on a 165-foot boat, complete with dive masters. surf guides, and a spa. Guests spend a week cruising around atolls in the Maldives seeking out perfect swell and swimming with whale sharks and manta rays.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

”Totoro Eco-Lodge, in Nicaragua, has always been one of our favorites,” says Dominic Allen of Real Latin America. In addition to its laid-back vibe, it’s spectacuarly placed on Ometepe Island, with views out to the active Conception volcano. Allen recommends volcano hikes, rainforest excursions, tours of a chocolate farm, and sunset paddles in search of caiman.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Following on from our post below, Antony Blinken has said the US will provide an additional $2bn (£1.5bn) in military funding to Ukraine.

Speaking from Kyiv, where the secretary of state is visiting, he said the additional fund will be able to provide more weapons and investment in Ukraine's industrial base.

"We are rushing ammunition, armoured vehicles, missiles and air defences to get them to the front lines," Mr Blinken said.

The secretary of state said the US is "intensely focused" on providing patriots and other forms of air defence systems, which Volodymyr Zelenskyy has persistently asked allies for.

He said support is coming from the US at a critical time for Ukraine - which is facing fierce levels of fighting in the north, as Moscow targets the region of Kharkiv.

When asked if he would support US weapons being used to strike places inside Russia, he said: "We don't encourage this, but Ukraine has to make the decision for itself."

US secretary of state Antony Blinken has today continued his visit to Kyiv.

He has been pictured visiting a drone production facility and witnessing packages of US aid being unloaded at a shipment facility in the city of Vyshneve.

Mr Blinken also accompanied Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba to a wreath laying ceremony at the wall of rememberance in the capital.

His visit coincides with the start of fierce battles in Ukrainian towns and villages, but Mr Blinken pledged unceasing US support for the country, during and beyond the war.

The Russian defence ministry claims its troops have taken control of three more settlements in Ukraine, the state-owned news agency RIA has reported.

The reports said two of the settlements - Hlyboke and Lukiantsi - are in the Kharkiv region and one - Robotyne - is in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Fierce fighting is currently ongoing in the Kharkiv region, particuarly in parts of Vovchansk and the border village of Buhruvatka.

The southeastern Zaporizhzhia region has also previously been targeted by Moscow due to its nuclear power plant.

Last month, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned that the power plant had been attacked three times since 7 April.

It said the attacks had led the world "dangerously close to a nuclear accident".

Sky News cannot independently verify these battlefield claims.

This morning we reported about a Ukrainian drone attack on an oil depot and power substation in Russia's Belgorod and Lipetsk regions.

Responding to the attacks, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said they were a demonstration of the "criminality" of Kyiv and the Western powers which back it.

She said all those responsible for the attacks would be punished.

The attack on the Oskolneftesnab oil depot near the city of Staryi Oskol and Yeletskaya power substation was conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), a Ukrainian intelligence source said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has postponed all foreign visits due to the situation in the Kharviv region, his press secretary has said.

Sergii Nykyforov said on Facebook that the Ukrainian leader instructed that "all international events scheduled for the coming days be postponed and new dates coordinated".

Earlier today Mr Zelenskyy cancelled trips to Spain and Portugal, but did not give a specific reason as to why.

Moscow began a pressing offensive on the Kharkiv region on Friday, after weeks of speculation that it was preparing to establish a new frontline there, and is forcing Ukraine to rush in reinforcements.

Ukraine is today planning to record high electricity imports after significant damage to its energy infrastructure from recent Russian strikes.

The energy ministry said imports were expected to rise to 23,692 megawatt hours (Mwh) up from of 21,072 Mwh on Tuesday and 19,484 Mwh on Monday.

The "emergency supplies" will come from Poland, Romania and Slovakia, as well as emergency assistance, the ministry said.

It warned that there could still be power shortages this evening.

Ukraine's national grid operator said the import volumes would be close to the maximum that the country is technically able to receive from the EU.

Russian missile and drone attacks have caused more than $1bn (£792m) of damage to Ukraine's energy sector and a loss of 8,000 Mwh of generating capacity, energy minister German Galushchenko previously said.

Many regions have been experiencing blackouts as a result.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken is in Kyiv meeting Ukrainian leaders.

Yesterday he also found time for an impromptu visit to a local nightclub where he took to the stage with an electric guitar to perform a version of Neil Young's 1989 hit Rockin' In The Free World.

Before he began playing, he told the crowd: "The US is with you, so much of the world is with you."

For rights reasons, unfortunately, we can't show you him singing, but we can report he made a solid effort.

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman has said Moscow will destroy all US military equipment supplied to Ukraine.

Maria Zakharova's comments come after US secretary of state Antony Blinken told Ukrainian leaders in Kyiv that despite a month-long delay more US weaponry was coming and some had already arrived.

The US-aid package sets aside $61bn (£48.1bn) for Ukraine, much of which will go toward replenishing badly depleted artillery and air defence systems.

Ms Zakharova also took aim at attempts from the West to use frozen Russian assets to benefit Ukraine.

She said to do so would be in violation of Russian law and risked undermining the international financial system.

If Russian assets in the US were seized, it could mean another $5bn (£3.9bn)  in assistance for Ukraine, coming from Russian Central Bank holdings.

However it is unlikely the US will seize the assets without agreement from other members of the G7 and the European Union.

The head of the Ukrainian police force in the Kharkiv region has described the situation in the town of Vovchansk as "extremely difficult".

Oleksiy Kharkivskiy, Vovchansk's patrol police chief, said on Facebook that Russian forces are establishing positions inside the town.

Yesterday Russia claimed it had taken parts of Vovchansk and the border village of Buhruvatka.

It is part of Moscow's pressing offensive on the Kharkiv region, which began on Friday after weeks of speculation that Russia was preparing to establish a new frontline there, and is forcing Ukraine to rush in reinforcements.

Russia has said it repelled a Ukrainian drone attack on the region of Tatarstan - around 497 miles east of Moscow.

The defence ministry said the attack occurred at around 7.30am local time.

It said Russian air defences had destoyed an aeroplane-style drone.
