India started their new year campaign on a high by defeating Sri Lanka in both T20I and 0DI series . The next challenge for the Men in Blue comes from the Black Caps.

India and New Zealand will face each other in three ODIs and as many T20Is starting from Wednesday (January 18). The Kiwis recently thrashed Babar Azam’s team in Pakistan in the 50-overs format.

The upcoming white-ball rubber becomes more important since India will host the ODI World cup in October this year. Therefore, both teams will try to rehearse, make a note and resolve their shortcomings before the global event takes place.

Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Indian side in ODIs, while Hardik Pandya will captain the hosts in the shortest format.

On the other hand, in the absence of Kane Williamson , wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham will be seen in the role of New Zealand skipper during the ODIs. Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner will lead the Blackcaps in T20Is.

India squad for New Zealand tour announced; Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, Shikhar Dhawan named captain for ODI series

India will tour New Zealand for three T20Is followed by as many ODIs. The series will begin on 18 November.

India squad for New Zealand tour announced; Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, Shikhar Dhawan named captain for ODI series

The BCCI on Monday announced the Indian squads for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. The tour comprises 3 T20Is, starting 18 November in Wellington, followed by as many ODIs. The series ends on November 30 with the final ODI at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

Hardik Pandya will lead the Indian squad in T20Is against New Zealand with Rishabh Pant being his deputy, while Shikhar Dhawan will lead Men in Blue in the ODIs against the Kiwis. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have been rested for the New Zealand T20I and ODI series.

Also, speedsters Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik have been included in both squads.

Squad for NZ ODIs: Shikhar Dhawan (C), Rishabh Pant (vc & wk), Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson (wk), W Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Shahbaz Ahmed, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Sen, Umran Malik. — BCCI (@BCCI) October 31, 2022

Notably, the last time when India toured New Zealand in 2020 they emerged victorious 5-0 in the T20I series but lost the ODI series 0-3. Virat Kohli was the captain of the Indian team during that tour. The two teams also played two-match Test series where the hosts convincingly beat India 2-0.

Meanwhile, India chief selector Chetan Sharma’s fate hangs in balance as the BCCI could soon rejig the senior panel after the T20 World Cup in Australia.

It is an open secret that Chetan and his panel’s performance and consistency in selection has been below par in recent times and unless India performs very well, it could be curtains for India’s first hat-trick man in 50 over World Cup.

Schedule of India’s tour of New Zealand 2022:

1st T20I - 18th November, Wellington

2nd T20I - 20th November, Mount Maunganui

3rd T20I - November 22nd, Napier

1st ODI - 25th November, Auckland

2nd ODI - 27th November, Hamilton

3rd ODI - 30th November, Christchurch

India T20I squad for the New Zealand tour: Hardik Pandya (C), Rishabh Pant (vc & wk), Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

India ODI squad for the New Zealand tour: Shikhar Dhawan (C), Rishabh Pant (vc & wk), Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Shahbaz Ahmed, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Sen, Umran Malik.

With KL Rahul at No. 6, India looking at bigger picture in Tests: Hanuma Vihari

Hanuma vihari believes kl rahul's spot at no. 6 is part of a larger strategy for india's tour of australia, citing rahul's strong performances in sena countries (south africa, england, new zealand, and australia). despite an underwhelming return to test cricket after seven months, the team management values his experience in challenging conditions..

  • Hanuma Vihari explains how KL Rahul at No.6 may prove fruitful in Australia tour
  • KL Rahul fails to impress on his Test comeback in the series-opener vs Bangladesh
  • Vihari pointed out that Rahul has performed well in SENA countries as a batter

Veteran India batter Hanuma Vihari believes KL Rahul’s position at No. 6 in the batting order is part of a bigger strategy for India’s upcoming tour to Australia. After nearly seven months away from the Test arena, Rahul’s much-anticipated return to red-ball cricket didn’t quite set the stage on fire. Rahul failed to impress with the bat, managing scores of 16 and an unbeaten 22 in Chennai against Bangladesh.

Vihar explained that Rahul’s experience is key, especially in handling challenging situations like facing the second new ball or stabilizing the team during a collapse. Vihari pointed out that Rahul has performed well in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), which is why the team management values his experience for this crucial middle-order role, even though his record in India may be less impressive.

India vs Bangladesh, 2nd Test: All you need to know

"I wouldn't say it would be his last Test match because they're looking at a bigger picture is what I feel playing KL Rahul at No.6. They have a plan in mind. They want experience at number six when we tour Australia, because in Australia, playing at six, you need to have good whether it's facing a second new ball or a collapse early. You need someone with experience to go out there and counter it and KL Rahul has done it in the past in SENA countries, especially, I know his numbers in SENA countries are really good compared to Indian conditions, which is surprising with the quality KL Rahul possess. But that is what they are looking at," Hanuma Vihari, Expert, JioCinema & Sports18, told Indiatoday.in in an interaction.

Vihari noted how Rahul may not always be the flashy, aggressive batter, but when he settles into his groove, he becomes the player who can anchor an innings, especially under pressure. That’s the version of Rahul that India hopes will emerge when they face sterner tests, particularly on their tour to Australia.

Since his Test debut in 2014, Rahul’s career has been a story of flashes of brilliance tempered by long periods of inconsistency. In 51 Tests, he has scored 2,901 runs at an average of 34.12. Those are solid numbers, but for a player of Rahul's calibre and reputation, there is a sense that his career statistics do not reflect his true potential.

'RAHUL WILL CEMENT HIS PLACE'

"I feel as a team management and selectors, someone at number six to guide the team if they're in trouble, or play the second new ball and take it forward from there. Obviously, he needs to score runs to back the team's decision as well. He started well, in the second in the last game. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough time to make it a big score or substantial score, but I'm sure in Kanpur, where the wicket is nice when the opportunity comes, he'll make it big and cement his place at number six, which is important for Team India when they tour Down Under," Vihari added.

Rahul’s return wasn’t just marked by his performance in Chennai; there were prior signs of rust and recovery in his Duleep Trophy appearance for India A. In his first outing, his 111-ball-37 was criticized for its conservative approach. In a world where aggressive batsmanship is prized, Rahul’s hesitation to take the initiative in key moments drew flak. However, in the second innings of the same match, he found some redemption, crafting a gritty 57 off 121 balls as his side crumbled around him. Though India A ultimately lost to India B, Rahul's ability to hold his ground in difficult situations hinted at his resilience.
